The design and efficient operation of density-based mineral processing units requires regular densimetric analysis to be carried out on the various associated process streams. The results obtained from such analyses can have wide application, including the generation of washability and partition curves, which are critical for process design, control, and simulation. This paper describes some of the collaborative efforts that Kumba Iron Ore, in partnership with Springer New Technology and Anglo Technical Solutions Research, is pursuing in developing a novel density determination technique exploiting X-ray transmission (XRT) and optical imaging. This technique is being developed with the aim to determine sample density distributions that apply to washability characterisation of ores. This technique is aimed to be an alternative to the traditional sink and float method. For certain applications sink and float has required the use of tetrabromoethane (TBE) solution?a chemical that has been classified as harmful and environmentally unfriendly. This paper therefore presents some achievements in developing this novel technique which seems to be very promising.

Unexpected equipment failures lead to financial losses due to production disruption. Time-based maintenance, based on checks over regular time periods, has been employed to minimise disruption. However, the improvements it can offer are limited as it may lead to unnecessary service of healthy equipment or missed failures occurring between service intervals. Condition-based maintenance (CBM) provides a further improvement to equipment reliability by detecting faults and predicting remaining useful life (RUL) based on equipment health monitoring. Its application in the mineral processing industry is hindered due to the high cost of health monitoring equipment. In this study, two stochastic process models, the adaptive auto-regressive model and the gamma process, are compared in their ability to forecast the degradation state and to provide RUL prediction. The gamma process model was found to be effective in both tasks. Due to its simplicity and minimum hyperparameters requirements, it is proposed to use the gamma process as a baseline for comparison with other models. Most diamonds are liberated from their ores by crushing. Diamond and other coarse grained mineral ores require carefully optimised crushing circuits. Recent advances in computer technology have made possible the on-line capture of crushing plant performance data and, hence, the accurate empirical modelling of the crushing process. Such models are used in simulation studies to determine the optimum operating conditions for a given plant. A system is described which allows operating data from mineral treatment processes to be logged. Up to 16 channels of data may be recorded simultaneously at sampling rates in the kiloHertz range per channel. A data storage and analysis procedure is described which allows the system to make full use of its sampling capabilities.

The philosophy behind the design of a rougher cell for the handling of coarse feed and for the maximization of recovery within a given time is presented. The application of this philosophy in cells of 22-litre, 320-litre, and 3 m3 capacity is outlined, and the results of the process testing of these cells are given. In this testing, particular accent was placed on the recovery of water as a guide to the recovery of the finest size of particles, and the rate of recovery of various mineral species. It is concluded that a promising concept has been identified, but that further testing is needed for the firmer establishment of optimal operational parameters in a production environment.

The development of a pilot gold geostatistical ore reserve system proved that geostatistical methods worked well for the routine production of annual ore reserves on gold mines of the Gold Fields of South Africa (GFSA) group, and that the techniques could also be practically implemented, understood and accepted by Survey Department personnel. Many side benefits of the pilot system became apparent, and a variety of useful management information was provided by manipulating the data values that were already captured. It was decided that it was a priority computing project to develop a standard production system (GORS) for routine use by all the GFSA gold mines. Experience with the pilot system enabled detailed functional specifications for GORS to be laid down. These, together with group computing policy determined the terms of reference and constraints for the GORS development. System design could not be finalized until new and appropriate mainframe database software and graphics workstation equipment and software had been found. With these in place the basic system was structured to take best ad- vantage of the interactive features of the workstation, the number-crunching power of the mainframe and the flexibility offered by a relational database and associated 4GL tools. Application sub-systems were developed for data capture, statistical applications, geostatistical calculations, contour plotting and graphical queries. GORS is being introduced to the mines in a phased manner with suitable documentation, training and support structures to enable it to be routinely and effectively used on a day-to-day basis by all group gold mines.

The susceptibility of a low-alloy steel that has been hardened and tempered-826 M40 (EN26)-to embrittlement by strain aging during service was simulated by artificial aging of specimens at 100°C. It was found that the brittle transition temperature of both monotonic and cyclically strained material was increased by only about 25°C as a result of strain aging. It is concluded that the susceptibility of low-alloy steels in the hardened, tempered condition is less than that of low-carbon steel, and that such steels qualify for exemption of the periodic 'annealing' required by the Mines and Works Act.

Magnetic separation has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of industrial minerals. Advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators over the years has broadened their use, and questions are often raised about which separation technique or equipment type is most appropriate for a particular operation. This paper will provide a brief look at existing magnetic separation technologies, and discuss their potential advantages and disadvantages when applied to heavy mineral applications. Relevant case studies for the separation of ilmenite and chromite are then presented. The process development efforts undertaken for each case are described, and the rationale for selecting appropriate magnetic separation technology is explained. The nature of the material being treated must clearly be understood, knowledge and access to testing the best separation technologies is required, and careful process development and economic evaluations are a must. As is shown in the case study discussions, it is imperative that these principles drive the separation technology selection and placement, rather than looking at typical or existing similar flowsheets as rules. As examples, the ilmenite tailings case study presented in this paper shows how advances in technology have allowed for increased recovery of -45 µm ilmenite by utilizing a multi-stage SLon® wet magnetic separator circuit equating to an additional 30 000 tons of ilmenite produced per year. The virgin chromite case study presented shows that through careful testing and circuit design efforts using RED technology, a 20% increase in overall chromite recovery was achieved over previous demonstration work.

"BASF Mining Solutions has developed a new-generation copper solvent extraction reagent that offers significant benefits over standard extractants currently available to the industry. As the name suggests, the new hightemperature (HT) extractant can be used at a higher operating temperature, but also exhibits significantly lower degradation rates, greater copper-toiron selectivity, and is totally nitration-proof compared with the standard extractants. Pilot-plant trials have also shown that lower aqueous-inorganic entrainment can be achieved. This paper investigates the technoeconomic benefit of using the HT extractant as an alternative to the standard extractant in a high-temperature application. The results of the technical evaluation showed that the use of the HT extractant reduces the extractant addition requirements and bleed volume from copper electrowinning; this smaller bleed requirement further reduces acid and limestone consumption, leading to a reduction in valuable metal losses. The results of the economic evaluation showed that the use of the HT extractant represents significant cost savings over that of the standard extractant. IntroductionCurrent solvent extraction (SX) reagents employed for the extraction of copper from typical pregnant leach solutions (PLS) at ambient conditions function well with minimal long-term effects on the extractant’s performance (Taute et al., 2015). This performance, however, deteriorates at elevated temperatures due to the degradation of the reagent’s hydroxyoximes. The degradation mechanism, acid-catalysed hydrolysis of the oxime, is accelerated by high temperature. This has a knock-on effect where the increase in degradation products increases the organic viscosity, leading to increased entrainment, crud formation, and ultimately to an increase in SX reagent consumption (Bender, Emmerich, and Nisbett, 2013).SX reagents also show an increase in the co-extraction of iron as the ferric concentration in the PLS increases. Co-extracted iron is transferred to electrowinning (EW) during stripping of the loaded organic and can adversely affect EW current efficiency. Iron in the EW circuit is typically managed by bleeding the electrolyte; however, this can lead to excessive consumption of EW reagents such as acid, cobalt, and mist-eliminating surfactants. The electrolyte bleed can also affect upstream consumption of reagents, such as lime, due to the high acid concentration recycled to leach."

Sampling and metallurgical testwork during various phases of engineering studies is of paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flowsheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring that appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical testwork support the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development. The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical testwork are just as important as the metallurgical testwork itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should consider the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy, and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical testwork program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design. The authors have observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical testwork carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. Some designs are based on benchmarks of apparently similar ore bodies or rely on buoyant metal prices supporting cash flows until rectifications can be implemented. Much debate has ensued over the past few years on the speed of transformation in the mining industry. By transformation is meant the degree to which the industry has met the requirements of the Mining Charter. In response to this, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) commissioned a research study in 2009 to ascertain the degree of industry compliance. The mining industry in response made a presentation to the Minerals Portfolio Committee in Parliament in 2011, during which it released aggregated figures on industry compliance to the Mining Charter. The conclusions of both of the studies are widely divergent. It is argued in this paper that both processes are flawed. The government-sponsored research is empirically and methodologically weak and the results therefore have to be taken with a great degree of caution. The Chamber of Mines figures, on the other hand, while faithful to the reporting of the Chamber member companies, do not represent the entire span of the industry but only the larger mining companies. It is further argued that in order to ascertain a true reflection of the industry an independent audit be undertaken using recognized social scientific survey methods.

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

An electrochemical investigation of the dissolution of copper, nickel, and copper-nickel alloys in ammonium carbonate solutions by M. J. NICOL, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Hons.) (Wits.) (Visitor) The dissolution of copper and nickel in ammonium carbonate solution was studied by techniques involving electrohemical anodic dissolution and ring-disc electrodes. The rate of oxidation of both copper and nickel by copper (11) was shown to be controlled mainly by diffusion to the surface. Variations in rate with changes in copper (11) concentration, agitation, pH, ammonia concentration, temperature, and copper (I) concentration were investigated and rationalized in terms of their effects on the electrochemical half-reactions involved. Evidence was found for the passivation of nickel and nickel-copper alloys of more than 50 per cent nickel.

The MRMR Classification System was developed specifically for mining applications, namely caving operations, and is one of three rock mass classification systems used in the South African mining industry today. Increased usage of the MRMR Classification System has raised concerns that it does not adequately address the role played by discontinuities, veins and cemented joints in a jointed rock mass. To address these concerns, Laubscher and Jakubec introduced the In-Situ Rock Mass Classification System (IRMR) in the year 2000. Although the IRMR System is more applicable to a jointed rock mass than the MRMR System, a quantitative comparison of the MRMR and IRMR Classification Systems indicates that there is not a significant difference between the resultant rock mass rating values derived from the two Classification Systems.

Refractory design remains the most fundamental factor in furnace construction. Refractory design details and proven technology consideration is of paramount importance to come up with an optimum furnace life and to maintain productivity in the life span of the furnace lining. The failure to produce a technically or operationally durable refractory design lining could give rise to pre-mature deterioration of the refractory lining and furnace shell. The premature failure of the furnace lining will lead to extensive heat losses, furnace bath shift, change in taphole orientation and alteration of the Pitch Circle Diameter. A combination of these were experienced at Zimbabwe Alloys? new high carbon ferrochrome furnace. The Zimbabwe Alloys experience has shown an excellent furnace performance in the first two years of operation although signs of an anomaly showed within the first six months of the new furnace. Production slowed down due to induced problems from refractory failure causing furnace distortions impacting on the availability of the furnace and smelting capacity. This paper presents the lessons learnt, measures taken to deal with the premature failure and constraints within which the situation was managed.

The paper introduces a computer simulation technique to estimate the target detection probabilities associated with search surveys. The technique takes into account the inherent randomness associated with the distributional properties of geologic targets. Use of the technique is illustrated through examples. The paper provides information as to how this technique can be used in obtaining the optimum sampling pattern and optimum spacing associated with target detection surveys.

De Beers' Finsch Mine is situated in the Northern Cape province, 170 km northwest of Kimberley. The concentrator facility, designed and constructed by Bateman Engineering, was commissioned in 1967 and upgraded in 1979 using diamond liberation and extraction technology available at the time of design. Since then significant advances in diamond processing and technology have been made and these -have been incorporated into the new main treatment plant and recovery plant flowsheets, making diamond liberation and recovery from the Pre-1979 dumps a viable economic option at Finsch."

There are basic areas of importance within a concentrator or mineral separation plant, which require focus to ensure acceptable recoveries, throughputs remain at an acceptable level and product grades meet specification. Professional and para-professionals within the mineral sands industry are in demand due to the booming resource sector. Added to this, new mineral sands operations are being commissioned straining the industry further. These factors have increased staff turnover and introduced many new people to the industry. It is essential these new entrants are armed with basic plant troubleshooting skills relevant to the minerals sands industry to minimize production lost through poor recoveries. Mineral sands processing does not involve highly technical or sophisticated unit processes. However, success is often slow to arise due to a lack of detailed understanding, as well as managing multiple interrelated unit processes within a plant. Fundamental background physical conditions (such as equipment loading and water quality) must be met for unit processes to be efficient. Technical management of these process plants should always include observation of these background conditions for they often provide the answer to underperformance. Examples are presented with an indication of the possible effects on recovery and product grade.
