In initial laboratory tests with a travelling submerged jet on artificially prepared clay it was found that the cavity depth is dependent on the stagnation pressure of the jet and the undrained shear strength of the clay. In addition, it has been observed that the increase in cavity depth with jet pressure is stronger at higher jet pressures. It is assumed that this can be explained by cavitation of the jet at higher jet pressures. At cavitation a cone of bubbles is formed around the jet, which reduces the exchange of momentum between the jet and the surrounding water. This results in a higher jet velocity and a higher stagnation pressure at a specified distance from the nozzle exit. In literature, no relation between the jet pressure of a free submerged cavitating jet and stagnation pressures was found. Additional tests were carried out to determine this relationship. Because practical dredging occurs at relatively large water depths, these tests were performed in a pressure vessel at different pressure levels. It is concluded that the efficiency of a jet (defined as the stagnation pressure at a certain distance divided by the jet pressure), for stand-off-distances smaller than 45 times the nozzle diameter, increases significantly by cavitation in comparison to the non-cavitating situation. However, the jet pressure required for a fully developed cavitation cone increases strongly with water depth. At dredging depths of 20 m and more, the necessary jet pressures are higher than normally applied in dredging practice. Thus in spite of the importance of cavitation in laboratory tests at atmospheric pressure, in normal dredging practice cavitation is of less importance.

One of the biggest problems in open pit mining is slope stability. The avoidance of slope stability problems depends on a comprehensive assessment of environmental and operational factors such as geology, climate, and mining activities. In the light of these considerations, slope geometries should be determined in accordance with engineering principles. In this research, the slope stability of rock slopes in a mine opened in a gneiss geological unit has been studied. Production activities were ceased in 2019 due to the slope movements in the eastern part of the quarry. In order to safely continue the production, field works were primarily carried out. To assess slope stability, detailed discontinuity surveys were carried out on bench faces. Subsequently, kinematic and numerical analyses were employed to identify geometries that are expected to maintain stability under the prevailing geological structures and environmental constraints. Engineering geological studies such as scanline measurements in steps and investigation of potential failure mechanisms by kinematic analysis technique were carried out. Small module reactor and Q-slope rock mass classification systems were used to evaluate slope stability. Based on these classification systems potential unstable rock slopes were identified and thematic maps were created using geographic information systems. The most suitable slope geometries are suggested for these slopes. In addition, the improvement methods suggested by the rock mass classification systems were proposed for these slopes.

The standard technology for processing of gold-bearing sulfide raw material has many problems associated with the use of cyanide as a gold lixiviant. Therefore, many tests to find alternative gold recovery methods are being undertaken. This paper describes some technological solutions, which can become alternatives to cyanide technology in the future. Pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory gold-bearing sulfide concentrates from five different Russian gold deposits were investigated. Concentrate 1 was gold-copper concentrate. Concentrate 2 was gold-pyrite concentrate. Concentrates 3-5 were pyrite-arsenopyrite double refractory concentrates. The POX tests were at temperatures of 110, 200 and 220 °C and oxygen pressures of 1.5, 2.4 and 3.0 MPa were carried out. Gold lixiviants, such as chloride, thiosulfate, sulfite and thiocyanate were tested. The recovery of gold from sulfide gold-bearing concentrates by non-cyanide methods was 97- 99%, and from double refractory concentrates, 86-93%. The tested reagents are less toxic than cyanide, and their use will reduce of the cost of gold production. These methods make it possible to recover gold in acidic media, and eliminate the washing operation and POX slurry neutralisation. In addition, precious metals recovery from POX cakes using lead reduction smelting was investigated. It was shown that the “POX-pyrometallurgical” technology for double refractory concentrates processing could be used with recoveries of gold and silver of 97 and 96%, respectively. Discussion C. G. Hinds (Member): The climatic chamber at Kloof Gold Mine was built to the design referred to in the paper presented by Professor Wyndham and Dr Strydom. As no suitable underground facilities existed for the acclimatization of labourers at the rate required, mining operations would have been severely restricted had there not been a climatic room timeously built on surface. The climatic room can accommodate 120 labourers per 4-!-hour shift. The standards laid down by the Human Sciences Laboratory were and still are being adhered to as strictly as possible. Through a shortage of European personnel the recommended degree of white supervision could not be adhered to and the use of Bantu assistants with a minimum education of Standard 8 was introduced. This is considered to have met with sufficient success to warrant acceptance as policy. The climatic room was brought into operation on the 1st September, 1967, i.e. two months after stoping at Kloof was commenced. The figures quoted herein therefore pertain to the period between that date and the 31st March, 1969, when the main shaft and the main surface fans were commissioned. The areas worked were sited between 5016 ft and 6 365 ft below surface. Virgin rock temperatures ranged between 92°F and 99°F. Stopes are cleaned by hand lashing. During the 20 months of stoping prior to the commissioning of the main shaft, mining operations at Kloof were effected through the Harvie Watt shaft of the Libanon Gold Mining Company Limited. In this period 10 452 Bantu labourers were acclimatized in the following categories: Experienced workers 7 326 New to the industry 2 086 Re-acclimatized 1 040 It will be noted that during the period, labourers 'new to the industry' averaged 22 per cent of the intake. This percentage fluctuated from time to time and reached 42 per cent. (The present percentage is 60.) The greatest number acclimatized during anyone month occurred in February, 1969 when 1234 Bantu were treated. The greatest number of Bantu acclimatized during any 8-day period was 411. As many as four X 41/2 hour shifts were run in 24 hours. The number of men found to be heat intolerant over the period of 20 months was 33 out of a total 9 412 Bantu. The following tabulation illustrates the history of the build-up of manpower and the climatic conditions under which they worked: The average dip of the reef is 35°. The number of heat stroke and heat exhaustion cases during the period of 20 months under most difficult ventilation conditions was Nil.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is associated with various risk factors in South African mines. We investigated the association between standard threshold shifts (STSs) and exposure to noise and platinum mine dust (PMD), using demographic data, five years of annual audiometry screening results, and noise and dust exposure data. Miners’ age, sex, percentage hearing loss (PLH), and dust and noise exposure data were gathered, and a linear mixed effects regression model used to predict STS. Average occupational exposure levels to noise and dust were calculated from recorded measurements. A total of 12 692 records were analysed. Most miners were male (89.6%) and more than 50% were younger than 41 years. More than 70% were exposed to > 85 dBA noise and 58% were exposed to 1.5–2.99 mg/m3 PMD. Changes in hearing levels ranged from 8.3 dBHL at baseline (2014/2015) to 10 dBHL in 2016 (STS), with no changes thereafter. The model showed that the estimated effect on STS for males was 27% and 21% higher than for females, for the left and right ear, respectively The estimated effect of age, PLH, noise exposure and years of exposure on STS was < 10% for each variable. There was no statistically significant association between PMD and STS. The combined effects of age, sex, years of exposure to noise, and noise exposure levels, and strength of associations can be used to predict STS for this group of miners. Our findings may be used to measure the efficacy of the mine’s hearing conservation programme.

FeCo alloys play an important role in soft magnetic materials with a wide range of technological applications due to their high saturation magnetization and Curie temperature. However, these alloys have low ductility at room temperature. The ductility can be improved by the ternary addition of elements such as V. A density functional theory supercell approach was used to generate B2 Fe50Co50-xVx (0 ≤ x ≤ 50) structures and the properties were evaluated at different atomic percentage compositions to determine the ductility at room temperature. The structures were fully optimized to obtain better equilibrium ground-state properties such as lattice parameters and thermodynamic properties for both binary and ternary systems. The stability of Fe50Co50- xVx was evaluated from the heats of formation, elastic properties, and phonon dispersion curves. Furthermore, magnetic strength was evaluated from magnetic moments. It was found that all structures are thermodynamically stable due to the negative heats of formation. The calculated Pugh’s ratio and Poisson’s ratio confirm that alloying with V effectively improved the ductility. It was also found that Fe50Co50-xVx showed a positive shear modulus for the entire concentration range investigated, in agreement with phonon dispersion curves. The ternary addition of V to the FeCo system resulted in reduced magnetic strength due to a decrease in magnetic moments. These findings reveal that B2 FeCo-V alloys can be used as components and actuators for the automotive industry.

The main challenges in most low grade iron ore deposits are finding the optimum flowsheet for beneficiation to achieve a final concentrate from both technical and economic viewpoints. Dry preconcentration techniques are being used to assist in reducing the amount of ROM feed to the plant. In this paper the benefits of utilising a dry cobbing magnetic separation technique for upgrading the product of HPGR in a closed circuit with dry screen 4 and 1.4 mm by performing a pilot scale test work was investigated. The experimental test work was done on two sample types of Yogi BIF magnetite iron ore located in Western Australia. Prior to magnetic separation studies, detailed characterisation of the feed materials including physical, chemical, mineralogical and magnetic properties were carried out. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters: drum rotation speed (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 m/s), magnetic field intensity (1100 and 3800 gauss) and feed size (minus 4 and 1.4 mm) were investigated. The results revealed that sample type1 with 33.90% Fe could be upgraded to 41.51% Fe by using a stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator with 69.12% weight recovery and 84.36% Fe recovery at a size of 4 mm. Also for sample type2, it is possible to increase Fe grade from 29.84% to above 36.68% with 75.58% weight recovery and 90.32% Fe recovery by applying one stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator to a 4 mm size sample. The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental Sampling Error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centered on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a), of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) method and the heterogeneity test (HT) method purport to provide such a constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponengand Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, while the third is an Archaean-type, shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appears to be too small and does not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis, are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents. "Low-pressure cold gas dynamic spraying was used to deposit WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo coatings onto mild steel. Dense coatings with very low porosities were produced. No decarburization occurred during deposition and no deleterious phases were formed. The coatings were subjected to standardized material characterization tests, as well as slurry abrasion testing to assess their wear behaviour. The wear tests were conducted in synthetic minewater-silica slurries, while distilled watersilica slurries were used as a control. The hardness of the coatings, 512HV0.3 and 458HV0.3 for WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo respectively, are comparable to those achieved using high-temperature coating processes. The abrasion wear rates for both coatings were less than 5 mg/min and 10 mg/min in the distilled water-silica and synthetic mine water-silica slurries respectively. The approximately 50% increase in wear rate in the synthetic minewater slurry is attributed to a synergistic corrosive wear mechanism. The predominant wear mechanisms were identified as binder smearing and delamination, with carbide grain fracture and pull-out. IntroductionSlurry abrasion is a common phenomenon in mining operations, particularly in pipelines transporting, for example, sand-water slurries. This type of wear can cause pipeline fracture, shortened operational lifetimes, and impede pipeline efficiency. To reduce or limit abrasion, thermally sprayed tungsten-carbide-based coatings are often used as pipe linings (Kanchan et al., 2010). This is due to their attractive mechanical properties, which include high wear resistance, stiffness, hardness, compressive strength, and tensile strength. These properties are provided by the coating microstructure and composition, which is a blend of hard, wear-resistant tungsten carbide (WC) particles embedded in a fracture-tough metallic binder phase (Brookes, 1997). Cobalt (Co) is the most commonly used binder due to its excellent wetting of the WC phase and moderate mechanical properties; however, its application is limited to non-corrosive environments as it has a low corrosion and oxidation resistance (Andren, 2001). Nickel (Ni) may also be used as a binder, and has been shown to have superior oxidation and corrosion resistance, but in some applications may not have the required mechanical properties (Kim et al., 2006)."

When gold plant residues are cycloned for producing a coarse product for backfilling the gold and uranium values are upgraded in the backfill product. Gravity concentration, wet high intensity magnetic separation and froth flotation were investigated as first-stage recovery processes to recover these economic values from backfill prior to placement underground. This paper addresses the recovery of values from flotation concentrates and also details the economic feasibility of a treatment route including flotation, followed by roasting of flotation concentrate to liberate gold entrapped in pyrite and reverse gold leaching of the calcine so produced.

Due to grade estimation uncertainty, two statistical errors can occur. The Type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, despite the true value being below the break-even grade. This material is dilution. The Type II error is where the material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, although the true grade is actually above the break-even grade. This material is not mined and is lost. The uncertainty was assumed to follow a normal distribution in a previous study. For this study, estimated block values are compared to those determined after mining (the best estimate of the true grade). This actual data from four mines shows that the uncertainty follows a Laplace. There is no single solution regarding adjusting the cut-off grade away from the break-even grade, considering estimation uncertainty, that could be applied to all gold mines. However, adjusting the cut-off grade downwards (up to 22% for one mine) is noted when optimizing the profit considering grade uncertainties. This type of adjustment could open up significant mining areas and extend the life of the mine.

The use of geometallurgical modelling is becoming more common in concentrator plant design and during the operational phase. Predictive modelling aims to define optimised process parameters for the concentrator plant to accommodate variability within the ore feed. The main objective of this study is to show how the metallurgical response of different types of ore blends can be simulated using kinetic models derived from experimental flotation tests with different geometallurgical end-member ore types and their blends. For these validation tests, four different end-member ore types containing different ratios of chalcopyrite, chalcocite and oxidised copper minerals from Rich Metal Group’s Madneuli copper-gold mine, Georgia, were tested. Kinetic flotation tests, including both rougher and cleaner flotation tests, were carried out. The simulations were performed using HSC Chemistry software based on mineral compositions of the ores and kinetic models using rectangular distribution equations and flowsheet model. Simulated and experimental results of copper grade, copper recovery and concentrate mass pull correlated well with R2 values of >0.95. Based on these results, the metallurgical response of different ore blends can be simulated based on the flotation kinetics of end-member ore types. The use of this kind of simulation will create savings during the test work phase and increase the flexibility and predictability in the processing stage. Mill liners provide the wear-resistant surface within grinding mills, they also impart motion to the mill charge, ie the grinding process, by providing the key between the charge and mill shell, and, at the discharge end, they remove the ground contents of the mill. As semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills have grown in size the process aspects of liner design and their impact on mill performance have become particularly important. While feedback from practical experience is critical to good mill liner design, increasingly sophisticated computer-based tools are being developed to assist in mill liner design.

"Fragment size distributions play an important part in the design and planning of block cave mining operations. Though several methods have been proposed for estimating fragment size distributions in advance of mining, the calibration of these estimating procedures to field measurements has been a challenge. The Block Size Estimator (BSE) program was developed for providing an assessment of primary fragmentation expected in a block cave mine using drill-core piece length data and joint characteristics from the exploration and geotechnical evaluation programmes. In order to validate the results from the BSE program, the drill-core piece length data and the joint characteristics in different rock types from the DOZ block cave mine in Indonesia were used to help generate fragment size distributions in different areas of the mine. The predicted fragment size distributions were compared with the fragmentation observed at the drawpoints during operation of the mine.This paper presents the details of the validation of the fragment size estimates by the BSE program using fragment size distribution data from the drawpoints at the extraction level at the DOZ block cave mine, and the challenges encountered in developing reasonable correlations between the estimated and measured fragment size distributions. IntroductionThe assessment of fragmentation is an important aspect of the design and planning of the block cave mining method, and forms an integral part of the design of the excavations at the extraction level and the selection of material handling systems for transporting the ore to the processing stations. Secondary blasting requirements can also be estimated based on the fragment size distributions developed for the block cave (Laubscher, 1994).Several methods of estimating fragment size distributions in block cave mines have been developed based on joint set parameters estimated from structural data from oriented core drilling campaigns and mapping of available excavations and outcrops. The BCF program (Esterhuizen, 1999) estimates the fragmentation using a combination of empirical, analytical, and rational methods to model the behaviour of materials during the primary and secondary fragmentation processes. The program JKFrag uses advanced tessellation of joint traces to create rock blocks and then generate fragment size distributions (Brown, 2002). Nickson, Coulson and Hussey (2000) presented the details of processing of the geotechnical data from the Mont Porphyre project, including an assessment of block sizes from the data collected on the core logging sheet. The distance between natural fractures was used to create distributions of block lengths, and a distribution of potential block sizes was estimated assuming that the blocks had equal dimensions in all directions. The results agreed closely with the results of the BCF program. Hadjigeorgiou, Grennon, and Nickson (2002) demonstrated the use of oriented borehole data to provide characteristic block size distributions for a mining project using a software package called Stereoblock, which generates a three-dimensional joint network for a given volume and calculates the volumes of blocks created by the intersections of these joints, simulated as circular planes. The distributions of joint orientation and joint spacing generated from statistical analysis of the oriented core data are used for the creation of the Stereoblock model. The diameter of the circular planes representing the joints is determined based on the mean and standard deviation of the joint trace length obtained from scan-line mapping."

Two detonation models, IDeX for ideal VOD and CPeX for non-ideal VOD, were used to predict the velocities of detonation (VOD) of five explosives: ANFO, a bulk emulsion, and three repumpable emulsions (R100 Gold, R100 Diamond, and R105). The theoretical VODs were compared with the in-hole VODs of the explosives, and the predicted and actual values were found to be within experimental error for ANFO and the bulk emulsion. The results were not consistent for the repumpable emulsions. The discrepancies can be explained as being due to variations in mining and loading practices. The results show that the detonation models can be effective tools in predicting the behaviour of explosives in different diameters and rock confinements, provided that the user is aware of the factors that can affect the optimal usage of explosives and equipment.
