The pneumatic conveying of relatively large abrasive materials by dilute-phase conveying techniques has been applied in the underground mining industry for many years especially for backfilling mines and the hoisting of ore, coal, or rock out of the mines. The technique was extensively used in Europe, especially Germany and Britain for backfilling coal mines with rejects from the coal cleaning plants which not only helped to reduce environmental problems on the surface, but offered support to the overlaying strata in the deep underground mines, Similar techniques are being employed in the U.S.A. especially in uranium mines for the disposal of tailings, the main purpose being to extract a larger percentage of the ore from the pillars especially under weak roof conditions. Other than for the backfilling of abandoned mine entries, pneumatic conveying has not been applied in the mining industry in surface applications. In this paper, some consideration is given to three applications for open pit mining which may prove beneficial, namely hoisting coal up the high wall, sealing off auger holes, and stabilizing the high wall when being undercut by a longwall system.

Conventional casting at low pouring temperature was employed to produce semisolid metal, SSM, billets of A356 Alloy. The deformation behavior of the as-cast SSM billets was studied using parallel plate compression viscometry. The compression tests were carried out at different applied pressures, and fractions solid. The rheological studies were conducted assuming the SSM slurry behaving like Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids respectively. The Summitville Au-Ag-Cu district in the southeastern part of the San Juan volcanic field has been a major gold producer in Colorado. Mineralization is hosted by the composite South Mountain quartz latite porphyry volcanic dome, which is believed to have been localized by the intersection of the northwest margin of the Platoro-Summitville caldera complex and the northwest-trending Platoro fracture zone. K-Ar age dates indicate that alteration and mineralization were nearly contemporaneous with emplacement of the dome at 23-20 m.y. ago, 6-7 m.y. after collapse of the Platoroo-Summitville caldera complex. The dome consists of at least four major phases including strongly altered quartz latite porphyry; a late-mineral, coarse-grained sanidine quartz latite porphyry; and postmineral quartz latite dikes. The dome was emplaced into intracaldera rhyodacite and andesite. Gold-silver-copper mineralization is concentrated near the top of the dome and is associated with pods, pipes and steeply dipping tabular zones of silicification and advanced argillic alteration. Alteration is zoned outwards from the center of mineralization through argillically and propylitically altered rocks, and is largely confined to the area of the dome. Trace element geochemical patterns for the deposit indicate a central zone of anomalous As-Au-Pb-Ag and low Mn within an exterior zone of anomalous Ag-Au-Pb-Hg and high Mn. The chief ore mineral is native gold which is associated with goethitic iron oxide in the oxide zone. In the sulfide zone, native gold is associated with copper sulfide-sulfosalt mineralization. A genetic model for the Summitville deposit is based on recent models of modern geothermal systems, with which it shows similarities in alteration, ore mineralogy, zoning, and structural patterns.

SINCE our last meeting, the Institute has lost, by the death of Mr. Gowen, one of its most distinguished members. I shall only attempt in this place to give a brief account of his many accomplishments and achievements; but our records would certainly be incomplete without a recognition of the important influence which he exerted upon the mining and metallurgical industries of this country, and a testimony to his private virtues of character. Although Mr. Gowen was best known as a great lawyer and as the head of a great railway corporation, he began his career, before he was of age, as the manager of a small anthracite blast-furnace at Shamokin, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He left this position, to engage on his own account in the mining of anthracite coal at Mt. Laffee, near Pottsville. This proved an unprofitable business, and, after the panic of 1857, he began the study of the law. As soon as he was admitted to the bar, he at once entered upon the active practice of his profession, and soon achieved an extraordinary success. In 1869 he was made President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, and he afterwards organized the Pliladelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, the largest coalmining corporation in the world. He became a member of. this Institute during the first year after its organization, and remained a member until his death. He always took a deep interest in the work, and was prompt to co-operate by all means in his power in furthering the objects of the Institute. Abstract, Syngenetic uranium in pre metamorphic Idaho Springs volcanics and sediments probably, was mobilized during metamorphism (1.7 b.y.) and partly retained along unconformities. Precambrian Silver Plume intrusives (1.4 b.y.) and Pikes Peak granite (1.0 b.y.) may have mobilized uranium from the craton and. Idaho Springs metamorphics to concentrate it in cauldron sites in migmatites, pegmatites, alaskite, disseminations and greissen. Tertiary intrusives also may have upgraded uranium by anatexis, leaching and differentiation. Tertiary vein and shear zone uranium mineralization may have-been-derived from underlying magma sources, leached from Idaho Springs metamorphics and from syngenetic leaching of overlying sediments and introduced by deep hydrothermal convection systems.

We have designed a high-temperature Raman micro-furnace and cell that is suited for the electrochemical process study of the NO3 − in molten NaNO3– KNO3 (fraction of NaNO3 50 wt%) salt. During the cycle voltammetry and constant potential electrolysis process, the Raman laser beam was focused near the electrode; subsequently, the Raman spectra are obtained and the reduction process of NO3 − is analyzed. In the CV cathodic scan process, the new peak attributed to the ν1 mode of NO2 − emerges, and the peaks assigned to superoxide ions (O2 −) and peroxide ions (O2 2−) are not found. In the constant electrolysis process, the peaks at 1130 and 800 cm−1 appear when the potentials are between −2.0 V and −3.2 V (vs. Pt). The results show that when the NO3 − is reduced in molten the NaNO3–KNO3 mixtures, the reduction product O2− cannot stably exist, and O2− will react with NO3 − to form of superoxide ions (O2 −) and peroxide ions (O2 2−).

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the loca.ion of holes, drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

ANYTHING that may be said about "too much coal" must seem rather incongruous just at this time when two-thirds of the mines in the United States have been idle for nearly four months and a temporary coal shortage looms as more and more of a possibility. It is the purpose of this article, however, to deal primarily with the fundamental ills of the bituminous-coal industry, which, when summed up, can be expressed in one word-overdevelopment. During recent years the bituminous-coal industry in the United States has been seldom, almost never, in a state of normal business health with production run-ning evenly, prices steady and the market absorbing the output from week to week. There has been either a condition of feverish activity or apathetic sluggish-ness. We have had, for example, the intense strain on production during the war years with heatless days and lightless nights, followed by the slump late in 1918 which lasted through the greater part of 1919 when coal was a drug on the market. Then came the panicky demand of 1920. Competitive buying forced prices up to the highest levels in history. This demand in turn fell off suddenly in November, 1920, and the market remained apparently paralyzed all through 1921. During the latter year, lack of buying forced intermit-tent suspension of mining in all fields and prices averaged less than actual cost of production.

"IntroductionHistoricalCyanidation is a leaching process, in world-wide use, to extract gold (and silver) from ores and concentrates. The process has many inherent advantages on account of its adaptability:a. to any scale of operation;b. to a wide range of ore types and mineral associations;c. to a wide range of physical characteristics of the gold particle size, alloy (electrum) or mineral (telluride);d. to relatively simple plant controls and operating procedures;e. to simple marketing procedures and quick cash return.The basic idea for cyanidation was first described and patented by a German chemist, L. Elsner, in 1846. Some forty years later, J.S. McArthur, a metallurgical chemist and R.W. and W. Forrest, medical doctors, all of Glasgow, Scotland, came to realize the import of the discovery and accordingly, registered patents in Great Britain in 1887 and in the United States in 1889. The keystone of the McArthur-Forrest patent registration was the use of weak (0.05o/o) instead of strong (1.0%) solution.The years 1890-1910 saw much progress in equipment design and the advance from batch to continuous processing to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.In later years, technological progress followed advances in materials of construction and control systems. Current innovations include large-scale equipment, high-capacity thickeners, belt type filters and Steller, candle-type filters for plants using zinc dust precipitation. As well, environmental protection is increasingly a major concern.The technology of gold adsorption from cyanide solution onto activated carbon has made rapid strides in recent years. This has followed the initial efforts of Potter, Salisbury, Zadra and their colleagues of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Station in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the field work of Homestake Mining Company personnel, in Lead, South Dakota."

Although the solubility of oxygen in zinc electrolyte is less than 9 mg/L, the effect on deposit stability and zinc-dust consumption can be significant. Sodium sulfite is used to deoxygenate the electrolyte. The effect of the sodium-sulfite concentration on cobalt removal is investigated. The results show the reduction of sulfite to elemental sulfur that adhered to the zinc dust surface forming a passivating layer, and small amounts of sodium sulfite have no effect on cobalt removal. The optimum amount of sodium sulfite is 100 mg/L. It is an important consideration in purification circuits to use sodium sulfite as an additive to cobalt cementation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the potential availability of magnesium from 45 properties in market economy countries (MEC&apos;s). The 38 significant deposits evaluated have demonstrated resources of approximately 29 billion short tons (st) magnesium-bearing material containing 416 million short tons (MMst) magnesium oxide (MgO). Using data it gathered, the Bureau determined the magnesium production potential for each property including a 15-pct rate of return on invested capital. Total and annual availability assessments for the next 30 yr were completed for magnesium (Mg) metal, deadburned MgO, and caustic calcined MgO. At a January 1984 market price of $1.34/Ib Mg metal, the properties evaluated could economically produce an estimated 13 MMst Mg metal. At a market price of $400/st nonmetal magnesium product, these properties could economically produce 109 MMst deadburned MgO and 43 MMst caustic MgO. These properties could produce approximately 301,000 st Mg metal, 3.0 MMst deadburned MgO, and 430,000 st caustic MgO annually at current full production levels and 1984 market prices until at least the year 2000. Total 1984 MEC production assessed in this study was 153,000 st Mg metal and 4.3 MMst nonmetallic MgO products.

The Sapan Dalam coal deposit of Indonesia consists of ten steeply dipping seams with thicknesses varying between 0.1 and 3.5 m and split by shale, clay, silt and sandstone. The area contains four faults dipping about 75¦ with four to 85 m vertical displacements. The complex nature of the deposit coupled with limited 27 exploration drillholes at an average spacing of 200 m made it difficult to create a realistic geological model. A three-dimensional gridded seam model gave a fair representation of the deposit. Attempt to create an optimum pit using the WHITTLE 3D pit optimiser proved unsuccessful since the pit optimiser is restricted to standard regular or fixed blocks. The gridded seam model was converted to a fixed block model prior to the optimum pit design. Smoothing and pit base controlling were also introduced to obtain a smoother pit. A mining scenario produced 3.6 million tonnes of coal, 28.4 million bcm of waste and US$18.1 million revenue.

Removal of fluoride and chloride by alkaline washing from direct lead smelting dust which originated from an Ausmelt furnace is reported. The results show that the fluoride removal efficiency increases with an increase of alkaline concentration, alkaline washing temperature and time. The L/S ratio has little effect on fluoride and chloride removal efficiency. A new flow sheet for removal of fluoride and chloride from the dust was successfully proposed according to the results. Fluoride and chloride removal efficiencies are more than 53.68% and 63.18% respectively using the flow sheet under the optimum parameters of temperature 338 K, L/S ratio 3:1 and alkaline washing time of 1.5 h. The contents of fluoride and chloride in the alkaline washing residues can meet the standard of zinc purity as hydrometallurgical materials for zinc processing.

SCIARONE. M.Se. Eng. (Delft) (Visitor). There are basically two types of ferrosilicon powder available to operators of heavy-medium plants in South Africa spherical and milled grades. The production processes are described, and the properties of the two types are examined and compared. Guidelines are given for the selection of the correct grade of ferrosilicon for any particular application.

The Que River Mine is a small under-ground base and precious metals mine located in north-western Tasmania. Current production rate is 220,000 tonne/yr from reserves grading 0.37% copper, 7.1% lead, 12.2% zinc, 195 g/tonne silver and 3.4 g/tonne gold.Ore is mined using longhole open stoping techniques. Cemented fill is placed in primary stopes to permit safe and efficient recovery of pillars. The operation is trackless with both shaft and decline access from surface.Ore produced is trucked 40 km by road to be sold to the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Ltd., for treatment at their Rosebery concentrator.

About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. Bureau of Mines, E. A. Holbrook and W. W. Odell; Illinois Gas Association, C. W. Bradley and R. B. Harper; University of Illinois, Dean C. R. Richards, Prof. S. W. Parr, and Prof. H. H. "Electron spin resonance measurements provide evidence for the formation of long-lived Cr(V) intermediates in the reduction of Cr(Vl) by glutathione redtuctase in the presence of NADPH and for the hydroxyl radical formation during the glutathione reductase catalyzed reduction of Cr(Vl). Hydrogen peroxide suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Thus Cr(V) intermediates catalyze generation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide through a Fenton-like reaction. Thus the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity might involve the interaction between macromolecules and the hydroxyl radicals.C(Vl) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals (1-3). In contrast, most Cr(III) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic (1,4). Cr(VI) and Cr(III) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) , ions are rapidly transported across cellular membrane (1,4,5), while Cr[III) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents (!). Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(VI) ion is required for its reaction with DNA (1), the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(Vl) reduction has been the focus of current studies but the details are still not understood.Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(Vl) reduction include those on the reduction of Cr(VIJ by glutathione (GSH) .0,6-8), ascorbic acid (9), glucose (10), lactose (IO), galacturonic acid (11), microsome (12), and mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (13). These studies have shown that the Cr(VI) reduction involves the formation of Cr(V)-containing species which are often considered to be the toxic form of chromium. Thus far, however, no information is· available on the subsequent fate of those biologically formed Cr(V) species, in particular employing well defined biochemical systems. In this context, we report here our investigations of the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R). This enzyme was selected because it is ubiquitously present in cellular systems and it has been postulated to be involved in the Cr(VI) reduction (14-17) but the underlying mechanism has not been clarified. We find that the reduction proces·s involves not only Cr(V) but also ·OH radicals. We further investigate the reactivity of Cr(V) and find that it catalyzes generation of OH radical from H2O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. The role of ·OH in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity is suggested from this study."
