"Most of VictoriaÆs rivers and aquifers are already fully allocated or reaching full allocation. In regions without a well-established water market, access to water entitlements to facilitate new development is limited. In areas with established water markets, mine developers face an undue cost burden in circumstances where they are only planning to consume a fraction of the water entitlements that they purchase. The challenge for water managers is to ensure protection of water resources and other water users without creating an unnecessary disincentive for those types of developments that return most of the water that they take from water sources. The opportunity for development of a mine is explicitly linked to a particular location and must be developed where a resource is located or it cannot be exploited at all. Regulatory arrangements that facilitate development may have a positive impact on economic development, particularly where water availability is a potentially limiting factor. Net volume licensing has the potential to allow increased economic outcomes through improved licensing of access to water. Net volume licensing differs from traditional water licensing in that it authorises access to water on the basis of ænet useÆ rather than æthe gross volume takenÆ. This paper asks under what conditions net volume licensing is likely to be feasible and effective. In particular, the paper examines the information and accuracy requirements to allow net volume licensing decisions to be made. This work is based around five case studies in Victoria that were used to examine the potential for net volume licensing for mines and quarries. Assessing a potential net volume licensing arrangement requires the regulating authority to have an understanding of the inputs and outputs of water to a site. In contrast, assessment of take and use licences consider only a single input. It was concluded that the conditions that lend themselves to net volume licensing include: well understood water inputs and outputs, including appropriate accuracy of information where the location of site water inputs and outputs are the same where the timing of extraction and discharge can be managed to minimise impact on the water resource.A key remaining challenge is establishing an accounting framework that allows net volume licensing under current water resource limits. Geological uncertainty is reduced by improved understanding of the relationship between regional-scale geological basement features (structure, composition, depth) and known local structural risk (such as recognised structural hazards at the mine). Coal mining and exploration entities can be more efficient and effective in managing geological risk at a range of scales. A more efficient and effective performance in forward interpreting and managing geological risk will result in a more efficient and effective exploration and also incremental or even significant mining cost improvements. In order to improve the understanding of basement features, a new 4D regional structural/basin framework for the Sydney Basin and the eastern part of the Gunnedah Basin has been constructed to provide primarily coal exploration and mining with a more integrated geological framework for ongoing subregional to mine-scale geological risk based studies. The model has been developed from a range of available regional geophysical and geological datasets, of variable detail and reliability, which have been brought together to generate a more robust structural and tectonic model than could be generated with any one single dataset. An initial regional structural model for the Sydney Basin was constructed in 2003 and an update to the model was released in 2005 (SRK Consulting, 2003; 2005). The development and ongoing refinement of the model was undertaken with financial and data support from a number of coal mining industry, gas exploration and government organisations. Prior to, and following the development of the regional structural/basin model and associated Information Base, a number of more area-specific studies have been completed, using the æbasement upÆ assessment approach. The methodology for developing comprehensive structural models, from the basement up, is outlined. The approach can be applied at a country-wide, regional or lease area scale. Case examples of where this approach has been used as an effective and efficient method in improving geological certainty and as a predictive tool to help manage geological risk are also presented.

The Western Mining site at Olympic Dam, near the community of Roxby Downs in South Australia is one of the largest orebodies of its type in the world. It contains known reserves of over 10.6 M tonne of copper, with economic secondary metals including uranium, silver and gold. In 1996, an expansion project was commenced to increase mine production approximately threefold, to produce 200 000 tonnes pa of copper, 4600 kg pa of uranium oxide, 3600 kg pa of gold and 50 000 kg pa of silver. This expansion included both underground mining and surface processing investment. Because of the scale of operations, it was decided that ore should be transported underground by a railway system. In July 1997, ALSTOM Automation and Control Limited (then Cegelec Australia Limited), was awarded the contract to deliver a control system to manage and automate the rail haulage system for Western MiningÆs Olympic Dam Mine, as part of this major upgrade and extension project. This paper explains the overall design and the approach taken to implement route selection, route locking, train interlocking and track topology using normal industrial control equipment such as Programmable Logic Controllers. Included is a discussion of how this automation has improved the productivity of the haulage system by more than 15 per cent.

The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

Scientific knowledge of Mars’ surface morphology and internal geological structure has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander. Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults are existed and formed regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. We focus on the linear relationship between the fault spacing and the thickness of the mechanical layer as an approach to studying the internal structure from satellite images. Mechanical layer is a layer that composes of the same mechanical properties and is mainly bounded by lithology (Narr, 1991; Gross, 1993). The linear relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the joint spacing has been studied and its slope is called the Fracture-Spacing Index (FSI) (Narr and Suppe, 1991). Soliva, Benedicto and Maerten (2006) showed that the stress drop zone (stress shadow) due to the fault activities affects the fault spacing. Figure 1 shows the approach used to estimate the thickness of the mechanical layer from the fault spacing on Mars. This paper aims to better understand the internal mechanical structure of Mars estimated by the geometrical pattern of faults on the Martian surface. We report the initial studies of this work. The lab-scale physical experiments and numerical experiments were presented to demonstrate the relationship between the thickness of the mechanical layer and the geometric pattern of fractures

Nifty Copper Operations was established to treat a copper orebody situated in the East Pilbara area of North West WA, located approximately 70 km west of Telfer in the Great Sandy Desert. The plant was designed to treat the oxidised portion of the orebody with underground development following at a later date. Nifty was designed to produce 16 500 tpa of copper cathode. This will increase with treatment of the chalcopyrite ore (underground resource). Ore processing is similar to other operations of this type but has its unique challenges. Problems discussed are: fine clay minerals which hinder percolation; oxidation of organic by manganese in the electrolyte; crud formation by clays; third phase emulsions; and organic carryover into the electrowinning tankhouse. As the orebody utilisation progresses, some sulphide material will require leaching and further investigations into liquor chemistry.

A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. The Selective Precipitation (Basics) Process is a means of controlling impurities such as the ions of Mn, Mg, and Cl as well as sulphate and water, in an electrolytic zinc plant circuit. This is achieved by precipita- ting zinc selectively as a basic zinc sulphate from a portion of impure circuit solution. The impurities remain in the solution, which can be discarded, while the zinc, substantially free of impurities, is returned to the main circuit by using the precipitate as a neutral- ising reagent. A description of the process and its development to a full scale operating plant at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited is Presented.

Gaining confidence in interpreting rock and strata properties of the coalmine roof is necessary for design, maintenance, modelling and optimisation of roadways supports. One of the key causes of roadway instabilities experienced in underground coalmines is an extreme variable nature (thickness, competence, discontinuities etc) of the coalmine roof. Normally, the thickness and strength of the roof are characterised with the geotechnical and geological data gathered from exploration boreholes, which are drilled often at considerable distances apart. This limited data cannot capture localised geological variations in the coalmine roof. With this background, this paper explores feasibility of using measurement while drilling concept to perform geotechnical characterisation of the coalmine roof. The parameters, for example, penetration rate, rotary speed, torque, sound, vibration, obtained during the drilling process can provide valuable insights into geotechnical properties. The paper describes the progress of the experimental work conducted at the laboratory on synthesized concrete samples representing various rock strata using a field-scale drilling machine. The samples with and without interfaces have been tested to replicate various underground roof strata. The signals returned from the drill machine, as the drill bit passes through the layers, have been analysed and interpreted to characterise whether the drill response data can differentiate various strengths associated with the rock layers. The initial laboratory results are promising as they show distinct responses of the various sample blocks in a controlled environment. The drilling data can differentiate the synthesized rock samples and detect ‘signatures’ of the roof strength variability and delineation of lithological interfaces (transitions). The weight and torque on the bit vary and show dependency on the strength of the blocks.

Copper-gold-pyrite ore types with an elevated pyrite head grade utilise a sequential flotation circuit to recover initially a copper-gold concentrate with a pyrite-gold concentrate being produced from the tailing of the initial circuit.A simpler flotation circuit with lower operating and capital costs for treatment of such copper-gold-pyrite ores with an elevated pyrite head assay was sought in the described work. After characterising the ore, the objective was to apply bulk rougher flotation of both the copper minerals and pyrite for the copper-gold-pyrite ore at natural pH. Hence, no lime or other pyrite depressants were required in bulk roughing. The bulk rougher concentrate was upgraded in a cleaner circuit to reject non-sulfide gangue and then the resulting sulfide concentrate was separated by depressing the pyrite to produce two products (copper and pyrite concentrates, both having significant gold assays). A standard test with a sequential circuit was applied to the same ore for comparison.The chalcopyrite and pyrite losses in the tailing from the rougher circuit were the same for both bulk and sequential roughing (less than six per cent). In cleaning (bulk circuit), the effective pH for pyrite depression was 11.8–11.9; copper recovery was 70–75 per cent (grade of 15–20 per cent copper) and the sulfur recovery (pyrite product) was 80–85 per cent (grade of 34–36 per cent sulfur).These results approached those for the sequential circuit where copper recovery was 80–85 per cent (grade of 15–20 per cent copper) and the sulfur recovery (pyrite product) was 83 per cent (grade of 38 per cent sulfur).The observed effects of feed sizing on the liberation of minerals in the rougher feed are discussed. Options for improving the bulk circuit results are also considered. The curbing of expansion in tertiary level education in Australia and the question- ing of its objectives which are now occurring are likely to have important effects on mining and metallurgical education. Student enrol- ments are low but the serious shortage of specialised minerals industry graduates pre- dicted during the boom of the late 60's has not eventuated. Other manning problems of a less quantitative but possibly equally import- ant kind have been identified. They point to a need for a full and deep review of the education and training programmes available to Australian graduates planning to enter product- ion areas of the minerals industry. An alter- native educational structure providing greater flexibility is suggested.

The prediction of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) from mine waste materials is critically important during all stages of the mine value chain. However, to determine such geoenvironmental characteristics static and kinetic testing of individual waste units must be performed on representative samples. The importance of sample selection cannot be underestimated; it is the single most critical aspect of any geoenvironmental investigation. Poor sampling techniques and inadequate sample selection will contribute to excessive variance, difficulties in interpretation and incorrect assessment. By undertaking mesotextural characterisation based on hyperspectral mineralogical data (with sulfur assay data if available), opportunities to improve sampling strategies are presented. Such data will inform the selection of samples for low-cost total sulfur, paste pH and geoenvironmental logging, which collectively will allow for accurate AMD forecasting and improved sampling practices to be achieved. Once sampled, robust quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) protocols must be developed where the use of international certified reference standards become obligatory. This is currently not practised, resulting in inter-laboratory discrepancies when undertaking waste classification. Further improvements in geoenvironmental characterisation testing lies in the adoption of blended static testing protocols, whereby blends of waste materials can be efficiently tested so as to give an early forecast as to whether they will produce acidic or metal-laden drainage. Such information is integral in developing a waste schedule that will allow for a non-acid forming waste landform to be constructed right from the start of the operational phase. Ultimately, improvements in this discipline lie in technological innovations with regards to mineralogical characterisation, and by offering geoscience and minerals engineering students a competent education in the discipline. Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. The effect of temperature, time and SO2 concentration in the atmosphate have been studied for a complex Pb-Zn concentrate, which contained four sulphides and some organic material, in order to determine optimum roasting conditions. Under static roasting conditions virtually complete sulphation was achieved after roasting at 650¦C.2 hours in 10% SO2 in air. Both zinc ferrite and zinc silicate were observed to form early in the roasting, but continued exposure to SO2 -containing gases caused decomposition of these as the roasting time increased. Water and acid solubilities of iron, silica, calcium, magnesium and aluminium in the calcine were determined, as a function of roasting time, temperature and atmosphere composition.

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

Recently, the Environmental Engineering Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa Research Organization has made signifi- cant progress in the development of more accurate algorithms for assessing heat flow in gold mines. These algorithms have been incor- porated into an overall computer program, ENVIRON, which enables the complete thermo- dynamic analyses of mine ventilation and cool- ing systems to be carried out. Recently, efforts have concentrated on the development of an expert computer system which will guide engineers in the process of selecting the most appropriate environmental control strategy.

Experience has shown that the E-Type multiple indicator kriging (MIK) estimation technique often works well for resource estimation in stockwork mineralisation that contains a mixture of high and low-grade mineralisation types that are difficult or impossible to separate spatially. E-Type MIK, like ordinary kriging (OK) is a smoothing estimator and where data is sparse can result in estimates of grade tonnage curves that do not reflect the true block variability at selective mining unit (SMU) scale. The rank and replace (RR) estimation methodology is designed to reproduce both local block accuracy and true block variability at SMU scale and has shown good results when used with highly skewed unimodal diffusive style mineralisation. This paper examines the use of RR with mosaic style mineralisation typically found in stockworks via a case study using real data from Newcrest’s Telfer West Dome deposit. Resource level estimation results for ordinary kriging (OK), E-Type MIK and RR are compared to close spaced grade control models as the reference reality.Results show that stationarity requirements and declustering can severely impact on the usefulness of the rank and replace technique and that it should only be used where trends are not too strong and data are relatively uniformly spaced. This does not rule out its application to stockwork or mosaic style deposits. However, in this case, the presence of trends and different data densities requires the non-stationary domain to be further broken down into sub domains for the RR technique to be effective.CITATION:Kentwell, D and Finn, D, 2017. The interaction of flotation collectors with sulphide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.
