C. A. HEBERLEIN, New York, N. Y.-The results stated by Rey and Brevers are so startling that they are of great interest, as the concentration of a low percentage of cinnabar by differential flotation yields a high-grade concentrate in the presence of either arsenical or iron pyrite. The authors say: "Cyanide can thus be used to depress arsenopyrite and make a good cinnabar-arsenopyrite separation. A cinnabar-pyrite separation could probably be effected in the same way." Corrosive sublimate at the present price of mercury would be a very expensive reagent but the expense would be justifiable if a high rate of concentration could be obtained with a high extraction. On my request, special tests were made in the Punitaqui mill in Chile along the line suggested by the authors, without any improvement of either grade or extraction. As the recovery of the cinnabar in a complex sulphide of chalcopyrite and pyrite gave unsatisfactory results, I had tests made at the testing laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. at Stamford, Conn. As these tests turned out to be highly satisfactory, not only at Stamford but later at the mine, they are presented here. [ ] The pulp had a density of 22 and a pH of 7.8. Total time of conditioning was one minute. The reagent added was Texas fuel oil, 0.116lb. of 33.7 Bé. gravity containing 0.9 per cent sulphur. Frother, 0.062 lb. of No. 5 pine oil. Rate of concentration of mercury was 25.7: 11. [ ]

The best currently available description of the longitudinal mixing properties of a porous medium is an equation of the form which relates the effective longitudinal dispersion coefficient Dp to the molecular diffusion coefficient Do, the electrical resistivity factor F, the porosity <f> and a Peclet number. If the parameters dpa and m are determined for a porous medium of known porosity and electrical resistivity factor, then a dispersion coefficient may be estimated for a given flow rate and a given gas pair. A new method, featuring on-line gas analysis by thermal conductivity and on-line data reduction by analog computation, was developed and used to determine these mixing parameters for eight naturally occurring sandstones and two dolomite samples. The exponent m of the above equation was found to vary between 1.0 and 1.5. The characteristic length dpa in the above equation was found to vary between 0.25 and 1.9 cm, with an average value of 0.4 cm for sandstones. Measurements were made on two cores in which paraffin wax had been deposited by evaporation from a pentane solution. They indicated that the presence of an immobile phase such as connate water could increase the dispersion coefficients significantly. INTRODUCTION While the petroleum and chemical industries have studied the mixing of miscible liquids flowing in consolidated porous media and of miscible gases flowing in unconsolidated porous media, relatively little data have been presented to describe the mixing of gases flowing through consolidated porous media. Such data are of particular interest to the gas storage industry. For instance, the U. S. Bureau of Mines is storing large quantities of a rich helium-nitrogen gas in contact with a natural gas in a dolomite reservoir. Since the rich gas occupies only 15 percent of the total reservoir volume, it is essential that the extent of rich gas-natural gas mixing be predicted and understood as a function of rock properties, pressure and rate of movement. This investigation was concerned only with the determination of longitudinal dispersion coefficients. It is understood that a transverse dispersion coefficient, which characterizes mixing perpendicular to the direction of flow, may be an order of magnitude less than the coefficient characterizing mixing in the direction of bulk flow.5719 It should also be recognized that the use of any dispersion coefficient is in itself a simplification. It is necessary to assume that mixing in a porous medium may be characterized by the equation for flow in a single direction. A number of authors1 l8,19 have pursued the mixing problem, not in terms of the so-called "dispersion model" described by Eq. 1, but in terms of a "mixing cell model". This model supposes that a porous medium is constructed of a large number of small mixing chambers and that the concentration of the diffusing component within each mixing chamber is uniform. Fick&apos;s law (Eq. 1) assumes that there is no gross by-passing of one fluid by another, and that there are not stagnant pockets of gas in the system under consideration as discussed by Coats and Smith.8 These assumptions are not always valid for flow through porous media and it is important to recognize the limitations upon Eq. 1. was investigated by reacting thin discs of calcium oxide with gas mixtures of CO2, CO, and Son. Its value was 19,300 * 300 cal independent of temperature in this range. No solid solubility of sulfur in calcium oxide was detected within the limits of the experimental method and it is estimated to be below 0.025 pct by weight. The importance of lime in desulfurization is well-established but complete information on the pure phase equilibrium: CaO + 1/2 s2 = CaS + +02 [11 is not yet available. The goal of this work was to evaluate solid solubility of CaS in CaO and to determine the free-energy change associated with Reaction [I] at temperatures of 1400" to 1650°C. The equilibrium constant for Reaction [1] can be written: It is convenient to rewrite Eq. [2] in the form: where A = {Ps /PqJ1&apos;2 has been referred to&apos; as the "sulfurizing power&apos; of a gas mixture. In this work, thin discs of CaO were suspended in a vertical tube furnace and exposed to CO + CO2 + SOz gas mixtures having known values of A. The samples were then analyzed for sulfur. As expected, X-ray diffraction confirmed that CaS was the only sulfur-bearing phase formed at the relatively low oxygen pressures used. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Reagent-grade CaCO3 was pressed in a 3/8-in.-diam pill die and prefired in air to produce CaO discs weighing between 0.004 and 0.01 g. Several discs were used to provide a suitable weight for chemical analysis while maintaining a large surface area to react with gas mixtures. These were placed in a platinum mesh basket and suspended in the gas stream in the hot zone of a vertical tube furnace. Desired gas mixtures were prepared from cp grade CO and CO2 and anhydrous grade SO2. The method of soap bubble displacement was used to calibrate capillary flow meters. While this gave excellent results with CO and Con, some problems with bubble insta- bility and soap film "drag" arose with the use of SO2 at low flow rates. Hence, frequent sampling and analysis of gas mixtures was carried out to insure proper control of the ingoing SOZ. The furnace used for gas:solid equilibration was a vertical mullite tube externally wound with 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh wire having a diameter of 0.028 in. An inner tube of $ in. ID served as the reaction chamber having Pyrex ground joints sealed to the mullite to provide gas-tight connections at top and bottom. A Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple was inserted into a protection tube adjacent to the sample basket to measure sample temperature during a run. Constant-temperature control to 2C was observed at any desired set point within the range of this investigation. This was accomplished by a control thermocouple imbedded in the furnace windings which served to actuate an electronic controller wired for high-low operation. The sulfur analyses of the solid samples were carried out using a stoichiometric combustion technique based on the method of Fincham and Richardson. Some analyses were done using a modified evolution method3 but these were used primarily to check the results of the combustion method. The results were in good agreement but the combustion technique of-ferred an advantage in economy of time and material. CALCULATION OF GAS EQUILIBRIA Heating a given mixture of CO + CO + SO2 to high temperatures gives rise to a large number of product species. The details of calculating the partial pressures of these products of interaction and dissociation can be found in several references4,5 and need not be repeated here. The thermodynamic data selected for the major species in the gas mixtures are shown in Table I. Equilibrium constants from these reactions were combined with oxygen, carbon, and sulfur balances and a computer program written to facilitate the calculations. Some early difficulties in reproducing experimental results were finally traced to the effect of atmospheric pressure changes. No reference to consideration of this question had been found in the

The apparatus described in this paper was designed by the writer, in the year 1869, for use in the laboratory of the " American Silver Steel Works," at Bridgeport, Conn., where only the vacuum-pump was erected ; but on two subsequent occasions I have had the combined vacuum-pump and table-blowpipe constructed as represented in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a general elevation of the apparatus, the air-chamber being sectioned vertically; Fig. 2, a plan of the air-chamber; Fig. 3, a vertical sectiotnal elevation of the vacuum-pump, the section being on line C L), of Fig. 4, which is a horizontal section on line A B, of Fig. 3. The vacuum-pump is constructed of copper, and consists of a vacuum-chamber, E, supported upon the upper expanded end of a vertical pipe, Q. The vacuum-chamber is provided with four nozzles, C, F, I, D (Fig. 4), two of which are shown in section at A, B (Fig. 3). Passing vertically through the centre of the vacuum-chamber E, is seen the water-supply pipe P, whose lower extremity incloses an internal pipe p, which is supported, and placed in communication with the vacuum-chamber E, by means of the two elliptical nozzles n, n. The upper part of the pipe p is closed by a conical cap, and its lower end is in the same plane with the extremity of the watersupply pipe P, within which it is placed. The relative sizes of the pipes P and p are such that an annular adjutage, one-sixteenth of an inch in thickness, is formed between their lower extremities, through which the water from the supplypipe P passes into the pipe &, drawing any air that may be in the

THE Negaunee mine is at the east end of the Marquette Range, in the city of Negaunee, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was first discovered on this property in 1883 by diamond drilling. A shaft was sunk soon afterward, and the mine has been worked continuously ever since. The total shipments from 1887 to&apos; Jan. 1, 1945, were 20,417,587 long tons. The mine was taken over by the present operators, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., in 1903. During the past four years, 1941 to 1944 inclusive, the property has produced an average of nearly a million tons a year, and has employed more than 400 men. GEOLOGY The ore body at the Negaunee mine lies in a large syncline dipping about 15° to the west, the ore coming to ledge at the east end of the trough. The ore occurs in the Negaunee formation of the middle Huronian age, which consists of ferruginous cherts and slates through which intrusions of diorite have occurred. Although these intrusions of diorite have an important bearing on the formation of ore on the range, they are not important in this ore body. Some faulting has taken place along the diorite intrusions, or dikes as they are called locally, and also other faults are known to exist across the formation. These faults do not complicate either mining or development of the ore body. The footwall consists of jasper underlain with Siamo slate; the hanging wall is jasper and ferruginous chert. Fig. I shows a typical cross section of the ore body. The ore body is quite regular, about 120 ft. thick in the middle of the syncline and thinning out toward both sides of the fold. Its width ranges from 400 to 800 ft., the average being about 600 ft. The footwall is uniform in dip and strike, but irregular lenses of ore often extend 50 to 75 ft. up into the overlying jasper capping. METHOD OF MINING Ore in the Negaunee mine has been mined by top slicing almost exclusively since 1903. This method of mining has been employed because it is especially adapted to the size and shape of the Negaunee ore body, and to the soft, sticky nature of the ore as well as the generally soft, broken jasper capping. Development The ore body has been developed from six different levels with intervals varying between l00 and 125 ft. On the average, the dip causes a horizontal offset of 350 ft. per level, and under these circumstances it has been necessary to carry on considerable development in rock to make available the ore lying along the north and east footwalls. This is not as disadvantageous as might be supposed, because of reduced pressure and the accompanying saving in maintenance costs. The development of the

TURNBULL and his collaborators1,2 have developed the theory of homogeneous nucleation as applied, inter alia, to solidification of liquid metals. Vonnegut³ and Turnbull4 have shown that if a liquid metal is subdivided into small droplets a vast majority of them will undercool very considerably before solidification, generally to as low as about 0.8 of the freezing temperature on the absolute scale. The nuclei effective at small degrees of supercooling in bulk metal seem to be internal or surface heterogeneities, relatively small in number. If the metal is subdivided, those droplets that happen to contain such nuclei will solidify at a temperature not greatly below the true freezing point, but only a small part of the whole volume will be affected and the majority of the drops will under-cool to the much lower temperature at which homo- geneous nucleation occurs as a result of fluctuations. It occurred to one of the authors that an appropriate subdivision to give effective freedom from random nuclei is produced during the solidification of many alloys that contain a minor amount of a phase of low melting point, and that one might then expect marked undercooling of the distributed phase. Experimental: The alloys selected for initial study were copper with minor amounts of lead and bismuth, and aluminum with tin. In all these alloys, the major component freezes at a temperature not much below that of the pure metal, and there is little further change in constitution on cooling until the lower melting point constituent freezes in an almost pure state. Cooling curves were taken using the controlled heat flow method permitting approximate specific heats to be obtained. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were used, with the standard emf tables, since extreme precision was not needed. The crucible (3/4 in. id, 5/16 in. wall) was made of B & W K-20 insulating brick. It held about 10 cc of the alloy being investigated. The cooling rate was 2.5" to 2.9°C per min under a controlled temperature difference of 20°. Approximate specific heats were computed from the inverse rate curves together with data from a blank run and from a standard run with a copper cylinder of known heat capacity. The alloys for investigation were made from high-purity metals (99.99+pct) and cast into graphite molds. The castings were machined to fit the crucible and to provide a hole for the inner thermocouple. Cooling curves were taken after heating to a temperature about 50" above the melting point of the minor, lower melting-point, constituent. Results The lead phase in an alloy of copper with 5 pct lead did not undercool more than 3" below the melting point of lead (327°C) either as cast or after annealing to produce a new dispersion of the liquid phase. A copper-zinc-lead alloy with 23.75 pct zinc and 5 pct lead undercooled more but showed no thermal effect below 319°C. A cast alloy of copper with 5 pct bismuth undercooled to 249°C (M.P. bismuth 27l °C), but once solidification started it was completed at the same temperature. This was anticipated, since the bismuth forms a nearly continuous phase between the grains of copper, and a solid crystal nucleated anywhere would rapidly* con- sume the entire network of liquid, unless the physical continuity of the liquid were broken through volume changes, inadequate fluidity, or gas evolution. Similar arguments apply in the case of copper-lead alloys, where the lead-rich liquid forms a network along grain edges, though not grain faces. In both cases there would be a few isolated particles

Burghoff and Blank1 have pointed out that the creep properties of hard-drawn coppers are closely associated with their individual softening characteristics and have further shown that the creep resistance of various types of copper is improved, under certain circumstances, by cold stretching. In the design of certain types of electrical machinery, it is important to have the creep resistance as high as possible; furthermore, short-time creep strength is important since in many cases stresses are large only during warming-up and cooling-down periods. In this paper, data are presented showing the effect of cold work on the short time creep strengths of various types of commercial copper under several conditions. It is shown that trends from short-time creep tests are evident at longer times. Materials Used in the Investigation The coppers used in this investigation were commercial grade and of two basic types, oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) and tough pitch. Additions of silver in amounts of 15 and 25 oz per ton were added to each of the two coppers. The analyses of these six coppers are given in Table 1. Originally, they started as wire bars 4 X 4 X 54 in. A. square rod was made by hot rolling the wire bars to 9/16-in. rod in 8 passes. This rod was then cold drawn to 0.445-in.-diam rod and annealed for 3 1/2 hr at 1000°F. It was then cold drawn to 0.325-in. rod and again annealed at 1000°F for 3 1/2 hr. Hard square rods were then made by cold rolling to 0.257 X 0.257-in. rod. Soft wire was made from the hard- drawn material by annealing at 650°F for 3 hr. The final rolling was performed using a set of 9-in. grooved rolls revolving at 30 rpm, which produced square wires. Reductions of approximately 5, 20, 30, and 40 pct were obtained using several passes in the same direction for the large reductions. The 5 pct reduction by drawing was accomplished using a steel die having 2 parallel bearing surfaces. The die angle was 7 1/2 degrees and the wires were lubricated with a paste of ceresin wax dissolved in carbon tetrachloride. The speed of drawing was 13 fpm. Since work was done on only two sides of the wire simultaneously, it was necessary to rotate it 90 degrees each pass to insure uniform deformation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the various tempers are given in Table 2. The grain size of the an- nealed 0.257-in. wires was uniform and averaged about 0.035-0.045 mm. Experimental Procedures for Short-time Creep Tests Standard creep-test frames (Fig 1) were used for the testing. Special fixtures were designed to apply axial compressive and tensile loads to the copper wires. The compression specimens were 1 in. long and the ends were ground flat and parallel. The creep in compression was indicated by the movement of reference marks s-ratched on intersliding platinum strips attached to the moving heads of the fixture. The movement was measured with an optical micrometer fitted with a filar eyepiece on which the smallest division was 0.00005 in. The tensile creep specirriens were 4 in. long which provided ample gripping surface for the jaw-type grips. The platinum strips were attached to a one-inch gauge length of the wire and the creep measured as previously described. The activation energy for steady state creep above -500°C is observed to be independent of the applied stress although it varies from -67 kcal per mole at 2 at. pct Si to -100 kcal per mole at 11 at. pct Si due to changes in crystallographic order. The magnitude of the activation energy, by comparison with Fe-A1 alloys, indicates FeSi type of order in certain alloys. X-ray results confirmed the presence of FeSi type of order. It is proposed that dislocation climb is the rate controlling mechanism for all the alloys. It has been demonstrated that when a diffusion mechanism is the rate controlling process, the formation of a superlattice in brass,1 Fe3A1,2 Ni3Fe,3-5 and Feco6 1) increases the creep resistance, and 2) increases the activation energy for steady state creep. Furthermore, a study of creep in Fe-15 to 20 at. pct A1 alloys7 has revealed that as the alloy composition approaches the long-range order field, there is an increase in the activation energy for steady state creep which is thought to be due to an increase in short range order. Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys are similar in that they both form the DO3 superlattice in which aluminum or silicon atoms have only iron atoms as first and second nearest neighbors. There are, however, two important differences between the alloy systems: 1) The superlattice formation at -350°C commences at -10 at. pct si8 as compared to -20 at. pct Al,9 and 2) Fe-A1 alloys form a FeAl (B2 type) super-lattice where aluminum atoms have all iron first nearest neighbors even at 22 at. pct Al, but so far no similar FeSi superlattice has been observed. With the similarity between Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys in mind, alloys of iron with 2 to 11 at. pct Si were examined for variations with composition of the activation energy for steady state creep and of creep strength. The temperature range of greatest interest was above 1/2 TM (TM is the absolute melting temperature) where it is usually observed that diffusion is the rate controlling process. A subsidiary X-ray investigation of the Fe-Si system was undertaken in an attempt to define the position of the order-disorder boundary as a function of cooling rate. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS a) Creep. Specimens whose gage length was 1.5 in. and with a cross-section 0.04 by 0.08 in. were strained in tension by a lever-arm arrangement, and the load was adjusted between each creep test to maintain constant stress. The apparatus and mode of operation have been fully described in a previous publication.7 As each test produced a creep strain of 0.25 pct, the variation in stress during the test was negligible. Creep strain was measured at the end of one of the alloy steel grips by a displacement transducer with the out-of-balance potential being recorded on a variable speed recorder. The full-scale deflection of the recorder could be varied in steps to give limits of sensitivity of between 0.1 and 0.001 pct creep strain. The alloys, Table I, were made available by the Metallurgical Department, National Physical Laboratory (N.P.L.), england,10 and by the Research Department, General Electric Co. (G.E.), Schenectady, N.Y. They were hot worked at -850°C, warm worked at 550° to 650°C, and recrystallized in vacuum at -750°C to give a grain diameter of -0.1 mm. All the alloys had a very low impurity content; those from the N.P.L., for which a complete analysis is available,&apos;&apos; show carbon less than 0.026 pct, manganese less than 0.006 pct, and oxygen plus nitrogen less than 0.0024 pct. b) X-ray Procedure. A General Electric XRD-5 X-ray set with a focussing lithium fluoride mono-chromator in the diffracted beam, and a pulse height analyzer to eliminate harmonic wavelengths of the cobalt radiation, was used to investigate the structure of several very fine grained (grain diameter <.01 mm) Fe-Si alloys after the following heat treatments: 1) Quenched from 700°C, 2) slow cooled from 650°C (-40°C per hr), and 3) very slowly cooled from 400° to 100°C (10°C per hr with a 24 hr anneal every 100°C). The method of obtaining the diffraction pattern over the range of 20 from 15 to 45 deg was to count for at least 100 sec every l/3 deg with a slit subtending 1 deg in 20 at the focus; the probable counting error was less than 2 pct.

THE importance of aluminum-silicon alloys in the light alloy field is now generally recognized. Where silicon was once considered detrimental to the properties of aluminum, useful alloys now contain as much as 13 per cent. Furthermore, silicon is present as an impurity in aluminum of even the purest grades. Iron is another important impurity in aluminum and like silicon is found in small quantities in the purest aluminum available today. The manner of occurrence of iron and silicon in commercially pure aluminum and many of its alloys exerts, a very pronounced influence upon their properties. The effect of large quantities of iron in aluminum-silicon alloys is so detrimental that it has been found necessary to limit the allowable maximum percentage to as low a figure as is consistent with quantity production and satisfactory physical properties. The intimate relation existing between iron and silicon in aluminum and aluminum alloys makes necessary a more complete knowledge of this ternary system. This paper is divided into two principal parts, dealing respectively with aluminum-silicon solubility equilibria and the constitution of aluminum-iron-silicon alloys.

After considerable intercommittee correspondence a letter was received from. E. DeGolyer under date of Jan. 25, 1935, in which he discussed the possibility of modifying rather than discarding the Rule of Capture. He summarized his proposal as follows:

The effect of production history of a well on the results of two-rate flow tests, and conventional build-up analyses was investigated. The effect was examined by means of digital computers and an R-C network model, respectively, for wells with infinite and finite radii of drainage. For systems which behave as infinite, it was found that production history and the duration of production at constant rate prior to the initiation of the test have important effects on the results. During build-up time equal to about one-fourth of the stabilized time, correct permeability-thickness product calculations can be made. For wells with finite radii of drainage, the time was determined during which the straight line can be satisfactorily used for permeability-thickness product calculations in case of drawdowns and build-ups. On build-ups, the dimensionless time (based on the external radius) during which the straight line gives reliable results was detertriined to be about 1/12. This is one-fourth as long as that of the drawdown. The investigation was done theoretically, and subsequently was verified by R-C network model runs. General interpretive rules were formulated which, if not followed, could lead to serious errors. Moreover, a recommended testing procedure is reported. INTRODUCTION The method used by most reservoir engineers for estimating formation characteristics in a producing well is the analysis of pressure build-up data. The method originally devised by Horner&apos; makes use of the point source solution to the diffusion equation. This solution is approximated by a logarithmic function and the superposition principle is employed to arrive at the well known pressure build-up equation:where q, the flow rate, is in reservoir B/D; ft is in cp; kh is in md-ft; At is the shut-in time; and t is the producing time. At and t are in any consistent time units. Ey. 1 is applicable to a well of unlimited drainage radius which produces at a constant rate q from zero to time t and is then shut in. Such a constant production rate seldom obtains in practice. Therefore. a correction term must be applied to Eq. I to account for the varying rate. Two theoretically accurate methods are available for treating the variable rate case. The first, originally derived by Horner,&apos; is based on the application of the superposition theorem. It requires knowlege of production history of the well as a function of time and results in lengthy and laborious calculations. The second t*q* niethod is suited for short production tests and requires that the shut-in time be at least one and one-half times the production time. A third method which is not based on any theoretical justification and which was suggested by Horner as a "good working approximation" is the one used by the majority of reservoir analysts. especially when the well has been producing for a long time and the t*q* method is not practicable. The key to this method is in choosing or determining the t that appears in Eq. 1. Horner suggested using a corrected time t, in place of t. t, is calculated by dividing the total cumulative production by the last established rate. Therefore, a normal procedure of pressure build-up testing is to stabilize the well at a constant rate for at least 24 hours before shut in and to use the stabilized rate to calculate t,. The analysis is then made by plotting either or P. and examining the resulting plot for the expected straight line to calculate kh and the original reservoir pressure. Recently, Russell" proposed a method for determining formation characteristics from two-rate flow tests. His method reduces to pressure build-up if the second flow rate is zero. Russell uses the Horner simplified procedure for calculating a corrected t,. His method also requires the stabilization of the well at a constant rate q which is used to calculate t,. Theoretically, the above procedure is valid for a well with an unlimited radius of drainage or with a limited radius as long as the boundary effect has not been felt by the well. Several authors&apos;&apos; derived formulas which allow the estimation of time during which limited reservoirs behave as infinite ones and, thus, can be treated by unsteady-state mechanics. One equation derived by Swift and Kiel&apos; terminates the application of unsteady-state theory when the drainage radius reaches one-half the reservoir radius. I would like to congratulate the authors on an interesting paper and, in particular, on their justification of the use of superposition in treating gas wells. They state, however, that no theory has previously been developed lor treating the variable rate drawdown case. In a paper published a few years ago by my colleagues and myself, a method is described which allows a constant rate drawdown curve to be derived for any well. regardless of real rate variations. This method has the great advantage that it is not necessary to make any assumptions regarding the form or uniformity of the reservoir, and the derivation suggested by the present authors is simply an idealized case of our more general treatment. In the light of several years&apos; experience in the derivation of constant rate drawdown curves: I would like to point out that the method proposed by Odeh and Jones may lead to confusing answers, particularly if applied over an appreciable time interval. The reason is that, if pressures are measured when a well is flowing, non-linearities in plots like Figs. 1 and 2 can arise due to either (1) changes in the skin factor with time and/or flow rate, or (2) an inhomogeneous reservoir. Separation of these two effects is only possible if some of the pressures used in the analysis are measured when the well flow rate is 0 or, in other words. during brief shut-in periods. Among the persistent experimenters of the present century no one man is more widely and favorably known in the metallurgical world than the late Peter Spence of Manchester, England, to whom we are indebted for many of the successful processes in the manufac ture of acids and alkalies, and for much of that perfection in me chanical detail which goes so far towards insuring success. For the past twenty-five years—a period covering the greatest changes in soda-processes and a revolution in acid-manufactures ef fected by the substitution of pyrites for brimstone—Mr. Spence was constantly engaged in perfecting the plant for the economical treat ment of pyritous ores; and no text-book has been complete without reference to his many inventions, patented or otherwise. The results of his labors for the past six years were not given to the public, by reason of the active competition existing among man ufacturers on the continent of Europe and in Great Britain ; but it was well known and conceded that the crowning triumph of his .life had been achieved in the successful working of his automatic desulphurizing furnace, which mechanically calcined "smalls" or finely crushed pyrites—the bugbear of all chemical manufacturers. IN the Wall Street journal for March 1, 1941, was a tabulation of the construction under way or under negotiation by thirteen iron and steel companies for a predicted increase in annual coke production of 3,165,600 tons. That even this figure was short of the mark is indicated by other plans, then being considered, for a later expansion of 2,610,000 tons additional. Considerable progress has already been made on thin program, for approximately 500 new ovens were put in operation in 1941. and well over 200 should be completed in 1942. These figures include a number of units that replace older and obsolete equipment.

IT is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.1-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.1-6, It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by the use of acute dies.2 The actual stress distribution in drawn .tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7-9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process: Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal.1-10 MATERIALS AND PREPARATION The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.‡ This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2 -in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The wall of the tubing becomes thicker during sinking, as previously observed 4,5 The increases in wall thickness were 3, 7 and 9.5 per cent on the average for 6, 20 and 33 per cent reductions in diameter, no effect of the contour being noticeable. The reductions mentioned throughout this investigation do not consider this fact, but are reductions of the outside diameter. For the evaluation of the residual stress two fundamentally different methods were used. The approximation method1,11 of splitting a certain length of tubing was employed to obtain a bird&apos;s-eye view of the effect of various drawing conditions on the circumferential stress measured by the diameter change occurring on splitting. In connection with certain cooperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers&apos; privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.)! an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent, elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was twofold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The grcatcr part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. As a result much information as to their nature and their effects upon the steel and something in regard to some of the conditions that favor their development has been obtained.
