The Amazon region is characterized by the development of deep chemical weathering represented by widespread lateritic covers and soils. Two distinct periods of laterite formation can be distinguished: mature laterites from the Eocene-Oligocene (and locally from the end of the Cretaceous), and immature laterites from the Pleistocene. The older laterites occur on plateau landscapes,and the younger ones on widespread hilly to ?at lowlands. Both types show complete or truncated pro?les, generally covered by deep yellow to brown topsoils. The mature laterite pro?les contain high concentrations of gibbsite and/or aluminum phosphate, whereas the immature ones are poor in these minerals. The Amazon region is rich in mineral deposits related to lateritic pro?les. Some mineral deposits are of primary origin but were concentrated to economic grades by lateritic processes. The most important ore deposits are of iron, aluminum (bauxite), kaolin, manganese, gold, nickel, copper and phosphate. These are mainly related to mature pro?les. The wide spectrum of ore deposits and mineralogical and geochemical complexity of the Amazon laterites has been promoted by: (1) the prevalence of ideal conditions for laterite formation throughout much of the Tertiary; (2) the presence of varied basement lithologies due to contrasting geological environments; and (3) a variety of epi-genetic alteration types. The lateritic pro?les show a well-developed ore zonation which is related to speci?c lateritic horizons. Iron and gold deposits occur in the ferruginous horizon, which is nearest the surface; the central aluminous horizon hosts bauxites, aluminum phosphate, strontium and gold;and the lower clayey horizon contains deposits of manganese, nickel, copper and kaolin. Resistate phases which residually accumulate throughout entire pro?les include titanium (as ilmenite andanatase), chromium (as chromite), tin (as cassiterite), yttrium (as xenotime), and niobium (mainly asilmenorutile). Epigenetic alteration, caused by swamp environments developed above truncated lateritic pro?les, has led to the formation of high-grade kaolin and refractory bauxites. The laterites inthe Amazon region contain most of all known kinds of ore mineralization related to laterite processes.

"IntroductionWestar Mining Ltd. is Canada's largest producer of metallurgical coal for the export market. It currently operates two mines, the Balmer Mine at Sparwood, British Columbia producing 6 000 000 tonnes per year and the Greenhills operation at Elkford, producing 2 100000 tonnes per year. Approximately 1600 people are employed between the two mines which operate independently but share common administrative services.Like most mining companies in Canada over the past three or four years, Westar has faced rising production costs along with flat or declining prices and demand for its products. In order to survive under these conditions it has become necessary to strive for decreased costs in any way possible. Over the past two years there has been a widespread introduction of microcomputers across the company. In order to satisfy increasing demand for accurate and pertinent information while at the same time increasing productivity, the microcomputer has become an invaluable tool.This paper describes some of the problems faced by a mine maintenance department in this operating climate and how they were solved with the help of a microcomputer. It also describes some of the problems that may be encountered both with equipment and people and recommends some ways that these might be minimized or avoided. Finally, an assessment of whether or not the move to microcomputers was a current and economical one, and a brief description of future plans and projects is given.The Maintenance OrganizationIn order to appreciate fully the role that microcomputers are playing within the Maintenance Department at Westar Mining, a little background on the organization and operating philosophies is in order. Most of the comments apply directly to the Balmer operations, however, the Greenhills operation is similar in concept.The mine maintenance organization operates on a fleet based concept with these departments reporting to the maintenance superintendent: haulage trucks, shovels and drills, loaders and Caterpillar equipment, maintenance services, and rebuild services.Each of these departments is headed by an assistant superintendent and is responsible for all maintenance on the equipment on the respective fleet. Shift foreman, planners, specialists and clerical staff are assigned to each fleet. A central engineering and administrative group consisting of one engineer and three clerical positions is responsible for maintenance engineering and centralized administrative services"

Due to its unique properties, chrysotile asbestos is used in many diversified applications. In recent years, a better understanding of the structure and properties of chrysotile has evolved due to the research efforts of many investigators. A summary of the results of some of these investigations is given. An attempt is made to show the relationships between the properties of chrysotile and its crystal structure. Examples taken from the literature are cited in which methods have been developed for modifying the properties to improve the performance of asbestos in some applications. These include the effect of pH on the positive zeta potential and the addition of sodium silicate to improve filtration characteristics. The dehydroxylation and formation of forsterite when chrysotile is heated are also discussed.

The loss of fluid to the formation adjacent a fracture governs the areal extent of the fracture and the success of hydraulic fracturing as a production stimulation technique. The three flow mechanisms which control this loss are the result of the viscosity of the fracturing fluid and the permeability of the formation to the fracturing fluid, its wall building properties, and the combined effects of viscosity and compressibility of the reservoir fluid. The effects of these flow mechanisms can be evaluated in terms of a fracturing fluid coefficient, the fundamental concepts of which are developed in the paper. The fracturing fluid coefficient, which may be used in calculating the areal extent of fracturing, affords a direct measure of the effectiveness of fracturing fluids. The area of hydraulically created fractures is in-creased as the coefficient is de-creased. The fifteen-fold variation noted in this coefficient for the commercially available fracturing fluids tested resulted in a six-fold difference m the calculated areal extent of the fracture system.

This paper will review the metallurgical aspects of the completed expansion program at Quirke, and the current rehabilitation and refurbishing program at Panel. During the Quirke program, completed at the end of 1977, the plant capacity was increased from a nominal 4,500 to 7,000 short tons per milling day. The expansion of crushing, grinding, neutral thickening and filtering, leaching, partial neutralization, sand-slime separation, sand washing, C.C.D., clarification, ion exchange, mine water treatment, and tailings neutralization and pumping will be considered. The application of Enviro-Clear thickeners in the mine water treatment circuit and in the C.C.D. will be briefly reviewed. An automatic grinding and classification circuit for limestone will also be covered. The refurbishing program underway at Panel will be discussed. The Quirke and Panel plants will be contrasted and compared. In particular, reference will be made to environmental considerations. The innovative system for producing yellow cake at Panel, LAMIX, will be considered as well as the proposed treatment system for Panel tailings.

"It has been shown that the economics of the hydrometallurgy of a rare earth process depend upon the amount of acid needed to extract the metal per unit mass of the ore. In this paper, we show how to save a significant amount of acid treating a low grade ferrocarbonatite and extracting +99% constituent REEs. In order to save the acid, the alkali earth metals, originated from gangue minerals were removed prior to REE leaching. Moreover, the operating conditions of leaching reactor are optimized to leave iron behind and to leach REE selectively and effectively. Consequently, the hydrochloric acid consumption per ton of ore drops significantly compared to other processes.INTRODUCTIONThe viability of an extractive metallurgy process of rare earth elements (REEs) to produce an intermediate mixed concentrate depends upon a low-cost simple flowsheet (Bogner, 2014). It has been known that regardless of the mineral, the acid consumption is intimately associated with the operational cost (OPEX) of any REE project, particularly when the initial REE grade is low. Besides acid, the other reagents consumed in the process impact the OPEX. This makes minimizing acid consumption in an REE method a critical priority. The acid consumption in different projects has been reported to be equivalent of 100 kg to 1000 kg HCl (100%) per tonne of ore (Average: 500 kg/t HCl 100%) (Bogner, 2014). This value is strongly correlated with the grade of REE in the ore and therefore in the pre-concentrate.Previously, it has been stated that the Montviel flotation concentrate requires about 300 kg HCl (100%)/t ore to attain +99% REE recoveries using direct leaching (Yu, Verbaan, Pearse and Britt 2013). Hence, for an ore feed rate of 2500 t/d ROM, a large acid production plant (744 t/d HCl 100%) would be required for acid leaching of such concentrate. The equivalent Chlor-alkali plant is estimated to cost M$ 150 (CAPEX) and may require 100 MW power. Therefore, there is a necessity to improve the extractive hydrometallurgy and to reduce the acid consumption significantly."

The Lac Otelnuk iron property is located in the Province of Québec in the Northern Labrador Trough. The Labrador Trough is an extensive geosyncline of Proterozoic rocks, unconformably underlain by Archean gneisses. The Lac Otelnuk iron property hosts two significant magnetite iron-formation taconite deposits that outcrop, are sub-horizontal and are known to extend for at least 25 kilometres along strike. The host sedimentary rock package that includes a cherty iron formation is weakly metamorphosed to greenschist facies.

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). Dual phase (DP) steels are designed to consist of hard martensite dispersed in a relatively soft ferrite matrix, which offers a favorable combination of high strength with good deformability. Fiber laser welding (FLW) is becoming increasingly important for joining advanced materials due to its flexibility and deep penetration. In this study, the microstructure of a dual phase steel, DP980, welded by FLW technique was carefully analysed. Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulation coupled with analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the FLW process produced significant microstructural changes in a narrow heat affected zone (HAZ) and fusion zone (FZ), which can result in dramatic changes in mechanical properties. This is reflected in the micro-hardness profile obtained across the welded material. The salient phase transitions induced by the FLW, including the formation of new martensite grains in the upper-critical HAZ and FZ, are discussed.

In situ leaching of copper has the potential to deliver low-cost recovery for soluble copper deposits of sufficient permeability. In order to provide key inputs for modeling of the in situ leaching process, bench scale test work can be used in conjunction with geochemical software to identify key leaching and precipitation reactions. A case study is presented in which a series of flow-through acid leaching tests were conducted on drill core sections from a porphyry copper deposit without crushing or grinding. Concentrations of copper and other key elements were monitored in the recirculating leach solution over several months. A geochemical model of each leaching test was prepared using Geochemist's Workbench using a combination of diffusion-controlled and reaction-controlled rate mechanisms. Key reactions included leaching of chrysocolla, iron oxides, and plagioclase. The model was able to simultaneously satisfy the evolving chemistry of the recirculating leach solution, mineralogy of the head and leach residue, measured acid consumption, and leaching rates for key minerals reported from previous laboratory studies. Opportunities and limitations for scaling up the model to simulate the commercial wellfield are discussed.

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. "The use of calcine for selective zinc precipitation requires specialist knowledge to achieve satisfactory flowsheet design. Calcine from the bed of a fluid roaster is preferred, and factors such as the size distribution of ground calcine, the stoichiometric ratio of the calcine precipitant to the initial dissolved zinc concentration and the moisture content of the resultant filter cake are parameters which require critical attention. Extensive testing in a fully-integrated electrolytic zinc plant pilot plant has demonstrated that properly designed selective zinc precipitation plants using calcine as the precipitant are reliable operating units.The advantages of using calcine instead of limestone for selective zinc precipitation include a decreased cost of reagents, as well as avoiding the formation of by-product gypsum.Process simulation modelling has demonstrated that the use of calcine in this context has widespread application in the design of zinc plants with superior impurity and water balance control characteristics. A particularly powerful approach involves closed circuit washing. In this mode, filtrate from the selective zinc precipitation step is used to wash a zinc plant residue such as jarosite, and the resulting filtrate is returned to the selective zinc precipitation section. IntroductionThe Selective Zinc Precipitation (SZP) Process, developed and patented by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) may be used to achieve simultaneously, water balance and impurity control in an electrolytic zinc plantO,2). Impurities which may be controlled by the SZP process include chlorine, magnesium, manganese, potassium and sodium.In the SZP process, basic zinc sulphate is precipitated from a zinc sulphate solution by either limestone, lime or a compound containing zinc oxide, usually calcined zinc sulphide concentrate (calcine) or alternatively zinc oxide fume .The solids containing basic zinc sulphate are separated, typically, by filtration and returned to the zinc plant circuit as a neutralizing agent. The zinc depleted solution can either be discarded, or used to wash residues, thereby achieving water balance and impurity control (Fig. I)."

The changes in defects patterns or in element condition index during visual inspection of bridges are primary concerns for inspectors. This paper presents a new approach for change detection of defects in bridges by identifying changes in texture patterns through spectral analysis of digital images. The commonly used method for change detection is image differentiation. This subtraction method requires images to be of same size, scale, and rotation. However, no two images are same in real practices. Thus, image registration is required to align images and to produce change maps. This process is tedious and it is difficult often to achieve a good registered image. But, the change detection task can be readily modeled in frequency domain for texture patterns discrimination and also for quantifying their properties. This paper proposes a novel approach for change detection by transforming digital images into Fourier spectrum. In new coordinate system, 1-D signature functions can be drawn which facilitates easy comparison of textures in different directions. The proposed methodology provides useful tools for comparison of inspection history graphically and quantitatively. In practice, expensive sensors are used to detect subtle change in defect patterns. The proposed method can be used to detect any subtle change in defect patterns using digital images at much lower cost.

"In February 1980, Dome Mines Limited announced a $50 million expansion program which would result in a 50% increase in mill capacity from the present 1,815 tonnes per day to an eventual production rate of 2, 720 tonnes per day in the year 1984. As an integral and necessary part of this planned expansion, a new vertical production shaft, No. 8 Shaft, would be sunk from surface to a depth of 1,645 metres.Throughout the seventy-year history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. However, the key to successfully locating ore deposits lies in the recognition of the favourable environments in which they generally occur. First and foremost, the exercise of locating the No. 8 shaft became an exercise in geological deduction based on the projection of these favourable lithologic environments.In November 1980, after detailed engineering work was completed, the total cost of the project was estimated at $75.5 million 1980 dollars or $91 million dollars allowing for inflation over a four-year construction period. These estimates include the shaft, significant replacement and alterations to the milling process, and an upgrading of the plant."

Process improvements which have reduced the lead content of slag from the Brunswick lead blast furnace are described. Microscope examination and electron microprobe analyses, supported by the results of slag settling and viscosity tests, showed that typically about 70% of the lead in the lead blast-furnace slag was present in the form of entrained prills of metallic lead. The total lead content was found to increase with the magnetic susceptibility of the slag. Measurements in the furnace settler indicated the presence of a magnetite-rich layer between bullion and slag, arising from high magnetite levels in the slag. This layer was believed to inhibit the settling of entrained lead from the slag. Tracer tests showed that the average slag residence time in the settler was less than 2 minutes. Improvements in coke quality and sizing, which led to a reduction in the slag magnetite content, and the installation of a larger settler and a continuous Roy tapper, have all contributed to a significant decrease in the slag lead content.

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used and effective processes for mineral benefication. First introduced in 1911, flotation technology has seen many developments over the past 80-plus years. Innovations in reagent chemistry, equipment design, process analysis and process control have given design and plant engineers a powerful set of "tools" for process optimization. However, it does not follow that all flotation systems are optimized. As Klimpel observes: "The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is relatively easy to get reasonable results, and relatively difficult to get excellent results." Klimpel [1988] While reasonable was sufficient in the past. competitive forces will make excellent necessary in the future. Judging by the activities in many Canadian plants this transition is already underway.

Introduction The main line of ascent in the development of the nickel industry may be traced back through the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to its earliest antecedents, the Canadian Copper Company and the Orford Copper Company. Mining geology is but one aspect of the overall development of this organization, and the stress it has placed on geology grew according to the need. In the early days, intensive geology was not required because ore supply was not one of the main problems of this or any of the pioneer companies. The difficulty then was to find economic methods for reducing the ores to nickel and copper, and markets for absorbing nickel in the face of a limited demand from consumers heavily prejudiced in favour of the New Caledonia product. "Very early in the history of the region it was patent to everyone that to share in the full benefits of the industry the same individuals or company must control the whole of the operation necessary to manufacture the finished product' (1, p. 45). These conditions were fulfilled for the International Nickel Company in 1902 when the Canadian Copper Company (incorporated 1886), with its ample ore supply, took the initiative to merge its interests with those of the Orford Copper (Refining) Company (incorporated 1887) to form the new company which, with reorganizational changes, emerged as the producer of the overwhelming bulk of the world's nickel. The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, entered the field in 1899 with a refining process, and over a period of years acquired ore through purchase of mining properties. This Company operated successfully and independently until 1929 when its assets were joined with those of the International Nickel Company in order to permit the most economic exploitation of the Frood-Stobie orebody in which both Companies were interested.

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. IN January, 1939, Dome Mines, Limited, purchased a few bars of an alloy drill-steel for the purpose of testing its fatigue resisting qualities as compared with those of a straight carbon-steel then in general use at the mine. A steel of the following analysis was selected: Carbon 1.00% Sulphur 0.022 Chromium 1.26 Silicon 0.17% Phosphorus 0.028 Vanadium 0.1 Manganese 0.32% Molybdenum 0.30 This steel has a tensile strength of 180,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 380, as compared with a tensile strength of 114,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 230 for the standard carbon drill steels, in the as rolled' condition. The result of this test showed that about five times as many runs could be obtained from the alloy steel before failure from fatigue. It was therefore decided to replace gradually the one-inch quarter-octagon carbon steel, then in use, with seven-eighths quarter-octagon alloy steel. In January, 1940, six machines was placed on the seven-eighths steel and this was gradually increased until now (March 15th, 1941) fifty per cent of the steel being used is alloy steel. An O'Donovan furnace is used at the Dome for heat-treating their carbon drill-steel. In this furnace, a magnet withdraws the steel when the critical temperature has been reached, and the operator then places the steel in the quenching tank. Not being able to use this furnace for the alloy steel, the management felt that some means should be developed to determine the quenching temperature without depending upon the operator's judgment of the correct 'colour'. With the assistance of the Canadian General Electric Company, a radiation-type vacuum thermocouple pyrometer was adapted to this purpose, with excellent results; in fact, with this instrument no previous experience in hardening is necessary and results are remarkably uniform.
