With only one or two exceptions, all of these committees made reports at the New York meeting of the Institute, in February of this year, abstracts of which follow.

FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. This discussion concerns fitting an ellipse to angle, where the permeability k is measured for a series of plugs cut from varying angles in the horizontal plane. The conclusions and procedures given by Greenkorn, et al. are in no way affected by these comments, since the degree of anisotropy (ratio of maximum to minimum permeabilities) they found is generally quite close to one (see their Table A-1). However, since large anisotropies may arise, I feel that the comments should be made. Both Marcusl and Scheidegger2 have shown that there are two limiting expressions for the permeability of an unbounded anisotropic media. If the permeability is measured in the direction of the pressure gradient, the result is equivalent to the author's Eq. 11. This is the equation used to find kl1 and k22 from the experimental data. If, however, the permeability is measured in the direction of flow, then the resulting equation for the measured permeability is From these equations it follows that plots on angle will be ellipses. The principal axes will correspond with the major and minor permeability axes. The question arises as to what permeability is actually being measured on an anisotropic sample in the laboratory. An overall pressure gradient and a gross flow rate are determined and a permeability calculated by Darcy's law. The details of the macroscopic flow within the sample will be determined by the boundary conditions of the sample and the orientation and magnitude of the major and minor permeability axes. The situation is shown in Fig. 1 for the two-dimensional case. Using the method of conformal mapping, Marcusl has solved the problem of determining the overall apparent (or measured) permeability for this experiment for any condition of W-L ratios and orientation and magnitude of the principle permeability axes. For W-L ratios approaching zero, the streamlines are all forced by the boundary conditions to be in the direction of the measured permeability which is equal to kg. ONE of the chief hindrances to an understanding of the hardness of solid solutions is the sparsity of suitable hardness data. There is great need of a large body of hardness data obtained from many different alloys of high purity by identical testing methods and corrected to correspond to a single grain size. A considerable amount of such data has been obtained by means of the Meyer analysis on copper-rich and silver-rich solid solutions. There are enough of these data to permit comparison of numerous alloys at equal solute concentration in these two solvents, but only in a few cases is it possible to construct hardness-concentration curves for any given alloy. Therefore additional hardness work on most of these alloys is desirable. The primary solid solutions of silver with cadmium, indium, tin, or antimony as solute are of special interest, since all elements are from the same period of the periodic table and since, as shown previously,1 the hardening effect of equal percentages of these solutes is proportional to the lattice expansion produced by them. This paper presents the relation between hardness and concentration in the silver-antimony system from very dilute to nearly saturated solutions of antimony in silver. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were made from silver, 99.99 per cent pure, and antimony, 99.975 per cent pure. Silver and antimony were placed in graphite crucibles that had an ash content of less than 0.75 per cent. These metals were melted and allowed to solidify in a vacuum, which, after melting was complete, was usually equivalent to 3 mm. Of mercury. A high-frequency furnace was used. The ingots so obtained were worked and annealed to lessen segregation and to control grain size. Annealing was done in evacuated and sealed glass tubes. Hardness measurements on specimens from these ingots were by means of the Meyer analysis.3,4 Using a 4-mm.. ball, impressions were made under seven loads from 25 to 400 kg. The diameter of impression made under each load was measured. This enabled calculation of the constants in the well-known formula of Meyer. Katz and their associates on the heavier natural gases has provided better bases for the needed corrections, and the present charts. which are based largely on their work, are intended to simplify the computations involved. The design of the charts has been changed by plotting temperatures as a function of pressure and correction factor, on a semilogarithmic or "ratio" grid, which gives fairly even spacing of the graphs and simplifies interpolation. Charts have been prepared for natural gas with specific gravities of .60, .65, .70, .75 and .80. The word asbestos is a broad term that has been accepted and applied to a number of fibrous mineral silicates found in nature. They are incombustible and can be separated by mechanical means into fibers of various lengths and thicknesses, but differ in chemical composition and other properties. It is generally recognized that there are six varieties of asbestos; the finely fibrous form of serpentine known as chrysotile, and five minerals of the amphibole group, i.e., amosite (not fully recognized as a mineral species name but accepted in asbestos terminology), anthophyllite, crocidolite, tremolite and actinolite. (Figs 1-4.) Physical and Other Properties The structures of asbestos fibers have been studied intensely in recent years. X-ray diffraction patterns 1 to 15 have been used as a means of identification and classification. The amphibole group structures have been fairly well established while the serpentine group has been the subject of many investigations during the past six years. Low-angle X-ray scattering techniques5 have shown that the chrysotile fibrils are "hexagonally close packed" and parallel to each other, having cross-sectional diameters varying from 180Å* units to 300Å units, while the amphibole fibers are many times larger in cross section. The electron micrographs of chrysotile asbestos (Figs 1-4) have also indicated that the fibrils might be in the form of a hollow tube. This point has been the subject of considerable controversy by a number of investigators.7 to 16 Density measurements17 made on a sample of high quality Arizona fiber did not indicate that the fiber had a hollow tube structure; however, the so-called "sheet structure" of the fibril could be distorted in such a way that it gives the appearance of a hollow tube in the electron microscope. It is of interest to quote one investigator, F. L. Pundsack,17 in this connection: Although the empirical composition of chrysotile is 3MgO.2SiO2.2H20, the true unit cell[#] composition is best represented as Mg12(OH)16Si8O20. This cell has dimensions of a= 5.3Å, b = 9.2 Å, and c = 14.6 Å where the "a" direction is the fiber axis. The calculated density of this unit is 2.56 g/cc, a value in close agreement with experimentally determined density values for chrysotile. INTRODUCTION Health physics as a profession really got a significant start during the Manhattan Project of World War 11. The Health Physics Society has recently published its 25th anniversary issue of the journal (June 1980). There was concern over radiation exposures during and after uranium production, especially about radium and its daughter products [Jackson 19401 and, as evidenced by the frequency of articles in the literature, there still is. The reason for this concern was expressed by Harley as "Workers engaged in the mining and pro- cessing of radium-bearing materials are exposed to dusts of the parent, to radon, and to the radon daughter products. In- haled radioactive particulates may be retained in the lung or redistributed to other organs of the body. Relatively minute de- posits of radioactive substances, particularly alpha emitters, have been clearly shown to be the etiological factor in a variety of injuries to industrial and re- search workers. " [Harley 1953] Emphasis in measurements has been placed on radium in water and radon in air, since these are the principal mobilized phases; however, it should be kept in mind that radium-containing particles do become suspended in air as aerosols and radon absorbs in liquids. Much of the uranium mining and production is being carried out aboveground. The principal difference between underground and surface (pit or leach) mining of uranium is the reversal in the relative importance of roles for the types of radiation dose. For aboveground the major radiation exposure is external gamma ray, whereas for underground it is internal alpha; for aboveground, the whole body penetrating is of greater importance than the lung alpha dose. AS a result of the politics involved and the law- suits for any and all diseases as being occupationally- caused, today , more than ever before, the successful performance of the activities connected with uranium production--before-, during-, and after-the-fact-- must include the provision of first class radiation protection. Such protection can be achieved by good measurements, thorough risk evaluations, and adequate controls. Meeting the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) philosophy necessarily entails the determination of what is reasonable exposure. The necessary and sufficient elements of radiation safety under the ALARA dictum require a hard look at the dose versus effects data. There are times when the health physicist needs to make decisions of judgement rather than compliance with a well-defined regulation value. In order to facilitate such decisions, the real world must be separated from opinions that are merely artifacts of statistical variation and from the unprovable "what ifs" that are slanted to question the morality of any non-Luddite. UNITS VOCABULARY FOR DOSIMETRY There have been many radiation quantifying and dosimetric units introduced in the past. Fortunately, most of them did not catch on enough to become required knowledge for reading the health physics literature. The unit definitions necessary for our purposes here are the following: -curie (Ci)--unit of radioactivity equal to 3.7 x 10 10 disintegrations per second Webster&apos;s 19711 or the quantity of radionuclide that undergoes 3.7 x 10 nuclear transformations per second. Environmental levels of radioactivity are usually measured in picocuries (10-l2 Ci) per cubic meter for air and in picocuries per liter (pCi/~) for water and sometimes for air. .roentgen (R)--exposure dose of x or gamma rays that gives 1 esu of charge (either sign) to 1 cc of dry air @ STP. The roentgen is equivalent to an energy absorption of 86.7 ergs/g of air [Gloyna and Ledbetter 19691. .rad--radiation absorbed dose of 100 ergs per gram of absorber. The SI unit for absorbed radiation dose is the Gray; 1 Gy = 100 rads. orem--radiation absorbed dose of 1 rad times the quality factor (QF) for that radiation. The QF is 1 for x rays, gamma rays, beta rays, and posi- trons. For heavy ionizing particulate radiation, QF is a function of the amount of energy trans- ferred per unit length of travel, i.e. , the linear energy transfer (LET); the values of QF:LET in keV/um are as follows: 1:<3.5; 1-2:3.5-7; 2-5:7-23; 5-10:23-53; and 10-20:53-175 [Morgan and Turner 19 671 . For radiobiology, relative biological effectiveness (RBE) is recommended for use instead of the quality factor above that is for radiation protection: the RBE is the ratio of the dose of 200 kVp x rays to the dose of radia- tion in question (both in rads) to cause the same

Discussion of the paper of BOYD DUDLEY, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 96, December, 1914, pp. 2767 to 2782. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-At the close of the paper Mr. Dudley said that his experiments in the laboratory had shown that it was possible to separate nickel from copper by means of a chloridizing roasting, but that in order to demonstrate a process of this kind, work upon a large scale would have to be carried out. I think it was in 1913, that experiments of this kind were carried out at the works of the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co., Philadelphia, in a Wedge furnace, and at Sault Ste. Marie in a Sjöstedt furnace. They showed a satisfactory separation of nickel and copper. The ore was first subjected to an oxidizing roast, then mixed with pyrite and salt, and given a chloridizing roast. A. H. Carpenter published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, vol. xcvii, p. 1085 (1914) the details of this work. The conclusion arrived at is, that if you subject sulphide ore to an oxidizing roast, finishing at the temperature at which all nickel sulphate is dissociated, i.e., 764° C., then mix it with pyrite and salt, and subject the mixture to a chloridizing roast between 600° and 700° C., you can chloridize a high percentage of the copper without chloridizing any of the nickel, and obtain thereby a satisfactory means of separating the two.

THE present knowledge of the Ti-Al system is limited to the portion of the diagram extending from pure aluminum to the intermetallic compound TiAl3&apos; A preliminary investigation of the titanium-rich Ti-A1 alloys revealed that the solubility of aluminum in titanium is quite extensive and that the transformation temperature of titanium is raised by alloying with aluminum. From an X-ray diffraction study of alloys containing up to 75 atomic pct Al (TiAl3), the phase boundaries at 750°C were located as follows: the a titanium solid solution extends from 0 to about 36 atomic pct Al, a two-phase region exists from 36 to 46 atomic pct Al, and an intermediate phase of varying concentration extends from 46 to 62 atomic pct Al. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the crystal structure of this new phase. The alloys were prepared by melting in a helium arc furnace on a water-cooled copper plate, using a furnace essentially the same as that described in ref. 2. The titanium metal was of the iodide type furnished by the New Jersey Zinc Co., and a piece of pure aluminum (99.99 pct) was obtained through the courtesy of the Aluminum Co. of America. After melting, the samples, weighing approximately 5 g, were sealed in evacuated fused silica tubes and homogenized for 4 hr at 1000°C. The specimens were then held for 10 days at 750°C and rapidly cooled to room temperature. Filings were then taken from each sample, sealed in evacuated vials, annealed at 750°C for 4 hr, and rapidly cooled to room temperature by quenching the vials in water. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained with a 14.32 cm diam camera, using K copper radiation filtered through a nickel foil. Structure Determination The X-ray diffraction patterns of the alloys containing 46, 50, 55. 60, and 62 atomic pct Al were identical, except for a slight shift in the positions of the reflections. The alloy containing 55 atomic pct Al was chosen far structure determination. The powder pattern contained 37 reflections and the a, doublets were well resolved in the back-reflection range. The relatively small number of reflections and the sharpness of the pattern were considered as an indication of a simple atomic arrangement in a relatively small unit cell of high symmetry, and an attempt was therefore made to solve the structure without single crystal work. A satisfactory fit was found on a large scale Hull-Davey tetragonal chart for an axial ratio of approximately 1.45. All the reflections were readily indexed and the tentative unit cell dimensions were computed to be a - 2.81 kX, c - 4.07 kX, and c/a = 1.448. The indices (hkl) and the values of d and sin2 A are given in Table I. The agreement between observed and computed sin2 is quite satisfactory. Once the unit cell was known, the details of the structure were readily found. First, it is obvious that the number of atoms per unit cell cannot exceed two, since more than two atoms would lead to a density greater than that of pure titanium. The next logical step is to assume that the two atoms occupy the corner and center of the cell. If this assumption is correct, the structure may be described as follows: space group D1, - P 4/mmm; one titanium atom in a: 000; one aluminum atom in d: 1/2 1/2 1/2: and no extinctions. Assuming this structure to be the correct one. intensities were computed by means of the usual equation: sin2 0 cos 0 where F is the structure factor; 8, the Bragg angle. and p, the multiplicity factor. The calculated values of intensities are compared in Table I with the visually estimated intensities. The agreement is quite satisfactory and the structure is therefore confirmed. THE Mineral Industry Education Division of AIME has long been interested in geophysical education. Organized in 1938, a Committee on Geophysical Education presented a number of reports in succeeding years. The AIME is an engineering society; hence it might be expected that the interest of the Mineral Industry Education Division would have centered about the relation of courses in geophysics to engineering education. However, this was not the case. The burden of the discussion held under the auspices of the Committee on Geophysical Education bore on geophysics in general and particularly on its relation to geology. In the decade that has passed since those meetings much water has flowed under the bridge. Not only have the geophysical sciences developed at an extraordinarily rapid rate but the practical importance and the range of their applications have spread in ever widening circles and have even assumed a very prominent place in research programs of the military, the Army, the Navy and, particularly, the Geophysical Research Directorate of the Air Force at Cambridge, Mass. So enormously have the geophysical sciences as such grown in scope and in degree of specialization that no one man in a lifetime of study can hope to master the theoretical and experimental complexities or even to follow intelligently in the published literature all the varied accomplishments of basic research in these &apos;fields. As in the other sciences, most of the results of geophysical research have potential economic value and are being applied to a wider and wider range of human needs. Here we see a parallel with the older sciences and their relation to engineering. Whenever the applications of scientific results required the special experimental background, the economic outlook, and the practical knowledge characteristic of the engineer, a curriculum in that type of engineering grew up in the colleges and universities. In the words of the "Report of the Committee on Adequacy and Standards of Engineering Education" in the. January 1952 number of the Journal of Engineering Education: "Engineering education in America was not developed after a preconceived plan. It evolved in parallel with the needs of a growing country, a country engaged in the development of a vast industrialization. From the first it filled a practical need, and its design emanated largely from an evaluation of the professional requirement." The advent of the railroad created a need for scientifically trained engineers and the response was the curriculum in civil engineering. The development of steam power created the demand for a curriculum in mechanical engineering. Neither of these types of engineers was trained to cope with the requirements of electrical power, and so there came to be a curriculum in electrical engineering. The advent of radio communication and of electronics during the first World War and in the years that followed resulted in the establishment of electronics engineering, sometimes within the curriculum in electrical engineering and sometimes independent of it. The complexities of industrial management have created an ever increasing demand for industrial engineers and the consequent building up of a curriculum in industrial engineering. The wide industrial application of chemical processes required a type of engineer whose background was training in chemistry but who was able to design processes and plants on an industrial scale; hence we have the curriculum in chemical engineering. The advent of the airplane created an entirely new set of problems which were solved by the training of aeronautical engineers. Many of these have called for more and more science and mathematics. Normal phosphoric acid is H3P04, and consequently normal phosphates have the formulas R3PO4, R3(P04)2 and RPO4, and similarly for the arsenates, etc. Only a comparatively small number of species conform to this simple formula. Most species contain more than one metallic element, and in the prominent Apatite Group the radical (CaF), (CaCI) or (PbCI) enters; in in the Wagnerite Group we have similarly (RF) or (ROH).

The Bougainville ore body was discovered in 1964 by a partnership of Conzinc Rio Tinto of Australia and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. The ore body is a porphyry copper in a fine-grained quartz diorite, which intrudes andesite volcanics and is located at an elevation of about 2, 000 ft in the Crown Prince Range of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. Mineralization is predominantly chalcopyrite with some bornite and some gold and silver present. Rainfall in the area amounts to 200 in. (5. 08 m) per year. An active volcano is situated only 24 miles (38.4 km) from the mine, and all structures were designed to resist seismic shocks. An interesting and unique feature of the Bougainville operation was that the overburden was stripped with hydraulic monitors. Bougainville Copper, at 90,000 tpd, is the largest copper concentrator to be designed and constructed at one time; and besides the twin 54 in. by 74 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratories, it features seven 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and fourteen 7 ft shorthead crushers, in addition to nine 18 ft diameter by 21 ft long (5. 5 m by 6. 4 m), 4250 hp, single -stage ball mills. During the design stage of the Bougainville primary crushing plant, several alternates were studied because the ore was expected to break with the production of large amounts of small-sized particles but with a minimum of fines. These alternates included two 54 in. by 74 in. gyratories with grizzlies, two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories, and one 72 in. by 96 in. gyratory, the latter two installations without grizzlies. The two 54 in. units with grizzlies were finally selected as giving good reliability and the ability to handle the large amounts of small material in the feed. As originally installed, grizzly bars were set at 8 in. (203 mm); but, in an effort to perform more interparticle crushing in the primary and less rock-on-steel crushing in the secondaries and tertiaries, a test is underway (1976) to determine the effect of using 6 in. (152 mm) grizzly spacings (see write -up on Anaconda&apos;s crusher at Butte). The Bougainville ore is mined with 17 cu yd (13 cu m) shovels and hauled in 105, 170, and 210 st trucks to the crushers, which are equipped for two-side dumping. Up to 40% of the ore passes the grizzlies, which are equipped with splitters; and additional horizontal splitter bars are located directly above the spider caps. Because of the grizzlies, the crushers are supported by unique U-shaped enclosures, which are in turn supported by the end and center walls of the installation.

A method has been developed for calculating the average pressure in a bounded reservoir. The reservoir is first divided into the individual drainage volumes of each well, by using the criterion that at steady state each individual drainage volume is proportional to a well&apos;s production rate. The average pressure in each drainage volume is then calculated by a method developed in the report. By volumetrically averaging these individual drainage volume pressures, the average pressure in the entire reservoir is obtained. To calculate the average pressure in each drainage volume, a correction is applied to the ordinary extrapolated pressure, i.e., the pressure obtained by extrapolating to infinite time the linear portion of the graph of closed-in pressure versus log[?t/(t + ?t)], where At is the closed-in time and t the production time. The correction, which is a function of the production time, is presented in graphical form for different shapes of the drainage area (horizontal cross section of the drainage volume). INTRODUCTION It is important to be able to find the volumetric average pressure in a reservoir so that the size of the reservoir may be determined from material balance calculations. It is also desirable to be able to find the approximate distribution of pressure within a reservoir for detection of fluid movement. &apos;The purpose of this paper is to present a method for calculating both the average reservoir pressure and the approximate distribution of pressure within a bounded reservoir — that is, a reservoir with no water drive. In reservoirs where the pressure builds up rapidly after wells are shut in, the determination of average pressure generally poses little problem, for one often need only average the final buildup pressures. It is when pressure buildup is slow that difficulties arise. For practical and economical reasons, the time allowable for closing in wells is limited. If at the maximum allowable closed-in time the pressure has not reached a con- stant value (and this is more often the case than is generally realized), calculation of average pressure presents difficulties. One method which has been used in the past for obtaining an "average" pressure involves the extrapolation to infinite closed-in time of curves of pressure as a function of closed-in time. Contour maps of these extrapolated pressures are used in arriving at an average pressure. In some cases wells are shut in for arbitrary Lengths of time, and contours of these arbitrary shut-in pressures are used for calculation. All these methods are somewhat arbitrary and suffer from lack of fundamental theoretical basis. For example, no precise meaning can be given either to the extrapolated or to the arbitrary shut-in pressure. Furthermore, there seems to be no reason why either set of pressures should be contourable. It was because of the vagueness of these old methods and their lack of a sound theoretical basis that, the present method for determining average reservoir pressure was developed. The temperatures of solid-liquid interfaces have been measured during the growth of Sn-Pb alloy crystals which exhibited a cellulur substructure. A simple descriptive theory was used in combination with this data and the other measurable growth variables to predict some features of the solute segregation such as the intercell excess concentration and the depth of cell grooves during freezing. The effective distribution coefficient at the tip of a cell, a, was predicted and experimentally found to vary in the range, 1 >a > k0. At the lower limit, the severe segregation that must arise between dendritic cells was substantiated by various observations such as the existence of a second Phase even for alloys of only 0.2 wt pct Pb. ThE cellular morphology of a solid-liquid interface is known to coincide with the formation of a zone of constitutional supercooling ahead of the interface during growth.&apos; The occurrence of various cell structures, (two-dimensional cells, regular cells, dendritic cells), has been quantitatively investigated,&apos;2,4 but the segregation of solute which arises as a consequence of this mode of growth has only been examined qualitatively. THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the frothability of pine oil is governed by: 1-rate of aeration, 2-time of aeration, 3-height of liquid column, 4-chemical composition of pine oil, 5-pH value of solution, 6-temperature of, solution, and 7-concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.1 The results also show that the relative frothabilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of reproducibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1-compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2-a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be .either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifing and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.2 Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 ± 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water.
