As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and state regulators increase the stringency and enforcement of regulations concerning emissions produced by open-air detonation of energetic materials, research must provide the means of obtaining emissions data. The BangBox emissions testing program established the technical foundations for emissions characterization which have been accepted by the USEPA and other regulatory agencies; the technical issues remaining are nettlesome and require new approaches in test procedures.

The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily. At an underground limestone mine in the Central United States; there were plans for the installation of a limestone processing plant. The special design and layout of the plant called for the installation of a tunnel from the underground mine to the surface above. The dimensions of the tunnel would be 10 feet high, 20 feet wide, and would be 500 feet long on a 17 degree incline. The tunnel would be used for the transportation of raw stone to the surface by a conveyor. A second conveyor would transport processed limestone into the mine for storage, that would be loaded out for shipment later.

Unfortunately, the consultant is generally faced with having never seen the project, or preparing for litigation three or more years after blasting was completed. As someone who has enjoyed photography as a hobby for many years, aerial photography to me has always been an exciting way to give a different perspective to my images. Our industry is always in search of new technology for bet­ter and more cost effective methods to improve our trade and aerial photography is a great tool to improve project planning or document its progress. It has typically involved conventional aircraft both fixed wing and helicopters but neither method is always available or cost effective. The lat­est innovation since digital imaging is the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones. But there is a lot of uncertainty with this amazing new technology’s fu­ture in the U.S. as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is under review and development of UAV regulations for commercial use which are slated to be completed in 2015.

Often blast damage litigation involves structural damage which clearly is not blast related. The fact that structures are observed to be damaged when blasting has taken place in the near vicinity of these structures does not necessarily mean that the damage was caused by blasting. If careful blasting and seismograph records were kept by the blaster which decisively indicate damage is not blast related, then other causes of structural damage need to be assessed. These include problematic soil characteristics and long-term changes in climate or subsurface soil moisture. This paper presents the evaluation process required to investigate soil problems leading to damage often attributed to blasting.

Modern commercial blasting is as much a technical process as it is a business one. As with most processes both aspects of blasting are driven by and generate new data. The time-critical nature of commercial blasting in mining and construction projects, dictate the timely exchange of information so as not to impede production or commerce. Up-to-date information about the blast to be undertaken can help suppliers: meet customers’ expectations to address challenging ground conditions; react to a market where quickly changing orders occur regularly; and address as-drilled blast patterns as opposed to baseline plans. “Real-time” data exchange into and out of the blasting process supports the whole-of-mine data management that the industry is migrating to.

Torpedoing Wells. – On the completion of the drilling, or when the production is found to decrease, it is usual to “torpedo” the well to increase the flow. This process was patented in 1862 by Colonel Roberts, who believed, with many others, that the oil was contained in crevices in the rock, which might not have been tapped by the bore-hole. He therefore proposed the use of nitroglycerine, gunpowder, or other explosive, to break up the rock at the bottom of the well, so that these rich “pockets” might be brought into communication with the well.

The quiet banks of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, received a wake-up call July 16 as two smokestacks in the Marina District were leveled with dynamite. B&B Wrecking, Inc. of Cleveland contracted the project with the city to bring down the twin stacks, both measuring over 250 feet tall. The structures were part of the Toledo Edison Steam Plant and were erected nearly a hundred years ago. A week’s worth of preparation went into final planning, drilling and loading holes with over 80 pounds of explosives. The felling went precisely as planned as onlookers cheered as the stacks were reduced to rubble.

The most common method for identifying the potential for blast damage is the peak particle velocity. But this can depend on many factors such as the type of blast, explosive, confinement, timing and the rock mass. The value must then be used to estimate damage. But the amount of damage will depend on the rock mass quality and the excavation size and shape. The amount of damage that can be accepted will depend on the purpose of the excavation. This paper presents a logical, but very approximate, procedure that the mining engineer can follow in order to assess the potential for damage in the control of that blasting.
