Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is a selective depressant for nickeliferous pyrrhotite during pentlandite flotation. Laboratory flotation tests conducted on ore and process samples showed that pyrrhotite rejection is greatly improved by small additions of DETA; however, the effectiveness of this depressant is most noticeable when the mineral sample is oxidized. LIMS and XPS analyses conducted on flotation products and pyrrhotite specimens showed that the difficulty in pyrrhotite rejection arises from inadvertent activation of the mineral by heavy metal ions, such as Ni2+, cu2+ and Ag+, that are present in the process water. In the presence of DETA, however, the mineral is deactivated under oxidizing conditions. The deactivation mechanism may involve oxidation of the activation products, which are likely in the form of heavy metal sulfides, followed by solubilization by DETA. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite electrodes contacted with DETA showed no trace of the reagent on the surface, substantiating the view that its role is one of complexing agent that enhances the dissolution of activation products under oxidizing conditions. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite contacted with amyl xanthate solutions showed that both dixanthogen and iron xanthate are formed on the surface, the latter becoming more predominant at higher potentials. In the presence of DETA, however, only a small amount of xanthate is adsorbed on the mineral at potentials (Eh) approximately 200 mV higher than the case without DETA.

Procedures are presented for determining the hourly production rate, mechanical and physical availability, utilization, use of availability, and global performance factors for the bucket wheel excavator (BWE) itself, as well as for the system composed for the BWE, conveyors, and stacker. An example demonstrates the flow of calculations. Using available data from mines that use BWE technology, the ranges of values of the BWE performance factors are presented in tabular form. They can be used as a guide during mine planning as well as to evaluate existing systems.

Coal mines and power plants utilize different methods to control dust for the safety of their workers and to protect their installations. The methods that they use are limited by the Environmental Protection Agency or the states in which they operate. Now there is a new technology for controlling dust at conveyor transfers! The Passive Enclosure Dust Control System utilizes several proven technologies to mitigate fugitive dust. This new system has been proven to be four times more effective than standard enclosures utilizing bag house collection and is considerably less expensive to install and operate.

Selective flocculation of iron ores is extremely sensitive to the type and amount of soluble salts in pulp solutions. Chemical precipitation of alkaline earth ions combined with ultrasonic treatment deactivates their adverse effects without using any environmentally ill-defined reagents. The manner in which ultrasonic treatment affects starch adsorption on hematite, dissolution of quartz, and the selective flocculation process was investigated. Selective flocculation tests were conducted in the presence of up to 400 ppm calcium ion on a quartz-hematite mixture by precipitation as calcium carbonate, and the role that silicate ion generated by ultrasonic treatment plays in achieving the selectivity of separation is discussed.

Hecla Mining Company and NIOSH cooperated in a study to document the safety of rock support supplied by reinforced cemented paste backfill at the Lucky Friday Mine. Data are presented on backfill modulus values from laboratory tests and compared with modulus values from in-mine wall closure on the backfill. It is theorized that a compressive zone is created in the backfill between the upper and lower bearing plates on the reinforcing bolts, and that the backfill remains stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent bolts overlap.

In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

The separation of feldspars from quartz has been the subject of numerous studies since 1930 and the flotation process so far proved to be the most suitable method. In the conventional process, feldspars are separated from quartz using a cationic collector and hydrofluoric acid as an activator of feldspars. There is no general agreement on the mechanism of fluoride activation of feldspar surfaces and the role of fluoride ions is briefly discussed. The use of HF is no longer acceptable due to environmental and health problems, and a few new reagents schemes have been reported. The available evidence shows that the success of these new reagent schemes is very limited. A new reagent scheme which is environmentally safe and cost effective for the separation of feldspars from quartz is yet to be resolved.

One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

The Bureau of Mines designed, constructed, and operated an 18-inch- diameter, fluidized-bed combustor for highly caking coals to evaluate the method for possible application to power generation. In initial tests, combustion was carried on successfully, with carbon losses as low as 0.8 percent. Coal ash was not satisfactory as a bed material, but mullite proved to be acceptable. Overall heat-transfer coefficients from the bed (-20 + 50 mesh mullite) to a water-cooled tube were about 75 Btu/hr-ft2- °F.

As hard rock mining develops deeper over time, there is an increasing need to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of adverse seismogenic rockmass reaction to mining. Real-time monitoring and feedback of mine data are used to tactically manage risk associated with induced-seismicity; however, strategic risk management requires reliable tools for forward predictions of seismic hazard. The forward prediction of seismic hazard is strengthened by understanding of potential seismic intensity, which often relies on well calibrated mine-wide numerical models. This paper uses a case study to explore how future seismogenic potential and the nature of future seismicity can be domained according to numerically predicted stress-strain paths at past seismic event locations. Delineation of high confinement seismogenic volumes vs. lower-confinement, high-strain seismogenic volumes at the mine-scale can be achieved, based on a loading and unloading stress path analogue, to refine understanding of seismic intensity. Practical qualitative and quantitative methods to achieve this delineation will be demonstrated. Once seismogenic mode (high-stress vs. high-strain) is identified, detailed analyses of seismic source parameters demonstrates change in seismic hazard between the domained volumes.

Mixer-settler extractors, among the oldest forms of extraction equipment, have been used since the beginning of this century. Over the past years, a very large number of mixer-settler devices have been designed and operated. Both batch and continuous flow mixer-settlers have been used. The continuous flow mixer-settler extractor offers a great number of advantages over other extraction equipment. The main advantage of the continuous flow mixer-settler is that it is a compact device. A large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area, and more stages can be added fairly easily. Many improvements have been made in the design of mixer-settlers. These improvements occurred in almost every phase of mixer-settler' operation; interface control, mixer design, intrastage pumping, interstage flow of the two liquid phases, and stage construction. It is believed that Barstow1 used one of the first continuous mixer-settler extractors. This mixer-settler had concurrent flow within each stage and countercurrent flow overall. The flow for both phases took place by gravity. The Barstow device and other early mixer-settlers had no separate interface control for each stage, therefore, "tilting" of the stages was necessary. In 1934 Holley and Mott2 designed a mixer-settler in which the heavy phase was recirculated within each stage by the use of a valve controlled central line instead of by a pump. Gordon and Zeigler3 in 1939 were among the first to use an adjustable valve to control the interface levels in a mixer-settler, making tilting of the extractor unnecessary. The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km and be lined using a precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT liner was grouted through ports drilled in the segments. The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) in Cleveland will extend approximately 2.93 km long and will be lined by using a similar precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 7,620 mm and external diameter of 8,230 mm. The WST liner was grouted using both grout ports built into the tail can of the TBM and through segments. Each tunnel was mined primarily in shale with varying levels of weathering and both tunnels had dry and wet sections. This paper will document the means and methods for grouting in each tunnel as well as the methods utilized to proof grout and the results found.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. The today status of air pollution control legislation and regulations can best be described as an exaggerated state of environmental limbo. The '70's began but one and one-half months ago yet it already has been very appropriately named "the decade of the environment." This certainly will be the decade for new legislation - new regulations and hopefully "Clean Air." Already Washington is faced with legislators playing "pollution politics" to the crowds. Students have redirected their efforts from Vietnam to the cleansing of the environment and everyone including the man on the street has become an environ¬mental expert. This is the decade we all face, but where are we today? Pollution is not a new problem. It has been with us for centuries and while much is left to be done, much has already been accomplished. I will try to make some comparisons of what I believe to be the good and bad points in the national air pollution control picture and hopefully will generate within each of you sufficient concern as to which comparisons are sound.

Why would a company in its right management mind risk a fuel conversion program on a fuel that can't burn if it's too wet or too dry, too hot or too cold, too coarse or too fine, or doesn't have enough Btu's to supplement good combustion? On December 23, 1981, two months ago, we finished our first ten years of burning lignite -- this unconventional coal. It is from that experience that I am qualified to address you today. As some of you here probably already know, my company, Texas Utilities Generating Company, has pioneered the utilization of Texas lignite for electric power generation on a large scale, and I think it is fair to say that we have done this pioneering work largely on our own. Some of us feel like Noah did when he built the arc! I have titled this presentation "The First Lignite Decision" because our company was the first to make this major decision in Texas in the mid-1960's. It was a big decision, and at the time, perhaps a bold one. When you look at the conditions that existed in the mid-1960's, you can see why.

A study was undertaken to investigate the liberation behavior of coal macerals through size reduction and density separation. It was seen that the liberation of coal macerals could be achieved by size reduction, allowing selective separation of coal organic components. However, the degree of liberation was dependent upon the comminution history. Even for the same fineness, the extent of liberation might not be the same depending on how the material was generated. The liberation of coal macerals was analyzed by examining the liberation index. It was seen that, although comminution produced fine particles enriched in inertinite (primarily fusinite and semifusinite), these particles were less liberated than coarser particles. However, the liberation of macerals increased when all the feed was ground to a finer size.

In this US Bureau of Mines report, mine and mill cost models are presented to make estimates of the cost to develop mineral deposits in the desert region of the southwest United States. Regression analysis was used to generate capital and operating cost equations for each model based on daily production capacity. These models are used for Potential Supply Analysis (PSA) studies by the Bureau, which analyzes the economic benefits of minerals in a region.

The adsorption of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of molecular weight 25,000 onto alumina was studied as a function of pH. The adsorption isotherms were also determined. The adsorption density increases with increasing pH, while the isotherms are rounded and of the low affinity type. Electrokinetic studies indicate that the electrophoretic mobilities are reduced in magnitude in proportion to the PVA concentration, without any shift in isoelectric-point (iep). This resembles the influence of an indifferent electrolyte. The calculated values of the free energy of adsorption between alumina and PVA are suggestive of hydrogen bonding. FTIR spectro-scopic data provide additional evidence in support of hydrogen bonding.

The sedimentary western phosphate deposits of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming tend to be calcareous and generally carry a significant amount of dolomite along with collophanite. In some cases, such as the Smokey Canyon Mine, Afton, Wyoming, the ore will also contain mudstone, and in this case the aluminosilicate minerals (clay, feldspar, etc.) together with some dolomite are floated from the collophanite in column flotation cells with an amine in order to meet product specifications (31 % P205) (Service et al.). In other cases, such as the SF Phosphates Limited Mine, Vernal, Utah, the ore is treated by traditional fatty acid flotation of the collophanite with mechanical flotation cells (Weber, 1986). Preliminary tests have now been conducted to evaluate air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) technology for the flotation of western phosphate ore. For this preliminary study, samples were taken from the hydrosizer overflow stream (18-21 % P205) at the SF Phosphates Limited Plant in Vernal, Utah for scavenger flotation testing with the 2-inch ASH system in laboratories at the University of Utah. Selected design and operating variables are being studied, and the initial results show that satisfactory separations can be achieved by high-capacity ASH flotation at appropriate operating conditions. For example, with single-stage ASH flotation 80% recovery can be obtained with a scavenger concentrate grade of about 26% P2O5. These results are comparable to, or better than, those obtained at SF plant operations with conventional flotation cells and suggest that ASH flotation technology can be used to good advantage in the phosphate industry. Of course, research should be continued to consider other process streams, optimize the separation efficiency, and evaluate larger diameter ASH units.
