The Hugoniot curves were determined for Fe-Si alloys containing up to 7 wt pct (13 at. pct) Si. The pressure of the transition increased as the silicon content of the alloy increased. Single crystals of 2.9 wt pct Si-Fe were also studied. The pressure of the transition was not dependent on crystallo-graphic orientation. All of the Neumann bands (mechanical twins) were attributable to (112) planes but not all of the {112} planes showed twin markings. A thorough study of the iron Hugoniot (the relationship between specific volume and pressure) under plane wave shock loading revealed a pressure transition at about 130 kbar shock pressure. The results of this investigation were reported by Bancroft, Peterson, and inshall1 in 1956. At the time of this discovery, it was felt that this was probably the a, to y transition normally found in iron and many of its alloys. Subsequently a number of iron alloy systems were surveyed in which the alloying element has a considerable effect on the normal a, to y transformation. The influence of carbon and nickel and/or chromium have already been reported.2,3 At the present time, there appears to be some doubt that this pressure transition is the usual a, to y transition In this study, Fe-Si alloys containing up to 7 wt pct (13 at. pct) Si were chosen for several reasons. To the present, the transition has been found only in iron-base alloys which were originally in the a, phase (bcc). Secondly, the y loop at atmospheric pressure extends to only about 2.5 wt pct Si. If the transition were a, to y, then one might expect a rather drastic pressure effect for alloys containing more than 2.5 wt pct Si. Finally, single crystals of Fe-Si alloys large enough for shock loading studies are readily available thereby making it quite easy to determine the effect of crystal orientation on the transition pressure and on the twinning behavior of the alloy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fe-Si alloys containing up to 7 wt pct Si were produced by normal vacuum casting procedures. Single crystals of Fe-2.9 wt pct Si were purchased from Monocrystals Co., Cleveland, Ohio. The orientations of these crystals were determined and samples cut so that the shock wave would be parallel (to within 1.5 deg) to either the (loo), (Ill), or (112) principal orientations. Three distinct experimental testing techniques were used. First, the pin technique, described elsewhere,4 was used to determine the transition pressure for the polycrystalline alloys as well as for the (111) and (112) orientations of the 2.9 wt pct Si single crystals. Secondly, the recovery studies, described in detail in an earlier paper,2 were used for determining the effect of alloy composition and crystal orientation on the plastic II compression-plastic I rarefaction interaction zone for several specific shock pressures. Finally, measurements of pressures above the two-wave threshold were made on the polycrystalline alloys so that more complete Hugoniot curves could be constructed for this alloy system. The optical techniques described by Rice et al.5 were used to measure the shock and free surface velocities of the samples from which the Hugoniot data were obtained. This method is applicable only in the single wave region, since velocities are obtained from the measured total transit times of the disturbances through measured sample thicknesses.

Either (100) (001] or (110) (0011 oriented secondaries, or both, depending on annealing atmosphere and material composition, grew in a matrix of 2-dimensional grains. The growth dependence of secondaries of(hkl) orientation in the iron and 0.6 pct Si-Fe is explained in terms of surface energy driving forces and the dependence of these driving forces on both (hkl) orientation and amount of oxygen at the surace. (100) [001] grains grow when suflicient oxygen is present at the gas-metal interface to make y100 the lowest (hkl) surface energy. When little or no oxygen is present at the gas -metal interface, making Y110 the lowest surface energy, (110) (001 1 grains grow. When Y100 and y110 are approximately equal but lowest among (hkl) surface energies, both (100) (0011 and (110) (0011 grains grow simultaneously. An excess of surface oxygen produces complete grain growth inhibition in high-purity iron; i.e., a 3-dimensional grain structure is retained over long annealing periods. However, a small amount of silicon in the iron reduces the growth inhibiting tendency of oxygen without altering the (hkl) surface energy relationships. Some information on annealing twins is presented. SECONDARY recrystallization in high-purity a iron, cold rolled to strip a few mils thick, was reported recently.' The present paper provides additional information on this subject, also furnishes similar information on both zone-refined iron and a high-purity 0.6 pct Si-Fe alloy, and treats the more important surface phenomena that determine to a large extent whether one or more secondary recrystallization textures will appear during annealing. Previous studies on high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe2,3 have shown the importance of (hkl) and impurity-atom dependent gas-metal surface energies on the formation of secondary recrystallization textures in high-purity material. For example, either (100) or (110) oriented grains may have the lowest surface energy depending on the amount of oxygen at the gas-metal interface, and hence the highest driving force for growth if other growth factors are the same. Another important phenomenon in high-purity material is stabilization of the matrix structure; neither impurities nor a strong matrix texture seem to be necessary when recrystallization and normal grain growth occur, developing a stable two-dimensional type grain structure. The average grain size in such a structure is usually between one and two times the specimen thickness. Consequently, most of the grains have grain boundaries terminating at exposed surfaces, and this results in gas-metal interfaces (or hkl surfaces) as well as

Rare-earth additions were made to laboratory heats of Type 310 stainless to observe their effect on as-cast ingot structure, nitrogen and sulfur contents, and nonmetallic inclusions. Lanthanum had a grain-refining effect in 30-lb ingots, but results with 200-lb ingots were inconsistent. Cerium, lanthanum, and misch metal lowered the sulfur content when the sulfur exceeded 0.015 pct and the rare-earth addition was greater than 0.1 pct. The rare-eardh content in the metal dropped very rapidly within the first few minutes after the addition. The size, shape, and distribution of nonmetallic inclusions was not changed in 30-lb ingots, but changes were noticed in larger ingots. RARE-earth* additions have been made to austenitic Cr-Ni and Cr-Mn steels to improve their hot workability. The high alloy content of these steels often results in a considerable resistance to deformation and inherent hot shortness at rolling temperatures, particularly in larger ingots. Rare earths in the metallic, oxide, or halide form are usually added to the steel in the ladle after deoxidation although they can be added in the furnace prior to tap or in the molds during teeming. The literature- indicates that the effects of rare-earth treatments on these stainless steels are not consistent, and sometimes even contradictory. Since no mechanism has been presented which satisfactorily accounts for the claimed improvements, the effects of rare earths are a qualitative matter. The work described in this paper was initiated to expand the knowledge of the effects of rare-earth additions on melting variables such as ingot structure, chemical analysis, and nonmetallic inclusions. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Ingot Structure—Rare-earth additions to stainless steels have been reported to cause a change in primary ingot structure in that there are fewer coarse columnar grains. However, the results are inconsistent. While one investigation1 has shown a large reduction in coarse columnar crystals, another2 has been unable to observe this effect, particularly when small ingots were poured. Post and coworkers3 observed ingot structures for a number of years and found that the columnar type of structure is not definitely a cause of any particular trouble in rolling or hammering, provided the alloy is ductile. Knapp and Bolkcom4 found rare-earth additions to be quite effective in preventing grain coarsening in Type 310 stainless steel. Chemical Analysis—Many effects of rare-earth treatment on chemical analysis have been claimed in the literature. Russell5 observed that some sulfur is removed by rare-earth metals, and that a high initial sulfur content improved the efficiency of sulfur removal. Lillieqvist and Mickelson6 report that rare-earth treatment causes sulfur removal in basic open-hearth furnaces, but not in basic lined induction furnaces. Knapp and Bolkcom found no sulfur removal in acid open-hearth and acid electric furnaces, probably because the acid slag can not retain sul-fides. snellmann7 showed that sulfur could be lowered apprecfably with rare-earth additions; however, a sulfur reversion occurred with time. Langenberg and chipman8 studied the reaction CeS(s) = Ce(in Fe) + S(in Fe), and found the solubilit product [%Ce] [%S] equal to (1.5 + 0.5) X 10-3'at 1600°C. Results in 17 Cr-9 Ni stainless were about the same as those in iron. Beaver2 treated chromium-nickel steels with 0.3 pct misch metal and observed some reduction in the oxygen content. He also noted an inconsistent but beneficial effect of rare earths when tramp elements were present in amounts sufficient to cause difficulty in hot working. It is not known whether rare earths reduce the content of the tramp elements or change the form in which these elements appear in the final structure. No quantitative data are available concerning a possible effect of rare-earth treatment on hydrogen and nitrogen contents. However, Schwartzbart and sheehan9 stated that additions of rare earths had no effect on impact properties when the nitrogen content was low (0.006 pct), but served to counteract the adverse effects of high nitrogen content (0.030 pct) on these properties. Knapp and Bolkcom4 analyzed open-hearth heats in the treated and untreated conditions and found the nitrogen content (0.006 pct) to be unaffected. These two results lead to the speculation that rare-earth additions can reduce the nitrogen content to a certain level. The Southeast Missouri lead district, located about 70 miles south of St. Louis, embraces four important sub-districts and several minor ones. The important sub-districts, in order of discovery, are Mine La Motte, the Old Lead Belt, Indian Creek, and the Viburnum Lead Belt. Descriptions that follow are of geology and ore deposits of the Old Lead Belt. The ore deposits are stratiform in character and are localized in a narrow carbonate bar and algal reef environment on the flanks of exposed Precambrian of the St. Francois Mountains. Ore structures include a variety of primary depositional features such as pinchout zones, disconformities, ridge structures, reefs, and submarine gravity slides. Faulting, prior to and during ore deposition, "prepared" the host rock and strongly fractured areas are mineralized much more intensively and extensively than unfractured parts of the same sedimentary structures. The deposits are epigenetic in character. Mineralization is believed to have occurred at the time that post-lower Ordovician faulting took place. The mineralizing solutions are believed to be concentrated brines from adjacent basins that moved out of the basins during faulting, uplift, and erosion of the St. Francois positive area.

ANNUAL meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers convened on Tuesday morn-ing, Feb. 20, the president, Mrs. H. W. Hardinge, presiding. President Hardinge, in opening the meet-ing, said: "I have the honor and great pleasure to welcome you to our seventh annual meeting. It has been a happy year, though I started in fear and trembling. My fear is partly gone and my trembling becomes less as time goes on. Never has a chairman had such splendid cooperation and harmony in her work; no. matter how much was asked nor what the task, I have always received the same answer, `We are with you, of course we can do it.' Often the road has been untried and the way full of snares, but we have all pulled together. Is it any wonder we have had a prosperous year? I cannot thank the governing -board and officers enough for their help." Mrs. Hardinge described her trip through the West last summer, during which she visited many of the local sections of the Auxiliary. She also spoke of the work of the Rossiter Raymond memorial library which has been started as an activity of the Woman's Auxiliary. Mrs. Reynders read the minutes of the last annual meeting, and Mrs. Kemp read the treasurer's report. The latter showed that on Feb. 1, 1922, there was a bank balance of $683.61 and on Feb. 10, 1923, the bal-ance was $947.93. Mrs. Westervelt expressed the sorrow of the Auxiliary for the death -of Mrs. Florence Howe Hall and of Mrs. Levi P. Holbrook.

The Friedensville zinc mine of The New Jersey Zinc Company is located about four miles south of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Saucon Valley, an infolded and down faulted block of Cambro-Ordovician carbonate sediments surrounded by hills of pre-Cambrian gneiss and Cambrian quartzite except where breached by Saucon Creek at its entrance into the Lehigh River. The Beekmantown formation of lower Ordovician age is the host for zinc and limonite ores, the former occurring in the lower dolomitic portion thereof and the latter in the upper interbedded dolomite and limestone portion of the section. The Beekmantown is overlain unconformably by the Jacksonburg of middle Ordovician age and according to Miller (2) underlain conformably by about 2500 feet of Cambrian dolomites and 200 feet of the basal Cambrian Hardyston quartzite. Igneous rocks, younger than the Cambro-Ordovician carbonate rocks, are absent in the vicinity of the ore deposits. The major structure is a N60°E-trending saddle-shaped doubly plunging anticline overturned to the north. A syncline lies to the north of the anticline. A thrust fault of substantial displacement repeats the south limb of the anticline. The ore consists of sphalerite and pyrite, along with gangue dolomite and quartz, filling and replacing the sedimentary type matrix of a strata-bound solution collapse breccia in the dolomitic portion of the lower Beekmantown. This breccia was produced in pre-Jacksonburg time as a consequence of uplift, erosion, and development of a karst topography and subsurface drainage system in the Beekmantown. Deposits of both zinc and limonite are present on the vertical north limb, on the crest and on the gently dipping (25°) south limb of the Friedensville anticline; consequently, there is no preferred structural setting for mineralization. Rather this distribution supports the view that the folding is post-ore. Features confirming this view are the development of flow cleavage in the breccia matrix, the deformation of some of the sphalerite, and the fracturing of the pyrite mineralization therein. There is nothing to indicate that the age of mineralization is other than Ordovician and older than Taconic deformation. In the absence of intrusive igneous activity younger than the ore host, the writer suggests that submarine volcanic exhalations associated with the volcanic activity recorded in the eastern eugeosynclinal facies of the Ordovician may be the source of the metal ions.

OUR present-day geological surveys show that 36 of our States are underlain with bituminous coal, covering a total area of 496,709 square miles. The North American continent possesses 69 per cent of the world's coal reserves, with the United States alone having an estimated 55 per cent. The American coal reserves, in tons, are calculated to he about 3,500,000,000,000 tons, of which we have exhausted about 1 to 1 1/2 per cent. If this coal were mined at the rate of the 1918 production-a record output of 579;000,000 tons-it would not be depleted for 4,000 years. The more easily accessible and high-grade coals would obviously be consumed much before this; some estimates are 100 years. The natural progress of the nation's industries up to 1910 encouraged on every hand the development of new mines, especially where cheap and easy access to coal measures was coupled with short hauls to the consumer. Over-development resulted, which is perhaps today one of the fundamental causes for the many difficulties faced by the coal industry, which is highly competitive; about 70 per cent of the production cost is labor. IN September 1937, the Ohio Copper Co. inaugurated the treatment of its copper-bearing mill tailings at Lark, Utah. These tailings had been accumulated during the regular operation of the Ohio Copper mine and mill over the period 1007 to 1019. Gravity concentration had been employed except for a comparatively short period in 1919, when flotation was used. The ore milled during that period assayed about I per cent Cu. The chief copper mineral, chalcocite, was dissemi-nated in a shattered quartzite, mainly along fracture or cleavage planes. The quartzite gangue was extremely hard and grinding to liberation resulted in excessive sliming of the "sooty" chalcocite, with consequent high tailings losses. Recovery on the seven million tons treated was prob-ably less than 6o per cent of the total copper content. As early as 1918, attempts had been made to sample the dump. In 1928, a com-plete sampling program was undertaken. The sampling consisted of seventy-four 5-in. post auger holes drilled to the full depth of the dump at regular intervals of 250 ft. Each 10-ft. portion thereof com-prised a sample for analysis. Each sample was screened, rolled, divided into three parts, dried and assayed. The reject was retained for testing purposes. From the depth of the auger holes a contour map of the dump was plotted, Fig. 1, which gives percentages of tonnage and copper content.

IN the present century the coal and manufactured gas industries have been eclipsed in public interest by oil, natural gas, and hydro- electric energy, which have had the benefit of rapid development and novelty. I sometimes wish that our social- order were such that hydro power had been developed first, that the use of gas from coal had never been seriously considered, and that our domestic energy requirements were supplied by other fuels. Sup- pose the manufacture of gas from coal should then come on the scene at the present time with the current plight of the railroads, coal regions, and labor generally, presenting the fact that it could increase the amount of coal mined and shipped by the railroads by some 16,000,000 tons, and increase the coal used at existing u plants five times. Imagine the great public interest that would be manifested; it would supply the cooking and water-heating requirements of a community with a superior character of service at a cost to the customer approximately half that which had obtained previously. Would not such a situation be heralded as the salvation of our country and all help be given it?

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. The water-supply for the town of Kimberley is brought from the Vaal river, 16 miles distant, and pumped into town by a private water company. The charge made for water, which is

A phase diagram is proposed for the Y-C system based on the vesults of thermal analyses, microscopic obsevvations, and X-ray diffraction studies. Three intermediate phases occur in the system: a congru-ently melting fcc phase with a wide range of homogeneity about the composition Y2C, an intermediate solid-solution region between 55 and 58 at. pct C, and a bct dicarbide melting congruently at 2415°C. All three compounds undergo a phase transformation at elezlated temperatures. A continuous serzes of solzd solutions exists between the fcc phase and the high-temperature form of YC2 with a maximum in the solidus at 2000°C and 30 at. pct C and a minimum at 1805°C and 54 at. pct C. THIS investigation of the Y-C system was undertaken as part of a nuclear materials development program. Yttrium-base alloys are of interest as possible containers for liquid metals, and carbides are currently receiving increased attention as high-temperature materials for advanced reactors and other applications. Previous work on this system was limited in scope, and the results were somewhat inconclusive and at times contradictory. Spedding et al.&apos; reported the existence of a triyttrium carbide having an fcc structure with a wide range of homogeneity and Dean et a1.2 reported the existence of a rhombohedra1 phase having the stoichiometry of Y2C. Bachella et a1.3 observed that the latter was the result of ordering of carbon atoms in the fcc solid solution. The ordering range was placed at 800" to 1000°C. Vickery et a1.4 reported a high-melting compound which they identified as yttrium dicarbide, and Spedding and coworkers1 determined the structure of this phase as bct with lattice parameters a = 3.66 and c = 6.17A. Samsonov et al.5 reported the melting point of YC2 as 2300" * 50°C. Recently Bowman et a1.6 found a transformation in the dicarbide from the tetragonal to an fcc form at 1320 20°C. Samsonov and coworkers7 reported a monocarbide of yttrium melting at 1950" * 20°C and also a sesqui-carbide melting at 1800" * 50°C. The existence of the latter has also been indicated by others,1&apos;8 but neither compound has been definitely established. The Y-C phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Chubb and Keller8 in 1964 based on the data available at that time. The tentative nature of this diagram together with the uncertain status of the compounds indicated that additional work on this system was needed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Yttrium metal of 99.9 pct purity was prepared for use in this study by the reduction of YCl, with calcium to form a sponge product.9 The major impurities in this material were as follows: 100 ppm C, 150 pprn H, 20 ppm N, 300 to 1000 ppm O, <20 ppm Ca, <100 ppm Cr, <80 ppm Cu, 150 ppm Fe, <30 pprn Mg, <400 ppm Ta, and <100 ppm Ti. Alloys were prepared by arc melting yttrium sponge together with pieces of high-purity graphite rod in a purified argon atmosphere. Homogeneity was insured by repeated melting, inverting the ingot between melts.

ESTIMATED United States crude-oil production during 1943 established a new annual peak of 1,500,000,000 barrels, a daily average of 4,118,000 barrels. This would be an increase of 315,000 barrels per day, or 8 per cent over 1942 and 7 per cent over 1941, the previous peak. During the first ten months of the year, production jumped from 3,782,000 barrels per day in January to 4,400,000 in October. Available data for the last two months of the year indicate a leveling off of this trend, with daily rates slightly above 4,400,000 barrels.

Probably the newest thing in mining safety, or safety for mines, is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industries, as represented by both management and labor, and the general public of the Nation, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments and papers in the technical press;l-9 in labor periodicals,10,11 in popular journals and periodicals,l2, 13 and in the daily press; also by discussions of the Safety Committees sponsored by the National Safety Council,9, 14-15 the American Mining Congress,l.l6 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers,2,4 the Mine Inspectors&apos; Institute of Amerthe Coal Mining Institute of America,5 19 the American Standards Association, and others.20.21 Mining safety is a joint problem of management and the individual workman. Safety is not attained and will not be attained solely by laws, decrees, and commands because, if it could be done in this manner, acceptable mining safety would have been achieved long ago by the individual states in our Nation and by the nations abroad. The best safety performance is found at plants where management provides a safe environment for the workers; where supervision is efficient and super- visors, others concerned with promoting safety, and the individual worker know through training, experience, and personal contact the safe and unsafe practices of their field; and where the trained individual worker has become safety-minded by experience, quiet influence, unconscious suggestion, and personal guidance. Despite what may be said to the contrary, progress has been and is being made in mining safety. This is shown in Fig 1 to 4. It is beyond the scope of this paper to give possible reasons for the valleys and peaks in the fatal-injury rates. Some recent factors that appear to be contributing to the improvement in these rates are briefly discussed. Aside from mining equipment, "what&apos;s new in mining safety" for some mines has been in effect or was tried by others long ago. A safety pro- gram is a living thing; as such, it must be vitalized and continuously fed with enthusiasm, constructive action, and improvements. Because safety is concerned with human conduct, it is necessary to practice safety at all times; if not, it is soon forgotten, and accidents occur. Mining-safety Records The large employment and production concerned with anthracite contribute much to the mining-safety records of the mineral industry. Approximately 81,000 persons are. employed in this industry having mines concentrated in an area of 480 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania. Because of the achievement of the anthracite industry in safety during 1948, the other branches of the mineral industry can profit by a study of what has been done to achieve that record. Where one mineral is produced by other large groups having methods of mining that are similar in many respects to the anthracite-mining methods, an achievement in such a large industry is important. Salient factors concerned with safetye in the anthracite industry are: no radical change has occurred in the mining-safety regulations pertaining to anthracite mines.
