INTRODUCTION The El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chi le has extracted 588 mil lion tons of ore in its 77 year history for a total copper output of 8.800.000 tons. The mine production has been obtained mainly by traditional block-caving where grizzlemen using a hand held lever send ore through long-raises to load trains. At present the mine is about to introduce mechanized block-caving using LHD equipment to extract the primary rock. This paper describes this method which will be tested starting next month by caving an 11.000 square meter block. THE PRIMARY ROCK PROBLEM The secondary enrichment sulfides of the El Teniente ore body have characteristics which makes a standard unmechanized block-caving practice very successful. In the 60's parts of blocks encountered primary ow in the Teniente 1 and Sub-13 levels which proved to be extremely hard to extract. These foretold the obstacles that arised in the central part of the Teniente 4 level. Preparation of a completely primary 8.100 square meter block started in 1970. Its undercutting was completed by the end of 1972 and by 1973 the problem of mining the primary rock was clearly visualized. The numbers below describe the difficulties in mining this block: -Long-hole drilling rate is 90 m (270 ft) per shift in secondary rock and 37 m (110 ft) in primary. - Undercutting which is completed in 9 shifts in secondary took 180 shifts in the primary block. - Average grizzlymen productivity in secondary is 250 tons per shift while in primary it is only 25-30 tons, both at 343 mm (13 1/2 in. ) grizzly opening. - Powder consumption for secondary blasting increased from 8 grams per ton in secondary to 84 in primary. - The protection pillar between the under- cutting and the production levels was 60% broken in primary while 20% is usual for secondary. - Extraction advanced 5 cm per day in primary while a 50 cm per day rate is the aver- age in secondary. This is the main reason that after 8 years this primary block has a 20% extraction. Secondary blocks take 1.5 to 3 years to complete their extraction. - 80% of the boulders in primary rock are larger than 343 m (13 1/2 in.) with 10-20 % of them larger than 3 meters. -Direct cost of production (preparation, undercutting, extraction and haulage), using the traditional block-caving design for secondary rock, increased 3.5 to 4 times when used in primary rock. The following indicators of Table 1 show the rock characteristics differences.

The strtcture of body-centered Fe-Ni-C alloys (0 to 16.5 wt pct Ni) containing less than 0.015 wt pct C was investigated by measuring the carbon-diffusion peak at low frequencies with a torsion pendulurrr. By determining the Snoek damping in ferrite and in quenched alloys of identical composition, the effects of nickel content and heat treatment were separated, and the existence of a structure in which Snoek damping is greatly reduced was revealed in the quenched ternary alloys. The relative amount of this structure increases with increased nickel content and cooling rate. It is proposed that this structure may be highly imperfect or tetragonal. In Fe-Ni-C alloys containing only ferrite the addition of nickel (0 to 5.1 wt pet) decreases tke area of the carbon-diffusion peak and shifts its position to lower temperatures but broadens the peak only slightljl. The decrease in peak area with increasing nickel implies that short-range interactions with the nickel atoms prevent some of the carbon atoms from participating in the relaxation process. The shift in the peak position indicates a long-range effect of nickel on the movement of carbon atoms so that at 300°K the diffisivity of carbon in -ferrite is increased by about 35 pct by the addition of 5.1 tut pct Ni. The results are presented as distributions of relaxation strength 072 the activation energy under the assumption that the frequency factor is invariant. BODY-CENTERED iron-base solid solutions dissolve carbon interstitially in the octahedral sites. The occupation of an octahedral site produces a tetragonal distortion of the surrounding lattice. These sites fall into three sets according to the orientation of the tegragonal distortion associated with each and may be identified by their lattice coordinates as: type 1/2 0 0, type 0 1/2 0, type 0 0 1/2. At low carbon levels in cubic ferrite the carbon atoms are distributed at random1 among these sites. In high-carbon body-centered iron-base solid solutions, which are unstable with respect to several two-phase mixtures, a tetragonal structure occurs as the product of the diffusionless transformation of austenite. This transformation is commonly accompanied by appreciable microstrain and its product is called martensite. The tetragonality of martensite, a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron, is maintained prior to decomposition even though local diffusion of carbon occurs as evidenced by carbide precipitation. The tetragonality is taken as evidence that one set of octahedral sites is preferentially occupied by carbon. (This preferential occupation is called ordering below.) Support for this view is presented by the absence of strain-induced carbon-atom diffusion in high-carbon solid solutions (martensite). Such diffusion occurs in ferrite and produces the 40°C internal-friction peak observed at 1 cps frequencies.' Thus, there appears to be qualitative evidence favoring the view that at sufficiently high carbon levels tetragonality arises spontaneously as a result of the ordering of the carbon atoms; however, no experimental evidence exists concerning an equilibrium between cubic and tetragonal body-centered solid solutions. Moreover, attempts to estimate the energy of ordering7-' predict a value too low to maintain the tetragonality observed at medium carbon levels, 0.3 to 0.6 wt pct C. In the present work an attempt using internal-friction measurements is made to establish the presence or absence of tetragonality in low-carbon body-centered solid solutions formed by quenching austenite. Fe-Ni alloys containing about 0.01 wt pct and 0 to 15 wt pct Ni were selected for the study. While the work was in progress Gilbert and Owen10 reported that the transformation which occurs in these alloys during quenching at rates up to 5000°C per sec is not martensitic but is more properly categorized as massive. ANNEALING the binary alloy, Mg-0.5 wt pct Zr in a hydrogen atmosphere results in extensive precipitation of zirconium hydride. The morphology of these precipitates has already been investigated.lm3 Squires, Weiner, and phillips4 found, following creep testing of the hydrided alloy at 450" and 500°C, that hydride denuded zones formed along grain boundaries that were aligned approximately normal to the tensile axis. Zone formation was attributed to diffusional creep by magnesium transport down the prevailing stress gradients.4'5 Recently, electron microprobe analysis by Karim, Holt, and Backofen6 showed the zones indeed to be zirconium-free and furthermore it was shown that in compression, zones formed along boundaries approximately parallel to the stress axis. Thus it was confirmed that the zones are formed by diffusional creep. Typical zone-formation is shown in Fig. 1. Karim, Holt, and Backofen also measured the con- tribution to the total strain, from diffusional flow, slip creep, and grain boundary shear: results showed that diffusional strain tends to saturate with increasing imposed strain, while grain boundary shear eventually becomes the dominant deformation mode. It was suggested in explanation that the precipitate-denuded zones are soft and easily sheared, such deformation contributing to the grain boundary shear measurement. A point to be emphasized is that the Mg-0.5 Zr alloy was not superplastic for the index of strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, m = a log log 6 was only 0.25. It was recognized that diffusional creep in a poly crystalline aggregate must be accompanied by boundary shearing.' The suggestion was that the non Newtonian-viscous character of diffusional creep in the Mg-0.5 wt pct Zr alloy is due to resistance to sliding of boundaries lying approximately parallel to the tensile axis.= The work described in the present note should be seen against the above background for it represents initial efforts to observe in a similar way diffusional creep in a superplastic alloy. Previous work with the ternary-alloy Mg-6 Zn-0.5 Zr, pellet extruded, showed it to be superplastic however it does not contain resolvable precipitates to act as internal markers for diffusional creep. Also the fine grain size of the alloy (0.5 p) made conventional metallography rather difficult. Solubility relationships in the Mg-Zn-Zr system are not well known, however making reasonable guesses about the probable phase diagram of the ternary, Mg-Zn-Zr, various heat treatments were attempted to produce hydride precipitation. " -Charles Kettering INTRODUCTION Since the early 1970s, there has been no economic phenomenon that has been more widely discussed or experienced in the United States than inflation. Al- though its precise definition and measurement are elusive, inflation has had pro- found and extensive impacts on the manner in which nearly everyone lives. It is painfully obvious to consumers that inflation is characterized by a continuing up- ward spiral of prices. In a capital-intensive industry like mining, those increases can be positively breathtaking. An interesting example is shown in Table 1. Table I shows that on a unit basis, the equivalent 1980 capital cost of Cuajone was over six times the cost of the adjacent and quite similar Toquepala operation completed in 1959. Such sobering statistics weigh heavily on the minds of executives who are contemplating major investments in new mining facilities. In spite of its monumental presence, inflation has usually been either inadequately covered or totally ignored in textbooks on engineering economy. The reasons for this are not entirely clear, but a contributing factor is the inherent difficulty in accurately predicting inflation. However, under certain conditions, inflation may become the most important factor in a mining investment, and it can rarely be safely ignored in capital investment analyses. DEFINING AND MEASURING INFLATION Defining inflation and related terms is relatively easy. Its measurement, how- ever, is the source of almost endless debate in economic and political circles. How- ever, much of that debate is not relevant to the scope of this book, so that only those issues which impact directly on the capital investment decision are covered in this section. Inflation is the general decline in the value of money as measured by what it will buy. It is clear, then, that the rate of inflation varies with the particular currency under consideration as well as the type of goods and services being purchased. The Round Mountain mining district, Nye County, Ne- vada, was discovered in 1906 on claims owned by Lewis D. Gordon. Initial mining operations uncovered gold veins of spectacular richness, and within a few days of discovery, Gordon sold his controlling interest for some $87,000. From this sale emerged the Round Mountain Mining Co., predecessor of Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines, Inc., the latter destined to become the major property owner in the area. Vein mining in the district continued sporadically into the early 1930s, yielding 9.3 Mg (330,000 oz) of gold plus substantial silver credits from approximately 626 kt (690,000 st) of ore. In addition to the lode deposits, the early miners recognized the placer potential in the alluvial fan material accumulated around the west and north sides of Round Mountain itself. Intermittent placer operations were carried out for a number of years, and in the 1940s and 1950s, Round Mountain Gold Dredging Co. worked the placers under a lease from Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines. The last placer operation terminated in 1959 when it, like some of its predecessors, proved uneconomic. Total placer production for the district is estimated at 3657 km (4 million yd) of gravel containing 59 Mg (210,000 oz) of gold and possibly 2.0 to 2.3 Mg (70,000 to 80,000 oz) of silver. Round Mountain is a small hill situated on the east flank of the Toquima Range in central Nevada. The hill is com- posed of relatively flat-lying Tertiary rhyolitic ash flow tuffs, which overlie Paleozoic metasediments and Cretaceous granites. Throughout the surrounding Round Mountain mining district, most of the known gold ores occur in the tuffs, although the metasediments and granites are also mineralized. Mineralization is structurally controlled, principally by a series of northwest-trending shears and shattered zones. Vein, stockwork, and disseminated ores occur, usually containing simple quartz-pyrite-gold mineral assemblages. The gold itself is electrum, having a silver content of 30% to 40%. In September, 1967, Elwood Dietrich, a prospector and mine promoter, obtained a purchase option on the 4452 ha (1 1,000 acres) of mineral rights held at Round Mountain by Nevada Porphyry Gold Mines. The original option had a buy-out price of $1 million and was established through Dietrich's friendship with officers of Nevada Porphyry. In April, 1968, Dietrich conveyed his option to Ordrich Gold Reserves Co., a partnership created by a group of west coast investors, mostly employees of the airline industry. There- after, Ordrich invested considerable funds in trying to test and develop the property, but soon recognized the need to seek financial and technical support from the mining industry. In December, 1968, Dietrich contacted Wayne Cavender, then Regional Geologist, Southwest, for Copper Range Exploration Company (CRX) in Tucson, Arizona, and made a data presentation. Shortly thereafter, Cavender was appointed Manager of Exploration and Chief Geologist for Copper Range Co. (parent company of CRX), New York City, and he asked C. Phillips Purdy, CRX Regional Geologist, Northwest, to make an initial property examination. Purdy's one-week field study took place in March, 1969, and resulted in a recommendation that CRX pursue its investigation of the property. The presence of low-grade gold mineralization in both the alluvial gravels and in the bedrock was verifiable, but the placer was deemed to have the greater immediate economic mining potential. At that time, gold was in the $1.41/g ($40 per oz) price range. Working from Purdy's information, Cavender decided to attempt acquisition of the property, and the first in a long series of negotiations was initiated with Ordrich. Basically, CRX felt that the placer had a promising potential for several reasons, including (I) past operators had recovered free gold but not the gold contained in the pebble fraction of the gravels; (2) past operations appeared to have been ineffectively designed or managed and not costefficient; and (3) the price of gold appeared to be poised for an upward move. Negotiations with Ordrich were prolonged and difficult, with CRX competing against several ma* mining companies, but finally an agreement was reached, effective June I, 1970. CONSTRUCTION of the long projected Moffat tunnel, on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R., between Tolland and Irving, Colorado, is now actually and actively progressing. This 6.1-mile bore through the Rocky Mountains, at an elevation of about 9200 ft., will eliminate 33 1/3 miles of probably the most tortuous standard-gage track in the world, and at the same time will avoid the necessity for crawling over the snow-bound continental divide at an elevation of 11,660 ft Completion of the tunnel within the stipu-lated four years, is expected to nave an immediate effect on the develop-ment of the known coal fields in north-western Colorado, already penetrated at Craig, the present terminus of the road, while it will also enable the railroad to carry out the original designs of its founder, David H. Moffat, for through traffic from farther west. The intention now is to accomplish the latter object by an extension from McCoy following the canon of the Grand River down to a connection with the Denver & Rio Grande at Dotsero. Legal impediments to the financ-ing of the tunnel having been removed by action of the Colorado legislature in April, 1922, the Moffat Tunnel Improvement District issued bonds to the amount of $6,720,000 which have been widely and quickly distrib-uted through a New York banking house. Responsi-bility for the execution of the project has been vested in the Moffat Tunnel Commission, to which a board of consulting engineers has been appointed for carrying out the details of administration. This board includes D. W. Brunton and L. D. Blauvelt, of Colorado, and J. Vipond Davies and J. Waldo Smith, of New York; R. H. Keays, who has managed large tunnel projects in New York, is chief engineer for the Commission.

Conclusive evidence is given showing that the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution follows mainly the over-all equation A similar equation can also be written for the dissolution of silver. Theoretical derivation of the velocity equation for this reaction has been obtained, which describes quantitatively the experimental facts. The equation is as follows: where [CN-] and [O2] = the concentrations (in moles/ml) of cyanide and dissolved oxygen, respectively. DcN- and Do2 = the diffusion coefficients of cyanide and dissolved oxygen; 1.83 x 10-5 and 2.76 x 10-5 cm2 sec-1, respectively. A = the surface area of the metal in contact with the aqueous phase, in cm S = the thickness of the boundary layer; varies between 2 and 9 x 10-3 cm, depending on the speed and method of agitation. Rate being expressed in g. equiv. sec-1. INTRODUCTION During recent years a number of papers have been published on the kinetics of dissolution of gold and silver in cyanide solution.1,6 The authors agree that the rate of dissolution is diffusion-controlled, but disagree regarding the mechanism of the reaction. Some authors'-3 support the Bodlander equations: The apparently conflicting results, when critically reviewed, are concordant and lead to the conclusion that the proper equation for the dissolution reaction should be only Eq. 1. This conclusion is based on the following facts: 1) For every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved one mole O2 was consumed. 2) For every 1 equivalent of metal dissolved, 2 moles of cyanide were consumed.' 3) Hydrogen peroxide is formed during the dissolution of gold or silver, and for every 2.2 equivalents of metal dissolved, one mole H2O2 was produced.1,2 The fact that Kudryk and Kellogg4 did not detect H2O2 during the dissolution of gold should not throw doubt on the many affirmative reports of other investigators. Lund2 has shown that depending on the crystalline nature of the silver surface, (e.g. method of etching the sample) H2O2 may undergo catalytic decomposition heterogeneously according to: Further Kudryk and Kellogg4 carried out their experiments in the presence of 0.5% KC1 to achieve a greater electrolytic conductivity, and Matsudaira7 has shown that H2O2 is catalytically decomposed (homogeneously) in the presence of C1- ion in alkaline solution. 4) Experiments carried out by Boonstra8 and Lund2 showed that the dissolution of gold and silver respectively in KCN + H2O2 in the absence of oxygen was a slow process. Thus the reaction takes place to a minor extent only. Further kinetic studies showed that: 1) The rate of dissolution depends on the surface area of the metal in contact with the liquid phase, thus indicating that the process of dissolution is a heterogeneous process. 2) The rate of dissolution depends on the speed of stirring,5,6 thus indicating that the process is controlled by a physical phenomenon.

The results of this investigation show that in the system SnTe-PbTe l) the solid solutions have small exothermic heats of formation relative to the binary compounds, 2) solid-solution hardening is almost absent, 3) the tin and lead atoms are .randomly distributed on the sublattice occupied by them and do not undergo an ordering transition during a thermal treatment designed to promote such a transition, and 4) the lattice parameter changes linearly with composition. These findings suggest that the solid solutions of tin telluride and lead telluride approach ideal behavior. THE binary compounds SnTe and PbTe form a continuous series of solid solutions.' Information on several physical properties of these solid-solution alloys has been published.1"3 In the work reported here, the heats of formation, microhardness, and lattice parameters of these alloys have been measured and the possibility of an order-disorder transition has been investigated. Order-disorder transitions occur in some solid solutions of binary compounds. In the system Bi2Te3-BizSes, for example, the electropositive bismuth atoms and the electronegative tellurium and selenium atoms always occupy separate layers. In the disordered alloy Bi2Te2Se, the tellurium and selenium atoms are randomly distributed on the layers occupied by them, while in the ordered alloy they occupy distinct layers.4 The NaC1-type (Bl) structure of SnTe-PbTe alloys consists of two sublattices, one of which is occupied by the electropositive tin and lead atoms and the other by the electronegative tellurium atoms; any ordering would be expected to occur in the sublattice occupied by the tin and lead atoms. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS Polycrystalline specimens of PbTe and Sn1-xPbxTe (x = 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of lead (99.999 pct), tin (99.98 pct), and tellurium (99.999 pct) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes. Because of the deviation of tin telluride from the stoichiometric composition5 this compound was prepared by melting 49.8 at. pct Sn and 50.2 pct Te. The tubes containing the melts were quenched into water; the solidified ingots were removed from the tubes and annealed for 2 weeks in vacuum (PbTe approximately 100°C below its melting point, the three alloys 100°C below their solidus tem-

COLLIGAN*-I can best illustrate my opinions by drafting another five year plan (Table 2). This plan is set up following the same stipulations outlined by Dr. Behre, namely: (I) the student is preparing himself for commercial work as a mining geologist; (2) he is attending an institution with a sufficiently broad curriculum (that is, engineering school and mining school as well as liberal arts college) to furnish the courses listed; and (3) he is not planning to continue his studies through to a doctor's degree before going into commercial work. A comparison of my study plan (Table 2) and that submitted by Dr. Behre (Table I) will at once point up the basic similarity, due to the obvious fact that there are so many essential courses which must be included in any outline of study. However, a more detailed analysis will show up certain differences, which, in fact, are only certain refinements on Dr. Behre's program. These I plan to discuss in order of their importance. The first and most important change is the addition of 12 hr of optional subjects, making a total of 24 hr of optional subjects as against a total of 12 hr under Dr. Behre's schedule. This of course entails the elimination of certain courses, which I shall discuss later. However, I wish to make it clear that I suggest eliminating these courses not because I feel that they are unnecessary, but rather because I feel the optional courses are more necessary to the complete education of the individual. I appreciate that Dr. Behre recognizes the importance of the cultural side of education, but I take issue with his thesis that the student will get it without credit and in his spare time. I do not think that the average college student, and certainly not the college freshman, is mature enough to know what he needs and where to get it in his spare time. I think it must be "spoon-fed"; he must be oriented through specific courses. University life (or should I say "college life") is too full of athletics, fraternity activities, dances, "bull sessions," and countless other enjoyable distractions, all of which contribute to the "full man." I fail to see how the average young American male can possibly sandwich in a necessary complement of "cultural activities" in his spare time. Since these latter activities do not fall within the pattern set by the "group," and show less promise of immediate return in enjoyment, or increased social status on the campus, they are bound to suffer in competition with the more popular, "group" activities. No doubt much of the criticism levelled against arts colleges, namely, that the cultural courses are useless, is well taken, for the culture

Until recently porous bronzes have found many applications for self-lubricating bearings in the automotive, electrical, household appliance and general machine industries. The bulk of an annual production of several million pounds of copper powder had gone into the manufacture of these articles, of which by now more than a billion are in service. However, the war has brought severe curtailment of these bearings because of the scarcity of the two main constituents, copper and tin. The development of substitute materials of equal or superior properties has led to a large-scale replacement by products made from iron powder. In spite of the diminished interest in powdered copper-tin alloys caused by this trend, it was believed worth while to investigate some mechanical properties of these materials as a reference base for substitutes. In addition, experiments using the hot-press method were incorporated to investigate possibilities of saving vital equipment or opening new fields of applications. It must be assumed that by this time the powder metallurgy process of making porous bronzes, a development that found its first industrial applications more than 10 years ago, is well known in engineering. The patent literature and bibliography is volu- minous, most publications referring to porous, self-lubricating bronzes, containing about 10 per cent tin and I to 5 per cent graphite, with porosities in the range of 25 to 35 per cent.l-7 The excellent antifriction properties of these bearings, caused by the uniform impregnation with oil, are dependent on the interconnection of the pores and the uniform distribution of the graphite inclusions. The sintering mechanism of porous bronze, with its structural changes during the transformation of the metal powder into the sintered bearing has been shown in colored photomicrographs by Hall.* Diffusion between copper and tin was found to begin within one minute, when tin-rich transitory phases were formed. After 25 min. a homogeneous matrix of alpha was reached for an alloy containing 9.5 per cent tin and 6 per cent graphite. Price, Williams and Garrand,9 studying certain metal powder combinations in which sintering is accompanied by the cementing action of a liquid phase, including a 90-10 bronze sintered at 925°C., have found that if the treatment is carried out within the liquidus and solidus temperature range of the system, a peculiar process of alternate solution and precipitation occurs. The particles of the major solid constituent are dissolved in the minor liquid phase, but thereafter are reprecipi-tated on certain nuclei, which develop into large grains, usually rounded.

The Hasancelebi iron deposit in Eastern Turkey is a very low grade (average 20% oxide) magnetite body consisting of 720 million longtons of proven reserve at a 10% cut-off limit. The ore-bearing scapolitic oclcs cover an area of approximately 4300m x 300m, and the thickness of the outcropping deposit exceeds 300m. Prefeasibility project studies revealed that a one degree decrease in a 45° final slope angle of the proposed pit would require excavation of approximately 10 million cubic meters of excess waste material, for a projected pit bottom 300 meters below the valley floor. There- fore, determination of the final slope angles of the open pit was considered to be the most important task in the feasibility analysis of this project. In this investigation, the main emphasis was given to collection, compilation and evaluation of the engineering geological, hydrogeological and rock mechanics data of the highly fractured and weathered rocks. Due to the presence of intense fracturing, the rock wedge analysis method was used for projected 30m-high benches and the circular failure analysis method was used for the stability of the projected final pit slopes. The proposed bench slope angles ranged between 60° and 80°, whereas the projected final slope angles varied between 30° and 48°, depending on the slope heights and groundwater levels.

THE importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. The effect of alumina particles on the nucleation and growth of cracks through a silver- chloride matrzx has been investigated. It has been found possible to promote fibrous cracking in dispersion-strengthened silver, chloride under notch-impact conditions at temperatures at which silver chloride alone cleaves brittlely The modification) of fracture beIzavzor is thought to be due to the relaxation of hydrostatrc stress beneath a notch by the nucleation of cavities near alumina particles. In recent years, composite or dispersion-strengthened materials have been studied primarily to understand their high resistance to plastic flow particularly at elevated temperatures. Dislocation models have been developed with which it is possible to deduce with fair success the effects of interparticle distance, particle size, temperature, upon yielding and creep behavior.l-4 Much less attention has been paid to the fracture behavior of these materials (with the notable exception of common structural steels) and little is known experimentally about the manner in which inclusions affect the nucleation and growth of cracks through a matrix. Nevertheless a beginning has been made in connection with fibrous cracking in ductile matrices where inclusions appear to play an essential ro1e.5-7 During the severe localized plastic deformation which accompanies necking in a tensile test, cavities are believed to develop at inclusions; these cavities subsequently grow and coalesce by plastic flow until separation is complete. It is of interest to consider whether inclusions can affect fracture behavior under loading conditions which restrict the plasticity of the matrix itself (for example, cleavage under conditions of a high imposed strain rate at low temperatures). It is particularly interesting to study these effects in a solid which shows a spectrum of behavior ranging from fully ductile to semi-brittle behavior. Such a solid is silver chloride whose mechanical behavior depends sensitively upon temperature and strain rate.'," The present paper is concerned with a study of the influence of inclusions (in the form of alumina particles) on the fracture behavior of silver chloride loaded uniaxially at low strain rates at room temper- ature and also under notch impact conditions over a wide range of temperature. In particular, it will be shown that the alumina particles can exert a startling effect on the ductile-brittle transition temperature of notched silver chloride and that the magnitude and nature of the effect depends upon both the quantity of alumina and the shape of the alumina particles. 1. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1.1 Materials Used. Silver chloride powder of analytical reagent (AR) quality having an average particle size 6 was supplied by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works (st. Louis, MO.). Acid washed 900 mesh alumina powder, designated A38-900, was supplied by the Norton Co. (Cambridge, Mass.). This powder was added to silver chloride in two forms: a) the as-received condition in which the individual particles were of random irregular shape; their statistical average size was 7; b) in a condition in which each particle was spherically shaped by a fusion technique. In this case, the statistical average particle size determined with the optical microscope was approximately the same (about 5p) but electron micrographic evidence indicated that many ultra fine particles were present in the spheroidized powder. 1.2 Preparation of Composite Materials. Silver chloride-alumina composites containing 2.5, 5, and 15 pct by volume of alumina were produced by the extrusion of mechanically mixed powders blended in a ball mill for 24 hr at room temperature. The mixtures were compacted at 50,000 psi at room temperature in the form of billets 3/4 in. in diameter and 1 in. long which were then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio at 370°C through a radius-type steel die having a 5 deg lead-in angle. An extrusion temperature of 370°C was selected to ensure that all composites had sufficient plasticity to be extruded. Apart from this general requirement, the choice was arbitrary. 1.3 Microstructure of Composites. Attempts were made to check the distribution of alumina metallo-graphically by polishing transverse and longitudinal sections of the extruded rod. Specimens were wet-ground to 600 emery paper and lapped successively with 5 and 0.25-p grades of diamond paste. They were etched for 10 sec in 10 pct sodium thiosulfate solution and lightly polished in concentrated ammonium hydroxide. The most effective way to render the alumina particles and grain boundaries visible was to radiate the surface with intense white light to decorate the grain boundaries and the particle-matrix interfaces photolytically.

IN recent publications1-5 the existence and behavior of subgrain boundaries in high-purity metals has been clearly brought to light. Lacombe and Beaujardl by means of special etching methods disclosed in polycrystalline sheets of aluminum the existence of substructures differing in orientation by small amounts (about 1/4"). Boundaries of these structures at relatively high temperatures had the remarkable property' of moving about while the ordinary boundaries remained stationary. Cahn2 also observed substructures in bent and annealed single crystals of aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and rock salt. The position of subboundaries could be explained in terms of a dislocation mechanism of polygonization in which dislocations move into lines at right angles to the bent glide planes thereby relieving elastic stresses in these planes. Guinier and Tennevin8,6 disclosed the further interesting feature that polygonized structures coarsened significantly upon prolonged annealing. Somewhat similar subgrain phenomena have been observed in silicon iron of commercial purity. Although some evidence for the development of macro-mosaic structures in silicon iron already has been reported by one of the authors6,7 under the phenom-enological term "crystal recovery," much better evidence recently has been obtained due to improved etching techniques. In addition, phenomena regarding structural changes have been uncovered. The present investigation is divided into three parts: (1) The phenomenon of Laue spot sharpening on annealing cold-rolled crystals, (2) the phenomena of polygonization and subgrain coarsening The material used in the present investigation was high-grade commercial silicon iron sheet of nominal composition, 3.3 pct Si, 0.004 C, 0.011 P, 0.010 S, 0.04 Mn, 0.01 Al, 0.04 Cu, 0.01 Sn. Large single crystals of this material Were prepared for cold-rolling or bending as scheduled. Cold-rolling of 12 pct was carried out on a laboratory 8-in, diam rolling mill. Individual specimens were cut from the deformed crystals, and the cut edges were deeply etched prior to annealing. Laue photographs were made using 40-kv tungsten radiation. The technique used to disclose the various subboundaries was an electropolish and electroetch in a bath of chrome-acetic acid.' The anodic polishing done at 22 v was immediately followed by etching at a reduced voltage, which was dependent upon the nature of the subboundaries. Phenomenon of Laue Spot Sharpening on Annealing Cold-Rolled Crystals Fig. 1 gives the initial and final orientations of the specimens cold-rolled 12 pct. Each specimen was annealed at a temperature and for a time which caused significant structural changes as evidenced by alterations in Laue patterns. Representative Laue patterns and micrographs showing the essential changes are given in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The essential points to be derived from these illustrations follow: 1. Annealing at 950°C clearly develops a substructure with the orientation of the cold-rolled specimen. 2. The subboundaries formed obviously separate regions of nearly the same orientation. Some of the subboundaries appear as a sequence of dots similar to those observed in aluminum by Lacombe and Beaujard,' but whether this is due to extremely small differences in orientation is not known at present. 3. The substructure coarsens upon prolonged annealing. 4. Prolonged annealing also causes a decrease in orientation spread according to Laue spot sharpening'

EVERY mathematical statement of a measure of anything (as distin-guished from a count) is followed by a qualification always implied if not explicity stated--that the statement is only an estimate, which may vary from absolute accuracy within certain limits, according to the accu-racy of the measuring instrument. This basic fact, so obvious to engineers, is not so well understood by many that make use of laboratory coal tests. The tolerances that must be allowed in measurements of coal quality are very important in both their commercial and engineering applica-tions-and the significance of these tolerances depends upon the use made of the laboratory coal test. Only in recent years has there been any intensive study of this ques-tion of tolerances as applied to measurements of coal quality. There is very little in our published literature on the subject, and what has been published is not, readily comprehended by those who sell coal, or buy coal and use it, unless they happen to have made a study of the subject them-selves. There is great need for more widespread understanding of what has been discovered and how it applies to the use of laboratory coal tests. What follows is an attempt to condense into a few pages the results of the major investigations so far reported, and to explain their meaning in simple nontechnical language, with the addition of some recent illustrative experiments.

Deep drilling has led to the development of numerous pools which yield products consisting predominantly of natural gas accompanied by high-gravity water-white or slightly straw-colored liquid. Yields of this "condensate" or "distillate," as it is commonly called, vary from traces to over a hundred barrels per million cubic feet of gas. The fact that this liquid exists in the reservoir as an integral part of the gas phase and is formed by condensation attending simultaneous reduction of pressure and temperature after its entry into the well was apparently first recognized about 1932.l The nature of the physical phenomena involved in this condensation was clarified for the petroleum industry in 1933 by a report by Sage, Schaafsma, and Lacey2 of the results of an experimental investigation of the behavior of mixtures of methane and propane. Search of the literature has revealed that the condensation of liquid from gaseous mixtures by isothermal pressure reduction is not a new discovery. Kuenen was led by theoretical considerations to expect such a phenomenon, and in 1892 reported3 the results of experimental verification of his deductions. This was followed by a considerable amount of work on the phase relations of mixtures by Kuenen 4,5,6 and by 0thers,7,8 mostly in European universities. Since 1930 investigators in this country have reported experimental data on the properties and behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems."' It is now generally known that in the presence of natural gas the solubility in the gas phase of the heavier and normally liquid hydrocarbons increases rapidly with increasing pressure above 500 to 1000 Ib. per sq. in. Thus, at pressures of 2500 Ib. per sq. in. or higher a gas may contain appreciable quantities of hydrocarbons with normal boiling points as high as 6o0°F., which in turn may be condensed from the gas phase by the reduction of their solubility therein attending pressure reduc-tion. The combined effects of pressure and temperature on condensation and vaporiza-tioi of mixtures are most readily visualized by the study of phase diagrams. Since the construction, application, and interpreta-tion of such diagrams have been described fully in readily available literature, 18-20 this paper will not review the theoretical aspects of this subject. While the behavior of gas-distillate sys tems is now clearly understood, at least in a qualitative way, most of the published work deals with the results of laboratory studies of binary systems or of synthetic mixtures of hydrocarbons, and although several systematic investigations of the effects of separator pressure and temperature on the yields of liquid product from gas-distillate wells have been made21,12z it appears that in all cases the limitations have precluded the construction of even approximately complete phase diagrams for naturally occurring systems. AS PREVIOUSLY announced, the semi-centennial meeting of the Institute is to be held at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Sept. 12, 13, 14, and 15. An interesting program of technical sessions and excursions is now being prepared by the Local Committee. At the time of going to press the program had not been completed in sufficient detail to permit its being pub¬lished in this number. The detailed program will be published in the September MINING AND METALLURGY, which will be printed in time to be distributed before the Wilkes-Barre Meeting. It may be said in advance, however, that the Com¬mittee has progressed so far in its work that we are assured of one of the -most notable meetings the Insti¬tute has held and that members will miss a rare .treat if they do not attend. The many trips and excursions, as well as the banquet, will be -given to the members as a compliment from the members of the Local Com¬mittee. . . The paper by Howard Eavenson on the Lynch Plant of -the United States Coal and Coke Co. will be illustrated by lantern slides and moving pictures. One of the most appropriate discussions will be that opened by Prof. J. F. Kemp on the Stratigraphy of the Anthracite Region; this also will be amply illustrated.
