Low flotation recovery and selectivity have been long-standing problems in the treatment of most ultra-fine phosphate ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of two ultra-fine Brazilian phosphate ores from Itafos’ Arraias project. These ores are predominantly composed of quartz, muscovite, apatite and a Ca-Al phosphate. As a result of fine phosphate dissemination and associated grinding requirements, column flotation was selected for the metallurgical test program to address the inherent limitations of fine particle flotation using conventional flotation cells. Accordingly, both benchtop Denver cell and laboratory column flotation tests were conducted to optimize their respective flotation responses. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical flotation. In column flotation, a P2O5 concentrate grade of 30.5-31.0% was yielded at a flotation recovery of 83.7-85.1% for the 38x0µm generated ultrafines. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include a higher degree of selectivity, increased recovery, and reduced collector dosage as compared to bench-scale mechanical flotation.

The primary purpose of the Prototype Installation Facility (PIF) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in this conceptual design was to test the magnets and other physics equipment. PIF was located in the northwest quadrant of the SSC 54 mile (87 km) main ring and consists of the first segment of tunnels, approximately 17,060 lineal feet (5.2 km) of 12 foot inner-diameter (ID) (3.7 m) tunnel, three 250 ± foot (60 m) deep shafts, connecting tunnels, and associated niches and alcoves. PIF would be the first portion of the main ring collider tunnel to be constructed. The geology, underground excavation conditions, underground facilities, and contractual considerations are discussed.

Discussion by R.J. Pindred In his paper, Davis presents an overview of risk. He also introduces the Capital Asset Processing Model (CAPM) as a foundation for selecting the appropriate discount rate for a mining project. While applying portfolio theory is more defensible than the ad hoc adjustment of discount rates, the CAPM is not a panacea. CAPM shortcomings [The CAPM, as Davis stated, is expressed in the equation: ri=rf+pi4) where ri is the project discount rate rf is the risk free interest rate (3i is the project beta, and 0 is the market risk premium (rm - rf)] Application of the CAPM is more difficult than Davis indicates. Valuation is prospective, while the CAPM parameters are historical. Beta is determined from a regression analysis of historical data, while the beta needed for valuation is the expected beta. Betas are known to be unstable and the regressions that generate them often have low explanatory power. The difficulty of estimating a "project" beta must also be considered. Thus, the beta that is used in the CAPM will be based on the analyst's judgment. Like Cavender's discount rate, this judgment can lead to different project NPVs. Subjectivity in valuation cannot be avoided by a mechanical application of the CAPM. The risk-free rate, which Davis identifies as a short-term real rate of 4%, is also subject to scrutiny. A mining project is not a short-term investment and no single risk-free rate is appropriate for all of the cash flows. The hypothetical mine discussed in Cavender's paper is a six-year project. One might argue for the application of a risk-free rate from the Treasury yield curve at the duration of the project (in a bond-duration sense). This, too, is inappropriate. The risk-free rate should be matched to the timing of the cash flow. These rates can be determined by calculating the implied forward rates from the yield curve using a procedure known as "bootstrapping." It is likely that each of the project's cash flows would be discounted at a different rate. Commodity prices Davis criticizes the "ad hoc adjustment to the discount rate." Yet, in his discussion of the value of stochastic simulation, he suggests that the gold price be modeled as a "random walk, with or without a trend." This is essentially an arbitrary modeling of price risk. Consider that a liquid market in gold futures exists. The futures' price curve, which is closely related to the market's estimate of future spot gold prices, should be used to provide inputs to the model. This is especially true of a relatively short six-year project. Alternatively, as Davis correctly points out, a risk-averse investor can sell the commodity short to hedge price risk. Is it any more correct, in the portfolio sense, to account for price risk at all ?? Davis Pindred discusses two issues related to my paper, the shortcomings of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and which commodity price values to use in the valuation exercise. Even though these topics are not directly related to the use or misuse of Monte Carlo simulation, they are important points to take into consideration in valuation exercises. Since I do not appear to have addressed these issues satisfactorily in my original paper, I will comment on each here. Pindred agrees with me that applying portfolio theory, and specifically the CAPM, to the selection of project discount rates is more defensible than ad hoc methods. But he then points out that the application of the CAPM to project valuation is more difficult that I indicate. It is true that the CAPM is a difficult tool for project valuation in general,. But the application of the CAPM to mining projects is one of the easiest I can think of. The biggest problem with using the CAPM for project valuation is coming up with an expected project beta. I suggest a project beta for gold projects of 0.45. The "true" value might be 0.35, 0.55 or whatever. Pindred correctly notes that the selection of the appropriate project beta is based

A longwall coal mine in southwestern Virginia mining the Pocahontas #3 Coal Seam experienced a history of mining-related seismic events. The events were never large enough to cause concern until three major events occurred recording 3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 ML in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively. Two of the seismic events generated an air blast which damaged stoppings which fueled a mine fire in 2005 and 2007. The mine responded to the events by narrowing the longwall widths, changing ventilation controls, installing a 7-sensor seismic system around the active panel, and creating a mining hazard map to avoid similar geology in the future. All of the actions taken have prevented seismic activity from impacting mining operations, but it did not prevent other large seismic events from occurring (Van Dyke et al., 2018). In 2016, another large seismic event, measured at 3.7 ML, occurred in the gob that was reported by the local media and recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While the event did not directly impact mining operations, mine management wanted to know where and under what conditions could large seismic events occur in the future. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) became involved to help understand what conditions precipitated these events so that future mine design could more accurately assess seismic hazards and reduce the risk to mine worker safety. Researchers at NIOSH and mine management created a seismic forecasting map that combined three factors: (1) overburden thickness, (2) sandstone thickness, and (3) the expected caving height of the gob. The criteria were developed based on the geologic data the mine collected from core drilling, e-log analysis, and fiberscope observations. The forecast map was able to provide an accuracy of 72%–85% of events 1.5 ML or greater and 100% accuracy of events that were 3.0 ML or greater based on historical data. The seismic forecasting map was applied to the entire future mining area to show areas where seismic potential could be the greatest based on current mine design planning, ultimately improving the ability of the mine operator to assess the seismic hazards surrounding active and future mining areas (Van Dyke et al. 2018). Following this research, the seismic forecasting map was implemented into the mine’s hazard recognition program and is continuously updated and evaluated prior to mining each longwall panel. This paper will cover in more detail how the seismic and lithologic data was processed and how the mine implemented a new seismic mitigation program based on the forecasting results.

Acoustic pollution (noise) is a significant mine environmental system problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Labor (DOL) and other researchers have all performed contributory research on noise in mining environments. The present study addressed the problem of unavailability of a computerized, practical, routine, user-friendly, and user-editable, prose-styled application program with which one can determine (a) the noise exposure indices among mine workers, (b) mine system noise exposure level on time-weighted average basis, and (c) predictive relationships among mine workers' age, prior exposure to abnormal noise levels, prior auditory pathologies and the risk/degree of mining-induced hearing impairment. Results showed that such a program ("NEIL") is accomplishable. Additional results revealed that most U.S. mines operate within the statutory noise exposure levels. Furthermore, the mine worker's age was statistically confirmed to be the main predictive risk factor for mining-induced occupational hearing impairment.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.

Straw charcoal was used as a novel reductant in the co-reduction roasting of laterite ore and red mud. The influence of the reductant dosages, co-reduction temperature, and co-reduction time were investigated. Results showed that a powdered ferronickel product of 1.81wt.% nickel and 81.40wt.% iron was obtained under straw charcoal dosage of 15wt.% and roasted at 1250 °C for 80 min. The corresponding recovery of nickel and total iron were 97.21wt.% and 98.87wt.%, respectively. The performance of straw charcoal was also compared to that by the conventional coke reductant. Results showed that ferronickel particles using straw charcoal were larger in size than coke, mainly due to the lower S (0.14wt.%) and ash content (3.80wt.%), which could not hinder the agglomeration of the ferronickel grains, and lower melting point that producing liquid phase and promoting ferronickel particles growth. In addition, the gasification reactivity of straw charcoal is better than that of coke, which is beneficial to the iron oxide reduction and the recovery of iron. To conclude, straw charcoal is a promising reductant for the co-reduction of laterite ore and red mud in coal-deficient areas.

A three-year project focusing on the depth profiling of respirable coal mine dust particles using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis resulted in the development of statistically classified particle-behavior models. The models depict the changing silicon fraction for 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-keV accelerating voltages, thereby giving a clear indication of the nature of various types of particles. "Refuge alternatives (RAs) are required in underground coal mines to support life post-disaster. RAs are mandated by MSHA to maintain an apparent temperature (AT) at or below 95°F (35°C) while providing a safe and livable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours. Because strata composition and mine temperatures will affect the final AT within an occupied RA, NIOSH researchers have collaborated with five underground coal mines across the US to characterize the effects of geographic location and seasonal temperature fluctuations on mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata temperatures. The data collected indicates that some mines will experience greater temperature fluctuations than others, based on geographic location. The mine which demonstrated the greatest temperature differential over the course of the year resulted in a mine air temperature that ranged from 53.4°F (11.9°C) to 84.2°F (29.0°C) and a rib surface temperature that ranged from 55.4°F (13.0°C) to 82.8°F (28.2°C). This data suggests that the location and seasonal peak temperature can significantly affect the mine strata temperature, which could lead to a fully occupied RA exceeding the 95°F (35°C) AT limit over the course of 96 hours. The data reported in this paper could be used to examine the heat buildup inside an RA for actual mine conditions. Thermal simulations could be implemented to evaluate maximum occupancy ratings based on actual mine temperatures and strata compositions. INTRODUCTION In the event of a mine disaster, miners’ primary focus is to escape. Should their attempt be futile, they can enter a refuge alternative (RA) to await rescue. In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated that underground coal mines implement RAs within 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of the working face and spaced within one-hour travel distances in outby areas where persons work such that persons in outby areas are never more than than a 30-minute travel distance from an RA or safe exit. These RAs are required to provide a safe and habitable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours and to prevent the apparent temperature (AT) from exceeding 95°F (35°C) [1]. There is concern throughout the industry that in some cases the internal ambient of occupied RAs may exceed the 95°F (35°C) AT limit due to the potentially hot mine atmosphere as well as the metabolic heat generated by RA occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) and its Experimental Mine (EM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. Further testing and analyses were completed to evaluate the mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation) by which heat is transferred from an RA to the mine surroundings. Additionally, the effects of varying mine strata compositions on the heat buildup inside an RA were studied [3]. The mine strata temperatures will increase due to heat transfer from within an RA. Depending on the mine strata composition, some mines may be more thermally conductive than others. For example, sandstone is much more conductive than shale or coal (i.e. it disippates heat at a quicker rate). All things being equal, the air temperature inside of an RA after 96 hours will be higher for a mine with strata that has low thermal conductivity compared to a mine with high thermal conductivity."

Resin-grouted bolts serve as a crucial means of stabilizing yielded coal ribs in underground coal mines. A comprehensive investigation into their efficacy was undertaken by a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). This study involved pull-out tests in multiple locations, including six coal mines and the NIOSH research mine. A total of seventy-three (73) tests were conducted, of wide range of anchorage lengths, ranging from a short encapsulation length of 0.305 m to a fully grouted encapsulation length of 1.524 m. The test findings indicate that when short encapsulation bolts are installed at high rotation speeds, their anchorage capacity is significantly reduced, leading to failure at the bolt-grout interface. Conversely, when these bolts are installed at lower rotation speeds, they exhibit greater capacity, with failure occurring at a higher anchorage load equivalent to the yield load of steel rebar. No matter what the rotational speeds were used during bolt installation in this study, the fully grouted bolts consistently experienced failure at the ultimate load of the steel rebar. Most of the tests carried out on partially grouted bolts with anchorage lengths of 0.610 - 0.914 m have shown behavior patterns like the fully grouted bolts, although exhibiting reduced stiffness. The outcomes of this research offer a profound insight into the ways in which resin-grouted bolts enhance the stability of coal mine ribs.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for the highly mechanized PT. Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The deep ore zone (DOZ) is a coppergold deposit that is being developed underneath the current intermediate ore zone (IOZ) mine. One of the company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady ore flow of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) by 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

Glenrock, WY is underlain by two abondoned coal mines. Subsidence events have been recorded over the years, with the frequency increasing in recent years. As part of Wyoming's Abondoned Wins Lands Program, investigations including mining history/methods/mappings, subsurface drilling and material site searches were performed. Portions of the mines less than eighty feet from the surface, were identified as probable for subsidence. Subsidence control by hydraulic backfill was selected. Design included search and injection boreholes, water supply from the mines and the slurry mixing, transport and injection system. Injection system performance and backfill success is king monitored during construction.

The hydrometallurgical residue generated during the hydrometallurgical processing of waste automotive catalysts is valuable as a secondary resource. In this study, a process of platinum recovery from the hydrometallurgical residue by high-temperature smelting process was proposed. Results of lab- and pilot-scale experiments show a high recovery of more than 98% of platinum and glass slag was successfully obtained by controlling the Fe3O4 addition, C/Fe3O4 mass ratio, CaO/SiO2 mass ratio, smelting temperature, and holding time at 15 wt%, 0.4, 0.6, 1500 °C, and 120 or 60 min, respectively. Results from the pilot-scale show that the platinum contents in the glass slag and alloys were less than 4 g/t and more than 0.6 wt%, respectively. Therefore, the process proposed in this study is a prospective and effective approach for reutilization of hydrometallurgical residue containing platinum.

PREFACE In German coal mines the application of tunnel boring machines has become a very effective and economic technique for major development works. After initial trials around 1970 the breakthrough was reached by driving 13 km of road ways on Rheinland and Friedrich Heinrich collieries, using a DEMAG tunnel boring machine of 6 m diameter. INTRODUCTION The coal mines of Rheinland and Friedrich Heinrich are to be found in the West of the Ruhr Area, the largest coal mining area in the Federal Republic of Germany (Table 1). They form part of the Ruhrkohle company. Rheinland coal mines produces 41000 to 43000 t of run-of-mine coal every day, of which 20500 t are usable coal. Friedrich Heinrich has a daily production of 17000 t of run-of-mine coal, 9000 t of which are usable. The coal is worked at depths of 600 to 1100 m in seams 0.6 to 3.0 m thick. The method of mining is longwall, and the machines used are ploughs and shearer loaders. From 1973 to 1980 a programme was put into operation in these two mines to develop and open up the coal field on the 885 m level. A total tunnel length of 20 km was to be driven. The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is investigating biological and chemical reduction of selenate and selenite from waste waters. A mixed bacterial culture, isolated from agricultural waters, removed selenium from four oxidized cyanide solutions from precious metals operations containing 0.6 to 30 ppm Se and 13 ppm CN. Up to 85% selenium removal was attained using bacteria under controlled batch conditions in a 3-L stirred tank reactor and in small-scale continuous tests conducted in a rotating biological contactor (RBC). Fe(OH), reduction of the selenium reduced the effluent concentration to 0.02 ppm Se; however, the reagent costs were prohibitive. A final processing scheme may involve a combination of biological and chemical treatments.

This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates, and the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when anionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were most strongly affected by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and were virtually independent of the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semi-taconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride.

Most governments recognize that energy efficiency represents a partial solution to reducing global capital shortages and environmental crises that threaten to seriously impede economic growth. Much of the United States and many foreign countries are embracing the concept of Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) which incorporates Supply Side Management (SSM) and Demand Side Management (DSM). Since SSM comes at twice to three times the cost of DSM, it makes economic sense to employ the energy conservation techniques of DSM. This paper will explain these concepts and some of the incentives being put forward by governments and utilities to promote DSM.

In the northwestern part of the Netherlands lies the deepest solution salt mine in the world. The company operating the mine is Frisia Zout bv (part of the K+S group). Extracting the NaCl from caverns at a depth of nearly 3000 m has a lot of challenges. Continuously monitoring, among others, the flows, pressures and salt concentrations is necessary to safely and economically mine the salt. A system has been set up at Frisia to be able to monitor the data from a distance. Data has been put in graphs to monitor the trends daily. All gauges are also continuously monitored to maintain accuracy. With this system a better understanding of the mining process has been made and has led to many optimizations.
