The late J. P. Sparrow, chief operating engineer of the New York Edison CO., carried out a series of practical tests on condenser tubes of several copper alloys and reported on the results to the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies at its meeting in September, 1913. In the preparation of these tubes the senior author had the pleasure of cooperating. Copper-zinc alloys in the proportions of 60-40,70-30,80-20, 90-10, and Admiralty metal, which is in effect 70-30 with 1 per cent. of tin, were tried. Monel metal and several copper-nickel alloys, and 8, 5, and 3 per cent. aluminum bronze were also tried. At the time of this report, the aluminum bronze had been in service for 4 1/2 years and seemed to be giving especially good results but later it began to fail and showed no substantial improvement over Admiralty metal. Monel metal was unsatisfactory and the nickel alloys apparently did not give better service than the Admiralty alloy. Previous to the publication of the report, and after considerable discussion, it was agreed that a test where tubes of different kinds could be under laboratory observation would be advisable, so the apparatus described here was set up in The American Brass Co.'s Waterbury Laboratory. This was fitted with tubes of copper, brass, bronze, nickel silver, cupro-nickel and other alloys, and the test started on Oct. 11, 1912. Salt water from East River, New York harbor, was barrelled and transported to the laboratory for the test. A fresh supply, completely replacing the water in service, was obtained at the end of each six months period. Plan of Procedure In general, the procedure was to inspect the tubes at short intervals and to remove those that had begun to leak. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY BY "thermochemical factors" we refer to those variables which affect the net heat which must be put into the bath in order to make a heat of steel from any given set of charge materials. This is admittedly only one phase of the production rate problem. The whole problem includes also consideration of rate of charging, flame radiation intensity, rate of optimum fuel input obtainable without undue damage to the furnace structure and any variations in conditions such as stirring, slag volume or viscosity which affect the rate at which heat can flow down and away from those exposed surfaces where the heat is first received from the flame. Because a given type of charge in a shop is often considered as being nearly constant in both physical and chemical characteristics from one heat to another, and because such a state of affairs may be thought of as resulting in a reasonably constant net heat requirement, this requirement is usually neglected as an invariable, inevitable matter, about which nothing can be done. With normally variable charge, and variable percentages of limestone and cold pig, however, the net heat requirement can be subject to very appreciable change; it may also be affected by such things as the currently popular procedure of blowing oxygen into the bath, To bring the general problem of production rate into better perspective, therefore, it seems worthwhile to try to evaluate the net bath heat requirement and the amount by which it may change through variation in different factors. Because our calculated values of net heat are admittedly uncertain, we have tried to check them in part by statistical data on actual production rates over rather large groups of commercial heats. The results of calculation of net heat requirements in a wide range of actual commercial practices may first be summarized briefly. We find a wide range between the extremes of different practices, as would be expected, with duplex practice (essentially blown metal plus hot metal) having essentially a zero net heat requirement, an all-cold charge practice somewhat over 1 million Btu per ton of steel and a high hot metal practice about 0.75 million Btu per ton. Over the commercial range of scrap plus hot metal practice, increasing the percentage of hot metal from 40 to 78 pct, with other factors nearly constant, decreased the net heat by only some 5-10 pct, The net heat is increased by about 1.2 pct for each I pct of the metallic charge present as cold pig. Calculated values of oxygen supplied by air varied from about 25 up to 60 lb per ton of steel, and in a 60 pct hot metal practice, an increase from 32 to 52 lb oxygen from air decreased the calculated net heat from 0.88 to 0.74 million Btu per ton. Use of pure cold oxygen to substitute for about one half of the total charge ore (about 28 lb oxygen replacing 145 lb ore per ton of steel) decreased the

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations In the United States was made In accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items Is confidential. 1t presents analytical data for 4, 802 samples, representing the products of 117 companies. The samples were collected during December 1954 and January and February 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered 6y this survey Include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation, A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

A comparative study has been made of the ex-tractability of several of the transitim metals from thiocyanate sohtions using methyl isobutyl ketone as the organic solvent. Extractions were made of scandium (III), chromium (III), manganese (II), iron (III), and cobalt (II), of which only the scandium , iron, and cobalt were readily extracted. All extractions were made at pH 2 and at 25.5 °C. A series of extraction experiments was made on scandium, iron, and cobalt to determine the effect of thiocyanate cmcentration added as the ammonium and also as the calcium salt. Also determined was the effect of metal ion concentratim and ionic strength on the distribution ratio. Analyses of the organic extracts indicated the scandium and iron were extracted principally in the uncharged trithiocyanate form, while the extractable form of the cobalt contained the cobaltotetrathiocyanate anion. THE chemical separation of metal complexes in solution by solvent extraction has in recent years been developed for large scale separation as well as bench scale work in the laboratory. It has also found increased application in analytical chemistry. Its extension to extractive metallurgy as a unit operation is best illustrated in the recovery of uranium and vanadium from their leached liquor.5-8 The extractability of some thiocyanate systems have been extensively investigated. The rate earths have been separated from one another using butanol as a olvent. Scandium was effectively extracted in ethyl ether using ammonium thiocyanate as the com-plexing agent.'' Similarly, the separation of hafnium from zirconium has been reported using ether""' or hexone13 as the organic solvent. The extractability of various metal thiocyanates in ethyl ether is given by 0ck.l Sharp and Wilkinson15 prepared nickel-free cobalt slats by thiocyanate extraction. The mechanism of extraction of titanium (IV) thiocyanate with methyl isobutyl ketone was determined by elafosse.''" The characterization of cobalt (TI) thiocyanate complex using methyl isobutyl ketone as the solvent at near neutral aqueous solution and the spectrometric studies of the ex-tractable cobalt complex has been made by Hard." It is noteworthy to mention at this point that the fundamental characteristic of ketone (oxonium) solvent extraction is that the extractable species are uncharged ion pairs solvated by the ketone molecules, but probably still partially hydrated.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. In view of the increasingly widespread deterioration of concrete structures as the result of the interaction of the alkalies sodium and potassium released by hydration of portland cement and susceptible rocks and minerals in aggregates, it is believed that a paper summarizing the geographic distribution of these aggregates will be of interest to producers and users of concrete, concrete products, and concrete-making materials. THIS paper reviews the problem of alkali-aggre-gate reaction in concrete and describes the geologic and geographic occurrence and distribution of alkali-reactive sand and gravel in western United States. It includes no discussion of crushed stone or synthetic aggregates. Most deposits of sand and gravel are accumulations of particles of rocks and minerals from a variety of sources, and it is not unusual for at least one or two varieties of the rocks to contain some form of reactive material. Examination by petro-graphic methods of many sands and gravels, as well as manufactured aggregates, has shown that a comparatively high proportion of the deposits does contain, in greater or lesser degree, rocks and minerals known to be deleteriously reactive with the alkalies of cement. Fortunately the amount of reactive materials is commonly less than that necessary to cause deleterious effects in concrete. As investigation of unsound concrete structures progresses, it becomes evident that the alkali-aggre-gate reaction is even more widespread than supposed, Figs. 1 and 2. Even though some parts of the country appear at present to be immune, further investigations will probably show that the effects of alkali-aggregate reaction can be seen in many structures in these areas, although only on a small scale in most of them. Many concrete structures will, of course, have lived their useful life before disintegration from this cause is serious, and in others the alkali-aggregate reaction may never become significant even though the microscopic evidence of reaction is present. The alkali-aggregate reaction first was reported to be a cause of deterioration of concrete in 1940 when Stanton1 described expansion of concrete pavements in California. Similar expansion and deterioration of concrete was recognized during succeeding years in concrete structures located in many parts of the country, but particularly in the western states. A number of concrete laboratories2 became interested in the problem. It was soon determined that only certain combinations of aggregate and cement caused the alkali-aggregate reaction to take place, and moreover that the reaction progresses only in the presence of water. Further research proved that cements containing more than 0.60 pct total alkalies (pct Na,O + 0.658 x pct K2O), when used with aggregates containing appreciable amounts of reactive ingredients, caused the reaction to take place, usually with subsequent deterioration of the concrete. During the last few years this limitation has been adhered to in both government and private construction as the maximum allowable alkali content of cement to be used with aggregates of known alkali reactivity. Because of this limitation, it appears that deleterious reaction either has been reduced or eliminated in many recently built structures in which it probably would otherwise have occurred. Recent tests have shown that the degree of expansion obtained with any particular cement-aggre-gate combination depends not only on the alkali content of the cement but also upon the relation of this alkali content to the amount and degree of reactivity of reactive constituents in the aggregate.' In laboratory mortar bars, opal and cements with alkali content of as low as 0.2 pct (as equivalent of Na2O) have produced deleterious expansion as the result of alkali-aggregate reaction. These experiments demonstrate that aggregates containing even 0.1 pct of opal are deleteriously reactive. It was soon determined that alkali-silica gels were formed by the interaction of the alkalies of the cement and the reactive aggregate, Figs. 3 and 4. Osmotic or swelling pressures produced by the continued hydration of these gels cause expansion of the concrete with resulting cracking, warping, and dislocation. Evidence of the alkali-aggregate reaction can be seen by a petrographic study of the deteriorated concrete. Among the first structures studied by this method was Parker Dam on the Colorado River, California-Arizona. In the concrete from this dam pebbles of rhyolite, andesite, siliceous limestone, and chalcedonic chert were found to be reactive.

A field project to develop and demonstrate a method for alleviating problems of highly-mineralized ground water where they occur as isolated zones or pockets in fresh-water aquifers is being conducted in the Ogallala Aquifer of eastern New Mexico by the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Center. Removal of contaminated water is by a large-capacity well and the pumped poor-quality water is used locally for secondary recovery of oil, Benefits of the operation are threefold in that the aquifer is being reclaimed for future fresh water production, contaminated water is being used beneficially, and fresh water which otherwise would have been used for waterflooding is available for other purposes. Ground-water quality in the site has improved markedly after 21 months of operation. Water quality in 15 specially-drilled monitoring wells has returned to the original quality level of the aquifer, and chloride concen¬trations in the pumping well have dropped to half the maximum level recorded thus far. Project results are very favorable and provide guidelines for initiation of similar undertakings in localities where needed.

The never-ending quest for gold-bearing ore deposits is a primary industry in Canada, employing people of widely differing expertise. The exploration models for gold deposits are generally geologically complex and the targets have relatively small cross-sectional areas. These problems are compounded in Canada by the minimal outcrop exposure in most mineral provinces and the high percentage of water-covered areas. Naturally the chances of successfully delineating an economic gold deposit are very much greater if all parties involved can act as a team of explorationists constantly confemng amongst themselves particularly as the applicable disciplines generally overlap and complement each other. Three case histories (see Figure 1) are presented to illustrate this philosophy with emphasis placed on the role of the geophysicist in translating the exploration model as defined by the geologist into physically measurable parameters and identifying target areas with similar characteristics. The Conwest-Miminiska property in Ontario is a grassroots exploration play. Additional ore reserves needed to be delineated on the Salmita property in the Northwest Territories. At Laura Lake, near Chapais, Quebec geophysical methods were employed to trace thin high-grade mineral intersections under deep overburden and severe cultural interference.

The Parral area, a part of the Parral mining district of Southern Chihuahua, is situated in and near the City of Parral, with the most important mine of the district, La Prieta, lying within the city limits. The famous Veta Colorado and Palmilla veins near Villa Escobedo or Minas Nuevas are a few kilometers to the northeast (see Fig. 1). The chief metals produced are silver, lead and zinc, with some copper and gold. This area was one of the earliest to produce metal in Mexico, according to records at Parral, which show that mining started in 1632. In near-by Santa Barbara, however, mining had begun 85 years earlier. It is said that when silver was discovered in the Veta Colorado, the Santa Barbara gold deposits, at that time nearly exhausted, were immediately abandoned for the more profitable silver mines at Minas Nuevas (New Mines) During the post-revolutionary period, 1923-1928, the author made many trips to the Parral district to do mine examination work for several units of the American Smelting and Refining Co. This paper is an abstract of some of the geologic data collected, together with the results of a microscopic study of the ores and rocks—the latter investigation made at the University of Minnesota—and is intended to supplement one recently published. Topography The Parral district lies in the eastern foothills belt of the Sierra Madre Oeste. The area is about evenly divided between fairly flat to rolling plains and mesas on the south and rounded hills to rough precipitous slopes on the west and north. The relief is approximately 550 m. (1800 ft.). The successful re-opening of the Cobar min- eral field was dependent upon the success- ful introduction of highly productive, low cost mining. Mechanised cut and fill stop- ing with incline access was selected for the C.S.A. mine because it permitted flexi- bility, complete primary extraction with no secondary pillar recovery, minimised dilu- tion and oxidation, a minimum of pre-pro- duction development and because diesel powered load-haul-dump (L.H.D.) units were proving reliable and highly productive in the U.S.A. Although L.H.D. vehicles are the key to the success of the mining method, four other main groups of vehicles are utilised in the mine - trucks, scaling vehicles, ser- vicing vehicles and specialist vehicles. The operating requirements at the C.S.A. mine are more stringent than those encount- ered in many other underground mining oper- ations. The first L.H.D. vehicle used at Cobar - the Transloader - had considerable difficulty in loading and discharging coarse production ore. The Wagner ST5 Scoop Tram performed this duty much better. However, the first generation Scoop Trams were not robust enough to withstand the heavy duty and many modifications were necessary before acceptable availabilities were obtained. Similar modifications were necessary for the Eimco 916 vehicle but the Eimco 915 unit came much closer to meeting the duty requirements. Eventually Cobar technical personnel design- ed a L.H.D. vehicle to meet specific C.S.A. mine conditions. These units have proven most satisfactory. Over 8 years of operation the underground vehicle fleet has become a proliferation of vehicle types. A standardisation pro- gram has been initiated based upon common prime movers being mated with "trailer" units to serve specific functions. Standardisation will reduce inventory levels and facilitate training of operating and maintenance personnel.

For many mining operations the challenge of equalling World Best Practices has become the key motivator for increasing mine productivities and for lowering total costs. In most instances this will only be achieved if mines optimise their total system rather than minimising specific costs within unit operations. In the past, drilling and blasting have been viewed as a cost to be minimised rather than operations which should have their impacts fully leveraged. Once a hardrock orebody is defined the activity which has the most substantial impact in determining the efficiency of a mining operation is the blasting. The output from a blast affects every downstream operation; only by understanding the extent and interactions can the mine be optimised. Substantial improvements to hardrock mining, quarrying and excavation operations are achievable. Instead of seeking the regular one to three per cent improvements based on reduction of consumables, mine operators would be well advised to go for much bigger targets of ten to 30 per cent by fully leveraging the drill and blast operations.

Members of AIME, I read to you now a portion of a very fine business letter which we received several years ago. This letter originated in Rangoon, Burma, and reads in part: "Rest assured, if your goodselves see with us eye to eye, sure as certain we should get the business". I don't plan to give anybody "the business" today, but you can rest assured that if some of "you goodselves see with me eye to eye" on what I am about to discuss, I would be most pleased. My talk with you today will discuss the Federal Corporate income tax and its effect on our lives as engineers. In the-engineering-construction business we are faced with all the usual form of taxation which includes such items as sales tax, use tax, school tax, contractor; gross receipt tax, import duties and excise taxes, severance taxes, etc, adinfinutum.

Approach As part of a research study aimed at reducing human error accidents in mining the Bureau of Mines developed a computerized information retrieval system which provides relevant human factors or ergonomics information on 19 mining-related special interest categories.

Profiled below are the eight RMCMI 1999 Scholarship Award winners. Seven of the eight attended the 95th Regular Meeting and convention at Crested Butte, Colorado in late June. Each spoke during the Scholarship Awards Monday luncheon and shared their goals with attendees. In addition to receiving a $1,500 tuition credit, thanks to the Patrons of the Institute annual funding of scholarships, each received recognition at the luncheon with a brass plaque signifying this honor. The winners are guests of the Institute Sunday through Tuesday and have an incredible opportunity to meet many in the coal industry who could be potential employers. The state vice presidents host the winners and pay for their travel and hotel expenses. This is a continuing scholarship and may be renewed for tuition credit again in the senior year if they remain a full time student and if recommended by the dean of their college or university. A resident from each of the eight member RMCMI states is selected by the Scholarship committee from Board approved institutions. Criteria for these annual awards is that the recipient (1) is a full time sophomore student who will use the tuition credit the junior year. (2) Be both a U. S. citizen and a legal resident of the member stare. (3) Maintain good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in western coal as a possible career path. Among the more important factors involved in the use of high explosives in blasting operations is the means employed to bring about the detonation of the charge. When flame is applied to high explosives many of them may burn if not confined; but all of them when burning under certain conditions of confinement may detonate. Detonation may also be effected by mechanical means, such as frictional impact caused by a blow or by rubbing between surfaces. By this means, however, the full effect of the explosive charge may not be developed, so that a partial detonation, often accompanied by the burning of the explosive, results. When nitroglycerin was first used it was fired by the application of flame, but considerable difficulty was experienced in exploding it with certainty and in obtaining uniform resl'llts. In 1864 Allred Noble, a Swedish engineer, discovered that nitroglycerin could be surely and completely detonated by exploding in contact with it a small quantity of an initiatory explosive. Mercury fulminate was the substance then found capable of producing the best results There are many other fulminates and other substances that will produce complete detonation of commercial" high" explosives, but detonators or electric detonators containing mercury fulminate as the characteristic ingredient are still almost exclusively used in this country. The term" detonator" is used in the publications of the Bureau of Mines to designate what the miner calls a "blasting cap "-a copper capsule containing a small quantity of some detonating compound that is ignited by a fuse. The term" electric detonator" is applied to a blasting cap that is similar except for being ignited by means of a small wire which is heated to incandescence or fused by the passage of an electric current. One of the conditions prescribed by the Bureau of Mines for a permissible explosive a is that it shall be :fired by a detonator, or preferably an electric detonator, having a charge equivalent to that of the standard detonator used at the Pittsburgh testing station. A further requirement is that this charge shall consist by weight of 90 parts of mercury fulminate and 10 parts of potassium chlorate (or their equivalents). At the request of a manufacturer of permissible explosives, an investigation was undertaken by the bureau to determine the relative strength of detonators and electric detonators having different compositions. The tests of electric detonators herein reported were conducted by H. F. Braddock, junior chemist; J. W. Koster, J. E. Tiffany, junior mining engineers; and A. S. Crossfield, junior explosives chemist, at the Pittsburgh testing station of the bureau. Similar tests of detonators were not conducted because it was believed that the results would not show sufficient variation to warrant such tests. It is hoped that the conclusions drawn from the tests made will be of service to those using explosives by enabling them to select the grade of detonator or electric detonator that will insure the most effective results. The conclusions are given in this bulletin, which is published by the Bureau of Mines as one of a series of publications dealing with the testing of explosives and the precautions that should be taken to increase safety and efficiency in the use of explosives in mining operations. The results of tho experiments described in this bulletin show that the average percentage of failures of explosives to detonate was increased more than 20 per cent when the lower grades of electric detonators were used instead of No. 6 electric detonators, and was increased more than 50 per cent when these lower grades were used instead of No. 8 electric detonators. It is noteworthy, however, that when sensitive explosives, such as 40 per cent strength ammonia dynamite (p. 33), were tested under conditions ideal for detonation, the same energy was developed irrespective of the electric detonator used. When tests were made with a less sensitive explosive, such as a 40 per cent strength ammonia dynamite containing nitrosubstitution compounds (p. 32), the energy developed increased with the grade of the electric detonator used. For example, the average efficiency of four different explosives was increased 10.4 per cent when a No.6 electric detonator was used instead of a No.4 electric detonator, and 14.9 per cent when aN 0.8 electric detonator was used (see tabulation onp.45). The results of the tests emphasize the importance of using explosives in a fresh condition, but as fresh explosives can not always be had in mining work, strong detonators should be used in order to offset any deterioration of explosives from age.

Various seam conditions had been examined during longwall production at RAG German hard coal mines. Based on the field data a prediction method was developed considering separation planes as influencing factors for roof falls at the face. The characteristics, orientation, and density of separation are important factors on the occurrence of roof falls. In addition to geological influences, the performance parameters and geometry of support must be considered and optimized for the prediction and prevention of roof falls in a longwall face. Based on detailed macro- and microscopic investigations of e coal seams considering various ranks of carbonization, the origin and characteristics of separation planes are determined and a strata-specific influence on roof fall is interpreted. It was assessed that the coal face fracturing and displacement caused by the stress depend on the floor and roof strata conditions due to activation of the existing separation planes. Field studies are shown giving an idea of influences by advance rates of the longwall face, support delay and hydraulic pressure to the roof control in longwall faces in depth of more than 3000 ft. The analysis includes the application of specific software developed for longwall roof fall prediction as a result of a European research project. The software allows a laminar graphic display of roof fall probability, which is used for recognition of risk areas and risk management.

Preplaced cable bolts - fully grouted old hoisting cables or stress relieved steel strands - have been used succesfully to pre- reinforce ore contact zones and pillars in sublevel stoping at Outo- kumpu Oy mines for ten years. The purpose is to make open stoping methods possible even in "poor'' conditions and to decrease waste rock dilution. Since 1971 more than 120 km cable bolting has been done, and plans for this year in five mines amount to 33 km. In order to understand the function of cable bolt, pull-out tests have been done both in the laboratory and in situ. Bond strength between cable and cement is highly dependent on cable structure and cable surface dirtiness. Steel cables with steel core and rough surface structure have highest bond strength ( 6 MP~). A cable bolt is a friction bolt. After losing its peak bond strength - after starting to move - a cable bolt still has a high loading capacity due to the friction caused by the uneven surface of the cable. Cable bolting is done before actual stoping from existing drifts, sublevel drifts, e.g. or from special bolting drifts. In general stress relieved steel strands are used; 2 x 15.2 mm dia per hole. FEM or BEM calculation is utilized in cable bolting design. Bolts 2 are in fan shape, 10 m ... 50 m long and are spaced 1/20 m ... 1/50 m2 at stope walls. Pretensioning of cable is not needed, when bolting is done before rock deformations. Bolting costs vary between 0.3 USD ... 1.0 USD/ore ton. In the beginning only manual cable installing technique bras used. Now bolting can be done as fully mechanized with the developed cable bolting machine; i.e. drilling of the hole, installing and cutting of cables and grouting of hole.
