Mechanisms involved in the depression of the sulfides: pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite with potassium permanganate have been investigated. Flotation tests were conducted using potassium amyl xanthate, Z-6, and pine oil in the absence and presence of potassium permanganate at around pH = 6. 5 naturally yielded by the sulfides in the pulp. On the basis of crystal chemistry considerations, the amount of xanthate adsorbed by the sulfides depends on the amount of sulfur and metal ions present on the surface; thus, the avidity of the sulfides for xanthate should increase in the order: sphalerite C chalcopyrite 4 galena 4 pyrite, and the ease of depression response to the permanganate action should be in the same order. Depression of the sulfides in the system occurs primarily due to the removal of the collector ions by the permanganate ions to form manganese dioxide and dixanthogen according to the reaction: 3 M(RX)2 + 2 Mn04 + 4 H20 2 ? MnO2 + 3(RX-XR) + 3 M+2 8OH where M represents the metal ion, RX the xanthate ion and (RX-XR) the dixanthogen molecule. Results seem to indicate that the permanganate ions play a triple role in the system: (1) they convert xanthate ions into dixanthogen, (2) they further oxidize the mineral surface and (3) if present in excess, they may oxidize the xanthate beyond the dixanthogen stage with the formation of CO2, H20 and SO4. All sulfides, except for chalcopyrite, showed a depression response in the order predicted regardless of the order of addition of xanthate and permanganate reagents. Chalcopyrite did not depress as easily; this behavior may be due to the avidity of the colloidal MnO2 to adsorb Cu+2 ions on its surface, this would destabilize the colloid making it coalesce with the formation of a layer of precipitated MnO2 on the surface of the mineral. The presence of this layer would prevent further action of the permanganate ions on chalcopyrite.

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.

INTRODUCTION Early in the morning of July 16, 1979, there was a breach in the earthen retaining dam of a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation's (UNC's) Church Rock uranium mill. The acidified liquid and tailings slurry spilled through the damaged portion of the retaining wall into an arroyo that is a tributary to the Rio Puerco river system. The Rio Puerco runs through Gallup, New Mexico, and eventually crosses the New Mexico-Arizona border (Fig. 1). On its way to Gallup, the Rio Puerco and its tributaries pass through land with a checkerboard pattern of ownership, with portions owned or leased by the Navajos, individuals, the Bureau of Land Management, and the State. In terms of tailings liquid volume (3.6 x 108L; 94 million gal), the UNC spill ranks as one of the largest. The mass of solids released in the slurry (10.0 x 105 kg; 1 100 tons) appears to be close to the median for accidents of this kind, however [U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), 1979]. The UNC first opened its Church Rock uranium mill in 1977 on land adjacent to acreage belonging to the Navajo tribe. The mill, which is next to the UNC Church Rock mine, is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) northeast of Gallup, New Mexico (Fig. 1). Gallup, a town of 18 000 people, is the closest population center. The region surrounding the plant site is sparsely populated by Navajos, at a density of approximately 5.8 persons/km2 (15 persons/sq mile). The UNC mill and mines employ approximately 650 persons, and the adjacent Kerr-McGee uranium mine employs about 300. The UNC mill normally processes 3.2 x 106kg/day (3 500 tons/day) of uranium ore, depositing the acidified tailings slurry in a series of three earthen holding ponds. The tailings ponds are located east of the pipeline arroyo that feeds into the Rio Puerco approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the southernmost tailings dam. The liquid portion of the tailings slurry evaporates in the ponds; hence, under normal conditions, there is no surface flow from the holding ponds to the arroyo. Both runoff from the plant site after heavy rains and possible seepage from the tailings ponds may deliver radionuclides to the arroyo-river system, however. The dam across the southernmost tailings pond was considered to be in keeping with the state of the art. However, the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division (NMEID) had warned UNC about dangers of locating the pond over a heterogeneous geological formation. The state Engineer's Office approved of the site only after UNC agreed to strict design criteria. Others have pointed to dangers of constructing earthen dams for impoundment of uranium mill tailings (Carter, 1978). Causes of the dam break were multiple: the UNC mill filled the tailings pond to a level that exceeded permit criteria; the tailings pond was lined improperly; the dam was constructed using clay that was compacted excessively, resulting in cracking and subsequent seepage; and the unstable substrate beneath the dam permitted differential settling. The UNC Church Rock mine has continuously released dewatering effluent into the pipeline arroyo at a rate of 88.3 L/sec (1 400 gal/min) since 1968. Before 1975 this effluent was not treated; after 1975 it received precipitation treatment for removal of Ra-226. Radionuclides are also released into the river system through the dewatering of the Kerr-McGee uranium mine 1.6 km (1.0 mile) north of the UNC mill. During usual mining operations, approximately 227 L/sec (3 600 gal/min) are released into the pipeline arroyo and subsequently into the Rio Puerco. The Kerr-McGee mine began continuous release of dewatering effluent in January 1972. In 1974 Kerr-McGee began Ra-226 precipitation treatment of its dewatering releases, but NMEID data indicate that treatment has often been incomplete. The effluent from both mines has been responsible for transforming the downstream portion of the Rio Puerco from a sporadically dry riverbed into a continuously flowing stream and has contributed to the current levels of background radiation along the river system (Table 1). This paper will summarize the postspill monitoring efforts and relate the assessment of this spill to the general question of evaluating the health effects of nuclear fuel-cycle wastes. The data pertaining to the measurement of radionuclides in the Church Rock environment and the radionuclide concentrations in animals will appear in forthcoming reports. CHURCH ROCK HEALTH EFFECTS ASSESSMENT APPROACH The initial health effects evaluation involved identifying the radionuclides that were released into the river system from the tailings pond. Table 1 lists the State of New Mexico maximum permissible radionuclide concentrations for liquids released to unrestricted areas, the typical tailings liquid concentrations, and postspill river water concentrations. The tailings liquid contained comparatively high levels of Th-230, Ra-226, Pb-210, and Po-210--all of which, according to postspill river water samples, had exceeded the state maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) at one time or another. After the radionuclides in the tailings were identified, pathways through which humans could be exposed were clarified. This paper describes a process for separating non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper and zinc, from other residential and industrial waste by means of permanent magnets. Although the separator may be used in the recovery of non-ferrous metals from auto scrap, most of the testing to date has been aimed at recovery of non-ferrous metals from municipal solid waste, especially recovery of aluminum from the heavy fraction of a resource recovery plant. In most resource recovery plants the incoming solid waste material is first shredded and then air classified into a light and a heavy fraction. The light fraction which contains mostly paper, cardboard, etc., can be used either as a fuel for power generation or in the production of new paper products. The heavy fraction which remains consists mostly of glass, ceramics, wood, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals may be removed from the heavy fraction by conventional magnetic separators. After primary shredding, most of the glass and ceramic is fine in size and may be screened away leaving a residue of wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals. This residual heavy fraction is the input material for the separator described in the present paper.

This paper introduces a computer simulation that extends the use of microcomputer systems for mine ventilation planning. The program was developed as part of an ongoing study to produce a simulation model that would determine the optimum duties of a main fan and a booster fan without requiring the trial-and-error runs that are necessary with currently available programs. To use the new program, the user specifies the location of one main fan and one booster fan, and the minimum required airflows in any number of working places. The computer determines the fan duties that will maintain the required airflows at the lowest operating costs without causing undesired recirculation. The methodology of the program and an example showing how it can be applied are presented.

The carbothermic reduction of celestite is the first step in producing many strontium products. The way materials move in the rotary kiln has an essential effect on the carbothermic reduction efficiency as well as the temperature. In this study, the reduction of celestite ore and excess carbon blend in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln was investigated. In the experiments carried out at three different temperatures, the rotational speed and slope of the furnace tube were altered, and their effects on the reaction efficiency were examined. The leachability of the reduced powders and the content of the unburned coke indicated the optimal parameters for the reaction.When the speed was increased to 10 rpm, the powders weremoremobile in the stack and could react more easily with the furnace atmosphere. According to the results, celestite can be reduced by carbon at temperatures of 1000–1200 °C, at rates of between 5% and 75%. The maximumreaction yield (75%) was obtained with a slope of 2° and a rotational speed of 6 rpm at 1100 °C.

A glance at the accompanying table and a review of contributors' comments suggest that the industrial minerals industry is recovering from the recession of the past few years. Actually, the total value of nonmetal production in 1983 was $15.5 billion, up 10% over 1982. Nonmetallics still have not recovered to 1981's high of $25.3 billion, but at least it is on the way up. It is significant that cement (+20%), clays (+13%), gypsum (+16%), sand and gravel (+12%), sodium carbonate (+7%), and crushed stone (+11%) are up. These commodities are largely used in the housing and construction industries. Raw steel and steel mill products, iron ore production and castings, and purchased scrap are showing improvement and increased in value last year. They are, however, still not up to the high of 1981. These industries consume considerable amounts of many industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, fluorspar as fluxes, and many types of refractories.

It was previously reported that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, a Florida dolomite sample was examined, and it was determined that palygorskite associated with dolomite was responsible for its flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of dolomite samples from different locations was made by electrokinetic, XRD and FT-IR analyses, and the relevance of these characteristics to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

This case study describes the work done at the University of Arizona on the development of a computer mine model for an irregularly shaped and spotty ore deposit. The purpose of the work was to develop techniques for modeling any highly irregular deposit, for which the regular 3D fixed block model is not well suited. The deposit contained complex geology consisting of sedimentary beds that had been faulted, thrusted, and intruded by igneous rocks (see Fig. 1). The physical dimensions of the modeled ore body were 1067 m (3500 ft) along the N-S direction and 914 m (3000 ft) along the E-W direction. Topographic relief in the modeled area was approximately 274 m (900 ft). The highest grade of ore was found near the surface with mineralization extending down to approximately 152 m (500 ft) below. Using a fixed bench height of 12 m (40 ft), the model required 25 levels with the highest elevation being at 1286 m (4220 ft). Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the developed computer model of the ore deposit. The particular modeling approach selected for this deposit was the 3D irregular block model.* This meant that only the dimension of bench height was fixed at 12 m (40 ft). Irregular size blocks in the form of polygons were adopted in the model to describe the ore zones and geologic contacts. The following sections of this chapter describe some of the techniques used in modeling.

"The world’s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), at the time of her launch in 2012, the TBM locally referred to as “Bertha,” is incapacitated due to mechanical failure. Bertha’s stoppage places her 25m below the surface between the aged Alaskan Way Viaduct and the failing Seattle Seawall. Accessing Bertha with a vertical shaft provides the best approach to access all facets needed for repairs and will allow the full removal of Bertha’s cutter head and related inner workings. Due to the limited area above the tunnel alignment and physical constraints created by existing infrastructure, the dimensions of the otherwise symmetrical shaft are heavily impacted, thereby requiring special attention to design and layout. Consequently, the shaft design required a combination of 3m, 2.5m, 2.2m, 1.5m and 1m diameter unreinforced drilled secant piles coupled with various ground improvement techniques and dewatering, to fully satisfy the shoring design requirements. This paper will describe the shaft installation procedures, equipment used and pitfalls encountered while undertaking access shaft construction of this magnitude. INTRODUCTION Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal meters of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly over 1.6 m per day. It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s 2nd largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m, averaging 1.4 m per day, and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m mark and Bertha was now averaging 3.6 m per day, achieving as much as 12.8 m of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on December 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt. Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by WSDOT to monitor ground water conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

"?irovski Vrh" Uranium deposit in Slovenia is type of mineralized sediments in ore bearing belts of deflected S-structure, in which the belt is less than 25% mineralized. Ore bodies of irregular small thickness, unreliably contoured, made difficult estimation of correct contours, which are necessary for design and exploitation works. The deposit was explored by vertical boreholes made at the surface and by boreholes fanned from drives. For the purpose of application of this estimation method, 1 m composites have been made in slices which were parallel to the referential belt plane. Estimation was made for 1,5m x 1,5m x lm blocks which do correspond to the size of the containers in the ore transport stage. Two variables have been used: the first, indicator of function (ore=1, waste material =0) and kriging method; the second, logarithmical content of Uranium and Minimum Mean Square Error Estimation (MMSEE) method. Based on estimated values of those variables, probability of ore quantity as well as Uranium content over determined cut-off were calculated for each block. Those two parameters enable determination of the most probable form of the ore body in ecah one metter slice. Estimation of sixteen small blocks in a large 1,5m x 1,5m x 1m block made possible estimation of ore quantity and its content for the determined cut-off, as well as categorization of exploration. This method is being used for estimation of ore reserves and planning of exploration operations. The described' methodology was tested in an exploitation block.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining decided to close an open-pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota using a passive-treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. More than 50 Aft (55 million st) of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages. Before the closure, the annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but they are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH levels range from 5 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH levels greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential that a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to more than 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992. They have removed 60% to 90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Because mine-drainage problems can continue for more than 100 years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland-treatment systems within seven years.

"The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."

At the termination of mining, the quality of ground water in the ore-zone aquifer must be returned to a condition predetermined by the permitting agency. To immobilize the redox-sensitive elements (e.g., uranium, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum), it has been suggested that a reducing agent be circulated through the leached ore zone. We have conducted laboratory experiments to test the ability of sodium sulfide as such a reducing agent. Sodium sulfide lowered the redox potential of the effluent such that insoluble minerals containing the redox-sensitive elements should be stable. The uranium concentration of the solution decreased by more than three orders of magnitude. In column experiments, by the time 10 pore volumes of the sulfide solution had flowed through, sulfide minerals were forming. The experimental results indicate that the addition of sodium sulfide should cause chemical reduction of the leached sediments, thereby producing long-term stability of the ground-water/sediment system.

The new 9300 TPD sinter plant being built for China Steel Corporation is incorporating the latest computer technology for plant control systems. The control system will use a central computer and distributed micro-processors to control instrument loops and switching logic in the blending yard and sintering plant. All plant functions, including combustion and fan controls, will be controlled by remote microprocessors located throughout the plant, and connected by a communications link to the centrally located computer and control room. The design, programming, construction and operation of a microprocessor based control system presents new challenges to the control engineer. With microprocessors in the control system, more power exists in the individual control loop and many supervisory functions may be added at the loop level. The specification of the microprocessor system and the resolution of hardware design and control system design can lead to development of powerful systems capable of higher level control and optimization functions

The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has same impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

Lingering effects of the 1990 oil shock that included overbuilding and corporate and individual financial distress caused the Gross Domestic Product to fall slightly to $5.67 billion (US billion = l09). With 254 million people - 697,000 in mining and petroleum - the US has more than 100 million dwelling units and 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts fell 15% to one million units. New car production fell 11 % to 5.4 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8% to 3.4 million units. The inflation rate was 3%, while the prime rate of interest was 8.5%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) changed as follows: -fuels and related products and power down 1% to 8l, • metals and metal products down 2% to 120, • chemicals and allied products up 2% to 126, and • non-metallic mineral products up to 2% to 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, fell 5% to 2.8 billion bbl. Domestic petroleum production rose 1% to 3.6 billion bbl. Petroleum supplied about 39% of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 22%. The National Energy Strategy was announced in February 1991. Its purpose is to encourage domestic production of fossil fuels and nuclear and renewable energy and to stimulate efficiencies in use. Congress continued to debate the strategy and took no action. Coal production fell 3% to 902 Mt (994 million st). About 60% of that came from surface operations. Seventy-eight percent of the total was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked.

In 1982, the US Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) to provide for the development of an underground repository for spent nuclear fuel. This development will be managed by the US Department of Energy. In 1986, the President selected three areas for site characterization to determine their suitability for the development of an underground repository. Those sites were: (1) a site in volcanic tuff located at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, (2) a site in bedded salt located in Deaf Smith County in Texas, and (3) a site in basalt located in Hanford, WA. At present, conceptual repository designs are being developed for each site. A key element of a repository design is the underground ventilation system required to support construction, nuclear waste emplacement, and potential waste retrieval. This paper describes the preliminary ventilation system designed for the repository in tuff. The concept provides separate ventilation systems for the construction and waste emplacement activities. The paper further describes the means by which acceptable environmental conditions will be reestablished to allow reentry into previously closed rooms for the purpose of inspection, maintenance, or retrieval.

International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s New Wales operation near Mulberry, FL, is reportedly the world's largest concentrated phosphate chemical fertilizer and phosphate-based animal feed ingredients complex. Its latest expansion represents a $191-million investment. Two Northwest draglines were put to work at the operation early last year and, according to a company spokesman, total production from the units have more than doubled that from older rigs. This article describes how the draglines are used and provides details on the New Wales operation. The principle product at New Wales is phosphoric acid, produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with sulfuric acid in large concrete attack tanks. For each ton of phosphoric acid produced, New Wales must dispose of about 4.5 t (5 st) of waste gypsum. New Wales stores the gypsum on-site, and uses durable Northwest draglines to help handle the material. Two Units Maintain the Gypsum Stack After the gypsum is separated from the phosphoric acid through 23-m-diam (75-ft-diam) vacuum filters, it is mixed with water from a 121-hm2 (300-acre) recirculating cooling pond and, in slurry form, is pumped to the top of a 121-hm2 (300-acre) gypsum stack located adjacent to the cooling pond. The slurry contains mostly gypsum (CaSO4), with small traces of silica and other elements. The water at this point is corrosive, containing from 1-2% phosphoric acid. Its pH usually ranges from 1.5-2.0. Water drains from the gypsum stack into the cooling pond. Only about 15% of the pond's water, however, comes from the gypsum stack; the balance is from various sources throughout the complex and is held in the pond to cool before being returned for reuse in the plant. About 97% of New Wales' water needs come from this recycling program. The gypsum remains on the stack, inert, ready for future processing if it becomes economically feasible. Throughout the handling process, Northwest draglines work around the stacks' rim, continually directing the waste flow and digging out dried solids to heighten the perimeter dike to provide more storage volume. When wet, gypsum is extremely soft. When dry, it compacts well and provides footing with enough bearing capacity to support the machines. Processing at New Wales started in 1975 and the gypsum storage area has already been built up 12 m (40 ft) above grade. A total of 14.8 km3 (12,000 acre-ft) of solids are now stored.
