Three filter cloth fabrics commonly used in drains for coal waste embankments were tested by the Bureau of Mines for clogging behavior and deterioration under simulated field conditions. The objective was to provide guidelines for the mining industry for the proper selection and use of filter cloths to assure safer embankments at mine waste disposal sites. The filter cloths were tested with three coal waste samples in stand-pipes used to simulate coal mine waste disposal environments. Two of the cloths showed a tendency to become clogged with fines from the wastes. One waste caused clogging by precipitating an iron-silicon compound on the test cloths. No apparent cloth deterioration resulted from exposures to the simulated coal waste environments. (The exposures ranged from 2 to 12 months.) In other tests, exposures to waters in the pH range of 2 to 12 and to reagents used in coal-preparation plants resulted in insignificant or no deterioration, as measured by tensile strength. However, long exposures to sunlight (ranging from 4.6 to 6 months) caused major deterioration in two of the cloths (86-and 98-pct losses in tensile strength) and slight deterioration in the third cloth (9-pct loss in strength).

[Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone' is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. The brittle nature of limestone makes it impossible to quarry the stone and crush, it to size suitable for the shaft kilns without producing an excess of undesirable fines. Elimination of fines by changes in quarrying or crushing practices cannot lee expected. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. The tendency is to blast the roan with large charges of explosives and crush it with mechanical crushers, which produces more fines than the older methods of careful blasting with small char yes and sledging the rock by hand.. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. The trend toward encouragement of worker participation in accident prevention in the coal mines of the United States is not new; however, it has been given added impetus in recent years and is now definitely progressing. It has been found by experience that, although there are many approaches to a mine-safety program that will include the workers themselves as well as their supervisors, no one way is suitable under all circumstances. It requires the concerted efforts of many agencies working along parallel lines toward a common goal. The following seven principal agencies, using somewhat different methods, are listed to illustrate how this problem is approached throughout the coal-mining industry 1. Federal Bureau of Mines. 2. State mining departments (in individual States where coal is produced). 3. Programs conducted by individual mine operators. 4. Programs conducted by mine workers' organizations (unions). 5. Institutes, societies, and other educational organizations. 6. Coal operators' associations (regional and national). 7. Universities, college, and high schools. Each of the seven approaches to safety are discussed briefly, and their methods end contributions, such as publications and other activities, are listed.

Bureau of Mines exploration at the property of the Tulare County Tungsten Mines was by core drilling from the surface from May 16, 1950, to July 13, 1950. The property is in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range, 18 miles northeast of Lindsay, Calif. It has been in almost continuous production since 1942 and has produced 40,831 units of tungsten trioxide (W03) with a grade of approximately 67 percent. The work performed comprised a study of the geology, mapping the area, sampling the outcrops, and diamond drilling the area adjacent to the mine workings. Ten holes were drilled for a total of 1,824 feet. Ore reserves were found to be confined to tactite zones in a surface area approximately 250 by 400 feet and extending downward about 350 feet.

New turbine blades designed to resist ash erosion were tested by the Bureau of Mines in a pilot-scale coal-fired gas turbine. After a total of 1,963 hours, the rotor blades were only slightly eroded; and they had an estimated useful life of 20,000 to 30,000 hours. Changes in aerodynamic design of the blades successfully concentrated the ash at the outer casing, but stepped sidewalls for the rotor drum and wear strips at the bases of the rotor blades are still needed to minimize wear at these points. Stepped sidewalls and wear strips did not adequately protect the stator blades. Ash slightly eroded their leading edges, above the inserts, and cut notches into their trailing edges near the bases. Stator blade life was estimated at 5,000 to 7,500 hours. Blade erosion in these tests was less severe than with previous designs, but more efficient combustors and ash separators are required to reduce the amount and size of ash entering the turbine, to achieve acceptable blade life for commercial operation.

"Lee, Yu-Chen, and D. Eugene Rannels. Alveolar macrophages modulate the epithelial cell response to coal dust in vitro. Am. J. Physicl. 270 (Lung Cell. Mol. Physiol. 14): L123-L132, 1996.-The response of the alveolar epithelium to coal dust exposure is poorly understood. Coal or other dusts may act on the epithelium directly or indirectly through nearby alveolar macrophages (AM) that produce cytokines and other soluble products. AM and type II pneumocytes (T2P) were thus exposed to dust in coculture to evaluate their possible interactions. Anthracite coal dust PSOC 867 increased synthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) components by T2P. AM alone did not produce ECM. Similarly, coculture ofT2P with AM (3.75:1) had little effect on epithelial ECM synthesis. In contrast, coculture ofT2P with AM significantly increased PSOC 867 effects on T2P rates of ECM synthesis, ECM fibronectin content, and T2P levels of fibronectin mRNA. AM-conditioned medium did not change the PSOC 867 effect on T2P. Neither control nor PSOC 867-treated AM on Falcon culture inserts (0.45-µm pore size) over T2P stimulated ECM synthesis by either untreated or dust-exposed epithelium. Thus AM-mediated changes in ECM synthesis by PSOC 867-treated T2P require close cell-cell interactions, suggesting a role for cell-cell contact or for short-lived soluble mediators of the AM effects. DEVELOPMENT OF PNEUMOCONIOSIS, a chronic disease of coal workers that results in pulmonary fibrosis and low lung compliance, is associated with inhalation of mineral or coal dust in the work place (14). Although the pathology of pneumoconiosis has been studied extensively, cellular mechanisms that cause changes in lung structure and function are not fully understood. Particulate matter that enters the respiratory system distributes according to size, with larger particles being removed in proximal airways. Dust components of small size may enter distal alveolar region, which is populated by two types of epithelial cells, type I and - type II cells, and by alveolar macrophages (16). Each of these cell types may interact with inhaled particles, but only the effects of coal dust on alveolar macrophages have been studied extensively. Less is known regarding the response of the alveolar epithelium, or of effects on epithelial cell-alveolar macrophage interactions, in the dust-exposed lung.Function of the alveolar epithelium is well known to be influenced by the underlying basement membrane, or extracellular matrix (28). Alveolar epithelial cell extracellular matrix interactions, which may involve modulation of cell migration, attachment, or differentiation (17), are reflected in type II cell morphology, metabolism, secretory activity, hormone responsiveness, lamellar body content, and gene expression (21). The extent to which basement membrane modulates differentiation of the overlying epithelium is determined by both molecular composition and three-dimensional structure of the matrix. Type II epithelial cells in vitro synthesize, secrete, assemble, and degrade a variety of basement membrane components, including laminin, fibronectin, type IV collagen, and thrombospondin (22, 27). How expression of these components is regulated, directly or indirectly, upon exposure of the alveolar epithelium to injury by coal dust or by other particulates remains to be resolved."

As part of its mine subsidence research program, the Bureau of Mines and the American Electric Power Co. cooperated on a study, conducted at the Price River Coal Co. No. 3 Mine, directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. Subsidence was monitored at the No. 3 Mine over two adjacent longwall panels. The subsidence study area was reduced when the two planned panels were reduced in length because of equipment failure and a mine fire. Subsidence was measured for 21 months. Subsidence continued for 6 months after mining had been completed. A maximum of 2.2 ft of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at an overburden depth ranging from 300 to 1,500 ft.

Data are presented on the characteristics of lignites with emphasis on the composition and fusion properties of the ash. Differences in the analyses of commercial-grade lignites are related primarily to variations in moisture and ash contents. Lignite ash is generally characterized by high concentra¬tions of alkaline earth oxides and a greater tendency for retention of sulfur in the ash than higher-rank coals. Composition of ash varies significantly within and between mines. The differences within mines are significant for short distances and may be eliminated under certain circumstances by normal mixing occurring during mining. The sulfur in lignite averages 0.6 percent and is found primarily in the organic or pyritic forms with only a trace of the sulfate. During the stan¬dard laboratory asking procedures, from 60 to 100 percent of the original sul¬fur is retained in the lignite ash. Trace elements, such as uranium and germanium, in the ash from commercial¬-grade lignites are present in low concentrations, but others, primarily copper and silver, are present in specific samples in concentrations approaching those found in some commercial ores.

"INTRODUCTION The San Antonio Canyon prospect was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943 and again in October 1944. In July 1944, the United States Geological Survey mapped the prospect and submitted a report 4/ recommending core drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The drilling project, which was supervised by the author, was started on January 10 and completed on May 10, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The molecular species occurring at the mineral-reagent interface of the galena-aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate system was studied by developing a technique for using an attenuated reflection method in conjunction with standard infrared spectroscopy procedures. Lead ethyl xanthate was detected from the infrared spectra of all galena surfaces treated in the pH range of 7 to 11. At pH 8.5, lead ethyl xanthate formed as a film chemically bonded to the galena surface. A solvent extraction sampling method was employed with infrared spectroscopy to obtain quantitative data on the lead ethyl xanthate removed from the galena surface. The data showed that between pH 7 and 11 thy quantity of lead ethyl xanthate physically adsorbed decreased as the pH was decreased; in the same pH range, the quantity of free lad ethyl xanthate in the aqueous medium remained constant, and the amount of unreacted xanthate varied.

The Bureau of Mines inventoried Federal lands in the State of Oregon and classified them in detail, section by section, according to their availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by legal status and agency management practices. The Bureau determined areas of the State having past mineral production and/or known metallic mineral resources and areas favorable for coal, oil, gas, and geothermal resources, and prepared maps that spatially compare the availability of Federal mineral land with these mineral areas to demonstrate the extent of restrictions to mineral entry. Oregon contains 62.1 million acres, of which 33.9 million acres or 55% is Federal mineral land. About 2.3 million acres of Federal land is favorable for selected metallic mineral deposits, of which 64% is available, 13% is restricted, and 23% is unavailable. Of the 21.1 million acres of Federal leasable land favorable for oil and gas, 68% is available, 11 % is restricted, and 21 % is unavailable. Of the 146,720 acres favorable for coal, approximately 71% is available, 13% is restricted, and 16% is unavailable. Federal leasable land favorable for geothermal resources amounts to 458,968 acres, of which 42% is available, 34% is restricted, and 24% is unavailable.

One of the primary objectives of the Bureau of Mines solid waste utilization program is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste called raw refuse scrap. In this investigation, several types of scrap of differing quality, including refuse and turnings, were melted in a 1-ton electric-arc furnace in various combinations to produce steel in noncritical (construction) grades. In-formation on furnace operation and on the behavior of tramp and alloying elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to produce acceptable steel from a variety of steel scrap. Although some scrap is routinely used in steelmaking, it was found that up to 50 to 55 pct of the scrap charge can be ref-use, provided it is combined with higher quality scrap. The chemistry of the steels was generally acceptable, and all of them were rolled without difficulty. The specification (ASTM 615) for the steels produced was grade 40 or grade 60, containing 0.30 or 0.40 pct C, with mini-mum yield strengths of 40,000 or 60,000-psi, respectively. Most of the steels met the specification requirements. In-formation on typical microstructures of some of the steels is included. The composition of some furnace dusts showed high levels of Sn, Pb, and Zn.

This paper describing the methods employed in the purchasing and supply departments of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on office practice in mining operations. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Miami Copper Co.'s plant is located about 1 mile from the town of Miami, in the Globe-Miami Mining District, Gila County, Ariz. The property consists of a complete mining plant, concentrator, high-pressure steam power plant, and many other attendant structures. In normal times the company employs about 1,500 men, and mines and mills about 6,000,000 tons of ore annually.

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

Previous Bureau of Mines research has shown that tungsten ores containing as little as 40 pct W032-can be processed by a high-temperature molten-salt extraction technique to produce a tungstate-bearing sodium chloride phase with 99 pct W recovery and little impurity contamination. The objective of this work was to demonstrate that the tungstate-bearing sodium chloride phase can be a suitable feed material for preparing am-monium paratungstate (APT) by a modification to the present industrial solvent extraction process. A combined crossflow-count·ercurrent flow solvent extraction technique to extract tungsten is presented. APT produced by this new technique contained 88.6 pct W032-and the following impurities, in percent: Mn02_ 0.0007, Mo02 0.017, P205 <0.010, and Si02 0.012. Implementation of this processing technique would improve tungsten recovery from concentrates and simplify processing operations.

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

This paper, describing mining and milling methods and costs at the Gold Hill mine, is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines. Boise Basin, in which the geld Hill mine is located, is in the central part of Boise County, Idaho, about 30 miles by air line northeast of Boise. The mine, owned and operated by Talache Mines, Inc., is at the southern end of the town of Quartzburg. About 115 to 125 tons daily is mind by square-setting and is treated in an amalgamation plant.

The Bureau of Mines studied thermodynamic properties of liquid Al-Si alloys with the high-temperature galvanic cell Al(1)//Al+3(AlC13 in NaCl?KCl)//Al-Si alloy(1). Activities of aluminum and silicon (referred to pure liquid metals) show a pronounced negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law in liquid Al-Si alloys containing 0.9 to 35.2 atomic-percent silicon. Activity coefficients and the properties [?Gi, ?GxS ,?H, ?G, ?Gxs , and ?S] have been derived from the experimental data and are summarized in tables and illustrations.
