The high price of pollucite ore, its limited availability, and the need to provide stack removal of S02 present formidable obstacles to the use of pure cesium as a seeding material in MHD power generation. Cost estimates indicate that mixed potassium-cesium seeding is preferable to the use of either pure cesium or pure potassium. Cheaper electricity and higher open-cycle MHD operating efficiencies result from the use of mixed seed. Savings of $3,000,000 per year in power costs for a 1,000-MWE open-cycle MHD power-plant are envisioned if the mixed seeding technique is adopted.

The method of analysis was to test a large model containing potentially significant variables and on the basis of the results obtained, to reduce the model to one containing only the essential significant variables. This stepwise procedure of "scanning" a large proposed model and subsequently condensing the model consisted of two cycles of the same series of computational procedures. Data Preparation A majority of the variables measured were continuous over a specific range of values; for example, the variable "Width Ratio" varied in practice from 0.25 to 1.00. However, "dummy" values were assigned to certain operational variables in order that these varia¬bles would have numerical expression. The following variables were described in this manner. The Bureau of Mines oil-shale program, initiated in April 1944, is concerned with the future utilization of oil shale in the United States as a source of liquid fuel. One phase of this program is the accumulation of information on the location, extent, and richness of oil-shale deposits that may be suitable for processing to oil and related products. A previous publication5/ presented, by means of logs, the oil yields of sections of the largest known oil-shale deposit in this country -the shales of the Green River formation occurring in adjoining portions of the states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. This present supplementary report presents the oil yields of cores from 48 holes drilled during 1952 to 1954 in the Green River formation of Colorado, which is distributed over an area of more than 1,000 square miles. The oil yields of the 48 oil-shale sections, involving the assay of 9,651 samples, representing 22,451 feet of core, are presented by means of logs. In addition, the oil yields of samples comprising the maximum sections of 15 gallon-per-ton shale are tabulated for these cores and for the 28 cores from Colorado which were logged in the previous report.

In connection with its continuing studies of the characteristics of alloys and alloying elements, the Bureau of Mines investigated the crystal structure of fused boron. This report describes how the structure of fused boron was found to be rhombohedral by the powder method for crystal-structure determinations by X-ray diffraction. The determinations of the crystal structure of boron reported in the literature were made on crystals prepared by various methods such as electrolysis, thermal decomposition of a boride, or by hydrogen reduction of boron tribromide. Table 1 summarizes the data found in the literature on the crystal structure of boron. The information shows the following: (1) Three structures have been reported for boron, (2) boron prepared by different processes--or even by varied conditions of a process--produces crystals of different structure, and (3) no information is given on the crystal structure of fused boron.

"Correlated spectroscopic and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly crushed silica to find whether the fracture-induced, silicon related (Si-0· or Si· type) free radicals play a direct role in the mechanism of hemolysis by silica particles. The free radical content of the silica particles was controlled through the radical decay, thermal annealing, and boiling processes, and was followed with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Portions of the same sample were evaluated for their hemolytic potential, employing sheep erthyrocyte and optical absorption techniques. The results indicate little, if any, correlation between the amount of the silicon-based radicals and the hemolytic potential of the fresh dusts, but these or related radical sites might be contributors to silica cytoxicity and fibrogenicity via peroxidative pathways .INTRODUCTIONIn an earlier convnunication (1.) from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates free rad;cals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubin; et al.(2) have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO· and Si·-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum (10-10 torr) (3) and subsequent exposure to air (3), and to other gases (4), these radicals were identified (2) as being formed by the hemolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si· and SiO· ,radical with atmosphere. Fubin; et al. (2) also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anea (5) had reported that lipid peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radical studies on a given Quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory (1,6,7). We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radical measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust’s free radical content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity poteni1al was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the tox1c1ty test because it 1s a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane (8). The f1brotic potential was followed.by measuring the dust-induced lipid perox1dat1on. us1ng linole1c ac1d as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues.to the mechanism of the Quartz-related cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity."

This report describes the elemental characterization of chromite and related materials at the Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center. Analytical methods for determining the major constituents, representing extensive experience, refinement, and development, are described and fully annotated. This presentation should allow other laboratories to use these methods and obtain comparable results with a minimum of time needed for familiarization with individual methods.

The method of using large-diameter augers to recover coal was introduced to the mining industry about the end of World War II, and production of bituminous coal with augers has increased steadily to an estimated 7 million tons, or approximately 1.4 percent of the total mined in 1956. Although auger mining has proved to be a reliable and economical method of mining coal, a number of unfortunate fatal accidents have been experienced; consequently the need for these recommended safety standards is indicated for this comparatively new method of coal mining. As mining methods and equipment change from time to time and new hazards are introduced, these standards will be revised; therefore, questions or suggestions from the coal-mining industry will be welcomed and carefully considered.

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

During the course of the work: it was found desirable to investigate the sensitizing action of nitrostarch in mixtures of ammonium nitrate containing low percentages of this material. Data were derived as to the sensitivity to decomposition by heat and the completeness of detonation and,of detonation of straight ammonium nitrate, as compared with ammonium nitrate-nitrostrarch mixtures containing 1 to 10 per cent of nitrostarch.The ammonium nitrate was a sample of coated material obtained from the salvage of amatol shells. Revolutionary changes in the organization of work have far outpaced our knowledge about the implications of these changes for the quality of working life and for safety and health on the job. This gap in knowledge is one of the 21 priority areas for research under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)—a framework crafted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and its partners to guide research into the next decade. This report was developed under NORA as the first attempt to develop a comprehensive research agenda for investigating and reducing occupational safety and health risks associated with the changing organization of work. Research and development needs identified in the agenda include (1) improved surveillance mechanisms to better track how the organization of work is changing, (2) accelerated research on safety and health implications of the changing organization of work, (3) increased research focus on organizational interventions to protect safety and health, and (4) steps to formalize and nurture organization of work as a distinctive field in occupational safety and health.

To determine the availability of aluminum from world bauxite resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated 139 bauxite deposits worldwide and evaluated the potential production of aluminum based on the demonstrated resources of bauxite ore from 91 mines and deposits in 22 market economy countries. The demonstrated resources of the bauxite mines and deposits included in this study represent an in situ resource of 20.2 billion metric tons of bauxite. Total identified bauxite resources in market economy countries amount to roughly 31.9 billion tons. Of the demonstrated resource, some 18.8 billion tons of bauxite considered minable provide a production potential of 3.6 billion tons of primary aluminum. Given the wide geographic distribution of bauxite deposits, stable supplies of bauxite for aluminum production seem assured well into the next century. However, a tight market situation could develop during the 1990's unless the real price of aluminum increases enough to stimulate massive new investments in production capacity, particularly in refining and smelting. This study indicates that a real price of at least $0.85 per pound (in January 1980 dollars) would be necessary to stimulate the required investments and provide a sufficient rate of return on invested capital.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a long-term groundwater monitoring and site characterization program at an abandoned 10-ha, acid-producing, copper-gold tailings impoundment in north-central Washington State. The purpose was to investigate contaminant release and transport, and attenuation mechanisms in the tailings, sediments below the tailings, and gravels downgradient of the impoundment. This report summarizes the monitoring results and physical properties of the tailings, the sediments below the tailings, and the groundwater system associated with the tailings. Water samples from the vadose and saturated zones of the impoundment were analyzed for 15 constituents. Concentrations of the same constituents were determined in water samples up to 3 m beneath the impoundment and in the shallow colluvium and deep bedrock at 76, 335, and 550 m downgradient and 168 m upgradient. Constituent concentrations within the tailings are quite variable and are influenced by pH, depth of oxidation, grain-size differential (surface area), hydraulic gradient, groundwater mixing, and the presence of hardpan layers, carbonaceous material, and organic matter. Most of the metal constituents decreased to background or near-background concentrations in the farthest downgradient well.

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Analytical studies of formation waters are widely used by the petroleum industry as an aid in solving problems such as identifying intrusive waters , corrosion studies , treating injection water , and choosing open or closed water- injection systems . The solution of a problem is often simplified when reliable analyses of the waters under consideration have been made previously . Chemical analyses and electrical resistivity measurements are presented on 267 samples from 74 fields in south Arkansas , and 199 samples from 80 fields in north Louisiana .

The pressure and flame development of the methane-air-nitrogen system was investigated in the Bureau's l2-foot-diameter sphere to define buoyancy effects and to develop relationships for predicting venting requirements. Pressure rise (?P) is defined as a function of time (t) and nitrogen dilution and is shown to deviate noticeably from the cubic law (?P = kt3), depending upon the period of combustion and the mixture composition. Corresponding flame speed (Sf) and burning velocity (Su) data are given which show that Sf is time dependent and that Na dilution has a greater effect than air dilution in inhibiting the flame propagation. The Su data agree with "accepted" values and are unique in that they are based on much larger flames than those used in other investigations. Downward propagation limits are shown to depend mainly upon buoyant forces, which can affect the burning of even stoichiometric CH4-air systems. Theoretical expressions, based on the mixture burning velocity and expansion ratio, are given for predicting the venting requirements for ignitions of hydrocarbon-air-nitrogen mixtures in spherical or cubical enclosures.

To meet a growing need for thorium metal of high purity and amenability to fabrication, the Bureau of Mines devised a method for preparing thorium metal by the reduction of thorium tetrachloride. Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorinating calcined thorium oxalate with carbon tetrachloride. The crude thorium tetrachloride, containing oxygen-bearing compounds, was purified by a double vacuum distillation at 800 to 900° C., and thorium metal was made in the form of a dense sponge by the reaction of metallic sodium or magnesium with thorium tetrachloride at 800° C. Vacuum arc melting was used to consolidate the sponge metal to ingot form for evaluation of its physical and chemical properties.

"INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex substance consisting of many different constituents representing many chemical compounds, very few of which are known. It is homo genetic, however, in that it is derived almost entirely from plants. But plants as a whole are complex, being composed of a large number of tissues, each consisting of a large number of cells in a great number of arrangements and composed of a number of chemical compounds in great variety of proportions, and enclosing a large number of waste products representing a large number of' chemical compounds as cell contents. Coal should therefore be expected to be a very complex substance.That coals are formed from plants is no longer debated, but the manner in which coal was formed from the plants leaves many problems still unsolved. However, in general it is now conceded that all coals of all ranks and ages had their origin in deposits completely analogous to our peat deposits of today and that coal formation is a process that runs through the whole series, beginning with peat, and through, the various ranks of lignite, subbituminous, high-, medium-, and low-volatile bituminous, semianthracite, and anthracite in a related chain. In the study of coal, it is therefore of the utmost importance to study and to know not only the plants contributing but .also the manner in which they are transformed into the substances forming the deposits. It is therefore of the greatest value to review briefly the formation of :,eat as it is known today, and to inquire into the facts as to what plants contribute to peat, what parts and products prevail, what are the chemical compounds that enter and which prevail."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated synthetic fluorspar as a substitute for natural fluorspar flux in basic cupola ironmaking. The synthetic fluor-spars tested were prepared from waste fluosilicic acid generated during the processing of fluorapatite ore. The cupola trials showed the synthetic products to be the equivalent of natural fluorspar from an operational standpoint. However, wet scrubber sampling showed that substantial losses of volatilized fluorine occurred from the cupola during operation. The losses during synthetic fluorspar trials considerably exceeded those from natural fluorspar trials. Laboratory viscosity testing, using a high-temperature rotational viscometer, confirmed this finding and indicated that fluorspar volatility in slags is related to slag basicity. Synthetic fluorspar is accordingly recommended more for highly basic cupola operation (>1.3 basicity) than for neutral or acid operation, because of the increased potential for pollution and baghouse filter detezioration"
