The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. Oaky Creek Coal (OCC) has embarked on an ambitious program to fast track the introduction of Trench Mining into its current mining operations. The project has the capacity to allow the extraction of reserves at stripping ratios, uneconomical by conventional mining methods.Trench mining using Continuous Highwall Mining (CHM) technology reduces the in-situ stripping ratio to 4:3; compared with a stripping ratio of 20:1 using conventional mining techniques.

The tunnelling work to construct a sewage trunk line designed by the Sewage Bureau of Kobe City along north side slope of Rokko mountain range incorporated an all ground condition type (broad spectrum) TBM with slurry transport system with jet pump manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Boring dia. of the tunnel measured to 2.0 m. The construction planning and implemen- tation were done by Ohbayashi Corporation, the general contractor. The heading way was 3342.4 m in overall length.; construction work ran from April '84 to June '85. The max. daily progress marked 31.9 m and the max. monthly progress 493.1 m according to the relevant record. The machine proceeded with the work under geological conditions featured with conglomerate, rhyolite, tuff breccia and slate, whereby soft soil zone mostly of clay was encountered in a limited area. In the latter case, however, steel segments were substituted for supporting steel ribs. The tunnel was routed beneath a meandering road with the result that more than 40% of overall length show a curvature of 50 to 200 m radius.

Reprocessing Queensland’s historical copper tailings for critical minerals is an opportunity to circularise the state’s mining industry by converting waste liabilities into assets. Mine waste valorisation enables economic rehabilitation of legacy mining sites, improves environmental outcomes, and can establish a secondary resources sector that produces a sustainable supply of critical minerals to supplement growing global demands (Australian Government, 2023). The North-West Queensland Minerals Province (NWQMP) hosts numerous copper mines with known cobalt mineralisation (Degeling, 2020). Cobalt is a critical metal essential for green energy and battery technologies, however its global supply is at risk due to geopolitical and ethical concerns (Rachidi et al, 2021). Historically mining in the NWQMP has focused on copper, leaving cobalt to theoretically accumulate in the mine waste. First-pass geometallurgical characterisation of waste repositories by the Sustainable Minerals Institute identified Capricorn Copper as a key site for further investigation into cobalt deportment and recovery potential.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927 - 1928 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr F G Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgoorlie mine, and Mr Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preserved from the Kalgoorlie mine by Mr A E Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection of MrS F C Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and 'weissite', muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

The Bastnäs-type magnetite-skarn-hosted rare earth element (REE) mineralisations are located in the Palaeoproterozoic Bergslagen ore province, central Sweden, and occur along a ca 100 km long belt of 1.90–1.87 Ga metavolcanosedimentary rocks. Ten different Bastnäs-type deposits have been sampled in order to assess the origin of ore-forming fluids in these systems. Magnetite and quartz have d18O values ranging from -2.3 to +1.1‰ and +7.2 to +8.3‰ respectively. Mineralised carbonates have d18O values between +5.8 and +7.2‰ and d13C values between -5.4 and -3.3‰. Temperature calculations based on the O-isotope composition of mineral pairs, combined with available fluid inclusion data, suggest primary mineralisation at ca 650–400°C. For these temperatures, calculated equilibrium fluids have d18O values that range from those typical of magmatic fluids (+6 to +8‰) to lower values (down to +3‰). Variation in carbonate O and C isotope data are consistent with interaction between local Palaeoproterozoic carbonate rocks (d18O = +12.5 to +19.6‰ and d13C = -1.8 to +1.7‰) and fluids of a magmatic origin. It is suggested that the Bastnäs-type REE-magnetite mineralisations formed as a result of reactions between local carbonate units and high-temperature, magmatic-dominated hydrothermal fluids during 1.90–1.87 Ga (Svecofennian) syn-volcanic activity.CITATION:Sahlström, F, Jonsson, E, Högdahl, K, Harris, C, Troll, V R and Jolis, E M, 2015. In the process of primary copper smelting in flash smelting furnace (FSF), the ratio of iron to silica (Fe/SiO2 mass ratio) primarily determines the slag viscosity and magnetite formation. Viscous slag does not only cause difficulties in daily operation, such as in tapping, it also increases the copper losses to slag. Thus, keeping the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio at the desired level is an important aspect of FSF and slag cleaning furnace (SCF) operation. In this study, the improvement of the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was conducted in two steps: First, the optimal Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was derived based on thermodynamic data. Based on this analysis, appropriate control limits were determined. Second, this range of favourable Fe/SiO2 mass ratios was implemented into operation by an advice-based control system, which suggests the addition of silica based on the analysis of SCF slag. As this approach was successful, the same advice-based control system principle was adapted for the coke addition to the SCF. After testing the new advice-based control for several months, the production data confirm the predictions by thermodynamics: since the prediction was implemented as an advisor, the copper and magnetite content in SCF slag is significantly reduced and viscous slag is reported less often by operations.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. The presence of rock joints has a huge impact on the strength, deformability, and permeability of fractured rock masses by providing surfaces of weakness on which further deformation are more prone to occur, and by serving as the major channels of water flow due to low matrix permeability. In earlier studies, water flow-through rock joints is often assumed as laminar flow between two ideal smooth parallel plates, and the well-known cubic law was derived and widely used to characterise the hydraulic behaviour of rock joints. However, natural rock fractures are irregular and of spatially varied aperture. Thus, the concept of equivalent hydraulic aperture was introduced to modify the cubic law. Numerous works have been conducted on the relation between hydraulic aperture and mechanical aperture incorporating various geometrical parameters. The surface roughness is one of the most sensitive factors for water flow-through rock joints. The aperture distributions are irregular in natural roughed fractures relative to the parallel plates. Barton et al (1985) and Olsson and Barton (2001) incorporated the joint roughness coefficient JRC in evaluating hydraulic aperture and proposed an empirical equation based on fluid flow tests. However, their equations do not conform to the dimensional consistency. Many other researchers (Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Xiong et al, 2011; Li et al, 2019) considered aperture distributions in their equations. But the aperture distributions change during shear was always neglected. The contact of rock joints also has a significant impact on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of rock joint, since fluid tends to flow-through a rough joint along connected channels while bypassing the contact obstacles with tortuosity. Nonetheless, previous research mostly considered joint roughness or aperture changes based on 2D joint profiles, while the contact and tortuosity based on 3D surfaces were often overlooked. Only a few works have been made on quantifying the effect of contact area on flow behaviour (Walsh, 1981; Zimmerman et al, 1992; Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Yeo, 2001), and mostly ignored contact area change induced by shearing and the associated impact on flow behaviour. Summarily, the quantification of fracture geometry effects on water flow in single rock joints still needs further investigation, especially when considering coupled shear-flow processes. This paper, therefore, aims to study the impacts of contact area and aperture distributions of the single rock joint on the flow behaviour. The evolutions of contact area and aperture distributions induced by shear are considered. Then, an improved model for estimating the hydraulic aperture with the mechanical aperture incorporating the above factors is developed. Finally, a series of shear and shear-flow tests are conducted on artificial joint samples and the model performance is verified by comparing against the results of experimental tests.

The mining industry is currently focusing to develop and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that can efficiently recover valuable minerals from their natural state. However, a limited number of research can be seen on the design and synthesis of polymeric flotation collectors. The focal objective of this research is to synthesise a more effective polymeric collector with advanced architecture to utilise in the mineral processing industry. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) co-polymers with cardanol derivatives have the potential to selectively trap valuable metals in the flotation process in a more efficient way. Cardanol exhibits amenability to chemical modification for making tailor-made monomers that can further produce polymers with high value. The synthesis of a series of fit for purpose copolymers in this study was accomplished by RAFT polymerisation. The ability to design complex architecture is a significant advantage in engineering polymeric collectors by RAFT polymerisation. Initially, commercially available cardanol was converted to a cardanol based monomer and copolymerised with commercially available monomers to synthesise a series of novel cardanol based copolymers with predetermined molecular weights. The side groups of the copolymer were chemically modified to incorporate functionality that can be selectively adsorbed on the chalcopyrite surface.

The Mount Kasi gold deposit in Vanua Levu represents an epithermal, high sulphur, gold-enargite system occurring within a volcanic caldera of Middle to Upper Miocene age. High level breccia pipes flare upward and form flat lying, near surface, mushroom shaped sheets parallel and near to the present land surface. The upper portions of the pipes contain explosion breccias which are capped by sandy siliceous sinter-like beds and are cut by alunite veins. Outlying intercalated scoriasceous lavas and breccia sheets show evidence of subsidence within a shallow basin. Detailed mapping of breccia types, intensity of silicification and the presence of multiple quartz veining and enargite abundance outlined blocks of more consistent gold mineralization within the breccias. This work has provided a model for mineralization which will aid future exploration and ore reserve estimations. A significant eluvial concentration of gold occurs in soils overlying the breccia sheet.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). Single wavelength fluorescence sensing has been used in the preconcentration of ores for many years in situations where it is typically specific to the mineral of interest. Examples of fluorescence sensing include the sorting of diamonds in diamond mines and the sorting of scheelite in tungsten ores. However, the number of minerals that show useful single wavelength fluorescence properties in the visible spectrum is relatively small, so the application of fluorescence sensing is currently limited to niche application in the minerals industry. Recent developments at the University of Adelaide have focussed upon extending fluorescence signal measurements into the infrared spectrum, as well as investigating multi-wavelength fluorescence known as up-conversion fluorescence. These techniques may not only significantly increase the number of minerals that exhibit fluorescence properties suitable for both identification and sensor-based sorting, but also provide mineral-specific signatures of higher quality than previously attainable. This paper details the research work carried out by the University of Adelaide and funded by CRC ORE to develop a mineral-specific fluorescence sensor. The sensor targets two fluorine bearing minerals, fluorite and fluorapatite, that are common in many base metal ores such as porphyry copper ores and silver/lead/zinc ores. Fluorine is a known penalty element in mineral products derived from these ores, so mining companies need to monitor and control the amount of fluorine in their final product to keep it below commercially agreed specifications. Currently there is no real time sensor capable of monitoring fluorine in the ore feed so monitoring and control is carried out using time-consuming standard sampling and off-line laboratory measurements. The development and application of a real time fluorine sensor will enable the mining companies to monitor and control fluorine levels in the plant, greatly reducing the time and cost associated with producing their mineral concentrates within the prescribed specifications.

The Victoria Park Tunnel project is an inner-city alliance project in central Auckland, New Zealand. The existing two-directional viaduct will be modified to single-direction flow, and a new northbound 440 m cut and cover tunnel will be constructed beneath Victoria Park. Three-dimensional (3D) visualisation media were used to communicate key design innovations to stakeholders and the general public. The 3D visual material has proven a useful tool for informing motorists of a new safety barrier method adopted for traffic management.This presentation will explain how 3D visualisation was incorporated in the project and will showcase the 3D visualisation media created for the project.

Resue or split face firing has the potential to separate ore and waste rock into separate muck piles within a stope. Thus split face firing has the potential to reduce dilution of the ore stream to be transported to the surface for subsequent processing. It also potentially reduces the total amount of broken rock needing to be transported out of the mine as the waste material is physically separated from the ore as part of the blasting process. Waste can therefore be used directly from the stope to backfi ll other mining areas. This paper reports on the results of split face firing trials at the Hillgrove mine in NSW and analyses the results of these blasts.

There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. These sensors allow measurement of detonation pressure, average VOD, propagation time and magnitude of the pressure induced in the explosive column by detonation of adjacent blastholes.CITATION:Cavanough, G, Torrance, A C, Rock, J and Olsson, A, 2015. Borehole breakout is a drilling induced phenomenon caused by overstress of rock around the borehole. Its depth usually aligns with the minimum horizontal principal stress direction. For this reason, it has been used to determine stress orientations and a series of researchers also argued its dimensions can be indicative of stress magnitudes. If the stress dependencies of breakout geometries are well understood, it is possible to estimate stress magnitudes based on these data. This paper investigates the influences of critical parameters on breakout dimensions, including absolute stress magnitudes, stress ratios and borehole diameter. Several experiments have been conducted on cubic (120 x 120 x 120 mm3) sandstone samples with pre-drilled holes (22 mm and 30 mm) under true tri-axial loading conditions using UNSW self-designed equipment. Experimental results confirm the increasing maximum horizontal principal stress magnitudes result in larger angular span and longer breakout depth at constant minimum horizontal and vertical principal stresses. There is also a considerable discrepancy observed between experimental results and the analytical model. Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. Hillgrove, situated on the New England plateau of New South Wales, is an area rich in history and resources. Key resources are predominantly antimony, gold and scheelite and the area surrounding the historical field is environmentally sensitive and topographically challenging. Since acquiring the Hillgrove leases, Straits Hillgrove Gold has undertaken a significant exploration program on these historical mining areas with the goal to return the field to production. This exploration program has enabled Straits to significantly increase the resource base and has subsequently enabled the planned redevelopment of Hillgrove to be realised. In October 2006, installation of mining infrastructure and the initial stripping of existing development had commenced. To successfully redevelop Hillgrove, Straits has had to adopt a highly mechanised, trackless, diesel mining operation which will see the production rate commence at an initial rate of 250 kt/a of ore from a narrow vein environment. This ore will be processed on site to produce antimony metal, gold bullion and a scheelite concentrate.
