ARRANGEMENTS for the Annual Meeting of the Institute were well advanced at the end of December as the following program will show. Heretofore this has been printed separately, but its inclusion in the Annual Review issue of MINING AND METALLURGY will, it is hoped, make it more easily available for reference until the final program is issued, which will be distributed at the meeting. Added details will appear in the February issue. Last year's meeting drew a record crowd of over 2300 which should be exceeded this year. Early reservations at the headquarters hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria, or any other convenient hotel are desirable, as are prompt reservations for the Annual Dinner. No one need worry about too much speechmaking this year, for the honors will be awarded and accepted in a few words instead of a few paragraphs, in seconds rather than minutes.

In the magnetite iron ore pelletization process, oxidation of magnetite followed by sintering of the oxidized magnetite (hematite) is desirable. Optimum preheating time & temperature and roasting time & temperature is required to get the desired properties of the pellets with magnetite, hematite, and hematite–magnetite blend. In order to utilize the magnetite resources in a current induration furnace, which is designed for hematite resources, detailed pelletization studies have been carried out to optimize the firing cycle for magnetite concentrate as well as magnetite with hematite concentrate. Under optimum conditions, such as preheating temperature 1000–1150 °C, preheating time 10 min, roasting temperature 1250 °C and roasting time 7.5 min, the cold compression strength (CCS) of magnetite roasted pellets was 325 kg/p, and this was due to recrystallization of secondary hematite particles, and development of the strong slag bond between primary and secondary hematite particles. The strength of hematite concentrate pellets was 260 kg/p. From laboratory studies, it was found that without disturbing the induration furnace firing cycle, which is designed for hematite ore ~5%, magnetite concentrate can be used along with hematite concentrate in pellet blend and the strength of the pellets was 270 kg/p. As the magnetite concentrate increases in the blend beyond 5%, the preheating zone residence time should be increased or a supply of extra oxygen is required. Laboratory as well as plant investigation has shown that the addition of magnetite to the hematite mix blend improved the strength of the pellets compared to hematite pellet alone.

Risk management is concerned with the whole spectrum of financial, geological, engineering, legal, governmental, social and occasionally ethnic issues, concerned with mining projects. The inherent risks in mining operations are well publicised, but new issues and hazards arrive on the scene and lake precedence, but the older risks still remain, while insurance cover may not he ‘full cover’ in the future. It has long been recognised that quantitative approaches to risk analysis can play a major role, but although these methods are capable of considerable theoretical precision, the lack of sound risk input data and experienced personnel limits the usefulness of theoretical analysis. It can, however, greatly assist in comparing cases, in identifying areas of risk and help in the investment decision process. Its major contribution to a mining project is that it imposes an investigative discipline that also assists in improving the quantitative approach to risk analysis and hence risk management. Risk analysis and risk management also requires sound common sense and major inputs from experienced geologists, mining, mechanical, electrical and mineral processing engineers. The Engineering Council, in 1992, issued a ten point code of professional practice entitled ‘Engineers and Risk Issues’ (The Engineering Council. 1992), covering our professional responsibilities, the law, our conduct, the need for a systematic approach to risk issues, the use of professional judgement, communications, risk management, evaluation of risk, our professional development in this field and the encouragement of public awareness of risk issues. This is a specific area of training perhaps long neglected by our industry and academic institutions (Atkinson. 1983).

"A four-inch compound water cyclone (CWC) was tested to evaluate its gold recovery characteristics when processing -4.8 mm run-or-pit, placer material. Neutron activated placer gold particles (840 to 37 microns) were used as radiotracers (/98Au) in a closed circuit ewe test loop to determine concentrator recovery; a procedure believed unique to this study. The effect on gold recovery of gold size and shape, feed pulp density, feed pressure, vortex finder clearance (VFC), ewe cone type, top-size of the feed solids, presence or absence of heavy minerals in the feed, and the quantity of-37 micron slimes in the feed was investigated in over 300 tests.CWC concentration ratio and the top-size of the underflow solids were both affected by cone type, VFC, and feed pressure. Gold recovery was significantly affected by gold size, gold shape, and concentration ratio. These effects are complex, because significant size-concentration ratio and size-shape interactions exist. Radiotracer techniques showed gold particles had a residence time within the ewe of approximately one second. This study suggests ewe gold recovery is a concentration. This work suggests ewe gold recovery is a function of particle size and shape, and the flow rate through the cyclone. CWC cone ""bed density"" is considered important only as a thin, protective layer, which shields coarser gold particles from the entraining currents and facilitates their movement through the CWC.IntroductionCompound water cyclones (CWC), or automedium cyclones, are enhanced gravity concentrators for the beneficiation for slurries of sand, coal, and ground ore (Fig. 1). They are called compound water cyclones because of the compound slopes of their basal cones (Fig. 2) and are operated to suppress classification phenomena in favour of gravity concentration effects. The compound water cyclone is not a new wet concentrator. It was developed in the late 1950s by Dr. Jan Visman through research sponsored by Canada's Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources. Since that time, it has become a common unit in coal washeries for cleaning fine coal. CWCs and other versions of concentrating cyclones have also shown promise for heavy minerals and precious metals recovery."

In order that the reader may not be misled, I feel it necessary to comment upon the title of this paper. "Laws of Rock Behavior," one may take as being part of the all-embracing "Law of Nature" and this, according to the Oxford Dictionary, relates to the principles of conduct recognized as being pleasing to God. I feel it would be presumptuous to erect a code of rock behavior on this basis, so turn to a secondary definition, namely that a "Law" is that which is intrinsically reasonable. It is extremely unlikely that any group of geologists, or workers in rock mechanics would be in complete agreement about what could be taken to be "intrinsically reasonable." Therefore, this paper does not present any deified utterances, but rather deals with a few aspects of rock behavior which I consider to be intrinsically reasonable and with which I hope the reader will concur. The mode of behavior of rocks in the Earth's crust covers the range from wholly brittle to completely ductile ; with a deformation time scale which may be measured in milliseconds, for some events such as meteoritic impact, or in millions of years for the tectonic deformation involved in mountain building. A complete survey is, of course, outside the scope of an introductory paper, so I must be both brief and selective in my treatment. Any attempt to establish the mode of rock behavior in the Earth's crust should take into account data and relationships established in laboratory experiments and correlate these with field evidence. Consequently, the first section of this paper presents a brief discussion of the experimental aspects of rock mechanics which are pertinent to the subsequent discussion.

When a company develops a mineral property in a remote area of Alaska, it must consider how best to house its personnel. This Bureau of Mines report examines the economics of two options: company towns and company camps. The price required to maintain a 15% discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) was derived for hypothetical 1,000-st/d cut-and-fill mines and 50,000-st/d open-pit mines located in three different regions of the State, One set of hypothetical mines utilizes a townsite; the other utilizes a relatively new concept, a fly-in camp or commuting operation, in which two shifts of employees operate the mine and all associated facilities for 1 week before being replaced by a second crew. The study shows that operating costs were higher for mines employing the commuting option than for mines having a company town because of the additional wages paid for overtime hours; however, the price required to obtain a 15% DCFROR for the single-product copper concentrate, f.0.b. the mill site, was significantly lower owing to the lower investment costs for the camp-type operation. The economic advantage for those mines utilizing the camp increases from south to north and from the coast toward the interior.

I. INTRODUCTION. REPEATED failures in attempts to work gold-bearing gravels by means of suction-dredges have created the impression that this method is impracticable. The suction-dredges have failed from three special causes excessive wear and frequent breakage of pump-shell, runners and liners; inability to dredge compact gravel which would ,not. readily move towards the intake; and, most important of all, closing. of the suction-pipe by stones too large to enter it. In my opinion, all three causes of trouble may be remedied: the first, by making stronger the parts most liable to wear and breakage; the second, by means for loosening the gravel at the intake; and the third, by sufficiently... Increasing.. the diameter of the suction-pipe. In suction gold-dredges, this diameter has not usually exceeded 10 or 12 in.; whereas there are few profitable gold-fields which can bee considered dredgeable, in which stones more than' 12 in. in diameter, are-.not frequently encountered. II. AN EFFECTIVE SUCTION-DREDGE. In harbor-operations, much larger stones are handled by suction-dredges.., The large dredge of the Henry Steers Contracting Co. worked for nearly four years at League Island, Philadelphia, where it sucked up, passed through the pump, and forced through 3,700 ft. of discharge-pipe; gravel containing boulders up to 200 lb. in weight. This was done with no bad breaks and few shut-downs. The cutter; and liners were the only parts liable to damage, and these were easily replaced with brief interruption of work. "Phytostabilisation with tolerant plant species has been advocated as a cost-effective solution for sustainable cover of tailings from metal mines and bauxite refinery. The development of sustainable plant ecosystems on such wastes requires not only tolerant plant species compatible with local climatic conditions, but also the formation of stable and functional root zones through systematic processes to develop functional soil matrix and horizons (eg A-B-C). However, the process requirements for reconstructing functional root zones in tailings are poorly understood. Based on a review of current literature and industry experience in tailings revegetation, the present paper conceptualises three key phases in the process of root zone development in amended tailings: hydro-geochemical stabilisation resulting from the interactions among tailings characteristics, amendment measures and local climatic conditions the rehabilitation of soil biological capacity the establishment of ecological (carbon and nutrient) linkages between the rehabilitated root zones and the above ground plant communities.Key research is required on: the relationship between hydro-geochemical stability and mineralogy and geochemistry of tailings, in response to rehabilitation treatments under local climatic conditions the relationship between soil biological capacity and hydro-geochemical stability in the root zone the transition of soil microbial communities specific to exogenous organic matters into those required for mineralising litters of in situ plant communities.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Edraki, M and Mulligan, D R, 2012. For over 40 years, Mufulira underground copper mine has been recording incidents of rockburst. Laboratory tests and numerical analyses were carried out to understand the rockburst mechanism at the Mufulira mine. Rockburst did not occur in the chain pillars or at the mining face, but mainly in the mining drives along diminishing pillars or ahead of the mining face. RQD suggested that the rock mass in the rockburst areas was relatively intact. Laboratory tests confirmed that the rock at Mufulira mine is very strong and brittle. Elastic stress analyses for the rockburst sites by 3D displacement discontinuity method (DDM) indicated very high stress in the chain pillars and low-stress concentration at the sites of rockburst during the initial mining stages. However, there was no apparent positive correlation between the elastically calculated normal stress values and the occurrences of rockbursts. The 2D elastic FEM analysis was conducted under the concentrated stress by DDM and indicated that some stress increase with face advance for the rockburst in the vicinity of the mining face. However, stress severity indicated almost no increase, and the rockbursts cannot be explained as an instantaneous rock mass failure due to stress increase by mining. Therefore, a creep damage model was proposed to clarify the mechanism of the rockbursts. Cumulative rock damage was evaluated for the edge elements of each sidewall of the mining drives, based on the normal stresses by 3D DDM. The rockburst occurrences were well hindcasted. A method to estimate the volume of the rockburst source was proposed, and a likely result was obtained.

The number of natural-gasoline plants has shown a consistent decline in recent years, but the total capacity has increased steadily. The number of completed plants, as determined by a survey as of January 1, 1932, amounted to 959. Previous surveys of January 1, 1928 and 1930 showed 1,155 and 1,035 plants, respectively. Of the total plants on January 1, 1932, 859 were operating and 100 were shut down, compared with 999 operating and 36 shut down on January 1, 1930. The material gain in the number of inoperative plants in the last two years was probably due to the severe decline in prices of 1931. The low prices of 1931, which were approximately 40 per cent below 1930, made it virtually impossible for the majority of the independent plants, or plants not owned by a large integrated company, to operate at a profit. Accordingly, the majority of the plants removed from the list in 1930 and 1931 were owned by companies which were engaged solely in the manufacture of natural gasoline. The total daily capacity of the plants on January 1, 1932, amounted to 11,387,000 gallons, an increase of 871,000 gallons, or 8 per cent, in the two years 1930 and 1931. That the total capacity of the plants has increased while the number of plants has declined is due to the fact that nearly all the plants constructed in the last five years have been large plants. During 1931 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was approximately 10,600,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 4,944,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1931 at 47 per cent of their capacity, compared with 58 per cent in 1930 and 61 per cent in 1929. Although more plants have been dismantled in Oklahoma in recent years than in any other State, it continues to rank first in number of plants. The potential benefits of implementing the Last Planner System (LPS) on mining infrastructure projects were explored through two case studies in the South African mining industry. The first part of the study involved measurement of the impact of LPS through earned value techniques on secondary project data. The second part sought to establish the lean construction success factors leading to improvements in construction performance. This was done by means of a research questionnaire distributed to the project owner’s teams, contracted parties, and the LPS facilitators. The results revealed a positive correlation between LPS application and planned percentage complete. However, the performance achieved during the LPS pilot was not sustained. The success factors and benefits considered most evident in the case study pilot differed among the three stakeholder groups. The findings are expected to guide construction stakeholders to better define performance measures and focus on factors required to make LPS implementation more effective in the South African mining sector.

During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.

In a systematic study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated seat designs in low- and mid-seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia. The purpose was to support, with additional data, earlier findings that NIOSH ergonomic seat designs (featuring viscoelastic foam padding and lower-back support) may help reduce health risks to operators of coal mine shuttle cars. Eight shuttle car operators evaluated seven seat designs (one already in use in each vehicle and five NIOSH designs) relative to perceived and measured whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure (including vehicle jarring/jolting) and discomfort. Operators’ perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaire ratings were compared with International Standards Organization (ISO) 2631-1:1985 fatigue-decreased proficiency (FDP) limits and measured WBV levels on low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Objective and subjective data results indicated that NIOSH seat designs (with added adjustability, lower-back support and improved seat padding) performed better to reduce vehicle jarring/jolting levels and that shuttle car operators favored them over existing seat designs. The NIOSH low- and mid-seam shuttle car seats showed 45 to 77 percent better performance in FDP and 9 to 60 percent better performance overall in operators’ ratings. Considering the VAS results for low- and mid-seam shuttle cars under no-load conditions, operators rated the level of jarring/jolting 18 to 89 percent lower with the NIOSH seats. Reductions in measured vehicle jarring/jolting were 19 to 46 percent for the three-directional vector sum accelerations relative to the existing seats on the low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators for both shuttle car models rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable overall. Vehicle operators most frequently suggested adding armrests to improve the seats on the mid-seam shuttle car. A suggested improvement for the low-seam shuttle car was to make the seat a better fit for the operator compartment, which would enhance clearance between the operator and vehicle controls and allow for better seat adjustment and operator visibility.

Copper concentrates are widely used in smelting operations worldwide and typically consist of chalcopyrite ( CuFeS2) as the primary mineral, with chalcocite ( Cu2S) and bornite ( Cu5FeS4) as secondary copper-bearing minerals. However, these concentrates often contain hazardous impurities, such as the fluorine ion, which can result in various complications during the smelting process. These issues include equipment corrosion, gas treatment requirements, environmental hazards, and strained community relations. Furthermore, high fluorine content in copper concentrates can lead to penalties and limitations during sales. To address these challenges, this comprehensive review assesses current techniques for removing fluorine from copper concentrate. Drawing upon recent research and the findings in the field, the review analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of existing fluorine removal methods and identifies critical issues requiring attention in the future. This review provides valuable insights into the current state of fluorine removal from copper concentrates and serves as a practical guide for researchers and industry professionals in this field.

Pyrite is the most common among the group of sulfide minerals in the Earth and abundant in most geological settings. This gangue mineral in association with garnet, hematite, magnetite, and other sulfide minerals acts as an indicator mineral in the Kubi concession of the Asante Gold corporation in Ghana. X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to investigate the crystal structure, identify individual elements, permanence, transformation, and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite. The study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of the ore deposit. XRD shows that pristine and annealed samples contain some hematite and quartz besides pyrite. Results from air annealing indicate that the relationship between pyrite and hematite-magnetite is controlled by temperature. EDX reveals that the sample has O and C as contaminants, while XPS in addition reveals Ba, Au, P, Al, and N. These elements are attributed to pyrite that bonds metallically or covalently to neighboring ligands/impurity minerals such as oxides, chalcogenide sulfides, as well as the gangue alteration minerals of magnetite and hematite in the pyrite sample. These findings suggest that during the hydrothermal flow regime, pyrite, pathfinder elements, and impurity minerals/metals were in contact with quartz minerals before undergoing hematite transformation, which thus becomes an indicator mineral in the Kubi gold concession.

Soil CO2 flux serves a critical indicator of ecosystem function and carbon cycling in disturbed landscapes. This study measured and quantified temporal patterns and environmental drivers of soil respiration across fifteen revegetated treatment plots over a 12-week period (July-October 2025). Utilizing automated CO2 flux measurements, we investigated differences between treatments and quantified their relationships with soil temperature, moisture, and atmospheric pressure. One-way ANOVA revealed significant treatment effects on CO2 flux (F4, 442 =14.1, p < 0.001, η2=0.113), with amended plots exhibiting 40–50% higher mean fluxes than control plots. Weekly temporal analysis demonstrated distinct temporal patterns, with peak fluxes registering in mid-August before a gradual decline. Multiple regression analyses showed that soil temperature (β=0.043, p < 0.001) and moisture (β=2.31, p < 0.001) are the primary flux drivers, together accounting for 18.2% of total variability (adjusted R2=0.182). Atmospheric pressure had a moderate effect (β=1.13, p < 0.001), detectable only in multivariable analysis. Variance partitioning indicated that environmental factors explained more variability (18.7%) than treatment effect (10.5%), with approximately 71% of flux variability attributed to finer spatial or temporal variability. These results demonstrate that revegetation amendments enhance soil biological activity and impact geochemical cycling, and that temperature and moisture are dominant controls on respiration dynamics in reclaimed mine soils. The findings provide quantifiable benchmarks for ecosystem recovery through altering soil biology and geochemistry and for quantifying carbon sequestration potential in post-mining landscapes.

This paper reviews the existing and state of art knowledge for electronic waste (e-waste) recycling. Electrical/electronic equipments (EEEs) which are unwanted, broken or discarded by their original users are known as e-waste. The main purpose of this study is to provide a review of e-waste problem, give e-waste management strategies and introduce various physical e-waste recycling processes with special attention towards extraction of both metallic values and nonmetallic substances. The hazards arise from the presence of heavy metals (e.g. Hg, Cd, Pb etc.), brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and other potentially harmful substances in e-waste. Due to the presence of these substances, e-waste is generally considered as hazardous waste and may pose significant human and environmental health risks if improperly managed. This review paper describes the potential hazards and economic opportunities of e-waste. First of all, an overview of e-waste/printed circuit board (PCB) components and substances are given. Current status and future perspectives of e-waste and waste PCB recycling techniques are described. E-waste characterization, dismantling, liberation, classification and separation processes, are also covered. Manual selective dismantling after desoldering and metal-nonmetal liberation at −150 μm with two step crushing are seen to be the best techniques. After size reduction, mainly physical separation processes employing gravity, electrostatic, magnetic separators etc., which are commonly used in mineral processing, have been critically reviewed here for separation of metals and nonmetals. The recovery of pure metals from e-waste after physical separation can be performed by pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical or biohydro metallurgical routes, which are not covered here. Suitable PCB recycling flowsheets for industrial applications are also given. E-waste recycling will be a very important sector in the near future from economic and environmental perspectives for both developing and developed countries. Recycling technology aims to take today’s waste and turn it into conflict-free, sustainable polymetallic secondary resources (i.e. Urban Mining) for tomorrow. Recycling technology must ensure that e-waste is processed in an environmentally friendly manner, with high metal/nonmetal recovery efficiency a lowered carbon footprint. Taking into consideration our depleting natural resources, this Urban Mining approach offers quite a few benefits; it provides a substantial secondary resource, while also ensuring that the environment is kept free from harmful toxins in e-waste. This results in increased energy efficiency and lowers demand for mining of new raw materials.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published 1942-45 as a series of seven miners&apos; circulars (Nos. 51-57). The course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners&apos; circulars on accident prevention at metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners&apos; Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.
