The prevention of quartz flotation by chelation of activating ions with the tetrasodium salt of EDTA in oleic acid flotation was investigated using a small vacuum flotation cell. It was found that flotation of quartz could be entirely suppressed in the presence of activating ions during complete flotation of hematite. It was further shown that the concentration of activating ions liberated from Wisconsin Gogebic taconite is sufficient to float quartz in an oleic acid system. Large tonnages of low grade siliceous iron ores occur on the iron ranges of the Lake Superior district. Although the lower grade nonmagnetic types are currently not of economic importance, they constitute a large future potential source of iron and steel, and hence have been the subject for extensive research on their beneficiation. TACONITES Of particular interest to the Dept. of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin have been the low grade nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic Range. These occur as five members of the iron formation and have been described in detail elsewhere.' Essentially they consist of an intimate mixture of hematite, goethite and quartz, with minor amounts of siderite, magnetite, iron containing silicates, and manganese minerals. A typical mean analysis based on the Bureau of Mines analyses' is: SiO2-52.50%, Fe2O3-43.40%, (Fe-30.38%), A12O3-1.15%, P2O5-0.07%, Mn2O3-0.29%, CaO-0.07%, (S-0.03%), Loss on ignition-2.00%. The quartz in these ores is of a microcrystalline variety,2 and so intimately associated with the iron oxide minerals that extremely fine grinding, in the order of minus 325 mesh, is required for liberation. During grinding and subsequent flotation, the concentration of quartz activating ions in the pulp becomes sufficiently high to activate quartz which floats along with the iron minerals in the presence of oleic acid. cook3 and co-workers concluded that oxidized iron ores released appreciable quantities of quartz-activating ions in water pulps. This is shown to be true in the present investigation. As a matter of fact, application of this phenomenon, as well as the intentional addition of activating calcium ions, is made use of in the an ionic flotation of silica from the iron oxide minerals.4,5 In view of the above, it becomes almost impossible to effect a sharp separation of quartz in the oleic acid flotation of the iron oxide minerals from these taconites, even with satisfactory liberation. This fact led to the current investigation to find a means of linking the activating ions with a chelating agent. The aim was to establish basic data for the quartz-water-oleic acid system which might not only be applicable to iron ores, but also to the flotation of other siliceous ores as well. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Vacuum Flotation Cell: The vacuum flotation used in this investigation is similar to that used by previous investigators.6,7,8 The cell consisted of a 100 ml graduated cylinder with the lip removed. Vacuum from a water aspirator was applied to the cell through a trap; suitable tubing, and a rubber stopper inserted in the top of the cell. Constant absolute pressure was maintained by means of a manometer connected to the trap with a tee. Flotation: The required amount of activating ion solution was pipetted into a beaker. This was then diluted to 99.0 ml with water having a pH below that desired for the test, or so adjusted with HC1. After addition of 1.0 ml of oleic acid solution (2.0 mg oleic acid per ml), the pH was readjusted to the desired value with NaOH, and the entire solution transferred to the cell containing 1.5 gm of quartz. After vigorously agitating the cell and its contents for 2 min, the vacuum was applied to the cell and the estimated degree of flotation observed for a 3-min period. THE perfluoro acids and derivatives show unusual surface-active properties that qualify them as possible flotation reagents. They lower the surface tension of water from 15 to 20 dynes below that obtainable with the corresponding hydrocarbon compounds.1, 2 Fluorochemicals adsorb very strongly on solid surfaces to give films that exhibit larger contact angles than films of the corresponding hydrocarbons."' * The large contact angles probably result from the terminal —CF3 group. The perfluoro acids are made by electrolysis of the corresponding carboxylic acid in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.5 From the perfluoro acids many derivatives may be obtained, such as amides, amines, alcohols, xanthates, ethers and esters and others. Since the fluorinated analogues of the conventional hydrocarbon flotation collectors possess enhanced surface properties, a few were selected for testing. Because a survey of all possible minerals and reagent combinations would be out of the question, hematite was chosen to represent a nonsulphide system and pyrite to represent a sulphide system. The fluorinated reagents used in these experiments were prepared in the research laboratories of Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Some were synthesized especially for this research. They are not available cokmercially. Separation of Nonsulphide Ores: The separation of oxides from silica has always been a challenge to the flotation industry because differences in surface properties of the minerals are normally insufficient to produce clean concentrates. Oleic acid," rosin acids,' and amine salts% ave been used to considerable extent to effect separation of metal oxides and silica. The system hematite-silica was chosen to represent the nonsulphides both because of its difficulty of separation and because large tonnages of easily obtainable material are available, such as gravity concentration tailings and nonmagnetic taconites on the Mesabi Range. The wash-ore tailings used here contained approximately 35 pct iron after desliming. Samples of the material used in this work were part of the same lot used by Chang, Cooke, and Huch9 and were prepared in an identical manner. Reagents for Nonsulphide Ores: Since one of the purposes of this investigation was to compare hydrocarbons with fluorocarbons, reagents of known behavior such as oleic acid, and the alkali metal salts of certain resin acids (Dresinates), were established as standards. Hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons of comparable chain length and other experimental fluorocarbons were tried as collectors for hematite. A list of the materials used and the concentrations of their stock solutions are given in Table I. Since silica can be selectively floated from hematite by conventional reagents," a few fluorocarbon reagents were also tried for this purpose. Their composition and concentrations are given in Table 11. Most of these reagents served the dual function of collector and frother. In the case of F-11 flotation did not occur but it served as a frother when F-6 was employed as a collector. Reagent grade sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide were used to regulate the pH. Deionized water containing less than 0.1 ppm of salts expressed as NaCl was used for all solutions and flotation tests. The pneumatic flotation cell consisted of a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel with a source of filtered air which could be controlled by a needle valve." A 50-g sample of ore and 250 ml of deionized water were added to the flotation cell and stirred slowly. The reagents were added and the pulp was conditioned before air was admitted to the cell. Approximately 15 ml of the pulp were removed for pH determination before flotation was started and were then returned to the system. The pH was again measured after flotation. Air was admitted to the cell until no further flotation occurred or until the character of the float changed markedly. Both the float and the nonfloat products were filtered, dried, weighed. and assayed for iron. The cell was washed in hot water and rinsed with deionized water after each test. Occasionally the cell was cleaned with concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron oxide particles from the glass frit. With the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made. to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45' to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the caring behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass Earing BehavioR oF Brass Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (II3)[I12] This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;' Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photo-grams for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. Blast furnace feed specifications are being revolutionized because of the large increase in iron pellet production from low-grade ores of the Lake Superior region. Recent laboratory findings aimed at a better understanding of factors influencing the physical quality of pellets produced from taconite concentrates are reviewed. Tests for determining better product quality, the effects of additives, and production factors are discussed. The current revolution in specifications for blast furnace feed is typified to a great extent by the recent tremendous growth in iron ore pellet production from low grade ores of the Lake Superior region. Indeed, pellets are responsible, at least in part, for many of the stringent new requirements that are being placed on the suppliers of furnace raw materials. As the tonnage of pellets going to the steel mills increases, more and more attention is being turned to the detailed characteristics that make this product an ideal blast furnace feed. Control of quality in pellets is similar to that of any other product. A basic understanding of the factors that are encountered in their production, from the crude ore through to the finished product, is required, along with careful process supervision and frequent quality checks. Normally, chemical grade is not a problem. This usually can be controlled within the desired specifications by minor operating variations in the con- centrator. While future changes in requirements may result in the need for self-fluxing pellets1 or other chemical changes, today's quality demands center primarily around the physical characteristics of the pellets. It is in this area that many of the recent laboratory studies have proven helpful to the operating plants. A better understanding of the physical factors involved in pelletizing has provided the basis for a continuing program of quality improvement. Tigerschiold and Ilmoni2 and Cooke with various associates are responsible for the development of much of the basic understanding of the pelletiz-ing process. These earlier findings have served as a most useful background for this work. LABORATORY PROCEDURES Magnetite concentrates produced from eastern Mesabi Range magnetic taconites were used for all of the work reported herein. The sizing and chemical analysis of a random sample are shown in Table t Additives usually are mixed with the concentrates in taconite plants before pelletizing to improve the strength characteristics of the unfired balls. Ben-tonite, soda ash, and coal are in common use. The bentonite used in these studies was of the Wyoming sodium type; the soda ash was a standard commercia1 brand. Anthrafines were used where coal was called for. The procedure for making batches of balls at the Hibbing Laboratory is as follows: In an especially designed mulling equipment 2800 g of dry ore are mixed for 10 min with the desired additives. Water is added and mixing continued for 1 1/2 min. The charge is removed from the muller and put through a mechanical shredder to break down any lumps that may have formed. sixty previously formed seed balls are placed in the balling drum, which is in fact a 6 x 16-in. diam airplane tire turning at 53 Wm. This report summarizes a systematic 20-year study of the organic sulfur compounds in Wasson, Texas, crude oil and, to a lesser extent, of three other crude oils, that has culminated in some 200 individual sulfur-compound identifications. The development and application of special separation and identification techniques generally suitable for the characterization of sulfur compounds in any crude oil are discussed. This report reviews early sulfur literature covering petroleum sulfur compound identifications completed before this study was begun, and cites 58 papers resulting from this work. The sulfur compounds in petroleum, both as to type and quantity, have long been of concern to the petroleum industry, and such compositional data are not only of theoretical interest, but also of practical value.

Several derivatives of soybean oil are currently manufactured and sold on the open market. Of these, the use of methylsoyate as a direct fuel substitute in diesel engines has been thoroughly researched and practically applied. The use of this product as a fuel gave rise to the idea of using a similar substitution in ANFO blasting agent. The first year of a three-year research program has been sponsored by the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council. The project is funded for the purpose of opening up of new markets for Missouri soybean products.

Dust diseases are much before the public at present, but little reliable information on the subject is readily available to the layman; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of these diseases, their causes, remedies, and prevention. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable; in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to study the subject with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive. This bulletin is an attempt to assemble information in convenient form on effects of breathing dusts, largely in the mining and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material or all types of dust diseases but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject, especially with reference to silicosis.

More than 3 trillion gal of water are used annually by the mineral industry. Of this, approximately 21/2 trillion gal are recirculated, the rest constituting intake water. The major users are natural gas processing plants and phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore producers. Water was used by the mineral industry for mining (6%), processing (64%), cooling and condensing (27%), and miscellaneous uses such as boiler feed and sanitary purposes (3%). Whereas total water use is dependent on the quantity of material processed and on the particular process requirements of an industry, recirculation is dependent on processing, as well as cooling and condensing requirements, quality of new water intake, and the necessity for treating new and discharged water. Consumed water, on the other hand, is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, and temperature and humidity in the area. Based on this analysis, an increase in water use by the mineral industry of 21/2 times by 1985 is forecast. Wster intake, however, will only rise 62%, because of a substantial increase in recirculation. In one report of a special series concerning the water resources of the United States, the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources, 87th Congress, estimated that water demand would double by 1980 and triple by 2000.' In view of the possible water deficiencies that might result from such expanded usage and the need for research guidance, the Bureau of Mines organized and carried out a statistical canvass of water use in the mineral industry for calendar year 1962. The data used in this paper, unless otherwise noted, are derived from that canvass.' The efforts in this paper are devoted toward summarization of the canvass and analysis of the data. SOME DEFINITIONS Intake: Water introduced from an external source for the first time into a given mine or plant regardless of quality. Intake water is also called new water, water withdrawn, or makeup water. Fresh Water: Water suitable for cooking and drinking. Saline Water: Water containing more than 1000 parts per million of dissolved solids. Contaminated Water: Water not suitable for domestic use, but excluding saline water. Recirculated Water: Water reused to conserve intake water. Solutions that are recycled primarily because of fixed metallurgical practices, such as copper leaching solutions containing sulfuric acid, are excluded. Gross Water Used: Recirculated water plus intake water. Also called total water used. Consumed Water: Water that is lost by evaporation, as well as water lost in product. Seepage and transferred water are not considered consumed. The use of either intake or recirculated water may result in consumption. However, because of difficulties in measuring consulmption, consumed water is defined as the residual between intake and water discharged from the mine or plant. Mineral Industry: For the purposes of this paper, mineral industry includes all metal and nonmetal surface and underground mines and their associated processing plants, as well as custom mills, coal washing plants and associated mines, petroleum and natural gas well drillers, natural gas processing plants, and secondary recovery operations. WATER USE IN THE MINERAL INDUSTRY Water used by the mineral industry constitutes a relatively minor fraction of the water withdrawn by all users. Data compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1960 indicate that water withdrawals, exclusive of that used to generate hydropower, approximate 99 trillion gal annually.3 Our data indicate that water withdrawals by the mineral industry comprise only 1% of this total, or 2% of the water withdrawn by industrial users. Use by Industry: Water used by various mineral industries is shown in Table I. The table indicates that close to one-half of the gross water used by the mineral industry in 1962 was used by natural gas processing plants, followed by sand and gravel, phosphate rock, and iron ore producers. The largest aggregate users of water are also the largest users per dollar of product. For example, Fig. 1 shows that the natural gas processing and phosphate rock industries are very large users of water per dollar of product. Their recirculation per

The solubility of graphite in CaO-S2O2-Al,O3 slags was measured by equilibrating slag samples with graphite crucibles and CO gas. Carbon contents as high as 2 ut pct were obtained in CaO-saturated, CaO-A1,O3 slags, and 1.3 wt pct in slags of the composition CaO.Si0,. Although the observed conditions for Sic formation were in agreement with those predicted from thermodynamic data, CaC, was found to form at a lower temperature than predicted frotn thermodynamic data. From measurements of the equilibrium carbon content as a function of CO Partial pressure, it was found that carbide ions dissolve in CaO-A12O3 melts with a valence of minus two. The carbon content increased with CaO concentration in Ca0-Al,O3 melts and increased with SiO, content along the CaO'AlO3-CaOSi0 join in the ternary system. When solid CaC2 was added to CaO-A12O3 and CaO-SiO2-A12O3 slags, it was found that one of the oxides in the slag was reduced by the carbide (Al2O3 in the forrner and SiOz in the latter). In electric furnace steelmaking, a double-slag practice is frequently used to meet alloy specifications. Initially a flush slag, which is oxidizing in nature, is used to remove phosphorus and carbon from the steel bath. Later in the refining period, the flush slag is replaced by a highly reducing carbidic slag. When calcium carbide is formed in or added to a finishing slag, the slag is effective as a desulfurizing agent and also permits alloying elements such as chromium, vanadium, and tungsten to be added to the slag in the form of oxides. The oxides are readily reduced by calcium carbide, thereby minimizing the use of expensive ferroalloys. More work has been done on the thermodynamics of silicon carbide in slags than on calcium carbide. Baird and alor' and Kay and alor' determined the free energy of formation of Sic by measuring the partial pressure of CO in equilibrium with solid silica, silicon carbide, and graphite. Using a similar technique, they determined SiOz activities in CaO-SiOz and Ca0-Si0,-A1203 slags. Rein and chipman3 also determined the free energy of formation of Sic using slag-metal equilibrium measurements. A literature survey has uncovered only one experimental study of the behavior of CaC, in slag systems. Shanahan and cooke4 report the results of some preliminary experiments on the solubility and stability of CaC, in a CaO-A1,03 and a Ca0-Si0-A1,03 slag at a temperature of about 1500". The carbon solubility as CaC, in a slag containing 50 pct CaO and 50 pct A1203 was reported to be 0.6 pct. They also review earlier work on the binary CaO-CaC, system. A eutectic exists in this system, but various investigators disagree on the eutectic temperature and composition. eal has given an explanation for carbide furnace erruptions in terms of the thermodynamic properties of CaC,; his analysis is not based on experimental data, but on compiled data for the free energies of formation of CaC, and CO.' , These data for steel-making temperatures are all extrapolated from the results of low-temperature measurements. In the experiments described in this paper, slag samples were equilibrated with graphite crucibles and with mixtures of CO and argon or with CO gas at 1 atm total pressure for measurement of the carbon solubility. Most of the work was done on Ca0-A1203 binary slags, although in some experiments CaO-SiO, and Ca0-Si0,-A1,03 slags were used. EXPERIMENTAL Slag samples of the desired composition for the solubility measurements were obtained by blending pre-fused master slags. The master slags were prepared by fusing mixtures of reagent-grade CaC03 with either A1,03 or Si0, in a graphite crucible. The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. The influence of partial decomposition to high temperature bainite on reaction kinetics at a lower temperature has been studied in two alloy steels. Reaction at the lower temperature is retarded by the prior treatment, and the extent of decomposition may be reduced. Interpretation of these results is based on a mechanism involving a limitation in the nucleation and growth of bainite plates. OF the major transformations in steel, the characteristics and general behavior of the bainite reaction are probably the least understood and appreciated. Limitations of space preclude a critical evaluation of the present status of the bainite transformation in this presentation; however, such a treatment will shortly appear elsewhere. Only the salient features pertinent to the present investigation will be introduced briefly here. Although the reaction curve for the formation of bainite is similar to that for a nucleation and growth process, other kinetic features are more in keeping with the martensitic mode of transformation. A definite temperature exists above which austenite will not transform to bainite.1-5 his temperature, which has been designated B., is determined by the composition of the austenite. Unlike other nucleation and growth processes, the amount of austenite transformed to .bainite is a function of reaction temperature. The extent of decomposition increases from 0 at H. to 100 pct at some lower temperature.' , This lower temperature will be designated B1 and appears to be relatively insensitive to austenite composition.% 5 The similarity in the effect of reaction temperature on the bainite and martensite transformations serves to emphasize the close connection between these two decomposition processes. Austenite decomposition in the bainite range proceeds without partition of the alloying elements.8-11 Partition of carbon has been proposed" primarily on the basis that partial transformation to bainite lowers M, and increases the amount of austenite retained at room temperature. Carbon enrichment resuslting from such partition has been employed to explain the influence of reaction temperature on the extent of decomposition.'" It should be noted, however, that no enrichment has been detected experimentally in high carbon steels.1,14,15 Lattice-parameter measurements of retained austenite in steels containing 0.3 to 0.4 pct C have indicated carbon enrichment, 3,10-18 although the split indicative of a high carbon martensite has not been reported. Carbon enrichment, if it does occur, must be highly localized around the bainite plates. Therefore, carbon enrichment does not account for the influence of temperature on the progress of the bainite reaction."' Thermal history is known to influence the martensite transformation through stabilization.20,21 No similar phenomenon in the bainite transformation has been reported. Materials and Procedure Two triple-alloy steels were chosen for this investigation. Their compositions were as given in Table I. These steels were chosen because the pearlite reaction did not interfere with the bainite reaction. Steel K was received in the cast condition and forged from 2 in. square bars to 1/2 x1 3/4 in. plates. The 4340 was received as 11/4 in. hot-rolled rounds. Both steels were homogenized in vacuum for one week at 2300°F in order to minimize segregation. A quenching dilatometer similar to that described by Flinn, Cook, and Fellows" was employed for the kinetic measurements. Dimensional changes were detected by a differential transformer coupled with a high speed recorder. The dilatometer was mounted so that it could be transferred to any one of three furnaces: a nitrogen-atmosphere austenitiz-ing furnace and two salt-bath furnaces for isothermal transformation. Dilatometer specimens were 1/32 x 1/4x 1/2 in. with a gage length of 1.4 in. All specimens were nickel plated in order to minimize decarburization during austenitizing. The austenitiz-ing conditions consisted of 10 min at the temperatures given above. Austenitizing temperatures were controlled to 210°F and transformation temperatures to ±3ºF. The precision of the dimensional measurements was estimated to be ± 5 x105 in. per in. ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson' who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida. More recent reports give the results of investigations that have been in progress in cooperation between the Florida Geological Survey and the U. S. Geological Survey since 1930. As a result, the ground-water geology and hydrology of Florida are now so well known that ground-water problems such as confronted early investigators no longer exist. However, new problems arise and new discoveries are made as the demand for more ground water increases with the development of the State. Water-Bearing Formations Descriptions of the geologic formations and a map showing their distribution at the surface are given in a recent report by Cooke.' The geologic formations that yield the ground-water supplies in Florida represent only a small part (about 1000 ft) of the total thickness of the sedimentary rocks (more than 15,000 ft) that underlie Florida. The water-bearing rocks that yield fresh water include more than two dozen formations that range in age from Eocene to recent. The Eocene formations, which consist chiefly of limestone, are the oldest and the deepest of the formations in Florida that yield fresh water to wells. In 1944, on the basis of a study of the foraminifera, the Applins -ivided the limestone of Eocene age into six formations, which are as follows, from top to bottom: Age or group Formation Jackson Ocala limestone icAvon Park limestone Claiborne -j Tallahassee limestone aLake City limestone Wilcox Salt Mountain limestone xOldsmar limestone The Ocala limestone and the underlying formations of Claiborne age, along with some of the overlying limestone of Oligocene and Miocene age, constitute the principal source of water in Florida and southeastern Georgia and generally may be regarded as forming one artesian aquifer or water-bearing unit. This aquifer is referred to in this paper as the Floridan aquifer, a name proposed by Parker.' In part of Seminole County alone more than 1000 flowing wells yield water from the Floridan aquifer. A yield of 6500 gpm, or about 9.5 million gal per day, by natural flow from a well penetrating the aquifer at Jacksonville, Florida, was observed in 1942. A yield of about 7000 gpm by natural flow was reported for a well 1390 ft deep at St. Augustine in 1887. The largest yield reported from a pumped well penetrating the aquifer is 7500 gpm, or about 10.5 million gal per day. The aquifer is also the source of some of the large springs, such as Silver Springs, whose discharge, according to measurements made by the U. S. Geological Survey, has ranged from 526 to 1350 sec-ft, or from 340 to 872 million gal per day. The top of the Ocala limestone, as represented by contours in Fig. 1, indicates in a general way the geologic structure of the formations that comprise the Floridan aquifer. DURING an investigation of high-strength manganese bronze by the Engineering Division of the Air Service, at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, particles of a "blue constituent" were noted in the microstructure of most of the bronzes examined. The constitution of the simple copper-zinc base alloy is still a matter of dispute in spite of the fact that the copper-zinc series is one of the oldest industrially important groups of alloys, and has received the early consideration of scientific research. The diagram, according to the most recent work,1 is shown in Fig. 1. The disputed questions involve the termination of the beta field and the line at 470° C. The earliest experimenter, Roberts-Austin, detected an arrest in some of his cooling curves at approximately this temperature and ascribed them to the formation of a eutectic; it has since been proved that there are no eutectics in this series. Shepherd2 was unable to detect any thermal arrests at this temperature; his diagram was essentially as shown in Fig. 1, except that the line at 470° C. was omitted and the beta phase carried down to normal temperatures. Later, Carpenter and Edwards,3 by a very painstaking research, definitely established the authenticity of the line but attributed it to the breakdown of the beta constituent into a eutectoid of alpha and gamma. Microscopic evidence of the formation of the eutectoid is doubtful and it seems more likely to be due to an allotropic change in the beta constituent as shown by Fig. 1. At least for practical purposes, it is more convenient to think of the structure of a 60-40 brass as a mixture of alpha and beta prime crystals rather than alpha plus an unresolvable eutectoid of "apparent beta" as it has often been called.

If it had not been for the persistent cold wind, the sun blazing out of a cloudless blue sky would have made it one of those warm, idyllic early spring days which attract the socalled "snowbirds" to Northern Mexico for a vacation at this time of year. At a drill site perched on top of a rather exposed mountain we were installing a number of borehole extensometers in diamond drill holes. A Threading Problem For the uninitiated in geotechnical instrumentation, a borehole extensometer is a series of anchors installed at various depths in a borehole, each anchor being independently connected by a tensioned wire to a measuring device set in the collar of the hole. Any movement of the rock at depth is detected by the anchors and transmitted by the wires to the measuring device. Flexible plastic tubing is used as a spacer between the anchors and the measuring wires are run up the inside of the tube. At this particular site we were installing an instrument string nearly 1000 ft in length. Threading wire only 0.041 in. in diam through 1000 ft of plastic pipe is almost as difficult as getting the proverbial camel through the eye of a needle.

WHILe engaged, in the year 1856, in determining the oil-bearing properties of some bituminous coals from Western Kentucky, by subjecting them to dry distillation in an iron retort, which held about a pint;, and to the neck of which were attached several bottles, for collecting the carbon oils, and washing and measuring the gas, I observed that there was a very great gain in the weight of coke thus made, over that obtained from the same coal when charred in a platinum crucible, as is usual in the laboratory for making the proximate analysis of coal. It was thought at the time that the increase of coke, by the former mode of treating the coal, was due to the pressure which the retarded gas exerted upon the solid carbon, and the possible fixing of a portion of the carbon from the volatile hydrocarbons. For the purpose of obtaining a more definite idea of the effects of pressure on the coking of coals, a series of experiments were made this spring under my direction, by my assistant, Dr. G. M. Levete. The results are highly instructive and full of interest, since they point out some peculiarities in the nature of bituminous coals which

A new center for mining and metallurgical research is developing at Sterling Forest, N. Y., under the auspices of Union Carbide Corp. Here is to be located the Union Carbide Nuclear and Ore Research Laboratories. In truth, history has repeated itself; the Sterling Forest area in the days of the Revolutionary War, and for many years thereafter, was the mining and metallurgical center of the US. For in these Ramapo hills along the New York-New Jersey border, iron ore was mined, pig lion was cast, and the weapons of war and the plowshares of peace were forged. Before embarking on an historical pilgrimage to yesteryear-a brief description of Sterling Forest. Located in Orange County, N. Y., near Tuxedo, immediately north of the New York-New Jersey State line, and just west of the Erie Railroad and the New York State Thruway, Sterling Forest is approximately 35 mi from New York City. Title was acquired in 1956 from the Harriman family by City Investing Co. Its President, Robert W. Dowling, has established himself as a city planner, having conceived such projects as Pittsburgh's Gateway Center and Philadelphia's Penn Center. A unique, self-contained community -is planned that will contain light industry and centers for research and engineering. Colonies of homes will be interspersed throughout the 20,000 acres of forest land, lakes, and rolling hills. Culture will not be neglected, for Sterling Forest will be the new home for the annual Empire State Music Festival The Sterling Forest Gardens, 125 acres of landscaped woodland and streams, will become the "world's largest permanent floral showplace" The Sterling Forest International Research Building was opened earlier this year, and designed to provide all facilities needed by small growth research companies. The first major company to acquire land to construct research buildings at Sterling Forest is Union Carbide. 1763 ... Discovery of iron ore In turning back the pages of history, a fascinating story can be told of special interest to the metallurgist, the mining engineer, and perhaps even the sociologist. For, where new communities are planned today, older communities had been born, matured, and died. In these hills had lived the. iron miners, the blacksmiths, the lumbermen, the masons, and the teamsters that had given America its start in heavy industry. This was the area where the forests were crisscrossed with many wood roads that brought logs to the charcoal pits, and iron ore to the furnaces. Men make history. Our story brings forth many names of men known as ironmasters, or as industrial leaders-Hasenclever, Faesch, Erskine, Townsend, Ryerson, Parrott, Cooper, Hewitt, Jay Cooke, and Harriman. The name Sterling is derived from a Scotch Lord, the Fifth Earl of Stirling (in its earlier spelling). Lord Stirling was one of seven Englishmen granted a patent of land in the Ramapo hills by Queen Anne in 1707, known as the Cheesecock Patent. He sent an agent, Cornelius Board, to America in 1730, with the express purpose of looking for copper deposits. While he found no copper in his travels up and down the Ramapo Valley, he did find iron ore in two localities: first, in the vicinity of what is now Ringwood, N. J.; second, five miles to the north. There he constructed a forge and furnace at the edge of a lake in 1736, naming the land Stirling Property, after his patron. In 1740, the Ogden family in Newark bought land from Board at Ringwood and began smelting of iron in 1741. The Ringwood story Soon, a genius in the person of Peter Hasenclever appeared on the scene. He was attracted by an advertisement in the New York Mercury for March 5, 1764, in which David Ogden of Newark offered

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite. The word glauconite is derived from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was mined and marketed as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of manufactured fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to a decline in the use of greensand in agriculture. The material has since been recognized as useful in water treatment. Unfortunately, despite large reserves and world- wide distribution, glauconite has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This is probably due mostly to a paucity of research on its potential commercial uses. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and a generally low potash content (viz., less than 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of as much as 22.5 kg/m2 were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 4.5 to 11 kg/m2 (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of its slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as poison, burning, or black marls. The availability of higher grade potash salts from other mineral sources and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the latter 1800s. During the mid-1800s the greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000/y. Toward the end of the century, however, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000 in value. By 19 10 there were only six or eight greensand producers grossing less than $5,000/y each (Tyler, 1934). There was a brief revival of the US industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the latter 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was used in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s it was used for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base exchange properties of glauconite were recognized for water treatment and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Mansfield (1922) does not mention base exchange even though this phenomenon was known in 1916 or earlier. From 1916 through 1922 several patents for the use of glauconite as a water softening agent were granted. A method was also patented for treating greensand to improve it for water softening and ready regeneration with common sodium chloride brine (Borrowman, 1920, Spencer, 1924, Kriegsheim and Vaughan, 1930). Treated glauconite, on contact with water containing magnesia or lime, takes up magnesium or calcium ions and releases sodium ions. This exchange is limited to the outer surface of glauconite grains, and when all the surfaces have absorbed their capacity, the grains must be regenerated. Regeneration, simply stated, consists of treating or backwashing the glauconite with a sodium chloride solution, which replaces the hard water elements with sodium, thus reviving the glauconite. The process has become more sophisticated due to competition among companies in the water softening business. Greensand products for water softening generally consisted of several different grades distinguished by the particular treatment the glauconite was given during processing. The standard greensand water softener was produced from natural glauconite that was only washed and classified. Its characteristics for water softening are given in [Table 1].
