Discussion of the paper of EDGAR L. NEWHOUSE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin: No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1801 to. 1806. G. C. RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. An ever-increasing demand for beryllium and beryllium alloys has directed attention to the milling of low-grade domestic deposits as a possible means of supplying part of the Nation's ore requirements. The United States generally produces less than 10 percent of its annual supply. For example, new supply in 1953 was estimated at about 9,250 tons, of which the United States imported 8,500 tons. Domestic production was only 750 tons.2/ Since record high prices for beryl in 1952 and 1953 did not greatly increase domestic product ion, the United States must develop mechanical beneficiation processes to use low-grade deposits and reduce dependence on foreign sources

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

THERE are two mechanisms by which secondary crystals can develop in bcc alloys, namely 1) impurity inhibition and 2) strip-thickness inhibition. This paper reports some studies of each mechanism; the alloys were Si-Fe, A1-Fe, Cr-Fe, Mo-Fe, and Ge-Fe, as well as iron itself. All the alloys, which were of interest as part of a program of work on soft magnetic materials, were made by a powder-metallurgy process, using carbonyl iron (Grade MCP) as the starting material. Earlier phases of the work have already been published. Work described previously1 shows how the oxygen content of the sintering. atmosphere can be used to produce silica in the material which acts as a grain-growth inhibitor. Since then it has been found more convenient to make use of the oxide in the iron powder to control the silica content of the material. The compacts are sintered in vacuum which allows a direct reaction to take place between the iron oxide and the silicon. Details are given elsewhere.4 By this method, and by suitable adjustment of the rolling schedule, material with cube-on-edge secondary crystals has been produced in thicknesses from 0.1 to 0.001 in. in iron containing from 2-1/2 to 4-1/2 pct Si. It was also found possible to process 6-1/2 pct Si-Fe to 0.001 in. This was achieved by refinement of the sintered-compact grain size by using fine-particle silicon (i.e., <200 mesh). The brittleness of the material necessitated hot rolling to 0.020 in., from which thickness cold rolling was possible. If the conditions of sintering and the cold-rolling schedule were correct (i.e., as given elsewhere4 for 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe) secondary crystals of (110) [001.] orientation could be developed. An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

[The purpose of the study is to investigate cases of subsidence over abandoned mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh Coal identified from published and unpublished sources and to determine through a consideration of the geology, topography, climate, mining activity, and evidence at ground surface, what mechanisms control subsidence .and under what circumstances it takes place. The study wan performed it two phases, the first to identify all documented incidents of subsidence in mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh coal Region; and the second, to study a particular portion of the region in detail, collecting pertinent data relative to the sites within, characterizing roil the nature of the subsidence and its economic consequences, and determining the applicability of the findings to other areas whore similar problems with the collapse of abandoned miner have been encountered.]

The microstructural stability of 59 carbon and low alloy steels after 34,000 hr exposure at 900&apos; and 1050°F, including the weld heat-affected zone, is discussed. The tensile and creep rupture properties of the parent metal of many of the steels before and after 10,000 hr exposure are presented. SEAMLESS pipe has been used for many years at elevated temperatures. When seamless first began to be used, operating temperatures and pressures were relatively low and the steel produced adequately met the existing requirements. The need for knowledge of creep properties and graphitiza-tion was nonexistent. Today the requirements for tubular products have changed considerably. Operating temperatures and pressures are increasing continually and corrosion, particularly at high temperatures, presents a problem. Carbon steels have, under these conditions, certain economic advantages particularly in oil refinery use. However, the use of low alloy steels in the generation of steam power has increased appreciably due to the influence of molybdenum on creep strength and the control of graphitization with chromium. The behavior of carbon and certain low alloy steels after long periods of exposure at 900° and 1050°F (480° and 565°C) has been investigated. The steels were examined before and after 10,000 to 34,000 hr exposure. Results obtained with material exposed at 1200°F (650°C) are not presented due to the severe oxidation and resulting decarburiza-tion after long periods of exposure. The graphitization characteristics of carbon and low alloy steels are of fundamental concern to the users of these materials. This is particularly true where welded joints are employed. In order to evaluate properly the behavior of steels at elevated temperatures, it is desirable to employ not only long periods of exposure under controlled conditions, but to use material with known properties and steelmaking practices. The purpose of this investigation has been to study the microstructure of the weld and the tensile and creep rupture properties of the parent metal after long periods of exposure at elevated temperatures. In the report&apos;.&apos; of a previous investigation data were presented on the microstructure, impact strength, hardness, and oxidation characteristics after 10,000 hr exposure at elevated temperatures. When this investigation was planned, methods for controlling the graphitization characteristics of steel were not established and, therefore, a number of special alloy steels were included in the study. During the exposure of these steels, the influence of aluminum in accelerating the rate of graphitization and the inhibiting power of chromium were established by various investigators. Also, the vanadium-bearing steels, because of their outstanding creep properties, received attention. As a result of these developments, considerable progress has been made in the field of high temperature tubular products, and the necessity for special alloys to prevent graph-itization has been restricted largely to the use of chromium. Material Chemical analysis, deoxidation treatment, and austenitic grain size of the 59 steels discussed in this paper are shown in Table I. The steels were forged to 1x1 in. bars with the exception of steels 12B, 12DX, 12DY, 12DZ, 70, 70A, 72 to 78, 82, and 83 which were machined from heavy wall pipe. This study relates to continuous face haulage systems in underground coal mines, and was performed by Joy Manufacturing Company for the U. S. Bureau of Mines under the Bureau of Mines Contract No. HO 242025. The effective starting date for this work was June 14, 1974. There were two main reasons for making this study, the first being to find a safer system to move coal away from the face than the currently predominant shuttle car system, and the second being to seek ways to advance the state-of-the-art of continuous face haulage as a means of increasing coal production.

The effect of flotation operational parameters on froth stability and froth recovery was studied. Froth stability was measured using a special column. To determine the froth recovery, the froth height change model and froth height exponential model were used. It was found that since the interactions between the pulp and froth zones affect the time of froth formation, the exponential model is more suitable than the froth height change method for determining the froth recovery. The results showed that superficial air velocity and collector dosage have, respectively, the highest and lowest effect on the froth recovery, while froth recovery decreases sharply with increasing froth height.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes&apos;were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at the intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from the deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along the margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

This paper deals with work that has been carried on for over three years by the management and staff of the North Butte Mining Co. in an effort to standardize mining methods, to eliminate lost motion in the operating organization, and to improve the efficiency of the individual workman. Naturally, much of this work is an adaptation of ideas suggested by other mining operations or by practice in manufacturing and other productive industries. The studies, however, have developed some features that it is believed are new. Both new and adapted features are given in detail. The normal capacity of the North Butte mines is about 2000 tons per day. Hoisting is done principally through the Granite Mountain shaft, which is 3740 ft. (1140 m.) deep and equipped with an electric hoist capable of hoisting 200 tons per hour from a depth of 4000 ft. (1219 m.). The lowest stoping level is the 3400-ft. The Granite Mountain shaft is connected with the Speculator shaft, about 850 ft. (259 m.) south, and with the Gem, about 1150 ft. (350 m.) east, which are 3000 (914.4 m.) and 2000 ft. (609.6 m.) deep, respectively. These two shafts are equipped with reversible fans for ventilation. The Speculator has a steam hoist with a capacity of 150 tons per hour from the 3000-ft. level. The Granite Mountain shaft is concrete lined from the 1600-ft. to below the 3000-ft. level and gunited with cement from the 1600-ft. level to the surface. Sections of the Speculator shaft with a total combined length of 500 ft. (152.4 m.) are also concreted. There are approximately 36 miles (58 km.) of drifts and crosscuts in the mine, in which there are 15.2 miles (24.5 km.) of track. At normal capacity, about 75 stoping faces, 20 raises, and 30 sill development faces are working. Stoping is usually by the standard square-set method. Coal is the basic necessity of our present-day civilization, and those engaged in the industry, whether miner, day-man, pit boss, tipple boss, superintendent, salesman or operator, have a direct responsibility to the public at large. Our country is blessed with a great supply of Bituminous coal, upon which it must largely depend for its industrial prosperity. Anthracite coal, in its relation to our economic situation, is a small factor, as its ratio of production to Bituminous coal is only about one-sixth. However, within the last ten years, electricity and oil have largely displaced the use of coal in industry, so that the use of Bituminous coal is decreasing, relatively, and the potential production of Bituminous coal has largely increased since the war. High wage scales and high freight rates make the delivered price of coal to the consumer so out of proportion to the cost of electricity and oil -and strikes make the supply of coal so uncertain-that industry is rapidly turning to electricity and oil. The energy in a ton of coal can be transported, by electric current, a distance of 250 miles for 78% of what it costs to ship the coal in bulk, by rail, in the East-and, for about 60% of what it costs in our section of the country. The use of fuel oil, distillate and gasoline, in industry, has increased by leaps and bounds. Especially was this noticeable during the strike this year, as the large packing plants in Kansas City, Omaha and Sioux City (that formerly used nothing but coal) are now practically all using oil. This also supplies to other industrial plants throughout our territory in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Many railroads are using oil, as are also the smelters, cement plants, etc., etc. Ten years ago, 100% of the threshing in the state of Kansas was done with coal-today not over 25% of it is done through that means-and so it goes all along the line. The use of our coal is being yearly more restricted in industry. In the case of domestic consumption, the circle is also ever decreasing.&apos; In small towns and on farms, kerosene, gasoline and wood are largely utilized for cooking. For the past four years, along any country road, it is a common occurrence to hear a buzz-saw cutting old fence posts or timbers taken from creek bottoms. Many thousands of tons of coal are displaced each year through the use of corn and cobs. In larger towns, gas plants have been installed, and many housewives use gas-in communities contiguous to natural gas, that is used for industrial and domestic purposes. The time has gone when industrial and domestic consumers or dealers are satisfied to buy anything that is black-competition among the coal-producing states is keen, and will become more so. Eastern and southern fields are turning out splendidly prepared coals of high quality, and with their lower freight rates to competitive territory, will entirely nullify the use. of our Western coal unless-

Sulphuric acid leaching has been up to the present, the most popular of the leaching routes. Oxide ores are usually leached with sulphuric acid directly by dump leaching, as practiced at the Bagdad or Bluebird Mines in Arizona, or by vat leaching as done at Inspiration Mining in Arizona. Upgrading of the low-grade oxide ores by dump leaching followed by cementation of the copper from solution by scrap iron has been replaced by the leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning route which results in a high purity product at the mill site at reduced production costs compared to previous practice. High-grade oxide ores, vat leached with H2SO4, can contain, for example, 25 g Cu/l and 25 g H2S04/,l, or higher concentrations of both, and are presently fed directly to electrorefining plants. Advantages of coupling solvent extraction-electrowinning with the low cost dump leaching instead of using cementation, are as follows (1): a) the production of high purity electrolytic copper rather than cement copper;

Cubic ZnSe crystals have been grown with HCl, HBr, and I, as chemical transport reagents. The growth of large, well faceted crystals is in the order HCl < HBr < I, with some produced by I, transport being 1 cm on an edge. ZnSe:I crystals showed no strain in cross polarized light and were homogeneous as determined by electron microprobe. These ZnSe:I crystals had a mobility at 25°C of about 300 sq cm per v-sec and contained 103 dislocations per sq cm; further, these crystals were pure cubic and showed both photolumi-nescence and photo conductance. Doping was attempted during crystal growth. ZnS and Zn (S,Se) crystals were also grown by I, transport. ZnSe crystals have been grown by most of the common techniques.1"6 Of these, chemical vapor transport as developed by Kaldis2 showed promise of producing high perfection, cubic ZnSe. With chemical transport, crystals can be grown far below the transition temperature for conversion of cubic to hexagonal structure. A small temperature gradient between source and growth region tends to allow near equilibrium growth, which should lead to good crystalline perfection. Because it is necessary to form volatile compounds, halogens or their compounds are extensively used as transport agents. HCl, HBr, and I, were compared as transport agents for growth of ZnSe crystals. Doping during crystal growth was attempted. ZnS and ZnSxSe1-x crystals were also grown by chemical transport. Electrical and optical properties of the crystals were examined. EXPERIMENTAL Fig. 1 is a sketch of the growth apparatus, which was a modification of Kaldis&apos;. A quartz rod which butted against the seed crystal served as a heat sink to promote growth only on the seed. Initially, crystal growth was attempted with ZnSe prepared by wet chemical methods. Because such a material contained oxides and selenates, HC1 reacted with these oxygen compounds to form H2O and no ZnSe transport occurred. Further, this ZnSe contained about 10 ppm Cu plus other impurities. High purity ZnSe, containing small amounts or no oxygen compounds, was prepared by reaction of H2Se with zinc vapors at 600° to 800°C in an atmosphere of palladium diffused H2.7 The ZnSe thus produced was usually copper free and contained only 1 ppm by weight of magnesium as determined by emission spectrographic analysis. G.E.&apos;s electronic grade ZnS, which had about 10 ppm metallic impurities, was used without further treatment. ZnS-ZnSe charges were prepared by mixing the two compounds together, then sintering 24 hr at 1100°C in an H2S ambient. The gases, HBr and HC1, were commercial grade, of 99.9 pct purity, while the I2 was 99.999 pct pure. The single crystal seeds with (111) faces for growth were mechanically held in place by sealing the outer quartz tube to the growth tube. After the charge was introduced, the system was outgassed at l0-5 torr while heated to 500°C. The desired quantities of transport reagents were then sealed off in the system, which had been cooled to 25°C. The growth tubes were inserted into a furnace with the desired temperature and thermal gradient. The system was allowed to cool for 1 to 12 hr from growth temperatures of about 850" to 25°C. THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.: (1) The Sullivan Concentrator, Chapman Camp, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the, St. Eugene Concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the. Tadanac (Customs) Concentrator,Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Values in all ores treated are as minerals of some or all of the metals -lead, zinc, gold or silver. Occasional customs ores contain small amounts of copper. Gangue minerals vary considerably. A few customs ores are somewhat oxidized and as a result present difficulties. Flotation equipment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sullivan Concentrator. In this paper I will not detail treatment nor equipment in any of our plants but will describe special features in, or in connection with, all of them. I will then deal with flotation reagents, describing our use of each of them, particularly where differing from general practice. I will conclude with comments on special subjects related to differential-flotation.

The Hunter Valley Rail Project (HVRP) represents most of the coal producers using the Hunter Valley Rail System in NSW to haul coal to the port of Newcastle. This system carries over 70 per cent of NSW&apos;s coal exports, comprising over 30 per cent of total Australian coal exports. Hunter Valley coal is the largest export industry in NSW, and one of its largest export growth opportunities. However, the industry is under intense pressure in international markets from existing and new coal producers and from other energy sources. Whilst potential growth in demand is substantial, particularly for thermal coal in Asia, excess world supply has pushed prices down, and this underlying trend may well continue. The industry has lost international competitiveness and as a result, investment has dropped 44 per cent over the last two years. The industry must be rapidly structured to compete and attract investment on the basis that these pressures will continue. Substantial productivity improvement and cost reductions must be made for the industry to regain competitiveness, otherwise growth will not occur and the industry will decline, with serious implications for the Australian and NSW communities. The introduction of internationally competitive rail freight rates is an urgent and essential part of this process. It is the key objective of the HVRP.
