Implementation of post-closure draindown estimates for tailings facilities are important predictive tools for reclamation planning and often influence jurisdictional bonding. Simplified estimates of draindown have been proposed in the past but these methods are not able to capture many of the site-specific nuances as well as operational and material parameters that influence robust draindown estimates. This paper discusses an iterative approach that relies on unsaturated flow models to predict draindown rates and associated pond inventory water balances that track inputs into underdrain pond systems, solution storage volumes, implementation of active evaporation, and necessary recirculation of solution back to the tailings facilities. Specific design criteria such as climate, facility geometry, material properties, and initial conditions, as well as active closure operational considerations that can influence draindown estimate will be discussed. Concepts presented will be valuable for operators, designers, and regulators to guide closure planning and predictive analytical analyses that support draindown estimates.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and ground falls, pose critical risks to underground mine safety and productivity. Today, monitoring of such failures is primarily conducted using legacy techniques with low spatial and temporal resolution while exposing workers to hazardous environments. This study assesses the potential of novel simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)-based light detection and ranging (lidar) data quality for rapid, digital and, eventually, autonomous minewide underground geotechnical monitoring. We derive a comprehensive suite of quality metrics based on tests in two underground mines for two state-of-the-art mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems. Our results provide evidence that SLAM-based MLS systems provide data of the quality required to detect geotechnically relevant changes while being significantly more efficient for large mine layouts when compared to traditional static systems. Additionally, we show that SLAM-specific processing can achieve an order of magnitude better relative accuracy relevant for change detection than quality metrics derived from traditionally deployed tests would suggest, while reducing SLAM-drift error by up to 90 percent. In collaboration with an operating block-caving mine, we confirm these capabilities in field tests on a minewide scale and, for the first time, demonstrate methods of rockfall detection using MLS data. While more work is required to investigate optimal collection, processing and utilization of MLS data, we demonstrate its potential to become an effective and widely applicable data source for rapid, accurate and comprehensive geotechnical inspections.

The life cycle assessment and the performance of pine fence posts treated with water borne preservatives and oils after 18 years exposure in ground contact were examined in this study. Vacuum CCB treated fence posts were subsequently treated at their lowest part (ground contact) with creosote using the open hot and cold tank process and exposed under warm dry temperate climatic conditions in Greece. After 18 years exposure, samples were taken from the above ground contact, top, middle and ground contact and tested for toughness using a Denison single blow impact bending test machine. There was no significant reduction of toughness in any of these zones. Chemical analysis of the residual CCB of unexposed and exposed samples by ICP showed that copper and chromium losses were insignificant while boron losses were significant (more than 50% of the initial content). This was attributed to an effect of creosote treatment.

"It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines (GMSG) guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and consequently require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result, these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive, depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions.As a result of these factors, full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of processing facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices.To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result, it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. These methods can also be manipulated by an experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, allowing an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

Metallic raw material flows are characterized by a complex global network of producers and consumers, as well as by a multitude of ecological, economic and social impacts across national boundaries and on different scales. This leads to the need to develop methodologies, which allow identifying obstacles that prevent metallic raw material flows to contribute to sustainable development. From a scientific point of view CRC 525 (Martens 2003) has developed an holistic indicator set consisting of approximately 80 different indicators. This set is taking into account the multi-dimensional character of sustainable development. Moreover the indicators reflect different system boundaries according to different actor levels and decision contexts. The full indicator set is important in scientific considerations and suitable for scientific awareness creation. However, to fulfil the function of a decision support approach for political and economic decision-makers some modifications are of central concern. At first a reduction of the full indicator set by selection of core indicators enables decision-makers to deal with complex issues of contrary economic and societal protection targets. Secondly, as thresholds of indicators justify societal call for action, they are discussed against its political or scientific origin. The proposed methodology is exemplified by indicator-based studies of the material flow of aluminium.

Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.

There are differences in design aspects between steel and rubber linings in grinding mills. This paper describes the basic design rules for rubber liners for different grinding applications. When converting a mill from steel to rubber liners, the design must be changed from such familiar steel liner shapes as wedge bars and plates, wave liners, ship-lap, etc. to take advantage of the characteristics of rubber. Very little of the knowledge of the wear properties of steel can be used for the design of rubber mill liners.

Several major impediments threaten the successful delivery of tunnel and under-ground construction projects. In addition to technical design and construction risks associated with tunnel projects, many of which are well understood, budgetary pressures, funding constraints and the complexity of procuring, administering and executing multiple concur-rent projects in a large program could also have a catastrophic impact on the program?s objectives. Contributing factors often include poorly managed design, procurement, construction, managerial, organizational, market and stake-holder risks, as well as nonconforming inputs or outputs to the costs and schedule, or any other potential inabilities to deliver the required or desired results. A strategy to prevent ?failure? of a project requires a proactive and holistic approach to risk management. Through planning, identification, analysis, management, monitoring and control of the project?s risks (both threats and opportunities), attention to management of risk will in-crease the probability and impact of positive events and decrease the probability and impact of events adverse to a project?s objectives.

The concept of sub-aerial tailings deposit.ion using a managed rotational deposition system to form a deposit of partly-saturated tails for North American conditions was introduced by Knight and described by Knight and Haile (1983). The application of the sub-aerial technique, together with continuous removal of all surface waters and underdrainage outflows from the Key Lake uranium mine I s tailing storage facility in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada, has been documented by Knight and Haile (1984). Since then, the concept is being applied in the United States to tailings facilities in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and South Dakota.

The SIMAN (SIMulation ANalysis) computer language is a general-purpose, discrete-continuous simulation language for modeling a variety of multi-component systems. The language has been described by its author in a textbook (Pegden, 1985) and in a paper (Pegden, 1986) and is available in a mainframe version, a minicomputer version and a microcomputer version. The language was designed for and has been extensively used for modeling manufacturing systems but possesses many features that are advantageous in the modeling of mining materials handling systems. Consequently, the authors have applied the language to the simulation of an open pit shovel/truck operation to test its usefulness for simulating mine materials handling systems. This paper presents a short background on simulation languages, the capabilities and modeling framework of the SIMAN language, a description of the application of SIMAN to a shovel-track operation and some results and conclusions on the use of the language for mining materials handling systems.

The Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has a long and proud history of being the world?s leading resource for the dissemination for technical information regarding the fields of mining and mineral extraction and processing. That reputation was met, and maybe even exceeded, with the programming for the Society?s 2014 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The meeting drew more than 6,700 attendees to the three-day conference that featured more than 90 technical sessions with 670 presentations. These sessions covered the breadth of the mining and minerals industry, but it was the so-called ?softer issues? that were discussed in the keynote session that kicked off the meeting. The keynote session, ?Community Engagement: Building Partnerships for Mining,? brought together some of the leading voices from the mining industry, as well as some of the top voices from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work in the mining sector. The common ground between the panelists was their dedication to working to ensure a social, economic and environmental balance in the development of mines. ?We wanted to bring these NGOs in to begin a dialogue to see how we can work together,? said SME President Jessica Kogel. ?This is a space that SME has not typically operated in, but one in which SME can bring a technical, scientific voice to the discussion. SME wants to play a leadership role in creating partnerships between the technical, social and economic areas that are crucial to the success of any mining project.? In today?s environment, finding mineral deposits and extracting the minerals in an economically viable manner is just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle. Earning and maintaining a social license to operate requires careful consideration of local and global impacts. The industry often comes under intense scrutiny when a new project is proposed and, therefore, it must strive to meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. Success requires cooperation and collaboration between the industry, community and NGOs.

Mine and tunnel contractors face a complex environment-one in which economic risks are high, operating costs grow ever higher, ore grades are lower or recovery more difficult, and civil construction projects are intensely competitive on a world-wide scale. Within the context of this environment, the risks and rewards of proper machine selection for rock excavation have become proportionately large. Speed, depth and scope of analysis, and extensive supporting information are indispensable in the selection process. Equipment designs and their applications are also myriad and diverse. Several equipment alternatives and excavation techniques may have to be evaluated at once to choose the most cost-efficient approach. The following examples are typical of the current demand for more detailed equipment analysis: • An aggregate supplier starts a new quarry. He knows his targeted tonnage, blasting restrictions, and previous operating costs from other quarries. But he must improve on his old costs. What drill pattern, hole size, and bench height will give lowest cost per ton? How many crawler drills and what type will produce this tonnage most efficiently? • A mine is using a fleet of twin pneumatic ring drills for long hole drilling to initiate their cave. The mine is facing both air shortages and increasing operating costs with decreased efficiency in the ring drill fleet. If they invest in new hydraulic long hole drills, what impact will each drill unit have on production? Each twin drill unit? What configuration gives best operator efficiency and subsequent reduction in manpower? Which configuration gives the best return on investment? • A tunnel contractor is bidding a long straight water tunnel by conventional drill and blast methods. What is the optimum number of drill booms for the tunnel cross section and excavation schedule? How many rounds per day can he achieve? What are his total project drill, blast, and muck costs? In the past, such questions could be answered, but only approximately at best. One good prediction could involve many hours of laborious calculations that had to be repeated each time a new parameter was introduced or an existing parameter changed. In 1980, increasingly complex analysis, coupled with increasing need and quick response times demanded by industry, led Atlas Copco's project department to turn to the computer. New computer programs based on theoretical considerations and three decades of worksite performance data were developed for evaluating mine and tunnel contractors' equipment needs, productivity, and partial or total operating cost calculations for most conventional drill and blast excavation techniques-including shot rock loading and transportation. This Computerized Analysis of Rock Excavation-or CARE-program has since been available to the mining and construction industry. From each program specific results can be pre- dicted, including: • Productivity Calculations-Rock drill penetration rate for a given drill, hole size, and rock type, optimized for the best drill steel life; net machine productivity (drill-out time or drill meters-footage-per shift); total drill round time, including charging, blasting, loading, and haulage; suggested drill pattern, computer printed, including hole size for a given rock drill, rock type, and associated blasting restrictions for either drift rounds or benching applications; long-hole drill meters (ft) per drill shift; breasting down (upper drilling) drill meters (ft) per drill shift; and comparison between continuous loading machine capacity and LHD capacity. • Operating Cost Calculations-Operating costs expressed as cost per drill meter (ft), cost per cubic meter (cubic yard) of excavated rock, and cost per meter (ft) of tunnel advance. These costs may be calculated using as many cost centers as the mine, quarry, or tunneling contractor wishes. Specific operating costs may cover drill rig operating costs only, less capitalization; drill rig operating costs, including amortized equipment investment; drilling and blasting costs; drill, blast, load, and haulage operating costs; long-hole drilling operating costs per drill meter (ft) or per blasted cubic meter (cubic yard) of rock; and loading and transport operating costs. In all the above cases, any number of cost and capacity calculations may be run by simply changing important cost center variables to judge their net effect. Accuracy as a Function of Input Data and the Statistical Data Base Accuracy of a projection clearly depends heavily on the data base from which the projection is drawn.

When Homestake Mining Company's Mclaughlin Gold Project was being evaluated for development, it was apparent that recovery of gold from mined ore would be difficult and relatively expensive. The ore was refractory, averaging less than 50% recovery in conventional direct cyanidation milling tests. Extensive testing narrowed the processing choices to either autoclave or roaster oxidation before cyanidation. Roasting was ruled out due to higher capital and operating costs --the Mclaughlin mill would be the first large-scale application of autoclave oxidation of a refractory gold ore.

This paper reviews the technical advice available to support companies in the delivery of social aspects of sustainable development. It will draw on diverse experience from the sparsely populated plains of the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the densely populated villages of the Carpathian Mountains in Slovakia. It will review basic requirements for the consideration of social issues, as well as guidance on international best practice. It will review: the legal basis; coverage; consideration of alternatives; scope; inclusive decision-making; indicator development; impact monitoring and evaluation. The paper will discuss the breadth and depth of social issues for consideration, including the realms of responsibility of a company in terms of social development in different operating environments. The extractive industries invest substantial amounts of money which typically dwarfs local development, health or education budgets. Capacity building for local authorities is not directly the role of the company, but when understood as a strategy for risk management, it can play a vital part of sustainable development that benefits the local community and reduces the risk of social problems impacting profits. The paper will argue that social impact assessment is most effective when the outcomes are in line with a company?s principles and support core business practices. It is important that social impact assessment is viewed as an integral part of project decision-making and moves away from mistrusted PR and unsustainable philanthropy toward partnership, which finds suitable and appropriate solutions delivering ?win-win? outcomes. While development should not be seen as a direct company objective, engaging with development actors to better understand the operating context can ensure that social investment complements existing initiatives. The paper will also present different mechanisms for engaging with local actors, as well as developing successful social programmes.

This paper addresses the use of the microcomputer programs BACKONE and BACKWEDG for an estimation of rock mass strength characteristics by back analysis of plane and wedge failures. The artificial support requirements are also determined by the programs PLANE2, BOLTPAT, and BOLTWEDG in terms of rock anchor installation angles, tensions, and installation patterns. These programs have been combined into a package called BACKPACK, which can be applied in open pit mines where some failures have already occurred.

INTRODUCTION The term "Rapid Underground Excavation" is generally associated with high speed tunnel advance with large volumes of excavation, and indeed this is the type of work for which most of the recent innovations in methods and new machinery have been developed. However, the term applies as well to any underground excavation process that results in an earlier project completion than would be expected with conventional methods, and hopefully with a decrease in total unit excavation cost. Often significant progress has been made during the primary stages of an underground construction project and then an inordinate amount of time and effort has been expended on small units of "miscellaneous" excavation which has delayed the overall project completion and escallated overall unit costs. Construction at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission for underground testing frequently requires significant amounts of so called "miscellaneous mining" such as short access drifts, cross cuts, alcoves, niches and concrete keyways. Many of the keyways must be excavated without disturbing the rock beyond the excavation lines and construction scheduling often dictates that much of the work must be accomplished without disturbing sensitive electronic equipment already installed. The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. In today’s challenging mining environment, everyone is focused on minimizing cost per ton. With haulage costs approaching up to 45% of the overall mining costs, and loader performance driving production, optimizing payload on the truck is a big opportunity. This paper will focus on technology’s role in loaders achieving the truck target payload. There are constantly new innovations in technology, but not everyone uses them correctly. Technology is intended to help achieve the next level of performance, but still requires the right people and processes to effectively utilize the benefits. In today’s mining business, miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in past decades. Technology can make these roles more efficient, but fully relying on the technology can detract from optimization. Sometimes the old-fashioned method of loading to a consistent pass match will provide a lower cost per ton. Before blindly trusting your technology feedback, know these three areas discussed in this paper: (1) Prerequisites to utilize technology in payload management; (2) Types of payload management technology; (3) How to use the data to manage operator behavior. The objective of this paper is to provide low-cost recommendations to efficiently increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all, or they are the data-driven new generation on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible.
