The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

FMC built its first angle bolter in 1969. This was a single mast unit which could drill holes for conventional bolts or angle holes for installing roof trusses. From this drill we learned very quickie that the mast design was an important factor to the success or failure of any angle bolter. The first mast installed on this machine (EXHIBIT 1) was fixed in length with endless chain and hydraulic motor feed. It took less than a shift underground to determine that the fixed length was not going to work. The undulating top created conditions where the mast was too long to be positioned at a 450 angle. Several mast designs were tried and discarded before we felt we had the answer to our problems. (EXHIBIT 2} We developed a mast that would extend or retract without moving the position of the drill unit. This allowed the operator to "wedge" the mast between the floor and roof before starting his drill feed. This arrangement worked exceptionally well, but unfortunately the demand, as perceived by our Sales Department, for angle bolters did not materialize. This unit became an "orphan" and was used by many coal mines until it died a natural death. FMC did not decide to re-enter this market again until 1979. At this time many coal producers were contacted to determine what features should he incorporated into a dual mast angle bolter. From this information we were able to arrive at three main areas of concern that we should consider when designing a new machine. 1. Eliminate overturning moment on drill unit. 2. Provide some sort of steel support near roof line to aid in starting a 15° hole. 3. Dual mast units need a method of raising center of mast rotation to facilitate various mining heights and still maintain a 45° angle and proper distance from rib. I would now like to discuss each of these individually. EXHIBIT 3 indicates the overturning moment resulting from the feed cylinder thrust and the reaction of the drill hit against the roof. To eliminate this moment a mast was designed using two feed cylinders mounted in the plane of the drill center line, thus removing all overturning moments on the drill unit carriage. This mast has been used extensively in vertical drilling with no downtime attributed to wear on mast guides and drill unit supports. The cylinders are designed to provide uniform thrust and feed speed throughout the total stroke. For manufacturing and economic reasons, the final mast design on the first drill was not used for this new drill. A drill steel support mounted on the mast, and positioned by a hydraulic cylinder provides the needed guidance near the roof for starting a hole at a 45° angle. (EXHIBIT 4) This support does not surround the drill steel but simple cradles the drill steel for "collaring" the hole. Once the hole is started, the support can he lowered. The support plate is hinged to allow the drill mast to pass. The advantage of having vertical motion of the center of rotation on a dual mast drill is shown in EXHIBIT 5. Following the criteria recommended by Birmingham Bolt Company, the truss bolts should he at a 45° angle and one fifth of the width of the entry from the rib. Therefore, in an entry 20 ft. wide, the hole should be drilled 4 ft. from the rib and at the 45° angle previously mentioned. With the limitations inherent to dual boom drills, that is, the masts cannot pass each other nor can one mast pass the center line of the machine even if the other is positioned out of the way, it is impossible to accommodate much variation in seam height and maintain the recommended criteria. As shown in EXHIBIT 5, a center of rotation 17 inches above the floor will start a hole 4 ft. and 45°angle at a height of 67 inches. Any height above 67 inches

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. Application of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (1) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable correc- tions for sand thickness. The proceduer in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory. In an effort to place the analysis of electric logs on a quantitative basis, there is need for a better understanding of the many factors that influence an electric-log curve. These factors may be large differences in sand thickness, permeability of the sand, salinity of the interstitial water, mud resistivity, formation temperature, and other sources. A number of examples were presented by Archie,' which treat the effect of sand thickness on measured resistivity. THE No. 9 mine of the Wheeling & Lake Erie Coal Mining Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna & Co., at Fairpoint, Ohio, has normally produced about 1000 tons of coal daily for several years, but recently it was converted into an experimental mine to afford means of studying new methods and equipment under consideration for development and mining. Among other projects, the possibility of using a duck-bill, self- loading conveyor in driving entries, with a view of in- creasing the rate of progress where quick development is of importance was studied. Actual operation soon revealed that even though break-throughs are made ,every 60 ft., as required by the state mining laws, the :amount of natural Ventilation reaching the working face was not sufficient to supply the men and that in ,order to obtain a plentiful supply of pure. air and maximum efficiency and to avoid costly interruptions after shots, it was necessary to supply auxiliary ventilation by using Ventube and a Vano fan.

The underground mining industry is presently using the fluid network analyzer and digital computer to analyze ventilation systems. The availability of the digital computer and ventilation programs to mining companies has escalated its use, permitting the design and modification of new or existing mine ventilation systems to be projected completely and thoroughly with consistent precision. Because the analog computer has been analyzing ventilation systems accurately for many years, a comparison of the analog and digital methods was warranted. This report summarizes a detailed comparison for one mine, based on parallel analyses by the two computer systems.

The purpose of the research described in this report was to develop techniques for using ilmenite from domestic deposits for the production of titanium tetrachloride. The research was done by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the General Services Administration under contract DMP-116, Utilization of Domestic Ilmenite. Bench-scale continuous chlorination of an Idaho ilmenite containing 27.9 percent titanium and 35.6 percent iron yielded a crude titanium tetrachloride suitable for purification and for the production of titanium metal and pigment. A summary of the results of 380 hours of operation showed that 82.4 percent of the titanium was chlorinated, with 92.5 percent utilization of chlorine. The construction- of a. quartz tube chlorinator 4-inches in diameter and 24 inches long is described with the necessary details of operation.

"The Museum of Science and Industry U-505 Submarine Relocation project in Chicago, IL consisted of building an underground reinforced concrete vault (37' deep) for the Museum's new U-505 exhibit. This WWII submarine was captured in 1944, had been located outdoors at the Museum since 1954 and was lowered into its new exhibit area in 2004. A unique combination of earth retention, water cut-off and underpinning systems allowed a forty-two foot (42') deep excavation underneath th is historic museum. The museum - originally built in 1893 for the Chicago World's Fair - was closely monitored for building movements throughout construction. The underpinning systems, construction activities and monitoring results are presented herein. IntroductionThe historic U-505 German submarine at the Museum of Science & Industry was restored, moved approximately 1,000' and then lowered into its new indoor home (Figures 1, 2 and 3). The new underground exhibit opened this year celebrating the 61st anniversary of the German submarine's capture on June 4, 1944. On this historic day, Captain Daniel V. Gallery, a Chicago native, led the Navy in the siege of this submarine near the coast of Africa. This U-boat was the only German sub captured by the United States Navy in WWII and the Enigma machines, codebooks and publications recovered from the sub helped the war effort."

Divided opinions concerning dredging-permit locations and boating uses on the Kansas River in northeastern Kansas led to a study of the recreation potential on the river by a legislatively mandated interagency group (five agencies) that included the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). In addition, the KGS conducted its own study of the river corridor, encompassing the development, geology, and economic resources of the corridor (Brady and others, 1998). The corridor area is 12 mi wide and 140 mi long (171 river miles). Included in the study was the potential impact of restric¬tions to river dredging. The Kansas River and its floodplain in northeastern Kansas are underlain by Lower Permian and Upper Pennsylvanian limestones and shales. The river and its floodplain are the major sources of sand and gravel for northeastern Kansas, and the limestones along the river bluffs supply crushed stone and building stone. The population of the 10-county area bordering the river has grown by 20% since 1980, and now comprises nearly 40% of the state's population (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1996). Projections (Floerchinger, 1992) indicate close to 50% of the Kansas population will reside in these counties by 2025, with a continued increase in the demand for aggregates. Factors such as floodplain width, price and availability of land, and overburden ratios tend to favor river dredging on the lower part of the river, and floodplain or pit dredging on the upper portion. The use of alternate sources of sand and gravel such as the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers would increase sand prices due to transportation costs to much of the 10-county area. In 1996, river and pit dredges along the Kansas River supplied more than 3 million tons of sand and gravel valued at about $8 million to northeastern Kansas. As a result of its study, the KGS had concerns with the idea of large recreation zones on the river that excluded river dredging in areas of presently large population and projected population growth. This controversial issue is likely to recur elsewhere.

The sheet-like NiS-ZnS heterostructured composites were prepared by the microwave hydrothermal. The fabrication of the heterojunctions broadened the range of light response of ZnS. The photoexcited electrons of ZnS migrated to the redox potential of NiS/Ni2S under visible light irradiation, which can facilitate the effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in space. The visible photocatalytic activity towards hydrogen production for NiS/ZnS nanosheet heterostructed composites without co-catalyst achieved 0.28 mmol h–1, and the quantum efficiency was up to 18.6% under the wavelength with 420 nm visible light irradiation.

In 1984, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.5, Bureau of Mines began a study of the 94,370-acre Arc Dome study area (4-667) in order to appraise its mineral resources, The Bureau of Mines mapped and sampled mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and near the area, The study area is located in the Toiyabe National Forest, about 54 mi north of Tonopah, Nye County, NV, It is estimated that over 500 claims have been staked in the study area since the mid-1800?s. In January 1986, there were 108 active mining claims completely inside and 59 on the boundary. Another 283 active claims were outside the study area but within 1 mi of the boundary, In addition to the large number of claims staked, exploration activity is also reflected by the almost 700 inactive workings that were found during field investigation.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.

Samples of materials containing pyrite from various coal mines and coalbeds were studied to compare their compositions and oxidizing characteristics. Pyrite was the only form of iron sulfide identified, but X-ray diffraction, emission spectrography, and microscopic analyses revealed similar suites of minerals and trace elements. The pyrite occurred usually in spherical clusters of very small crystals. The oxidation of pyrite in solutions of PeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 and in the presence of an iron oxidizing bacterium Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, was studied through a manometric technique. FeS04 or Fe2(SO4)3 solutions had no appreciable influence on pyrite oxidation under the test conditions, The bacterium acted as a catalyst, greatly increasing the oxidation rates; however, in three samples that also contained calcites, bacterial oxidation was greatly reduced. The oxidation rates also increased approximately as the percentage of pyrite in the samples increased. For the series of samples studied, there was no definite correlation of the results with the location of the various mines nor with the acidity of alkalinity of the mine drainage.

In recent years an important function of the mining engineer has been the appraisal of the value of mining-properties required by those planning consolidations of a number of' individual operations. In no field of productive industry have the economic results attainable by consolidation been more clearly shown than in the mining-regions of the United States. In many important mining-centers unification of ownership of the most valuable properties has already partially or completely been attained, and, in other districts, projected absorptions and consolidations await only favorable financial conditions for their consummation. The iron-ore districts of the Lake Superior region, the coal-mines of Colorado, of Wyoming and of Utah, the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania, the Connellsville coking-coal mines, and large areas of bituminous coal-land in Pennsylvania, in Ohio, in the Indian Territory and in other portions of the United States, are now largely controlled by a few corporations operating on a large scale, or by a number of corporations working in harmony because of an affiliation and interleaving of interests. The tact of keen financiers and the diplomacy of men of great administrative ability are the chief operative forces in conceiving and accomplishing such consolidations, but in formulating and maturing them, the services of the mining engineer are often required to supply the facts upon which they must be based. The thermodynamzc properties oJ liquid Cd-Sb alloys were investigated using the cell arrangement measurments were obtained every 2°C at a heating and cooling rate of 12°C per hr and at equilibrium every 2O0C frorn 500°C down through the stable liquidus. The S-shaped asCd US composition curve was used in the cotnposition regzon near Cd,Sb, to calculate a tempeerture-dependent inleraction coefficient from quasichemical theory. Rapid changes in a scd were observed at a transition temperature varying from 400" to 465°C depending on con/kosition. It could not be determined if the changes in aScd were discontinuous, but tlze composition dependeke of the magnitude of the change is indicative of a second-order phase transformation in the liquid. The values of the experimental changes in ASCd are in agreement with calculations from the slope of the transition temperature, using the concept that a second-ovdev phase transition occurs in liquid Cd-Sb alloys. II is suggested that the transformalion is associated with the formation of Cd4Sb3 molecules in the liquid. ThE structure of liquid alloys is the subject of many investigations. X-ray, resistivity, and thermody-namic data have been interpreted as indicating varying degrees of short-range order in the liquid in alloy systems forming inter metallic compounds. In general, the melting process is not a transition from an ordered to a completely disordered state, but some degree of order is retained in the liquid. Maximum ordering in the liquid state occurs close to the melting temperature of the compound and the arrangement of atoms becomes more random at higher temperatures. Of special interest in this respect is the Cd-Sb system. It is one of the few metallic systems which form both stable and metastable compounds when liquid alloys are cooled at normal rates. The stable system exhibits an intermetallic compound, CdSb, melting at 459"c.l A second compound, CdrSbs, has also been reported,' melting close to this temperature. The metastable system has one compound, CdsSbz, melting at 420"c.I Resistivity measurements on liquid Cd-Sb alloys close to the liquidus temperatures have been interpreted in terms of a complex ordering behavior which changes rapidly with increasing temperature.3 The resistivity-composition curve is characterized by two maxima corresponding in composition to CdSb and CdsSbz. The resistivity-temperature plots show sharp breaks for alloys in the composition range of 45 to 70 at. pct Cd on cooling through a transition temperature close to the stable liquidus. Fisher and phillips4 investigated the influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of liquid CdSb alloys. The viscosity of some alloys increases sharply on supercooling below the stable liquidus. A maximum in the viscosity-composition curve occurs at the composition CdSb. The thermodynamic properties of liquid Cd-Sb alloys have been investigated by Seltz and ~e~itt' and Elliott and chipmane by the electromotive-force method and their results are in good agreement. However, these investigations were carried out at temperatures well above the liquidus temperatures of the alloys, and the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force, dE/dT, were obtained from experimental points for each alloy at a few temperatures considerably above the liquidus temperature. Scheil and ~aach' investigated the thermodynamic properties of this system by the dew point method in the temperature range from about 100°C above the stable liquidus down into the supercooled liquid region. They reported several anomalies, i.e., the activity of a melt on heating differed from that on cooling, and the activity increased sharply in the limited temperature interval immediately above the liquidus temperature of the stable alloy, followed by a sudden decrease below the liquidus. Values obtained on heating and cooling were not in agreement. A reinvesti-gation of a few alloys by Scheil and Kalkuhl' by the electromotive-force method failed to confirm these observations. The authors concluded that the anomalies were due to inhomogeneities in the starting alloys and they discarded their previous results. The present investigation was undertaken in order to obtain thermodynamic data close to the liquidus temperature and in the supercooled region where the anomalies were originally reported, employing the electro motive-force method. This method is quite precise and will most easily permit observations of small changes in activity and partial molar entropy with temperature. Measurements were taken every few degrees so that the dE/dT values could be calculated over the entire temperature range and small changes in the thermodynamic properties close to the liquidus temperature could be observed. Surface oxide was removed by scraping and then melting the metals under vacuum and filtering through Pyrex wool. When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of variables in equipment and procedure on tube test results. This information was then to be used to formulate specifications, preferably within the practical ranges of existing machines, for test procedures capable of yielding precise and meaningful data concerning the magnetic separation of any magnetite ore, regardless of its origin. A survey of current practice was conducted among laboratories using the Davis tube test. Many tube tests were performed to experimentally evaluate the variables most likely to affect test results. A simple method was then sought for adequately interpreting tube test results. The Davis magnetic tube concentrator is a laboratory machine designed to separate a small sample of pulverized magnetic iron ore into magnetic and non-magnetic fractions. It was developed in 1921 by mechanization of a test previously performed manually No significant changes have been made in the design of the apparatus since that time. The Davis magnetic tube test continues to serve as a practical basis for judging the amenability of an ore to magnetic separation and for controlling magnetic separation plant operations. The apparatus consists of an inclined cylindrical glass tube supported adjacent to closely spaced pointed poles of a powerful C-magnet. (Fig. 1). To conduct a tube test, a sample of suitably prepared ore is poured into the water-filled tube. With wash water flowing through, the tube is oscillated to gradually reject the non-magnetic and weakly magnetic ore particles until the desired degree of separation is attained. Both the magnetic concentrate and the tailings may be recovered for examination. MAGNETIC SEPARATION BY THE DAVIS TUBE Mechanical separation of a specified mineral component from an ore usually requires comminution to fine sizes for sufficient liberation. Some distinguish- ing property of the mineral is then exploited to sort the desired mineral particles from the gangue particles. The magnetic separation of iron ores is based on the fact that magnetite, Fe3O4, is strongly attracted by a magnetic field while the gangue minerals are not. Maghemite, ?-Fe2O3, which may occur in certain chemically processed ores, responds similarly to magnetite. The magnetic process is practical only when the loss of iron in the form of relatively nonmagnetic hematite, Fe2O3, goethite, Fe2O3.nH2O, or other iron mineral can be tolerated. In the Davis magnetic tube concentrator, magnetic attraction holds magnetically susceptible particles in a magnetic field. Forces due to gravity, inertia, and fluid-solid friction tend to remove the less susceptible particles from the field. The probability that a given middling particle will be rejected from the tube in a given period of time is an inverse function of its magnetite content, with some modification due to particle size and mineral specific gravities. The net result is that ore particles tend to be rejected in their order of increasing magnetite content, while the retained portion or magnetic concentrate increases in grade continuously during the process.
