In any process wherein materials must be pelletized, a crucial period exists during the interval between the manufacture of the green pellets and their subsequent heat treatment. The pellets must possess sufficient strength and plasticity to withstand conveying and sizing. Also, they must be neither excessively brittle nor excessively plastic when placed in a bed on a traveling grate for heat treatment. An acceptable pellet, in the event sufficient forces are applied to cause its fracture, will merely split into two or three large fragments which would not drastically alter the permeability of the pellet bed. However, when brittle pellets are broken, they shatter so that the resultant fine particles either decrease the perimeability of the bed or become entrained in the gas stream and thereby cause dust problems. On the other hand, excessively plastic pellets may not break at all but may merely flatten. This would seriously hamper bed permeability. In the past, pellet evaluation has usually been left to the creative and artistic talents of the balling operators. A multitude of techniques have evolved, of which the most common is the simple compression test. For this test a hand-operated device loads single pellets to fracture, but reliability is strictly operator- dependent. Probably the next most common test is the drop test, which is conducted according to several different procedures. This is an important quantitative test for estimating the amount of handling a pellet will withstand. There are many other tests, such as pinching a pellet between the thumb and index finger, but none are capable of producing reproducible results.

Y.—One thought lias been running through my mind during the wholc of this meeting and that is that the scientific and the practical men must recognize very clearly their interdependence. The value of scientific classification of coal is going to be of the very greatest importance to the users, the practical men. Is not the scientific investigation and the great amount of work that is being done in a measure at least lost to the world? Therefore the scientific investigations and the practical needs of the users should bo brought as close together, and the work should be done as closely together, as possible; that is, the scientific man should know what the practical man needs, and the practical man should not feel that the scientific man is merely a theorist. Scientific investigation is going to have a great effeet and be of great valuc to the practical man who is trying to solve his problems. In the subject which I discussed' for instance, we must look to the scientific man to tell us why coal cokes in one way and not In another and why certain coals will do certain things and others, which appear on the surfacc to be generally similar, do not act in the same way. Need or Physical Data on Coal H. J. Rose, Pittsburgh, Pa.—There is a subject which is a sort of hobby of mine; that is, the need for what might be called critical tables of constants for coal. The chemist has big volumes giving constants, such as the density, solubility, specific heat, thermal conductivity and all other physical and chemical data that have been determined for chemical compounds. Data arc also available on many common materials, for example, the density, hardness, modulus of rupture or maximum crushing strength of swamp white oak as compared with some other wood. In fact, physical data for practically cvery hype of wood commercially produced in the world can he found. In the same way the metallurgical man has handbooks giving the properties of alloys, etc., but we havc very little tabulated information about coal. Our principal reference works are the volumes published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on the proximatc and ultimate analysis and calorific values of coals of the United States. That is 3 pioncer work of enormous value, but we have reached the point where we need more diversified information. Mr. Fulweiler raised the question of the relative strength of the different coals and cokes. Dr. Campbell and Dr. Ashley wanted to have some information on the resistance of coal to air slacking. It was brought out in the discussion that we want to know something about the coking properties of coal. There are any number of physical tests that we need, such as the thermal conductivity of certain coals, the coefficient of expansion, or the coefficient of friction; or other constants. A smattering of such information is scattered through the literature; for instance, a research worker in Wales will report a coefficient of expansion on Wclsh coals and one in South Africa will report something else for one or two kinds of African coals, hut it is difficult to find the information that is needed on our own coals. ALTHOUGH surveying at mining properties is fundamentally the same regardless of the method of mining, at Climax, due to the nature of the ground, the policy of advance development work, and extremes in climatic conditions, surveying practice has had to be revised to meet the specialized conditions of this particular type of mining operation. The company's mine is one of the largest underground properties in the United States. It has proved ore reserves of 275,000,000 tons, 60,000,000 tons of which have been broken. To date, 109,000 ft. of development drifting have been driven, as well as 40,926 ft. of development raising, 10,000 ft. of ventilation drifting and raising, 16,000 ft. of exploration drifting, and 206,000 ft. of diamond drilling. Normal production varies between 1.2,000 and 15,000 tons daily. Development work proceeds at a rate of 11/2 tons developed for every ton milled and with a development of 18,000 to 20,000 tons per day, the following crew is required to take care of mine and surface engineering

AS we contemplate the bestowal of the John Fritz medal year after year on men of wide-world dis-tinction in the various fields of engineering, men who in one way or another have given impulse and direction to the progress of mankind, the question becomes inter-esting as to what manner of man was John Fritz and what were the qualities that singled out his name to be so conspicuously associated with the world's great scientific and industrial achievements. If, as Lowell said, it is the duty of the nation to pro-duce great men, our country surely rose to her oppor-tunity when she guided and guarded the career of John Fritz. Starting life as a blacksmith with no advantages of education, without influential friends or the favor-ing accidents of fortune, he advanced steadily in use-fulness, power and respect of his fellowmen until by common consent he occupied the first place in the domain of the steel industry of this, country. The numerous honorary scientific memberships conferred upon him in this country and abroad attest the esteem in which he is held by his fellow engineers. Twenty years after his retirement from active business at the age of seventy, he lived to enjoy, as few men have been permitted to do, the fame and the friendships which he had so amply earned. His sterner qualities of industry, integrity and sterling character were re-lieved by unfailing human sympathy, humor and spon-taneous good-will toward his fellowmen. To all who

AT THE dinner at the Cosmos Club in Washington, tendered to Herbert Hoover on Jan. 5, on the occasion of his retirement from the presidency of the Federated American Engineering Societies, he made an informal speech in which he pointed out not only the unique position which the engineer now occu-pies by virtue of the new Federated Societies but also the opportunity that is thus presented for national service. In this connection and in pointing out some of the reasons for the present economic maladjust-ment, Mr. Hoover said in part: This body has entered upon a path of public serv-ice that is unique in the whole United States. The engineer has devoted himself all these years to the upbuilding of the material values of the United States. He has done that effectively more effectively than-has been accomplished in any other of the great countries of the world. The birth of this society marks the evolution of the engineer into an interest in public affairs. With his intelligence, his experience and training and the unique knowledge that he possesses not only of the material but the intangible values among our people, he is now organized so that his united voice may become heard outside of his profession. We have probably 175,000 engineers in our country, representing an intellectual possibility for service possessed by no other group. It is therefore an augury of real social development when the engineers of the United States join together for purposes of public service.

EVERY forward-looking mining company realizes the need for employing graduate mining engineers so that there will be a supply of qualified men from which to draw for company officers, executives, and mine managers. The mining industry is competing today with numerous other fields of engineering for its supply of technical men, many of which are more attractive than mining because of better pay, living conditions, and well- regulated company training programs. The Ontario Mining Association and the mining companies of Ontario are conducting a postgraduate training plan which if adopted in the United States, might well encourage top quality men to study mining.

The House Ways and Means Committee recently heard a bitter dispute over whether gasoline with lead is a worse pollutant than gasoline without lead. The lead industry is also squarely in the middle of this dispute for obvious reasons. Lead used in gasoline amounts to 270,000 tpy, or more than 254 of the annual total mined in the U.S. Few industries can face the loss of such a market without wondering how they are to stay in business. The lead industry picked up unexpected support in this dispute, however, when the AFL-CIO stepped up with outright opposition to the President's proposal to tax lead in gasoline.

THE distinction btween price reduction as a re-sult of lowering of production cost and price re-duction through unrestricted competition cannot be made too clear, because they are often interwoven in actual experience. Take the whole population of a town whose principal industry is shoe manufacturing as a concrete example. If the manufacturer is able to cut his price per pair in half because he has found out how to make a pair at half the cost, he will com-monly let a number of his men go, because reduction in production cost usually results from substituting cheap mechanical energy for expensive human energy. These people will normally find other employment. The workmen who remain employed usually earn more in dollars than they did before, and in spending it give employment where there was less before. Mining companies that initiate considerable enter-prises in foreign lands where the economic level is low, and where most of the people are busily but in-efficiently engaged in raising enough food to support themselves and their families, often find themselves confronted with an acute labor problem. If any con-siderable number of workers leave the land to work in and about the mines, those left on the land cannot raise enough food to keep them all unless they are taught better methods of agriculture and provided with equipment that will enable them to produce more with less expenditure of effort. Add to this the fact that managers commonly find that the "natives," as our British cousins designate them, usually need more food and a better balanced diet than they have been accustomed to in order to show anything above the lowest order of efficiency in industrial work,. and it is clear that to make a new industry possible in what may be termed an economic province involves increas-ing the productivity, not only of those who are em-ployed in it, but of the whole social group. It has already been pointed out that the employ-ment of large numbers of men in automobile manu-facture is only possible because the others have in-creased their productivity enough to turn out every-thing else that is needed without the help of the auto-mobile workers.

A CANVASS of the various institutions known or suspected to be giving courses dealing with petroleum and gas revealed the courses listed in the accompanying table, which includes a summary of the number of class hours, as a whole, of the courses listed. It will be observed that the situation is grati-fying. Courses are presented in different institutions in the main geographic sections of the country, so that students have no difficulty in obtaining education in this field. The committee believes that the courses that are offered in many institutions are so inadequate in amount as to make it unwise for students who have not had additional work to consider themselves trained in this field. We strongly urge the few schools now presenting the most adequate courses to develop these more fully, bringing their work up at least to 300 hours, and let other schools concentrate their energies in other fields.

IN the nonferrous sessions this year, magnesium wiggled its way into a dace of prominence such as it has never before enjoyed. This was evidenced not only by the number of papers presented on that metal but by the attendance at the meetings. The atmosphere permeating these magnesium meetings was similar to that which exists in a family with a new baby. Everybody crowded around to see what it looked like and then wondered whether it would be a success and credit to the family. Well. magnesium appeared to be a vigorous youngster, full of life, and raring to go. A close relative of maenesium named " aluminum, although much more grown up, also attracted much attention. [ ] ST. JOSEPH Lead Co., is entering the oil business. Andrew Fletcher, St. Joseph president, stated that plans call for a contract with the Continental Oil Co., to drill 11 exploratory wells. Six will be in Texas, one in southern Louisiana, one in northern Louisiana, and one each in California, Oklahoma, and Montana. St. Joseph is also negotiating a contract with the Zephyr Drilling Co., for wells in Wyoming and Colorado. St. Joseph is planning to drill another well on a 6000 acre plot in southern Illinois. Proxies issued before a special meeting of the board, said the new venture is not intended to change the general character of the company's business, or to involve a significant part of its resources. If gas, oil, or minerals are discovered in paying quantities, the company will develop and operate the deposits and dispose of the products for the joint account of Continental Oil and St. Joseph Lead. The mining company will contribute a proportionate share of the cost, but will have definite limitation of its obligation. The amendment to St. Joseph's certificate of corporation, passed by the board meeting, also extended the power of the company to include mining operations of all kinds.

My father, who in 1886 was one of the founders of the Michigan College of Mines, was Michigan State Geologist until his un- timely death in 1888.

Discovery of a deposit of magnetite ore estimated at 3 million tons and of quality sufficient to warrant mining has been located near Reading, Pa. by the Bethlehem Steel Corp. Last January; the company spent nearly $400,000 for about 1750 acres of farm land which had been valued at only about $50 per acre. It is expected that a pilot shaft 18 in. in diam will be sunk some time this spring. The ore body, delimited by diamond-drilling by Sprague Henwood, is said to measure roughly 2000 sq ft and 1000 ft thick, beginning 1500 ft below the earth's surface. In a continuing search for strategic minerals, the Atomic Energy Commission expects to put eight to ten diamond drilling rigs into the area 11 miles southwest of Blanding, San Juan Co., Utah early this year. The Commission's primary objective is the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation. Holes 140 ft deep are expected to be drilled, with solid bit drilling through overburden, mudstone, shale and sandstone overlying the area.

Our ever-increasing use of minerals has been the outstanding fact in our American economic development. The rise in our standard of living in the past century is without equal in human history. Nowhere in time or place has the man who works lived so well, or the man who cannot work been so well cared for. We live in a new world, even the poorest of us, that our forebears of 1849 could not have dreamed. That new world has come mainly from our use of minerals. Our per capita use of nonmineral products has grown too, but by only a modest amount. Food consumption per person has grown about 15 per cent in the past fifty years; lumber use per person ,has fallen 56 per cent and that of wood for fuel 65 per cent. Of all the products of field and forest, our use, per capita, may have increased by one fifth during the present century. In contrast, our per capita use of minerals has multiplied several times. Each of us uses 2% times as much steel and 16% times as much petroleum as our fathers used in 1900. In less than half a century our per capita consumption of all minerals has probably risen by 200 to 250 'per cent. Man once built with wood; today he builds mainly with brick and stone and steel. Once he traveled by the power of hay and oats; today he travels by the power of coal and oil. Rubber made from minerals is already better for some uses than rubber tapped from trees; before long it will be better for most and perhaps all uses. Even our ladies' graceful legs are clad in mineral fiber, where once animal or vegetable fiber would have covered them. Our high standard of living is a product of the machine.. The machine is made of minerals. The machine is driven by minerals. The machine age is a mineral age.
