For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

"The Regional Connector project is a complex subway light-rail project that runs through the heart of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The design-build contract was awarded in April 2014 to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc., and their designer team consisting of Hatch Mott McDonald (HMM) and subconsultants. The project broke ground on Sept. 30, 2014 and is expected to be completed in winter 2021-2022. The main components of the project consist of 6.4-m (21-ft) diameter twin-bored tunnels, three crosspassages, a 87-m (287-ft) long crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations, and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda and 1st Streets. The project map is shown in Fig. 1. The design and construction challenges associated with each of these main components are discussed in the following sections.Project designTunnels. The Regional Connector tunnels are located primarily within the Fernando formation consisting predominantly of extremely weak to very weak, massive, clayey siltstone. About 305 m (1,000 ft) of tunnels on the eastern end are in alluvium and mixed face of Fernando formation and alluvium. The tightest curve of the tunnel alignment is 178 m (583 ft) in radius. The tunnels were designed with a reinforced precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) to be used with an earth balance pressurized (EPB) tunnel boring machine. The PCTL ring is 5.5 m (18 ft-10 in.) inside diameter, 27 cm (10.5 ft) thick, 1.5 m (5 ft) long, and consists of five segments and a key. The segments were designed with 6,500 psi concrete, 80 ksi yield strength wire rebar, convex joint surfaces to enhance seismic performance, and a dosage of 1.7 lbs polypropylene microfibers per cubic yard of concrete for fire resistance. The rings are designed with a right ring and left ring pattern and a taper of 3.8 cm (1.5 ft) to allow for alignment curve negotiation. Figure 2 shows typical sections of the PCTL. The structural lining design was modeled using FLAC 3D. Four consecutive rings were modeled with 32 dowel connection. Loading considered in the lining design includes temporary ground load during excavation, long-term ground loads, seismic loads and train loads. The seismic loads on the PCTL were simulated with the racking deformation applied at vertical boundaries of the model. Due to variation of geologic condition along the tunnel alignment and different surcharge requirements, three different types of reinforcement (typical, heavy and extra heavy) were designed. The typical type PCTL was required in Fernando formation, the heavy type was required in alluvium or mixed-face condition, and the extra heavy type was required in alluvium and underneath the Japanese Village Plaza where a surcharge of 1,000 psf was required."

In 1967 a large kaolin deposit was discovered on the Jari River, a tributary of the Amazon, in the territory of Amapa in Brazil. The kaolin occurs in the Barreiras Series of Pliocene age and is part of the Belterra Clay. The kaolin was drilled and tested, and today a modern processing plant is producing over 150,000 tons per year of high quality paper coating clay. Some of the problems associated with the mine development, processing, personnel, and marketing of this remote kaolin deposit are discussed. The mineralogy and physical properties of the Jari kaolin deposit are also described.

The past year has been a strange one for the fertilizer industry of the world and the United States. Listening to news stories, you would think the sky is falling on the world's agriculture and probably conclude that we should have had an exceptionally poor fertilizer season. In some respects, we did. Prices were low, profits were low, and in some cases nonexistent, but volume was good. We heard much in the press about the farmers' credit crunch. The truth of the matter is that only 6.6 percent of the U.S. farmers have debt-equity ratios of 70 percent or more, and a large percentage of our farmers have absolutely no debt but operate entirely on their own cash assets.

The use of heavy media organic solvents to recover coal from its attendant gangue is hardly new. DuPont built a pilot plant using pentachloroethane in 1936 at Weston Coal Company, Weston Breaker, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. That's almost half a century ago. Since that time, it has become common practice to utilize similar classes of chemicals in laboratory separations of coal samples. It is the objective of this paper to discuss some specific separations on both pilot and laboratory scale on samples representing different classifications of coal. These separations have been carried out on coarse (+4 M), middling (4 x 20 M), and fine (-20 M) coal samples. The coal samples tested include Pennsylvania anthracite; Pennsylvania, Indiana and Colorado bituminous; Wyoming sub-bituminous; and Texas lignite. Other chlorinated solvents were used to vary the specific gravity of separation.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. I consider it an honour to be the opening speaker in this afternoon's session on "Canadian Exploration". I also think it most appropriate that this joint meeting of the MMIJ and AIME should consider this subject, because Canada is a major exporter of mineral products and Japan and the United States are our two largest customers. Clearly, therefore, both countries have a valid interest in developments on the Canadian minerals scene. I represent the Mineral Development Sector of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I will therefore speak from the point of view of the Federal Government. At this point I would like to acknowledge the help and constructive criticism I have received from several of my colleagues in Mineral Development Sector in the preparation of this paper. In any discussion of exploration in Canada, it is essential to emphasize at the outset that Canada has a federal system of government, with powers shared between Ottawa and the provinces. Under our constitution, the federal government has jurisdiction over the north, and over offshore areas, while the provinces own the natural resources within their boundaries. They control the systems of land acquisition for exploration and the terns under which mining titles are issued, and are therefore able to determine the rate and conditions of exploration and development of these resources. It follows that the Federal Government can influence the exploration and development of the provincial resources only indirectly by consultation with provincial authorities. However, once the resources are developed and begin to flow to market, the Federal Government can exert a much stronger influence because of its constitutional right to control both inter-provincial and international trade, as well as through its general fiscal and tax powers.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mine that uses large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity and distance. The system was also used to provide historical information to plan the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. The Coteau Properties Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corp. The company was formed in 1972 to supply lignite from its Beulah-Hazen coal reserve to a coal gasification project and an electrical generating facility located near Beulah, ND. The reserve consists of a single coal seam between 3 and 7 m (10 to 23 ft) thick. The overburden above the coal is predominately glacial tills and clays and ranges from 6 m (20 ft) to more than 60 m (200 ft) thick.

Shallow water covers for preventing acid production in tailings are based on the principle of minimizing oxygen availability. Resuspension of material from the tailings bed may result in increased oxidation and metal releases since dissolved oxygen is at near saturation levels in the water cover. Resuspension can be caused by waves and currents strong enough to mobilize the surface of the tailings bed. Tailings resuspension was measured with sediment traps in the Upper Cell of the Heath Steele site near Mirarnichi, New Brunswick Canada. Although significant amounts of resuspended tailings were collected in all traps, analysis of resuspended solids and bed tailings suggests that for the observed wind conditions resuspension did not occur at locations where the water cover depth was greater or equal to 1.0 m. Currents were likely responsible for the transport of resuspended tailings from shallower areas to locations where the water cover was deeper than 1.0 m.

Availability of cement in the industrialized and developing countries of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia for the 1975 - 1980 period are discussed in this report. Quantitative data includes production, imports, exports, and apparent consumption. An account of new cement plants and plant extensions is provided. The aphorism that provided the title of this paper is probably a couple of hundred years old, but it still expresses a fundamental truth in the metals industry. This truth will be illustrated through a brief review of the major developments in the extractive metallurgy of the oxidized ores of nickel - the "laterite" ores. While the details to be discussed are for the most part specific to nickel, a close parallel with other commodities - particularly in recent years - will be apparent even to those whose interest in nickel itself is slight. Thus it is hoped that this paper will be stimulating, at the least, to anyone who is concerned with the implementation of process improvement, "Invention" in the present context means any change from "conventional" process technology that shows a reasonable chance of reducing costs, increasing revenues, or both, in the production of a commodity. This can be anything from a simple rearrangement of flowsheet steps to a completely different basis for processing. And the result may reduce costs by more efficient use of energy or labor or reagents; may increase revenues by better recovery of the primary product or by introducing the recovery of previously ignored by-products; may insure sales volume (and thereby cash flow) through higher product purity or an improved product form. "Necessity" is the perceived need to attain at least one of these classes of results. This perception of necessity, however, varies widely from management to management and from project to project.

Kaolin-based pigments are the most widely used pigments in the paper industry. Several types are available and include standard hydrous, delaminated, calcined, chemically-structured, and most recently, composite pigments. Within each category, a spectrum of products is available to satisfy the application requirements of paper producers. The paper industry has a broad range of applications including fillers in woodfree and groundwood-containing papers, pigmented size press applications, ultra-lightweight and lightweight coated papers, coated merchant papers, cast coated papers and coated paperboard. Each application has its own set of performance criteria and suppliers must work with mills to identify appropriate product(s) to fulfill these requirements.

Although the fundamental principles of hindered bed classifiers are relatively simple, the complex interactions between the operating parameters provide a degree of difficulty that hinders the ability for on-line plant optimization. Thus, a dynamic population balance model was developed for determining the hindered settling velocity of particles varying in density and size. The steady-state results of the model include partition curves as a function of particle size and density as well as metallurgical data. A statistical comparison of the simulation results with those obtained from industrial units reveal a high level of accuracy with adjusted R2 values greater than 0.95.

The semi-autogenous grinding circuit at the Utah Mines Limited, Island Copper Operation, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is described. Since start-up of the operation in 1971 grinding circuit throughput has been progressively increased from the initial design rate of 30,000 to the current average 45,000 tonnes per day (t/d) of porphyry copper ore. Key developments and modifications in operating and maintenance practice that have contributed to this increase are reviewed.

To evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening, a 9-m- (30-ft-) long drift was constructed in the unsaturated fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing finite volumes of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. This paper addresses the impact on performance of column height (H), and column height to diameter (H/D) ratio by modelling the effect of HID on mixing and consequently on recovery and grade. Mineral recovery increases with increasing H/D ratio for a constant column volume and feed flowrate, while the concentrate grade decreases to a minor extent. Columns 10-15m in height with H/D-10 are well suited for feed rates 150-600 L/min. Maximum H/D is determined by the gas carrying capacity, an important consideration for pilot units where H/D?200.

The Mont Klahoyo magnetite deposit is located about 600 km northwest of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. During an exploration period ending in 1977 an international joint venture group investigated the deposit and proved reserves of 670 million tons grading 36% iron. The deposit, occurring at the northeast end of the Baoubly-Kiriao chain of Precambrian iron formations, is associated with amphibolites, pyroxenites and gneisses of the Liberian Shield. At Mont Klahoyo occur two separate iron formations of which the lower member is the ore body. This lower member consists of a highly metamorphosed - banded quartz-magnetite iron formation in which iron silicate bands alternate with beds of quartz-magnetite. mphibolite-pyroxenites and sillimanite-cordierite-garnet gneisses form hanging and footwall rocks. The iron formation has been folded into an elongated overturned "Z" shaped major drag fold with axes trending and plunging approximately northeast. Beds are vertical or dip steeply to the southeast. The ore zone has an average thickness of 130 m and outcrops intermittently over a distance of approximately 5.5 km. Based upon detailed studies of drill cores and the results of ore dressing test work, eight stratigraphic units, identified as K-1 to K-8, are recognizable in the iron formation. Four interbedded units are low grade silicate zones (silicate facies) with the remaining quartz-magnetite units (oxide facies) repre¬senting the important ore zones of the Mont Klahoyo deposit. The ore-bearing "K" units are subdivided further, based upon their specific lithologies, iron content and concentration characteristics, into eleven ore types. The identification of these ore types is considered particularly important to mine planning and flowsheet design. A cap of oxidized materials overlies the primary quartz-magnetite iron formation but no enrichment has occurred. It is proposed that the Mont Kalhoyo iron formations were deposited, possibly chemically, in a volcanic environment as a siliceous iron formation with volcanism providing the primary source of iron and silica. Metamorphism converted the siliceous iron formation to a relatively coarse-grained quartz-magnetite-silicate iron formation.

In the short period of one mans? career we have seen specifications for bulk material handling systems and equipment grow from two or three pages to as much as two or three volumes for a single contract. The old 'short form' described what the purchaser expected the equipment to do. The long form does the same but also includes nut, bolt, and lockwasher depth of detail. What are the events that led to this proliferation of verbiage, and does it benefit the buyer in the final analysis? Is there a better way to purchase complex equipment while ensuring the highest quality for the dollar spent?

The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.
