My function here today is not to illuminate any particular subject but simply to welcome you to Penn State and to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Our college is, of course, dedicated to the same thing to which most of you have dedicated your lives--the exploration of the earth, the extraction of materials from it, and the production of useful things from those materials. We have about 2,000 students engaged in studying in preparation for service in these activities at the present time. Like other colleges of our type, we've undergone a great expansion just at a time when university budgets are contracting. This creates an interesting situation as to how we can best use our resources. This, of course, is the thing a lot of you are going to be talking about here--how we can best use the world's resources. As you well know, the expectations of the people of the world are rising, and, with the numbers of people increasing and with finite resources, there never was a time in history when it was more important that we become "quantitative" in our discovery, estimation, extraction, and utilization of those resources. I think it is admirable and very timely that you are gathered together to discuss your various approaches to this particu¬lar problem of quantifying and making most efficient use of the resources of the world. Yours is sort of a hidden profession, not just because you actually go underground, but because the public in general is not aware of where the materials they use come from. If you are successful in your professions the public will continue to be unaware. Only if you fail will your essential function become patently obvious. I wish you success both in your professional pursuits and in this particular meeting.

Four coals were treated in the Humphreys spiral concentrator, and the products were examined by float-and-sink and screen-sizing tests to determine fundamental performance characteristics. The efficiency of the separation between coal and impurity was shown to be influenced greatly by particle size. FOUR coals exhibiting different washability characteristics were washed in the Humphreys spiral concentrator and the products examined by float-and-sink and screen-sizing tests to determine the mechanics of the separation between coal and impurity. With one coal, each 1/2-in. increment of the full width of the stream in the spiral was examined separately to determine where each size and specific-gravity fraction of the feed was stratified. The basic performance characteristics of the spiral were found to be the same for all of these coals. The coarsest fraction of heavy impurity stratified so far out in the stream that it could not be removed through the refuse ports and thus either entered a middling product or contaminated the washed coal in the case of a two-product separation. Impurity particles finer than about 100-mesh also were carried out in the main body of the stream and therefore were not removed in the refuse product. Little loss of clean coal in the refuse occurred in sizes coarser than 28-mesh or finer than 100-mesh, but considerable coal of intermediate size stratified in the stream that was drawn off through the refuse ports. Because of this modifying influence of particle size, the spiral is unable to make an efficient two-product separation between coal and impurity without some retreatment. Recirculation of a middling product through the same spiral as a means of obtaining more efficient operation was not attempted in this investigation. The size and specific-gravity composition of the middling product are, however, such as to render it amenable to simple hydraulic classification for recovery of coal. Retreatment of a middling product would improve the efficiency of the spiral, but even when making a substantial amount of middling, considerable clean coal enters the refuse product. Consequently, retreatment of a combined refuse-middling product would appear to offer greater promise for providing maximum efficiency. Because of the sizing characteristics of the spiral, a classified feed can be treated with higher efficiency than is possible on a natural raw coal. For this reason, semiclassified feeds, such as silt-bank or classifier-underflow materials, can doubtless be treated with higher efficiencies than those shown for raw coals in this report. Performance is, of course, only one of many factors that enter into the choice of cleaning equipment. The fact that the one company now using the spiral for cleaning coal has built a second spiral plant is ample evidence that the inherently low efficiency of this unit may be overshadowed by the low operating costs afforded by its extreme simplicity. Introduction A number of factors enter into the selection of coal-cleaning equipment, and most of them bear directly on the final cost of prepared coal. One of these factors is performance of the cleaning unit in terms of the efficiency of the separation it effects between clean coal and refuse. The importance of performance in the selection of a coal-cleaning unit varies with the difficulty of the cleaning problem. Obviously, if the character of the coal is such that only certain types of cleaning units are capable of yielding a clean product meeting market requirements, performance is of prime importance. If, on the other hand, the cleaning problem is so simple that any type of cleaner will provide coal of suitable quality, performance is important only insofar as it affects costs by determining the amount of salable coal lost in the washery refuse. Brass mills are familiar with a recurring problem which reveals itself during deformation of annealed metal as an opening up of cracks which are suggestive of a grain boundary pattern. A typical example is seen in Fig 1, which shows part of the convex surface of a cartridge brass disc which was slightly dished by the punching operation. Another illustration of the same type of defect was found in the surface of a finished cartridge case which split open on firing. These cracks, shown in Fig 2, were away from the split but indicate the presence of the type of weakness which permitted the splitting. Usually the weakness consists of separate cracks, the lengths of which are of the same order of magnitude as the grain size prior to the final anneal. Their typical appearance in a polished section is shown in Fig 3. This structure was found below the surface of a fractured tensile-specimen that had been cut from a large cartridge blank showing the defects on its convex surface. While the pattern formed by these cracks suggests a grain boundary origin, the cracks bear no relation to the currently existing grain structure. Thus Fig 3 shows that the grains have grown up to cracks already present. Since it is doubtful that the cracks were present in the metal before the anneal, they must have formed during the anneal but prior to recrystallization. The term "fire-cracking" has been generally applied to cracking that occurs during an anneal under the influence of internal stress, but refers more specifically to obvious macroscopic cracking attributable to the presence of a low melting phase, usually lead. Since the type of cracking described above may occur when the lead content is very low, we have considered it a somewhat different phenomenon, and have called it "inter-granular parting." While most examples involve cartridge brass, intergranular parting has also been observed in the fabrication of large seamless tubes from discs of both 85/15 red brass and 70/30 cupro-nickel. Similar cracking in nickel silver was investigated by Jones and Whitehead,1 who showed that it could occur during healing or cooling. That which occurred on heating they called "fire cracking," and they suggested that, a transformation at about 320°C might account for its occurrence. It was felt in this laboratory that the observed parting was probably one aspect of the general observation, first made by Rosenhain and Archbutt,2 that a tendency toward intergranular fracture under tensile stress increases with increasing temperature and decreasing rate of strain. In this case the stress involved would be internal. The rate of strain would be exceedingly slow, a localized internal creep. Reference to the literature uncovered no efforts to extend the observations of Rosenhain to conditions involving only internal stress. Accordingly, an exploratory research, sufficient in detail to satisfy us as to the probable truth of this explanation of the observed intergranular parting, was undertaken. The internal stresses present during the early stages of an anneal (prior to recrystallization) would be from two sources: residual stresses developed during deformation, and thermal stresses caused by uneven heating and expansion. Thermal stresses would vary widely according to shape, size and manner of heating, and can be considered as supplementary to residual stresses. It seemed necessary to determine the stress and temperature conditions under which parting would occur in a relatively short time, and then to establish whether or not in- ternal stresses may persist to an extent adequate to cause parting at such temperatures. (Jones and Whitehead1 and Moore and Beckinsale3 made tests which indicated that stress relief required an appreciable time.) During the course of the research the desirability of studying the effect of grain size became apparent, and this factor is one of the major variables of our investigation. Intergranular Parting under Tension at Elevated Temperatures In early experiments, hard 70/30 brass tensile specimens, with unknown residual stresses, held for 10 min. at applied stresses from 30,000 to 40,000 psi at temperatures from 300 to 350°C, showed no macroscopically visible cracks when unloaded and cooled, but cracks very similar in appearance to those observed in commercial practice were revealed in these specimens by pulling them to fracture. Annealed specimens, on the other hand, showed no cracks in such experiments, apparently because they deformed plastically at stresses below those necessary to cause parting in a reasonable time. Hence, the specimens used for this study were first strengthened by cold tensile elongation, giving them an unavoidable residual stress pattern (determined largely by grain size and orientation) which would, however, correspond in direction, at least, to the stress pattern obtained under stress at temperature. A variation in these residual stresses might be expected with variations in grain size, but following any given anneal the reproducibility of stress pattern should be as good as that of the grain size measurement. With no information as to the effect of the amount of prior deformation, tests were conducted on specimens given the same cold elongation, using a stress applied at temperature which was a constant proportion of the stress required to produce this elongation. THE Woman's Auxiliary now has its own publica-tion, a monthly news letter that is mailed direct to all its members. It is a lively and readable sheet. Any member of the Auxiliary failing to receive it should communicate with Mrs. J. E. Johnson, Jr., 49 Church Lane, Scarsdale, N. Y., and get on the mailing list. The detailed reports of the meetings will hereafter ap-pear in the News Letter rather than in MINING AND METALLURGY. The regular Board meeting held on March 3, with Mrs. Barron presiding, was well attended and the re-ports of the committees, and from local sections, showed a keen interest in the work. of the organization. Steps are being taken to endow a "Mary Young Westervelt Scholarship," libraries are being built up in mining towns, and interesting reunions .are being held by the members in the various local sections. The Auxiliary is filling an important place and doing it well. Women of the families of Institute members not already affili-ated with it would find it pleasant to get in touch.

THE zinc deposits under development by the Universal Exploration Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, are close to Jefferson City, Tenn., a small town about 30 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tenn., and are served by the Southern Railway. The first zinc mining in this district was in the old Mossy Creek mine at the north edge of the town, opened for oxidized ores in 1871 and later worked for sulfide ores. An oxidized zinc ore deposit (carbonates and silicates) was opened near New Market in 1900 and worked through the war period by the G1'8sselli Chemical Co., producing around 25,000 tons of oxidized ore. In recent years a sulfide deposit has been found and developed but is not producing. About 1% miles south of this a small body of sulfide ore was developed by open cut, but the operation was unsuccessful. The Universal Exploration Co. entered the district in 1926 and, after extensive exploration, has been operating an oxidized ore-body since Janual:y, 1928, and has been developing a sulfide ore body since July, 1928.

Wide attention is being placed upon various methods for cleaning the fine sizes of bituminous coals. The author describes and analyzes the results achieved on wet concentrating tables of modern design on unclassified feeds of —Vz in. particle sizes, including tests on high-sulphur coals. THE increased economic necessity of cleaning the small sizes of coal has forced wide attention upon various methods or processes being used. Although numerous cleaning plants in the past have been cleaning coal smaller than Vz or % in., the large quantities of higher ash fines being produced by mechanical mining and the need for cleaner coal under competitive market conditions have brought about many new installations of fine-coal cleaning plants. Of various methods used, one of the more popular types is the wet concentrating table. Approximately 525 tables have been installed in the United States in the past four years of which 320 have been installed in 20, large new plants. There are now probably 1600 tables of all types in existence in this country for cleaning coal. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cleaning of fine coal by wet concentrating tables. Its scope is confined to a discussion of the theory of tabling and some of the factors entering into tabling action, a description of the Deister SuperDuty diagonal-deck coal table and a discussion of the results of tabling various fine sizes of coals. Al- though tables have been used for cleaning coal as coarse as 2 in. and favorable results are reported, this paper is limited to reporting on the results of cleaning coal fines from 1/2 in. down. Also, although it is well known that the performance of tables is even superior under classified or closely sized feed conditions, this paper concerns itself with the results achieved by tabling unclassified feeds. NO slackening of research and development in the physical metallurgy of iron and steel was evident in 1943-our second year since Pearl Harbor. Of course, many of the achievements were of a military nature, and could not be reviewed here even if they were known to the authors. It is an open secret that far-reaching investi¬gations have been undertaken in governmental, industrial, and university laboratories, and it is strongly hoped that much of this work will be brought to light when peace comes. However, despite the metallurgist's wartime assignments and the necessary restrictions on his reports he has still managed to publish substantial contributions to the knowledge of iron and steel. This has been particularly true in the United States; foreign papers have been too uncertain in their arrival to permit a comprehensive appraisal of developments abroad.

NINETEEN states have on their statutes laws requiring engineers practicing within their borders to be licensed sixteen other states have such laws under consideration. While mining engineers are not specifically referred to in every case, they are referred to by implication. In only a few states have mining engineers taken any active interest in this subject, either in support or in opposition, yet it is a matter of very grave importance to them. By some it is thought that it is now too late to take any active steps toward preventing or repealing a type of legislation for which there appears to be a growing demand from some source. And it is further thought that the best course for those who are interested is to endeavor to guide legislation so that the remaining states may enact laws containing as few objectionable features as possible.

John Griffen—The author has called attention to an important phase of coal cleaning since there has been considerable loose thinking regarding efficiency formulae and particularly inaccurate application of ones that have been advanced. The unanimous acceptance of an efficiency formula has been prevented because the issue has been beclouded by the fact that the objective of cleaning—-the control of chemical characteristics of the coal such as ash or sulphur content—is attained by an indirect rather than a direct method. The indirect method is usually to effect separation according to differences in specific gravity. Such separation relies on the fact that the desired chemical qualities are roughly inversely proportional to the specific gravity of the particles being separated. However, the sulphur content of the materials found in raw coal usually exhibit a far from straight line relationship with their specific gravities. Mr. Anderson meets this issue squarely by basing his formula on the efficiency of separation according to specific gravity only. It is true that machines that effect primarily a specific gravity separation are in no way directly influenced by the chemical analysis of the materials being handled and it can be argued that it is illogical to measure their efficiency by any criterion other than that of separation according to specific gravity. For the moment, let us accept this basis and analyze the application of the efficiency conception and formula proposed by Mr. Anderson under conditions which he has not considered but that will readily be found. Let us take the separation shown in his table III as an example. He terms this an example of a high order of quantitative efficiency. We will show the weight distribution of the various gravity fractions as between clean coal and refuse in table XV. Only in the gravity range of 1.50 to 1.70 has material been misplaced and, on the assumption that the cleaned coal and refuse are equal in weight, Anderson shows a quantitative efficiency of 99 pet. The gravity of separation is 1.60 and one third of the 1.50 to 1.60 sp gr fraction is misplaced in the refuse while one third of the 1.60 to 1.70 sp gr fraction is misplaced in the cleaned coal. A small group of members of the Institute headed by W. H. Shockley, has insistently demanded that the Institute submit to the members for letter ballot the question of our using in our publications and corre-spondence certain so-called "simplified spellings." The principal argu-ment in favor of this proposal is written by Mr. Shockley and will be submitted in full to the membership for ballot. It rests chiefly on the desirability of saving the time of school children in the learning of the spelling of the English language. A sample of correspondence had with one of the gentlemen on this subject is given herewith in order that members may see what the correspondence and publications of the Institute would look like if we adopted the proposals. This sample was chosen at random: "Onse I condemd the report ov a president of the Institute. He did not pruve his case even on paper-"a hot air profet," I sed. Time has pruved he was." "I rote yu about the muvement to better the spelling in the Institute Bulletin, etc., neglecting to say some things that I mite hav said and things hav happened since which no member ov a democratically governed society shoud stand without protest."

THE metallic products of today represent the temporary end point of the efforts and interplay of thousands of years of the human struggle for existence, for pleasure, for conquest, for defense, for improvement in the standard of living, and for the satisfaction of that irrepressible urge to discover and utilize the materials and laws of nature Each metal has gained its place in the sun in severe competition with all other materials, be they metallic or nonmetallic Each serves better than any other for certain purposes. The compromise between cost and properties usually determines the selection of a metallic product for a given use. There are exceptions, as in wartime when the availability at a certain place at a certain time may far outweigh the ordinary economic considerations. In many instances superior properties are vastly more important than cost. If this were not so, the metal industry, for practical purposes, would be the iron industry. The use of 38,000,000 metric tons of newly produced nonferrous metal during, the five-year period from 1940 through 1944 is ample evidence that the special properties of these many metals have great economic value. In fact, our extensive industrial advances would have been quite impossible without the great range and variety of properties and combinations of properties of the nonferrous metals. Molten silicate salts, the important industrial byproducts termed "slags," are known to be electrolytic conductors at furnace temperatures. This property is due to their partial dissociation into ions with the ion kind and size being closely related to the slag composition. Ionic conductance, in liquids, is a function of the viscosity, which in turn is a function of the temperature. It could be anticipated, therefore, that a semi-log plot of conductivity vs. reciprocal absolute temperature might yield a straight line, in the case of molten silicates and salts. As liquids, the viscosity of these slags should follow the Shepard1 relationship: log viscosity = A/T + B Then, if the resistance of the molten slag is directly proportional to the viscosity: log Rs = A/T + B Resistance measurements of molten halide salts,2 and silicate salts34 by various investigators have, indeed, shown this straight line relationship between resistance and temperature. A further relationship between the conductivity versus the degree of ioni-zation, the size of the ions, and the slag composition is, also, to be expected. Large ions, and fewer ions, would move more slowly in a potential field and could not carry as much current as smaller, more numerous, and mobile, ions. Conductivity, therefore, would be smaller in the presence of such large ions and higher slag viscosities. The conductivity-composition relationship is of considerable interest in the case of the industrial slags produced in iron blast furnaces, and non-ferrous smelting furnaces. These slags usually approximate three component systems with several minor components as impurities. At least one of the major components is commonly purchased for the sole purpose of rendering the slag less viscous at a reasonable furnace temperature. Should the conductivity be related rather directly to the concentration of such a purchased slag component (that is, CaO) instrumental measurement and control at the furnace might be possible. Modern tele-metric control methods in aqueous chemical process industries are often based on the property of conductivity of solutions, and its variation with composition. Investigators3 of the phenomenon of electrical conductivity in molten blast furnace slags have established that these systems show lines of equal conductivity on their ternary diagrams at one temperature level. These isocon-ductivity lines form closed contours on the diagrams, and at times, minimum areas occur at which these contours are essentially closed down to a point. S. J. SINDEBAND*—(1) Discussing the properties of the powders used, Mr. Rostoker mentioned a silicon powder as being between 150 and 325 mesh. We always had much difficulty in measuring particle size of silicon powder by screen analysis, because of its tendency to agglomerate. I would be interested in the method used to measure these particle sizes. (2) Mr. Rostoker maintains that the measurement of magnetic properties is more accurate in determining complete homogenization of an alloy, than is the X ray diffraction technique. I wonder whether this is really true. Even when diffusion is complete, magnetic properties will change during continuation of the heat treatment, due to change in density and pore shapes, as has been demonstrated by Mr. Rostoker himself. Which effect is faster, the diffusion of the alloy components or the attainment of final density, will, in my opinion, depend very much on initial material and sintering conditions used. For magnetic applications, of course, the magnetic measurements are most suited for determining the point at which equilibrium conditions are reached. (3) I was glad to see that Mr. Rostoker had used sample sizes which are similar to those I had used previously, and I believe that ring samples of about 2 in. od will become more or less standard samples for the determination of magnetic properties of powder metallurgy products. I should like to ask how the density was changed for the samples on which the effect of porosity was investi- gated, and, further, why the sintering temperature used for this series of experiments was so low. It is somewhat surprising that a 24-hr treatment at 850°C acts so much more to spheroidize the pores than a treatment for 1 hr at 1100°C. But the effect seems to be indisputable. I have made an investigation of the influence of sintering temperature for longer times on the maximum permeabilities of iron powder compacts which was presented at the International Powder Metallurgy Conference in Graz, in 1948, and I hope that these results will be published here within a short time. The results of this investigation are confirmed by Mr. Rostoker's findings that the change of time from 1 to 24 hr changes the permeability behavior considerably in the direction as indicated by Polder and Van Santen for spheroidiza-tion of pores. WHEN scientific literature was lacking or meager, research necessarily meant laboratory investigation above all else. Today, scientific literature has attained tremendous proportions, and the volume increases at a much faster rate than it is digested and efficiently utilized. For that reason the present-day research worker should spend much more time in the library, and correspondingly less in the laboratory, than is the general custom. Library research would overcome two serious errors often made by scientists: duplication of work described completely and failure to appreciate inventions described almost verbatim in the literature. To emphasize these failings that often occur in present-day research, consider a hypothetical scientist as he conducts his search from inception to the stage where it is made available to the public by patent or other publication.

IN order to make clear the reasons for the basic importance of petroleum and natural gas in the world today, and the problems faced by our scientists and technologists in using efficiently these great natural resources and finding possible replacements for them, it will be necessary to present a brief discussion of hydrocarbon chemistry The most important use of petroleum products is as fuel, particularly for the various forms of the internal-combustion engine There are, of course, hundreds of thousands of chemical compounds that give off heat when they burn, that is, when they combine with the oxygen of the air If a capable chemist were assigned the problem of finding the ideal volatile liquid fuel for use in an engine, he would probably begin by referring to the tables that give the heats of combustion of the chemical elements Of all the ninety-odd elements, hydrogen shows up with by far the highest heat of combustion-about 52,000 British thermal units per pound Unfortunately, however, hydrogen is a very light gas, which can be liquefied only at very low temperatures To burn it as fuel in an automobile would require a balloon about as big as the car to hold the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline, or, the hydrogen could be compressed in heavy steel cylinders, but -this would require about 125 pounds of steel per pound of hydrogen. THE aftermath of a world war brings up a number of economic problems for the consideration of all thinking and patriotic citizens. The solution of the problems which confront the country at this time cannot well be accomplished by reference to past experience, for such conditions as confront us today have not existed in the past. We must, therefore, in any attempt to solve the present problems, rely to a great extent upon a careful analysis of present conditions to determine what is wrong; and after this is determined, seek the remedy and apply it. It needs no argument to establish the fact that, in the effort to win the war, the cost of so doing, and the waste in connection with it were, to a large extent, lost sight of; and this situation caused high wages, high cost of all materials, and of food supplies.
