"The major importance of liners in grinding is their role in providing an appropriate trajectory for the charge. Since it is not possible to study the charge movement by direct observation in operating industrial mills, this task is accomplished by physical (laboratory), and/or, mathematical (software) methods. Because of the high cost and a longer time required for a physical analysis, mathematical simulations have become more common. Simulation of the effect of liner shape on the charge movement has provided a means to select a proper design based on the operational objectives and conditions. Furthermore, the liner shape changes due to wear and impact during operation, which will influence the charge trajectory. This adds more of an incentive to use simulation. These changes in liner could be predicted through liner profile measurements during operation and/or simulation. In this research, an inhouse developed DEM software called KMPCDEM © was used to simulate the charge movement in industrial plant SAG mills. A geometrical method of implementing the shell liners on SAG mills at the Sarcheshmeh (9.75×4.87 m) and the Gole-E-Ghohar (9×2.05 m) operations facilitated the software simulation. Point by point implementation of the measurements of liner profiles of these mills enabled the study to trend the change in the charge movement as the liners wear. Comparison of the simulation to a laboratory mill (1 m diameter) showed that the difference between the measured and predicted charge impact point, shoulder angle and toe angle were 6, 4 and 3°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the most energy intensive operation constituting the major portion of operating and capital costs of a mineral processing plant. This is a progress report for the period February 1, 1949, to August 15, 1949, covering experiments with lightweight shearing machines for developing thin, steeply pitching anthracite beds. The over-all objective at the time an underground test section was established on July 30, 1946, was to improve mining above the gangway by developing methods for mechanization of pitch mining. Following the preliminary cutting tests in the gangway with the German machines, it became evident that the use of machines of this type indicated advantages for development work that could not be overlooked and warranted investigation. An agreement was reached with the cooperating company that this be done. Thus, the objectivo in the period covered by this report has been to obtain operating data to uso in comparing hand and machine methods of driving development openings. In obtaining the machine-mining data, 78 feet of gangway, 108 feet of heading, and 80 foot of chute work were driven. Hand-mining data are authentic for the mining condition. It has been shown that full mechanization is two and one-half times as fast as conventional hand methods on a lineal-feet- advance-per-shift basis and costs but little more than one-third as much. Tho machines are air-powered; there is less shattering of the coal bed by blasting; water sprays are used to allay' dust; coal is loaded by machine; no rock is taken; timber is not dislodgod by heavy blasting charges; and it may be said, except for the development of a means for transporting timber to the face, that the tasks for the miner are less arduous, and the working face equally as safe, or safer, than in driving by hand. Face timbering remains the greatest time- consuming cycle item, and steps are being taken to correct this. More than 50 percent of the cycle time is now usod for face-timbering work.

Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

The need for dimensionally stable filled polymer composites has spurred the quest for materials that possess a negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Finding minerals and materials with a negative CTE large enough to counteract the substantial CTE found in polymers proves challenging. Much research has been per-formed over the last decade to uncover various materials that possess this unusual behavior. A list of materials that have demonstrated negative properties are discussed, as well as the experimental use of one such material (ZrW2O8), in a polymer matrix composite. The mechanical behavior of MgCu2 from 20 o to 725°C has been determined by "brittle-ring" tensite-test techniques, axial compression, and bending experiments. Compressive ductility begins at 450°C (0.65 T/Tm) and slowly increases with increasing temperature white the tensile ductility is characterized by an abrupt brittle-ductile transition at 600°C (0.8T/Tm). The compressive strength increases eightfold from room temperature to 400°C with a "normal" decrease as the temperature is further increased. The tensile strength goes through a rather abrupt threefold increase above 600°C with a subsequent decrease at higher temperatures. The slip system is (111)[110] and the twinning system is (111)[112]. At high temperatures MgCu2 is quite rate-sensitive, and dynamic yield points are observed that are extremely orientation-dependent. The high-temperature creep behavior under constant load is characterized by an increasing strain-rate with time. The general characteristics of the mechanical behavior make it possible to classify MgCu2 with those materials in which initial mobile dislocation density and the dislocation velocity-stress dependence are significant in determining mechanical response. Mgcu2 is the C15 prototype of the cubic Laves phase. Its range of homogeneity extends from 32.8 to 35.5 at. pct Mg at 500°C and narrows at lower temperatures. The lattice parameter is reported to vary from 7.02 to 7.05A,1 and the compound is completely ordered to the melting point of 819°C. MgCu2 has a brassy metallic appearance, is extremely brittle, and many of its physical properties are intermediate between those of the constituent elements: the electrical resistivity is 3.5 x 10-6 ohm-cm, Young's modulus is 10x 106 psi, the shear modulus is 6 x l06 psi, and the thermal coefficient of expansion is 18.7 x 10-6 cm per cm per "C from 20" to 250°C. Usually, properties of intermetallic compounds as functions of temperature have been determined by hardness, compression, or impact behavior, and almost all of these experiments have been performed on polycrystalline materials. Tammann and Dahl,2 for instance, determined the onset of ductility in a series of binary intermetallics by ball-hardness measurements and found the onset to range between 0.71 and 0.96 T/T,. Lowrie's3 investigations included some tensile properties, and he found ductility beginning around 0.65 T/Tm for most materials examined. His work did include some data on polycrystalline, nonstoichiometric MgCu2, however. "Global demand for the three platinum group metals (PGMs) Pt, Pd, and Rh has been steadily growing due to their widespread use in emission control, industrial catalysis, and numerous other applications. The primary supply of PGMs is currently the mining industry. However, legislative, operational, and environmental challenges faced by many mining operations result in erratic supply patterns and deficits for these three metals. Naturally, recycling scrap material to recover Pt, Pd, and Rh has therefore aroused research interest in the scientific and engineering communities. Given that the majority of the global demand for these three metals is driven by emission control devices, autocatalytic converters are therefore a significant source of already processed and beneficiated PGMs for recycling.Although pyrometallurgical processes dominate the recycling industry, hydrometallurgical processes may offer certain advantages, chief among these being lower emissions and reduced energy consumption. In this investigation, scrap converter material was leached in acidic chloride media and the leach liquor subjected to solvent extraction and cloud point extraction (CPE) to recover the PGMs. The recoveries for Pt and Pd using Alamine 308® dissolved in kerosene with decanol as a modifier were 95% and 81%, respectively. The maximum recoveries using CPE after complexation with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) in the presence of Triton X-100 and tin (II) chloride dihydrate as a reductant were 97% for Pd, 96% for Pt, and 91% for Rh. This demonstrates that CPE, although relatively new, may have some potential as a breakthrough PGM recovery technology. IntroductionPlatinum group metals (PGMs) have found a wide variety of applications in different industries due to their chemical, catalytic, and physical properties. PGMs are essential in automobile emission abatement, petroleum refining, and the pharmaceutical and electrical industries (Carabias-Martinez et al., 2000). However, the abundance of PGMs in the Earth’s crust is low and their primary sources are fast depleting (Crundwell et al., 2011).The high demand for PGMs, together with social, economic, environmental, and political aspects related to their production, has led to concerns about their future supply. This has resulted in renewed interest in recycling end-of-life material. PGM supply from recycling has doubled over the last decade, and currently contributes 22% to global supply (Johnson Matthey, 2016). This is in part due to the environmental, social, and operational challenges associated with mining of PGMs. For example, labour unrest, energy cuts, declining commodity prices, and declining ore grades have collectively made the mining landscape economically challenging (KPMG, 2015). On the other hand, the high content of PGMs in secondary sources makes their recovery from the increasing quantities of waste products important from a resource conservation viewpoint. Moreover, PGMs obtained through recycling have been demonstrated to have a 1% environmental cost from a life-cycle perspective, whereas PGMs obtained from mining contribute the remaining 99% of environmental cost (Bossi and Gediga, 2017). Sustainable resource recovery and the economic incentive of recycling have therefore been major drivers to justify investment in PGM recycling. The autocatalytic converter industry accounts for about 70% of the global consumption of these metals (Johnson Matthey, 2016) and therefore recycling spent converters has become a major source of Pt, Pd, and Rh (Figure 1)."

The fact that cobalt diffuses in silver at a much slower rate in a region near a free surface than in bulk material has been demonstrated in a variety of experiments. Various possible mechanisms of this near-surface effect (NSE) are examined in light of experimental evidences. The tendency for surface segregation of some solute atoms appears to be a likely mechanism to explain the effect. UNIDIRECTIONAL and isothermal diffusion from a plane source of radioactive tracer into an isotropic, homogeneous medium follows the Gaussian solution to Fick's second law, or: where A(x,t) is the position and time-dependent concentration of the diffusing species, M is the quantity of diffusant per unit area initially at x = 0, and D is the diffusion coefficient. For a given time, say t = tl, one can easily see that: d In Aixji)_____1_ r2] d(x2) 4Dti Thus, if diffusion data obtained by serial sectioning are plotted as In A(x,tl) vs x2, the diffusion coefficient is obtained from Eq. [2]. The ideal behavior seldom is observed in real systems. Deviations from ideality generally occur either at small or large values of penetration distance. The overall picture is shown schematically in Fig. 1 where Regions I, 11, and 111 are due, respectively, to some near-surface effect or effects (NSE), volume diffusion, and short-circuiting effects. For different systems and conditions of specimen preparation and analysis, the relative importance of Regions I, 11, and I11 may be drastically different. Region I is completely absent in many systems and there is no NSE. In others, however, there may be considerable difficulty in determination of volume diffusion coefficients due to the overshadowing influences of Region I. Such is particularly true when indirect techniques such as the surface concentration decrease or the Gruzin method' are used to find D. In this paper several experiments which had as their goal a better understanding of near-surface effects are reported. Specifically, it is well-known that unusual penetration behavior results for the diffusion of several impurities in ilver- and that considerable controversy exists with regard to interpretation of the published diffusion data. We chose to examine those unusual results which occur for cobalt diffusion in monocrystalline silver395 primarily because knowledge of experimental procedures and materials were readily available. Both radioactive co60 and co5' could be utilized to offer a wide range of available concentration of the diffusing species. Experiments were also performed on the diffusion of AgnO in silver. They gave base-line data for the system—both for technique evaluation and for examination of the vacancy distribution near the surface. I) PROCEDURES Cylindrical-shaped specimens 1.25 cm diam and 1 to 1.25 cm long were cut from 99.999 pct Ag single crystals obtained from Monocrystals Co., Cleveland. One end surface of each specimen was polished flat and etched with a mixture of 20 ml saturated Cr03 solu-tion-20 ml H20-3 ml concentrated HC1. Radioactive tracer (co60 or co5' or Ag'lO, each having a radio-chemical purity of greater than 99 pct) was deposited onto the prepared surface either dropwise with evaporation to dryness of the solution containing the tracer (0.5 N HC1 solution for the co60 and co5' and 0.6 N HNO3 solution for the A"'), by electroplating, or by evaporation from a tantalum or tungsten filament in an evacuated bell jar. The amount of deposited cobalt was varied from many atomic layers of cobalt containing the co60 to approximately one co5' atom per lo6 surface atoms of silver. This large variation in amount of deposited cobalt yielded information about both the influence of a thick-source layer of tracer and solubility effects on the NSE. THE data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. DRAGLINE VS. BUCKET-LINE Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 10¢ gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new, 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and with operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind. The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft. (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10¢ gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costing 4¢ per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ per cu. yd. An investigation was conducted on fine grained airon wire to measure the influence of the temperature of deformation on strain aging near room temperature. Specimens were deformed various amounts at 77°, 195°, or 273°K and aged. The strain aging was followed by either internal friction or return of the yield-point measurements. The results show that strain aging occurs in three stages. During the first stage there is small, almost immediate return of the yield point. The solute carbon concentration, as mesured by internal friction, remains constant in stage I but is lower than the concentration in the unstrained condition. In the second stage, the solute concentration decreases while the magnitude of the yield point increases. In the third stage, the solute atoms continue to drain from the solution, the yield point approaches a maximum, and the strain-hardening coefficient and flow curve increase. The kinetics of the strain aging reaction are not the same for the two sets of measurements since the internal friction results lag behind the yield-point measurements. However, the strain-aging kinetics measured at 44° and 64°C showed no effect due to the difference in initial deformation temperature; nor were the strain aging kinetics influenced by low-temperature anneals at 77°, 195°, and 273°K. 1 HE object of this investigation was to measure the effect of initial deformation temperature on the strain aging of a-iron by tensile tests (i.e., return of the yield point) and internal friction methods, to correlate the results of the two measuring methods, and to measure the effect of low-temperature annealing (<273°K) after low-temperature deformation upon strain aging. The experiments were performed on fine-grained a-iron wire containing 0.02 wt pct c.l According to Thomas and Leak,&apos; return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solid solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of the aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,3 during aging the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point on subsequent testing. It has been shown that after low-temperature neutron bombardment, a-iron goes through a stage of recovery at low temperatures which can be attributed to the annealing of iron interstitials&apos; and/or vacancies.4 If, after low-temperature deformation, there is an interaction during a low-temperature anneal between mobile point defects and the solute atoms (i.e., carbon atom interaction with vacancy or iron interstitial), it is possible that some solute atoms will be found at defect sites other than dislocations. Such changes in the sinks for the carbon atoms might be expected to alter the strain-aging kinetics sufficiently to be detected by either inter-

Pyrite depression in the flotation of copper ores is difficult due to the activation of Cu2+ ions on pyrite surface. In this study, the radical chain reaction involving the redox cycling of Cu(I/II) induced by sodium metabisulphite (MBS) was exploited to selectively depress the flotation of copper-activated pyrite at pH 8.0. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the presence of Cu2+ and O2 was essential to the formation of SO•− 5 through sulphite oxidation, the main entity to convert the activating species Cu(I)S on pyrite to Cu(II)-hydroxide/sulphate, causing deactivation of pyrite. The depression role ofMBS on pyrite flotation was closely associated with the type of grinding media which affected the electrochemical conditions of flotation. When forged steel was used as the grinding media, a high dosage of MBS was required to depress pyrite, but a low dosage of MBS could almost completely depressed pyrite when high chrome steel grinding media was used. This is because high chrome steel produced a stronger oxidation condition with a higher amount of Cu2+ and O2 which promoted the formation of SO•− 5

In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. The Bureau of Mines determined low-and high-temperature thermodynamic properties for anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate. Low-temperature heat capacities were measured between 50° and 298° K, and enthalpy increments above 298° K were determined. The high-temperature measurements of Fe2(S04)3 extended to 900° K and those of In2(S04)3 to about 1,000° K. A minor transition was found for Fe2(S04)3 at 800° K, with a heat of transition of 540 cal/mole. Tabulations were made of the low-temperature heat capacities and the high-temperature enthalpy and entropy increments. The 298° K entropies derived from the low-temperature measurements were 67.6±0.S ca1/deg mole for ferric sulfate and 72.2±O.5 cal/deg mole for indium sulfate. High-temperature enthalpy increments were also given in equation form.

Increased coal production on longwalls has brought with it higher levels of dust generation. Most U.S. longwall mining operators have difficulty complying with Federal dust standards, which are stricter than European standards. Longwall operators faced with a longwall that is "out of compliance" have implemented a variety of practices designed to reduce dust levels. Mining conditions and other important variables, however, can cause fluctuations in dust levels that may overshadow the performance of a new dust control technique. This can result in the continued use of an ineffective technique or lead to the abandonment of an effective dust control technique. No single technique can keep a longwall in compliance. Maintaining compliance requires a fundamental approach to dust control -- proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques.

The various methods based on solution models for obtaining free energies of mixing from miscibility-gap data have been applied to a number of binary-alloy systems. For nine of these systems there exist experimental thermodynamic data that permit a comparison of the results to experiment. It was found that the method of van der Toorn and Tiedema almost invariably leads to results that are physically unacceptable and that vary drastically with small changes in the miscibility-gap parameters. The subregular solution model is found in all cases, except the Al-Zn, Fe-Cr, and Cu-Pb systems, to exaggerate the free energy of mixing by 30 pct or more. The model developed by Lumsden is found to give results that are often in excellent agreement with experiment and which exaggerate the free energy of mixing by no more than 30 pct. These results and others give evidence that the Lumsden treatment of the effect of unequal atomic sizes and of imperfect configurational randomness due to deviations of AB bond energies from the mean of AA and BB bond energies is adequate for most systems. ANALYTIC expressions are frequently proposed for the dependence on composition of the activities of the components of a solution. Because the development of solution theory is incomplete, these expressions contain parameters which must be determined by experiment. The measurement of activities is often difficult and consequently such measurements are less readily available than are measurements of phase equilibria which, under certain conditions, can also be used to evaluate these parameters. For example, suppose it is known that two structurally dissimilar phases, each of known composition, in an n-com-ponent system are at equilibrium at a given temperature and pressure. n equations can be set up in terms of these parameters expressing the equality of the chemical potential of each component in the two phases. In addition, one can write the Gibbs-Duhem equation for each phase that also contains these parameters. Thus, if these n + 2 equations contain n + 2 parameters, these parameters can be determined (at the temperature in question) from the phase diagram alone. If the average number of parameters in each expression for the activity of a given component in a given phase is V then there will be 2nV parameters involved. Equating 2nV to n + 2 shows that, for n + 2, V = 1. If the temperature dependence of each parameter were to be expressed in some explicit form one could use equilibrium conditions at a number of temperatures to increase V. The situation is much improved when the two phases in equilibrium are structurally similar. It can then be assumed that, stably or metastably, two phases will become one at higher temperatures. Thus the number of parameters involved becomes nV instead of 2nV. Hence, V = 2 for n = 2 using only one temperature. (It is implied here that the activity expressions used are valid over the entire composition range.) In this investigation only the equilibrium of two structurally similar, two-component phases (miscibility-gap systems) will be considered. The various proposed solution models will be applied to a number of these systems and the results compared with available experimental results. All of the analytic expressions that have been proposed for the free energy of mixing of a two-component system are of the form where ?Gmix is the free energy of mixing per mole of solution, N1 and N2 are the mole fractions of components 1 and 2, respectively, and f(Ni, T) is some function of composition and temperature. In the "ideal" solution model f = 0. In the "regular" solution model f = a constant. Since these two models permit only a symmetric equilibrium diagram they will not be considered further here. The simplest model that permits a nonsymmetric miscibility envelope is the so-called "subregular" solution model proposed by Hardy.1 This model gives where the Ci(T) are functions of temperature only. The same expression for f is obtained from the "linear a function" model proposed by Darken and Gurry2 and applied to miscibility-gap systems by Wriedt.3 This model requires that the a function defined by be a linear function of composition (yi is the activity coefficient of component i). This model is not purely hypothetical for it has been found2 to hold true for a number of systems. It is readily shown3 that the f(Nl, T) obtained from this model is of the form given in Eq. [2]. It will be noted that the subregular solution model contains only two parameters and hence both of them can be determined at any desired temperature below the critical temperature, Tc, for a miscibility-gap systems in the manner described previously. Results of flotation process combined with atmospheric leaching and high pressure leaching for recovery of copper from low-grade silicate-copper ore have been presented in this study. The low-grade copper ore contains a small amount of copper (0.42 mass %), iron (4.6 mass %), and silicon (38.3 mass%) and among many other metals (Al, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Ti and S). The main mineralogical constituents of the copper ore are calcium aluminosilicate (Ca(Al2Si2O8), amesite (Mg2Al2SiO5(OH)4) and gypsum (CaSO4×H2O), and quartz (SiO2) as resulted from the alteration of an igneous rock. This study has shown that about 92 % of copper can be recovered with a maximum copper grade of 4.2 mass% in a froth after 15 minutes of flotation at pH 8.5 when used potassium amyl xanthate as a collector, MIBC and Dow-froth 250 as frothers and calcium hydroxide as a pH adjuster. The images of bubbles in the cell during flotation process were recorded using a high-speed camera. The froth concentrate with average copper grade of 2.0 mass% was further processed by atmospheric leaching with a solution of sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid, respectively and high pressure leaching with sulphuric acid solution. As a result, leaching rate of copper reached about 60 % in an atmospheric leaching with sulphuric and hydrochloric acid respectively, whereas the rate can reach more than 70 % by autoclave leaching at high pressure under the controlled condition. A process to recover of copper from its low-grade ore can be developed by optimization of flotation combined with acid leaching.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live.
