In recent years, with the advent of new steelmaking procedures, the emphasis has turned away from conventional teeming and has been directed toward continuous casting. This paper points out the fact that there are still new methods being considered to decrease the problems and costs associated with conventional teeming. Although Inland has had no experience with the repair of mold lugs, we do find some problem with damaged ears associated with mechanically capped steel. When pouring bottle tops, any crane movement or leak from the pouring nozzle may result in steel over the top of the mold which, in turn, may result in the shearing of the mold lugs during stripping. Recent back pouring practices increase the chances of this occurring. At Inland's steelmaking shops, we have tried to combat this problem by various methods such as burning the steel from around the top of the mold at the pouring stand with oxy-gas torches. Last year, No. 4 BOF began a conversion from round to elliptically shaped bottle top caps. This change has greatly reduced the chance of splashing due to crane swing by increasing the dimension in the direction on normal swing. The answer to this particular problem is, however, tighter control of pouring performance. We are presently engaged in a process of re-education of personnel and experimentation with different materials and designs of nozzles, heads, and sleeves to help us achieve our goal.

INSTITUTE MEDALS AND PRIZES ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has five major awards to make annually for excellence in technical papers, as follows The Robert W Hunt Medal, The Hadfield Prize, The J E Johnson Jr , Award, The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members, and the President's Prize to junior members ROBERT W HUNT MEDAL The partners of Robert W Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules, 1 The award shall consist of two prizes, first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money, a certificate to accompany each prize The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to, the younger men, rather than the medal 2 The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee consider¬ing the awards In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improve¬ment of production and quality of material 3 A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval 4 The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute 5 The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist "

BETA brass (consisting of approximately equal atomic proportions of copper and zinc) exists as a random solid solution at high temperatures, but at low temperatures [ ] an ordered structure is stable, with the copper and zinc atoms occupying alternate sites on the body-centered-cubic lattice. On cooling, ordering commences at a temperature of 450° to 490°C., depending on the composition. The degree of ordering progressively increases at lower temperatures until it becomes virtually complete at about 100°C. The electrical resistivity of the alloy illustrates the changes clearly (Fig. I). This type of reaction has been a favored subject for study by physicists. An [ ] excellent summary of the theory is to be found in a paper by F. C. Nix and W. Shockley.1 All published data on electrical conductivity, specific heat and other properties agree in indicating that the ordering reaction in beta brass takes place so rapidly that it cannot be prevented or even retarded by quenching. THAT colleges and technical schools constitute a vital factor in our industrial system is being realized more and more of late years. Consequently it is desirable that there should be a constant interchange of ideas between the 'school and the industries and that there should be a more intimate contact between the student and his future employer. Business and industry demand certain proficiencies and qualifications of the student and he, in turn, sees certain rewards and advantages in the industry. . In a meeting of this kind, whose primary purpose is to promote a greater intimacy between the students and those men who are active in the mining profession, it is quite fitting that each state his demnds upon the other in order to establish a common understanding. It is probable that a student, not being conversant with actual conditions in the industry, may be unfair in what he asks of his employer. Therefore criticism, constructive or other- wise, is not only accepted, but is invited.

SILICIDE coatings on refractory metals are often applied by transporting a silicon halide vapor to a hot metal surface where dissociation or hydrogen reduction occurs. The subsequent chemical reaction to produce the coating requires diffusion of silicon or the refractory metal through the in situ silicide layer. This solid-state diffusion process step is often slower than the vapor-transport step and, therefore, rate controlling. This situation is analogous to the parabolic oxidation of metals in which the oxidation rate is controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. The purposes of this study were to 1) measure the rate of formation of MoSiz and MoSi2 coatings under conditions such that the silicide diffusion process is rate controlling and lower silicide compounds are not formed and 2) determine by a marker experiment whether silicon or the respective refractory metals are the principal diffusing species in the disilicides.

THE possibilities of separating and purifying metals by high vacuum distillation were examined by Kroll.1 He suggested vacuum treatment for the removal of zinc from the lead produced after Parkes desilverizing. The St. Joseph Lead Co. developed the first commercial vacuum dezincing process at their Herculaneum refinery, as described by Isbell.² The Broken Hill Associated Smelters at Port Pirie, Australia, has, after several years of pilot plant operations and fundamental investigations, developed a continuous process, which will be described briefly in a forthcoming publication." As the full-scale continuous vacuum dezincing plant at Port Pirie is still experimental, publication of full practical details of the plant will be deferred until the unit is operating as a normal part of the continuous refinery. This paper deals only with theoretical aspects of vacuum distillation processes, with particular reference to vacuum dezincing. The method of mathematical analysis is of general interest as it may be applicable to other metallurgical separations which have been investigated recently.4-6 Evaporation Processes At about atmospheric pressure, or higher, most liquids possess a boiling point—a temperature at which any heat put into the liquid is absorbed only as latent heat, not as specific heat. If a steady heat input is supplied, the liquid's temperature rises to this value, then remains constant while bubbles of vapor form beneath the surface. The rate of evaporation is determined solely by the rate of heat transfer to the liquid; the temperature of boiling is determined by the partial pressures of the volatile constituents in the liquid, and the total pressure above the surface. If the rate of heat transfer to the liquid is increased, the temperature remains constant, and the rate of boiling increases. When evaporating metals under vacuum, however, the partial pressures concerned are generally so small that boiling does not occur, because at even a fraction of a millimeter below the surface the hydrostatic pressure is usually too great to permit the formation of a pocket of vapor. In addition, the high thermal conductivity of metals tends to prevent the local superheating which is necessary for bubble formation.' Although this effect is doubtless also exerted when boiling metals at higher pressures, the magnitude will be less because the degree of superheat required to form bubbles is very much less at the higher temperatures involved. Under vacuum, therefore, evaporation of volatile constituents takes place only from the exposed surface, and the rate of evaporation depends upon the surface area, the surface concentration of volatile constituents, the surface temperature, and the partial pressures of volatile constituents immediately above the surface. If the heat input is raised above a certain level, the effect is not to increase the evaporation rate at constant temperature, but to raise the temperature of the liquid until at some higher level an increased rate of evaporation (and thus of latent heat absorption) again balances the heat input rate.? Many substances (including metals) have a very large intrinsic evaporation rate at quite low temperatures—far below their normal boiling points. However, at atmospheric pressure, the large numbers of atoms evaporated are almost completely deflected back into the liquid (or solid) surface by air molecules. Thus the back condensation rate is practically equal to the gross evaporation rate, and the net evaporation rate is practically zero. It can therefore be seen that an overall distillation rate depends not only upon the intrinsic evaporation rate, but also upon the ability of the volatile atoms to move away from the evaporating surface. This movement is facilitated by the provision of a condensing surface close by. Vacuum Distillation: The function of the vacuum above the evaporating surface is to remove foreign molecules, so that the chances of deflection of an evaporated atom back into its source are reduced. When the residual gas pressure is reduced so far that the evaporated atoms have a high probability of reaching a nearby condensing surface without suffering collision with a foreign molecule, the state of affairs is termed "molecular distillation." This process is practiced commercially today for the purification of numerous organic chemical products of high unit value, but not, to the writer's knowledge, for any metallurgical separation. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IN 1911, we published in the Transactions a brief account of the lateritic alterations of serpentine in eastern Cuba, producing the important iron-ore deposits of the Mayari and Moa districts.1 The special feature of that article was a quantitative treatment of the alterations, based on analyses, to show just what had happened in terms of chemical, mineralogical, and physical changes. Professor Kemp has published an interesting account of these ores, containing additional quantitative observations of his own, tending essentially to confirm the nature of the changes that bad been worked out.2 His discussion suggests to us the desirability of publishing certain additional quantitative data which were not included in our previous article. This seems especially desirable because quantitative measurements of lateritic alterations are rare, and this particular case may be regarded as typical of a fairly wide range of alterations of this kind. At the time of our examination of Mayari and Moa, deposits 29 complete analyses were supplied us by the chemists of the Spanish-American Iron Co., representing a graded series from the unaltered serpentine rock below to the ore at the surface. These analyses are given in the accompanying table. The mineralogical composition of the ores and rocks is comparatively simple and can be easily calculated from the analyses. In Fig. 1 the mineralogical changes from the serpentine rock below to the lateritic iron ore above, based on the analyses, are expressed in terms of weight, assuming alumina to have remained constant during the alteration. It is not easy by mere inspection of this table of analyses to determine what the progressive chemical changes have been in development of the ore. In order to bring this out clearly, the analyses have been graphically represented in Fig. 2 in such a fashion as to show the progressive additions and losses of substances during alteration.

Since we first agreed to present this talk we have learned that some of you may have been covering ground we intend to discuss: Bob Schechter, Daryl Tweeton, Don Seidel, Herb Burgman; however, the ideas were original when we began, "novel" as in the title of the talk, and whether our results are news or merely corroborative, we feel they point a direction that could be valuable to all. We worked with many of you in the past on using hydrogen peroxide in in-situ uranium leaching. Our talk today is not directly related to peroxide; it is, I hope, illustrative of Du Pont&apos;s interest in providing service to this industry in any way we can. The scouting work we are presenting was stimulated by field inputs: First, ammonium carbonate leaches cause restoration problems, primarily because ammonium ions exchange on clays with calcium. Second, sodium carbonate solutions, especially in South Texas deposits, can cause intolerable swelling of clays. From discussions with Dr. van Olphen, who wrote the book on clay chemistry, we inferred by comparison of the radii of the hydrated ions of the elements in these clay systems, that since potassium had about the same radius as ammonium, and sodium was much larger, potassium occupied a unique position to solve both problems. We are trying to assist the in-situ industry by pointing out new, potentially important directions. But, as with our previous work on sodium silicate to restore permeability, we feel the development phases can generally best be carried out in cooperative programs with companies directly involved with operations. DISCUSSION Test Parameters Now for the details: Our leaching tests were designed to note pressure-drop changes across the ore sample as the uranium was leached. Figure 2 shows the apparatus. The [ ] packed length was 20.5 inches (52 cm) with fifteen hundred grams of ore in the two-inch (5 cm)-diameter bed. Pressure drop was measured by manometer and feed rates were maintained constant with a tubing pump. The samples, from a South Texas leach site, were sealed in "Zip Loc" bags, frozen with "dry ice", crushed (still frozen) through six mesh, and blended before placement into the columns. (Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) THE paper presented to the Institute in 1910, by H. 0. Hofman, on Recent Progress in Blast Roasting,1 has called the attention of the iron industry to the adaptability of these processes to the reclamation of by-products such as flue-dust and blue billy, and the better preparation of concentrates and fine ores for use in blast-furnaces. The waste of valuable iron-ore through the production of flue-dust has increased at an enormous rate, and much of it has in reality been wasted as far as future recovery is concerned. Only in recent years has a possible future value been recognized, and the material stored. The increased use of Mesabi ores, which carry considerable fine ore, is principally responsible for the great increase in the production of flue-dust. The amount of fine material that is carried over depends on the fineness of the material and the velocity of the gases, and also to a very great extent on the regularity or irregularity of the working of the furnace. Attempts to recover a part of this loss have been made by recharging a portion of the production into the furnace, but as this material has been once carried out from the furnace, it is naturally in good shape to be carried out again. A recent practice at some works, is to soak the flue-dust thoroughly with water to give it more cohesiveness, but by many this is considered of doubtful advantage in the furnace, and the gases are in consequence heavily laden with moisture. There are vast deposits of magnetic iron-ores in the United States and Canada that are too low in iron for use at the present time, but which can be economically concentrated into very rich material ; in many cases the fineness of crushing necessary to secure proper concentration has prevented their

THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation possibly may be thought of as a specialized subject, of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of a mineral producers&apos; staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture.

In 1978, a multidisciplinary team from the University of Arizona, the Mines Project Group, conducted a study to examine reclamation alternatives for a proposed open-pit copper mine. The cost of a waste dumping plan designed by a mining consulting firm was determined as well as the cost of dumping configuration prepared by the Mines Project Group. The latter dumps were designed to be more socially acceptable and aesthetically pleasing, in addition to serving more creative end land uses than the dumps designed by the mining consultant. One dump configuration designed by the interdisciplinary team was the least expensive plan of all the alternatives considered.

CONSTRUCTION of a ground-water supply includes many operations, which do not end with completion of facilities. Evaluations must be made of the quality of water in various areas and the history of production. Following an analysis of geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data there must be an exploratory drilling program and a study of resulting information. When the well is completed a continuous survey of operating records and basic data is necessary, since designs for future wells are varied as more data becomes available for those already completed. As the following discussion must be limited to a single undertaking, the customary procedure will be outlined for development and construction of a ground-water supply in which more than three wells are involved. Parts of this procedure are applicable for all ground-water supplies.
