A spouted bed electrode (SBE) has been used, in laboratory experiments, to electrowin zinc from zinc chloride electrolytes with the objective of determining the suitability of this electrode for commercial application. Zinc was successfully electrowon at current densities ranging up to 4,38 lA/m2, which are an order of magnitude larger than those used at present in the zinc industry. Current efficiencies, for the cell with the SBE, have been as high as 90% and DC energy consumption as low as 2.8 kWh/kg zinc deposited. The performance of the cell has been measured as a function of current density, anode type, cell diaphragm, addition of tributyl ammonium chloride and purging of the electrolyte (to remove dissolved chlorine).

Low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation of copper difluoride (CuF2) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 11 to 302 K by adiabatic calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation was determined by HC1 solution calorimetry. The standard values of entropy (S°) and enthalpy of formation (?Hf°) at 298.15 K are l8.65±0.03 cal/deg mole and -129.02±0.29 kcal/mole, respectively.

An experimental survey has determined the occurrence of Ti2 Ni-type phases in binary and ternary alloys of Ti, Zr, or Hf with first, second, or third long-period transition metals and also in ternary systems in which 0 is the third component. The existence of eleven previously unreported isomorphs is cited and some approximate phase boundaries are given. Lattice parameters are reported for the new phases. The periodic table relationships involved in the occurrence of the phase are discussed. A previous paper' reported the occurrence of a group of Ti2Ni-type phases (structure-type E93) containing Zr in combination with Rh, Ir, and Pt, and Hf in combination with Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt, and cited evidence to show that all of the Zr phases and the Hf-Pd phase are not binary phases but occur only when 0 is present. More recently one of the present authors found that in the ternary systems of Ti and 0 with Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni the occurrence of the Ti2Ni-type phase could be correlated qualitatively with valency electron concentration, and that the role of 0 appeared to be that of an electron acceptor.' This paper describes the results of a broader investigation of the occurrence of Ti2Ni-type phases in binary and ternary systems containing Ti, Zr, or Hf. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by arc melting. The purity of the metals Zr, Rh, Hf, Ir, Pd, and Pt was given in the previous paper.' The additional materials used for this work were metals with a minimum purity of 99.9 pct and reagent grade ZrO2, TiO2, Cr2O3, and NiO. Chemical analysis of several alloys in each system indicated good agreement between intended compositions and cast-button compositions. For the heat treatment precautions were taken to avoid oxygen contamination. The specimens were wrapped in Mo foil and sealed in fused quartz tubes at a room temperature pressure of 1 x mm of Hg. These capsules were then annealed in a vacuum furnace at an external pressure of 5 X mm of Hg. Since the major constituent in most of the alloys studied was the brittle Ti2Ni-type phase, Debye-Scherrer patterns with sharp lines could be obtained with powder crushed from the annealed solid samples without being reannealed. Metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and density determination techniques previously described1, 2 were used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-Oand Zr-Pt-O Systems-Figs. 1 through 3 show the approximate boundaries of the Ti2Ni-type phase fields at the temperatures indicated in the ternary systems Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-O and Zr-Pt-0. In each isothermal section the Ti2Ni-type phase field is labeled E and the unidentified binary phase found in the previous work' is labeled ?. The dotted lines, which are not phase boundaries, correspond to the composition (Zr2 B)1-xOx. In each system the Ti2Ni-type phase field is displaced to the high-Zr side of this composition line. However, the departures from Zr2B stoichiometry for the metal components are not as high as Zr3B, as was inferred from the previous work. Lattice parameters of the Ti2Ni-type phases in the alloys shown as triangular data points in Figs. 1 through 3 are given in Table IA. The probable compositions of the Ti2Ni-type phases have been estimated from the isothermal sections. A geologic framework for interpreting stratigraphic and geographic variations of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Creek Basin is developed from lithologic data accumulated by the Bureau of Mines from oil-shale coreholes. From detailed Bureau of Mines descriptions of samples from nine coreholes and supplementary lithologic data from seven additional sampled sections, three cross sections were constructed along lines transecting the basin. Plotted as lithologic columns with corresponding oil yields and resistivity logs, the sampled sections are correlated on a time-stratigraphic basis. Distribution and correlation of nahcolite and halite zones are shown, and the approximate base of leaching of these saline minerals is indicated. General lithologic characteristics of members and zones are discussed and interpreted. Large-scale lithologic logs illustrate the nine Bureau of Mines core descriptions, and the complete description of Bureau of Mines-Atomic Energy Commission Colorado Corehole No. 1 is included in an appendix. The time-correlated cross sections provide a necessary framework for understanding the depositional history of the Green River Formation and will facilitate evaluation of oil shale and other mineral resources in the Piceance Creek Basin.

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

Stopes are used in several underground mining methods. Boundary determination of these stopes is generally based on simple rules of thumb. While several stope boundary optimisation techniques are available, they fail to guarantee true optimum results. The first part of this paper reviews some important stope boundary optimisation studies and proposes a new algorithm to optimise stope boundaries and layouts for underground operations. The second part applies the proposed algorithm to a block model to test its ability to produce optimum results and demonstrate its applicability in a number of different scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can find optimum stope boundaries and layouts in three dimensions for different stope sizes and economic conditions.

In the present work, the viscosities of molten FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 semi-synthetic slags for nickel flash smelting were measured in the temperature range from 1473 to 1723K by a rotational viscometer. The ratio of Fe to Si02 was fixed at 1.2, calcium and magnesium oxide contents varied in the range from 2 to 8 mass% and 9 to 12 mass%, respectively. The results showed that silicate anions became smaller by increasing CaO content, which results in a decrease of the viscosity of the slag. In the case of MgO addition the viscosity behavior was complicated. At MgO content below II mass%, the viscosity increased with the increase of MgO at all temperatures tested. However, when the MgO content was above II mass%, the viscosity decreased slightly for FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 system. At higher MgO contents, low-viscosity slags can be obtained by adding CaO. At a given composition, .the viscosity decreased with increasing temperature. The higher the temperature, the more MgO can be added before saturation. The effect of Fe3O4 on the viscosity was quite significant. The viscosity of slag increased by 300mPa-s at 1573K when Fe3O4 content varied from 3 to 9 mass%. The viscosity values are presented as the functions of temperature and composition. A comparison between FenO-MgO-SiO2 and FenO-MgO-CaO-SiO2 systems is given in this study.

LITTLE information has been published concerning the actual or useful amount of energy obtained from explosives when they are used for blasting. To provide more data on this subject, 8-in. neet cement cubes were blasted in a steel plate box and the breakage energy evaluated by comparison with drop crusher results using Rittinger's,1,2 Kick's: and Bond's' theories. Knowledge of the failure of solids under static loads is developing very rapidly. Their failure under impact loads has been investigated and reported in the literature only to a limited extent. Theories of failure' hnder static loading include 1) the maximum stress theory, 2) the maximum strain theory, 3) the theory of constant elastic strain, 4) theory of maximum shearing stress, and 5) Mohr's theory of strength. All of these have elements of usefulness in establishing an applicable theory for blasting. The detection of ethylene in mined-out ‘goaf’ areas of underground coalmines is an industry standard indicator of accelerated oxidation where the coal temperature has exceeded 100°C. If uncontrolled, this naturally occurring process can lead to spontaneous combustion and catastrophic mine explosions, such as the Moura No 2 mine explosion. Spontaneous combustion trigger action response plans (TARPs) typically use the detection of ethylene as a trigger for definite change requiring immediate reaction, which can include the withdrawal of coalmine workers.Following the completion of sealing of longwall goaves at Crinum North Mine, ethylene was often detected in trace quantities. These trace quantities were below 1 ppm and detected via the bag sampling regime, with the use of a gas chromatograph. Any ethylene detected in these instances was not associated with increased quantities of carbon monoxide to conclusively indicate a heating within the sealed area.Ethylene was only detected in a newly sealed goaf and would not remain present for a period following the sealing. As part of the longwall recovery process, the predominant roof support mechanism during the recovery was the use of timber cribs. It was decided to investigate the possibility of this timber generating ethylene.Preliminary tests were completed by placing timber specimens from several species of Australian native hardwoods in gas bags in air. The most complete mining show ever held in the United States and the largest exposition of its kind to be held anywhere in the world in 1988. That's how the American Mining Congress is billing its "MINExpo International '88," to be held April 24-28 at Chicago's McCormick Place, the largest exposition facility in the country. MINExpo International '88 will combine for the first time two previously separate AMC-sponsored shows - the International Coal Show and the International Mining Show. Starting with the 1988 show, MINExpo International will be held every four years. The next show, in 1992, will be held in Las Vegas. The MINExpo in Chicago will feature more than 500 mining equipment and services exhibits covering 3 hm2 (320,000 sq ft) of exhibit space. Exhibitors will display products ranging from small safety devices to large earth-moving equipment. MINExpo is one of the few trade shows selected by the US Department of Commerce for its Foreign Buyer Program. Commerce is working with US embassies around the world to publicize MINExpo and to form delegations of visitors from many countries. Overseas visitors to the show will be assisted at an on-site International Business Center. It will provide currency exchange, translation, and other services to foreign buyers. Registrants at MINExpo will also be able to attend their choice of 27 morning-only program sessions. At these sessions, international mining experts from industry, government, and academe will analyze technical, strategic, and policy matters and discuss the outlook for the industry. "Toward the 21st Century" is the theme of this year's program. The technical workshops and managerial seminars are designed to assist mining executives, engineers, and geologists as well as mine superintendents, managers, and foremen in handling their responsibilities. Based on previous attendance at AMC international mining shows, the association says that more than 25,000 persons are expected to attend the Chicago show. It is expected that approximately 15% of the attendees will be from foreign countries. The Soviet Union will be among those exhibiting at MINExpo. The Russians have leased more than 2.8 dame (3000 sq ft) of space to display their mining machinery and equipment. It is the first time that the Russians have joined in an exhibition of mining equipment in the US. The two largest manufacturers of mining equipment in the Soviet Union, Setmash and Avtoexport, will put on display in Chicago a variety of Russian-made equipment. It will range from 100 t (110 st) heavy-duty dump trucks and diesel engines to drilling, hoisting, and conveying equipment. In addition to some 400 US exhibitors of mining equipment and services at MINExpo, nearly 100 companies will be present from other major mining nations such as Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, and West Germany. And, for the first time, a Chinese manufacturer will take part in the AMC show, participating with its US marketing partner.

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

"Optical microscope together with alternative wet-dry cyclic accelerated corrosion tests and XRD, SEM were employed on bridge weathering steel samples with different Mn and Ni contents which were vacuum induction melted and rolled to study their effects on the microstructure and rust layer evolution in er' containing condition. The results show that the microstructure is mainly ferrite and pearlite when Mn and Ni contents are 0.75 %, 0.42 %, respectively. Both the increase of Mn and Ni contents will make pearlite disappear while granular bainite appear, meanwhile the grain size decreases. With the increase of Mn content, the corrosion rate decreases in the initial stage, but the effect becomes little in the later stage. The increase of Ni not only improves the corrosion resistance of steel base at the initial stage but also hinders the tendency of further corrosion. As Mn content increases, a-FeOOH contents in rust layer decreases. With increase of Ni content, the content of a-FeOOH in the rust increases while that ofy-FeOOH decreases.IntroductionWeathering steels had been ~radually applied in manufacture of bridges owing to reducing the corrosion rate remarkably [I- l .Good weldability was needed for high performance bridge weathering steels. Since carbon was thought to be bad for weldability, low carbon content steel was adopted and Mn was added to amend the mechanical strength loss. Some scholars[6, 7l believed that Mn was beneficial for increasing corrosion resistance performance of the steel in marine atmospheric environment. Some scholars [S, 9l thought that Mn had little effect on corrosion resistance in marine atmospheric environment. Presently, the effect of Mn on bridge weathering steel in marine atmospheric environment still remained poorly understood. Ni was considered to be beneficial for increasing corrosion resistance performance in marine atmospheric environment [JO-l4l However, the high cost limited its application range. What would bring to the rust and corrosion by decreasing Ni content needed further research.Most researchers assumed that microstructures only affected the corrosion behavior of bare steel. But the study of Guo et al. P5l showed that the homogenous microstructures were beneficial for the corrosion resistance of steels. The effect of Mn, Ni content change on microstructure and microstructure on corrosion still remained poorly understood. In the present work, the effect of Mn and Ni on the microstructures of steel matrix, as well as the microstructures on the rust and corrosion was investigated."

The Yanacocha project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone during 1976. Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap-leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha SA (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits. And it has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru’s mineral resources. Construction began on Aug. 1, 1992. The first gold bar was poured on Aug. 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo Mine. During 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 2.5 t (81,000 oz) of gold and 9.4 t (304,000 oz) during1994 (40% above budget). Production was expected to exceed 15.5 t (500,000oz) during 1995 with the start-up the Maqui Maqui Mine.

The production of ferronickel and matte from nickel laterite ores is dominated by the Rotary Kiln, Electric Furnace (RKEF) process. Over time, major improvements have been made to kiln operation. In particular, kilns are now required to perform substantial amounts of reduction of the metallic oxides, thereby reducing the load on the electric furnace and substituting less expensive fossil fuel for electrical energy. To the basic refractory lined cylinder have been added: internal features such as dams and lifters, aimed at changing residence times in different sections of the kiln and enhancing gas/solids interaction, on-board fans to introduce tertiary air and on-board scoop mechanisms to allow reductant coal additions to be made at advantageous locations along the kiln. Many of these advances in design have been made on a trial and error basis and by 'borrowing' technology from related kiln processes, supplemented by proprietary modeling to various levels of sophistication. This paper presents a conceptual review of modeling components for the development of a computational model for granular material flow, combustion and heat and mass transfer in a nickel laterite kiln. These components include: granular material flow and segregation models for the simulation of bed motion, heat transfer models that simulate heat transfer by turbulent diffusion and radiation and the distribution of this thermal energy within the bed, and fluid flow models for the prediction of combustion aerodynamics.

J., and whether there are. any traces of zinc in these Brazilian-deposits. J. T. This paper describes experimental procedures for the calibration of capillary tubes to be employed as comparison standards in gas flow-rate measurements and considers several types of flow which were observed in the calibration of seven capillaries of varying diameter. It is shown that under certain experimental conditions deviations from Poiseuille flow are observed which may not be attributed to turbulence, and that this flow behavior may be described empirically by introducing the classical kinetic energy correction into the Poiseuille equation. INTRODUCTION Techniques have been developed for the measurement of the volume rate of flow of nitrogen through glass capillary tubes as a function both of the differential pressure applied and of the absolute gas pressure. Capillary tubes thus calibrated are frequently used to determine the rate of gas flow through a porous sample in the measurement of slip-corrected permeability. The purpose of this note is to describe the calibration procedure and to discuss some observed deviations from the ideal flow behavior predicted by the Poiseuille equation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The volume flow rate of nitrogen as a function of the differential pressure was determined experimentally for a series of seven glass capillary tubes of varying diameter. As is shown in Table 1, the capillary radii in the series ranged from 0.004 cm for K1 to 0.07 cm for K7. The capillary tubes were cut from capillary tubing purchased on special order from several manufacturers and the bore radii were determined by microscopic measurement. The gas volume flow rate was measured for each capillary tube at a series of differential pressures in the range from 0 to 3 cm of mercury and at average absolute pressures of 1.0, 2.5, 4.0, and 6.0 atm. Experimental Procedure for Small Capillaries A schematic diagram of the apparatus used to calibrate the three smallest capillaries, Kl, K2, and K3, is shown in Fig. 1. By means of a standard Ruska Instrument Corp. volumetric pump (equipped with a synchronous motor drive, two stages of gear reduction, and a quick-change lathe gear box), nitrogen was displaced by mercury from a metal cell immersed in a constant-temperature bath. The pump, the line to the cell, and a part of the cell were filled with mercury. As mercury was forced into the cell, it displaced nitrogen which passed through the capillary tube being calibrated and into a large container with a volume of approximately 30 liters. Since the volume of this container was very large compared to the total volume change of the gas resulting from the action of the displacement pump, the absolute pressure of the system was essentially constant throughout any one run. Prior to any determination this pressure could be set at any desired level by means of an auxiliary nitrogen cylinder. The differential pressure across the capillary was measured with a Meriam Red Oil manometer and recorded together with the corresponding pump displacement rate which was equal to the gas flow rate. By repeating this process for a series of different displacement rates at each of the absolute pressures of interest, the data necessary for plotting the calibration curves for capillaries K1, K2, and K3 were obtained. All calibration measurements were made in a constant temperature room to minimize errors due to temperature fluctuations. In each run. the flow was maintained until equilibrium was established. Experimental Procedures for Large Capillaries The flow rates through Capillaries K4, K5, K6, and K7 required to obtain the pressure drops desired were larger than could be obtained from available constant displacement pumps, and it was thus necessary to employ an alternative calibration procedure. The arrangement of apparatus used in calibrating these capillaries at an average pressure of one atmosphere is shown in Fig. 2. Each capillary was calibrated by flowing nitrogen through the capillary and recording the differential pressure as a function of the flow rate. 'The differential pressure was measured with a Meriam Red Oil manometer and the flow rate was determined by collecting the effluent gas over water at constant pressure and recording the increase in volume per unit time after an equilibrium had been established.
