Due to implementation of the rotator construction method from which a smooth shaft was anticipated, a full-scale pile load test (Osterberg Method) was performed at Pier 14 Pile 9 of the main span of the New Benicia-Martinez Bridge to confirm the design parameters of the rock sockets. Two levels of load cells were fabricated in the reinforced cage of the rock socket. Each level consisted of three 670-mm Osterberg load cells with a total testing capacity of more than 50 MN in both directions. In an attempt to separate side friction and end beari ng, a 75 mm thick compressible Styrofoam material was placed at the bottom of the cage. The pile load test was carried out in four stages. The multi-level multi stage pile load test data was interpreted for casing friction, side friction for two rock strata, end bearing, and residual side shear values under repeated loading in opposite directions. The side friction from the casing in soils at Stage 2 is approximately 9 MN. The end bearing at the tip of the rock socket at Stage 3 was calculated to be approximately 17 MN at a displacement of about 75 mm. The residual side shear resistance for the 10 m 50% RQD rock strata was calculated to be 9 MN or approximately 50% of initial values, after being pushed 0.3 mm upward in Stage 1, 71 mm downward in Stage 2, then 55.5 mm upward again in Stage 3, and finally 105.3 mm downward in Stage 4. The test results surprising ly indicate that the side shear resistances from both low RQD intensely weathered rock and higher RQD slightly weathered competent rock are about the same at approximately 19 MN. This pile load test provides very critical information for confirming deep shaft design and analyses.

"In order to determine the in-situ shear strength of rock joints, large scale testing is required. However, this is both expensive and difficult to execute. One possible method to overcome this may be to use photogrammetry to capture large joint surface roughness in-situ and downscale it to replica samples, which could be sheared in laboratory. In this paper, as a first part in such a method, a technique to digitize surface roughness and to produce replica samples for laboratory shear testing from a larger joint sample are presented. First, a thin granitic rock slice with dimensions of 1.75 m x 0.95 m of granitic intact rock was chosen for the study. The joint surface is fresh and created through tensile induced splitting. The large joint sample is digitized using photogrammetry. Then, one fullscale 1.7 m x 0.6 m geometry is cropped from the digitized joint geometry and then subsamples at 10x, 7.5x, 5x, 2.5x and 1x scales. All sub-geometries are scaled down digitally to produce 0.17 m by 0.06 m geometries. The geometries are used to make casting molds both positive and negative to produce samples with perfect matedness. The casting molds are 3D printed in polylactic acid plastic and C60/75 concrete is cast to produce a replica series. In addition to the creation of this replica series, two pilot replicas are also tested using a portable shear box with a 0.5 MPa normal pressure. The results from the pilot rounds are presented and discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research are given.INTRODUCTIONThe rock mass strength is in many cases controlled by the shear strength of rock joints, especially in hard rock masses. The shear strength is generally found to be influenced by several parameters, including normal stress, the basic friction angle of the intact rock, the joint surface roughness, the joint wall compressive strength, the matedness of the joint surfaces, weathering and infilling. The effect of these parameters for the joint shear strength can be evaluated in laboratory scale. However, the shear strength is known to be scale dependent. How the scale effect influences the strength is not fully understood. The general consensus is that the shear strength decreases when sample size increases, i.e. a negative scale effect (Bandis et al. 1981). However, some studies have presented contradictory results, see for example Hencher et al. (1993) and Kutter & Otto (1990). The extent and nature of the scale effect is still a question of debate (Tatone & Grasselli 2013)."

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

A new process for extracting cadmium from the electric precipitated dust produced by ISP process was studied. A leaching rate of 89.1% of cadmium was attained by leaching the dust with NH3?H2O-(NH4)2SO4 system under the best leaching conditions: ratio of liquid to solid(l:s)=2.5, c(NH3):c(NH4+)=3:5, total concentration of ammonium and ammonia=8 mol?L-1, leaching time= 1.5h, temperature=35. The most troublesome impurity of lead could be deposited from the leached out solution automatically after put it static more than 15h when the total concentration of zinc and cadmium was up to 45gL-1 , and the final concentration of lead was 0.0047 gL-1, which meant 99% of it was removed. Metallic cadmium which contained cadmium more than 99% was prepared by electrowinning under the conditions: current density=750Am-2, total concentration of Cd2+ and Zn2+>25gL-1. The current efficiency was about 87% and the energy consumption for every ton of cadmium was about 548KWht-1. Main impurities of the metallic cadmium were copper and zinc and all of they could be got rid of in the following pyrometallurgical refining step.

Two years ago the general features of the St. Joseph Lead Company's zine-smelting process were described.' At that time the discussion was limited to a description of the production of high-purity electrothermic zinc oxide. The present paper will describe the commercial production of electrothermic zinc metal. Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtowlz smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. The raw material is zinc sulphide concentrate received from the company's mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. An average dry-weight analysis of this material is: Zn, 58.28 per cent; Pb, 0.56; insoluble, 1.6; SiO², 1.12; Fe, 6.4; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.27; S, 31.9; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.06; Mn, 0.24. Moisture content is usually about 3 per cent. Three 21-ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth Nichols-Herreshoff furnaces roast the coacentrate to a calcine of average conlposition (first 10 months of 1938): Zn, 67.69 per cent; Pb, 0.06; insoluble, 1.75; SiO², 1.26; Fe, 7.24; CaO, 0.47; MgO, 0.36; S, 1.88; Cd, 0.1; Cu, 0.07'; Mn, 0.27. The sulphur dioxide gas, after passing through a waste-heat boiler, proceeds through a recently redesigned low-resistance gas-purification assembly to the contact sulphuric acid plant, of which the capacity is 200 tons of concentrates per day. The calcine is mixed with a portion of returned furnace residues and sintered on 42-in, by 44-ft. Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines, gas-fired. Wind-box gases pass through air coolers before filtering in a 1440-bag Dracco unit, and thence to stack. The Dracco fume is mixed with Cottrell dust, from roaster gas cleaning, and sent to the leach plant, where it is roasted (SO² to acid plant) and leached with sulphuric acid to recover, as end products, lead sulphate, zinc sulphate and cadmium.

Volcanic arcs, including both island arc and intra-oceanic arc systems, combined extend for ~22,000 km around the Earth, with the majority (~20,000 km) occurring in the Pacific basin. These arcs are host to over 700 volcanoes of which ~200 are submarine and as such represent great potential for hosting massive sulfide deposits formed at seafloor hydrothermal vent sites. The Kermadec arc extends for ~1,200 km northeastwards from the North Island of New Zealand and forms the southern part of the ~2,500-km-long Tonga-Kermadec intra-oceanic arc system. At least 94 volcanoes are known to exist along this system with 74, or about 80%, being submarine. At least 33 volcanoes occur along the Kermadec part of the arc with all but one (Raoul Island) being submarine. The first sulphides recovered from the entire Tonga-Kermadec arc were in 1996 from the Brothers and Rumble II West volcanoes of the southern Kermadec arc. The 1998 R/V Sonne research cruise recovered a more comprehensive suite of mineralised samples from Brothers, and also found evidence for hydrothermal venting at Monowai, Vulkanolog, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes. The March 1999 NZAPLUME cruise systematically surveyed 260 km of the southern Kermadec arc and found that 7 of 13 volcanoes were hydrothermally active, with the vent fields either located within calderas (e.g., Brothers, Healy, Rumble II West) or atop volcanic cones (e.g., Clark, Tangaroa, Rumble V, Rumble III). The May 2002 NZAPLUME II cruise surveyed a further ~580 km of the mid-segment of the Kermadec arc, from Brothers to volcano 'L', a submarine volcanic edifice 35 km NW of Macauley Island. This cruise surveyed 13 major volcanoes and 8 smaller volcanic edifices and confirmed hydrothermal venting at the Vulkanolog site, and discovered new vent fields atop a volcanic cone within Macauley caldera, immediately offshore Macauley Island, and another at the summit of volcano 'L'. A further new site was found atop a volcanic knoll immediately S of Healy caldera during time-series sampling of the vent sites found during the 1999 cruise. All the vent sites discovered along the Kermadec arc occur in water depths between 1650 and 150 m.

"The effect of two refining slags (A: 1.0–1.8 CaO/Al2O3 ratio, 11–20 wt% SiO2; and B: 1.0–1.2 CaO/SiO2 ratio, 25–35 wt% Al2O3) on the inclusion morphology of a carbon structural steel (Q235B) was studied by controlling the balance between the steel and the refining slag at 1600ºC in a Si–Mo resistance laboratory furnace. The results showed that most of the inclusions in the molten steel balanced with slag A were formed by a lowmelting CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system with a total oxygen content (T[O]) being fixed at 6–13 ppm. The inclusions in liquid steel balanced with the slag B were mostly formed by the CaO–MnO–Al2O3–SiO2 system, with T[O] controlled to 19–26 ppm. The overall size of the inclusions under balance conditions was higher in the steel reacted with the slag B than that reacted with slag A, with the latter showing more inclusions smaller than 3 um. In order to generate a large number of spherical CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 inclusions smaller than 3 ??m while decreasing the T[O] in the resulting steel, the composition of slag A should be used. This composition allowed improving the cleanliness of the slab, and is also advantageous for the castability of the molten steel. IntroductionThe sample used in this study was a typical carbon steel manufactured by CQ Steel. The galvanized, tinned, and plastic composite steel plates made of the original plates are used extensively for decorative panels, general dust pipes, drums, instrument cases, switchboxes, and train cars, among other uses. The target control composition is shown in Table I. The S and P contents are usually fixed during production below 0.020 and 0.025 wt%, respectively, with the aim of reducing longitudinal cracks on the slab surface."

WHEN attempting to lift mill pulp containing a considerable percentage of wolframite, in an ordinary bucket elevator, difficulty was encountered from the tendency of the tungsten minerals to settle, on account of their high specific gravity. Lifts not exceeding 20 ft. (6m.) could be accomplished without particular difficulty, because there was insufficient time for consolidation of the heavy minerals in the bottom of the bucket; but with higher lifts, the heavy tungsten minerals would settle so solidly that when the bucket turned over at the top of the elevator the contents could be only partially dumped. In this case it ,was necessary to lift the material a distance of 34 ft. (10m.); hence some means had to be adopted to prevent settling, at least to such an extent that the material could be dumped from the buckets. To reduce the carrying time to a sufficient extent would have required a belt speed of 475 ft. (144.7m.) per minute, which was not feasible. It was decided to try, by vibrating the belt about midway of its span, to keel) the material sufficiently agitated during elevation to prevent settling. Underneath the rising side of the belt was placed a 12-in. (30.48-cm.) idler pulley, 18 ft.-(5.5 in.) up in the total lift of 34 ft. The idler pulley was set eccentric by 3/4 in. (19 mm.) and it was hoped that the vibration thus imparted to the belt, running at a speed of 280 ft. (85 m.) per minute, would prevent settling in the buckets. It was found that the pressure of the belt on the idler, due to the small inclination of the elevator, was not sufficient to overcome sliding on the idler, and the agitation was insufficient to accomplish the desired purpose. The idler was then connected to the drive shaft of the elevator through an intermediate pulley, gearing down to a speed of 20 r.p.m., so that a positive vibration was imparted to the belt; this imparted enough motion to the belt to prevent settling and the contents of buckets clumped satisfactorily.

A RECONAISSANCE of the chrome and manganese'1ore deposits of Culm was made in the spring of 191s by Albert Burch representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the writer representing the U. S. Geological Survey. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the: United States Government as to the location, character, size, and availability of the Cuban deposits of the ores of these important steel-alloy metals. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the Island. Mr. George A. Wright, of Baracoa, Cuba, a mining engineer especially familiar with the chromite deposits of Oriente Province, was a member of the party from Feb. 25 to Mar. 20. It was possible to visit most of, the chrome-ore deposits that seemed to be of promise, but there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Furthermore, no attempt was made to examine the extensive chromiferous iron-ore deposits of the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas districts, as these deposits cannot be regarded as sources of chromium except indirectly. At the close of the field work the essential data concerning the quantity and quality of ore probably available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, in the event of the continuation of the European war, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve, were furnished to such Government bureaus as were interested, including the Shipping Board and the War Industries Board, and as soon as chemical analyses of the chrome ores could .be obtained, a press bulletin on the subject was published by the Geological Survey. In the present paper the engineering data, and tonnage estimates contained in the unpublished notes of Mr. Burch have been freely used, and their helpfulness is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Many thanks are due Senor Montoulieu and Mr. Wright for their valuable work in the field; to the officials of the Spanish American Iron Co. and of the various other companies; and to individuals holding chromite claims, for courteously facilitating the work of the party. The intermetallic compounds NpAl2, NpAl3, and NpAl have been prepared, and examined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compounds are isostructural with the corresponding U-Al compounds. NpAl3 is face-centered cubic with a = 7.785A and has the MgCu2 structure. NpAl is simple cubic with a = 4.2624 and has the AuCU3 structure. NpAl4 is body-centered orthorhombic with a = 4.428, b = 6.268, and c = 13.71A. The published description for the atomic positions in UAl, applies also to NpAl4 THE U-Al system has been examined by Gordon and Kaufmann.1 They identified the following intermetallic compounds: UAI2, UAl3, and a third, tentatively identified as UAl5. A structure analysis of the latter compound by Borie2 proved that the formula UAl4 was more consistent with the X-ray data. The crystal structures of UAl2 and UA have been reported by Rundle and Wilson.3 UAl2 was found to be isostructural with MgCu. The atomic positions in the simple cubic UA1, cell were found similar to those in the AuCu3 structure. Three analogous compounds exist in the binary system Np-Al. X-ray data for the compounds NpAl2, NpAl3, and NpAl4 are reported below. The neptunium used in the investigation was supplied through the courtesy of the Argonne National Laboratory as neptunium (V) nitrate. It was stated to have a radioactive content of 99.25 pct Np237. The impurity limits had been established by a spectrographic analysis given in Table I. Any titanium, boron, or bismuth impurity should be effectively removed during the fluorination of NpO2 to NpF4, and sodium, lithium, magnesium or strontium during the alloying procedure. The oxalate ignition technique, described by Westrum for the preparation of finely-divided reactive PuO2, was used.The neptunium (V) nitrate solution, containing 100 mg Np, was evaporated to dryness on oxalic acid crystals. The resulting oxalate was calcined to NpO, by heating in platinum at 650°C for 2 hr. An equimolar mixture of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and purified hydrogen was passed over the NpO2 for 2 hr at 500°C. According to Fried and Davidson" the above fluorination conditions should produce the purple-black fluoride, NpF3 However, the light-green product showed only NpF4 lines on an X-ray diffraction pattern and contained only an estimated 5 pct of finely dispersed black NpF3 particles on microscopic examination. NpAl3: An intimate mixture of 50 mg of neptunium fluoride and aluminum powder (99.99 pct pure, —28 to $60 mesh) was heated to 900°C in a BeO crucible in vacuum by a tungsten coil for 2 hr, to allow the following reaction to proceed: NPF4 + 7Al + NpAl, + 4AlF. [1] The formation and sublimation of aluminum mono-fluoride in this system was verified from an X-ray diffraction analysis of the sublimate. The diffraction pattern was similar to one obtained in the aluminum reduction of UF4 to UF3,6 showing both Al and AlF3 lines. The resulting alloy was sintered at 1100°C for 1 hr. A powdered specimen of the crystalline product was sealed in a thin-walled quartz capillary for X-ray examination. The photograph was taken on a 14.32 cm General Electric powder diffraction camera, using filtered copper radiation. The films were calibrated in terms of a NaCl standard pattern. The wavelengths used in the calculations were 1.5418A for Cu K and 1.5405A for Cu K The powder diffraction pattern showed that NpAl is simple cubic with a = 4.262 % 0.005A, and is isostructural with UA13 where a = 4.27A1 or a =

The aging characteristics of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy have been studied by means of light metallography together with density, Young&apos;s modulus, and hardness measurements. The results were consistent with the precipitation of a single intermetallic compound during aging; overaging was slow relative to that in other iron-based binary alloys. The solution treatment temperature had a small effect on the rate of hardening whereas deformation prior to aging had a marked effect on both the rate of hardening and the peak hardness. The density data indicate that the compound precipitated is Fe3MO2 and not the Laves phase Fe2Mo. Analysis of the modulus and density results gave values for the time exponent for precipitate growth of approximately 1.0 and 1.5 for the alloy aged with and without prior deformation, respectively. DETAILED studies of precipitation hardening in bcc matrices have been confined largely to the effects of carbides and nitrides. In view of this and the growing technological interest in intermetallic compound strengthening, e.g., in maraging steels, a study of precipitation in iron-based alloys with a low interstitial content has been undertaken. This paper is concerned with the aging behavior of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy; the mechanical behavior of the alloy will be reported later. The early work of sykes on Fe-Mo alloys showed that precipitation of the intermetallic compound was accompanied by an increase in hardness and a decrease in volume of the material. More recent surveys of the strengthening associated with precipitation have been made3-5 and, in particular, Elsen and wassermann4 showed that deformation prior to aging increased the rate of hardening. These latter workers also followed the precipitation process by means of dilatometry, electrical resistivity, and lattice parameter measurements. Their results confirmed that there is a decrease in volume on aging. Except for the work of Hornbogen on an Fe-20 at. pct Mo alloy, neither clustering nor the precipitation of a nonequilibrium phase has been observed in Fe-Mo alloys. Studies of alloys of lower molybdenum content475 indicate that the equilibrium intermetallic compound is precipitated during aging. However, there is some doubt concerning the nature of the equilibrium precipitate phase. According to the phase diagram constructed by Hansen,8 the phase should be precipitated. This phase has a rhombohedra1 crystal structure which is characterized by the formula Fe706,&apos; although the composition of the molybdenum-rich boundary corresponds approximately to Fe3Mo2. The version of the diagram proposed by Sinha, Buckley, and Hume-Rother indicates that the A phase, a Laves phase Fe2Mo, should be precipitated. Their observation of a Laves phase supports the earlier findings of Bechtoldt and Vacher,13 although, in a recent study of the system by means of diffusion couples, Rawlings and Newey did not detect the phase. The work presented here describes the effect of solution-treatment temperature, aging temperature, and prior deformation on the aging characteristics of the alloy as revealed by light metallography together with hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements. In addition the density data are used in an attempt to determine the compound precipitated during aging. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A 29-kg ingot of the alloy was cast at R.A.R.D.E., Fort Halstead, from deoxidized, Japanese electrolytic iron and sintered molybdenum. The ingot was homogenized for 6 hr at 1473°K and then worked, with intermediate anneals, into 6- and 16-mm-diam rods and 6-mm plate. Chemical analysis of the alloy gave, wt pct: Mo, 17.5 (11 at. pct); C, 0.003; Si, 0.002; S, 0.005; P, <0.002; and02, 0.0098. Solution treatments were carried out under a dynamic argon atmosphere in a vertical, "crusilite" element, furnace which had a facility for rapid quenching into iced water. Except for the study of the effect of solution treatment temperature, all specimens were solution-treated at 1573" * 2°K for 1 hr. Salt baths were used for the aging treatments. Specimens for hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements were produced, after heat treatment, from the stock rod or bar using a precision silicon carbide slitting wheel. As described later, the quenching treatment produced local plastic strain in the stock material; consequently, care was taken to ensure that the specimens were not prepared from these regions. Those specimens used in the studies of the effects of prior deformation on the aging behavior were strained in compression in a Denison universal testing machine. Specimens for light metallographic observations were mechanically polished on successively finer grades of diamond paste down to and then etched in either alcoholic ferric chloride or in a 2 pct nital solution. Vickers diamond pyramid hardness data were obtained using a 30-kg load. At least five impressions were averaged for each determination. Density measurements were made using a displacement technique in which each specimen was weighed in air and in dibromoethane at 296°K. The specimens were cylindrical and weighed 3 to 4 g; all weighings were made on a balance reading to 1 x 10"5 g. For each specimen the mean value of five weighings was used to calculate the density. The density of the dibromoethane was determined using the displacement procedure and a standard nickel specimen. The error in an absolute density value was estimated to be HI.01 pct. COUNTRY RISK ANALYSIS A company operating in a foreign country assumes all the risks that it would at home. However, beyond these, it assumes risks that arise from the unique political economic, financial conditions of the foreign country which it operates. These risks are known as "country risks". The importance of these risks has grown appreciably in the recent past (particularly in the aftermath of Iran&apos;s revolution in the late 1970s and Mexico&apos;s debt rescheduling of 1982-83), and as a result, country risk analysis has become an increasingly useful management tool. Country risk analysis seeks to assess the probability that countries will service their aggregate foreign liabilities on time, as well as the probability that country conditions could inhibit the debt service capability of private sector debtors. This involves assessment of both the ability and the willingness of countries to meet their external liabilities in a timely fashion. "Ability" is linked economic and financial variables: principally, a country&apos;s economic structure, foreign exchange generating capacity and debt service burden. On the other hand, "willingness" is tied to political factors: mainly the economic/financial orientation of government policy and the stability of economic decision making. Ability: Economic, Financial Conditions and Prospects Judgement of a country&apos;s ability to meet foreign financial obligations begins with a detailed study of a country&apos;s external balance sheet which compares the country&apos;s foreign liabilities and assets. Table 1 below presents country balance sheets for Mexico, Korea and Indonesia. On the other hand, the relationship between Korea&apos;s external liabilities and assets ($50.5 billion and $7 billion, respectively), is more favorable and helps explain why Korea has been able to meet debt service payments and maintain its access to the international capital markets. Indonesia has even a more favorable relationship between its foreign assets and liabilities, $31 billion and $9 billion, respectively, and its debt is mostly lower interest rate, non-bank debt, making for a less onerous debt service burden. The Rush Creek district of Marion County, Ark., has had a more or less continuous record of zinc production over the past 40 years. The ore has come from many small mines working on oxidized and semi-oxidized deposits found in the Everton formation where that formation forms the present surface rock. Prospecting has been restricted to the hillsides above the creek levels, the actual ore outcrops being the guides. Little attention has been paid the possible sulfide zones. In August 1942, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines recommended exploration of the Powell and Cotter formations, which underlie the Everton, for which purpose the Survey had previously located 18 proposed drill-hole sites in geological structures that seemed favorable to are deposition.

"Barite is used extensively by the oil and gas well-drilling industry as a weighting agent. It is particularly well suited for drilling mud because of its qualities; it is non-abrasive, heavy, virtually inert chemically, easy to handle and inexpensive compared to other available heavy materials. Increased deep well drilling in Western Canada, and especially in the Arctic regions, could dramatically affect the demand for barite through this decade. Known deposits in northeast British Columbia are possible sources of incremental barite supplies, should the situation develop.IntroductionThe purpose of this report is to examine the opportunities for expanding barite production in British Columbia. Of primary interest will be the relationship between the projected future levels of production and consumption of barite in Western Canada and the extent to which increased domestic production could replace the need for imports in filling any expected supply shortages.After a brief overview of the nature and uses of barite and some of the relevant features of the barite supply industry, the discussion will turn to the supply gap in the Canadian market and the possibilities for import substitution.OverviewBarite is an industrial mineral which is used in large quantities by the oil and gas well-drilling industry. It is often an important component of drilling mud, a fluid circulated continuously in the well during the drilling process to lubricate and cool the drilling apparatus and to contain the high oil and gas pressures found at depth. Barite (BaSO4) is particularly well suited as a weighting agent for drilling mud because it is a heavy (specific gravity to 4.5) inert mineral which is inexpensive in relation to other materials having a high specific gravity. In the on-site use of drilling mud, ground barite is combined with numerous other solid ingredients and chemicals in the form of a slurry. Other advantages of barite include cleanliness, ease in handling and its non-abrasive character (hardness of 3-3.5)."

THE constants in question pertain to the total radiation and the spectral radiation of a uniformly heated enclosure, or so-called black body. These constants have been determined for the range within which temperatures can be measured with thermocouples. Conversely, using these constants and suitable instruments, such as an optical pyrometer, for example, it is possible to determine temperatures far above the range attainable with the most refractory thermocouples. The formula of Stefan Boltzmann for expressing the total radiation of a black body is R = kT4 in which k is the coefficient or "constant" under discussion. In view of the fact that total radiation pyrometers are usually calibrated on an arbitrary scale, there is no great demand for an exact value of the coefficient of total radiation in absolute value. However, it is intimately connected with the constant of spectral radiation; hence, an accurate determination of the constant k gives a check on the constant of spectral radiation. The distribution of radiation in the spectrum of a black body is represented by Planck&apos;s equation, E? = C1?-5 (e c/?T - 1)-&apos;. The spectral radiation constant c, in this formula, is useful in optical pyrometry and in establishing a high temperature scale. The numerical value of the constant c has been determined in the range of temperatures measurable with thermocouples and, also, by extending the temperature scale to higher temperatures by means of total radiation measurements.

FOREWORD THE A. I. M. E. Subcommittee on Bituminous Mining has been trying for several years to secure the information that was collected by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. on the subsidence of its property caused by mining coal beneath it. The Marquette company was willing to have these data used, but it was impossible to obtain them because the records had been filed away. About two years ago these records became available and the engineering data presented herewith were compiled from them by R. L. Auchmuty, assisted by L. E. Young, who was connected with the collection of the information. On account of the cost, it is impossible to reproduce all of the data here, although the original information is on file with the records of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. The accompanying charts show representative and average data and give only the engineering information with enough description to tell how it was obtained. Agglomeration by balling in cylindrical or shallow pan devices dates back to the early part of this century. The first sintering tests conducted by Dwight-Lloyd on nonferrous ores included a mixing step for ore, flux and fuel carried out in a deep pan device similar to the balling pans, or discs, presently in use. Further work directed mainly toward sintering of ferrous and nonferrous ores always included a preparatory step, usually referred to as mixing, agglomerating or green-balling of the ingredients. In the late forties and early fifties two methods of particle preparation prior to firing were in general use. In Europe the balling pan was used predominantly, both as a mixer and as a pelletizer. In the United States many pilot plants and semi¬commercial plants used balling drums. When the first iron ore pelletizing plants were built in this country, the most frequently used device for green-balling was the cylindrical drum. At the same time, the pan device was used both in Europe and the United States for many other materials such as fertilizer, cement, flyash, alumina and copper concentrates, as well as to mix the feed for sinter machines. The difference between these two balling devices - -the drum and the disc - has been the subject of much discussion and is well covered by several papers included in the 1962 publication "Agglomeration&apos; issued by AIMS, based on their 1961 International Symposium held in Philadelphia.
