Excessive build-up of methane and water pressures was identified as the leading cause of some Q/the roof falls in a coal mine in the eastern Transvaal. In order to characterize the migration of the methane and water into and around the mined coal seam, a laboratory investigation of the permeability of the roof strata was undertaken. The aim of the investigation was to correlate changes in the fades with changes in permeability to enable the prediction of possible zones of pressure buildup. The tests were carried out on samples from borehole core that had been obtained from the roof strata as part of the mine exploration programme. Permeability measurements were then conducted under atmospheric and triaxial-stress conditions. For the tests under atmospheric conditions, a modified Ohle cell was used and, for the tests under triaxial-stress conditions, a modified Hoek cell was used. The liquid equivalent permeability?s of the different samples were obtained by use of ASTM D4525- 85, and these were then used as a basis for comparison. Facies type, i.e. grain size, was found to have an influence on the permeability but, owing to the variable nature of the sediments, a range of permeability rather than a specific permeability value was associated with each type of Jades. The measured permeability was bound to decrease with an increase in gas pressure. The liquid equivalent permeability was bound to increase with an increase in grain size for the coarser-grained Jades, and to decrease with an increase in grain size for the finer-grained types. The application of an external stress regime to the sample was bound to reduce the permeability, but the amount of the reduction depended on the type of stress. The permeability was also found to depend on the recent stress history of the sample. The authors conclude that the methods described are useful for the correlation of facies type with permeability, but that the results are sensitive to changes in locality.

It has been found that the MnO content of a slag decreases sharply when direct current is applied to a 1T1£tal-Slagsystem consisting of liquid Mn-Si-Ccsat metals and MnO-SiO2-CaO-AI203 slag in graphite crucibles. This paper reports a preliminary investigation into the electrochemical effects of direct current on the metal-slag system, the silicon content of the metals, and the MnO content of the slag. The results show that, when a direct current of 7 A is maintained, the MnO content of a metal containing 10 to 11 per cent silicon by weight is reduced rapidly from 26,5 to 17,2 per cent by weight. This reduction seems to proceed further when the process is continued. When the direct current and the voltage are kept constant at TA and 4 V respectively, the MnO content of a metal containing 1 to 2 per cent silicon by weight is reduced to 1 from 25 per cent by weight, which results in a manganese yield of 96 per cent.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. Carbonatites are generally competent rock masses with rock mass rating class II rating 60–74. In spite of their competency, they tend to be affected by weak features like manganese-iron veins and/or in situ rock damage due to brecciation associated with carbonatite complexes. Rock slope failure in such hard rocks is complex since such structures within the rock mass form weak links that could potentially control slope instability. In this contribution, a numerical simulation using phase2 v 7.0 was carried out to investigate the influence of in situ rock damage on the stability of mine pit walls. The outcome reveals that, the existence of breccia in the competent rock mass has the capability to reduce the slope stability performance particularly at gentle dipping angles of emplacement in close range to the slope toe. However, as the emplacement position of breccia moves away from the pit wall, the stability performance increases at gentle dipping angle <50º. On the contrary, at the dipping angle of 50° the performance of slope reduced, and at steeper angles >50° the impact becomes negligible. Thus, from a series of analyses, mine design in brecciated rock masses, the ratio of 1:5 between the breccia distance from slope toe and pit depth should be implemented to counter its impact, and if the breccia is within or close to the pit limit, a deliberate effort must be made to mine it out.

The relationships revealed between ore hardness and specific energy consumed by crushing and grinding are described in the paper. A comparison of key technical and economical parameters of SAG and HPGR circuits is made, based on testing of several ore types for greenfield projects. The comparison of results make it possible to estimate efficiency of the technologies application, depending on ore hardness and taking into account potential risks for a circuit under design. "Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

The objective of this paper is to present some results of laboratory experiments during the investigation of stress-strain characteristics of Carboniferous sandstones at dynamic loading. During these experiments increasing frequency and the constant amplitude of dynamic loading and/or constant frequency at different amplitude of dynamic loading were applied. Der Gegenstand dieses Artikels ist, irgendeine von Ergebnissen von Laborexperimenten bei Messung der Spannungs- und Deformationscharakteristik der Karbonsandsteine bei ihrer dynamischen Belastung vorzustellen. Im Laufe diesen Experimenten wurden entweder anwachsende Frequenzen bei konstanter Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung, oder gleiche Frequenzen bei variabler Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung verwendet. L&apos;objectif de ce papier est présenter quelques résultats d&apos;expériences de laboratoire pendant l&apos;enquête de caractéristiques de la tension – deformation de grès Carbonifère à sollicitation dynamique. The corrosion properties of iron-based composite materials containing graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement were investigated. The effects of silicon carbide reinforcement were investigated by adding 0.5% graphite and 1%, 2%, and 4% SiC. A powder metallurgy method was used to produce the composite samples. Iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were blended for one hour with a threeaxis mixer and then unidirectionally pressed under a pressure of 750 MPa. After pressing, the composite materials were sintered at 1100°C for one hour. The corrosion properties and microstructure, density, and hardness properties of the composite materials that can affect the corrosion properties were also investigated. It was determined that the pore ratio and hardness of the composite material increased, and corrosion resistance decreased, with increasing silicon carbide content.

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. "This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives have several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper. The main findings are as follows:•,Coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate •,For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where, ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition •,Significant errors could be made if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen) •,For elemental analyses, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range •,For representation of sulphur in coal, double-counting due to SO3 in the ash analysis should be avoided •,Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2; however, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV results in significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy (up to 6.9% error for a set of South African coals). Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than the abovementioned four, provided the enthalpy is corrected •,It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ is incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to the form of carbon being different than graphite should be used, as that would imply doublecounting some effects."

The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation&apos;s Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

A new model for hollow rock bolts which comprises rock material, hollow bolt material, bolt/rock interface, is developed on the base of the composite element method (CEM). The main advantage of the new model is that it can be incorporated into the conventional finite element analysis. So the mesh generation of bolted rock structures becomes more convenient and feasible, which is very important in the optimisation of reinforcement design: the mesh can be kept unchanged when the number and orientation of bolts are adjusted. The comparison of the calculation results with a conventional FE approach shows the robustness of the proposed method. Un nouveau modèle numérique de boulons creux comprenant la roche, le matériau du boulon creux et l’interface roche / boulon est développé sur la base de la méthode des éléments composites (CEM). L’avantage principal du nouveau modèle est la possibilité de l’incorporer dans une analyse aux éléments finis conventionnelle. Ainsi la génération du maillage d’une structure rocheuse ancrée devient plus simple ce qui est très important pour une optimisation du projet : en cas d’ajustement du nombre et de l’orientation des boulons, le maillage reste inchangé. La comparaison de résultats de calcul avec ceux obtenus par un code aux éléments finis conventionnel montre la robustesse de la méthode proposée. Auf der Grundlage der Verbund-Element-Methode (CEM) wird ein neues Modell für hohle Reibungsanker entwickelt, das den Fels, das Ankermaterial und die Kontaktfläche Fels / Anker umfasst. Der Hauptvorteil des neuen Modells ist die Möglichkeit, es in eine konventionelle FE-Analyse einzubetten. So wird die Netz-Generierung für verankerte Fels-Bauwerke einfacher, was für die Optimierung des Verankerungs-Projekts von Wichtigkeit ist: wenn Zahl und Orientierung der Anker variiert werden, bleibt das Netz unverändert. Der Vergleich von Rechenergebnissen mit solchen aus einer konventionellen FE-Rechnung zeigen die Robustheit der vorgestellten Methode.

Different concentration techniques were evaluated for preconcentration of a mineral ore at a coarser size to avoid energy and resource wastage. Specifically, the aim was to reduce milling costs and energy required in the beneficiation of tin. In this study, cassiterite (0.17% Sn) was the mineral of interest in a pegmatite ore body associated with quartz (SiO₂ > 60%) and alumina (Al₂O3 > 20%). Three concentration techniques, namely dense media, shaking table, and flotation, coupled with characterization analysis, were used to assess the concentration response. The results confirmed that particle size and mineral liberation impact the separation process. High recovery and grade were obtained with gravity concentration methods (dense media and shaking table) for coarser (+300 to +212 μm) and intermediate (+150 to +53 μm) particle sizes. Lower recovery and grade were identified for much finer sizes (−53 to −38 μm). Flotation produced a high-grade product at a relatively low recovery and appeared to be only applicable to finer grains. Separation efficiency based on Schulz’s equation measured a segregation performance of 74.8% for dense medium separation and 60.7% for the shaking table for the coarse and intermediate particle sizes. Flotation only achieved a separation of 30%–40%. The results suggest that use of dense media separation as a rough preconcentration method prior to further grinding, and the utilization of a more advanced concentration technique for mineral recovery and upgrade, constitute a successful approach to improve process economics.

Geological and geotechnical data are essential for the design of tunnels. To determine the rock mass behavior and the support of a planned tunnel excavation a consistent method for rock mass characterization and excavation and support determination has been developed. Probabilistic data processing with analytical methods is used for the quantification of the procedure and allows an evaluation of the applicability and the technical risk of different excavation and support methods. The sensitivity of the procedure on selected input parameters is highlighted in a parametric study. Finally an application of the procedure illustrates the use of the described method of probabilistic excavation and support determination for tunnels. Des données géologiques et géotechniques sont décisives pour la planification d’un tunnel. Pour la détermination du comportement des strates, le choix du soutènement et de la méthode de progression une description compréhensible de la montagne a été développée. À l&apos;aide d&apos;un traitement de données probabiliste, la procédure proposée est transposée quantitative sur une base de méthodes analytiques. De cette manière l&apos;évaluation des méthodes de construction et la détermination du risque technique deviennent possibles. La sensitivité de la procédure de différents paramètres d&apos;entrée est représentée dans une étude de paramètre. Pour finir, l&apos;application de la procédure décrite est montrée à l’aide d&apos;un cas pratique. Geologische und geotechnische Daten sind entscheidend für die Planung von Tunnels. Für die Ermittlung des Gebirgsverhaltens und der Festlegung von Ausbruch und Stützung wurde ein nachvollziehbarer Ablauf der Gebirgsbeschreibung entwickelt. Mit Hilfe von probabilistischer Datenverarbeitung auf Grundlage analytischer Methoden wird die vorgeschlagene Prozedur quantiativ umgesetzt. Dadurch werden die Bewertung von Baumethoden und die Ermittlung des technischen Risikos ermöglicht. Die Sensitivität des Verfahrens von einzelnen Eingangsparametern wird in einer Parameterstudie dargestellt. Abschließend wird anhand eines Beispiels die Anwendung des beschriebenen Verfahrens gezeigt.

This volume, which was advertised in the December, 1968, issue of the Journal at a pre-publication price of £4, is edited by W. Ryan of Warren Spring Laboratory and published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London. It is an up-to-date review of the operations of some 50 or so companies whose activities embrace the extraction and refinement of metals in the United Kingdom. Thirty-four metals are discussed, ranging from aluminium to zirconium and also there are chapters on ferro-alloys, non-ferrous alloys, high purity metals and metalloids, the platinum group metals and the rare earths. The sources of the various metals are given, followed generally by a brief description of the primary recovery process. Thereafter the operations of specific companies that deal in a particular metal are described in some detail. Certain metals such as barium, bismuth, gallium, thallium and zirconium are perforce covered very briefly as their commercial application is limited but in other cases, especially aluminium, copper lead and zinc, fairly detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided. This publication should be of considerable value to students as it presents modern procedures with regard to the refining and uses of the particular metals under review. This information may not be available from text books which in any case tend towards obsolescence. The book should also prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of practising metallurgists providing, as it does, a schedule of most of the metallurgical companies operating in the United Kingdom. The quality of the paper and binding, the clarity of printing and illustrations and the arrangement of the subject matter are excellent and are subjects for which the editor and publishers are to be commended.
