Geological remote sensing is, "....the study of the Earth utilizing electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) which is either reflected or emitted from the land surface in wavelengths ranging from ultra-violet (0.3 micrometre) to microwave (3 metre)."1 Selected examples which illustrate a variety of successful geologic applications include lithologic mapping, 2 engineering soils mapping,3 tectonic interpretation,4 and mineral and petroleum exploration.5 This report examines the applicability of remote sensing for bauxite exploration in northeastern Mississippi. Specific objectives were to map lithologies of northeastern Mississippi from LANDSAT imagery, to determine the utility of LANDSAT imagery for delineating and mapping known deposits of bauxite, and to discover and map new bauxite deposits.

Detection of the air recirculation branches within a large ventilation network may be difficult, therefore a PC computer routine has been developed to perform this task in an efficient and reliable manner. This paper describes the method illustrated using a network with complex multi-recirculation circuits. The fact that only the air flow directions and not the flow rates are used in calculations is of some interest. The air recirculation during a real mine fire is demonstrated using the PCVENT program, whose version 4.0 includes current information about any recirculation branches during network calculations or during a fire simulation. This paper also discusses some transient problems related to air recirculation, and gives examples.

A 1/20 scale experimental dozer push test rig was designed and constructed to quantify the expected production rates (loose cubic metres per hour) for dozers operating in hard rock bulk push applications. The particle size distribution of the material employed in the test rig was modelled on a fragmented muckpile representative of that for a typical surface copper/gold mine overburden. A commercially available road base material was found to be highly representative of site conditions. Buckingham Pi theory was applied to mathematically develop factors for scaling up dozer productivity parameters, including blade loads and push times. Dozer production rates were investigated for various dozing distances and slope angles. A series of instantaneous productivity curves were produced which are applicable for use in hard rock dozer push operations. Currently, it is difficult to estimate dozer push productivity in hard rock environments due to dozer productivity correction factors that are empirical in nature and provide only discrete, end-point values for a range of operating conditions. The productivity curves produced demonstrate that dozer productivity declines rapidly over the range of 10 m to 40 m. As such, it is recommended that efficient bulk dozing operations in hard rock mining blocks should not exceed 40 m dozing distance. Further testing of muckpile conditions with increased clay and moisture content would be beneficial in order to better understand and quantify the effects of cohesion on hard rock dozer push productivity.

"The 13.2 m external diameter double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques, and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km tunnel consists of 3.4 km TBM bored tunnel, 1 km twin NATM tunnels, and cut and cover sections. The project is being delivered in a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of Independent Design Verification. Presently, the project is in its advanced stages of construction with a recent successful TBM breakthrough on August 22nd 2015. The paper presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects and provides the status of the construction. PROJECT BACKGROUND The $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Upon its completion in 2017, the project will improve connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduce congestion and save motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction, and bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region; it will ease traffic across the strait, reduce congestion, decrease pollutants and emission while maintaining the historical silhouette of the city. Figure 1 provides a general view of the project location and alignment. The overall project consists of three parts totaling 14.6km. Parts 1 and 3 consist mainly of widening existing motorways, providing connections to existing roads, reconstructing local bridges and underpasses on the European and Anatolian sides respectively. Part 2 is the tunnel crossing across the Bosphorus; it is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km long consisting of 3.4 km of 13.2m external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut and cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. Bird Balls™, the latest development in the ongoing battle at mine sites across North America, help to eliminate accidental avian mortality caused by birds ingesting cyanide leachate. Bird Balls™ are a 4-inch sphere made of high-density polyeth­ ylene (HDPE). They weigh 40 grams and are black in color to provide optimum life in UV intense environments. A floating blanket of bird balls totally excludes birds from a liquid surface. Federal agencies that enforce the Migratory Bird Treaty Act do not specify how to keep migratory birds out of leachate basins. Some state agencies, however, specify that a physical barrier must be in place to exclude migratory birds if cyanide levels are high enough to cause mortality. Industry standards for protecting waterfowl now include Bird Balls™ as well as net­ting, detoxification, and heap leach systems designed in such a manner that no exposed solution ponds or channels exist. Hazing is no longer an option. A bold statement to make? Perhaps, but W. R. Jeffress (1990) covers the subject well when he stated that, "Hazing techniques as a whole have not been effective in excluding waterfowl or other species of wildlife from toxic heap leach solution ponds or tailings impoundments. Research and devel­opment of the new 'Star Wars' hazing techniques, such as laser netting and radar systems, are interesting concepts and will pos­sibly offer an alternative to total physical exclusion or neutral­ization in the future. All of these methods are going to have to be thoroughly tested." For those who may want further docu­mentation, we have included a special reference section cover­ing hazing. R. J. Hallock (1990) stated that, "The Fish and Wildlife Service is particularly interested in migratory birds. In fact, a large portion of our effort, nationwide, is focused on migratory birds. Bird habitats are managed directly through the National Wildlife Refuge System and indirectly through other agency programs. We also have a responsibility to protect birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Most birds attracted to mine ponds are covered under this Act. The only migratory birds not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act are English Sparrows, Starlings, and Pigeons. Since this is a treaty with five nations, the concept of acceptable losses does not apply. It is not a negotiable situation. There are a few exceptions noted in the Act, including prescribed hunting of selected waterfowl, scien­tific collection, and game bird farming. There is no exception for the loss of migratory birds exposed to solutions of cyanide."

The paper describes the exploration and development activity associated with a series of open pit gold deposits in the Laverton region of Western Australia with an aggregate resource base of 4 million tonnes at a grade of about 3 grammes per tonne. In September 1988, Hill Minerals N.L., now a wholly owned subsidiary of Ashton Mining Limited, completed the purchase of the Cork Tree Well treatment plant from Austwhim. This CIP plant had a rated capacity of 235,000 tonnes per annum, and is located within the Hill Minerals Laverton Project area. Ore is trucked by haulage contractors from each open pit mine to the central treatment plant at Cork Tree Well. Studies were completed and a plant expansion undertaken lifting throughput to 500,000 tonnes per annum. A contract was let for this expansion in November 1988, and construction completed in April 1989. Concurrent with the above project development work, heap leach metallurgical studies are being undertaken on low grade mineralisation associated with higher grade ore zones at several of the open pit mines, notably King of Creation and Craiggiemore. It is anticipated that heap leaching will provide a useful adjunct to gold production from milling higher grade ores.

A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses on a very finely disseminated, stratiform copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect in Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix, and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and the gangue. Grinding to -20 µm is required for adequate liberation. A 25-mm x 2.4-m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate. The rougher concentrate was then repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These fractions were analyzed for copper, iron, calcium and magnesium, and release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds, i.e., 99% and 88% passing 37 µm (400 mesh). The procedure should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability testing was also conducted.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. "In April 2016, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) began requiring the use of continuous personal dust monitors to monitor and measure respirable mine dust exposures to underground coal miners. Mines are currently using the PDM3700 personal dust monitor to comply with this regulation. After the PDM3700’s implementation, mine operators discovered that it interfered with proximity detection systems, thus exposing miners to potential striking and pinning hazards from continuous mining machines. Besides the PDM3700, other electronic devices were also previously reported to interfere with proximity detection systems. MSHA sought the aid of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and mining industry stakeholders to determine how the PDM3700 and some other electronic devices and proximity detection systems interact with each other. Accordingly, NIOSH investigated existing standards, developed test protocols, designed experiments and conducted laboratory evaluations. Some interferences were observed to be caused by electromagnetic interference from some electronic devices, including the PDM3700. Results showed that there was no significant interference when the PDM3700, as well as other electronic devices, and the miner-wearable component of the proximity detection system were separated by distances of 15 cm (6 in.) or greater. In the present study, it was found that the PDM3700 and the personal alarm device needed to be at least 15 cm (6 in.) apart in order for them to be used simultaneously and reduce potential interference. IntroductionUnderground coal miners are exposed on a daily basis to a variety of hazards, such as coal dust exposures, high noise levels, roof and rib falls, potential for fires and explosions, and operating and working with heavy machinery. One of the hazardous jobs is that of operating or working near a continuous mining machine. According to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics, 44 miners had been fatally struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems have been developed and are required on all operating continuous mining machines in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face continuous mining machines, by 2018 (MSHA, 2015a)."

The flotation behavior of pyrrhotite was investigated by using ethyl xanthate as a collector. Results showed that pyrrhotite had good floatability from pH 2 to pH 11, and poor floatability when pH was >12. The flotation of pyrrhotite was dependent on pulp potential on various pH values. The potential-pH range for pyrrhotite flotation was established. Cyclic voltammeny and FTIR spectroscopic analysis showed that the major adsorption product of ethyl xanthate on pyrrhotite was dixanthogen. The intensity of FTIR signals of dixanthogen adsorption on pyrrhotite and the anode current of a pyrrhotite electrode and flotation response of pyrrhotite are correlated with pulp potentials.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. Exports of crude gypsum from Mexico currently comprise about 60% of all domestic shipments, and about 25% of the imported material consumed in the U.S. wallboard industry. However, of growing importance are the domestic markets for calcined gypsum in Mexico including building plasters and wallboard, which account for 55% of the internal demand for natural mined material. This paper will examine the current trends in the production and trade of natural mined gypsum in Mexico and North America and the opportunities and threats that are facing existing and new suppliers in this changing market.

In 1991, most industrialized countries, except for Germany, were in a recession or a period of reduced growth. The US economy, already in recession, suffered from mounting banking system losses and the uncertainty brought about by the Persian Gulf War. However, US and worldwide minerals exploration did not collapse as it did during the mid-1980s. Even though gold and base metal prices declined, prices were still above cash costs for most operations. This allowed the continuation of established exploration programs but sharply limited new initiatives. Exploration 1990-1991 Planned worldwide 1991 exploration expenditures declined by about 8% from 1990 levels, according to a survey of 153 companies by the Metals Economic Group (MEG). Canada was the leading exploration target with 23% of the total, followed by Australia and the US (19% each), South Africa (13%), Latin America (11%) and the South Pacific (7%). The remaining 8% was split evenly between Europe and the rest of Africa. In Latin America, Mexico and Chile are the most attractive countries for exploration. Recognizing the risks involved, the industry has been cautious about ventures in the former Soviet Union. Survey results also showed that while the majors expected to maintain exploration spending, smaller firms were cutting back or actively seeking farm-outs from the majors (personal communication, M. Wegener, MEG).

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. This can be done with a number of assessments: 1) accurately measure KWH usage and track peak demand periods first; 2) identify the electrical equipment that affects your usage and the conditions that require it to be running; 3) remotely monitor and control as much equipment as possible, especially larger pieces of equipment; 4) with your utility determine that you are on the most suitable rate for your usage profile, then understand how your utility company calculates your electrical bill; 5) recognize how production affects energy usage and utility costs; 6) keep historical records of everything you monitor; 7) make information, live and historical, available to everyone; and finally, with the knowledge of your equipment and energy needs, automate controls that you have identified to optimize your energy usage and time of usage.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, tightly wrapped with many turns, all carrying current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften and become easily damaged. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution, and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor temperature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125 micrometer Graded Index Multimode Optical Fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperature with an accuracy of plus or minus one degree centigrade over a length of 4 km at 1-m intervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted simulating actual mine conditions and provide important data to allow MSHA's Approval and Certification Center to develop approval criteria for cyclically rated reeled machines.

The effect of the feed size distribution on the kinetic parameters in pyrite flotation was studied. The kinetic parameters of the particular sizes were determined as a function of whether other particle sizes were present. From the data, a relation between the pyrite flotation rate and the particle size distributions was obtained. It was shown that the flotation rate constant (k) is a function of the size modulus (dt) of the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann distribution, and its variation may be expressed as k = a • exp(b . d,) for either individual size fractions or composite feed. Parameters a and b are dependent on the particle size distribution of the feed. Specifically, parameter a increases linearly as the distribution becomes coarser. The above relationship was also tested under conditions in which the collector (KAX) dosage was varied from 130 to 278 g/t. It was shown that the established relation was not dependent on the collector dosage.

"Over 600 longwall panels have been mined in Pennsylvania in the last 50 years. Of those 600 panels, 25 panels undermined interstate highways. Despite this quantity of panels, much is still unknown regarding the detailed effects of undermining highways. The Gateway Mine, the Emerald Mine, and the Cumberland Mine undermined I-79 with 17 panels between 1982–1989 and 2003–2008, respectively; mine Eighty-Four undermined I-70 with 4 panels between 1987–2000.Through the examination of the panels that undermined I-70 and I-79, it is possible to determine which factors have most impacted the highway alignments. In some locations, the highway intersects with panels at angles ranging from 45 to 80 degrees, and at others, it runs between two panels, which simulates the effect of gateroads on the subsidence. The panels width to overburden ratio varies between 0.64 and 1.7, meaning that the interstates were influenced by both subcritical and supercritical subsidence basins. The face advance rates and overburden depths also vary between the panels.Unfortunately, specific information detailing highway impacts associated with unique characteristics of the subsidence basins are limited. However, using the profile function model and influence function model within the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS), the effects of overburden, panel size, and orientation of the road to highway can be indirectly assessed by profile and influence models of subsidence basin formation.INTRODUCTIONCoal mining has been an integral part of Pennsylvania’s history. Room-and-pillar mines have been active since the late-1700s when coal was extracted from outcrops. By 1830, the city of Pittsburgh alone consumed more than 400 tons of bituminous coal each day for domestic and industrial use (PADEP, 2019). In the late 1960s, the face of mining in Pennsylvania changed with the development of full extraction longwall mines. Since that development, over 600 longwall panels have been mined in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Pennsylvania alone (PADEP, 2019).As longwall mining and other forms of full extraction mining have increased in popularity, the amount of planned subsidence impacting the surface has also increased. The stresses and strains induced by longwall subsidence can cause damage to the surface as well any structures, water supplies, or water bodies that lie above the panel. Since the behavior of soils and structures vary, one way to study the surface effects of longwall mining is to analyze the impact on flat, rigid, pavement surfaces. Examining factors that vary the impact of subsidence with respect to highway alignment can demonstrate the favorable orientation of an alignment to avoid or mitigate damage and critical impact zones in a subsidence basin."

Introduction Agrico Mining Co.'s Florida mining division has three surface mines and employs nearly 700 workers. The division produces some 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of phosphate rock annually. It is a good business. And Agrico has made it better by making it safer through a new approach to mine safety. In one year, Agrico - the second largest phosphate mining company in the US - recorded a stretch of one million manhours without an accident. That same year, the direct cost of accidents dropped to $9137 from a previous five-year average of about $50,000. Together with Don Roe, division manager of safety and security, Division General Manager Don Morrow made 1981 a watershed year for safety at Agrico. Morrow called on consultants from Safety Management Services of Du Pont's Specialty Services division to strengthen a safety program that was already better than average. From the late 1970s and into 1981, lost-workday cases (LWCs) were costing Agrico an estimated average of $22,000 each. And they were occurring with alarming frequency. In 1977, the company recorded six LWCs at an incidence rate of 0.64. This was followed by a jump to nine cases in 1978. In 1979, both occurrences and the rate increased - 10 LWCs at a 1.19 rate. The number of LWCs decreased to seven in 1980, with a rate of 0.71. Agrico instituted a far-reaching safety program in 1981, which began to take full effect in 1982. LWCs dropped from five in 1981, to three in 1982. And the direct cost plummeted from $110,346 to $28,828. In 1983, the mines recorded only one LWC. Its $9137 cost represented a reduction of $101,209 since the Safety Management Services of Du Pont had been called in.
