Some years ago we collated all laboratory data then available to us on the distribution at equilibrium of manganese and of sulphur between metal and simple slags, and used the results in setting up an equation, which proved to be in accord with determinations of the distribution ratio of manganese and of sulphur between liquid steel and open-hearth slag, over a wide range of operating conditions. We now present an outline of our calculations and inferences on these two closely related questions, which are of especial importance because of the advisability of conserving manganese wherever possible. In general, our results show that in the open-hearth furnace equilibrium between metal and slag, with respect to both manganese and sulphur, is substantially attained during the finishing period of the heat, or in about a half hour to an hour after any additions were made. This implies that the end result will be identical whether manganese is added as alloy or metal to the liquid steel or as oxide to the slag. The proportion of total manganese retained by the steel is favored: (I) by use of the minimum amount of lime, consistent with other operating limitations, required to give a lime-silica ratio of about 2.4, which usually corresponds to a minimum practical slag volume; (2) by a high concentration in the slag of MnO relative to FeO; (3) by high operating temperature. Absorption of sulphur by the slag from the liquid metal is favored: (I) by large slag volume; (2) by a high concentration of active (or "free") lime and of manganese oxide dissolved in the slag; (3) by low concentration of silica, iron oxide, and phosphate dissolved in the slag. The activity of each of the several components, although it is not known precisely, is approximately equal to the concentration of each component expressed as its mol fraction; that is, as the ratio of the number of mols of the given component to the total number of mols of all the molecular species present in the metal or slag, as the case may be. WHEN metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Langenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,1 Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

The theory of the Askania mag-netometer, as well as a complete discussion of all factors influencing magnetometer readings, is very ably described by J. Wallace Joyce.1 We will assume that the reader is thoroughly familiar with this theory and we will use whenever possible the same notations for the physical values involved in the theory. On the other hand, we believe that the principal formulas of the magnetometer can be deduced much more easily by the use of differential calculus than by the methods employed by Joyce. Consequently, we are presenting herewith a resumé of the theory of the vertical magnetometer in order to determine the correct formula of the temperature coefficient which we propose to compensate. Short Theory of the Vertical Magnetometers We shall accept the following notations: m = total mass of the magnet system, in grams. g = acceleration of gravity, in dynes. a = projection on the axis of the magnet system of the distance between the axis of support and the center of gravity of the magnet system, in centimeters. h = projection on the perpendicular to the axis of the magnet system of the distance between the axis of support and the center of gravity of the magnet system, in centimeters. M = 2pL = M, magnetic moment of the magnet system. Z = vertical component of the earth's magnetic field. ? = deflection angle of the magnet system. = focal length of objective lens in the optical system S = scale reading. In a vertical magnetometer the axis of the magnet system is kept horizontal within 2". Therefore, referring to Fig 1, we see that the magnetic torque of the magnet system influenced by Z must be counterbalanced by the gravity torque. The writer has been unable to find much information relative to tests made to determine the effect of forging on the specific density of steel. The opinion, however, among men engaged in the business, seems to be that forging greatly compresses or consolidates the steel. While such is doubtless the case with spongy or porous steel, the following experiments indicate that there can be little or no change in the density with steel initially free from cavities. Ten ingots of basic open-hearth steel cast as shown in Fig. 1 were used in the experiments. All the specimens were 0.53 carbon with all other elements the same, the analysis being determined from drillings taken midway between the center and outside of the upper end, as shown in Fig. 2. The specimens were selected from over one thousand ingots so that the tests could be comparative for the work done in forging only, but no two of the ingots were cast in the same heat. Each ingot remained in the mold approximately 30 min., when it was removed and sir-cooled. About 12 hr. later, when the temperature had been reduced to approximately that of the surrounding atmosphere, the head was discarded and the ingot heated in an oil furnace to approximately 2250" F. (1235" C). Approximately 1 min. was required to forge under the steam hammer to 1 1/4 in. (31.75 mm.), rough diameter, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. All ingots were allowed to air-cool after forging. Cylinders 1/2 in. (17.7 mm.) in diameter and 1/2 in. high were then turned from the forged and unforged parts of the ingots and numbered. The ten pairs of specimens were submitted to Louis E. Endsley, Professor of Railway Mechanical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh; A. N. Talbot, Professor of Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois; L. Z. Slater, chief chemist, Scullin Steel Co., St. Louis, Mo. NO information was furnished as to which specimens were forged or unforged and each laboratory used the same specimens, submitting the average of three independent determinations, a tabulation of which is shown in the accompanying table in which the laboratories are designated by the letters A, B, and C. The apparent activation energy, U, JOY plastic deformation of aluminium, copper, and gold single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum was found to he dependent upon surface condition. At low strains, the value for U for aluminum single crystals was 4200 cal per mole ; however, this value decreased to 920 cal per mole when the specimens were polished during the test at a rate of 50 X 10-5 win-1 The activated volume also was found to increase with the rate of metal removal. That the surface plays an important role in plastic-deformation processes has been adequately demonstrated.1-4 Of particular interest at this time are the observations4 that the creep rate of single crystals of fee metals is increased markedly when specimens are polished during the deformation process. These observations were interpreted in terms of a dislocation debris layer at the surface regions of the crystal. This layer, which appears to be a region containing a high concentration of dislocations or segments of dislocations, not only will impede the egress of dislocations on the primary slip system, but will also provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. By this means, a stress which opposes the motion of dislocations will be generated. It is considered that this stress must be taken into account in any theory which describes the plastic-deformation process. Although a detailed dislocation model cannot be given at this time, it may be stated that the stresses opposing the motion of dislocations arise from the dislocations in the debris layer, Ts, and ti due to the resistance to motion imposed by internal obstacles such as Lomer-Cottrell barriers, subgrain and grain boundaries, forest dislocations, and so forth, as well as the resistance due to the presence of jogs on dislocations and the interaction of the stress fields of dislocations, and so forth. In essence, we have added an additional term, ts, to the usual form of the equation T = Ta- Tb, where Tb is the back stress due to the various types of obstacles which impede the motion of dislocation. Accordingly, the net stress, t, acting on a dislocation may be written as where Ta is the applied shear stress. For deformation which occurs by a thermally activated process5,8 ?=Ae-u/kT = A e(u,-VT)/kT [2] and U = Uo- Vt PI where U = activation energy for plastic flow, y = shear strain rate, Uo = activated energy for plastic deformation in the absence of stress and depends upon the particular deformation process, V = activated volume, k = Boltzmann constant, T = temperature, OK, and A = frequency factor. From Eqs. [I] and [3], U = Uo- V(Ta - Ti - TS) [4] and it is seen that if Ts decreases, the activation energy, U, must decrease if V remains constant. However, as will be shown, V is a function of the surface conditions. In their work on aluminum, Lytton and coworkers7 reported that at low strains the activation energy was 3400 cal per mole and at high strains it was 28,000 cal per mole. The lower value was interpreted in terms of the energy necessary to overcome the Peierls force, while the higher value was associated with the energy necessary for dislocations to move by a cross-slip process. It will be shown that the lower activation energy is associated with the surface debris layer rather than with the Peierls force. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals having a nominal cross section of 1/8 in. and a 3-in. gage length were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The initial purity of the metals was 99.997, 99.999, and 99.999 pet for aluminum, copper, and gold, respectively. The orientation of the specimens is given in Fig. 1. Thin films of tungsten 077 n-type germanium, silicon, and gallium arsenide were obtained by reacting tungsten hexafluoride with the semiconductor surface in an argom atmosplrere at temperatures between 325° and 400° C. Capacity-voltage, current-iloltage, and photoelectric measurements were used to investigate the characteristics of the tungsten -semiconductor diodes thus Produced. The junctions are shown to he very close to ideal Schottky barlp/ers with barrier heights measured with respect to the Fermi energy of 0.18, 0.65, and 0.78 1.1 jar W-Ge, W-Si, and W-GaAs, respectively. The electrical properties of the W-Si interface show no deterioration when heated to 1000°C in dry forming gas for 5 min. A theoretical value of the Richardson constant, A, appropriate to the semiconductor-hand structure has been used in evaluating the current-voltage characteristics. ThE W-Si surface-barrier diode was initially proposed for investigation because the eutectic temperature with silicon (1400°C) is much higher than that in the Si-Au system 1370°C).1 This would permit more flexibility in heat treatment and possibly provide greater reliability at elevated temperatures. The lower work function of tungsten (4.54 ev)2 compared with that of gold (4.78 ev)3 also suggested that a lower barrier height would be obtained with tungsten and hence a lower forward bias and lower minority carrier injection ratio for a given current density. The investigation was extended to include the characterization of W-Ge md W-GaAs surface-barrier diodes. The tungsten films have been produced by reacting WF6 with germanium, silicon, and GaAs surfaces in an argon atmosphere at temperatures from 300° to 500°C.4 This process is a very satisfactory alternative to the relatively difficult process of evaporating tungsten films in vacuo. To ensure an adequate electrical characterization of the tungsten-semiconductor interface, three types of barrier-height measurements have been performed. The mutually consistent results obtained lead to the conclusion that the tungsten-semiconductor junctions are indeed of the Schottky type. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used for producing tungsten films is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of an argon carrier gas line to which metered amounts of tungsten hexafluoride can be rapidly added. The mixture passes through a heated reaction tube containing the semiconductor slices and is exhausted to a hood. The argon is purified by passage through a 6-in. column of titanium turnings maintained at 800°C. The tungsten hexafluoride dispensing arrangement was designed by V. C. Garbarini and W. R. Bracht.4 A measured amount of liquid tungsten hexafluoride is injected into the argon stream and vaporizes. The mixture passes through a sodium fluoride absorption cell to remove traces of hydrogen fluoride, then into the nickel reaction tube. The tube is 12 in. long with an inside diameter of 1/2 in. The center section is heated by a furnace of the self-supporting wire-filament type. It was chosen for its rapid heatup and cooling. The wall thickness is 10 mils except for a 3-in. hot zone which is 30 mils thick to reduce thermal gradients along the length. The samples to be coated are placed on a sapphire plate and centered in this section. The tungsten is deposited with the following sequential steps: the loaded reaction tube is flushed with argon at a rate of 500 cu cm per min and heated to 370°C. Then 0.45 g of liquid tungsten hexafluoride is injected into the argon stream. The samples are held at this temperature for 2 min. The tube and samples are then cooled to room temperature and the samples removed. Tungsten films were grown on (111) faces of silicon and germanium polished with Linde A abrasive and lightly etched with HF-HNO3. The GaAs surfaces were (100) faces chemically polished with a H2SO4-H2O2 solution. The films have typical sheet resistances of 0.2, 8, and 15 52/0 when grown on germanium, silicon, and GaAs, respectively. After the tungsten deposition, ohmic contacts were alloyed on the back surfaces of the wafers. Ohmic contacts to the germanium and silicon were obtained by alloying Au-Sb at 370°C, ohmic con-

Pvestrained Ferrovac E iron has been neutron-irradiated at approximately 90°C to an integrated flux of 1020 nut (E > 0.82 mev]. The irradiation was found to produce an incveased temperature dependence of the flow stress in addition to a greatly increased athemal stress. Measurements of the flow stress and stress relaxation, from which the activation volume and activation energy for slip were deduced, show that neutron irradiation changes the rate -controlling slip process to one based on dislocation interactions with tetragonal distortions which are Produced around submicroscopic interstitial loops in the lattice. The study indicates that without prestraining prior to irradiation the chances of detecting a change in the rate -controlling slip process are greatly reduced because in the initial stages of slip a substantial fraction of the radiation defects are swept out of the slip plane by gliding dislocations. Thus, activation parameters which are subsequently measured are representative of a greatly reduced defect density and would not differ appreciably from those for unirradi-ated material. The large increase in the athermal component of the flow stress is probably connected with the presence of depleted zones in the lattice which are introduced by irradiation. ALTHOUGH fast neutron-irradiation has not been observed to markedly alter the activation parameters for slip in bcc metals,' small but significant changes do occur. Most experimenters agree that irradiation predominantly increases the athermal component of the yield stress.'-= In addition to this, Laidler and smidt7 have shown that in iron irradiated to 5 X 10" nvt and molybdenum irradiated to 10" nvt, changes occur in the activation volumes for slip. A similar conclusion has been reached by Milasin and Malkin8 for irradiated iron. Work by Ohr et a1.5 shows that for Ferrovac E iron, irradiated to 1.2 X 1016 nvt, small increases in the activation energy for slip also occur. So far these changes in the activation parameters have not been explained on a firm theoretical basis. One important factor which would minimize the chances of detecting a change in the slip mechanism upon irradiation is the presence of "channeling" which has been observed in molybdenum,9 niobium,10 and iron.11These channels are formed by gliding dislocations which sweep irradiation defects out of the active slip planes and thereby create zones in which continued dislocation motion is encouraged. The activation parameters for the dislocations gliding in the defect-free channels would, therefore, be similar to those for unirradiated iron and a change in the rate-controlling slip process would be difficult to detect. In the present work, an attempt has been made to reduce the effect of uneven deformation on the measured activation parameters for slip in neutron-irradiated Ferrovac E iron polycrystals, so that a more realistic assessment of the effects of neutron-irradiation could be made. Primarily, the experiments involve the irradiation of specimens which had been prestrained to 9 pct elongation at room temperature prior to insertion into the reactor. It was hoped that the introduction of a large number of evenly distributed dislocations would substantially decrease any channeling effect which might otherwise occur. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting material was vacuum-melted Ferrovac E iron, an analysis of which is given in Table I. The standard tensile specimen had a gage length of 1.125 in., a cross-sectional diameter of 0.120 in., and a re-crystallized grain size of 1.2 x 10-3 in. All tensile tests were conducted on a floor model "Instron" tensile machine at a strain rate of 3 x 10-4 per sec. The irradiation of the prestrained specimens was performed in the Brookhaven High Flux Beam Reactor to an integrated flux of 1020 nvt (E > 0.82 mev) at a temperature of about 90°C. All specimens were excap-sulated in high-purity aluminum sheaths which were lightly swaged around the samples to ensure good thermal contact. Subsequent measurements on the irradiated specimens showed that within experimental accuracy the swaging had not deformed them. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the flow stresses for a series of unirradiated control samples. Phase equilibria in the Ti-Mn-Mo system have been investigated in the composition range 100 to 60 pct Ti and in the temperature range 550 to 1150°C. Three out of ten isothermal sections are presented as well as seven vertical sections, projections of the beta space and the surface of incipient melting. A STUDY of the system Ti-Mn-Mo was undertaken as part of a program to aid in the development of titanium-base phase equilibrium diagrams of potential technical importance to alloy development. The scope of the investigation included the composition range 100 to 60 wt pct Ti (all compositions refer to weight percentages) and the temperature range 550" to 1150°C. A surface of incipient melting was constructed from measurements of a large number of alloys. In the binary system Ti-Mo,' the high temperature modification of titanium generally spoken of as the p phase is stabilized to successively lower temperatures with increasing alloy content. There are no known intermediate phases, and complete miscibility exists between body-centered cubic titanium and molybdenum. The u solid solution is limited to less than 0.8 pct Mo at temperatures between 885" and 600°C. An equilibrium diagram for the binary system Ti-Mn has been published.' Manganese behaves as a p stabilizer but undergoes a eutectoid transformation at about 20 pct Mn and 550°C to a plus an intermediate phase. The structure of this phase has been found to be isomorphous with the a phase FeCr." Accordingly, the phase is assigned the formula TiMn, although its actual location on the composition scale has not been determined and may well be not exactly at the equiatomic composition. In disagreement with ref. 2, the origin of the TiMn phase has been shown' to be a peritectoid transformation at a temperature between 900" and 1000°C. A second intermediate phase occurs at the atomic proportions TiMn,. The structure of this phase was originally established by Wallbaum" as having a hexagonal lattice (C 14 type, 12 atoms per unit cell) isomorphous with MgZn,. In this work, the structure determination was confirmed and lattice parameters determined to be: a = 4.815 kX, c - 7.901 kX. Because of the extensive range of the P phase, the ternary system was suited to the determination of the phase boundaries by the parametric method of Andersen and Jette." During the course of the investigation, this method was found applicable only to the P/a+P boundaries but not to P/P+ compound boundaries. Metallographic methods were used alternatively for delineating these phase boundaries. Preparation and Treatment of Alloys Over 70 alloys were prepared for the study of this system. Ten gram alloy buttons were arc melted in a nonconsumable electrode furnace using inert atmosphere protection, and a water cooled copper crucible. The construction and operation of this type of melting unit has been described.' To insure complete solution of alloy additions, especially molybdenum, the buttons were remelted alternately on top or bottom as many as five times. This was accomplished by a suitable mechanism for "flipping" the ingots over. It was very difficult to obtain homogeneous melts in the region of less than 75 pct Ti because of the very high melting point of molybdenum and Ti-Mo master alloys and the comparatively low boiling point of manganese. Structures produced upon solidification of the eu-tectic composition (33 wt pct Cu) aluminum copper alloy have been examined as a function of freezing rate dfs /d? , the rate of change of fraction solid (fs) with time (8). Slow (dfs/d? = 0.0016 sec-1), intermediate (dfs/d? = 0.02 sec-1) and rapid (dfs/d? = 0.4 to 7.30 sec-1) freezing rates were used. The lamellar Al-Cual2 eutectic is arranged in the form of rod-shaped colonies at rapid freezing rates. The colonies are aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow, whereas the lamellae within the colonies are aligned at various angles, as high as 90 deg, to the direction of heat flow. The colony spacing (C) is proportional to the square root of inverse freezihg rate. The relationship is C = 15.5(dfs/d?)-1/2 where C is in µ and 8 is in sec. The ratio of colony spacing to lamellar spacing is greater than 20.0 and increases with a decrease in the freezing rate. A duplex dendritic structure is produced at intermediate freezing rates. A fine lamellar eutectic is arranged within the dendrites (exhibiting side branches at an angle close to 60 deg from the main stem) and a coarse irregular eutectic appears in the interdendritic regions. The duplex eutectic structure is also produced at slow freezing rates. However, at slow freezing rates there is a Platelat of CuAl2, along the center of the main stem of each dendrite and the other lamellae are arranged perpendicular to the central platelet. THE eutectic between CuA12 and a! aluminum has been reported to freeze in a lamellar form by several workers.'-3 chadwick4 has measured the interlamel-lar spacing as a function of growth rate. Kraft and Albright2 have reported on irregularities in the lamellar structures, and have proposed growth models which account for the formation of faults during solidification. In certain instances the lamellar eutectic has been found to exist in colonies. The colony formation315 has been attributed to the breakdown of a planar liquid-solid interface due to rejection of impurities. The aim of the present work is to study the structures produced from the eutectic aluminum-copper alloy under relatively fast solidification rates, such as encountered in casting and welding operations. The solid-liquid interface presumably remains planar under conditions of slow unidirectional freezing which produce lamellae aligned parallel to the direction of heat flow. The local growth velocities are the same over the entire interface and are equal to the rate of growth of the all-solid region. The spacing between the eutectic lamellae is inversely proportional to the square root of the growth rate of the all-solid region. Under the freezing conditions used in the present study, the solid-liquid interface is cellular or dendritic and the local growth velocities are different in the different regions of the interface. The relationship between the growth rate of the all solid region and the local growth velocities varies with the location and the shape of the interface. The growth rate of the all-solid region is, therefore, an inadequate parameter to describe the eutectic micro-structures which depend upon the local growth velocities. For this reason the structures have been examined as a function of freezing rate, dfs/d?, where fs is the fraction solidified at time 0. The freezing rate was varied by a factor of 4000. The relationship between the freezing rate, dfs/d?, and the growth velocit of the all solid region depends upon the specimen geometry and the shape of the interface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The A1-33 pct Cu alloy used throughout this study was made in an induction furnace, using electrolytic copper and aluminum of commercial purity (99.7 pct), the primary impurities being silicon (0.12 pct), iron (0.14 pct), and zinc (0.02 pct). Three ranges of freezing rates were investigated: 1) A spectrum of rapid freezing rates (ranging from 0.40 to 7.30 sec-1) was obtained in arc deposits made on 2-in. thick cast plates of the eutectic alloy. The arc was operated at constant power and was made to travel at constant velocity on the surface of the plate that was in contact with the chill surface during solidification. The pool of liquid metal formed under the moving tungsten arc solidified rapidly by heat extraction through the unmelted plate. Conditions of unidirectional heat flow were achieved near the fusion zone interface, especially in the center of the arc deposits. The great advantage of the arc technique is that rapid cooling and freezing rates can be varied in a qualitative way. The correlation between the arc parameters and the solidification rate is given by the following relationship:6-8

Oil Co., completed on April 12 in the San Joaquin valley about four miles west of Wasco, Calif. It penetrated the earth's crust to a depth of 15,004 ft.- almost three miles-a depth that exceeds by over 2200 ft. that of the previous record holder in western Texas. It is now producing oil from sands at a depth from 13,092 to 13,- 175 ft., which is about 1500 ft. deeper than the record formerly achieved in Louisiana. Continental's new well was bottomed in what is possibly Domengine-Avenal Eocene sand, and is producing from the Middle Miocene equivalent to the Rio Bravo sand.

Activation of sphalerite with silver ions results from the exchange of two Ag ions for one Zn ion in the sphalerite lattice. The exchange is proportional to the logarithm of time and proceeds until either of the reactants is consumed. Sodium cyanide prevents the activation of sphalerite by controlling the ratio [Zn++]/[Ag+]' in solution. If sphalerite has already been activated with excess silver, cyanide ions can deactivate sphalerite provided oxygen is present. SOLUBLE: silver salts are effective activators for flotation of sphalerite with potassium ethyl xan-thate as collector.* Since sphalerite takes up large quantities of silver ions rapidly,2-4 investigation of this system appeared fruitful for studying the mechanism of sphalerite activation and deactivation. Experimental data presented here comprise studies of the mechanism and rates of activation and deactivation of sphalerite with silver and cyanide ions. A 20-lb sample of sphalerite from Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was handpicked, crushed, screened, hy-drosized to produce a 65/100-mesh fraction, and purified by electrostatic separation. The sphalerite was then leached with benzene and absolute ethyl alcohol to remove possible organic contaminants and with 0.1 M NaCN to remove any copper that might have been picked up during screening. The benzene had been specially purified by grinding with fine sphalerite for 12 hr to remove trace impurities that might have had a specific affinity for sphalerite. Ii'inally, the mineral was washed, dried in flowing nitrogen, and stored in large ground-glass stoppered weighing bottles under a small nitrogen pressure. The specific surface of two samples from the 65/100-mesh sphalerite stock, measured by krypton gas adsorption," was 420 cm2 per g. Compared with spheres of the same size and specific gravity, the prepared mineral had five times as much surface. Results of a wet chemical analysis and of a spectro-graphic study are given in Table I. Manganese, nickel, tin, indium, thallium, cobalt, and magnesium were not detected spectrographically. All solutions were preparid by -adding reagent-grade chemicals to conductivitv water. which had been previously saturated with the desired gases. Nitrogen and oxygen were purified, but no attempt was made to purify the laboratory air. Radioanalysis was carried out with prepurified Ag110 tracer obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The complete decay scheme for Ae is complex. Its primary emissions are 0.09 and 0.55 mev ß rays and 1.48 mev y raysB and its half-life is believed to be 270 days. In preparation of solutions of AgNO3, the amount of Ag110 added was negligible compared to that of the inert silver. Abstraction of silver from solution by sphalerite was measured after agitation of 1.5 g sphalerite with 20 ml of solution in 50-ml pyrex flasks. All sample preparations were carried out in a dry box so that the proper atmosphere could be maintained. After the mineral had been agitated in the silver nitrate solution, an aliquot of the solution and a sample of the wet mineral were transferred to separate counting vials and weighed. The solid sample was dried and re-weighed and the activity in both vials measured by means of a scintillation counter. With scintillation counting it is possible to count y radiation from the solid and liquid, a distinct advantage over the older ß-ray counting techdiques.4 All measurements of silver activity were made using a sodium-iodide well-type scintillation counter. The amount of zinc in solution was measured colorimet-rically by the monocolor method of Sandell.7 Activation Studies Exchange Between Zinc Ions and Silver Ions During Activation: The increase of Zn++ in solution during activation with Ag+ is shown in Table 11. These data indicate a replacement of one Zn++ by two Ag+. Analysis of a separate two-month agitation test indicated that the replacement of Zn++ by Ag+ was, as expected, in the molar ratio of 2.0.

Densities of melts of the iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum hubble pressure method in the composition range O to 37 wt pct SiOz and the temperature range 1255 to 1410C. The constitution of the melts is discussed and it is postulated that the structure changes from a dislribution of iron ions in an oxygen ion network at pure "FeO" to a distribution. of iron ions in a network of silicate tetrahedra at the orthosilicate composition. ISD The system iron oxide-silica is an important one metallurgically because it forms the basis of several complex slag systems in use for industrial smelting and refining processes. In recent years considerable work has been done on liquids of this system but there are still many points of difference among workers using different experimental techniques and theoretical approaches. Phase equilibria/"3 activity,4-6 electrical conductivity,' current efficiency,' transference number,8 viscosity,9 surface tension,'' and density" measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem. Measurement of density is one procedure which is directly indicative of liquid structure since any deviation from ideality must be a result of structural interactions. Liquids of the iron oxide-silica system are of special interest because this is one of the few metal oxide-silica systems on which measurements can be carried out conveniently over the entire composition range from pure oxide to silica saturation. This includes the range of high basicity which has received relatively little attention in other systems. Although one investigation of density in this system has previously been undertaken," the results seem of sufficient importance to warrant the independent redeter-mination reported here.

Earlier work1-4 has shown that commercial mild steels under static loading at the lowest natural operating temperatures fracture in a brittle manner only when damaged by a suitable history of straining. Notched and then compressed plates have fractured in subsequent tension at loads as low as 10 pct of the limit load and precompressed smooth bars at a subsequent extensional strain as low as 0.01. The comparison of the average net fracture stress with the flow limit stress was shown to be an excellent criterion of brittle or ductile behavior of mild steel structures when only loads and general stress levels are known. The present investigation shows that the deformation at fracture is a far more sensitive measure of brittleness than the fracture stress. Both criteria, deformation and stress, are used to determine the amount of uniform precompression of two mild steels, ABS-B and Project E-steel, resulting in brittle fracture under the strong constraint of a subsequently machined severe circumferential groove. The fracture stress equaled or exceeded the theoretical flow limit Ól = 2.680., ('based on the elevated yield stress at each prestrain) up to prestrains of about 0.20 and then fell off to about 1 at prestrains of 0.60. Yet a prestrain of only 0.05 reduced the elongation at the shoulders by a factor of about 4. The total plastic elongation of a region surrounding a sharp notch in prestrained steel deternines whether or not fracture will be initiated in large structures, hence is a direct and realistic measure of the remaining ductility and provides an excellent test of the material's resistance to embrittlement. ALMOST all engineering structures of mild steel which failed in service in a so-called "brittle" manner exhibited appreciable local plastic deformation (more than 1 pct) and a mixture of "cleavage" and "shear" fracture surfaces. Furthermore, the peak local stress in an advancing crack is always high. Such simple criteria as pure cleavage, absence of plasticity, or fracture stress, so useful in other fields, are insufficient to characterize brittleness in engineering structures at ordnary temperatures. The "brittle)' behavior of engineering structures is caused by the limited ductility at cracks or notch regions, as shown by recent work at Brown University summarized and extended in Refs. 1 to 4. It was also shown that the local ductility of mild steel may be catastrophically reduced by a suitable strain and temperature history similar to those which may occur in real structures. Localized yielding begins at the notch roots at low loads but is contained by surrounding elastic regions. The plastic strains are hence small. They increase slowly with the load up to the flow limit or limit load for an ideally plastic material. Unrestricted plastic flow then occurs. At such strains the real material locally st rain-hardens and fractures. With work-hardening materials no flow limit exists, and the transition from low to high plastic strains is gradual but increases more rapidly at loads close to the flow limit of an equivalent perfectly plastic material. When the available ductility is sufficient for reaching the limit load, the behavior is normal or "ductile". With insufficient ductility, fracture will occur at a low load and will be defined as "brittle". Accordingly the sufficiency or not of the ductility at a notch is reflected in the magnitude of the fracture load or average net stress as compared with the limit load or flow limit. The application of this criterion gave surprising results. Service failures under semistatic loading occurred mostly below the limit load, hence were "brittle". On the contrary all static tests with undamaged commercial mild steels reached the limit load in spite of the deepest notches and temperatures below Charpy impact transition (say about -30°F or higher). Notched bars showed no brittleness even under fully dynamic axial loading up to 1.5 x107 psi per sec at -23°F and about 2.5 x l06 psi per sec at -ll0°F, but broke in a brittle manner at -200°F and l03 psi per sec.' To propagate a fracture at low load, experimenters had to trigger it by superimposing a strong dynamic impact at a notch cooled by liquid nitrogen as in the Robertson5 or Esso tests.' Once started the cracks would run through warmer regions of smaller stress. Obviously the ductility of the apparently undamaged commercial steels was "sufficient" in the laboratory tests but not in the service fracture, where it must have been reduced by some embrittling procedure of fabrication or service. These conclusions were confirmed by the achievement of low static stress (brittle) fracture initiation in unwelded steel after a local reduction of ductility by simple prestraining. Symmetrically notched plates of undamaged mild steel cooled below the Charpy V-notch transition range were tested in central static tension: Undamaged plates withstood loads of limit intensity, but when subjected to prior in-plane com-pressive prestraining perpendicular to the notch axis and to accelerated aging, the plates fractured completely or partially at very low static loads, as low as one-tenth of the flow limit.2-4 However, damage could not be easily related to the strongly variable prestrain around a sharp notch. SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.
