One of the dewatering methods in mineral processing plant is filtration system. Disk filters are included the porous surface with pressure drop on both sides, Water in the pulp passes through the surface and solid particles remain as a cake on it. Wet concentrate production of magnetite processing plant at Golgohar Mining and Industrial Company with solid tonnage of 160 ton per hour and 49% solid amount contains 166 m3/h of water. In the present study, in addition to studying disc filter performance, the effective parameters on cake moisture were studied using Vacuum Bottom-Feed Leaf method (in the laboratory scale). Optimization was performed using the Taguchi method. The results showed that the cake moisture is reduced by increasing particle size and solid percentage (because of specific resistivity reduction), while the rate of cake formation and its thickness are increased. Also, it was found that by increasing pressure, the cake moisture is reduced and cake formation rate and its thickness are increased. In this study, the effect of fabric texture was also examined. Lowest cake moisture was obtained in condition of using compressed plain fabric with mono-multi filament fibres, pressure at 75kPa, solid percentage of 65 to 70, particle size (D80) equivalent to 123µm and disk rotation speed of 1.25 rpm.

Gravity-fed three-product dense medium cyclone(GTDMC)is usually used as the main coal washing equipment in coking coal preparation plant. It can produce three products with a low density suspension at the same time. Raw coal and dense medium are fed separately into the cyclone. Only the qualified low-density medium suspension is pumped into the cyclone while the raw coal is fed into the first-stage 1200mm cyclone axially at the top end by gravity. The 1200mm cyclone with a cylindrical form is for low-density separation. The clean coal with light density and slower-settling velocity moves directly towards the low pressure zone along the axis and is carried through the vortex-finder to the overflow. Only the heavy products pass through the "separating zones" to the wall of 1200mm cyclone and then migrate into the series-connected second-stage 850mm cyclone through the tangential outlet. The medium suspension from the first-stage cyclone is thickened and contains more magnetite coarse particles. The second-stage cyclone typically consists of a cylindrical section and conical part. These are all favorable for the second-stage cyclone to separate at a high density. Production practices show that the clean coal and the gangue rarely mixed in the middling, the lower limit of the separation is 0.2 mm, the Organic Efficiency and the Ecart probable of the first stage is 98.30% and 0.026 kg/L respectively.

Recent increase in steel demand has led to the increased usage of high grade iron ores. During the mining, crushing and washing of ore, huge quantities of fines and slimes (<150 µm) are generated, majority of which is dumped into tailing ponds owing to their high alumina contents (~10-15%). Due to rapid depletion of high grade iron ore, it is the need of the hour to utilize low grade iron ore fines and slimes. These fines and slimes contain high iron values assaying 45-60% Fe. Dumping these valuable resources in ponds locks enormous land space and causes environmental hazards. The constituent minerals present in Indian iron ores comprise of hematite, goethite, gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Our research is focused on beneficiation of iron ore slimes through selective flocculation. We use density functional theory simulations to screen the reagents and perform experiments with screened reagents to determine the experimental conditions for effective performance of the reagents. Our studies revealed that reagents like starch, guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose exhibit excellent selectivity in high alkaline pH range. However, the higher cost of alkali makes the process economically less attractive. In the present study, a commercial reagent from NALCO Water (Hi-Tex 83570) has been explored as selective flocculant for beneficiation of iron ore slimes in wide pH range (4-11). However, the reagent was also found to be the most selective in alkaline pH range only. Full factorial design of experiments was done considering three parameters namely, pulp density, flocculant dosage and settling time. Regression models were developed for yield, iron grade, alumina grade and iron recovery in the concentrate, using experimental results. Further parameter optimization was done to achieve high Fe recoveries and low alumina recoveries. The optimal parameters thus arrived at were validated with the experiments. We were able to achieve a concentrate grade of 60.0% Fe and 5.1% Al2O3 with 68.8% Fe recovery from a feed containing of 53.1% Fe and 8.9% Al2O3. The performance of flocculant Hi-Tex 83570 was also compared with reagents starch and guar gum.

"At present, research on the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is very scanty, which restricts the research progress of uranium ore flotation process research. The research aimed at exploring the surface characteristics of two common uranium minerals and providing basis for flotation process to enrich uranium minerals in ore. This paper selected pitchblende and uraninite as the object of study, which are widely distributed in uranium deposits. We chose out the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite from different ores collected from different uranium deposits. By means of Zeta potential test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test, a preliminary study on surface characteristics of the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite was conducted. And the significance of the change of Zeta potential, the elements composition and valence state on the minerals surface for flotation was discussed. The research shows that, the Zeta potentials of pitchblende and uraninite in pure water are negative mainly when the pH value varies from 2 to 11, which maybe a result of the difference of ionization capacity between two kinds of oxy-compounds on the surface of minerals. On the surface of pitchblende and uraninite, the metal elements are mainly U, Th and Pb. U is mainly in the form of UO2, Th is mainly in the form of ThO2, and Pb is mainly in the form of Pb and PbO. Based on the surface characteristics of pitchblende and uraninite, we can select process and reagents appropriately in uranium ore flotation.INTRODUCTION Globally, the major challenges associated with exploitation of low grade ores are about finding economically feasible processes for reducing the mass of gangue minerals (Filippov et al., 2012). Data from autogenous and semi-autogenous tests in a 1.67m diameter mill have been analysed in terms of a new model for rock abrasion. This model defines specific rate as the rate of production of fines (material less than 13mm) per unit mass of rock, where the term “rock” is applied to all ore pieces of ore coarser than the grate size. In most cases, an allowance for preliminary rounding and cleavage was made. A method has been developed to analyse steady-state data, using piecewise fitting to the cumulative size distributions. The model was compared to the well-established models, which are based on the population balance method. The specific rate increased for all rock sizes as the volume of 100mm balls in the mill was increased. Tests using a coarser feed and smaller balls provided further evidence that once rocks are rounded, abrasion is due to localised surface damage, caused by impacts, rather than rotational shear. An allowance for rapid rounding of jagged rocks, followed by less rapid abrasion of rounded pebbles was also tested, but the analysis was not conclusive. The average specific rate is a useful measure of the capacity of a primary mill. The effect of power intensity (kW/t of ore) was also investigated as a means of extrapolating the pilot-plant data to large production mills.

The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

In India around 15-20% of Run of Mine (ROM) from any iron ore deposit reports to slime dams as byproduct of iron ore beneficiation process. The proportion of iron ore slime to ROM will increase in future with higher proportion of lean grade ores in ROM. Furthermore, tonnages of iron ore slime will also increase with increasing demand of iron concentrate. Presently, this slime is stored in the dam in the absence of beneficiation technology. A beneficiation flowsheet has been developed at Tata Steel. This process produced concentrate of 2.2% alumina with 40 % yield from slime of 7-9% alumina. The iron content in the reject will be less than 40% thus adhering to the regulatory norm. Pilot scale study show waste from slime beneficiation is a good raw material for making a variety of building materials. Waste from slime beneficiation also has soil amendment properties. Pilot scale studies show productivity of rice increased when the waste of slime beneficiation process is mixed with soil. On commercialization of this zero waste technology slime generated from the iron ore washing plant will be completely used. In this paper the result of the pilot scale studies on slime beneficiation and utilization processes towards soil making and making of building materials are discussed in detail.

We have developed a classification of geochemical barriers according to their origin, i.e. natural and artificial, and according to methods and areas of application. There has been an examination of the interaction between different classes of geochemical barriers with sulfate solutions containing nickel, copper and iron. As natural barriers, carbonates (calcite and dolomites) were used. For artificial barriers, a mixture of serpentine and carbonatite, thermo-activated copper-nickel dressing tailings, and a magnesium-containing sorbent based on brucite was used. Pyrometallurgical reactors constitute a key processing component in the total primary and industrial/recycling resource cycle, being involved both in primary smelting, converting and extraction, as well as the reprocessing of scrap, from aluminium cans to end-of-life automobiles. Therefore the pyrometallurgical reactor?s role in achieving sustainability is the central theme discussed in this paper since optimising their operation minimises waste, residue and offgas (NOx, dioxin, CO2) and maximises product quality and therefore efficiency. To effectively control the overall resource cycle, one needs to take a systems modelling approach of the whole cycle, seeking to also understand the dynamic process behaviour of the individual components of the cycle, and then especially the part that contributes most to the chemical conversion, namely the pyrometallurgical reactor. This paper highlights the role of pyrometallurgical thermodynamics in the whole resource cycle and specifically places equilibrium thermochemistry in the context of process dynamics where large, variable inventories are recycled or maintained within the system. This paper will therefore review the semi-empirical dynamic modelling tools, which are used to model complex systems with the specific goal of developing dynamic predictive models, which also include slag-alloy chemistry, towards controlling the recycling in a feed forward manner. To illustrate the primary production of metals, high carbon ferrochrome and Ni-Cu-matte smelting will be presented as a brief case study. Also fundamental studies in blast furnace and waste incineration kilns will be given. It also will show how the distributed nature of the chemistry of melts in the case of primary extraction, and industrial (recycling) materials such as recycled end-of-life vehicles, have a significant impact on the process outcomes and model predictions. It is therefore argued that the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics in metallurgical reactors play a final crucial role in modelling the closed material cycle, but only when it is used in conjunction with process systems theory based on reconciled data for parameter estimation and model calibration. System models for aluminium and car recycling will be given as well as a dynamical system model that describes the interconnected material flows for Ag, Au, Bi, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, PGM, Sn and Zn for a study on lead-free solder.

Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

"Coal-water mixtures (CWM) of concentrated fine coal may be transported in pipelines but this is influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. The objectives of this study are to investigate the importance of surface charge, solids concentration and dispersant addition on the rheology and stability of a fine Witbank coal-water mixture (<75 m). Zeta potential, rheology and stability were measured with a Malvern Zetasizer, a AR1500EA rheometer and a static rod penetration test, respectively. Sendep 30D, Sendep 30F and Norilose 8058, all supplied by Senmin International, were used as dispersants, at dosages of between 0.1 to 0.5% dry coal (w/w). Solids concentration was varied from 10 to 58% (w/w). The zeta potential was found to be positive at low pH and decreased sharply with increasing pH to a minimum of -50 mV at pH 10. The zeta potential decreased with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest zeta potential of -63 mV was obtained for Norilose 8058 at a dosage of 0.3%. CWM rheology was Newtonian at lower solids concentrations but became non-Newtonian at solids concentrations over 40% (w/w), with an initial yield stress and pseudo plastic behavior. The yield stress decreased sharply with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest yield stress was obtained for Norilose 8058. The addition of dispersants resulted in significant improvements in stability. A penetration ratio of over 70% was obtained for Norilose 8058 after 10 days. In summary, the addition of dispersants resulted in a decrease in the zeta potential which increased the electrostatic repulsive forces between particles, thus improving both CWM rheology and static stability.INTRODUCTION Coal Water Mixtures South Africa’s energy economy depends heavily on coal. It accounts for about 70% of primary energy consumption, 93% of electricity generation and 30% of liquid petroleum fuels (Eberhard, 2011). The transportation of coal to export markets and power generation stations is a problem in the South African coal industry due to ageing and inefficient rail infrastructure. This problem is intensified by the long distance of coal haulage, delays in the time required to load and unload wagons, and environmental challenges related to air pollution and water contamination. Fine coal may be transported more efficiently and economically in a pipeline as a highly concentrated coal water mixture (CWM). Typically a fine coal CWM will contain 60-75% coal, 25-40% water and nearly 1% of dispersing additives (Atesok et al., 2005; Dincer et al., 2003). However, the transport of CWMs in pipelines is strongly influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. These quantities are affected by the coal composition/mineralogy, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape, inter-particle forces and dispersant type and dosage (Laskowski, 2001)."

The present work aimed to verify the possibility of using froth flotation to separate the constitu-ent minerals of an alaskite rock waste having as the main minerals quartz and feldspar. Three stages of tests have been carried through. In the first stage was used an amphoteric collector for flotation, diaminedioleate, at pH 2 and, after analyzing the final products, a very poor selectivity was ob-served. During the second stage of tests, different collectors that are normally used for feldspar flo-tation as amines, sulfonates and soybean oil were employed. Once more, it was not possible to reach reasonably selective results. In the third stage, a salt of etheramine was used for collecting the feldspar and hydrofluoric acid was utilized for controlling the pH. A simulation of three flotation steps (rougher, cleaner and recleaner) permitted to attain a good selectivity in the flotation process. A concentrate with a silica content of 96.6% was obtained. The low concentrate content of alkalis totalizing 0.52% and a feldspar recovery of 96.5% to the tailings, represented by the high content of Na, K, and Al2O3 in the tailings, demonstrated that the concentrate was made up mostly of quartz.

"The mechanism whereby thiol collectors adsorb onto a mineral surface has been widely studied. Most of these studies examine the mineral surface at equilibrium state and, often, well above monolayer coverage. However, the formation of species at the mineral surface is a complex process that is both kinetically and thermodynamically controlled. In a typical industrial application, the dosage of collector will be around monolayer level. This study uses isothermal titration microcalorimetry to measure the heat evolved during the reaction of sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) and sodium isobutyl dithiocarbamate (SIBDTC) and their mixtures with galena and chalcopyrite. The sensitivity of the instrument allows heats of reaction of sub-monolayer quantities of thiol collector to be measured.The study found that both the magnitude and kinetics of the reaction between a collector and a mineral surface was dependent on the type of mineral and the type of collector. Proposals are made for the reactions based on literature and the evidence from this investigation. It was found that when collectors were reacted with mixtures of galena and chalcopyrite, that the magnitude of the reaction was lower compared to that measured for the pure minerals alone. This may be due to galvanic interactions between the minerals, resulting in a passivating effect on one or both of the minerals."

"The Upper Group 2 (UG2) reef in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa hosts an estimated 40% of the world’s Platinum Group Metal (PGM) resources. The processing of this ore via flotation poses two particular challenges: limiting the levels of chromite in the concentrate to reduce downstream smelting problems, and enhancing the recovery of ultrafine (typically -10 micron), liberated PGMs. Conventional ways of suppressing the entrained chromite, such as froth washing, is not effective in PGM operations, which are dominated by mechanical cells. The recovery of fine particles is hampered by low collision efficiencies with air bubbles, as well as oxidised surface layers especially in tailings operations. This paper documents the results of laboratory tests on a run-of-mine PGM UG2 ore, investigating the application of a pneumo-mechanical column (PMC) and its effect on PGM flotation and its selectivity with regard to chromite. A key feature of the device is the stage-wise release of aerated slurry from an agitated downcomer, thus creating conditions where the superficial velocity profiles of air and slurry change axially within the separation zone. This aids segregation of the silicates and chromite-rich fractions in the separation zone, concentrating the latter towards the bottom of the column and minimising its entrainment into the concentrate. Comparison of the performance of the PMC to that of mechanical laboratory cells under equivalent operating conditions showed improved PGM flotation kinetics and recovery. This was accompanied by a decrease in gangue recovery compared to the mechanical cells by more than 40%, thus doubling the final rougher concentrate grade from 50 to 100 g/t. Significantly, whilst the overall Cr2O3 recovery was reduced by more than 60%, the selectivity (PGM recovery vs Cr2O3 grade in the concentrate) was doubled.INTRODUCTIONThe Bushveld complex in the northern part of South Africa hosts the world’s largest reserves of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), representing approximately 40% of the total PGE. It is characterised by three main PGM bearing reefs, namely Merensky, Upper Group 2 (UG2) and the Platreef. The Merensky and Platreef are dominated by silicates in the form of pyroxenites, and carry economically recoverable amounts of copper and nickel, in the form of chalcopyrite and pentlandite. The UG2 on the other hand is a chromitite ore with chromite as (ideally, FeO.Cr2O3) the most abundant gangue, often constituting more than 70% by mass with a PGM grade of around 4.5 g/t. Other key gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar and talc. The PGEs occur in a wide variety of minerals, with platinum and palladium sulphides typically accounting for about half of the total. Base metal sulphides such as chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite occur in only very minor amounts, accounting mostly for less than 0.1% by mass."

The slag was attempted to be converted into the adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution using the alkali fusion method. The slag was mixed with NaOH powder (NaOH / Slag = 1.6), and then the mixture was heated at 600 ? for 6 h to prepare the precursor. The precursor was stirred at room temperature in distilled water to synthesize the adsorbent, and the removal ability of the obtained adsorbent for phosphate from aqueous solution was investigated. The products, including hydrocalumite and calcite, were synthesized, and the removal efficiencies of the adsorbent for F- and PO43- showed higher than those of raw BF slag, especially removal of PO43- are excellent (99 %), while the removal of Cl- , SO42-, NO3- and Br- was minor. The adsorbent could remove PO43- selectively in the co-existing solution of Cl-, NO3-, F-, SO42- and Br-.The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- was extrapolated using Langmuir and Freundlich models, and experimental data are found to fit Langmuir than Freundlich. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- is higher than other adsorbent reported previously. The high affinity of the adsorbent for PO43- in aqueous solution was caused by the formation of hydroxyapatite [Ca5(PO4)3(OH)] and brushite [CaHPO4?2H2O]. Structural impurities in the crystal lattice of rock phosphate of Indian origin is a great challenge for beneficiation and practically possesses remote scope of upgradation to the desired level for industrial utilization. There is a wide occurrence of rock phosphate in different parts of India with different characteristics viz. siliceous, carbonaceous and ferruginous. The structural cationic replacement in the composition of apatite is due to the exchangeable cations present in the external impurities associated with the rock phosphate ore. The Indian rock phosphate ore from Purulia district, West Bengal is characterized as unusual structural composition due to the exchangeable cation in its composition. The elemental distribution of ore exhibits the disproportionate ratio of P2O5 and CaO which is 5.88: 3.31 in reference to the theoretical composition of P2O5: CaO in apatite which is 4.23: 5.55. The substitution by trivalent Al+++ cations within the structure of apatite in place of divalent Ca++ is found upto 18% and substitution of exchangeable cation in place of PO4 and F ion by CO3/SO4 is found upto 0.1% and OH ions upto 0.2% respectively in a lattice of apatite thereby diluting the grade of rock phosphate and restricting its industrial use even after beneficiation. This paper reveals the unusual compositional features of rock phosphate under study and is a guideline to the mineral industries using such rock phosphate. Ferrihydrite, a member of iron oxides family, has been used as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater. The success of the operation depends mainly on the efficient removal of ferrihydrite from the aqueous phase. Hence, the emphasis of this study was given on the separation of ferrihydrite by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) method to overcome solid-liquid separation difficulties of ferrihydrite. Magnetic seeding technique in which the magnetite mineral was chosen as a seeding reagent was used to make magnetic separation available. The method clearly involves the attachment of ferrihydrite to a magnetic seed material and subsequent magnetic separation of ferrihydrite ? magnetite coagulates. Seeding of ferrihydrite with magnetic particles was achieved by exceeding the solubility limit of the ions in the presence of dispersed magnetite. Magnetic separation results of seeded ferrihydrite showed that maximum seeding performance is obtained in the pH range of 7.0~10.0. Iron/magnetite ratio had a marked effect on the separation of seeded iron oxide precipitate by HGMS. This ratio determines the operation parameters such as magnetic field strength and flow rate. It was concluded that when used with magnetic seeding technique, HGMS can be used to surpass separation difficulties of ferrihydrite used in adsorption-based treatment techniques.

"The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold and silver extraction technology from refractory gold sulphide flotation concentrate of one deposits of Nord-East of Russia. The concentrate is due to the complex mineral composition. Gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals (arsenopyrite and pyrite partially oxidized by 7-11%). These are characterized by high content of silver 219 g/t and sulphide sulfur 32%, the presence of poorly soluble silver minerals (silver sulfosalts, fahlore, finely dispersed hypergenic acanthite in iron hydroxides and jarosite, etc.), and impurity minerals capable of interacting with cyanide (pyrrhotite, marcasite, nonferrous sulphides) and causing higher than normal cyanide consumption. Pretreatment of refractory sulphide concentrate by biooxidation using a mixed association of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria at a temperature of 36-40 °C for 120 hours oxidized arsenopyrite by 97.5%, pyrite by 93.5%, unlocked refractory gold, and generally oxidized the minerals absorbing cyanide and oxygen before cyanidation. Further oxidation of these minerals-absorbents was facilitated by the aeration in calcareous medium of the solid biooxidation residues of the concentrate. Sorption cyanidation of the solid biooxidation residues with addition of lead (II) of recovered 91.2% of gold and 82.9% silver from biooxidation residue, compared with 80.1% and 46.6%, respectively, for sorption cyanidation without the preceding biooxidation step. Biooxidation of the concentrate prior to cyanidation improves the recovery of precious metals, especially silver, and significantly reduces cyanide consumption from 18.7 kg/t to 3-5 kg/t of concentrate. INTRODUCTION Biooxidation of gold sulphide concentrates using acidophilic microorganisms has been successfully applied worldwide (van Aswegen et al., 2007; Gericke et al., 2009; Sovmen et al., 2007; Sovmen et al., 2009). At least 15 full-scale plants for tank biooxidation of sulphide concentrates are presently in operation, and the construction of new ones is planned (Bulaev et al, 2015)."

This study examines the surface alteration and flotation behaviour of synthetic moncheite, PtPd(BiTe)2, in the presence of pentlandite. The telluride minerals contribute around 20% ~ 30% and up to 45% of the PGM present in the Platreef ore and are considered to be slow floating as there is evidence of these minerals reporting to the tailings. It was proposed that oxidation products from other minerals and grinding media would affect the mineral surface composition and floatability thereby causing inadvertent depression of moncheite due to precipitating ions. ToF-SIMS analyses (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to characterise the mineral surface as well as the extent of surface alteration. Microflotation was used to deter-mine the hydrophobicity of the synthetic minerals. Conditioning of moncheite in the presence of pentlandite reduced the flotation response of the + 38 -106µm size fraction from > 99% to 56%. This was due to pentlandite dissolution products (iron and nickel hydroxy species) which formed overlayers on the mineral surfaces thereby inhibiting the adsorption of collector. In addition, further grinding of these samples, with and without pentlandite conditioning showed a negative effect on recovery due to the fineness of the particle size distribution and there was no advantage gained from any possible exposure of fresh sites in the sample.
