The increasing use of high-pressure die-cast magnesium alloys in the automobile industry requires a better understanding of the mechanical properties, the microstructure, and particularly, the relationship between these two. The goal of this study is to first understand the microstructural features which control the mechanical properties observed from an AM6OB magnesium alloy, and second, to be able to predict the local mechanical properties based on microstructural features encountered in different areas of the die-cast component. The two main tools used in this study are spherical indentation testing, used on local areas of the die-cast magnesium alloy AM6OB to detect changes in microstructure and mechanical properties, and X-ray tomography, used to non-destructively investigate the internal porosity in a sample. The results from these tests are then used to predict the local mechanical properties such as the yield stress, the strain-hardening characteristics, and the fracture properties of the AM6OB component.

The microstructure evolution kinetics of aluminum alloy B206 during artificial aging has been investigated using non-isothermal calorimetry. A combination of differential-scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile tests have been utilized to develop an Avrami model to predict the precipitation kinetics as a function of the thermal processing parameters. The Avrami coefficients, found based on a Kissinger analysis, compare well against those reported in the literature for aluminum-copper alloys. The rapid precipitation kinetics predicted by the Avrami model at temperatures higher than 200°C were assessed through a qualitative comparison against hardness measurement results. In contrast to the continuous hardening observed at 150°C, the material softens with continuing heat treatment at 250°C resulting in an overaged state. This can be attributed to the rapid precipitation kinetics at this temperature, leading to the termination of the precipitation-hardening effects at early stages of artificial aging.

"There are an estimated 50 to 100 million dry metric tonnes of low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite tailings in the Sudbury area alone, with an average nickel grade ~0.8% (plus cobalt). Pyrrhotite is a highly reactive sulphide mineral that has the potential to generate acidity; consequently, it is stored in large tailings ponds that require perpetual treatment to avoid the production of acidic drainage. Re-processing this material using bioleaching technologies has the potential to recover valuable metals, while reducing the toxicity, reactivity, and acid generating potential of the remaining residues. CanmetMINING is currently developing a stirred-tank bioleaching process to recovery nickel and cobalt from pyrrhotite-rich tailings. Stirred-tank experiments have been conducted with one tailings sample over a range of pH and temperature conditions, resulting in 80 to 90% and 70 to 80% leaching of nickel and cobalt respectively in 10 days.INTRODUCTION Sulphide tailings may represent a significant financial liability for mining companies as these wastes may produce acidic drainage under some disposal conditions. As a result, the companies must post financial bonds large enough to ensure there are sufficient funds for perpetual management of these wastes. At the same time, there are billions of dollars in metals incorporated into these mining wastes waiting to become valorized. Many sulphide tailings are amendable to bacterial oxidation for metal extraction. Re-processing of tailings using bacterial leaching has the potential to recover valuable metals from waste; and reduce the toxicity, the reactivity, and the acid generating potential of the remaining residue. By reprocessing these wastes there is an opportunity to significantly reduce liabilities and financial assurance bonds, while recovering metal values. There are an estimated 50 to 100 million dry metric tonnes of low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite-rich tailings in the Sudbury area alone with an average nickel grade ~0.8% (Peek et al., 2011) plus cobalt and copper. Pyrrhotite is separated from pentlandite concentrates by magnetic separation and flotation. It is already finely ground and has often been segregated from other tailings material, making „mining? relatively inexpensive. This represents roughly (> $100/ton) in contained value, with negligible mining costs. This paper reports on the development of a stirred-tank bioleaching process for recovering nickel and cobalt from pyrrhoitite-rich tailings, which is currently underway at Canmet MINING."

"This paper describes the theory, design, building, and testing of the passive magnetic bearing stabilizing system which is the core of the passive magnetic bearing system. The stabilizing system is made up of two large magnetic disks opposing themselves with a stabilizing disk in the center which allows the system to self-locate in a null position without the need for external power sources or sensors. When outside forces act upon the stabilizer, the magnetic fields interact with the stabilizing plate to return the system to its null position. Collaboration between two industry leaders has allowed an actual prototype to be built and tested providing real data to prove out the theory.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic bearing/stabilizer systems have many advantages over conventional mechanical bearing systems. These include near-zero drag losses and no need for lubrication since the rotating elements make no mechanical contact with the stationary elements of the bearing system. However all magnetic bearing systems must contend with a constraint known as Earnshaw’s Theorem in the early 1800’s, this theorem asserts the impossibility of constructing a stable, non-contacting, electrostatic or magnetostatic levitation system using only fixed charges or fixed magnetic poles, such as those produced by permanent magnets. Because of the constraint imposed by Earnshaw’s Theorem virtually all present-day commercial magnetic bearing systems are of the “active” type. That is, they employ electromagnets that are powered by amplifiers the inputs to which come from sensors embedded in the bearing system. These sensors are a part of a feedback loop that operates to keep the levitated rotating parts of the bearing stable and centered. The resulting complexity means that active magnetic bearings are expensive, require periodic maintenance, and continuously consume electrical power to energize their amplifiers and their electromagnets.Passive magnetic bearings are, of course, also subject to the constraints imposed by Earnshaw’s Theorem but they solve this problem in a straightforward and simple way, with only “passive” elements that take advantage of a loophole implicit in the derivation of Earnshaw’s Theorem. This loophole is that Earnshaw’s Theorem as derived applies only to static systems, i.e. an assembly of stationary permanent magnets arranged so as to levitate an object containing other permanent magnets. The theorem can be overcome if dynamic effects are taken into account. In active magnetic bearings the “dynamic effects” involve the afore-mentioned sensors, amplifiers, and electromagnets."

ABSTRACT; Agnico-Eagle’s LaRonde mine is one of the deepest mines in Canada. Ground conditions in the deeper levels can be very challenging, ranging from hard and brittle to soft and squeezing. As a result, rock mechanics and ground control practices have had to evolve considerably to accommodate progressively deeper mining activities. This paper focuses on the deeper levels of mines and how the difficult ground conditions encountered there have influenced the mining strategy. The first section examines ground control practices and support systems in highly stressed, poor quality rock. The evolution of level layout is also presented. Finally, improvements in stope sequencing are reviewed.

"Copper electrodeposition from synthetic and authentic acid mine drainage (AMD) is inhibited by ferric iron (Fe(III)), through re-oxidation of copper. Polarization to –2.5 V versus standard hydrogen electrode prevents the dissolution of predeposited copper from the cathode. Above pH 1, copper deposition is independent of Fe(III) concentration to approximately 25 g/L. Fe(III) is reduced to ferrous iron (Fe(II)), with a high combined current efficiency for iron and copper reduction. In a divided cell, the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) is almost quantitative, with efficient transfer of acidity from catholyte to anolyte. Prospects for developing electrochemical technology for complete remediation of AMD are discussed.RÉSUMÉ En raison de la réoxydation du cuivre, le fer ferrique (Fe(III)) nuit à l’électrodéposition du cuivre à partir de drainage minier acide (DMA) véritable et synthétique. Une polarisation à -2,5 V par rapport à l’électrode standard d’hydrogène empêche la dissolution du cuivre déjà déposé de la cathode. À un pH supérieur à 1, la déposition du cuivre est indépendante de la concentration en Fe(III) jusqu’à environ 25 g/L. "This paper presents regional radiometric gamma-ray spectrometry maps of Syria for total radioactivity (Ur) and surficial concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU). The maps were created by merging airborne and ground-based gamma-ray spectrometric survey datasets. On the regional radiometric eU map, eU anomalies are closely related to either phosphate and/or glauconite deposits. The Ur and eU maps delineate the boundaries of three phosphate deposits, close to the Palmyrides ridge, in the northern part of the Coastal Range and Syrian Desert. Scattered occurrences of uranium mineralization in other phosphate formations are attributed to secondary chemical and physical processes, rather than primary accumulation.RÉSUMÉ Cet article presente des cartes regionales radiometriques de spectrometrie gamma de la Syrie pour la radioactivite totale (Ur) et les concentrations en surface de l’equivalent en uranium (eU). Les cartes ont ete creees en combinant des ensembles de donnees, aeroportees et au sol, de releves de spectrometrie gamma. Sur la carte regionale radiometrique eU, les anomalies eU sont etroitement reliees aux gisements de phosphate et(ou) de glauconite. Les cartes Ur et eU delimitent les limites de trois gisements de phosphate, a proximite de la crete des Palmyrides, dans la partie nord de la chaine cotiere et du desert de Syrie. Samples of feed and product from a closed grinding circuit treating a heterogeneous lead-zinc ore were taken. The feed was subjected to laboratory batch grinding in a rod and ball mill with the objective of simulating the closed-circuit size distribution. It was concluded that the batch rod mill can closely simulate this product if only the over-all size is considered, but mineral-by-mineral large differences occur. If, as is suspected, the mineral sizes are the important factor in flotation, the differences could lead to problems in interpreting flotation results. An example of mineral recovery as a function of size is described to illustrate the potential problems.

This paper consists of two main parts. The first, under the heading Preparations, deals with suggested preparations to be carried out in advance so that loss of life might be prevented should a fire occur. The second part, under the heading Fire Procedure, deals with actual organized procedure to be followed for the preservation of life if and when a fire occurs. The writer realizes that these preparations and procedures may be to some extent applicable to only a few mines with a relatively simple vein system and that each mine would need to formulate a procedure to conform to its own particular conditions, scope, and degree of complexity. Preparations 1. - Ventilation Control The objective in ventilation control in the event of a tire underground is to keep the travelways, through which men must pass to reach surface, supplied with air not deficient in oxygen and free from gases and smoke. Without some control of the volume and direction of the main air currents flowing through the mine, the success of removing men to surface might be seriously hampered. ? This control is achieved by means of mechanical ventilation forcing air through desired airways and workings with the assistance of doors to regulate the volume and direction of the air flow. In connection with fans and doors, the possibility of short-circuiting should always be taken into consideration, as it can often nullify the value of a fan and possibly trap men in dangerous atmosphere if the short-circuiting involves the fire area. Main fans are often installed so that they can be reversed in a short time. However, fans should not be reversed unless this is found absolutely essential by those in authority. Misjudgment in this respect could cause the loss of life to men who might naturally take refuge in what they believe by experience to be a fresh air stream. Another precaution to be taken is to see that doors in airways are fastened in a fixed position so that they cannot be sucked or blown open when the fan is reversed, otherwise short-circuiting could possibly render the fan useless.

INTRODUCTION THE PURPOSE of this article on methane is to present the simple basic facts of the characteristics, detection, occurrence, and control of this natural gas in metal mines, so that operators and .safety men may deal with it with some degree of confidence. Fortunately, although methane has been noted at many metal mines throughout Canada, the occurrences usually are small flows of short duration, and the ignitions experienced have, in most cases, had minor consequences. However, methane does present a hazard that can be of serious proportions, and ?any complacent attitude toward this gas that might exist in the minds .of people engaged in underground mining operations should be dispelled when it is ,pointed out that, in Ontario alone, ignitions of this gas have resulted in at least four fatalities, and eight men seriously injured and burned, during the past three years. lt is well-known that liberation of methane can and does .occur suddenly, often in mines where no gas has been found before, and that many ignitions and explosions have occurred in so called non-gassy mines. In view of this, it is apparent that no mine can, with any degree of certainty, be classified as non-gassy. CHARACTERISTICS OF METHANIZ The characteristics of natural gas encountered in most of the Ontario mines indicate that methane is the chief constituent. Methane (CH4), commonly termed 'marsh gas', and by the coal miner 'firedamp', is a colourless, odourless, and non-poisonous gas considerably lighter than air, and is the explosive gas frequently found in coal mines. Its physiological effects, closely resemble those resulting from nitrogen.

SOME years ago the writer had the opportunity to plumb a number of mine-shafts, each of which presented various conditions and difficulties. This afforded the chance to compare several methods of shaft plumbing in the light of ease and rapidity. This comparison led to the development of an adaption of the Weisbach, or approximate alignment, method, to three wires in a single shaft. Professor Weisbach, some time prior to 1850, introduced his method of shaft plumbing by triangulation on but two wires, and was the first to show that a triangle of very narrow shape is the best for this purpose. THE WEISBACH METHOD The two-wire method, using a Weisbach triangle, is described in several .English text-books on mine surveying and is used frequently in various parts of the world, but in Canada it is almost unknown. The writer has described an example of this two-wire method (1), but a brief resumé here may clarify the explanation of its application to three wires. In this two-wire method, instead of endeavouring accurately to align the instrument with the wires, it is set only in approximate alignment, and the small angle formed at the instrument is measured. This is expressed graphically in Figure l, where C represents the position of the instrument and A and B the positions of the wires. The sides of the triangle are measured as well as the angle ACB, and the angles at B and A are found by applying the Sine Rule or the formula

Most of the recent papers read before the Institute have dealt with purely scientific matters, or with experiences in the various phases of mining operations. Very little, if anything, has been said concerning the part played by the human element in the industry. It is now opportune to consider this vital factor if we are to cope with the complex work of the present-day miner and, at the same time, meet the demands of the executive for greater efficiency. It is time we made an inventory of our knowledge to determine if we are absorbing the information so essential to modern mining practice. We must keep in close touch with all new ideas and developments in our chosen field and keep ourselves up-to-date in regard to everything pertaining to mining operations in general. The man who ceases to study ceases to advance. There are men who on attaining an executive chair give up all study, because they think they have reached the pinnacle of success. Modern industrial business, and coal-mining is no exception, demands that executive officers shall be 'live wires' -- men who are not only well-informed as to their immediate duties, but who are closely in touch with all matters of importance affecting the industry as a whole. We may be graduates of schools and colleges, but the training we receive in these institutions is only the foundation for our later work. Certainly no executive officer can know too much concerning the work he is engaged in, and the more he knows the more pleasure he will get out of his work.

"A model based control strategy was implemented at Loulo Gold Mine in Mali, to stabilise the thickener underflow stream density. This stream acts as the feed to the leaching circuit. pH control of the leaching circuit was integrated with the model-based controller due to slow process dynamics that are not suited to PID control. The controller performance was quantified over a period of 6 months, and was compared to the performance before implementation. The model based controller reduced process variability for both thickener underflow density and pH considerably, and resulted in a reduction in flocculant and lime consumption of 9.32 and 6.55%, respectively. INTRODUCTION Reagent consumption in gold processing plants significantly contributes to the total operational costs. In a typical Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, the reagent consumption associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration contribute to approximately 15% of the total operational costs (Stange, 1999). At Loulo Gold Mine, the reagent consumption associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration contributes to 6% of the total operational costs. As such, a reduction in reagent consumption will present a significant opportunity for savings on operating expenditure. Variability in feed ore characteristics results in continuous changes in steady state operating regions, which presents process control challenges as a result of the long residence times in some of the process units associated with gold processing plants. Overdosing often occurs in the presence of process variability to ensure safe operation and to maintain recovery targets. As a means of reducing reagent consumption and accounting for significant changes in the feed to gold plants, some of the plants have resorted to improving their process control strategies around their circuits. This paper focuses on the implementation of a model predictive based controller at Loulo Gold Mine on their thickener and Carbon-in-leach (CIL) tank to: •,stabilise the thickener underflow density, and •,the CIL tank pH."

"The current state of environment has been achieved by acting linearly. At the same time, we know that transition towards circular economy cannot be made the same way that we have used to, trusting only a market economy and economic growth. Environmental improvements have been promoted, some progress has been made, but major steps towards sustainability have not been taken. Industry is now facing significant change, from process related environmental thinking to product-based environmental thinking.Engineers make decisions which have lifelong influence and even longer on environment and society. Material engineers in case of saving natural resources and increasing material cycle, have an important role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Best knowledge of minerals and materials is in the material development phase. If we want to increase the cycle of different materials, it is vital to make decisions towards circular economy in early phase of product´s life cycle.The target of this study is to promote circular economy; to increase material efficiency; to save natural resources; and to extend product lifecycles in process industry via product design and material development. In this study we have a new kind of cooperation. We combine two disciplines, engineering science and fine arts. We promote sustainability via breaking out the silos. We bring the cyclic artistic thinking into engineering science and environmental research. The new research combination makes the existing information visible in a new way, and it will change attitudes and ways to act by means other than traditional linear rationality.We have tested the new working method via the industrial case study with the chosen product: the sandwich panel of construction industry. The target of the study was to create something new from the chosen product with artistic thinking. The working method will be presented in this paper."

Gyroscopic surveying instruments, which apply the physical law of a gyroscope, are being used for deter-mining the azimuth of lines with a high degree of ac-curacy. In the past ten years, gyro-theodolites have been introduced widely for underground orientation in the mining industry of Russia, Germany and South Africa. Gyroscorpic methods eliminate awkward procedures of conventional shaft plumbing, and provide more safety, excellent control and the highest precision at any point under-ground without interference with hoisting operations. The advantages of gyroscopic orientation in geodetic surveys become obvious in primary and secondary triangulation, in the determination of co-ordinates of single triangulation points, using the method of trigonometric re-section and intersection, and when traversing over long distances or in areas with obstructed view. Other fields of application are found in geophysical surveys and in the orientation of technical objects; e.g. radar stations, relay stations and ballistic missiles.

"This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1988. The program was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the Water Licence issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. Echo Bay Mines Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle.The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that the total containment concept would require reevaluation since discharge from the pond would be required within a few years. During the initial years of production, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. This program incorporated both laboratory studies as well as monitoring of the tailings pond contents and environmental conditions as the impoundment area was filling. The program showed that natural degradation phenomena, if properly utilized, are effective in lowering the concentrations of all contaminants to within Licence limits with the exception of arsenic. To ensure compliance with arsenic limits, an iron salt was added to cause arsenic to precipitate from solution in the tailings pond.As a result of our studies, the tailings management system finally implemented at Lupin Mine includes the following components:Tailings pulp retention cells constructed by dyking off one end of the tailings impoundment area.Two tailings ponds in series operated in a sequential decant and fill fashion.An iron salt solution preparation and metering system.A syphon system into which the iron salt solution is injected as the contents of the first pond are decanted into the second pond.A second syphon system for decanting the contents of the second pond to the receiving streamThis paper discusses the findings and conclusions of the waste management investigative program, describes the civil work completed to reach our final operating scenario, describes the sequence of operating the treatment system, reviews performance data, and comments on abandonment and restoration of the tailings impoundment area."

"The high copper demand as well as the lack of new high-grade deposits, are pushing the copper industry to process low-grade and refractory ores containing chalcopyrite. However, for a quantitative dissolution of copper from the chalcopyrite, the leaching performances still need to be improved. In the present research, we studied and optimized the iodide-assisted leaching of chalcopyrite in H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3 media. The evolution of surface species during leaching was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the dissolved copper. Significance of experimental results was assessed by statistical analysis while a kinetic analysis of the leaching process was performed by fitting the experimental data with the Shrinking-core model. Results showed the significant positive effect of iodide on copper extraction rate. In the presence of KI, the dissolution rate of copper was almost double than in the parallel experiments without KI. Whether using KI or not, elemental sulfur was generated on the surface of the leached chalcopyrite. Nevertheless, in the presence of KI, the passivation layer did not arrest the leaching. Analysis revealed that the leaching rate was limited by the chemical reaction control step.INTRODUCTION Due to the large demand of copper, processing low-grade ores containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) has become unavoidable (Watling, 2013). Since ores with CuFeS2 may also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic that cannot be smelted, and because low-grade ores are uneconomic to smelt, the hydrometallurgical technologies are crucial for recovering the copper (Dutrizac, 1978). Sulfate-based processes are attractive because of the lower operating costs and because the sulfate ion is more suitable in case copper would be recovered via electrowinning. In ferric sulfate solution, chalcopyrite undergoes oxidation due to the large amount of Fe(III) and dissolution due to the presence of the sulfate ion (Majima, et al., 1985). Introduction Baffin Island is still too in-accessible to be of interest to the mining industry. However, twenty years ago few people dreamed of mining iron ?ore in Labrador. A journey by air to the most remote places in the Arctic is today no more remarkable than a trip to Europe, and the technical difficulties of mining minerals of high value are not insurmountable. Some ?observations concerning the geology and mineral possibilities of Baffin Island, the largest of the Arctic islands, may therefore interest the members of the Institute, in spite of problematic practical value of the subject. The following short account is mainly based on observations made during the Baird Expedition of the Arctic Institute of North America last summer 1950), and on information available from earlier expeditions. Early Work Baffin Island was one of the first parts of Canada to attract prospectors. Frobisher sent a shipload of rocks, which he believed contained precious metals, from Baffin Island to England. This attempt, however, was a failure and no further serious prospecting work has, so far as I know, been done. During the past few years geological mapping has been carried out by the Geological Survey of Canada (Fortier. Davison, 1949-1950) in the southern parts ?of the island, along the coast of Hudson strait. In 1942, Weeks mapped the coast from Pangnirtung to the head of Cumberland fiord, and Netteling river up to Netteling lake. In the northern parts of the island, only scattered observations have been made ?by Bell, Watkins, Baird, and others.
