The initial results from the magnetic sludge factorial experiment are summarized in Table 2. For ease in interpretation, the four separate variables are identified with the high and low level of each variable being represented by + and - signs, respectively. Several important relationships are evident from an inspection of the data in Table 2. For example, magnetic sludges were obtained only during the high temperature tests. Secondly, with the exception of the last three tests, there is an apparent correlation between settled sludge volume (or sludge settling rate) and pH. Data on residual dissolved Fee+ indicate that precipitation of iron is not complete at pH 8 and room temperature (Tests l, 3, 5, and 7). Although this should not have any confounding effect on the interpretation of the results, it is an important observation and an aspect of the overall conceptual process that should be considered carefully during any future developmental work. The data in Table 2 were employed more fully in the calculation of main effects and variable interactions for each of the three responses. For this purpose, a codified design and calculation matrix, shown in Table 3, was used. The derivation of this matrix is described by Davies.(9) The positive or negative signs for variable interactions are obtained simply by algebraic multiplication of the signs for each single variable involved in the interaction. Main effects and interactions are calculated by multiplying the response values (Table 2) by the corresponding effect elements (Table 3), summing the results, and dividing by 8. The resulting value for single variables is also sometimes designated as an average effect, since (for tyro levels of the variable only) it is simply the difference between the average response of all trials carried out at the first level of the variable (factor) and that of all trials at the second level. If the effect of one variable changes at different levels of another variable, the two variables are said to interact. The relative importance of the variable or variables in question is reflected by the absolute magnitude of the calculated main effect or interaction. First-order (two variable) interactions are usually easy to interpret in terms of the physical behavior of the system. Second- and higher-order interactions are often less readily understood, and are often of minor significance in any case. To make a thorough survey of a coal mine in order to eliminate hazards, the competent safety engineer must be familiar with mere than one branch of engineering. It is essential that he know the properties of mine gases and the methods of detecting them, as well as hew to prevent dangerous as accumulations. It is also essential that he understand the action of overlying strata when the coal is removed, and the proper methods of protection by timbering or other suitable means of support. He must know the value of protective clothing in reducing injuries and mast be informed as to the correct handling and use of explosives to avoid premature blasts, misfires, and ether failures in blasting practice. He must understand hew to operate locomotives and cutting, loading, and various other types of machines to be able to recommend effective safeguards for protecting the men who use them in addition to being informed as 'to these and many ether activities connected with the mining of coal, he must net overlook electrical engineering if he wishes to combat the fire, shook, and ignition hazards attendant upon the use of electrical machinery and circuits in and around the mine intelligently. There are many points relating to safely in the selection, maintenance, and use of electrical circuits and equipment that are perfectly obvious to the electrical engineer but perhaps are not se evident to those not trained in this particular branch of engineering. Engineers of the U.S. Bureau of Mines who have made a special laboratory study of electricity as related to safety in minus haw e also made inspections of electrical installations at a large number of bituminous mines. These inspections have revealed practices and conditions that not only do not contribute to safety but that add nothing to efficiency and economy in the operation of the mine.

"1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come :from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sevanee has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although some coal has been produced from them.2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on l,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed ·were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal are estimated in beds 28 inches and more 'thick. This recovery is based on total thickness of coal in the bed (less partings 3/8-inch thick or more), rather than on the thickness of the coal actually mined. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian Region. The combined weighted average recovery for the Sewanee and Battle Creek beds in Marion County, as determined by this investigation, is 60.9 percent. Based on this, the recoverable reserves of coal in Marion County are estimated at 34 million tons."

The facts are generally accepted that an atmosphere containing large quantities of any dust is objectionable to breathe and that some dusts are more dangerous than others. Therefore, knowledge of the com-position of dusts is important in evaluating the hazard entailed on exposure. At present, free silica, of which quartz is the most abundant form, is considered one of the most significant dusts, from the standpoint of pneumoconiosis, and one State5/ has established permissible limits of air dustiness on the basis of the free-silica content of rock. The amount 06 free silica in materials used for rock dusting also has been limited.6/ Determination of free silica or quartz, therefore, is important.

The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

During early development of the blast furnace, Connellsville coke made entirely from Pittsburgh-bed coal proved to be an excellent fuel. The need for blending coking coals arose as the industry grew and it became necessary to carbonize coals having voking properties inferior to those of Pittsburgh coal Most coals carbonized today in continental Europe and this country are blonded: This practise has improved the quality of coke and permitted the utilization of coals that would yield inferior coke, if carbonized sepa- rately, The depletion of the world's better coking coals, which has been noted by leading coal technologists,2/4/wes accelerated during the recent war and. It is important, therefore, that reserves be evaluated and conserved. In the principal, steel-producing sections of this country, Pocahontas coals have been blended so extensively that the terms "low-volatile coking coal": and. "Pocahontas" have become virtually synonymous. Other low-volatile coals. have been used to manufacture metallurgical coke and will be used more extensively as, the supply of the better known and more accessible Pocahontas coals decreases. Recognizing the need for augmenting the supply of high-rank coking coals, the Bureau of Mines has included both low- and medium-volatile coals in its Survey of the Carbonizing Properties of American Coals, which was started with the cooperation of the American Gas Association in 1929. Twenty coals, 12 of low-volatile and 8 of medium-volatile rank, have been blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh-bed coal, and five standard low- volatile coals have been blended with various high-volatile coals. In 1947, a Korfmann universal shearing machine was installed in a mine in the Southern field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The machine was obtained from Germany by the Bureau of Mines after the close of World War II as a part of a program of experimental work to increase the output and lower the cost of anthracite, which the Bureau of Mines initiated in 1944 when an agreement was made with an anthracite-producing company for use of one of the company's mines as a testing ground for certain mechanical equipment procured or developed by the Bureau. A major objective is to develop a mechanical mining method that will increase the rate of advance and reduce the coat of development of coal gangways in steeply pitching seams. In addition to the time to be saved in driving these openings by machine, it is felt that further economies will be affected by making it possible to concentrate producing sections into smaller compass and that savings will ensue in supervision, maintenance, and time required for mining a section. A higher percentage extraction also is an objective. Test work covered by this report was concentrated on the power characteristics, maneuverability, effectiveness, and general qualities of the Korfmann machine in cutting coal, the cutting tests representing the first use of a machine of this kind in steep-pitch mining in the United States.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) constructed the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) to investigate the hydraulic parameters relating to the transport of coarse coal. To achieve these goals in a timely and efficient manner, the Bureau contracted to Boeing Services International (BSI) the responsibility of operating the HTRF and providing technical support. This data report is a summary of the testing and data results for the period 22 November to 10 December 1982. The testing covered herein is for coarse 2-in by 0 (minus 50 mm) Pittsburgh Seam coal in a 6-in (150 mm) pipeline, at velocities ranging from 5 to 20 ft/s (1.5 to 6.1 m/s) and at concentrations ranging from 15 to 45 pct by weight.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Monongalia County, W. Va. It is one of a Bureau of Mines series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 9.5 million tons of coal was produced in Monongalia County in 1957, of which more than 7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. On January I, 1954 the Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,576 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick.

"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. Fifteen coal samples, representing the Winifrede, Chilton, Alma, No. 2 Gas, Powellton, Eagle, Douglas, Sewell, Beckley, Pocahontas No.4, and Pocahontas No.3 beds in Wyoming County, and five samples, representing the Fire Creek, Pocahontas No.6, and Pocahontas No.3 beds in Mercer County, W. Va., were carbonized at 9000 C by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Expansion characteristics of the majority of samples were determined in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Chemical analyses and agglutinating values were determined for all coals. The coals were mostly strongly coking and low in ash and sulfur content. Dry, mineral-matter-free fixed-carbon content of the Wyoming County coals ranged from 63.0 to 83.4 percent. The Mercer County samples were all low volatile in rank. Yields of carbonization products were generally in accord with yields from similar rank coals of the Appalachian region. Because of their expanding tendencies, most of the medium-and low-volatile coals would require blending with lower rank coal for normal coke production.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Static water level recovers if sufficient recharge is available and well performance is improved.

During the period 1937-40 and until peacetime research was superseded in 1941 by wartime activities , the junior author was engaged in studies regarding the relative efficiency of operating methods in quarries producing crushed stone for mineral aggregates . The results of some of these studies were published as reports of investigations in 1939 and 1940 ; / others were discontinued due to war demands on personnel and time . The published reports discussed the efficiency of particular quarry operations with respect to the time consumed and without reference to costs or mechanical factors . • At the time , the field data were collected for the published reports other data were collected relative to the relationship of the numerous variable factors inherent in the operation of a churn drill to the ability of the drill to produce blast holes . The churn drill is essentially a crusher and depends. for its performance upon the foot-pounds of energy it can impart to the cutting edge of its bit . The gravity stamp mill , so well-known in western gold mines , is essentially the same type of crusher . The ratio of foot- pounds necessary to crush the rock , to the total theoretical energy developed by the falling churn- drill tools , affords a good means of evaluating the efficiency of the tool . This does not include to tal over-all efficiency involving the mechanical equipment of the drill itself or its power unit .

The cleaning of fine coal, particularly for metallurgical use, is receiving greater attention. An increase in the proportion of fine coal in the run-of-mine product has been created by changes in mining practice, and a concur-rent deterioration in the quality of the fines has occurred because of more widespread full-seam mining. These two factors, augmented by the depletion of premium beds of metallurgical coal in some areas and the resulting shift to "dirtier" beds, are providing the impetus for adoption of improved cleaning techniques. For example, froth flotation, which has been used for years in a few preparation plants, now is gaining more rapidly in acceptance. Similarly, the dense-medium cyclone, which is used widely in Europe for making difficult separations, recently has been introduced to the United States. Regardless of the cleaning process employed, the finer sizes of coal can be treated with maximum effectiveness only when they are removed from the run-of-mine product and treated separately. No present process can treat the full range of sizes together with complete effectiveness. Flotation is applicable only to the coal finer than a top size ranging between 14-and 48-mesh, and cyclones require removal of all material finer than 0.5 to 0.3 mm. from the feed. Thus, the trend toward more-effective cleaning of the fine coal imposes the attendant problem of fine screening. Whereas in the past there was little need to screen finer than about l/4-in., present developments indicate that fine screening will become increasingly prevalent.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds from which samples could be obtained in Webster County, W. Va. In 1964, approximately 825,000 tons of coal was produced in the county, of which 732,000 tons was mechanically cleaned in three preparation plants. The Sewell coal bed accounted for 94 percent of the coal produced. Twelve samples were collected from five coalbeds. Four of the samples would require upgrading to meet metallurgical requirements; two others of just over 8.0 percent ash would require some upgrading. In general the coalbed samples collected in the county were of medium-sulfur and medium-to low-ash content as received or after removal of the sink 1.58-specific-gravity material.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of the investigation discussed in this article was to evaluate the toxic hazard from gases produced when thermosetting plastic materials used for electrical insulating purposes are burned or thermally decomposed in enclosed spaces. For brevity the term ""toxicity"" is used throughout the article to refer to the nature of gases produced under these conditions. A need for immediate study of the problem was created as a re¬sult of the battle damage reports received from various United States Fleet units. These indicated that the fumes emitted when these materials were burned or thermally decomposed had, in several instances, resulted in toxic atmospheres. In attempting to develop a suitable test method for evaluating toxicity, it was recognized that no single test procedure could be expected to duplicate the variety of conditions that might exist in an actual fire aboard ship. In view of the immediate need, however, it was felt that considerable information could be obtained, at least to classify comparatively the several types of materials as to the toxic effect caused by burning or thermal decomposition, through the development of a sound empirical method which could be applied to all of the materials. On this basis, it was decided to modify the Navy flame resistance test for thermosetting plastics to render it applicable to the determination of the toxic, gases evolved when this test was employed. A wide variety of materials was tested, both molded and laminated, to cover the types commonly used by the Navy in electrical applications. Toxicity determinations were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh, Pa. Parallel tests, to determine the flame resistance of the materials, were conducted at the Material Laboratory, U. S. Navy Yard, New York, N. Y."

Oil yields, lithology, and stratigraphy have been evaluated for 15 cored wells and two sampled wells representing 10 square miles of the Tipton Member of the Green River Formation near Green River, Wyo. The area evaluated is being used by the Bureau of Mines for experimental production of oil from the oil shales in place. Lithology and oil yields were correlated to produce a stratigraphy diagram for the in situ study area, permitting precise designation of comparable sections. Because of lateral uniformity of oil shale, oil yields from eight cores and two sets of drill-cutting samples within a quarter section show the range of variation in average oil yield arising from experimental error. Variation in average oil yields from the seven cores representing the 10-square-mile study area lies within the expected experimental error. No difference in oil-shale richness across the study area is indicated. Average oil yields for three Tipton sections in the study area were deter-mined as follows: (1) The entire Tipton Member oil shale (about 145 feet thick), 13.3 gallons per ton; (2) the 40-foot upper rich zone, 21.0 gallons per ton; and (3) the 21-foot zone in which the Laramie Energy Research Center is conducting in situ experiments, 22.4 gallons per ton. One acre of the 21-foot experimental section represents 34,300 barrels of oil in place, and 1 acre of the Tipton's 40-foot rich upper layer represents 62,000 barrels.

Data are presented on the characteristics of lignites with emphasis on the composition and fusion properties of the ash. Differences in the analyses of commercial-grade lignites are related primarily to variations in moisture and ash contents. Lignite ash is generally characterized by high concentra¬tions of alkaline earth oxides and a greater tendency for retention of sulfur in the ash than higher-rank coals. Composition of ash varies significantly within and between mines. The differences within mines are significant for short distances and may be eliminated under certain circumstances by normal mixing occurring during mining. The sulfur in lignite averages 0.6 percent and is found primarily in the organic or pyritic forms with only a trace of the sulfate. During the stan¬dard laboratory asking procedures, from 60 to 100 percent of the original sul¬fur is retained in the lignite ash. Trace elements, such as uranium and germanium, in the ash from commercial¬-grade lignites are present in low concentrations, but others, primarily copper and silver, are present in specific samples in concentrations approaching those found in some commercial ores.

In broadest overview, UN global industrial production indicators released and shown in table 2 suggest that the extractive sector of the world's mineral industry in aggregate registered a very slight upturn in 1991 relative to its 1990 performance. It also shows a continued rebound in the industry from the recessionary period of the mid-to late-1980's. These same indicators as calculated in late 1991, however, reflected a very minor downturn in extractive mineral industry operations between 1989 and 1990. This latter downturn represented a notable revision from the data reported in the immediate previous edition of this chapter, which suggested a tiny upturn. The apparent slight 1991 upturn in extractive sector industrial output generally was not mirrored in the performance of the processing sectors of the global mineral industry. Although the aggregate index for the chemicals, petroleum, coal, and rubber products manufacturers (see table 3) showed a notable gain in 1991, similar indices for nonmetallic mineral products and for base metals registered declines between 1990 and 1991. Examination of regional performance indices shows that the difficulties experienced in 1990 in maintaining output levels within the countries that formerly constituted the CMEA were reinforced by trends toward reduced gains in output levels, if not actual reductions in output, in several other areas. Generally speaking, the traditional developed market economy countries recorded downswings in overall industrial activity in 1991, particularly after midyear, whereas developing market economy countries logged gains. The developed market economy country downturns, however, were not nearly as significant as were the downturns recorded for the former centrally planned economy states - those that before 1992 were either constituent Republics within the U.S.S.R. or the latter's CMEA partners.
