Major components of soil were tested for their ability to attenuate cyanide. Feldspar, kaolinite, plagioclase and bauxite are found to degrade cyanide at an appreciable amount mainly through adsorption. A soil near a mining site in northern Nevada was studied in detail using a tall column. Many species of cyanide were anlyzed to determine the mechanisms of the reactions of cyanide with soil. Volatilization, adsorption, oxidation, precipitation and complexing were quantitatively identified, being 5 to 10, 11.7, 4.2, 7.3 and 4 per cent of the total cyanide added, respectively. It is found that the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate is due to the catalytic effect of nickel and copper leached from the soil. Precipitation of metal-cyanide complexes occurred at low pH values.

Titanium with up to 7.5 pct Al forms single-phase a alloys that are work hardening, not heat treatable, and ductile as welded. The high aluminum Y phase alloys are not usefully ductile, despite their low hardness, but they have excellent oxidation resistance and hot hardness. LITTLE has been published on the effect of aluminum on the mechanical properties of titanium, despite the fact that two of the first four commercial alloys released by titanium alloy producers contained aluminum as an important alloying ingredient. These were both a-ß type alloys, one containing 4 pct A1 and 4 pct Mn and the other containing 3 pct A1 and 5 pct Cr. However, neither of these alloys reflects the true alloying nature of aluminum, since each contains important amounts of the ß-stabilizing addition, manganese or chromium. In a previous publication on the constitution of Ti-A1 alloys,' the authors showed that aluminum had a high solubility in a titanium and was strongly a stabilizing in nature. About 25 wt pct A1 is soluble in a titanium at room temperature. With as little as 5 pct added aluminum, the a transus temperature is increased from 882" to 970°C, and the correspond- ing ß transus to 995°C. The first intermediate phase in the Ti-A1 system is the ordered face-centered tetragonal TiAl phase, which extends from 34 to 46 wt pct Al. The present paper presents hardness data over the entire titanium-rich region of the system, through the TiAl phase, and mechanical property data on the alloy range capable of being fabricated. Methods of Investigation The materials used and general preparation of alloys, as well as experimental techniques used in the investigation of Ti-A1 alloys, have been adequately described.' Briefly, the preparation consisted of arc-melting the desired amount of high purity aluminum (99.99 pct purity) and iodide titanium (maximum hardness 100 Vickers, as deposited) together on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial pressure of argon. The resulting button ingot was of such form that it could be fabricated without further treatment. All work was done using ingots weighing 10 to 15 g, which were hot-rolled to strip form whenever possible. THE mathematical analysis of diffusion curves in solid metals is Carried out ordinarily by analogy with the flow of heat in a continuous medium and no account is taken of the fact that the materials involved are composed of discrete particles that move discrete distances at irregular intervals. It is possible to treat the problem on the basis of simple assumed atomic mechanisms, in which case, because of the small scale of the elementary process compared to the gross effects observed experimentally, the two procedures lead to the same expression for the variation of concentration with distance. Thus, for engineering purposes, the usual methods are quite satisfactory. If, on the other hand, our purpose is to go beyond the mere collection of data, however desirable this may be, it is necessary to recognize and understand the factors that are of fundamental importance. One factor that has not hitherto been considered when dealing with solid metals is the difference in atomic weights of the isotopes of a single metal. While all the atoms of a given element are alike chemically, their weights may vary by a small but significant amount, and atoms of different weights may have different diffusion rates. With gases this variation in isotopic weight produces a change in the rate of diffusion by a factor inversely proportional to the square root of mass. While, except for the lightest gases, this is not a large effect, it is, for example, sufficient to permit a considerable concentration of one isotope at the expense of others. If metals exhibit a similar phenomenon, some modification of the analysis of the diffusion process will be required, since the different isotopes of a given metal will have different probabilities of moving and the heat-flow analogy will contain a fundamental error. This situation cannot be rectified by using a diffusion coefficient based on the average probability of moving, and it can be shown that even when the diffusion coefficient is independent of composition, the diffusion curve will not agree with the simple theory except in the rare cases where only one isotope exists; e.g., gold. If, however, the mass effect in the solid state were no larger than in the gaseous, the errors arising therefrom in the analysis of ordinary diffusion curves would be quite negligible. Nevertheless, our desire to obtain all possible information concerning the details of the diffusion process, and the possibility of diffusion in the solid state as a means for separating isotopes are cogent reasons for undertaking an experimental study to determine whether isotopes of different masses diffuse at different rates. Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure. "Laser assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is a new containerless fiber process whereby growth of small diameter fibers or microstructures (microsprings, microsolenoids) occurs directly from the vapor phase. The laser beam has a focal point adjusted to coincide with the tip of the growing fiber inside the reaction chamber. Since the growing fiber is not in contact with reactor walls or foreign materials, it is chemically pure, and suitable for optical uses and uses requiring high structural uniformity. Continuous fibers and multifilament yams are possible. The use -of high reaction chamber pressures (1-10 bar) and a small wavelength Nd-YAG laser made it possible to fabricate small diameter fibers at growth rates >1 mm/s. This paper describes the synthesis of single crystal, polycrystalline and amorphous fibers by LCVD, and provides a comprehensive analysis of phase transformations occurring during their fabrication.IntroductionLaser assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is a new containerless fiber process [1-10] whereby growth of small diameter fibers or microstructures occurs directly from the vapor phase. The Castle Dome copper deposit is of the porphyry type and occurs in a body of quartz monzonite intruded into the pre-Cambrian formations and possibly into the lower part of Paleozoic limestones. The hypogene sulphide minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, and a little molybdenite, sphalerite, and galena. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are disseminated or occur in small closely spaced veins. The hypogene mineralization shows distinct zoning in the distribution of pyrite and chalcopyrite, so that the mineralized area can be subdivided into pyritc and chalcopyrite zones. Supergene enrichment, though not extensive, played an important part in the formation of the ore body, the chalcopyritc zone being the pro-tore. Several thin, gently dipping, diabase sills occur in the mineralized area, and the copper content of the rock in and near these sills is substantially higher than average. The formation of the ore body was caused by the combined effects of three forces: I. Zoning of the hypogene mineralization, 2. Richer copper metallization associated with the diabase sills, and 3. Supergene enrichment. Introduction The Castle Dome copper deposit is about 5 miles west of Miami, Arizona, and about 3 miles west of the Miami-Inspiration ore body. The Castle Dome open-pit mine is on the south flank of Porphyry Mountain, a prominent landmark of the region. In 1941 the deposit was being explored by the Miami Copper Co., but the exploration program was cut short when the decision was made to develop the property as a war project. The Castle Dome Copper Co., Inc., was organized as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Miami Copper Co., and arrangements were made with Defense Plant Corp. for developing and equipping the mine and for construction of a concentrating plant. Construction and development work was begun in January 1942, and milling operations started June so, 1943. Since that date, the mine has been in continuous operation by the Castle Dome Copper Co, under a lease agreement with Defense Plant Corp. producing copper at an average rate of 4,000,000 lb per month. To January I, 1946 the total production amounted to 121,088,000 lb of copper,4,271 oz of gold, and 211,755 oz of silver. A detailed study of the copper deposit and the surrounding area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey in June 1943. Other members of the Survey participating in the work were C. M. Gilbert, G. L. Quick, and J. P. Albers. The results of this work will be published as a comprehensive report by the Geological Survey. Os revestimentos protetores, além de constituírem uma importante forma de prevenção à corrosão metálica, principalmente a atmosférica pode melhorar consideravelmente as propriedades físico-químicas. A eletrodeposição representa um método alternativo para revestimentos de superfície metálica e tem a finalidade de inibir a corrosão, que ocorre na superfície do metal sob a influência do meio ambiente. A liga de Co-W tem gerado considerável interesse devido a sua resistência ao desgaste e a corrosão. No processo de eletrodeposição do tungstênio não podem ser reduzidos completamente ao estado de valência zero em meio aquoso, mas é possível depositá-los na presença dos elementos do grupo do ferro. O presente trabalho propõe avaliar a influência do agente complexante tartarato de sódio no processo de obtenção da liga Co-W. Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado à metodologia de superfície de resposta. As medidas eletroquímicas de corrosão foram executadas em uma célula convencional de três eletrodos. Foram utilizadas as mediadas de polarização potenciodinâmicos linear. Foi avaliada a composição química das ligas pelo EDX e a morfologia da superfície com o MEV. O melhor resultado de eletrodeposição para a liga Co-W foi obtido com concentrações sulfato de cobalto 0.2 M, tartarato de sódio 0.3 M e tungstato de sódio 0.05 M e apresentou morfologia nodular com conteúdos de tungstênio de 38% e cobalto de 62% e uma boa resistência a corrosão.

Hibbing Taconite Company is located by the cities of Hibbing and chisholm near the center of the Mesabi Range, approximately 169 km (105 miles) from the Canadian Border. The plant site is equidistant from these two communities, about 6.4 km (4 miles) from each. A 169 km (105 mile) railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where the pellet production is loaded into lake carriers for lower lakes destinations. Immediately to the south of the mine area is the world famous Hull- Rust-Mahoning Mine which produced more than 700 000 000 million tons of red ore between the years 1893 and 1973.

Discussion of the paper of L. D. RICKETTS, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 711 to 737. FREDERICK LAIST, Anaconda, Mont.-I am going to tell you of some of the results we have been getting in Anaconda during the past two or three months in a large plant which was finished in May. We commenced work in Anaconda a year and a half ago on the construction of a leaching plant which was to have a capacity of 2,000 tons per day. The plant was to treat tailings from the concentrator, containing about 12 1b. of copper to the ton. During the past year we changed our plans and decided to use the flotation process on the tailings from the concentrator, which contained no oxidized copper, and apply the leaching process only to tailings which had accumulated in a large dump below the works. This dump contains about 15,000,000 tons of tailings, and since some of the copper in it is oxidized, we felt that the application of the flotation process would result in the loss of too much of the oxidized copper, particularly as time went on. In starting up we had a number of difficulties to overcome, as is usually the case. They were not of a serious character. The results obtained, so far, have been decidedly encouraging. During July the plant treated a total of 50,000 tons of tailings, or an average of 1,610 tons per clay. The extraction was about 83 per cent., which, on material of the grade treated, meant a. tailing assaying under 0.1 per cent. copper. The acid consumption was about 65 lb. per ton, and the fuel percentage in. roasting was about 4 ¼ . We expect to cut the fuel percentage in the next month or two to about 3 per cent., the high percentage during July being clue to starting up and shutting clown furnaces. We find that iron builds up in the solution to a marked degree. This is not a serious platter with us, because we have cheap sulphuric acid and can reject solution whenever it gets too foul. The extraction of silver has been remarkably good in the large plant. It has averaged better than 75 per cent. It seems that so long as we maintain salt in the solution to a percentage of 10 per cent., the extraction is good. We allowed the salt to fall off in order to find how low a percentage we could use. At about 7 per cent. the silver extraction fell to 65 per cent. This was to be expected, because silver chloride is soluble in strong brine, but not in weak brine.

The copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula in northern Michigan have long been of interest in connection with deep earth-temperature measurements. The extraordinary low geothermal gradient of l° F. in 223.7 ft. announced by Agassiz1 as a result of measurements dating from 1886, although later2 stated as in error, served to focus attention on this region as one offering, because of the great depth of the mines, unusual opportunity along this line. Lane,3 Van Orstrand4 and others have made valuable contributions to this study. Fresh opportunities afforded by the constant deepening of the mines, improvements in the accuracy and reliability of temperature-measuring instruments together with increasing knowledge of the heat conductivities and specific heats of the rocks, led the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in cooperation with some of the mining companies to renew work on this problem. It is planned eventually to complete a survey which will make use of the favorable opportunities for deep rock-temperature measurements presented in these mines. This survey should include the determination of a depth-temperature gradient in both conglomerate and arnygdaloid mines, and also the variations in temperature at the same depth in different geological formations. The first problem has a direct bearing on the question of providing equipment for necessary ventilation with increased depth. The second may show that a relation exists between the natural rock temperature and the mineral content of the formation. The measurements in all cases are to be guided by heat conduction considerations, to the end that they may represent as closely as possible

The paper introduced bio-oxidation plants of refractory gold concentrate in China and CCGRI cultures. CCGRI cultures are composed of bacteria and archaea. Archaea Ferroplasma acidiphilum is very thick and fills whole mineral surface. It plays a more dominant role in CCGRI process. Several years of practice has proved that the operating temperature in bioreactors between 38~52?,gold recovery is almost same. Pulp concentration has been increased each year and reached to 25%.

Part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines mission is to supply the U.S. mineral industries with information that is useful in planning to meet the Nation's critical and strategic mineral needs if a national emergency occurs. The Bureau conducted laboratory research including operating a nominal 100 lblh pilot plant to demonstrate the recovery and concentration of chromite by gravity and flotation operations from three northern California mineral deposits. Gravity beneficiation test results show that concentrates contained as much as 52 pet chromic oxide (CrZ03) with recoveries of about 80 pet. Results from the bench-scale unit operations of mineral liberation, tabling, vanning, spiraling, pinch sluice, work index, and thickener area determination tests are presented in this report.

"The meso-structure of real soil consists of numerous particles with different sizes, while the traditional reconstruction method of quartet structure generation set (QSGS) produce relatively uniform soil particles resulting in significant discrepancy between the actual structure and reconfiguration model. In order to remedy the deficiency, the QSGS is improved by considering the influence of porosity and autocorrelative function of soil, which make the models closer to the real soil. Based on the reconfiguration model, Lattice Boltzmann method is combined in the algorithm to conduct further simulation of fluid flow in soil pores. The D2Q9 model is applied to construct the two dimensional model for simulating mesoscopic seepage field of saturated soil by setting the non-equilibrium extrapolation scheme at the inlet and outlet boundary, and the bounce-back scheme at the soil particles boundary as well as the left and right boundary. According to the case study, the proposed program is realized to simulate mesoscopic seepage field of reconstructed soil with constant inlet seepage velocity. The results show that the seepage direction of soil is along the passage with good connectivity, therefore the permeability is controlled by these passages. The seepage velocity in such channels is faster than in bad connectivity channels. Even if the channel has larger pores, the seepage velocity is still small. INTRODUCTIONUnderstanding the seepage mechanism in porous materials is significant in both theoretical and engineering problems. As a typical porous media, soil consists of solid particles and voids, which form connected channels allowing water to flow through. Such seepage in soil exists widely among geotechnical project of slope, foundation pit, and tunnel, etc. Meanwhile, a number of engineering accidents are caused by limited knowledge of seepage characters in soil (Huang, 2006; Liu, 2013). The conventional method in describing seepage features mostly based on the parameter of permeability, which is a macro statistic mean evaluating the whole connectivity of soil. Obviously, this parameter cannot exactly reflect the details of how water flows through the inner soil structure, especially the flow velocity in local mesoscopic area, hence is unable to represent the actual seepage properties. Therefore, it is necessary to develop mesoscopic approaches to fully study the seepage mechanisms."

In 1774 a Swedish chemist, C. W. Schule, first recognized manganese as an element. That same year Schule's associate, J. G. Gahn, isolated the element manganese for the first time. In 1856 the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave birth to the economic importance of manganese. Later, in 1882, Robert Hadfield discovered high manganese steels. Although the primary use of manganese is in the ferroalloy industry, two additional important uses for manganese are making chemicals and dry cell batteries. Manganese is also vital to plant and animal life. Various chemical compounds of manganese are used in fertilizers, feeds, glass manufacture, paints, varnishes, and for numerous medicinal and chemical purposes. For the study of industrial minerals and rocks, only the chemical and battery grade material is of- concern, but for the sake of comparison, metallurgical aspects are included in this presentation. Although currently the world's largest consumer of manganese, the United States is producing only minor amounts of ore at the present time. This is due primarily to the fact that although huge deposits of manganese occur within our borders, all are of such low grade as to be economically unfeasible to mine. For many years various government agencies and segments of private industry have devoted sizable sums of money and time in an attempt to upgrade ores from the various deposits, and also in an attempt to recover manganese from blast furnace slags. In view of current world prices, and the quantity of high grade material available, there is little likelihood that any of these approaches will be found to be economically feasible in the near future. Geology and Mineralogy Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are predominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages. In general, it can be said that all primary deposits of manganese are carbonates or silicates. The most productive and profitable have been those of sedimentary origin and residual concentrations. Examples of these residual types of deposits are associated with the metamorphosed lodes of Madhya, Pradesh, India, and the lateritic deposits of Orissa and Bihar, India; nodules in the residual clays of the Philippine Islands, US southern Appalachians and Arkansas, Ghana, and Brazil. Sedimentary manganese deposits are best exemplified by the Nikopol district of Russia and the Tchiatouri area of Georgia, USSR. Hydrothermal replacements are characterized by the rhodochrosite deposits of Butte and Phillipsburg, MT. This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of 10 coal samples collected from the significant coal-producing mines of Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, and Wapello Counties in Iowa, with special emphasis on physical desulfurization. All 10 samples were of high sulfur content as received, ranging from 4.2 to 10.4 percent; the organic sulfur content ranged from 0.8 to 3.8 percent. The pyritic sulfur content of the samples could be appreciably reduced by crushing and washing and provided pyritic sulfur reductions ranging from 36 to 75 percent. Crushing to 3/8-inch top size and removing the sink 1.60 specific gravity material would provide float coal products containing 3.5 to 6.0 percent sulfur. However, these coals could be burned at utility plants utilizing SO2 removal processes with efficiencies ranging from 70 to 88 percent and still be in compliance with the current Federal SO2 emission regulations for stationary sources.

X-ray and thermoanalytical studies were carried out on the formation and stability of Ca-, Mg-and Mn-tungstate, and of the corresponding minerals scheelite and wolframite. The tungstates were synthesized by different methods: precipitation from solution, solid state reactions, displacement reactions with solutions and in the solid state. The reactivity of natural scheelite and wolframite with different salt solutions and in mixtures with other minerals was investigated.

"The creation of mine excavations alters the stress distribution in the surrounding rock mass. In modern mining, resin-grouted rockbolts are used as a means of support in order to redistribute stresses and reestablish equilibrium in the rock mass. The success of resin-grouted rockbolting depends on the design of the system and the correct installation of the support units.The support design and rockbolt installation procedure at a platinum mine in the Bushveld Complex were investigated. A number of issues that resulted in poor installation were identified, including resin admixture, incorrect length and orientation of support holes, over- or under-spinning of the resin, and incorrect rockbolt tensioning. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and its limitations identified. A number of recommendations were made for optimizing the support design by reducing the diameter of the drill bit and reducing the length of the support holes. These changes will enable the mine to use different combinations of resin capsules. Implementation of the proposed changes will lead to a significant reduction in the cost of installation per support hole, as well as improve productivity and safety.IntroductionThe creation of any mine excavation disturbs the virgin state of stress in the Earth’s crust. This results in stress concentrations that interfere with the stability of the rock mass surrounding the excavation. It is essential to modify the internal behaviour of the rock mass surrounding excavations in order to reinforce the ground and stabilize excavations. Resin-grouted rockbolts are extensively used for this purpose. Esterhuizen (2014) stated that when effectively installed, the rockbolt exerts a clamping force and a bonding strength that keeps the rock mass together. This increases the cohesive strength of all discontinuities in the rock mass and enhances the stability of the excavation. Poorly designed and installed ground support is ineffective and constitutes a safety hazard. It is therefore crucial for every mine to ensure that any form of ground support is designed and installed correctly. This research evaluates the installation of resign-grouted rockbolts and identifies challenges and solutions for improved safety as observed at an operating hard rock mine. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and the design parameters optimized. The outcomes will enhance the efficiency of support and minimize the costs associated with the installation of resingrouted rockbolts."
