Discussion of the paper of DWIGHT T. FARNHAM, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2357 to 2364. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-Do you know anything about the character of that clay as to organic matter? H. RIES, Ithaca, N. Y.-No; it is a dark brownish clay, sandy in its nature. The brownish coloring is probably due to organic matter. Some lignite is also present. DONALD W. Ross.*-I have worked at the plant under consideration. I have not seen Mr. Farnham's paper; but in answering the question as to the organic matter, I might say there is practically no organic material scattered through the shale. There are, however, several layers of carbonaceous shale and rather low-grade coal interbedded with the formation. There are two very serious drawbacks-one which threatens to shut down the plant and another which merely means the expenditure of money. The first is taking care of the sediment from the washing away of the overburden. The government is doing extensive work at different points about Lake Washington with a view to creating a fresh-water harbor for Seattle. I understand that they keep at the Denny-Renton people to keep the channel of Cedar River clear. The Denny-Renton Co. can hardly help filling up the channel so long as they continue their hydraulic work, so this is probably one of their most serious problems. The other is this: There is a large percentage of what I should call micaceous shale or sandstone-a sandstone which contains a large amount of light-colored mica. Of course only a limited amount of this can be used in the manufacture of paving brick. As they shoot down the bank after the overburden of gravel and loam is washed away, these large boulders of micaceous sandstone come down. The strata have apparently been crushed where the clay pit is located so that the exact formation cannot be readily determined. These pieces of sandstone, 5 or 6 ft. in diameter, have to be blasted and removed from the shale. They bother both in the open pit and in the tunnel mining. In the tunnel mining of the shale blocks frequently cover the holes in the roof of the tunnel through which the shale is loaded into cars.

THE law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high, prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. THE steel industry has always been noted for producing men of forceful and versatile personality, many of whom combine the practicality that results from wide experience with an excellent theoretical background that comes from a college training plus years of wide and constant study of metallurgical literature. One of the best known examples of this type is Earle C. Smith, present Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division. After graduating from Ohio State and from Columbia, where he studied under Campbell, Earle started his career at that grand old prewar training school for steel men the Illinois Steel Co., where in the days of the twelve-hour shift he worked on the open-hearth floor. Following World War I, when he was in charge of government inspection at the Central Steel Co., Massillon, Earle held successively jobs of increasing responsibility with Central Alloy Steel, and when this company was taken over by Republic in 1930 he was made assistant district manager and a few years later was appointed chief metallurgist of the whole corporation.

Any society of undergraduates at a technical school, comprising students in any branch of engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, geology, etc., may be recognized by the Board of Directors in its discretion as an Affiliated Student Society, and its name, together with the names of its President and its Secretary, may be published in the MINING AND METALLURGY of the Directory of the Institute. The members of such a society will not be named individually on the membership list of the Institute, but may at any time be proposed for election as associates or junior associates of the Institute, in the usual way. 2. Membership in an Affiliated Student Society, certified by the official representative thereof, and accompanied with suitable testimony as to character and qualifications, will have special, weight with the Membership Committee of the Institute, in its consideration of the proposal of a candidate for membership or for Junior membership.

Experiments on the Rate of Heat Transfer from a Hot Gas' to a Cooler Metallic Surface Members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will be much interested in the subject of teat transfer from a hot gas to a cooler metallic surface, and although the book on this subject recently published by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., of New York, deals primarily with boilers, it contains a great deal of information which metallurgical engineers will find of great value. The book starts out with an introduction giving some of the current theories regarding this subject; it then describes in detail the experimental apparatus used, and the methods of conducting the experiment's and recording the data. Then follow some account of the determination of radiation losses in jackets and cooler; measurement of metal temperatures; detection and correction of errors; etc., concluding with a discussion of the results and derivation of corrective formula for heat absorption; heat pressure rate and specific heat of gas.

BEFORE an audience which included many notable members of the engineering profession, the John Fritz Medal was presented to Senator Guglielmo Marconi on July 6, 1922, in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, in New York. The medal was awarded for achievements in the development of wireless telegraphy, but all of the speakers emphasized the inventor's service to mankind, in saving life at sea, especially, as well as his remarkable scientific attainments. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE JOHN FRITZ MEDAL The John Fritz Medal is presented from time to time for notable achievements in applied science, as a memorial to the engineer and metallurgist whose name it bears, one of the charter members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The medal fund, contributed by friends of Mr. Fritz, is administered by representatives of the four national engineering societies. Seventeen awards have been made to men of eminent distinction in the various branches of the profession of engineering, whose names are more familiar to the civilized world than are the names of most of the presidents of the United States. Four of the medallists were present on the evening of July 6: Dr. Elihu Thomson, the dean of the electrical engineers, General Goethals, Orville Wright, and J: Waldo Smith, who developed the New York City water supply, system. In opening the meeting, Dr. Comfort A. Adams, president of the Board of Award, said in part: The profession of engineering knows no national boundaries. That the engineers of this country sense this fact deeply is evi-denced by the absence of any limitations as to nationality in the award of the John Fritz Medal. The engineer is seeking for the truth wherever it may be found, and it frequently happens that the most helpful sugges-tions for the solution of a particular problem are the results of the work of men of other nationalities on the other side of the world, whom we have never seen. Thus through this long range interchange of information and of ideas, there has grown up a feeling of real kinship among the engineers of the civilized world, a sense of interdependence and of the need and value of cooperation, in wide contrast with the all too prevalent sense of conflicting interests, of racial and national antagonisms of bitterness and misunderstanding. We often think of the nations of the earth as separated by walls or barriers, of various kinds and of various heights. Some of these are the natural results of evolution, for example, differences of language, customs and traditions; while others are more artificial, being maintained by law and dictated by fear, greed, and shortsightedness or ignorance. There is deep conviction that the degree in which we can abolish these barriers is a true measure of our progress towards real civilization, and that the destruction of these barriers is the only method of attaining that world-wide peace for which every

The American Society of Civil Engineers, by a vote of its membership of six to one, has favored the acceptance of the invitation of the three present Founder Societies, namely, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Institute of Mining Engineers, to become a, fourth Founder Society and share with the rest the occupancy of the Engineering Societies' Building. Fortified by this vote, the Board of Direction of the American Society of Civil Engineers has caused a contract to be entered into between, that Society and the present Founder Societies and the United Engineering Society. Work has already begun on adding three stories to the Engineering Societies' Building at a cost not to exceed 1250,000. This cost will be borne by the American Society of Civil Engineers, thereby making its contribution approximately equal to that of the other Founder Societies.

IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. Bethlehem Steel's Cambria Division coal cleaning and preparation plant, operated by Bethlehem Mines Corp., is located in Cambria County, Pa., about 2 ½ miles southeast of Ebensburg. Here, above ground, is the most modern coal preparation plant in the world. Below the surface is a new coal mine also referred to as "the most modern that could be built today." The preparation plant has a capacity of 1370 tons of clean coal per hr. It serves three Bethlehem mines, Heisley No. 31, Revloc No. 32, and the new Cambria Slope No. 33.

The Institute maintains for the use of members (and especially for the use of out-of-town members) a reading and writing room, where all usual office facilities are available, including telephone, telegraph, receipt, forwarding and care of mail and express packages, etc. A file of current magazines is also maintained in this room, and the Institute's staff will lend its best efforts to serving the members in connection therewith. The Institute also maintains for the use of its members free dressing rooms, library research department, etc. Attention is called to these facilities at the present time in the belief. that they may be especially useful to out-of-town members in connection with the Meeting.

FOR the second consecutive year, attendance at the Coal Division sessions far exceeded exoectations. Those in charge were continually faced with problems of finding seats and space for attending members. 115 seats were set - II~ for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division and approximately 175 members showed un. Since the hotel management would not serve more than the 115 it meant that 60 members were forced to eat elsewhere. This created hard feelings with some members. How- ever, officials of the Division were not able to obtain in advance any indication of this overflow crowd, but are suggesting to the New York Office that some means other than ticket sales be adopted to obtain an estimate of Division luncheon and dinner attendance. Members could be circularized prior to he meeting or they could be checked when registering as to the events they expect to attend. Under the inspiring leadership of Cadwallader Evans, Jr., Chairman, the Coal Division had a phenomenal growth during the year. Reporting at the luncheon meeting, Newel1 Alford stated that approximately 190 new members had been obtained. A few more years of continuing increase at this rate will make the Coal Division one of the largest Divisions in the Institute.

For many years the water pressure test has been used as a normal procedure to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of rock masses and discontinuities. Although the test has given evidence of problematic areas, the nature of flow and the so called equivalent permeability are seldom seriously affected by the testing tecnique. In order to improve the information on these points the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas de São Paulo - IPT, has developed an extensive program at laboratory and field research on the hydraulics at rock fractures. This paper summarizes the main items related to this research. Is shows that with only small improvements on field tests and some support of laboratory conductivity tests on natural rock joints it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the nature of flow in fractures, improve flow predictions and estimate the opening and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the transmissivity of natural joints or rock discontinuities.

This excellent paper by Dr. Colombo parallels quite closely the bench and pilot work done by the Hanna Research Laboratory on the Mesabi oxidized taconites. Because of the vast reserves and future ore requirements the need to perfect the selective flocculation-flotation process becomes very necessary. The selective flocculation process is a very efficient method of desliming, leaving a fairly clean, upgraded product for flotation. However, one of the problems that we have encountered in this process was some very fine, -2 micron liberated goethite in the slimes that did not flocculate. The complete slime removal is not necessary. We remove slimes to the extent of about 5% of the iron units. However, on difficult treating ores we would remove more slimes. The reclaimed water from our pilot plant has a turbidity of about 1000-3000 ppm. We can obtain lower turbidity water but to do this would involve additional lime as a tailing flocculant and we would run the risk of flocculating the entire ground pulp in the selective flocculation process because of the increased Ca level in the water. We have about seven different geological ore types out of 17 recognizable ore types that are treatable. All of these ore types require different degrees of dispersion and grinding which is a problem. University of Nevada's recent Bonanza Days celebration turned out to be the real thing when Kennecott Copper Co, presented the school with $30,000 for new laboratory equipment for the MacKay School of Mines, J. C. Kinnear, Jr., general manager of Kennecott's Nevada Div., handed the check to Stout, university president, Chemical Construction Inter-American Ltd,, signed a contract with Noranda Mines, Ltd. for construction of a sulphur-iron plant in the Niagara Peninsula. Work has been started and it is expected that the plant will be finished by summer 1954.

Early last March Mr. Jerome Coldren, an old miner add prospector, undertook a prospecting tour through the western part of Kansas, and discovered a very peculiar bed of rock, which yielded a white metal on fusion with soda. Mr. W. D. Church, city chemist at Topeka, examined the metal and found it to contain nickel. This discovery created much excitement, and was at first doubted. Many samples of the material, from a range of twenty miles, were sent to the Smithsonian Institution for examination ; and in every instance a qualitative test showed the presence of nickel, although the amount appeared to vary greatly. The ore is quite different from any other nickel-ore. It consists of a quartzose conglomerate from bean-size down, with much decomposed material between the pebbles, and the whole cemented by a more or less manganiferous limonite. In the qualitative tests, the nickel appeared to vary with the manganese. In all the tests, simple treatment with HCI dissolved a great deal of AI2O3. The principal deposit is near the top of a small hill on the divide between Smoky Hill river and Butte creek. The surface-rock is the conglomerate, and, at varying distances, stains of the limonite appear and gradually increase ; so that the ore is simply the lower portion of a bed of conglomerate which has been heavily charged with the manganiferous limonite. Below the conglomerate is a layer of selenite; below this, a soft sandstone, containing well-preserved fossils, and below the sandstone, a shale. From 2 to 6 per cent. of nickel in selected samples has been reported by different chemists; but the following two analyses on large samples show the average composition of the material:
