The Project alignment initiates north of Pinerolo, along the State Road 23[S.S. 23] that is one of the principal arteries to the northwestern Alps where a number of Olympic events for the 2006 Winter Games will be held. The 3.5 km ring road bypasses the Porte habitat by traversing twice the Chisone River. It consists of the following principal structures [Figure 1]: San Martino bridge [130 m in four bays] Prarostino viaduct [130 m in four bays] Craviale tunnel [1055 m] Turinella bridge [a 50 m long bridge that connects the two tunnels] Turina tunnel [665 m] Malanaggio viaduct [350 m in 9 bays]. The road section is 13 m wide and is made up of two 3.75 m lanes, a hard shoulder [1.50 m wide] and a 1.25 m wide curb for each lane. The Project maximum velocity is 100 km/h.

Throughout the mining industry today, new bearing materials - ZA* high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys - are reducing costs of maintaining and rebuilding a wide range of equipment. As replacements for bronze bearings, installed in original equipment at the plant or during maintenance and repair operations in the field, the zinc alloys frequently provide better or equal performance at lower cost. The ZA Alloys The ZA alloys are a family of three high-performance zinc-aluminum alloys that compete in cost and performance with cast iron aluminum and bronze. The growing number and uses testifies to the versatility of these alloys and is encouraging their consideration in a wider range of applications. The ZA alloys are referred to as ZA-8, ZA-12, and ZA-27, the numbers corresponding approximately to the percentage of aluminum each alloy contains. ZA-8 is a permanent-mold casting alloy and is usually selected for decorative purposes; ZA-12 provides both performance and cosmetic benefits; ZA-27 offers the greatest functional strength. The term high performance ZA alloys distinguishes them and their improved engineering properties from traditional zinc die casting alloys. Maintenance Savings At its mine in Timmins, Ontario, Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. operates over 40 Joy VCR- 150 crawler-mounted air-powered rock drills. Most of the drill components undergo severe stress as the drill batters through the under-ground rock. As the components wear, the drill bits wobble; when the wobble becomes excessive, the drills are rebuilt. In the gear train, which rotates the drill steel, there are three planetary gears with - historically - bronze bushings. Since the planetary gear bushings are wear items, they are routinely replaced during overhaul. The bronze planetary gear bushings (three bushings per assembly) were replaced up to five times annually. With 43 drills in use, bushing consumption approached 600 per year. At the manufacturer's replacement part cost, the 600 bushings and gears would cost more than $20,000 a year. Even though a major saving was achieved by having the bronze bushings manufactured locally, the 600-unit annual usage provided ample incentive to investigate other ways of lengthening drill life and reducing the part costs. One approach was to consider using a bushing material that offered good bearing properties, but was lower in cost. About three years ago, ZA-12 zinc-aluminum casting alloy, costing less than half as much as bronze, was evaluated and selected for testing. One hundred ZA bushings were manufactured and placed in service as the drills came in for rebuilding. At the next rebuild the "drill doctor" (drill maintenance mechanic) noticed that, although the bronze bushings were completely destroyed, on occasion the zinc alloy bushings were not. In addition, he noted that some of the ZA bushings showed less wear than the bronze bushings. Because the bushings were changed routinely during each overhaul, the actual operating life of each bushing was not determinable. Therefore, it was not possible to statistically compare the life of the ZA bushing against the bronze. However, the desired life of the part was from overhaul to overhaul. So the ZA alloy obviously met the objective, giving equal or better life than bronze at a significantly lower price. Based on the favorable results of the testing under actual operating conditions, Kidd Creek maintenance personnel decided to switch permanently to the ZA bushings for rebuilding the VCR-150 rock drills. Original Equipment Application As one of the leading companies marketing the ZA alloys, as well as a zinc -copper-silver mining company, Kidd Creek is interested in developing applications for the alloys by original equipment manufacturers such as joy Manufacturing. Kidd Creek marketing representatives provided joy with information on the Timmins mine tests, along with ZA-12 bushings for evaluation and testing. Based on this information, joy installed ZA bushings in 12 new VCR-150 units and delivered them to customers for use in such areas as granite quarries and copper, lead, zinc, and limestone mines. During the following year, joy engineers closely monitored repair reports to verify the performance of the ZA part. The engineers' findings convinced them of the advantages of ZA-12. As a result, joy now uses ZA-12 bushings in the manufacture of its VCR-150 air tools. Advantages for Casters and Users In the foundry, the new alloys have proved their castability and profit potential in sand and metal permanent-mold processes, as well as the new graphite permanent-mold gravity casting process. The energysaving, pollution-free and ease-of-machining benefits they offer are important to all of these processes. Extraction of Al(III) from aqueous sulfuric acid solutions into organic Cyanex 272®-carbon tetrachloride systems was investigated from a multi-component mixture containing aluminum, cobalt and nickel. Al(III) extraction efficiency was quantitative with 1.0 M Cyanex 272® in two stages at an aqueous: organic (A:O) phase ratio of 1:1 and an equilibrium pH of 3.2. The stripping of Al(III) from the loaded organic (LO) with different acids indicated sulfuric acid to be the best stripping agent. More than 99% stripping of Al(III) from the LO was achieved using 2 M H2SO4 at an A:O phase ratio of 1:1 in a single stage. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of Al(III) was determined by the slope analysis method. The extraction reaction proceeded via the cation exchange mechanism and the extracted species was assumed to be AlA3?3HA, where HA refers to the dimeric and A the anionic form of the extractant, Cyanex 272®. The extraction of Al(III) was studied in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Part III reviewed the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona. Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and a P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC with 1,380 kPa (200 psig) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling some of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step, and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an acid-autogenous process for pressure leaching. This paper (Part IV) discusses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application for the Morenci operation in Arizona.

The Hong Gai coal field in northeast Vietnam has been the main coal mining area of Vietnam for more than 150 years. Anthracite coal is produced from several open pit and underground mines situated close to the UNESCO world natural heritage site Ha Long Bay. The mining-induced environmental impacts such as dust emissions, acid mine drainage, and visual impairments due to waste dumps resulted in severe conflicts of interests regarding future land use and the protection of the world natural heritage site Ha Long Bay. Within the RAME project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam), Brenk Systemplanung is contributing to an improved environmental and sustainable planning in Vietnam's mining industry and the reduction of environmental impacts on Ha Long Bay by developing suitable and sustainable technology and planning measures (e.g. for dump construction/rehabilitation, predictive modelling, and/or monitoring) for Vietnam's leading coal producer.

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

An assessment of U.S. western hardrock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hardrock mining machines. Of the operators, 96% had daily noise doses that exceeded the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214% and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jackleg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners.

This paper reviews groundwater issues leading to a secondary grouting program at the Chattahoochee Tunnel that was implemented subsequent to the contact grouting program. The secondary grouting program was developed based on infiltration data, geology, and testing programs. This paper includes a brief description of the geological features encountered, as well as describing the grouting program. The success of this grouting operation has been quantified by several methods, and is presented to help others project the costs and benefits of this type of program. Review of initial results and refinements of techniques are also discussed.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

Ball Clay -- Four companies - H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Imerys Group (formerly Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. - mined ball clay in four states during 2010. Production, based on preliminary data, was 910 kt (1.11 million st) with an estimated value of $42.9 million. That was a 10-percent increase in tonnage from 831 kt (916 million st) with a value of $37.7 million that was produced in 2009. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of domestic production. It was followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 70 percent of production was airfloat, 20 percent was crude and 10 percent was water-slurried.

Introduction The mining industry has long been associated with a high incidence of low back disorders and pain (Klein et al. 1984, Leigh and Sheetz 1989, Brinckmann et al. 1998). It is believed that the higher incidence of these injuries among miners is the result of high exposures to postural demands, heavy manual work, and exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV). Recent work has indicated that miners involved with heavy lifting (especially in restricted spaces or on uneven ground) or who have been exposed to whole-body vibration in undamped seats experience noticeable changes in their spines that are consistent with degeneration of the intervetebral discs of the spine (Brinckmann et al. 1998). As will be described shortly, there is mounting evidence that disc degeneration plays a large role in the development of low back pain, particularly chronic back pain. Until fairly recently, medical doctors generally assumed that back pain was the result of muscle strain, ligament pain, or so-called “trigger points” (Bogduk, 1997). However, research supporting these mechanisms of pain has been very scant. When subjected to scientific scrutiny, none of these mechanisms has been shown to relate to back pain in a convincing manner. On the other hand, there are three mechanisms that have been shown to be highly associated with back pain in controlled scientific studies: sacroiliac pain (present in 13% of back pain sufferers) (Maigne et al. 1996), facet joint pain (present in 15 % of back pain sufferers) (Schwarzer et al 1994), and disc disruption and degeneration (present in 39% of chronic back pain sufferers) (Moneta et al. 1994). The latter mechanism, which bears the highest relationship to back pain that has been objectively demonstrated, will be the focus of this section. Scientists now believe they have a good idea how back pain may develop in cases involving disc disruption and degeneration (Bogduk 1997). As the spine experiences loading during lifting tasks or whole body vibration, the first structure to fail is called the vertebral endplate, which is a structure that attaches the disc of the spine to the vertebral body (Figure 1). The endplate typically experiences a fracture, which the body will attempt to heal by means of scar tissue. Unfortunately, this scar tissue impedes the flow of nutrition to the disc itself (discs are dependent on nutrition from the vertebral bones), and if the supply is reduced sufficiently, the disc will start to degenerate. As this degeneration process proceeds, fissures or tears in the fibers of the disc start to develop. If any of these tears is a grade 3 fissure (Figure 2), an inflammatory response occurs in the disc, which will lead to the well-known sensation of low back pain (Peng 2006).

The Nutley Quarry Trunk Sewer Project is a good example of a tunnel that went through difficult and complex ground. The 2 m (7ft.) diameter and 840 m (2,750 ft.)long tunnel passed through soft ground, mixed face, and hard sandstone. The soft ground and mixed face tunneling provided several challenges. During excavation of the tunnel, the Contractor encountered a number of unanticipated large boulders. In addition, the length of the mixed face portion of the tunnel increased by 100%. The Contractor tried various construction techniques to overcome the difficult ground conditions and complete the project. The tunneling progress was slower than expected. The Contractor claimed extra costs for differing site conditions. Through discussions and negotiations between the Contractor, Engineer, and Owner, all of the changed condition claims were settled before the construction of the project was completed. This paper addresses the difficult ground conditions, claims evaluation, and how they were resolved by cooperative efforts between the Contractor and the Owner/Engineer.

"This article addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of coal exploration results, coal resources and coal reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or saleable tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal — therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (ROM) and saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information.Competent or qualified persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provided. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their public reports, which is as comprehensive as possible (CRIRSCO, 2013).” However, too often this isn’t the case, and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed.According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document, “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the saleable coal reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” An example as to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are detailed in the followint paragraphs. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a calorific value (CV) range of 19 to 20 MJ/ kg, an ash content between 29 and 34 percent and volatiles between 20 to 21 percent. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities, such as a CV range of 22 to 23 MJ/kg, an ash content between 20 and 28 percent and volatiles between 22 to 23 percent. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it is not just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station (Chetty, 2010).” Sulfur content is another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1 percent sulfur."

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

A recent analysis of 145 TBM tunnels of more than 1000km total length has helped to quantify the time dependence of utilization (U). In fact U = Tm, where T is time in hours and m is a negative gradient of deceleration. In poor quality ground, gradient m has a strong dependence on rock mass quality Q, for example m ˜ -0.5when Q = 0.1. Good investigation is critical for ensuring faster TBM tunneling then drill-and-blasting, which tends not to slow down (in m/hr) as the tunnel length increases. Anew design model called QTBM allows more reliable prognoses be made, and occasionally will disqualify the TBM solution.

Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43 m Main Beam TBM and back-up system was completed on September 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province of China. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, utilizing a method called Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA). The Jinping-II hydroelectric project features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18 km long, two of which will be excavated by TBMs and two by drill and blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2 m TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. This paper addresses the following topics: ¦Project description including geology and terrain; ¦The decision process leading to onsite first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned; ¦Design features of the TBM and back-up system; and ¦Operational history from startup to the writing of the paper.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.
