HYL has developed a sticking tendency test which accurately predicts behavior of iron oxide feedstocks in the HYL III process. Test results together with pilot plant experimentation and commercial scale demonstrations permit the conclusion that lump ores will not agglomerate at 960°C (1233 K) in an HYL III Plant. Pellets may also be processed without agglomeration at 960°C (1233K) with the addition of no more than 5 percent lump ore. Using the HYL III process, the ironmaker can exploit feedstock market conditions without sacrificing plant productivity or energy efficiency.

INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. This paper presents the design solution for an actual case of settlement tanks, for a wastewater treatment plant under construction, actually founded on swelling clay (the nature of which had not been appreciated beforehand) and suffering considerable damage as a result. Two points of interest prompted the use of a numerical model as an alternative approach to the traditional method of analysis: First, the desire to compare the in situ measured deformation and displacement of the tanks with the figures calculated by the numerical model. Second the need to check the validity of the suggested solution as a remedy, i.e. the replacement of a certain thickness of clay by graded material.

Eastern US oil shale contains approximately 10 to 12 gallons of oil per ton and 7 to 10% pyritic sulfur. Physical beneficiation of these low grade shales using froth flotation provides a high grade material that makes extraction of oil more economically attractive. The Alabama oil shale used in the present study contained 16.46% organic carbon and 14.5 gallons of oil per ton as determined by Fischer assay. Liberation size of the kerogen was estimated at 10 µm. `Ken-Flote' column flotation technology provided a high grade concentrate containing as much as 60% organic carbon. However, carbon recovery was about 60%. Carbon recovery was improved to 75-85% while maintaining concentrate grades in excess of 40% carbon by providing longer retention time in the column, which facilitated effective bubble-particle collision and attachment.

"The overall goal of this study was to develop a suitable flowsheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. Only the findings from the first part of this study is being reported at this time. A total of fourteen coal samples of different ranks were examined for REEs concentration. An anthracite coal sample, originating from Pennsylvania having more than 700 ppm (in the coal ash) was selected for the REE extraction tests. The experimental program completed so far included high temperature leaching using nitric acid, followed by the solvent extraction tests. A 4x2x2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of thirty two high temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity (at 4 levels), solid content (at 2 level) and leaching time (at 2 level). The highest LREE (light REE) recovery of 90% and HREE (heavy REE) recovery of 94% were obtained from the most optimum leaching test condition while maintaining the impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40%. Solvent extraction experiments were conducted to recover the REE’s from the above leachate solution using a variety of organic extractants including, TBP, Cyanex, D2EHPA and their combinations. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant during this SX text series providing nearly 99% recovery of REEs. INTRODUCTION The demand for rare earth element and other strategic metals (REM) in the world is rapidly increasing due to their use in a variety of high technology applications. More than 100,000 tons of rare earth oxides (REO) are being used worldwide on an annual basis. However, we have less than 10% of the world reserve of rare earth element (REE) mineral deposits in the US. More than 60% of rare earth oxide (REO) was imported to the US from outside (mostly from China) in the year of 2013. However, China’s institution of export quota has significantly reduced the supply of REMs to the U.S. Hence, new ways of producing REM and/or finding substitutes for those metals for the high-tech applications need to be invented/discovered in a timely manner. Coal Combustion Byproducts (CCBs), which are discarded as waste materials in most cases, are known to contain REEs (in low concentration) that could be extracted using a suitable process flowsheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue considering the short supply of REMs and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the US. On an annual basis, more than 110 million tons of Coal Combustion Byproducts (CCBs) are being produced while satisfying our nation’s need for electricity (ACAA, 2014). However, less than 50% of these CCBs are being successfully used in various applications and the remainder is being dumped as waste materials in the landfills and ash ponds."

A detailed strata-mechanics investigation and examination was carried out in the E2 Panel (ML-II/7) of the XVI Bottom coal seam, which is located in the Moonidih Colliery of B.C.C.L., Jharia coalfield, India. Above this panel, the XVI Top coal seam was previously worked out by a longwall panel. Based on intensive field study and on experiments in a number of longwall panels located within various Indian coal mines, the actual behavior of the coal roof strata was evaluated and new strata-mechanics concepts around the longwall panels were developed. These concepts resulted in new methodologies concerning the behavior of roof rocks, caving characteristics, etc. within longwall panels and in the area of strata mechanics. Based on these new strata-mechanics concepts, a very simple, but realistic, model was developed to determine the optimum capacity of the powered supports. This model considered the combined loads resulting from the detachment of strata and composite layer blocks from the face and, also, loads due to the deflection of strata and composite layers situated above the detached roof rockmass. This formula, along with the other related formulas by the author, prompted the determination of the optimum capacity requirement for the powered supports to be used in the XVI Bottom coal seam, located under the worked out area. This new concept in strata mechanics and capacity requirements of the powered supports in a longwall face may be an aid to Mining Engineers.

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

The transport of lithium through a supported liquid membrane was studied with a mixture of D2EHPA and TBP in kerosene as a mobile carrier. In the flat- sheet supported liquid membrane(SLM) system, experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of concentration of mobile carriers in the membrane solution, hydrogen ion in the feed solution, and temperature on the transport of lithium. Experimental results agreed well with a transport model for permeating lithium across the liquid membrane. The permeation rates of lithium can be explained in terms of diffusion of a Li-complex through the membrane phase. For a practical application of an SLM method, a hollow fiber module has been used and lithium can be concentrated more than three times in 24 hours.

Considering the simplistic assumptions and limitations involved in simple analytical solutions and practical difficulties involved in conducting conventional full-scale explosion tests for evaluating 120 psi seal designs, there is a need for developing new scientific methods and engineering practices for design, analysis and evaluation of mine seals.

The by-product molybdenite technology in Chile is reviewed. Flowsheets, reagents and some operation features for the actual six Chilean moly plants(Chuquicamata, El Teniente, El Salvador, Andina, Las Tortolas and Pelambres), are presented. The chemical and physicochemical factors involved in the depression of copper and iron sulfides during the selective flotation of molybdenite, with sodium sulfide, sodium sulfhydrate, anamol-D and LR-744, are discussed. Advances in technology to solve problems of excess of lime (precipitation with sulfuric acid); excess of residual flotation reagents (activated carbon and kerosene); and optimization of depressant consumption (Eh control, nitrogen and low-oxygen air), are discussed.

A lyometallurgical process for extracting copper from an ore containing chrysocolla by leaching it with a kerosene solution containing LM 63 in the presence of small amounts of aqueous ammonia is described. The experimental results indicate that 70 to 75 percent of the copper can be extracted from the ore using an ammonia content that is about one-fourth the stoichiomeaic quantity required to leach copper in an aqueous leaching system. The rate of copper extraction was found to be a function of particle size, ammonia concentration and temperature. The large quantity of physically adsorbed water together with ammonia in the pores of chrysocolla provides a mechanism for the transport of copper to the external surface of the particles where it is complexed by the LM molecules and transferred into the organic phase. When size reduction accompanies leaching, the extraction process was found to proceed when only "trace" quantities of ammonia are present in the system. The kinetics of the extraction process appear to be controlled by a mixed (reaction and diffusion) mechanism.

"In response to a severe regional drought and in preparation for the further decline of water levels in Southern Nevada’s Lake Mead, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) built a new intake system to ensure water supply to Las Vegas and its surrounding communities. In 2015, design began on the Low Lake Level Pumping Station (L3PS) that will move the water from this lower intake, ensuring operability of the water delivery system despite these declining lake levels. The L3PS Project includes a 159-meter-deep shaft, a large underground chamber, and 34-each 152-meter-deep, 2.4-meter-diameter drilled well shafts to be constructed in highly faulted and fractured ground. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method was chosen to facilitate early contractor involvement in the design process to address the significant challenges and risks anticipated on this US$650 million Project. This paper describes the CMAR selection process; the CMAR involvement during design and benefits resulting from that involvement; and the unique collaborative effort among the owner, engineer, program manager and CMAR used to evaluate and select the best design approach, preferred underground construction methods, and coordinated geotechnical baseline report. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven of the United States’ western states rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River Basin. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished."

Alunorte is a metallurgical-grade alumina refinery located in northern Brazil. This plant which was designed to produce 1.1 million mtpy of calcined alumina, started operation in July 1995. A process information system was installed before refinery start-up. It has been a main factor in process improvements, which resulted in an increase in production from 1.1 to 1.5 million mtpy. This system has been particularly useful for analyzing data and allowing retrieval of data by process engineers. This paper describes how a quality monitoring system to evaluate all aspects and stages of production, as well as alumina silo level and blending percentage, was developed. This system was designed to give support to ISO 9002 certification, which happened in December 1998. The quality monitoring system was developed using Microsoft Excel 7.0 and makes extensive use of VBA macro. The primary users of the system are shift foremen, managers and engineers, who use it to track the process and avoid variations in alumina quality.

Construction of the MBTA Red Line Extension through Somerville, MA, called for driving twin tube tunnels through a zone of approximately 83m (273 ft) with mixed face conditions. While the majority of the tunnels were driven through competent hard rock using drill and blast techniques, the mixed face zone was advanced using floating crown bars for primary support. The overburden consisted of medium clay, underlain by water bearing glacial till, over a sloping bedrock surface. Due to the unusual nature of the construction techniques, a program was undertaken by the Contractor to monitor ground movement and stresses in the temporary steel supports. This paper presents a description of the instrumentation employed, as well as the measured ground movements and support stresses. Additionally, the tunneling techniques are briefly presented and commented upon. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnel Contract is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authorities (MBTA) Red Line Extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge to the Alewife Brook Parkway via Somerville. The 5.1km (17,000 ft) Red Line Extension consists of four major new stations, three of which will be interlinked via tunnel construction, and the remaining station will be the last link of an open cut portion, and a terminal point for this phase of the extension. This 866m (2,790 ft) portion began at Porter Square in Cambridge and rose at a 4% slope through Somerville, terminating at the new Davis Square Station. Twin tube tunnels were constructed through 763m (2,517 ft) of rock and 83m (273 ft) of mixed face conditions at the Davis Square end. Figure 1 presents a plan view of the entire contract.

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnelboring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

The United States Potash Company was the original discoverer and first producer of under-ground mined potash ore in North America and commenced active production of potash in 1931. In July 1956, the company merged with United States Borax & Chemical Corporation and is now a Division of that corporation. The mine is located twenty-two miles east of the city of Carlsbad and the refinery is located sixteen miles south of the mine, The mine was placed where the ore was found and the refinery placed where there was sufficient water for a dissolving and re-crystallization plant. For twenty-three of the last twenty-six years, the potash ore was mined with the room and pillar method, taking approximately sixty percent extraction and leaving forty percent in pillars. These pillars are generally fifty-eight feet by fifty-eight feet square. Three years ago, it was decided that removal of as large an extraction as possible from these pillars should be commenced.

The authors aim to analyze the behavior of smart sensors using Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) infrastructure in hazardous applications, because of their advantages regarding safety, expansion and Quality of Service (QoS). Initially, some constraints are discussed for these applications. Then, the possibility is analyzed of using 2.4 GHz TCP/IP based transmission for sending data out of an industrial area. In this setup the authors evaluated the round-trip implementation (which requires a database of packet lengths), related to the delay introduced by the radio transmission algorithms from 802.15.4, and 802.11d/g protocols. Tuning results of different varying time-delays were compared to the constant delay cases from the literature (Deák, 2003; Lincoln, 2003). Both the hardware and software setups are implemented. Based on TinyOS specific software for hardware checking/ initiating communication/ starting/ closing measurements the authors have developed separate/combined procedures for testing the integrated devices. Measured time delay is presented and analyzed, for both beaconed and non-beaconed 802.15.4 transmission, with power optimization criteria. By testing two different implementations (Zhang et al., 2001), (ATmega256 RZAV - 256KB flash memory, the CC2420 IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee-compliant RF transceiver core - 128KB flash memory) the authors have found some time delay variations as a result of local processing by the ZigBee controller with an amount of flash memory. The work is also focused on adapting industrial measuring standard systems to the smart sensors, but not only through the 4-20 mA standard.

The impact of conversion on the coal industry can be summarized very briefly: We are going to have to mine an awful lot of coal. Fortunately, the United States has the coal reserves available, and given the right conditions, we can mine it. The coal reserves of the United States are enormous. If we consider them on the basis of proved reserves, using the standards of the petroleum industry--that is, resources mapped and explored and recoverable with present techniques at close to present costs--and compare that with the reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88 per cent of the proved recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium, so long as the uranium is used in burner reactors. If we consider resources on the basis of "ultimate recoverable" reserves, that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs--and if we include those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery--coal still accounts for 74 per cent of the national total. We have built a hydrocarbon economy in which about 76 per cent of our total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas, and about 20 per cent by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low and, assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20 per cent supplied by coal may increase dramatically. We already import nearly a quarter of the petroleum we consume, and the chief source of additional imports seems to lie in the politically unstable Middle East. Natural gas is in even shorter supply, and the problems of importing it seem at least as difficult as those of oil. The fact is, the United States is already relying to an increasing extent on foreign fuel sources. There is an obvious national risk in making an important part of energy supply hostage to foreign governments of uncertain tenure and friendliness. The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world's major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.
