Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

Deep hard rock underground mines tend to experience high stress as such drives exhibit dynamic responses attributed to a rock burst variant (strainburst). This dynamic behaviour is difficult to predict, and every effort is made to devise the appropriate dynamic support system for its associated failure restraint. This paper outlines the back analysis and the support scheme design for an underground decline that exhibited damage from a dynamic strainburst occurrence. It employs a decline section that experienced a dynamically loaded strainburst that initiated rock fragment ejections. The procedure involves a preliminary structural analysis, a seismic intensity measure, and a rock mass simulation to determine the static stress concentration and ground support system response. The numerical simulation is conducted in FLAC3D which employs the advanced strain-softening IMASS constitutive model governed by two Hoek–Brown (HB) bounding yield surfaces. To account for the post-peak brittleness response associated with strainburst the plastic strain multiplier () is adjusted to 0.0 < < 1.0. The back-analysis shows that the occurrence was initiated by a low-intensity seismic wave that superimposed an extra stress component to the initial static stress which triggered rock fragment ejections. Additionally, the appropriate support scheme comprised of Weldmesh, Fibrecrete, static (split set) and yieldable (Kinloc) reinforcements is recommended and implemented. Thereafter, the bolt’s efficiency is evaluated based on the axial force and elongation capacities and then compared with the published bolt performance data. The evaluation results show that the maximum bolt axial force (0.1 per cent) and elongation (0.006 per cent) are below the designed capacity and rupture strain.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110&#176;. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

In evaluating the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) system for any mine, a number of options are available for each of the dig side, transport and dump side operations. Some of them are moreappropriate than others; given the pit arrangement, the material being handled and the rates at which it needs to be moved. This paper seeks to document the options that might be employed, and to rank them in terms of their applicability at any mine and their practicality overall, with a view to nominating those that would be most suitable for further study.

The decision making check-list and hierarchy of information for process and plant design is generally wide-ranging and complex. The nature of grades, mineralisation and ore types in an ore body, its mine development sequence, and the body of results from metallurgical and physical test work present complex and competing influences on flowsheet development, values for design, equipment selection, plant efficiencies and operating strategy. The challenge is how to manage all these variables, to understand their impacts on performance, and how best to provide a cost-effective plant design and robust process that meets daily/weekly/monthly operating objectives. Throughput, production and grade or product specifications need to be met. The ore body is not average; its range of metallurgical and physical characteristics may be moderately to highly variable. This paper assesses some of the key competing influences and conflicting issues in design and equipment selection, and their effect on production and performance expectations.

EnergyAustralia’s Sydney Central Business District (CBD) cable tunnel network will form a loop 6.2 km in length. The 3.2 km long, 3.5 m, diameter city east cable tunnel (CECT) currently in design, will complete the loop in 2014. This paper discusses the ventilation design of the CECT, considering operation for four functions:1. normal (unmanned),2. access (manned),3. purge, and4. emergency fire modes.The dominant design criterion which determines the required ventilation capacity for CECT is the specification of an upper air temperature limits of 35°C (dry bulb) and 24°C (wet bulb) for manned access, during all ambient weather conditions and cable heating loads. Simplistic static heat transfer analyses do not yield a sufficiently accurate calculation of tunnel air temperature and humidity to provide a safe and yet economical design. The primary refinement in the analysis discussed in this paper is associated with modelling of the system’s dynamic behaviour.Our means of analysis is through a thermo-fluid-dynamic simulation of the interactions between the diurnally and seasonally varying loads (cable heat generation, ambient air conditions and groundwater inflow), tunnel airflow and the resulting tunnel air temperature and humidity. These simulations are validated using experimental data from the existing city south and city west cable tunnels.Fire life safety scenarios are also analysed and discussed in association with the ventilation design. Ventilation strategies are developed for dealing with such emergency fire situations.The understanding and insight provided by the work offers the ability to optimise ventilation plant provisions in future cable tunnels, particularly long and high energy density tunnels.

The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90 per cent of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive. So, it is important to consider the seismic stability and reliability of all structures including tailings dams.In this study, the tailings dam stability of the Sangan Iron Ore Mine in Khorasan Razavi, Iran is considered for the case study. The tailings storage facilities of the mine have three cells with the capacity of 45 million cubic metres. The first cell, which has three stages of dam raising, has been recently brought into operation. This cell has a downstream-raised retaining embankment. As the risk of seismicity in this area is high, seismic response of this dam was evaluated by numerical methods. To do this, appropriate models were developed for materials used in foundation and body of the embankment. Then for seismic stability analysis, Tabas (Iran – 1978) and Chi-Chi (Taiwan – 1999) earthquake acceleration simulations were applied.The results of this study indicated that the upstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam and dam crest did not experience significant horizontal displacements during earthquake period, but the downstream portion of Stage 3 of the dam showed a maximum horizontal displacement of 60 cm at the third stage of dam raising. This is three times more than what was estimated by the designer. Also, the maximum vertical displacement resulting from simulation of the Tabas earthquake was 35 cm. The results of dam response to Tabas and Chi-Chi earthquakes indicate that displacement, shear stress and pore pressure by the Tabas earthquake were higher than the case of Chi-Chi earthquake. The higher energy of Tabas earthquake and the higher frequency near to the natural frequency of Tabas earthquake could be the reasons of this difference. The results of this case study confirm that if the studied tailings dam impacted by an earthquake of a similar magnitude to Tabas, the dam will be seismically stable and the developed strains will not be significant.CITATION:Delavar, A, Rashidi Nejad, F and Ganjian, N, 2015. "This paper presents the second part of a study of the assessment of rock stress inputs on the performance of various new mining designs at the Ok Tedi large open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. Over the years, four programs of rock stress measurement have been completed at Ok Tedi, each providing different interpretations of the in situ field stresses. Details of three of these programs and interpretations are provided in the precursor to this paper, entitled ‘Rock Stresses at Ok Tedi, Papua New Guinea’ (Lee et al, 2014).This paper explains how the various stress interpretations were utilised in the modelling of the proposed new open pit and underground mining excavations, comparing where possible their expected effects on stability. The modelled performance of three specific mine components have been discussed here as case studies, including: the below-pit drainage tunnel, as the floor of the open pit workings is mined down from 350?m above, to within just 75?m above the crown of the tunnel the stability of the 1000?m high slope of the proposed West Wall cutback the proposed sublevel open stoping extraction sequence in the Gold Coast orebody beneath the East Wall, for which only the likely ‘worst-case’ stress regime was used to assess sequencing and stability issues.The benefits of scheduling the collection of detailed rock stress measurements and other input data from a range of different sources at various stages of the projects are discussed.Alternative in situ stress models have less stability impact on open pit slopes than on underground mine excavations.CITATION:de Bruyn, I A, Baczynski, N R P, Lee, M F, Mills, K W, Mylvaganam, J, and Prado, D A, 2014. "The mining industry is constantly seeking methods for optimising the exploitation of mineral resources, such as iron ore, in a sustainable and eco-efficient manner for economic and social benefit. When faced with resources that have mineralogical or textural complexity, poorer grades or geological variability, it is particularly important to apply a comprehensive geometallurgical approach to the development of the mining operation, from resource definition through to processed product. Integral to this approach is the quantitative characterisation of representative samples across the whole orebody.A key factor that associates the geological characteristics of iron ores to their processing response is ore texture. While the classification of samples on the basis of chemical or physical properties alone is often not sufficient to predict their processing behaviour, classification and quantification of texture types can be effectively correlated to metallurgical performance in processes such as blending, beneficiation, pellet making, sintering and ironmaking. Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. Diversity, equity and inclusion are often cited as ‘important priorities’ by mining companies and industry organisations in their public presentations and reports, but is the minerals industry really making strides forward? The mining industry is the least gender diverse industry in Australia (WEGA, 2023). Women make up just 22 per cent of the mining workforce and mining has a gender pay gap of 15.1 per cent (WEGA, 2024a). Only 8 per cent of the CEO roles are female and 20 per cent of boards have no female members (WEGA, 2023, 2024a). Gender diversity, equity and inclusion is a highly topical issue with the recent release of the Respect@Work report, Western Australia Parliamentary Inquiry as well as the publication of company specific workplace culture reports and the national legislative changes to implement a positive duty for organisations to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This comes at a time of a skills and labour shortage in the minerals industry as well as declining geoscience study and participation. This is a perfect storm for our future workforce. Governments, industry associations, networks and companies are developing and supporting initiatives to make strides towards equity and inclusion, with some shining examples on both an industry and company level, but the dial is only moving slowly and, in some ways, going backwards. Every company is unique, but every company can review and support gender diversity, equity and inclusion. Actions to progress gender parity could include establishing a clear company position; ensuring that this position is cascaded throughout the company with appropriate training; reporting and reviewing gender participation as well as supporting positive workforce initiatives and a positive culture with a people-centric issues reporting process. At the industry level, there are clear gaps in the support for gender diversity and inclusion including a national voice and ‘one-stop-shop’ to support women in the industry and provide resources. Recommendations include improved co-ordination and collaboration of support for women as well as improved promotion of the suitability (and safety) of the industry for women. The new independent organisation, Women in Mining and Resources Australia (WIMARA) has the objective to address the challenges of gender diversity and inclusion as well as foster co-ordination, co-operation and collaboration between the different stakeholders and state or territory groups and amplify reach. To deliver the future workforce that the minerals industry needs, the time is now for the industry to make some giant leaps for womankind.

The JORC Code contains a mandatory classification system for Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates for public reporting. The classification is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process, or is derived from an estimated level of confidence in the outcome. However, the statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource or reserve which must take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation.In addition to the traditional deterministic interpretation and estimations adopted by geologists, semi-quantitative techniques are now available to improve the estimation of confidence while continuing to involve the Competent PersonÆs experience in the process. Methods for quantifying confidence in mineral resource estimates for advanced projects and operating mines have also been&#160;developed.Classification is undertaken primarily as a communication tool between the estimators and the other stakeholders in the process. A brief examination of the stakeholdersÆ requirements is included.

An important issue currently facing the mining industry in Australia is the management and cost to the industry and other stakeholders of entry into and exit from towns and their communities. These costs can be environmental, social, economic, political or reputational. The ability of companies to engage the trust of stakeholders, including: communities, governments and investors, is critical, and corporate reputation plays a significant role in this. For the industry to secure a long-term and sustainable future, it must have the technical, business and reputation assets to proceed in a cost-effective, environmentally acceptable and socially supportive way. This research assesses reputation as a critical competitive issue for mining companies, as technology and information make mining more predictable; the physical and human assets of mining companies are less likely to be the critical resource in a Resource Based View model of competitive advantage. The proposition is that in mining today, reputation as it facilitates day-to-day operations, regulatory zeal and access to new mine sites will become the rare, inimitable and valuable resource for mining companies. This paper reports on an ongoing research program to evaluate the impact a mining companyÆs reputation(s), with its various stakeholder groups, has on a companyÆs ability to sustain competitive advantage. Integral to this study is to develop an understanding of the relationships between mining companies and their stakeholders, and the importance of corporate citizenship polices to reputation and hence to corporate sustainability. Through the identification of the drivers of reputation for the various stakeholder groups, a model of reputation formation will be developed and also reputation measures for the mining industry in Australia. The preliminary findings of this research, the results of an industry focus group conducted with representatives from regional mining operations, are reported. The industry focus group was designed to enable a better understanding of who are the main stakeholder groups and how they regard mining companies and to inform the second stage of the research project a Delphi Study of the drivers of reputation by stakeholder groups. The aim of this research is to further the understanding of the relationship between corporate citizenship, reputation and performance in the mining industry, thus assisting companies to strategically manage their corporate citizenship investments.

One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

In many cases mine design is the most important driver of the profitability of a mining project, however to reach an æoptimumÆ mine plan many compromises have to be made. Some of the fundamental profit (and loss) drivers relate to stoping methods and stope design parameters. Inevitably trade-offs have to be made between the stability of underground openings, ground support costs and production efficiency. This paper looks at the role of geomechanics in the mine planning and design process. The concepts of æcontrollable lossesÆ and æuncontrollable lossesÆ are developed as a means of partitioning ground control costs. A stope design example is given which provides a method of examining mining costs, and includes a decision making element in order to quantify geotechnical impacts and select stope dimensions. The method also provides a general framework as a means of balancing ground control costs against maximising returns from an underground mining project.

Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. A numerical modelling back-analysis exercise was carried out at a WA gold mine at which early signs of seismicity (rock noise, scatts from active faces) were becoming apparent as depth of mining increased towards the 500 m mark. Some strain bursting had occurred and it was necessary to discover what the implications of this were for greater depth. The aim of the modelling was to: 1. Establish a correlation between observed ground conditions and model predicted damage, in overstressed areas of the mine. 2. Use this correlation to forecast rock mass damage and ground control requirements for proposed future stoping panels at greater depth. Good correlation has been achieved between observed rock mass damage, and a 3D Finite-Element RS3 model, run in elastic mode. Two candidate stress field orientations were modelled. The model parameter best fitting the observations was the Strength Factor (SF), the ratio of strength/stress. The good match (correlation coefficient of 0.7) between observed and modelled suggests that the elastic approach is justified for the depth range and rock mass properties analysed. The correlation also enabled a link between observed damage and installed ground support performance. Using the linear best-fit between observed and modelled, a forecasting exercise was carried out using the same RS3 model, modified to include future stoping. The resulting damage and ground support categories were obtained from the modelled SF for each proposed stoping level. Also, a series of generic geometries was assessed to investigate the impact of varying stope face lead/lag distance, sill pillar height and stope pillar size, on ground conditions. The key finding of the generic geometries were: • Ground support schemes have been defined for the expected conditions. • All ore drives are expected to have significant damage in the backs and rehabilitation. • Lead/lag distance not to exceed 10 m. • Sill pillar/level intervals of less than 20 m require an increase in ground support scheme. • Pillar sizes for maintaining footwall and hanging wall stability should be at least 10 m × 5 m.
