THE high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as terne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys.1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. APPARATUS AND METHOD The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from ½ to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. ± 0.1°. Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. The following paper describes current mining practices of the Riverside Cement Co. at its Crestmore plant, Riverside, California. For a number of years the Riverside Cement Co. obtained its raw materials by surface quarry operations but after these deposits were exhausted for equipment available at that time, the company started underground mining. Mine workings were begun in 1927 to 1930 for the recovery of limestone by block-caving methods. Geology The bed of limestone that is being worked is a metamorphosed and recrystallized limestone, which is generally white in color and from medium to coarsely crystalline. This bed is fissured by water courses that vary from minute cracks to large areas. The bed has also been cracked by intrusions along the footwall and hanging wall. These walls are coarse-grained, gray, quartz granodiorite. The strike of the deposit is north and south and it dips to the east at an angle of approximately 50°. The bed is approximately 1700 ft. long, 270 ft, thick at right angles to the dip at the middle of the deposit and tapers to a thickness of approximately 100 ft. at each end. Mining Methods The mine layout consists of four main levels with elevations as follows: 892 Collar of shaft. 800 Manway level used for ventilation, prospect purposes and as an entrance into the stopes. 700 Mining level where all material is extracted and on which are located the tapping grizzlies. This is the elevation from which all main cutoff stopes and undercutting work is started. 660 Haulage level where the limestone is drawn from transfer raises into the cars and is transported to the tipple by electric locomotives. 633 Level where all water is collected and which keeps the general water table below the working levels. A detailed description of the mine was given in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6795, in June 1934. Current Block Development The first blocks to be caved were developed very much after the procedure followed in the copper mines of Arizona. This paper covers the ninth block to be caved. with a hard, tough rock like our limestone, it was found that some alterations in the development and control of dm, i, caving were. necessary to secure better crushing effect and provide more safety for such secondary blasting as is required. Sequence of Block Development 1. The fringes of the 800-ft. manway level are driven to confirm the diamond-drill information and serve to determine the final location and development required for the block (Fig. I).

Previously published experimental data showing that both collectable and non-collectable sulfide films may be formed on chrysocolla were analysed, and chemical mechanisms were proposed for the formation of the films. A special technique was developed by which the quantity of sulfur adsorbed was determined for samples sulfidized under different conditions of pH and soluble sulfide concentration. The data on sulfur adsorption were used together with the expression for the equilibrium constant for the proposed reaction to indicate the validity of the chemical mechanism theory. A recent paper 1 about contact angle studies on chrysocolla reported the effects of pH value and sodium sulfide concentration during sulfidization upon the character of the surfaces produced. In each experiment the surface of a specimen of chrysocolla was prepared by grinding it with fine abrasive and washing it in tap water. The specimen was then placed in the sulfidizing solution for 10 min, rinsed in tap water, treated for 15 min in a solution containing 30 mg of potassium amyl xanthate per liter, rinsed in distilled water, and tested for air adhesion in a contact angle apparatus. The results, when plotted as in Fig. 1, showed an island representing conditions giving air adherent or collectable surfaces surrounded by conditions giving non-collectable surfaces. Particular interest may be attached to the region of non-collectability to the right of and above the island in Fig. 1, and to the boundry curve separating these two regions. It is apparent that at any pH from 4.0 to 6.0, where a collectable surface may be produced, a sufficient increase in the sulfide concentration results in a non-collectable surface. Thus it appears that too much soluble sulfide has a depressing effect upon the mineral, just as it has in sulfide flotation. This paper presents some speculations regarding the chemical mechanisms by which the collectable and non-collectable sulfide films may be formed and reports on a physical-chemical study intended to support these speculations. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The experimental results presented in the previous paper were analysed in several ways in an attempt to understand better the chemical mechanisms involved. For several points on the boundary to the right of the region of contact in Fig. 1, molar concentrations of H+, OH-, HS-, and S= ions, as well as various ion concentration products, were calculated. THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Boston, Mass.).-I am sure we are indebted to Prof: Hayward for his addition to our knowledge of the influence of sulphur on steel. As he has said in this paper, sulphur has had many defenders in recent years. It seems to me, however, that, while it may be old school to believe in the detrimental action of sulphur, it is not yet old school to believe in segregation; that while it may be that 0.1 per cent. of sulphur has no very great effect on the physical properties of steel, a ladle analysis of 0.1 per cent. of sulphur may readily result in 0.2 or 0.3 per cent. sulphur being present in the segregated portion of the ingot, and that, it seems to me, might be a rather serious matter. J. S. UNGER, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Prof. Hayward has presented the results of an investigation along a line to which I have devoted considerable time and attention, and I am particularly pleased to note that his results are in accord with my own and further tend to prove the fact that the old, established prejudice against sulphur is based more on belief than actual facts. I have felt for years that tooo much stress was placed on the harmful influence of certain elements in steel such as sulphur, phosphorus, copper, etc., but it has only been within recent years that efforts have been made to, establish the truth. Practically all the investigations made to date have proven that these elements within reasonable limits are harmless and, in fact, that for certain purposes the addition of these elements is beneficial. In referring to copper, J. E. Stead, Vice-President of the British Iron and Steel Institute, said at their last meeting: "Even today one comes across steel specifications in which copper is barred, which can only be regarded as ail indication of ignorance, if not stupidity, of those who prescribe the composition of steel, for it has been long ago proved that copper in steel, instead of being an evil, is quite harmless, and is sometimes distinctly beneficial." Sulphur owes its evil name to the early days of the manufacture of steel. Chemical analyses were crude, and failure due to either poor raw materials or metallurgical treatment were many. Sulphur being a comparatively easy element to determine with reasonable accuracy, particular attention was called to the amount of sulphur, and the failure was attributed to it, without giving any consideration to other causes. Internal friction and elastic modulus variations in electrorefined titanium, iodide refined titanium, and alloys of the latter material with oxygen, nitrogen, aluminum, and zirconium were investigated. No oxygen peak was detected with electrorefined titanium but, provided precautions were taken to prevent increases in background damping, an oxygen peak at about 410°C could be resolved with each of the other materials. An additional partially resolved peak was observed at 500°C in a Ti-N alloy. An anomaly in the variation of rigidity modulus with temperature was observed. Possible mechanisms for the formation of any oxygen peak have been discussed. PRATT, Bratina, and Chalmersl investigated the internal friction of commercial purity titanium and alloys of this material containing 1.5, 3.5, and 4.5 at. pct O. With commercial titanium the internal friction curve consisted of two components, a background which increased steadily with temperature and a peak at about 600" C which was due to grain boundary relaxation. In the Ti-O alloys, however, an additional internal friction peak was observed at 430" to 450°C and, since this peak increased in height as the oxygen content was increased, it was thought to be associated with the presence of oxygen. The diffusion of oxygen in titanium at temperatures between 300" and 500° C is believed to have marked effects in its tensile properties2'3 and the present internal friction measurements were undertaken to obtain further information on this diffusion, using material of higher purity than that of Pratt et d. and an apparatus of very much greater sensitivity. In the course of the investigation a number of important limitations on the work of Pratt et al. were revealed and results have been obtained which emphasize the need for ensuring that in this type of experiment, internal friction is independent of strain amplitude and that the values obtained are reproducible. 1) MATERIALS AND APPARATUS The basis material from which the majority of the specimens was prepared was iodide-refined titanium, the major impurities in which were oxygen and nitrogen—the metallic impurities being present at concentrations less than 0.001 at. pct. The hardness of this material after arc melting, forging, and swaging to rods 1/4 in. diameter was Dph = 110. Specimens 10 in. long and 0.020 in. (0.51 mm) diameter were prepared from these rods by further swaging and wire drawing and were finally annealed in vacuo (5 x 10-6 mmHg) for 24 hr at 800°C. minum bronze. Nearly all copper-base alloys are improved by rolling processes, but the copper-aluminum alloys seem to possess equally good properties when cast or rolled; this is a remarkable metallurgical fact. Another important property of these copper-aluminum alloys is their resistance to alternating stress. Many tests indicate that their resistance is greater in this respect than that of some steels, and I have seen instances when cast aluminum-bronze bolts have outlived five steel bolts in foundation work subject to severe shocks. I mention these various instances to indicate that work originally started as research for substitution of one material for another frequently develops 212 article which has properties not possessed by the original metal or alloy. I have dwelt particularly on the aluminum bronzes because recently I have done more special work on them than on other alloys, but I believe that the use of aluminum itself, in many combinations of metals, is a very important subject for investigation. Undoubtedly, after the war, the cost of aluminum will be reduced from its present price, and considering its low specific gravity it offers a very interesting and important field for research in the non-ferrous business. Naturally, if combinations containing aluminum can be developed in view of a probably increasing supply of metal, the cost will be reduced. This will benefit the industry generally and will immediately conserve tin. Bronzes, Bearing Metals, and Solders G. K. Burgess* and R. W. Woodward,† Washington, D. C.— From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information sewed by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried. THE total production of crude oil in Texas during 1924 was said to be 133,613,985 bbl. as compared with 125,991,628 bbl. in 1923.1 Subtracting from these figures the yield of the Gulf Coast fields, there remains, for the other part. of Texas, a yield of 106,272,573 bbl. in 1924, as compared with 101,931,595 bbl. in 1923. This represents an increased, production of over 4,250,000 bbl. for all of Texas outside of the Gulf Coast or Salt Dome fields. Within this same region, in 1924, there were 3624 completions, of which 2352 were oil or oil and gas wells, 7 were gassers, and 1265 were dry holes. Thus, nearly 35 per cent. of the completions were dry holes. In 1923, there were 4134 completions, with 2853 oil or oil and gas wells, 2 gas wells, and 1279, or 31 per cent. of the total, dry holes. Outside of the Gulf Coast region, six major pools were discovered and developed in 1924.; two pools, previously discovered, were extended far beyond their limits at the end of 1923, and many smaller pools were opened. The major pools were the Big Lake field, in Reagan Co., the New Richland field, in Navarro Co., the Harmel, Carey, and Ragle pools, in south Archer County, and the Wortham field, in Freestone and Limestone Counties. Fields that were notably extended were the Panhandle producing area and the Luling field. Many wildcat wells have been drilled; most -of these were failures, but several opened .pools and several have had sufficiently favorable results to. lead to further drilling. The activity of the operators in searching for new production was very intense during 1924, and indications point to as feverish a campaign during the coming year. This will be stimulated by rising prices for crude oil. There are good reasons for believing that new pools will be discovered along the Mexia fault zone, in Archer, Young, Baylor, and Throckmorton Counties, in the great central region of Texas where we now have the Mitchell County and Reagan County pools, and very likely in the eastern Red River Counties including Cooke and Grayson. On the other hand, with the opening of the year, there is no new big pool in sight. An outstanding feature of the production end of the business is the increasing reliance placed on geological work and geological recommendations. Not in five or six years has there been such a demand for first-class geologists.

AS a possible method of improving the elevated temperature strength properties of zirconium, an investigation was initiated on the feasibility of producing a dispersion-strengthened material. Because of the high reactivity of zirconium, its high solubility for oxygen, and the stability of the Zr-0 solid solution, the major problem in such a development is choice of a suitable dispersant. Thus, in the present investigation we were concerned primarily with the stability of various dispersants in the zirconium matrix. The experimental procedure consisted of blending powders of zirconium and a dispersant, followed by cold compaction and extrusion. The best available source of -325 mesh zirconium powder contained between 1500 and 3500 ppm Oz; to this material, powders of zirconium carbide (5 p max), vanadium carbide (5 p max), alumina (0.03 p average), lan-thana (0.8 to 2 p), ceria (0.8 to 2 p), yttria (0.8 to 2 p), calcia (44 p rnax), or thoria (0.6 to 0.8 p) were added in amounts of 7 vol pct and compacted at 65 tsi. A cylindrical compact having a density between 70 and 80 pct of theoretical and dimensions of 1 in. diam by 1-114 in. high was thus produced. After canning in copper, these billets could be extruded (5: 1) on a 54-ton capacity, slow-traverse hydraulic press with the billet temperature at 1550°F and the extrusion die at 900°F. However, lack of densifica-tion of some of the extruded billets necessitated ratios of at least 23 :1. Ultimately, all billets were successfully extruded at 1500°F to 0.190 in. diam (32 :I), fully dense rods using a 200-ton capacity press and a ram speed of 90 ipm. The microstructures of as-extruded Zr-7 vol pct LazOS and Zr-7 vol pct Y2Os are shown in Fig. l(a) and (c), respectively. These structures are similar to all the as-extruded materials and consist of an elongated, single-phase zirconium matrix dispersed with oxide or carbide particles. Very little porosity is observed, and the interface between matrix and particles appears satisfactory. The size and distribution of particles, however, are not ideally of the type desired for dispersion strengthening. Since the primary study was of particle stability with respect to zirconium, no attempt was made to overcome agglomeration during powder blending and fabrication. VARIOUS rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two,1 three,2 five,4 an indefinite number,5 and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, † the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required, changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: I. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, - the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation. Therefore the stable end orientation should be a symmetrical one around the stress axis with respect to the active slip systems such that lattice rotations resulting from slip will cancel each other and prevent a resultant change in orientation. (Rotational symmetry only-not translation, inversion, nor others-is considered here.) Thus a metal under a pure stress should develop a texture consisting of one or more of the crystallographically symmetrical directions, <100>, <110> or <111> for cubic metals or <0001>, <1010> or <1120> for hexagonal dose-packed metals, parallel to the stress axis. 2. Approximately 5000 tons of zinc ore a day was mined during 1943 in the Mascot-Jefferson City district in East Tennessee. This ore came from the Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite, of Ordovician age. The Kings-port is composed of 350 to 400 ft. of limestone and dolomite. Thin cherts, sandy layers and shales are numerous. Frequently, the limestones are altered to crystalline dolomite. The Kingsport is divisible into four main lithologic zones. These divisions are illustrated in an accompanying table, which gives detailed sections of the ore-bearing beds as found in the mines and shows the exact positions of the various ore zones within the formation. Key beds are described and the practical applications of stratigraphy in mapping, prospecting and mining are discussed. Introduction The Mascot-Jefferson City zinc district is in Knox and Jefferson Counties, in the Great Valley of East Tennessee. It extends from Mascot, I3 miles northeast of Knoxville, to Jefferson City, about 30 miles northeast of that city. The American Zinc Company of Tennessee is producing from five mines in the district, in which it has operated for more than 30 years. The only other important producer is the Universal Exploration Co. The approximate daily production of the district in 1943 was 5000 tons of sulphide ore, grading from 2.5 to 6 per cent zinc. Small amounts of oxidized ore are mined intermittently. The Knox dolomite has been described by various geologists,&apos;-&apos; but no detailed descriptions of the rock sections revealed by mining have been published. Rock units are not conspicuously different and careful study is required to distinguish them. Nevertheless, familiarity with the stratigraphy of the mineralized zones is essential to successful exploration and extraction of the ores; therefore the purpose of this paper is to give detailed stratigraphic sections as measured in the mines, to discuss their important features and to show their relationship to the stratigraphy of the district. Generalized Section Table I gives the most characteristic general features of the major stratigraphic units. The formation names given in parenthesis are locally and widely used terms, the correlations of which are not necessarily established. For this reason they are put in quotation marks and are replaced by more restricted terms. The names "Mascot" and "Kingsport" were adopted from local towns. They were chosen jointly by Josiah Bridge, of the Federal Geological Survey, and the senior author for use in their separate unpublished manuscripts describing the Knox dolomite in East Tennessee. Descriptions of the type sections may soon be published. The name "Longview" was first applied by Butts6 in Alabama.

Reservoir pressure is the pressure at which a fluid is held in a state of equilibrium in a porous stratum. This pressure may be a result of the genesis of oil or gas and its subsequent migration into and through an adjacent porous stratum, or of hydraulic head. Reservoir pressure is an indication of the potential energy contained in the reservoir, and when it is known the engineer is in a position to use it to advantage in recovering and lifting the oil. It is important to know the pressures in any type of reservoir, but this knowledge is probably of greater value in a limestone reservoir, as at Hobbs, where producing rates or conditions may be more sensitive to changes in pressures. The Hobbs field is in east central Lea County, New Mexico. The discovery well was completed by the Midwest Refining C I. in 1928, but intensive development did not begin until after the completion by the Humble Oil and Refining Co. of No. 1-A Bowers in February, 1930. There are 143 producing wells on approximately 5500 acres. The field has not been defined to the northwest, but a projection of structural contours indicates that the productive area ultimately may cover 7500 acres. The producing horizon is the White or Crystalline lime of Permian age. The top of the lime is found at an average depth of 4000 ft. and the wells penetrate it an average distance of 200 ft. The main pay zone is an oolitic stratum about 25 ft. below the top, and varies from 2 to 15 ft. in thickness. Other porous or cavernous strata are found lower in the lime but have little saturation. The initial production varied from 100 to 25,000 bbl. per day, depending perhaps to some extent on the structural location but chiefly on the porosity of the pay. The initial gas-oil ratio varied from 325 to 16,000 cu. ft. per barrel. In wells where the top of the White lime was found below 350 ft. below sea level (Fig. 1)) the gas-oil ratio was usually less than 1500 cu. ft. per barrel, while in wells higher than 350 ft. below sea level, the ratio was usually above 2000 cu. ft. per barrel. The water table has been determined at about 620 ft. below sea level, by three wells on the west side of the field. With few exceptions, the wells have been completed with 7-in. casing cemented

The earliest U. S. patent on a crushing machine was issued in 1830. The device incorporated the drop hammer principle later used in the famous stamp mill, whose history is so intimately linked with that of the golden age of American Mining. Eli Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock-breaker --the Blake jaw crusher--patented in 1858. The idea of his mechanical principle, the powerful-toggle linkage, was so sound that today the Blake -type jaw crusher is the standard by which all jaw crushers are judged. In 1881, Philetus Gates was granted a patent on a machine which included in its design all the essential features of the modern gyra tory crusher. For some years after these pioneer machines were developed, crushing requirements were quite simple. All underground mining and open-pit quarrying was done by hand with tonnages and rock sizes generally small. In the milling of precious metal ores, stamp mills were popular as the final reduction machine. The stamps were fed with an ore size readily produced by one break through small gyratory or jaw crushers. Even in large underground mining operations, there was no demand for large crushers; and increasing tonnage requirements were met by duplicating the small units. The Homestake gold mine in South Dakota was a good example, where in 19 15 twenty -two small Gates gyratory crushers were used to prepare the ore for the batteries of 2,500 stamps. Open pit mines and the introduction of the steam shovel created a demand for larger crushers, which led to the development of a gyratory with an 18 in. (457 mm) receiving opening. Up to this time, the jaw crusher had kept pace with the gyratory, both from the standpoint of receiving opening and capacity; but now the gyratory stepped into a 15-year lead with larger and larger sizes. This trend toward large primary crushers started just before the turn of the century, and in 1910 crushers with 48 in. (1.22 m) receiving openings were being built. About this time, the jaw crusher was revived in a great contribution to primary crushing by the introduction of the 84 in. by 60 in. (2. 13 by 1. 52 m) machine. This crusher was usually followed by a 24 in. (6 10 mm) opening gyratory crusher for secondary breakage, a system which reawakened the industry to the use of the jaw crusher as a primary breaker. It is interesting that although his machines never came into general use, Thomas A. Edison ranks as a pioneer in the development of the large primary breaker. THERE have been numerous examples in recent years of the similarity between aging behavior and diffusion behavior, where a plot of the logarithm of the aging rate versus the reciprocal of the absolute temperature yields an approximate straight line, analogous to a similar plot of the diffusion coefficient D (log D vs. 1/T). Austin and Rickettl have pointed out that this linear relationship holds empirically for the de- composition of austenite into pearlite and bainite in carbon steels, and Robertson&apos; has shown similar trends in the aging of 24S-type aluminum alloys. Jenkins and Bucknall³ have also demonstrated the association between aging and diffusion rates for nickel-silicon-copper alloys. Jetter and Mehl,4 however, have shown that the maximum rate of dilation of a series of aluminum-silicon alloys does not show this linear relation and Mehl5 has pointed out that careful study of available knowledge indicates that "aging rates increase with temperature approximately exponentially, whereas D increases precisely exponentially." He further notes that "the rate of aging at a given temperature is the greater the lower the melting point of the alloy, which is also true for D." This paper describes the aging changes occurring in a zinc-25 pct manganese-15 pct copper-0.1 pct aluminum die casting alloy. It was found that this alloy does show this linear relationship and use was made of this relationship to estimate aging rates at low temperatures from data acquired at elevated temperatures. It should be noted that the aging reaction is being studied only indirectly, using changes in certain properties as criteria of the progress of the phenomenon. This alloy is purely an experimental one and is not available commercially. Zinc-Manganese-Copper System: The zinc-rich portion of the zinc-manganese-copper diagram which is of significance in the present work is quite uncertain. X ray examination of the alloy as die cast shows a phase similar to the epsilon phase (hexagonal close packed) of the copper-zinc system. All of the data accumulated indicate that the epsilon phase of the zinc-manganese-copper alloy is stable at high temperatures; that is, 500°C or above. Below this temperature a new phase is precipitated on annealing, and a decrease in specific volume occurs. At elevated temperatures this phase change occurs quite rapidly, while at room temperature the alloy has shown no change after several years. According to X ray data, this precipitated phase resembles the gamma phase (cubic) of the copper-zinc system, a hard and brittle structure. A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in I920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner,1 M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. [T] The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Besse¬mer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden¬-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be over-equipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed.

The use of zinc dust for precipitating the pecious metals from cyanide solutions is well established now in many places, and has many advantages over the shavings method of precipitation. Although much work has been done o,n methods of testing zinc dust, as yet. no absolutely positive test has been devised to determine the value of the material. Certain facts are known, but often it happens that results on a working scale are not as expected from the laboratory tests. The purpose of this paper is to record some obscrvations made while testing a large variety of zinc-dust samples in the laboratory. W. J. Sharwoodl has described standard analytical methods, which have been followed, with the changes noted. The regular determinations include zinc oxide, by solution in ammonia and ammonium chloride, lead, and precipitating efficiency. In some cases cadmium was determined by a method similar to that described by J E Clennell.2 I will discuss the precipitating-efficiency test in detail. The procedure is as follows: "A solution of potassium silver cyanide is prepared by dissolving 10 grams of silver cyanide (AgCN) and 5 grams of 99 %&apos; potassium cyanide in a little water and diluting up to 1000 cc. It is then adjusted by addition of a little more XCN or AgCN until the solution indicates from 0.12% to 0.15% free KCN by titration with standard silver nitrate. The titration is best made by using a 10-cc. or 20-cc. sample, adding 1 CC. of 2 % potassium iodide, and a slight excess of ammonia, as the end point is then sharper. Or 15 grams of pure crystallized XAg(CN)2 may be dissolved in a liter of water and 1.5 grams XCN added. " Weigh out 0.5 gram zinc dust into a 300-cc. beaker. Add a few cubic centimeters of watcr and stir until zinc is well mixed, then pour in 250 cc. of the prepared solution, stirring vigorously. See that all lumps are broken up, and continue stirring for fully five minutes. Stir occasionally (at least every 10 minutes) until the end of two hours from the addition of the solution. Then filter upon an 11-cm. filter, wash precipitate thoroughly, sprinkle with test lead, wrap it carefully in the paper, place in a scarifier with about 20 grams test lead, burn paper cautiously in muffle, scorify five minutes, cupel at low temperature and weigh silver. Milligrams silver obtained from 0.5 gram zinc X 0.0606 = percentage precipitating efflciency."³

IN a recent discussion of the mineral resource position of the United States, published in the September 1946 issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, I expressed my conviction that ore deposits of major magnitude remain to be found in this country and that they can be found without undue cost or risk. I stated with equally strong conviction, however, that if the search for such deposits is to be notably successful there must be, among other things, a reorientation of philosophy and mental habits on the part of many who would be connected with the search. I would now like to enlarge upon that statement. For such a purpose, we may consider that the search for concealed deposits involves four steps: (I) the selection of areas for further study; (2) the geologic study of those areas in order to verify their general favorableness and in order to choose specific patches worthy of being tested; (3) the decision whether exploration of the patches chosen should actually be undertaken; and (4) the exploration itself. The first two steps and the last rest upon the judgment and skill of geologists. The third step-the decision whether exploration should be undertaken-rests upon management. In my opinion, the philosophies or principles that have guided these steps in the past are now inadequate. PHILOSOPHY OF APPRAISAL If concealed deposits are to be looked for, how are the places of their possible concealment to be recognized? Every known mineralized area still in the prospect stage has already been repeatedly examined and condemned. As for those deposits concealed under later rocks, there may be not even the clue of a near-by outcrop for engineer or geologist to consider. How then, are we to know where to look? Geologic Probability In the early days of our mining industry, ore deposits were found mainly by "following the ore." Later, as such opportunities decreased, and as geologic concepts became accepted, deposits were found more and more through use of the notion of geologic probability. Many instances can be cited wherein a courageous operator ignored the implications of the unsuccessful efforts of predecessors and, solely by "following the ore," converted a discredited prospect into a good mine. Similar experience doubtless will occur in the future, but "following the ore" will no longer in itself find new deposits in the amount needed. Nor can enough new ore be expected from further use of the notion of geologic probability, for, as mentioned above, our known prospects `have already been ex-

The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media has been solved numerically only for the case of linear or radially symmetric reservoirs. A recently introduced numerical method for solving the unsteady-state heat flow equation in two dimensions is applied to the calculation of the depletion of a square region containing a perfect gas. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimensionless parameters. The solutions are compared with published .solutions for radial reservoirs. I NTR ODUCTION The problem of unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media gives rise to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. Numerical approximations to solutions of the gas flow problem have been obtained by the stepwise solution of an associated difference equation1,2. However, the methods so far developed have required that the reservoir be either linear or radially symmetric. This restriction in shape has been necessary so that only two independent variables be considered, namely, one distance variable and time. In order to deal with reservoirs having more realistic shapes, it is necessary to develop numerical procedures for the solution of the gas flow problem involving two distance variables. A numerical procedure, denoted as the alternating-direction implicit method, for the solution of the heat-flow problem in two dimensions has recently been introduced" By the use of this procedure, approximate solutions have been obtained for heat-flow problems in a square8, and in regions having various non-rectangular boundariesa. Because of the similarity between the equation for heat conduction in solids and the equation for gas flow in porous media, it is reasonable to expect that the alternating-direction implicit method should also be useful for solving the gas flow problem in various two-dimensional regions. Solutions have been calculated for the simplest two-dimensional region, a square reservoir with a single well in the center. While reservoirs of such simple geometry seldom, if ever, exist, the solution of this problem is of some practical importance because it is also the solution of another problem, that of determining the depletion history about an individual well in an infinite uniform reservoir containing wells spaced throughout on a square lattice and producing equally from each well. Finally, it is of interest to compare solutions for a square reservoir with those for a circular reservoir and to determine the effect of the shape of the boundary for that particular case. This paper deals with an investigation of the use of steam filtration for filter cake dewatering and shows that it may be applied on a practical scale. The advent of larger quantities of minus 1/4 in. coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content. A lowering of the surface tension within the limits of normal wetting agent dosage results in a rather insignificant decrease in cake moisture content. Not until the dosage is increased to a point well beyond this limit is there an appreciable decrease in moisture. At these high dosage levels, interfacial tension is a major factor contributing to the appreciable moisture reduction obtained. Since no suitable method has been developed to recover and recycle this wetting agent, this phenomena is not of practical significance. On the other hand, a reduction in liquid viscosity has a pronounced effect on cake moisture. While it is readily apparent that one method of reducing liquid viscosity is to heat the entire feed slurry, it is equally apparent that this would not be an economic approach except, perhaps, in certain isolated cases. It does, however, suggest that water circuits should be designed to conserve heat as much as possible and to make use of any waste heat that may be available. The use of hot air as a heat carrying medium for drying porous materials on a filter has been practiced for many years. However, this method is restricted to materials with a high air rate in the order of 100 cfm/ ft2 because of the low heat release per unit weight of air passing through the cake. The normal fine coal filter cake has an air porosity far too low to make this a practical approach. Various types of radiant heating devices have been investigated and can significantly lower moisture content at reasonable thermal efficiency. However,
