Cement is used as an established agglomerating agent in gold heap leaching operations to maintain heap permeability and prevent migration of fines. In addition to agglomeration, cement provides protective alkalinity control. However, the amount of cement needed for agglomeration is usually very different from the amount necessary for pH control. As a result, cement is usually added in excess. Overdose of cement can result in reduced gold recovery and/or lengthy detoxification. Betz Laboratories has identified polymeric agents that provide the benefits of cement without negatively impacting gold recovery when used alone or with lime. Independent laboratory tests also strongly suggest that the polymer/lime system can significantly reduce heap detoxification time.

Pulp lifters are used to discharge ground pulp from non-overflow grinding mills. In straight-radial channel pulp lifters, discharge is often incomplete and back-flow down the pulp lifter can occur. Leading-curve channel pulp lifters can be used to ensure complete discharge, especially at high mill rotational speeds. The complex motion of solid materials in pulp lifters has been modelled mathematically for both straight-radial and curved pulp lifters in order to make comparisons between the two types. The model is supported by practical observations of the performance of curved pulp-lifters in a commercial 24ftSAG Mill as well as observations of the discharge from several commercial straight-radial pulp-lifter AG/SAG Mills.

This paper describes the Boroo Gold Company (BGC) ore processing plant which is the first CIL/CIP plant in Mongolia. BGC is the first foreign investment in Mongolia since 1990 and follows the highest safety and environmental standards. Commissioning of the plant commenced in October 2003 and commercial production began in March 2004. Gold recovery is by gravity and conventional leaching and carbon adsorption. Detoxification of the leach tails is by the SO2/Air method before discharging the tails to the tailings pond. Ore types treated at Boroo are predominantly oxide with some transition ore as mining reaches the lower sulphide zone. There are several interesting technological issues and projects ongoing at Boroo which will also be discussed.

"Ten years ago," said a mining industry personnel manager, "we used to wine and dine new mining engineering graduates. Now I can pick and choose among men with 10 years of experience." Comments like that are common throughout the industry today. During the 1970s, the US and Canada did indeed suffer from a severe shortage of mining engineers, especially experienced ones. Moreover, it seemed likely this North American shortage would worsen. Increased production of minerals and coal was pushing demand for mining engineers upwards, and there appeared to be substantial new employment prospects for them in the nascent synfuels industry. The oil majors entering the mining industry were pushing for an increased professionalization of mining management, heralding a trend towards higher intensity in the use of mining engineers. In response to the shortage, mining schools expanded their programs dramatically. By 1982, American schools were churning out more than 600 new mining engineers per year, compared to barely 200 in 1970 (Table 1). The timing of the explosion in the number of mining engineers could not have been worse. The downturn in the economy and the resulting slump in the mining industry coincided almost exactly with peak output of mining engineers. The market for mining engineers shifted from shortage to surplus with startling rapidity. The new crop of engineers, no longer courted by the mining companies, struggled to find any mining jobs. At the same time, experienced mining engineers found themselves thrown into the job market, some for the first time in decades. The current oversupply of mining engineers is assumed to be a temporary phenomenon. As the economy recovers, the demand for mining engineers is expected to pick up at least enough to absorb today's surplus. Not so, according to a recent study by Fenvessy and Schwab, a general management consulting and executive recruiting firm. In 1979, Fenvessy and Schwab was commissioned by a group of major mining companies to conduct a worldwide study of supply and demand for mining engineers to the year 2000*. The study began at the height of the North American shortage. One major objective of the study was "to identify means by which business and educational institutions may cope with and alleviate a future shortage of mining engineering talent." The findings, however, ran directly counter to expectations. The current oversupply will not disappear with economic recovery, the study concluded. In fact, the US and Canada are facing a massive oversupply that will probably last until the end of the century, unless enrollments in schools are reduced. Study Method Fenvessy and Schwab's conclusions are based on supply and demand models for mining engineers that it developed in the course of the study. Specifically, predictions for the supply of mining engineers are based on a survey of the 54 mining schools that account for about 90% of the world's annual output of mining engineering graduates. This survey asked for data on historical and projected number of graduates, obstacles to further expansion, changing trends in the use of mining engineers, and graduate career patterns. Fenvessy and Schwab developed three mining engineering supply scenarios from the survey data. The high case, considered unlikely for most of the industrialized world, is based on a continuation of the 1970's soaring growth rates. The middle case was established from the mining schools' own estimates of future growth in the number of graduating mining engineers. Finally, a "low growth" case for the US and Canada assumed that the number of graduating engineers will remain at current levels. "When MacLean Engineering chairman and founder Don MacLean got the first question from a minesite about the possibility of addressing ventilation limits through incremental fleet electrification, he was intrigued. It was back in 2015, and the MacLean scissor bolter was already diesel-electric (jumbo trailing cable), so it made sense to him that if they could engineer a battery drive system for the unit’s tramming cycle, they would have the inaugural electric vehicle (EV) MacLean unit.At that time, there were not any entirely diesel-free hard rock mines in existence on the planet, and that remains the case to this day — although the Borden project in northern Ontario is progressing toward that goal (see page 33). This meant there was essentially zero market demand for battery electric vehicles as well as a complete lack of battery technology to address the battery electrification of heavy haulage. Heavy haulage is the part of a typical mine’s mobile fleet with the largest footprint when it comes to diesel particulate emissions, greenhouse gases and wasted energy in the form of heat.Three years later — the wave of battery electrification that is currently picking up speed across the mining industry promises to hit full swing by the early 2020s when a slew of new build, diesel-free mines will start construction. But this movement toward emissions-free mobile fleets is not a completely new phenomenon. Instead, it is an updating of mining technology from a previous generation. What is going on now is the re-electrification of mining. Up until the 1960s, early generations of battery technology (lead acid) and electric locomotive systems were the norm for material and ore haulage in Canada and elsewhere.The thought of a coming paradigm change in mining was particularly pertinent to Don MacLean back in 2015, as he had been part of the era that ushered in the first generation of rubber-tire diesel equipment, when he was a divisional foreman with Inco in Sudbury in the 1970s. He was part of the operating team that was tasked to build a rail loop on one extraction level of the mine. At that time, events on the ground overtook the project, as diesel-powered mobile equipment became a viable option. Once the first diesel scoop was introduced at Creighton #3 shaft, it was clear what the power, haulage capacity and mobility could do for operations and that era of electric rail haulage underground was effectively over."

INTRODUCTION On February 17, 1995, WMATA Contractor J.F. Shea holed through the last segment of rock tunnels of the planned 103-Mile Rapid Transit System for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Through the joined efforts and cooperation between the owner and the contractor, the project was completed on time and within budget. The Glenmont extension is on schedule to open in Mid-1998. The complete 103-mile system is scheduled to open in 2001. WMATA’s earlier 19 miles of rock tunnels had been done since 1976 ? By drill and blast with heavy horseshoe steel sets, sets with shotcreting over wire-fabric by TBM and NATM. All rock tunnels were primarily in metamorphic gneiss and schist, part of an east coast lithology that outcrops in a band running from below Richmond, Va. To above New York City. The 5,400 ft. long twin six meter tunnels of the Glenmont line had been earlier de-signed in 1979 by URS of NYC using Jenny Engineering of Pittsburgh, Pa., as a tunnel design specialist sub consultant. Jenny had provided two alternative designs, one conventional drill and blast horseshoe and one for Tunnel Boring Machine. Funding considerations had put the design on the shelf and it was clear that the state of the art had led to improved design methods in the intervening years. Before URS was tasked to update their design in1992, the Authority reviewed its earlier hard-rock experiences in light of the funding mandate to complete each segment on a limited budget and an expedited schedule. Many factors considered and many opinions were in leading to a final decision to drop the earlier designs and redesign for a single designated means of tunneling. That method was the New Austrian Tunneling Method. The NATM had been used earlier on WMATA for both soft-ground and rock tunnels. In the public’s eyes the NATM had become inextricably linked with the use of PVC’s and filter material enveloping or partially enveloping the underground structures to give the holy grail of tunnels, a water-tight structure. Although this link of waterproofing methods with excavation and support methods was essentially severed, a general feeling of their interdependence no doubt helped lead to acceptance of the NATM decision because of the waterproofing design that accompanied it. The Authority decided to drop the TBM and conventional options and provide bid documents for NATM only. URS asked LAW Engineering of Atlanta to provide the NATM design of the tunnels and associated shafts.

In-pit identification of neutral waste rock at the Zortman and Landusky minesites in Montana, by visual and chemical analy­ses, will assist in proper segregation and placement of rock so that soil and water resources can be protected. The use of too few or very general segregation criteria to identify neutral waste rock can result in ineffective waste rock segregation. Conversely, the use of overly restrictive criteria can result in the unnecessary loss of valuable reclamation material that would otherwise have to be mined elsewhere and hauled to the site. Recognition of nonre­active materials can be accomplished on a site specific basis with the use of visual observation and simple chemical analyses. The choice of chemical parameters used to analyze rock samples is constrained by the length of time needed to conduct the test. These analyses must require no more than 24 hours to complete so mining can proceed without delay. Limits set for the chosen parameters must be reasonable and defensible. To achieve these objectives over one thousand samples were collected at the Zortman and Landusky minesites and clas­sified by rock type, total sulfur content, paste pH, and net neu­tralizing potential (NNP). In addition, over 22 humidity cell kinetic tests were conducted to help corroborate static results for waste rock. Another 8 humidity cells were configured in series to test waste rock blending and waste rock/limestone capping alternatives as mitigation for acid rock drainage. Leachates were analyzed for pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, sulfate, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mg, and Cr in some cases. Petrographic analysis, as well as total sulfur content, paste pH, and static and kinetic test results identified three geochem­ically different waste rock groups: 1) Archean amphibolite gneiss and Paleozoic carbonates and shales, 2) Tertiary syenite porphyry, and 3) other less abundant Tertiary igneous and Archean metamorphic rocks.

As indicated on the official conference program, this presentation in not a formal one, but a synopsis of the activities of a newly created Sub-committee of the Research Council on Underground Construction, which involves itself with small diameter tunnels. Because there is a dire need to develop a system of excavating small horizontal openings at shallow depths without interrupting traffic, it was hoped that a more progress report could be reported at this time. Because of ecological and environmental considerations, laws are being passed which mandate that all utilities be placed underground. In urban areas the excavation of trenches in which these utilities are placed has been done by disrupting the normal flow of traffic, thereby creating complete chaos. In addition, it always seems that the Companies involved have no coordination, since one company completes its installation and another one begins. Certainly, utility tunnels can be driven at greater depths to house main feeder and trunk lines, but there still remains the problem of installing distribution lines for house services. The definition of a "mini" tunnel, is a tunnel whose excavated size is approximately 48 in. or less. The objectives of the Committee are to "stimulate the development of systems and equipment to build tunnels in these size ranges which will reduce costs, time and surface disruption from current systems."

There are many carbon-in-pulp and resin-in-pulp screening devices which are at present in use in the South African mining industry. Each one of these screens has been an improvement, from the very basic air cleaned and 'EPAC' types which were either circumferential or · diametrical launder screens, which were developed for C I P in the early 1980's, through to the more sophisticated LAP and Kambalda Screens. Each one of these screens not only increased the performance or throughput per square metre than its predecessor, but also addressed maintenance problems, wear, reliability and the ability to handle surge conditions, thereby preventing tank overflow. However, very little theory has been presented concerning, the flow of pulp through internal screens, carbon loss and screen wear rates. Almost all this information is based on empirical data. The NKM screen continued this trend and was able to offer flow rates in excess of 180 cubic metres per square metre of screen per hour and an average screen life of approximately six months. However, with increasing sophistication of the screen and the use of wedge wire as opposed to the normal woven wire, the mass was significantly increased and costs began to mount. Therefore, Mixtec undertook to develop a radically different screen, which incorporated many of the advantages of .the existing equipment and combined a few of its own.

Over the past couple of decades several endeavours have been made to develop lixiviants with the intention of replacing cyanide in gold leaching. In 1980s these endeavours were largely economically driven, due to cyanide shortages at that time. In more recent times, the driving force has shifted to occupational health and environmental considerations. It is often argued that the high acute toxicity of cyanide alone makes it worthwhile considering to replace it completely by less toxic alternative lixiviants. This has led to having to consider more criteria in the choice of any alternative lixiviants, which have often not been taken into account in the past. The intention of this paper is to review these alternative lixiviants and also review the criteria, which have ultimately led to most of these lixiviants never having found any large scale application, if they passed laboratory stage at all. It is also intended to show, that by handling and treating cyanide in a proper manner, the overall profile for the use of cyanide compared to these alternative lixiviants is very favourable. The question to really be answered is whether there is actually any chemical or process applicable to gold leaching that does not show the high toxicity potential of cyanide and that is still favourable with regard to looking at a broader spectrum of criteria and not only acute toxicity.

Nickel is present in a number of gold ores in Australia, Africa and the United States. The effects and behaviour of the nickel during the cyanidation and adsorption processes, and also during the elution and electrowinning processes have been examined by a number of researchers, usually as a part of a larger investigation. This paper examines the available data on the behaviour and effect of nickel during cyanidation and its associated unit processes. The presence of nickel is often not considered to be particu­larly important as it does not cause the same degree of problems across the circuit as those experienced in the presence of copper. It can however lead to increased cyanide consumption during leaching, and reduced adsorption of gold onto carbon. A proportion of nickel cyanide may be removed from carbon prior to elution by carrying out a hot (90° C) acid wash. The nickel which remains on the carbon will be partially eluted during the main elution step, and, dependent on its concentration in the pregnant solution, part of it may be deposited during electrowinning. There is always a risk that any nickel remaining on the carbon after the elution step will be reduced to metallic nickel during the regeneration step. This may ultimately result in an increasing base level of nickel on the carbon, as metallic nickel is insoluble in both cyanide and hydrochloric acid.

With no doubt, Peruvian mining potential is great as well as the energetic one. Unfortunately, this potential is threatened by social unrest. Several methods and strategies from different standpoints have been rehearsed with respect to unrest in Peru, however, the problem goes on without getting the right conflict interpretation and most of all, effective solutions are not achieved. The mining unrest dates from ancient times and has not always had the same stages nor the same demands. In the 20´s and 30´s, conflicts focused on workers’ rights and demands. In the 70´s, conflict focused on mines nationalization that were under foreign control. In the 80´s, conflicts took place because of requesting better wages, better working conditions, better mining profits distribution and more investment in communities that surround mining projects. It is very important to highlight those transversal demands such as land purchase, agricultural property, impacts and water reduction as well as pollution, impact on water systems and disappearance of springs have always been present over the historical period.

Extensive personal experience in the USA and Australia has shown that Australians working in suitable work environments are capable of world class performance. To build such work environments, mining leaders need to ditch two common management approaches that have not succeeded. Firstly, stop relying on traditional methods of trying to change people's behaviour simply by using communication alone to change attitudes and then change behaviour. Analysis of human behaviour explains why this approach fails in all industries. Secondly, stop trying to improve productivity by just running harder and increasing capital investment. Understanding work processes explains why this approach has limited success. These two approaches underlie problems commonly mentioned by many Australian mining executives: • negative or inadequate attitudes prevailing among Australian miners and managers including the lack of ownership of business goals among people at many levels • inadequate development of managers and accountability • lack of a competitive advantage in an industry in which labour costs are around 50% of mine site cash costs at many mines, and, • logical, emotional and physical barriers to change.

The objective of this paper is to present preliminary capital and operating cost estimates (±25%) comparing conventional carbon-in-solution (CIS) with resin-in­solution (RIS) using AuRIX® 100 for the recovery of gold and silver from typical heap leach solutions. Preliminary testwork was carried out with AuRIX® 100 using real and synthetic leach solutions to determine the technical viability of the resin for gold/silver recovery and to provide process design parameters for the preliminary RIS circuit. The scope of the resin testwork was sufficient to support the level of accuracy applied in the capital and operating cost estimates. No parallel testwork was carried out with activated carbon. Industry standard design data and operating data from existing CIS operations were used as a basis for the comparison. Both the capital and operating cost comparisons indicate a substantial savings for a RIS circuit using AuRIX® 100 (- 14 to 18% in terms of capital and 25 to 35% in terms of operating costs) over a conventional CIS circuit depending upon solution flows and grade.

The removal of oxyanions of arsenic present in mine process water and drinking water to a regulatory level (i.e. below 50 ppb) is a challenging problem. Conventional water treatment methods presently used for controlling arsenic have several drawbacks and limited success. A new adsorbent (LS™) developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, has strong specificity for both arsenate and arsenite species present in process waters. The adsorbent in very selective to oxyanions of arsenic and competition of other indifferent ions is minimum. Water samples from different sources were tested and arsenic was successfully removed to below 50 ppb. This paper describes both batch and packed column tests conducted in the laboratory as well as at the plant sites using LS™.

Commissioning of a 150 tpd continuous vat leaching pilot plant at Ariel Resource's San Martin Mine began in October, 1995. Functioning of the systems proved to be as designed. Initial tri­als, however, were besieged with problems associated with clay fractions that were much higher than in the ore originally tested. Nevertheless, leach rates were good in the initial and subsequent trials. Difficulties with the viscous solutions generated by the clay fraction continued, requiring modifications to the solution collection methods and investigation of flocculant types and mixing points. Trials with deslimed ore and sand feed demon­strated continuous flow. Current modifications will be tried in late May, 1996, along with selected flocculants, with the objec­tive of leaching continuously without the need to deslime.

In support of the Conceptual Design of a Nuclear Waste Repository in Salt, a confined core pillar design method developed by others was reviewed. The method, which was developed for applications in coal, represents the confined strength of the pillar material in terms of a linear failure criterion. However, triaxial compression strength tests conducted on salt samples indicate that a non-linear strength criterion is more appropriate for salt. The rationale behind the confined core method is reviewed. A rederivation of the confined core method is then presented that incorporates a non-linear strength criterion. Benefits of the modified method are that the strength of the confined pillar core can be more accurately represented, and that two contributors of pillar strength, rather than one, can be addressed.

"Despite the difficult economic climate for the mining industry, more than 6,300 people joined SME for its 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 21-24.Nearly every commodity has been bruised and battered during the past year, leading to one of the more difficult cycles for the industry in the past decade. Coal has taken some of the hardest hits and other commodities, such as copper and iron ore, have felt the sting of a slower growth in China and an oversupply on the market.The difficult conditions could not be ignored, but they did not deter SME from offering a forum for the industry to share knowledge, network with peers and learn about the best products and practices while visiting the sold-out exhibit hall (844 booths and 627 vendors) or while attending any of the 121 technical sessions that were offered.The current state of the industry was one of the overriding themes of the conference and during the challenging times there are often cutbacks as operations look to become leaner and more efficient, however, there is one area that cannot be cut – health and safety.The conference kicked off with a fascinating presentation from Colonel Mike Mullane, a former NASA astronaut who, in 1978, was selected as a Mission Specialist Astronaut in the first group of space shuttle astronauts. He completed three space missions and logged 356 hours in space aboard the shuttles Discovery and Atlantis before retiring from NASA and the U.S. Air Force in 1990.In his speech to a packed audience, he warned of the dangers of cutting corners to get the job done more quickly by guarding against the “normalization of deviance.”Normalization of deviance is a long-term phenomenon in which individuals or teams repeatedly accept a lower standard of performance until that lower standard becomes the norm. Usually, the acceptance of the lower standard occurs because the individual or team is under pressure (budget, schedule, etc.) and perceives it will be too difficult to adhere to the original higher standard. Their intention may be to revert back to the higher standard when this period of pressure passes. However, by getting away with the deviation from the higher standard, it is likely they will do the same thing when the same stressful circumstances arise again. Over time, the individual/team fails to see their actions as deviant."
