The mining industry of Japan is not very large, but it is very old. Some of the mines have 1000 years of history. At Nara, the capitol 1300 years ago, the great Buddha of bronze that was cast at that time was of metal mined from several localities in Japan including the Akenobe-Ikuno district, one of the present Mitsubishi properties. Methods of smelting copper and iron, it is believed, came from China via Korea. A characteristic of the Japanese mining industry today is one of buying abroad and treating at home, a variety of ores of different compositions. All in all, Japan's mineral deposits under its own flag are inadequate for its great industrial strengths.

The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

DR. BANOWSKY: Thank you very much. That was the shortest introduction that I have had lately, and I didn't have time to get my coat on. But I appreciated it, and I'm delighted to be here with an industry with which 1 feel strong affinity. At the University of Oklahoma we have an energy history. We are a little more currently involved in oil and gas, and those of you who know the history of our state would be aware we have an early coal development back really before the turn of the century in the southeast part of our state what we call Little Dixie. How many of you have spent anytime in Oklahoma or are from the state of Oklahoma? I'm not going to ask how many are from OSU or the University of Colorado. We did send you a football coach here from Oklahoma, and 1 see you have exchanged him. Several of you were only interested in the lobby in asking about our football team this year. 1 would like to go somewhere where we can talk about something besides football. I'm just trying to build a University that our football team can be proud of. We're going to be strong again. 1 can assure you. We've got the best football team money can buy. It's not quite as bad as the college president who called the coach in and said, "Coach we're in trouble, you're losing games and the alumni is very unhappy." "What can we do?" the president asked. The coach said, "Well the football team is flunking the admissions test. We can't get them in with the standard achievement and SAT tests." The president said, "What can we do?" The coach said, "Well the coaching staff has substituted for the American College Test the simple fill in the blank questionnaire." The president said, "Let's use it. We have got to get the team in." The first question was, Old MacDonald had a (-). And a couple of the big tackles were taking it and one of them said, "Hey, what did Old MacDonald have?" His friend said, "Stupid, Old MacDonald had a farm." "Well how do you spell farm?" He said, "Stupid, e i e i 0." Now the gentleman who met me at the registration line from Lakewood, Colorado, was asking me about one of our great big tackles; and he is doing well. We call him Doctor Death; he is also a wrestler and that gentleman said, "1 don't know how bright he is." 1 said, "He is bright enough for our academic tutoring that he is going to get through all right." So I'm delighted to see you and be here with my very dear friend, Carl Terzian. Carl and 1 were in Los Angeles together for 10 or 12 years when I was president of Pepperdine University. He and I are exactly the same age. Born in 1935 and 1 a month or two later in 1936. Fewer children were born in that period than in any other period of time in this century. For those of you who remember anything about that period, you will know why no one was having babies during that period. But Carl called and said, "Bill do you know where Vail, Colorado is?" Well when you live in Oklahoma, you learn where Colorado is in a hurry. 1 not only know this beautiful area, but have made too much of an investment here at a place called Beaver Creek. The real estate is cheap over there. 1 play regularly in the Gerald Ford Invitational Golf Tournament here. Hope you will visit Beaver Creek. It's just 10- 12 miles to the west. The sight of the 1976 winter olympics until the people of Colorado voted them out. And now Vail Associates and I are good Oklahoma families. Bass family, Harry Bass of course, many of you know this story, who is chairman of the Board of Vail Associates, is making quite an investment in that year-round resort area. Interesting data on electric blasting and sinking of the Montreal No. 5 shaft of the Montreal Mining Co., Montreal, Wis., were obtained during the sinking of the last 877 feet of this shaft. Several unusual features and safety practices are also to be found in the Montreal mine. The Montreal shaft was sunk 2,156 feet from August 16, 1921, to May 1, 1924, and 877 feet from October, 1927, to June, 1928. The first section of the shaft was supported with steel sets spaced 5 feet on centers; and instead of lagging the walls were covered with three-eighths of an inch of gunite where Greenstone was encountered, and where quartz-slate was found (from the surface to the 12th level) the walls were lagged with tamarack lath treated with carbolineum, a preservative.

Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

This growth rate exceeds any value previol~sly reported for the vapor phase growth of Gap. In pure material, mObilities ns high as 175 sq cm per U-sec at room tenzperature and 1450 sq cm per v-sec at 77°K have been obtained. These values are anLong the highest that have been attai)led for this material. For the first time, Gap possesses a number of important properties which make it well-suited for use in electro-optic modulators. First, the transverse electro-optic effect is operable in this material, which makes it possible to increase the path length of the modulated iron doping of Gap has been achieved; this results i?z resistivities of approximately 10" ohm-cm. The problelrls of residual strain and isolated shorting paths in these crystals have been partially solved. Electro-optic modulation of visible radiation has been demonstrated with this material. It is anticipated that further improvement with regard to the probleins of strain and shorting paths will result in a practical Gap electro-optic modulator. radiation without increasing the applied voltage. In addition, this permits the use of thin crystals so that relatively small voltages are needed to provide the requisite high electric fields. The frustration encountered by exploration crews in connection with land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. Figure I shows a rather common, situation. The combinations of ingredients are almost limitless and the resulting brew is often poisonous to an exploration man. A single step, that of taking a series of deep soil samples is often delayed until some sense can be made from "floating" unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position, placer claims overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans, and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims with¬out monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate pre-existing claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights. The picture is familiar to exploration men. One approach to such problems is to ignore them until someone voices an objection -- but then an even more chaotic situation is likely to develop. Another practice is to stake new claims to cover all ground that is "open" at first glance and then find out if there are conflicts so that the new claims can be adjusted accordingly.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. In Italy at the moment there is a program which involves for the future the exploitation of two uranium mines which are now in the research stage. About one hundred and fifty workers are at present employed in those facilities. An health physics surveillance program is under way and has been designed to fulfill the requirements due to the future exploitation of the two mines. A complete evaluation of the total dose (external + internal) received by the workers will be given together with a detailed analyses of the technical methods employed for such evaluations. The external doses are evaluated on the basis of individual TLD dosimeters, while the evaluation of the internal doses is mainly due to an enviromental survillance program of the radon and radon daughter air concentration inside the mines. The criteria established for the assessment of the sampling procedures, sampling intervals and dose evaluation related to the radon doughter exposure are reported. The external dose received by the workers are lower than 0.2 m Sv~month and the internal exposure less than 6.4 IO-3 J.h.m-3 /year or using the old units 2 WLM/year.

Commercial stress -relieved TD Nickel bar was shown to retain room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength after exposure up to 2501°F. Cold swaging increased both room -temperature and 2000°F tensile strength. After annealing at 2500°F the strengthening due to swaging was retained at 2000°F hilt eliminated at room temperature. Annealing produced changes in hardness and X-ray half peak width indicating the presence of recovery processes as 1071° as 1000°F but no recrystallization of swaged material was noted at any temperature. In contrast to swaging, rolling induced a recrystal-lized structure after annealing. The tensile strength of this recrystallized structure was comparable to the cold-worked condition. High-temperature tensile properties of as -received bar were highly anisotropic with the transverse tensile strength being one fifth the longitudinal value. The aniso-/ropy is affected by working direction and may he partially reversed by changing the direction of metal flow. The divergence in tensile strength, beginning above 550°F or- approximate one third the absolute melting point, is strain-rate dependent. T D Nickel is a commercial dispersion-hardened alloy containing 2 vol pct thoria. The dispersion, consisting of spherical particles 0.030 to 0.050 in diameter with an interparticle spacing of less than 1 is reported to maintain stable properties up to 2400°F.1 This stability of second phase results in maintenance of elevated-temperature strength at higher temperatures and longer times than normal nickel-base superalloys.2 The purpose of this paper is to describe the effect of various mechanical working operations on the strength and microstructural stability of TD Nickel bar. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES All material used in this study was commercial TD Nickel bar. This material is produced by a chemical process which results in a nickel powder containing a dispersion of thoria particles. The powder is then pressed, sintered, extruded, and subsequently worked to bar stock. Three starting materials from three separate lots were used: as-extruded bar. 1-in.-diam stress-relieved bar, and 1/2-in.-diam stress-relieved bar. Since TD Nickel bar stock is cold-worked without a recrystalliza-tion anneal, the accumulated deformation or degree of cold work in these materials increases as the bar diameter decreases. Some of the 1/2-in.-diam bar was swaged to 1/4 in. diameter at room temperature in order to produce an as-worked condition for comparison with the stress-relieved stock. Tensile testing was performed on an Instron Tensile Tester at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. The 0.2 pct offset yield strength was measured from the load-crosshead movement plot. Specimen gage dimensions were 0.080 in. in diameter by 0.40 in. in length, producing a strain rate of approximately 0.050 min-1. Specimens were tested in air and heated within a resistance-wound furnace controlled to ±5°F. A 15-min soak at temperature was employed before testing. Samples were heat-treated in air and specimens machined after exposure with sufficient material removed to eliminate any surface contamination. X-ray line breadth was determined from a diffractometer scan of a transverse face of a bar using copper K, radiation. Metallographic preparation utilized standard mechanical polishing with Carapella's etch. Specimens for electron microscopy were electropolished in a 1:7 sulfuric/methaol solution and chromium-shadowed collodion replicas prepared. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION I) Effect of Elevated-Temperature Exposure on the properties of TD Nickel. The effect of various elevated-temperature exposures on the room-temperature tensile strength of TD Nickel is shown in Table I. In the unexposed condition the tensile strength, reduction in area, and hardness all increase with increasing accumulated deformation while the elongation decreases. After exposure at 2500°F the strength of all three materials decreases to about 65,000 psi and the elongations increase slightly. The apparent increase in strength of the 1-in. bar after a 2000°F treatment is probably experimental scatter. These results indicate that the room-temperature strengthening due to additional deformation is annealed out upon elevated-temperature exposure. In contrast to the room-temperature data, the 2000°F tensile strengths increase in order of increasing deformation even after exposure. The Bureau of Mines receives frequent requests for information on the treatment of mercury ores, but as its own and almost all other publications on mercury are out of print, the Bureau has prepared this circular on the metal for the prospector and operator of small mines and plants. Mercury, commonly though improperly termed ?quicksilver?, is the only common metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is used in the amalgamation of gold and silver, in power boilers, explosives, friction-less bearings, laboratory apparatus, lamps, medicine, paint, rectifiers, and for ?silvering.? The last mentioned is being superseded by silvering with silver. The use of mercury boilers may increase when they are thoroughly understood, but amalgamation is -being replaced to some extent by the use of corduroy and other collecting mediums, such as jigs and flotation cells.

With IIT research institute as a cosponsor, this seventh mineral waste Utilization Symposium was funded by the Bureau of Mines through its Division of Mineral Resources Technology. Environmental scientists and engineers from five countries (Canada, Netherlands, Austria, England, Guatemala) besides the United States participated in the symposium, which was held Oct. 20-21, 1980, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. Of the 25 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial waste, and scrap metal, 21 are summarized herein.

The geology of the Gulf Coast Salt domes has been extensively studied by Kupfer (1,2,3,4,5), Atwater (6,7), Balk (81, Hawkins (9), and Wharton (10). dominant geological feature of Southern Louisiana is the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The axis of this geosyncline corresponds with the present day coastline of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. This geosyncline has been continually subsiding since Cretaceous times and receiving large deltaic accumulations of sediments from Central North America. These accumulations progressively thicken toward the South. In the vicinity of the Coast, these sediments are reported to be about 40,000 feet thick. Another dominant feature of the region is the large number of salt domes scattered along the Gulf Coast (fig. 1). Typically, these domes are roughly cylindrical in shape, 1 to 5 miles in diameter, and extend to more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is hypothesized that these domes are derived from the thick Louann salt formation lying below the deltaic sediments. Due to its low specific gravity and buoyancy, the salt layer protruded upwards plastically and pierced the overlying strata. As a result of this upward flow, the adjacent strata are locally lifted upwards, creating excellent traps for petroleum accumulation.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a time-dependent mathematical model of radiative heating of bulkheads in mines. The model includes both reradiation from the duct (cylindrical) walls and direct radiation from the fire zone. Thermal loss into the wall of the duct and into the bulkhead is included. Both brick and wood bulkheads are considered. It is found that the heating rate of the system scales as the duct length-to-diameter ratio and the flame temperature. In particular, the time required for the irradiated surface of the bulkhead to reach a specified temperature decreases with increasing flame temperature for a fixed length-to-diameter ratio and increases with increasing length-to-diameter ratio for a specified flame temperature. It is also deter-mined that the time, T, for the bulkhead surface temperature to reach a specific value, Tb, for a fixed length-to-diameter ratio less than 4 and for a flame temperature of 1,200 K is approximately linearly dependent on Tb for 500 K < Tb < 700 K, and is nearly exponentially dependent on the length-to-diameter ratio for Tb = 600 and 700 K.

IN making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such important factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,1 E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by ¼ by ¾ -in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previous paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, ½ by 2 by 0.043 in., is blanked from a strip using a. die, and the weight, loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 ½ hr. of actual sub-mersion of the test piece in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300° F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. The "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

Fleet management systems (FMSs) as the pivotal part of any surface mining operation find it essential to evolve from conventional into intelligent systems because of both Mining 4.0 requirements and some shortcomings inherent in conventional methods. However, this novel transformation needs to be investigated technically and strategically. To this end, the previously published research works on intelligent FMSs are explored to track the latest status of these third generation frameworks within the surface mining context. Following that, their underlying models are compared in terms of five categories of allocation and dispatching features to pinpoint the technical gaps ignored. Having drawn the future lines of research, the present article then leverages the popular SWOT analysis method to outline the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with the advent of these intelligent FMSs in mines of future. By and large, the analysis indicates that advantages outweigh disadvantages. Solutions are offered to address the existing weaknesses and threats.

 The amount of energy required to support a unit volume of industrial production appears to depend on the volume of industrial production, effi- ciency of utilization of fuel, the form of energy used, climate, and popula- tion served. Previous to the first World War, industries of the United States were learning how to use the vast resources of energy that were available. From 1895 to 1900 the total amount of energy produced was equivalent to 3.7 tons of 13,100 B.t.u. coal per capita, but from that period until 1920 the energy used increased steadily until it reached an average of 7.7 tons per capita. Since that time the amount used has fluctuated with business con- ditions and has averaged 6.9 tons per capita.

Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.
