A complete swies of solid solutions has been found between the compounds InAs and GaAs Below the solidus. The melting relations determined by differential thermal and static quenching technzques, indicate that the liquidus and solidus are of the simple ascendant type. No evidence of unmixing of the homogeneous solid solutions was observed at sub-solidus temperatures. A quenching method for locnting the solidus, using X-ray diffraction techniques, is described in some detail. THE semi-conducting properties of compounds formed by various combinations of the less familiar intermetallic elements have created an increasing interest in the phase relations in systems involving these elements. The complete phase diagram of such a system, containing a compound of special interest, will often provide information as to the most favorable conditions for preparing large crystals from a melt, as well as specifying the temperature stability of the crystalline phase or phases produced. In view of the current importance of gallium arsenide in semiconductor research and of the structural similarities of indium arsenide, it was thought that the complete phase relations of the system InAs-GaAs should be investigated. Previous work on the system Ga-As by Koster and homa' and on In-As by Liu and peretti2 has shown that GaAs and InAs are the only compounds formed, having melting points of 1238° and 942°C, respectively. In a partial investigation of the InAs-GaAs system, Woolley and smith4 found extensive solid solution throughout the alloy range. Their subsolidus work, however, was inconclusive at temperatures below 900" and they did not determine the liquidus relationships of the system. PRESENT INVESTIGATION The starting materials used were high-purity gallium, indium, and arsenic. The method of preparation of the compounds follows that devised by M. Shafer and is described in detail in a paper by Shafer and eiser.' The end-member compounds, GaAs and InAs, were first prepared by reaction of the elements in the desired proportions in evacuated silica glass vials. The vials were rotated in a furnace as the temperature was slowly raised to insure rapid and complete reaction at low temperatures. Thereafter the starting materials, GaAs and InAs, were melted by heating the sealed vials to 1300" and 1000°C, respectively; the vials in this case were filled as completely as possible to keep the vapor space small and thereby minimize the loss of arsenic to the vapor phase. Ten binary mixtures of these compounds were then prepared by reaction of the powdered material in the solid state just below solidus temperatures. At 900C preparations containing 3, 5, 8, 10, 25, 35, 50, and 75 mol pct GaAs were found to be single homogeneous phases, indicating a complete series of solid solutions between GaAs and InAs. Moreover, it was discovered that the homogeneity of any crystalline binary preparation could be very accurately checked by X-ray diffraction because of the large differences in unit cell dimensions of the end membe5s. The cubic lattice constant ofor GaAs is a = 5.652A and that of InAs is a = 6.061A

The deformation and fracture characteristics of lithium-fluoride single crystals stressed in compression at room temperature have been studied. In as-cleaved specimens the stress-strain curves were variable; two types of {110} fractures were observed in the vicinity of kink bands. The stress-strain curves of annealed crystals were reproducible; {100} cracks formed which propagated along the (100) and (110) planes. The deformation and fracture characteristics were affected by quenching and X-ray irradiation. STUDY of the mechanical behavior of nonmetallic materials has received considerable impetus in recent years because of the need to overcome the problem of brittleness before the refractory properties of nonmetallics can be fully exploited. Ionic crystals provide a convenient and simplified starting point from which to study the deformation and fracture processes in nonmetallic materials. Early investigations of the mechanical behavior of non-metals were restricted largely to determinations of the crystallographic indices of the cleavage and fracture planes and the glide and twinning elements. Until recently, only occasional systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of non-metals have been made; and investigations of the forces necessary to initiate plastic deformation and the factors which affect the flow characteristics have been restricted largely to studies of sodium chloride'-7 , magnesium oxides-l3 and lithium fluoride. 14-22 Fracture studies on alkali halide and metal oxide single crystals have been limited despite the fact that these materials have a number of advantages for fracture studies. Because they are transparent, the cracks which form can be viewed in three dimensions instead of in two dimensions as in metals. Also, they exhibit stress birefringence under polarized illumination, which enables the internal stress pattern and, therefore, the distribution of dislocations to be examined in the vicinity of the fracture. Early workers1-4 have shown that ionic crystals with a cubic structure fracture in tension along the (100) plane normal to the applied stress. These fractures were brittle at room temperature and propagated very rapidly across the cross section of the crystal. More recently, Stokes, Johnston, and Lil0 have studied crack formation in compressed magnesium-oxide single crystals. They found that the cracks, which were observed after about 3 pct strain, formed in the region of a kink band and lay on conjugate (110) slip planes instead of the usual(100) cleavage plane. Two different types of cracks were noted: stroh23 and secondary. The Stroh cracks did not exist merely on the surface but extended through the specimen in the form of tiny slits. A secondary

A method is described for using radioactive tracer for the direct determination of ionic mobility in a molten electrolyte. The ionic mobility of Fe" in silica-saturated iron silicate is found to be 0.0009 (*0.0002) cm2 sec ' volt L at 1250°C. eLECTROCHEMICAL studies', ' of molten iron eE oxide and iron silicates have shown some ionic conductivity at all compositions. THE hardening of alloys by the precipitation of a second phase has long been an important technological process. One approach towards improving our understanding of this phenomenon has been a correlation of mechanical properties with such parameters as particle size and inter par ticle spacing.' Several reviews of such data have appeared.2-4 A major limitation to this approach has been that for most alloys the particles are submicroscopic in size in the range of optimum hardness. Precipitation-hardening copper-cobalt alloys, therefore, are of interest, because the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate make it possible to measure particle size, number of particles, and so forth, from magnetic measurements alone.5, 6 Livingston and Becker7 have applied these techniques to a study of precipitation hardening in an alloy of 2 pct Co in copper. It was found from magnetic measurements that nearly all the cobalt to be precipitated was out of solution within a few minutes at 600°C, whereas the peak in tensile yield stress was not attained until a much longer aging time. Thus during the first 1000 min of aging time at 600°C the Yield stress was increasing while a constant volume of precipitate was coarsening, i.e., while particle size and interparticle spacing were increasing. Peak yield stress was reached at an average particle radius of about 70A. The earlier study was confined to one alloy at one aging temperature, so that the volume fraction of precipitate was fixed and, therefore, particle size and interparticle spacing could not be independently varied. The work has now been extended to several alloys of varying percentage cobalt in copper, and to aging at various temperatures. It was hoped that such a study might clarify the relative importance to precipitation hardening of particle size, interparticle spacing, and volume fraction of precipitate. EXPERIMENT The alloys studied contained 0.7, 1.3, 2.0, and 3.2 wt pct Co in copper. They were prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic cobalt in a vacuum -induction furnace, worked to 3/8-in.-diam rod, and machined into tensile specimens with a gage section 1 1/2 in. long and 3/16 in. in diam. All specimens were given a solution treatment consisting of a 30-min anneal in nitrogen at 1000° C followed by a quench into iced brine. Subsequent aging was done in nitrogen and followed by a water quench. Average grain diameter was approximately 0.01 in.

U.S. Signs Pact With Miami Copper Miami Copper Co., of Arizona has agreed to mine lowgrade copper ores in an extension of its Globe-Miami mining district operations at a guaranteed price of 27.35[] per lb, under a contract signed with defense Materials Procurement Agency. Terms of the contract call for delivery of 230 million lb of refined copper between 1955 and 1962. DMPA said highgrade ore in the de posit will soon be exhausted and it is considered advisable to have Miami continue the operation. The Government has an option to buy 120 million lb of refined copper from present production at market prices. Miami will develop the new ore- body at its own expense-estimated at $3 million. If losses under the new contract reach a specified point, Miami may cancel the agreement. The company plans to use the block caving method in the underground operation.

Some of the significant facts that will affect the supply and demand for metals during the next few decades are given in this presentation. This is important because the only hope for intelligent guidance of the national destiny depends upon presenting a consistent and accurate picture of basic problems. The metals problems now fomenting are only slightly less important than those precipitating the energy crisis. Admittedly, it is difficult to generate serious thinking on this subject when the world is enjoying easy access to all metals at modest prices. This is possible because of the current world capacity to over-produce, and United States credit standing, at least up to now, has permitted buying freely on world markets. Although both these vital conditions are subject to change, there is little doubt that if the U.S. financial house is kept in order, we can muddle along for a while on a generally expanding, metal-based economy. But should our credit standing be permitted to collapse, or should there be a tightening of world supplies of metals, the nation would immediately find itself in trouble. Unfortunately, clear signals indicate that both of these conditions are threatening. The metal age started many centuries ago, and with the exception of the noble metals, barely a dent was made in world reserves until the present century. Then, as a result of the pioneering ideas of D. C. Jackling and Paul Gemmel, and the willingness of the McNeals, Penroses and Guggenheims to back ideas with money, a virtual explosion of metal production was propagated throughout the world. It is important to examine the causes of this expansion to determine whether it is a trend that may be sustained or whether it is anomalous and therefore attributable to circumstances not likely to be repeated or continued. This period of plenty is a once only phenomenon. Vast metal resources have been sitting around here for eons, while the world was unaware of or unconcerned with their existence. But when population began to grow exponentially, and ways were discovered to use metals to develop machines to do the work of men and animals, the exploitation of raw materials increased at a staggering rate. And now the realization is dawning that minerals are a wasting asset and are beginning to present supply problems that should begin to be of concern. Two main factors have caused this condition; One is the population growth, and the other is the expanding demand for irreplaceable raw materials as nations become more developed. A group of systems analysts, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a book Limits of Growth, has warned that at present rates of population growth and resource consumption together with environmental constraints, a point will be reached within 100 years when the world population will become totally incapable of supporting itself. The authors conclude that this end result could be avoided if a planned equilibrium could be established at a lower rate of population growth and resource consumption. Fortunately, there is evidence that the population problem is moderating. The growth rate in the U.S. has decreased from 2.3% per year in 1900 to 1.1% in 1970. But, even at the lower rate, population will double in 70 years. The world rate is greater, and if it continues, world population will rise from 3.5 billion to nearly 10 billion in 50 years. All of these projections are questionable because the dangers of growing population are now being recognized. A marked decrease in growth rate has been noted in the more developed countries-in fact, it was zero in the U.S. in 1972. The other factor affecting consumption of raw materials is the increase in per capita use of most items as individuals become more affluent. Many economists believe that developing countries such as China and India represent a vast future potential market; but there are others, with whom the author agrees, who believe over-population tends to stagnate development. Nevertheless, it is a fact that vigorously developing societies increase consumption at a rate far above their population growth rate.

THE year 1924 saw little change in the production of oil and gas it either Pennsylvania or New York. In the early months of the year the price of Pennsylvania crude oil, $4.00 to $4.50 a barrel, was sufficiently high to cause operators to lay plans for rather extensive drilling opera-tions. But when, in August, the price dropped to $2.85 a barrel, there was no inducement for new work and drilling was curtailed. In spite of the curtailment, however, the combined production of the two states for the year showed a slight increase over 1923, the production being 8;859,000 bbl. in 1923, and 8,901,000 bbl.1 in 1924. The increased production was due entirely to. the continued development of flooding operations in the Bradford field, all other oilfields showing a decline for the year. TABLE 1. Natural gas in Pennsylvania is fast being recognized at its true worth and the increased prices allowed 'the gas companies for their product induced quite a bit of new work. The relative importance of natural gas compared with manufactured gas is shown in Table 2.2

DISCUSSION I. M. Symonds, (Cia. Minera de Penoles, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico)—Messrs. Boeke and Gunther have written most interesting papers describing their zinc de-leading operations. Mr. Gunther was kind enough to show me his operation last fall. Aside from the excellent results, I was most impressed by the ease of control. I had expected a difficult operation requiring careful control and supervision, but found one requiring little attention. The only disappointing fact of the separation is the poor copper recovery in the concentrate of the delead-ing float. The final zinc concentrate still has about 3 pct chalcopyrite, assuming the copper is chalcopyrite, and adversely affects the zinc grade. If the copper mineral is free, the poor recovery is probably due to the high cyanide concentration. Fortunately, about 75 pct of the copper is recovered before the pulp goes to the zinc circuit. Mr. Gunther's remarks about proper cyanide to zinc sulphate ratios cannot be overemphasized. Although our experience has been confined mostly to the conventional lead-zinc separation, we have found these ratios most important, and more important in the mill than in the laboratory. The laboratory appears to give optimum results over a wider range of reagent control than the mill, especially in regard to the effect of cyanide. In handling relatively high grade ores in the mill we usually find that ratios of cyanide to zinc sulphate of 1 to 10 or 20 or higher work best. Where there is a substantial amount of chalcopyrite present it has been noted that cyanide in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 lb per ton of ore is often beneficial in zinc rejection and possibly in copper recovery in the lead concentrate, while larger amounts, say 0.20 to 0.25 lb per ton, will float more zinc and cause a serious rejection of chalcopyrite. On an ore with 15 to 20 pct zinc content we have had to use 0.8 to 1.2 pounds of zinc sulphate per ton of ore with the above cyanide to obtain optimum results. Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. A reasonably clean lead float from the zinc concentrate was obtained. It has been checked several times and each time the zinc concentrate made in the mill responds and the one made in the labora-

SIXTY-FIVE million net tons of coal were carbonized in the by-product and beehive coke ovens1 of the United States during 1924. This tonnage represented 13.4 per cent. of the bituminous coal which was mined in that year. American coals have a wide range of purity and coking quality, and the chief subject of this paper will be the selection of coals for the manufacture of blast furnace, foundry, domestic, and water-gas coke, in by-product coke ovens. It will obviously be necessary to include a discussion of those physical and chemical characteristics that are generally considered essential or desirable for each type of coke.

AT THE New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,1 in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to bean alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papers which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangements were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. MATERIAL EXAMINED The material examined was high-emission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated.

Although the liquid-solid cyclone is a relatively recent innovation in the field of coal preparation, various authors have already indicated three distinct applications to operations encountered in the modern tipple. Driessen's articles and work at the Dutch State Mines exhibited its possibilities in the beneficiation of fine coal with apparently high efficiencies down to the 200-mesh fraction. 1 2 3 4 Other publications point out its use as a recoverer, thickener, and preliminary dewatering agent of fine coal which in too many cases is being wasted due largely to former high operating cost limitations 5 6. Finally, certain authors have emphasized the practicability of applying the cyclone to the elimination of coarse and fine solids from water slurries in the tipple in order to produce a water suitable for recycle purposes containing only minute particles far below the 200-mesh size.6 This would result in a closed water system for many cases, with its accompanying economic and operating advantages to locations where water quantity and quality problems are severe; better operation of washing equipment using a consistent water devoid of injurious fine particles; lowered maintenance costs due to the lesser abrasion resulting when the fine abraiding particles are removed; and the greater ease of disposing of refuse streams of reduced volume containing greater percentages of solids.

Attention is called to the changes in officers of the Committee, whereby Albert Sauveur becomes Vice-Chairman, and Herbert M. Boylston, Secretary. Three new members of the Committee have been added, as follows : J. Esrey Johnson, Jr., William Kelly, William R. Walker. The death of Dr. F. WV. C. Schniewind is a severe personal blow to the members of the Committee, as well as a loss on the technical side that will be hard to fill. A study has been made of the structural changes in polycrystalline high purity aluminum during the tertiary stage of creep under conditions of constant tensile load. It appears that there is no basic modification in the particular mechanism of deformation that characterized the preceding secondary stage of creep, but that the changes in crystalline structure produced during the tertiary stage are only a consequence and not a cause of the accelerated strain. Intercrystalline fissures were observed on entry into the tertiary stage, and these might supplement the accelerated rate of strain owing to local stress concentrations. There is evidence that the formation of these fissures may be associated with the presence of surface imperfections, and it is suggested that a more generalized treatment of the results may explain certain creep characteristics of commercial alloys. IN previous work'-4 a study was made of the changes produced when specimens of annealed aluminum were deformed at various temperatures and rates of strain, especially under conditions leading to creep under constant tensile load. It was shown that, as the temperature was increased or as the rate of strain was decreased, elements of the substructure produced within the grains became coarser, and with the strain rate constant at a given temperature, their size tended to an equilibrium value. The preliminary process of the breaking down of the grains into a substructure was identified with primary creep.' The subsequent equilibrium, condition was associated with secondary creep. The question then arose whether the tertiary stage corresponded to any further significant change in the substructure. The question is also of interest in view of the opinion, expressed for instance by Andrade,5 that the tertiary stage is merely an accelerated rate of strain due to the reduced area of section of a specimen under continuous tensile load, and the other opinion, as suggested by the observation by Sully, Cale, and Willoughby6 of a tertiary stage in com-pressive loading, that this third stage is a real effect in its own right. The object of this paper is to record some observations on the tertiary stage of high purity aluminum. Experimental Procedure The material was aluminum of 99.98 pct purity as previously used. The specimens had a rectangular section of l/8 x l/2 in., and extensions were measured over a 1 in. gage length. After machining to shape, the specimens were annealed to give a standard grain size of 0.2 mm and then electropolished. The general procedure involved metallographic and X-ray diffraction examination at progressive stages of elongation (marked by arrows on the curves shown in Figs. 1 and 2), the specimen being extended to fracture under constant load at a given temperature. The X-ray tests were made by the back-reflection method from a stationary specimen, using CoK radiation. The longer edge of the micrographs in the paper corresponds to the direction of applied stress. Results The previous work showed that, in the secondary stage of creep in aluminum, three basic types of structure could be developed according to the temperature and rate of strain. These were: 1—slip, which predominated at the lower temperatures and higher rates of strain and produced the finest and least perfect substructure; 2—cell structure, which superseded slip as the temperature was raised and the rate of strain decreased and which was characterized by a coarser and more perfect structure and an absence of slip lines; and 3—a stage termed "boundary microflow," which predominated at still higher temperatures and lower rates of strain when the cell size had increased and become comparable
