THE rapid increase in reliability, the low cost f operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the' motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made.

The year 1942 in Michigan was devoted largely to the development of fields discovered in 1941 but was also characterized by a great increase in prospecting for new productive horizons below the Dundee limestone. Some new fields were discovered but as yet these have shown few signs of being of major importance. Michigan's total production for 1942, of 21,754,000 bbl. of oil, as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, was second only to the record year of 1939 when 22,799,000 bbl. of oil were produced. All important fields were prorated throughout the year, and it is obvious that without proration a new all-time high would have been established for the state this year. Development in Fields Reed City Field.—During 1942 the Reed City field, which ended 1941 with 112 producing oil wells, added 70 new producers to bring the total at the end of the year to 182 wells and 4700 proven acres. A south extension of the field developed during the year was in large part responsible for the increase. Approximately 9,000,000 bbl. of oil was produced from the field during the year, bringing the total accumulated production to the end of the year to roughly 11,750,000 barrels. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which started the year with ro producing oil wells, ended the year with 41 wells aid 1240 proven acres. Approximately 2,300,000 bbl. of oil was produced in 1942. Kawkawlin Field.—Although not a 1941 discovery, the Kawkawlin field has been actively developed on the 40-acre spacing plan during the last year, 42 producers having been completed, bringing the total number of wells at the end of the year to 77. Nearly 500,000 bbl. of oil was produced during the year.

In 1924, the Crescent Eagle Oil Co., while drilling the salt section of the Paradox formation in Grand County, Utah, encountered a salt that did not appear to be sodium chloride. This salt was analyzed and showed the presence of potash minerals, both sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgC12.6H2O). Because of the high potash content of the sample, there was considerable speculation: (I) as to whether the hole had been salted, and (2), if not, the extent, richness, and the depth at which the deposit occurred. The discovery caused a large amount of activity in the area. During the next few years, 68 potash prospecting permits were issued by the Government, 24 under the Act of 1917 and 44 under the Act of Feb. 7, 1927, each including about four sections of land. Several holes, all shallow, were drilled for potash. A number of holes were drilled for oil into the salt horizon and the cuttings collected at the oil wells were examined petrographically and chemically. The shallow test holes were not sufficiently deep to reach the potash horizon and revealed nothing of value, but several of the oil test holes gave some indication of where potash might be found. Location and Geology of Deposits The potassium and magnesium salts have been found in various places from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks about seven miles west of Thompsons, in eastern Utah, to Cane Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River— a distance north and south of about 35 miles. In this locality, there appear to be five separate deposits: the Crescent Eagle area, which is in T. 22 S., R. 19 E.; the Salt Valley area, in the vicinity of the north-south line of T. 23 S., between R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; the Seven Mile area, in the eastern part of T. 25 S., R. 20 E.; the Cane Creek area, on the Colorado River, in T. 26 S. and T. 27 S., R. 20 E. and R. 21 E.; and the Salt Wash area, in T. 22 S. and T. 23 S., R. 16 E. and R. 17 E. (Fig. I.) The Crescent Eagle and Salt Valley areas are in the Salt Valley anticline, some of the wells being in the fault graben and others outside. Structurally, the Salt Valley anticline is very complex, and can be described in general terms as a northwesterly plunging collapsed anticline about 15 miles long. In the Crescent Eagle area, the valley graben is about 1 1/2 mile wide and the salt probably forms a plug, the apex of which is in the vicinity of the Crescent Eagle well. Owing to the complex structure, there has been every opportunity for flowage in the salt to cause local thinning or thickening of beds. Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu's. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation's energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu's by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

THE WORLD Coal, as a source of energy and as a source of coke for the smelting of iron ore, has contributed significantly to the development of every major industrial nation of the world A number of other materials-oil, natural gas, wood, waste materials, water, and, in some applications, nuclear materials -can be used satisfactorily for the generation of heat and energy, but no generally acceptable and economic substitute has been found to supplant coke in iron ore smelting in conventional blast furnaces. In the development of many nations, coal provided the initial source of energy for industrialization Although coal provided more than 60% of the world's energy each year between 1902 and 1929, oil and natural gas have surpassed it as a source of energy in more recent years (Ref. 38, pp. 439, 441). Despite the rapid rise in importance of other fuels, a considerable amount of the total energy consumed is still supplied by coal. In 1972, coal supplied 32.1 % of the total world energy (Ref. 49, pp. 2-3). To produce this energy, 2.4 billion metric tons of coal were consumed-a 16.0% increase over the amount consumed in 1962. A further worldwide increase in the amount of coal used to supply energy is projected. According to Dr. Karlheinz Bund (Ref. 37, p 145), by the year 2000 world coal consumption could amount to 5 billion mt. Coal Resources and Production The world's coal resources are estimated to be about 10,872 billion mt. Of this amount, 1,297 billion mt are classified as measured reserves (Ref. 50, p. 57). In Table 13.A.1 the estimates of measured reserves and total resources, recent production, and the ratio of measured reserves to production of major coal-producing countries are shown. About 90% of the world's total coal resources are estimated to be in the USSR, the United States, and China. The United States ranks second in the world in coal resources, but in measured reserves, it ranks first. Because of the difference in rate at which available coal resources are being exploited, the ratio of measured reserves to actual production varies widely among areas and countries. France and East Germany have the lowest reserve to production ratios, 49.5 and 60.1, respectively. In Mexico, where currently less than 5 million mtpy of coal are produced, the ratio is 1257 For all countries producing more than 200 million mtpy of coal (except East Germany), the ratio ranges from 350 to 670. For the United States, the ratio is 669.7. In Table 13.A.2, distribution of the world's coal resources by area is shown. At the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper-Smelting,"' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, FeS. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu,S, 90.4, and FcS, 9.6 per cent. (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and FeS, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent. of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent. of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that five of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the ferrous sulphide-cuprous sulphide series, and to see how the constitution could be further revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, " The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron-Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at. longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), [Fig. 1]. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

The adsorption behavior of chalcopyrite has been studied at different xanthate concentrations and flow rates in a column apparatus with potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector. Based upon the experiment results an equation of the type: 1/F = K3 + m3C + k2/t.Cm2.fm1 is proposed to account for the experimental data. Among copper minerals an early study on chalcocite by Gaudin and Schuman (Taggart, 1951) is well known for its research on the kinetics of the reaction by conventional method of mass balance between the products of reaction and xanthate consumed. The results were interpreted by the concept of ion exchange adsorption. Szeglowski (1977) conducted measurements on the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on copper polarized to various potentials, the adsorption being measured by radio-tracer techniques. The adsorption in the range -1800 to 700 mv was found to be a reversible physical adsorption. The potential range in which the primary electrode process could lead to surface coverage with a minimum number of product layers was evaluated. The adsorption density of xanthate on sulfide surface was found to be related to the concentration of xanthate in solution and concentration of depressants as: [ ]

Within the last 15 years David Brown Gear Industries has manufactured approximately 200 large mill gears over 6m diam., 58 of them over 9 m and up to 12 m diam. The experience has not been without problems, due to a lack of clear understanding of the loads and stresses imposed on large gear wheels. American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) practices suggest that a service factor be used for mill gears. But what is meant by "service factor"? The layman might be forgiven for believing that the term is synonymous with "safety factor," but this is certainly not true. The service factor is an aggregate of the following in some proportion: -An application factor, i.e., an allowance for the fact that systems do not run smoothly with uniform torque. -An ignorance factor covering the imperfections in the basic gear calculation. -Possibly a safety factor. In the following sections some of the ways in which the limits of applicability can be overstepped are discussed.

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives : 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. At Cobalt, Ontario, Canada, a lake was drained to facilitate mining, by the Mining Corpn. of Canada, during the spring and early summer of 1915. Previous to pumping out the water, great quantities of sands and slimes from concentrating plants had been discharged into the lake and during and after the lake's drainage, its basin was a receptacle for tailing products. As the writer was at work along the shore line as the lake was being drained, he had a good opportunity to observe the changes that took place as the water was withdrawn. Some adjustments between the incoming sands and the mud in the lake had taken place before pumping was commenced. One of the most interesting results was the appearance of a small dome in a path the writer traversed twice a day for several months; he remembers distinctly the difficulty of crossing this. Cobalt Lake owed its existence to the gouging out of a rock basin by glaciation. The long axis of the basin closely follows the strike of a thrust fault of about 500 ft. (160 m.) vertical displacement. The lake was originally shaped somewhat as shown. The length was about 3000 ft. (914.4 m.), the width at the lower lobe was about 1000 ft., and the width at the narrows probably 400 to 500 ft. The original depth of water varied from 20 to 30 ft. (6.1 to 9.1 m.), near where the island later was formed, to 60 to 70 ft. (23.6 to 27.6 m.) in the widest part of the lower lobe. At the narrows, the depth was 30 to 40 ft. Above the bed rock was sand, with boulders near the bottom, and mud. During the building of the railroad in 1903, considerable filling was done along the right of way. With the commencement of mining operations, about 1905, waste rock and mill tailings were dumped into the lake. One of the mining companies operated a hydraulic giant to remove the glacial debris from several hundred acres of rock surface; much of the sand and clay from this operation was deposited in the lake. About 1,500,000 tons of mill tailings, composed of sands and slimes, were discharged into the lake's waters previous to 1915. Most of this material

MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems are met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present is severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hampers their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a resume of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels.

At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). The activities of SiO2, FeO, and Fe2O3 are calculated from previous experimental data on the activity of oxygen in Fe-Si-O melts at 1550°C. Using the oxide-activity data, the free energy of formation of fayalite from its oxides is evaluated for 1550°C. A number of investigators1-4 contributed to the study of the state of oxidation of iron in SiO,-FeO-Fe,O3 melts and the phase equilibria in the system Fe-Si-O. In a more detailed study, Schuhmann and Ensio5 and Michal and Schuhmann% easured the state of equilibrium in the SiO,-FeO-Fe,O3 melts saturated with y-iron or silica or both under low-oxygen potentials and within the temperature range 1250" to 1350°C. Similar measurements were also made by Turkdogan and Bills7,' over wide ranges of composition and oxygen potentials at 1550"C. Using the experimental data on the oxygen activities in the ternary system, Schuhmann' calculated the activities of silica and ferrous oxide in Si0,-FeO-Fe2O3 melts for 1350°C. Adequate knowledge on the activities of the constituent oxides of melts is essential in the study of reaction-equilibria and reaction-kinetics in oxide-melts. With this in view, the activities of oxides in SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3 melts at 1550°C are computed using the experimental data of Turkdogan and Bills7'8 on the oxygen activities in these melts.

The detailed mechanism of rockbursts and other forms of damage due to rock failure in underground mining is as yet unknown. Studies of the energy changes which necessarily occur when an excavation is made underground seem to provide the best understanding of the phenomena leading to rock failure and damage (see Cook 1). It is common knowledge that the damage and rockburst hazard increases with depth and is greatest at remnants and in regions mined in an irregular manner. The rate at which energy is released as an excavation is enlarged provides an objective parameter to describe mining geometry in terms which are significant to studies of rock failure. In this paper, it is shown empirically that the rate of energy release per unit area increase in the size of an excavation is closely related to seismicity and incidence of damage in the mine. Consequently, it is suggested that the energy release rate is an important parameter in the design of underground mine layouts. Observations were made at two mines: the East Rand Proprietary Mines, Ltd. (E.R.P.M.), at a depth of about 9000 ft, and at Harmony Gold Mining Co., Ltd., at a depth of about 5000 ft. At both of these mines continuous recording seismic networks were in operation. (See Cook and Joughin.3) DESCRIPTION At E.R.P.M. the gold-bearing reef dips at approximately 35 degrees and is presently being mined at depths from 8000 ft to 11,000 ft below surface. The rock surrounding the excavation consists of a very homogeneous quartzite extending far into the hangingwall and footwall. The stoping width is approximately 40 in.
