The subject matter of this paper will be discussed under three main headings. 1.-Fire-Resistant Fluids: (a) the need for such materials, based on historical events; (b) a definition of fire -resistant fluids; (c) general description, characteristics, operational parameters, advantages and disadvantages of oil-in-water emulsions (HFB), water-polymer fluids (HFC) and anhydrous or synthetic fluids (HFD). 2.-A review of equipment associated with the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids; (a) performance testing of hydraulic equipment, i.e. gear pumps, vane pumps, axial and radial piston pumps, hydraulic motors, etc., pressure, speed, filtration limitations, etc., and effects on valves, elastomers, paints, etc.; (b) hydraulic system design features and selection of suitable units; (c) types of mining applications currently employing fire-resistant fluids. 3.-Test methods used to evaluate fire-resistant fluids: (a) fire testing methods, i.e. wick tests, spray ignition testing, hot manifold tests, factory mutual tests, all to establish fire-resistancy parameters and acceptance; (b) new developments in fire-resistancy evaluation; (c) the examination of other performance tests, e.g., effects of evaporation, sliding wear, life of rolling element bearings, etc.

The last decade has seen a very rapid development in TBM tunnelling. Some trends are purely technical or economical and others relate more to preferences of different interests. Power levels have more than doubled and thrust levels too. Shield machines are developed to be able to handle harder rock and the open TBMs are made more feasible for `difficult' rock. What is right and what is wrong is more a matter of opinion, but one thing is certain: TBMs now are a useful tool and no longer an experimental work-shop for the enthusiasts.This paper highlights some recent developments and indicates some probable future ones. A few features that have increased the open TBMs' ability to cope with ever harder rock and also to overcome problems with poor rock are discussed in detail, using the Atlas Copco JARVA Mk 27 -the most powerful TBM built so far - as a reference.

Generally speaking, erosion, as a process which entails degradation of surface layers of earth under the influence of the mechanical energy of surface waters, and from the point of view of biosphere sustainability, is a harmful process. This is absolutely true when agricultural and forest areas are concerned. However, if erosion is viewed selectively, this general definition about its harm raises serious questions. In other words, the erosion which takes place in the terrains where there is no vegetation because of the geological composition of the soil, does no harm. On the contrary, if the mineralogical composition of such terrains is characterized by a presence of precious and rare metals, erosion can be very useful. It contributes to the creation of new alluvial deposits of these metals in the waters in the plain land. It is here that torrents from hills come down and cause erosion. And finally, if there were no erosion, there would be no renewable deposits of gravel and sand.

The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

The metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concerning the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chalcography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. Königsberger,"' i in 1909, was the first to apply polarized light to the microscopic study of opaque substances; Endell and Hanemann(2) were the next, in 1913. In 1919 and 1920, Wright(3,4) prepared two papers on the subject. In the first he developed the detailed mathematical theory from the viewpoint of the electromagnetic theory of light, and in the second described the various methods in use, giving improvements of his own. Surface mining is a very broad term and refers to any process of removing the earth, rock, and other strata in order to uncover the underlying mineral or fuel deposit. Strip mining is a type of surface mining in which the overburden is removed in narrow bands, one cut at a time. It is illustrated how differences in the basic chemistry of individual metal ions can be exploited to develop new or improved separating agents. Factors like coordination number preferred by the specific metal ion, the degree of coordinate saturation reached by the metal ion and its relation to the phase transferability of the complex species, kinetic factors as opposed to thermodynamic factors controlling the success of the separation, the nature and type of the donor atom employed in a separating agent in relation to the preferences of the metal ion, the significance of stereochemical factors and the hydrophobicity of the media are some of the important factors which are discussed and applied for the development of pa1ladiwn(TI) and nickel(TI) specific separating agents, respectively.

Mining economics is such that too conservative in safety will result in a considerable penalty in mining cost. However, initial planning and design of a mining project often must be done without complete information. The assurance of economical and safe mining is thus difficult. This study is focused on the improvement of the mine design associated with Zhaoyuan Gold Mine in P.R. China as more information becomes available. Attention is given to the selection of backfill structures. Based on a proposed practical finite element model, a design, which is believed to be not only reliable but also cost-effective, is recommended for further mining operations in this mine.

This report describes an in situ combustion project and three waterflood projects in Allen, Anderson, and Wilson Counties, Kansas, that will be visited during the 1964 annual tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the movement of heavy crude oil through the reservoir and into the wellbore with energy furnished by burning s portion of the crude oil therein. Another feature is the simultaneous injection of C02 and water, through separate tubing into input wells during early development, to increase injectivity at moderate pressures, Discussion of individual projects includes information on their early history, source and treatment of injection fluids, oil production-decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

"The development and operation of the milling circuits treating the different Selbaie orebodies are discussed in this paper. The project is reviewed from metallurgical evaluation through construction to present operating status. The current flowsheets are described, with discussion of some unusual features.IntroductionThe Selbaie concentrator commenced initial production in August 1981, treating underground B zone copper ore in a single 1500 t/d circuit. Throughput was increased to 1650 t/d in 1985. The mill was expanded in 1986 to treat ore from the A-I zone open pit; an independent circuit was added to selectively treat 5000 t/d of copper-zinc ore. Current total mill throughput through both circuits averages 7200 t/d with the production of approximately 270 t/d of copper concentrate and 230 t/d of zinc concentrate.This paper describes the stages involved in bringing the project from initial laboratory testing to its current status as one of the most important producers of silver, copper and zinc in Quebec and a major employer in the region."

The relationship between the apparent angle of rotation of monochromatic plane polarized light and the tilt of the basal pole from the surface normal has been experimentally determined for zirconium over the wavelength range of 500 to 655 mp. This relationship allows the determination of the spatial orientation of the basal pole of an individual grain in a polycvystal-ling zivrconium specimen to within ±3 deg by three simple tneasurements with a polarized-light metallurgical microscope. The method of measurement is discussed in detail. THE optical anisotropy of materials having noncubic crystal structures has long been used to reveal features by polarized-light microscopy. Petrographers have used measurements of certain optical properties to identify and classify transparent or translucent minerals. More recent work (i.e., Cameron1) has extended such measurements to opaque minerals in reflected light. Few attempts have been made to make similar measurements on noncubic metals. Couling and pearsall2 have reported that a sensitive tint plate can be used in a polarized-light metallurgical microscope to determine the position of the basal-plane trace in a grain of polycrystalline magnesium. Reed-Hill3 has reported that the same technique can be used for zirconium. We have found that the precision of measurement can be increased to about ±0.5 deg by using a Nakamura plate4,5 to determine the exact extinction position after the sensitive tint plate has been used to locate approximately the basal-plane trace. This report describes a method for measurement of another optical property, the apparent angle of rotation. This measurement permits determination of the angle between the basal pole of a grain of a hcp metal and the normal to the surface of the specimen. When the two measurements are combined, the orientation of the basal pole in space can be determined from three simple measurements on a single surface. One to two hundred such determinations will permit plotting of a basal-pole figure for the polycrystalline material with reasonable accuracy. When normally incident, monochromatic, plane-polarized light is reflected from the surface of an optically anisotropic material, the light may be converted to elliptically polarized light, the plane of vibration may be rotated, or both may occur. The el- lipticity, the angle of rotation, and the reflectivity can be related to the indices of refraction and the absorption coefficients of the material.6,7 Ellipticity values can be determined with an elliptical compensator, but not with the ease and precision desirable for the present purposes. Measurement of the angle of rotation requires only the determination of the angle from the crossed position (90 deg to the polarizer) that the analyzer must be rotated to obtain extinction when the trace of the optical axis in the surface is at 45 deg to the vibration direction of the polarizer. The angle of rotation of the analyzer is approximately 6/5 that of the true angle of rotation of the light as reflected from the specimen because there is a small amount of additional rotation produced during the passage of the reflected light through the mirror of the microscope. Since we are presently interested only in determining the tilt of the basal pole, the angle of rotation of the analyzer (the apparent angle of rotation of the light, i.e., uncorrected) can be used. Precision of the measurement can be increased substantially by the use of a Nakamura plate4,5 in determining the extinction position. In an optically uniaxial material (hcp or tetragonal crystal structure) the angle of rotation depends only on the optical properties of the material and the orientation of the optical axis of the grain relative to the plane of incidence of the plane-polarized light.7,8 Thus, in a metal such as zirconium, the apparent angle of rotation at the 45-deg position in any given wavelength of light is a direct measure of the tilt of the basal pole from the normal to the surface. If the optical properties vary with wavelength, the apparent angle of rotation for any given tilt of the basal pole will vary. None of the required information exists in the literature for zirconium nor for any other non-cubic metal. MEASUREMENTS ON SINGLE-CRYSTAL ZIRCONIUM A single-crystal sphere of zirconium 9/16 in. in diam was spark-cut from a single-crystal rod grown from iodide bar by an electron-beam zone-melting process.9 The damaged surface was removed by chemical polishing in a 45/45/10 mixture (by vol) of water, concentrated HNO3, and HF (48 pct) and then electropolishing at 50 v in a bath1' of methyl alcohol and perchloric acid (95/5 by vol) at -70-C. The single-crystal sphere was mounted in a five-axis goniometer stage having a removable eucentric X-ray diffraction goniometer head for the two inner orientation axes. The basal pole of the single-crysta sphere was aligned parallel to a third axis of the goniometer stage by using the sensitive tint method to determine the basal-plane trace at several rotational positions of the sphere. "Gallic acid is a sensitive, stable, colorimetric reagent for the determination of tantalum in the range of 2 to 40 µ g.Ta/ml. The method consists of the fusion of tantalum oxide with potassium pyrosulfate and solution of the cooled melt in saturated ammonium oxalate, followed by development of a yellow complex with an ethanolic solution of gallic acid. The tantalum-gallic acid complex absorbs over a broad region in the blue and near ultraviolet. Adverse effects due to interfering ions and solution conditions, such as oxalate concentration and pH, can be minimized by a suitable choice of wave length.by a suitable choice of wave length.A new and sensitive colorimetric method is provided that has been used successfully at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Federal Bureau of Mines for determining minor amounts of tantalum.INTRODUCTIONThe development of corrosion-resistant alloys at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory prompted a review of the analytical chemistry of columbium (niobium) and tantahnn. Not only are these elements difficult to determine in small amounts, but tantalum especially lacks both sensitive and characteristic color reactions. Various phenolic compounds have been suggested as colorimetric reagents for tantalum, Quentin and Wagner (10, p. 24B) 1/ recommend the use of tannin. The use of pyrogallol was suggested originally by Krivoshlykov (6, pp. 59-60), whose method recently has been subject to a number of modifications (3, pp. 249-254; 5, pp. 1340-1344; 1, pp. 1803-18oi; 4, pp. 345-350). The yellow coloration produced by pyrocatechol in an oxalate solution containing tantalum may also be used to estimate tantalum ( 11, pp, ll-1-4-148) . The use of hydrogen peroxide has been recommended also (7, pp. 164-165; 9, pp. 926-931).Aside from a lack of specificity and sensitivity, the major failing of phenolic reagents is their susceptibility to air oxidation. The oxidation products are highly colored and absorb in the same spectral region as the tantalum complex. Holding reductants are not completely satisfactory in minimizing this effect. Increasing the acidity, while retarding the oxidation, has an adverse effect on the tantalum sensitivity."

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. Iron (III) can easily and selectively be removed from acidic sulphate solutions with organo-phosphoric acids like Di-2-Ethyl-Hexyl-Phosphoric Acid [D2EHPA]. Stripping of the iron (III) loaded organic, however, is difficult unless highly concentrated inorganic acid solutions are used. In this paper results are shown for the enhanced stripping of iron from loaded D2EHPA by electro-reduction. The loaded solvent is contacted with a 2 M H2SO4 solution, which is continuously recycled in an electrochemical reactor where iron (III) is reduced to iron(II). As iron (II) is not extracted by D2EHPA, the equilibrium for iron (III)- D2EHPA is shifted towards the aqueous iron (Il)-sulphuric acid solution. The electro-reduction unit is a vessel with separated catholyte and anolyte chambers. The catholyte is the actual stripping solution where iron (III) is reduced to iron (II) on a stainless steel electrode. The anolyte is a 2 M H2SO4 solution where oxygen is evolved on a lead alloy electrode. A sintered glass plug separates the compartments. With this unit, enhanced stripping of iron from the solvent is possible under mild acid conditions [2 M H2SO4], and a concentrated ferrous sulphate solution can be obtained. The results shown have mainly been obtained by studying the parameters affecting the electro-reductive stripping of a D2EHPA loaded organic phase in a batch reactor. From an iron (IH)-saturated 20 vol. % D2EHPA solvent containing ~ 12.5 g/1 Fe (III) over 90% of the iron can be stripped in one stage with a 2 M H2SO4 solution at 50°C. It is shown that in this way it should be possible to obtain a concentrated ferrous sulphate solution which can be processed downstream to recover a pure iron product.

Growing environmental and occupational safety concerns about the use of cyanide in gold processing has increased the interest in more acceptable alternatives. The most likely of these is thiosulfate. However, the thiosulfate process lacks a proven in-pulp method of recovering the dissolved gold, because activated carbon is not effective for the absorption of the gold thiosulfate complex .. Anion exchange resins do offer a possible route for in-pulp recovery. This paper describes work aimed at the evaluation of the effectiveness of commercially available anion exchange resins for the recovery of gold from thiosulfate leach liquors? and pulps. It has been found that strong-base resins are superior to weak-base resins in that they have a larger capacity, which assists in reducing the competition from other anions within a leach solution. Further studies with a selected commercial strong-base resin have shown that competing polythionateanions (particularly tri-and tetrathionate). Lower the maximum possible gold loading but that gold is selectively recovered over other base metal anions in solution. Kinetic experiments found that while? competilig anibns did not affect the initial rate? of gold loading it was important to minimise the contact time of the resin in solution so to prevent displacement of loaded gold by competing anions over longer times. A small-scale resin-in-pulp plant investigation showed gold can be recovered from a leach pulp by a strong-base resin to yield gold loadings of 3000 mg/L, barren pulp containing less than 0.05 mg/L of dissolved gold and. copper loadings of 500 mg/L. Loaded copper was displaced gold and at a loading of 2000 mg/L gold the copper loading was minimal «500 mg/L). The resin was found to recover gold adsorbed on the solids that would, otherwise have. reported to tails if a solid/liquid separation method were used. A patented two-step elution process in which copper and then gold are separately eluted from the resin is also discussed.
