Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.

The wedge shape theory of the rock fragmentation range in bench blasting is presented according to the dynamic characteristics of rock fragmentation by blasting in open pit under the condition of hole-by-hole initiation. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to analyse the rock fragmentation mechanism. The rock mass stress contours, crack propagation and damage evolution of different moments were obtained. The results showed that the wedge shape theory of blasting is closer to the rock fragmentation in hole-by-hole blasting and is useful to the design and calculation of charge weight.CITATION:Yang, J, Chen, Z-Y, Yu, Q and Ren, G, 2015. Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

Modelling of the Sala Agitated Mill (SAM) using a simplified solution to the population balance approach has been carried out. The rate of breakage is modified by the mill power, providing predictions of the resulting product size distribution for different grinding conditions and mill sizes. The power of the mill is estimated by a physically derived function, using an assumption that the mill power consumption mainly arises from the ball to ball friction within the mill. The grinding efficiency, depending on the media ball size and pulp density is approximated in the model. Experimental work on grinding a complex sulphide ore using a pilot scale SAM 7.5 has been carried out. Good agreement has been found between the data from the test campaign and the simulated values. The model has also been validated with experimental data from a pilot grinding of calcium carbonate and from an industrial mill. The model is included in the USIM PAC simulation software.

The large, massive low grade gold orebody at Mount Charlotte has demanded an innovative approach to mining engineering. In the last five years several advances occurred in the areas of rock mechanics, mass blasting, blasthole drilling and truck haulage.Successive crown pillar failures throughout the life of the mine had resulted in a continuous geotechnical program, mostly utilisingconsultants. The culmination of this workwas the development of a successful crown pillar support system. Several stopes have incorporated the technique and the most notable success has been the relatively large F3 crown pillar.In hole hammer drilling was introduced to the mine in 1979, but little work had been done to develop a blasting system to suit the 165mm diameter holes. A non-electric sequential blasting system was adapted for use at themine and up to 600,000 tonnes have been fired successfully in an individual blast. Problems with ground vibration were addressed although this work remains incomplete.

The elements of consistent structural de sign models for underground structures are explained. Such models should comprise at least ground properties, excavation and support methods, computational models for analysis, failure hypotheses, and in-situ monitoring. The fundamental characteristics of the interaction between ground and support are investigated. Then, plane strain models for soft ground tun- nelling and design models for rock tunnelling employing stress release at the tunnel face are elaborated. Some numerical evaluations are gi- ven in diagrams, comparing approaches of dif- ferent authors. Comments are presented on nume- rical three-dimensional models (visualized by structural models for mining in rock salt), on the interaction of in-situ monitoring and design, on structural safety for underground structures, and finally on the general develop- ment of structural design models in geo- Techniques.

In the Bayer process, bauxite is leached with caustic soda, forming a solution of sodium aluminate, from which hydrated alumina is precipitated. The efficient operation of the continuous form of this process requires that the concentration of caustic soda be controlled. A computer simulation of the concentration of caustic soda has been conducted to provide information, regarding the dynamic behaviour of caustic concentration, which is not available from normal plant data. The basis of the simulation is a state- space model of an alumina refinery, linearized about the normal operating condition. The formulation of the model, with the relevant approximations and assumptions, is outlined. The simulation of the mudwash section of the. plant is described in detail. A continuous model of the mudwash, having time-varying coefficients, was driven using operating data from an alumina refinery. The modelled response showed reasonable agreement with the recorded plant response.

A significant part of the reserves of the Southern Coalfield lie beneath major water storages and their impounding dam structures. One of the functions of the NSW Government's Dams Safety Committee is to specify the particular mine layouts which can be used beneath the stored waters according to certain guidelines. A study was made of examples of the two different methods of extraction used under the stored waters as proposed by the mining company according to the guidelines and approved by the Dams Safety Committee. Using both pillar monitoring and mathematical modelling approaches it was shown that the recovery of coal from these layouts could be improved while still ensuring the long term stability of both the underground support pillars and the body of the strata. The integrity of the water storages and their impounding structures would therefore not be Affected.

Underground mining of the ore below the West Lyell open cut commenced in 1972 with the 10 Series stopes above rail haulage level. The third lift of stoping (30 Series) com- menced this year, and access to the 40 Series stopes is being developed. The method uses transverse open stopes with subsequent mass blasting of the rib and crown pillars and consequently there is sub- sidence and caving of the old open cut area above.

Gold was mined from quartz bodies at Ballarat East from the 1850s until closure of the last mine in 1917. The average depth of mines was about 350 m.Ballarat Goldfields Limited (BGL) carried out diamond drilling from surface between 1985 and 1987 which proved the continuation of gold-quartz mineralisation beneath the old mines.During 1989 an underground development program was commenced to access the mineralisation for detailed exploration. The program included two simultaneous shaft developments. These were known as B2 shaft and Llanberris No.1 shaft.

In many mining operations, the truck and loader equipment represents the bulk of the invested capital and the majority of the mine operating cost. The profitability of these mines is therefore critically linked to the efficiency of the truck and loader operations. The various factors which affect the productivity of trucks and loaders are analysed by computer simulation, and the results presented in a form allowing assessment of the importance of each factor on overall productivity.

Vale is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Since the 1970s, Vale has been using reverse cationic flotation to remove siliceous impurities from its iron ores. Whilst this flotation process has operated effectively for many years, it suffers from the problems of high reagent costs and high metal loss.In 2010, CSIRO investigated the use of a reverse anionic flotation process for Vale iron ore. Batch laboratory flotation studies conducted on Vale samples showed significantly reduced reagent costs and improved recovery of iron. In this work, the flotation behaviour of the different impurities in the Vale iron ore sample using reverse cationic and reverse anionic flotation processes is compared. The Nena Cu-Au high sulphidation deposit has formed within the Frieda River Intrusive Complex in association with a major dilatant structure. Multiple intermediate intrusives of Miocene age are localised by a splay (Frieda Fault) of the Fiak-Leonard-Schultz Thrust, a several hundred kilometre long structure, formed parallel to the accretionary prism of northern Papua New Guinea.The high sulphidation systems including Nena, crop out as narrow silica-alunite ridges extending for up to 5-6km in length within a dilational structural environment. Alteration at Mena exhibits two phases of hydro-thermal activity: an initial stage, inferred to be volatile-rich, which has produced zoned alteration; and a later phase, postulated to have been a liquid-dominated fluid, which has brecciated earlier alteration zones and deposited gangue phases as well as Cu/Au-bearinq sulphides in open spaces.

Rock breakage is a major component of all mining and mineral processing operations with the particle size distribution linked to productivity through the comminution chain. Optimisation and automatic control of comminution, material handling, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, and energy efficiency. A key factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement to provide the necessary feedback and input for control. Moreover, to enable automatic control system it is necessary to provide a consistent, reliable size distribution measurement that avoids the significant errors resulting from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing clusters of fine particles. Published literature and observation of commercial systems indicate a body of predominantly 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited colour variation in the material. In order to overcome these limitations a university and industry collaboration developed three-dimensional particle measurement (3DPM) between 2006 and 2012, based on 3D surface profile measurement of the visible material on conveyor. 3DPM avoids particle delineation errors due to variation in material colour and shadows, detects overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identifies areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. 3DPM measures: the visible material and calculates its particle size distribution, bulk volume, detects boulders, and conveyor belt fill factor in an automated consistent manner. Furthermore, 3DPM’s advanced algorithms allow observation of particle variation that would otherwise be undetected without the capacity to identify visible areas-of-fines and overlapped particles. Boliden Mines has installed 3DPM at three operations for measurement between the stockpile silo and grinding mill, and measurement after the primary crusher. Fragmentation measurements across multiple years of measurement are presented with some observations of plant behaviour. In the future 3DPM results will be incorporated into automatic control strategies for plant optimisation. 3DPM is used across a wide range of material types and applications that also includes; limestone aggregate for quality control in manufacturing, agglomerates for closed-loop automatic control in chemical production, and measurement of coke for size-based blending feed control to the blast furnace in steel production. In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.

During the last few years the quality requirements on roads and railroads have become more accentuated due to the desire to minimise maintenance costs. This has, in turn, led to increasing requirements in the preparation of ballast materials and pavement aggregates. As the access to natural gravel in northern Europe is decreasing (due to lack of availability or by law restrictions) the use of crushed rock material is becoming more and more important. The aim of this paper is to derive and describe a universal method for the prediction of particle size distributions from compressing crusher machines such as jaw- and cone-crushers. Based on a closely defined physical model, expressions which define the size reduction process are derived. Conditions for simplifying assumptions are clearly outlined. The choice and mix of breakage functions is a central subtopic iò the analysis of the crusher machine processes. Known breakage functions are reviewed and evaluated. A new concept for determination of a true breakage operator which is related to physical properties of the crusher device and the size distribution of the feed material is introduced. Finally experimental tests are compared to numerical calculations. The method described in the paper can be a useful tool when designing crushing plants or when optimizing the output of compressing crusher Machines.

Longhole stope overbreak has always been a source of unwanted cost within the underground mining industry, and efforts to control it using various rock reinforcement systems have long been a rock engineering challenge. At the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations trials have been carried out using an innovative cable bolt reinforcement system known as Rib-Roc. The system, based loosely on the Swedish Rib-in-Roc concept, utilises zones or ribs of heavily reinforced rock in the troublesome hangingwall and back areas of longhole stoping. The trials were carried out under a strict qualitative and quantitative scientific stope measurement program utilising rock mechanics instrumentation. Not only did the trial demonstrate the success of the system but data obtained was useful in implementing the system virtually as standard practice throughout the operation.

Mineralogical study of the interactions between fluxes and iron-oxides helps to understand how magnetite oxidises to haematite during pellet firing. Samples of OneSteel magnetite pellets tested at COREM pilot plant were collected after three firing steps and were studied mineralogically. Preheated pellets revealed no particular microstructures related to the composition of fluxes but were more affected by their bed position. After kiln firing, the impacts of lime and magnesia became more apparent. Magnetite oxidation is complete in the cooling stage. The position and the microstructure of the residual magnetite can bring useful information that could æcompleteÆ the view of the firing cycle.
