Simulation of coal preparation circuits is becoming a widely practiced technique used for the design of coal preparation plants. On a much more limited basis, simulators are finding application in off-line process control. A typical application in the latter category involves inputting projected coal washability data for a shift into the simulator and using the software to optimize product quality and recovery within a range of predefined specifications. The plant is then operated at SG?s of separation determined from the simulation exercise for the one shift time period. This procedure is useful in that it incorporates some form of advanced planning into preparation plant operations. There is an attempt made to reflect changes in feed coal quality on a shift by shift basis rather than continually running the plant near design specifications with changes in SG?s of separation being made in response to an inadequate sampling program which only provides a spot measurement of material that has already passed through the plant. Instead of instituting changes on a shift by shift basis, NHI has proposed a method whereby monitoring three major operating parameters, * Feedrate to jig * Flowrate from hydrocyclone overflow * Density from cyclone overflow the ongoing plant operating performance can be accurately predicted on a continual basis, i.e., updated hourly. Using a distribution curve to predict the split between the clean coal and refuse from a given separator does not account for variations in efficiency that occur as a result of variations in operating parameters. NHI and Arch have studied the effect of both jig loading and solids content in the recirculating load to the jig on product quality. As a result, relatively simple measurements can be made on-line in a preparation plant which will provide input data to the simulation program that enables the prediction of jig/hydrocyclone circuit performance on a real time basis.

The mobility of gold and silver metals from refractory ores is very low due to free metal ions in their bodies that bind the transportable and free metal molecules or they are encapsulated in minerals such as sulfides, arsenosulfides, carbonaceous, and clayey materials which make it difficult to extract them. As known from the literature, the enrichment of oxide refractory gold, silver ores, Ag, and Au-rich flotation concentrated from sulfur refractory ores can be leached in the chloride-hypochlorite solutions. In this work, the leaching approach was studied to extract silver ions from refractory ores in the presence of hypochlorite media under high pressure. The mineralogical and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample indicated that the silver was encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals in fine sizes. In order to obtain the optimum leaching conditions for the silver ore, the effects of several parameters, namely, temperature, leaching time, NaCl and NaOCl concentration, solid ratio, and particle size on the leaching recovery were investigated in detail. The leaching experiments showed that the highest silver recovery of 62.35% was obtained under the following conditions: temperature of 150 °C, oxygen pressure of 1800 kPa, leaching time of 2 h, concentrations of 2 mol/dm3 and 0.4 mol/dm3 for NaCl and NaOCl, respectively, the solid ratio of 30%, and particle size (d80) 15 μm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the enrichment of refractory silver ores to extract the silver encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals could be possible in the chlorite-hypochlorite under high pressure, a relatively shorter leaching time compared to conventional cyanide leaching.

Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) supports an active R&D effort to improve the safe, productive mining of coal and to utilize coal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Attention will be focused on degasification of coal seams, continuous coal transport systems, earth sciences activities, and coal combustion. Brief mention will be made regarding the SO2 emissions control programs. The research program constitutes about 1.0% of Consol coal sales which positions Consol as the preeminent coal company supporting broad-based research addressing the full spectrum of the various problems associated with utilizing the nation's abundant reserves of economical, readily available fuel.

With over 260 tons of gold reserves, the Shuiyindong gold mine is one of the largest Carlin-type gold deposits in China. A particular challenge in the processing of the ore is the presence of carbonaceous compounds, which can cause substantial losses in recoveries via the preg-robbing and adsorption of gold. To investigate the structural properties of the native carbon and to compare between different characterization techniques for such compounds, pre- and post-flotation mineral samples containing 0.9–4.8% non-carbonate carbon from the Shuiyindong mine have been examined via mineralogical and thermogravimetric approaches, as well as spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine edge structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and preg-robbing measurements. NEXAFS and DRIFT yielded the most reliable results, indicating that 60–75% of the organic carbon in all samples consist of aliphatic alkenes with substantial unsaturated content, highly similar to activated carbon, with the remainder being graphitic and humic. Speciation by XPS was sub-optimal due to spectral overlaps between graphitic and aliphatic carbon, and between carboxylic and carbonate functionalities, while NMR spectroscopy could not provide reliable speciation of the carbon groups. The preg-robbing strength was strongly correlated to the aliphatic content and structural disorder in the carbon, while no such relationship was found with the graphitic and humic content.

In 1977, the Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the State of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the State. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by Bureau of Mines and State personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1-100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7 ½ min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than ±91.4m (5300 feet). Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). Figure 1 shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. Table I gives a comparison of acreage measured for sever- al mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS systems vs. aerial photo measurements.

he leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated by using the rotating disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effect of rotating speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions, and catalyst on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in view of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the potential-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was too slow at temperatures below 100°C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to be 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.

This paper describes the emergency water control measures used at Pegasus Gold's Zortman Landusky mine during the September 1986 flood. The amount of solution stored increased by approximately 78 165 m3 due to receiving 0.2134 m of rain in a 24 hour period. Three methods of water disposal will be discussed including continuous chlorination, batch chlorination, and reverse osmosis. A water management program will also be discussed.

Wet scrubbing of fine coal from Thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment for required clean-up of the fine particulate matter. Among then are: 1. The dust In the gases leaving the Thermal dryer cyclone-s is often extremely fine with high percentages of the total dust loading less than one (1) micron in size. 2, The flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulphur or higher. Therefore comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3. Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas e scrubber are continually being lowered while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the Thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend 4. The installation of a scrubbing system on Thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore the operating costs, that is, of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum.

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

Although production generally satisfies demand for rare earths, new markets may make undeveloped resources, particularly those rich in yttrium, more interesting. A Precambrian carbonalite orebody at Mountain Pass, California, has been the world's largest rare earth producer. Minor rare earth production comes from titanium placer mining in Florida and uranium mining in Canada. Prior to operations at Mountain Pass, North American production was mostly from placer deposits that constitute large, low-grade rare earth resources. Newly discovered North American rare metal resources in peralkaline igneous rocks are potential yttrium producers. Most of these resources are in a continent-wide belt of anorogenic magmatic rocks approximately coeval with mineralization at Mountain Pass. Other untapped rare each resources in North America are generally light rare earth-dominated and small or of low grade.

Refractory gold ores have been processed by bio-hydrometallurgical process at B.R.G.M. (Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières), Research Centre ,Orleans,France. The liberation of gold has been studied and the following steps for gold recovery improved. The overall process flowsheet has been established comprising different ways of treatment before the final discharge of the effluent. Iron and arsenic are successfully precipitated under well controlled Eh-pH conditions. Long term stability tests have been conducted and the research programme is to be continued with the crystallo graphic studies of the precipitates. Economical studies have been performed on the base of data obtained on parameters studies.

"INTRODUCTIONIn tunneling projects, pre-grouting is performed with the purpose of establishing an impervious zone around the tunnel periphery. This is obtained by reducing the penetrability of the most conductive fractures in the rock mass. The main attention, besides economy of the project, is given to limiting the ingress of water into the tunnel to a certain amount during construction s well as operation period. Failure in pre-grouting process may, according to Bruce (2007), significantly affect the project in terms of safety, performance, cost and time. In this respect, determination of design parameters (pumping pressure, properties of the mix and stop criteria) affects these projects significantly. In current practices, depends on the geological conditions and requirements of the project these parameters differ widely. Weaver (1991) recommends selection of design parameters, specifically grout injection pressures, based on site specific factors and the conditions at each specific hole into which grout is to be injected (grout hole logging and water pressure test data). Houlsby (1990) correlated the allowable grouting pressure to the quality of the rock mass and the rock cover above the grouted fracture. In his methodology, grouting should be continued until the maximum pressure was attained. Later, Lombardi and Deere (1993) introduced the Grout Intensity Number (GIN), which limits the combination of injection pressure and injected grout volume in order to control the energy induced in the fracture i.e. avoid fracture jacking. Even though the GIN method was a step forward in understanding of the mechanism of the fracture deformation, there are ambiguities connected to this methodology, thus determination of the intensity number is challenging (see e.g., Rafi and Stille 2015)a.A main problem when no theoretical solution is practiced is that effects from the chosen injection pressure, such as possible increases of transmissivity and changes in total grouting time, remains hidden in the overall grouting process. The question is if a high or a low pressure should be used to fulfil the requirements of the projects at the lowest possible cost."

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. The properties, origin and industrial uses of kaolin clay are briefly reviewed. The general waterwashed beneficiation process is described. Yost aspects of filtration and solids-liquid separation as practiced in the kaolin industry are mentioned along with devices that are currently in the developmental stage. The paper focuses heavily on the well known art of rotary vacuum filtration, including general construction and operating details. Devices under investigation that might be used to mechanically or electrically dewater clay slurries to higher cake solids levels than can be achieved with rotary vacuum filters are described briefly.

A roasting-leaching process has been developed for concentrating platinum group metals (PGM) from a PGM-containing ferroalloy. The optimized roasting conditions used a NaOH-to-ferroalloy mass ratio of 1.2 at 600 °C for 2 h. The roasted product mainly comprised Na4SiO4, NaFeO2 and Fe2O3. The iron oxide and sodium silicate associated with the roasted product were leached in water and dilute sulfuric acid solution, while the PGM was concentrated in the acid-leached residue. A PGM concentration of 23.4% was obtained with assaying, and the concentration factor of PGM from the ferroalloy to PGM concentration was greater than 9.

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

Mining activities at Kennecott and Park City are similar in that both districts began operation in the last half of the 18th century, and both operated on a large scale for many years. However, they are different for two important reasons. First, the mines in the Park City district were always underground. The city of Park City was above many of those mine workings. It remained in place after mining activity stopped, and as the town became an up-scale ski resort, property values increased and the tailings dumps became desirable building sites. In contrast, Kennecott eventually became an open pit mine, and the growing pit effectively consumed many of the small towns that had grown up around the underground workings. Even towns on the periphery of the open pit were razed to allow for the disposal of mine overburden. Second, almost all mining activity stopped in Park City in the early 1970s, just as the first rigorous environmental legislation in the United States was enacted. (The Ontario mine operated sporadically until 1982.) Many mine structures, waste dumps, tailings ponds and piles, and tunnels were simply abandoned as the mining companies ceased business or were bought out. Kennecott, on the other hand, has been in continuous operation for more than 120 years, so a closure plan hasn’t been finalized. Nonetheless, environmental and social problems have arisen, and the company has had to address them.

Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.

A model incorporating rate and residence time to describe the froth flotation process was used to provide data for the evaluation of various kinetic flotation models and to provide scale-up information from laboratory to industrial scale coal froth flotation. Rate constants were determined in laboratory and plant froth flotation tests and the residence time distribution was measured for a bank of four 21 ft 3 (0.6 m3 ) WEMCO cells treating Upper Freeport seam coal and a bank of four 300 ft 3 (8.5 m3 ) cells treating Lower Kittanning seam coal. It was found that a lag time for continuous flotation should be incorporated into scale up models and that a kinetic froth factor ratio of between about 2.0 and 2.8 should also be used to scale up data from laboratory to plant scale.
