THE 122d meeting of the Institute was held in the Lake. Superior Copper and Iron Country Aug. 20 to Sept. 3, 1920 with an approximate registration of 1100 members and guests. This is the 'first visit of, the Institute to this vicinity since 1904 although previously it held meetings there every six or, seven years. 'The eastern party assembled at Buffalo and sailed on the S. S. "Tionesta ". on Friday morning, Aug. 20, arriving at Houghton, Mich., Monday, Aug. 23. En route stops were made at Detroit, where sightseeing auto trips were taken, and at Mackinac Island, where a short stop permitted a visit to the picturesque and historic Fort Mackinac.

FOR a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At -the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture f propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods f manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual -blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position- for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this practice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface f each blade must be chipped too the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy, as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the' work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin f the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days f foundry work and about the same length of, time for the machining. Through the use f the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity, with any particular propeller-wheel design,

CAPTAIN JOHN H. BALLAMY John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on August 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plymouth, Pa., in 1886 and graduated from the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. He continued this diligent and energetic practice for many years. For sixteen years he continued in the employment of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company's coal mining department, first as a practical miner, next as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. CAPTAIN JOHN H BALLAMY. Captain Ballamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on August 9, 1918.

The enterprises based upon the industrial minerals are diversified in geologic habit, mining systems, processing techniques and marketing methods. Nevertheless, in 1972 these enterprises faced many of the same frustrations and hopes and knotty problems and crucial decisions. Volume and profits were generally improved but were uneven in extent and effect. The U.S. cement industry, for example, was unable to meet demand in major markets. It was constricted by a frozen low-level price structure, faced expensive pollution control measures and watched heavy imports penetrating its markets from several European nations, Mexico and Canada.

The effect of ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid on chrysotile asbestos was investigated. Ultrasonic energy was effective in fiberization of chrysotile crudes as well as standard grades of milled asbestos fibers. Treated samples of several grades of milled fibers had increased wet bulk volumes and decreased settling and filtration rates compared to untreated fibers. Ultrasonics may be a method for fiberization of chrysotile without decreasing length or use of chemical additives that alter surface properties. Cavitation of the liquid on the surface of fiber bundles is believed to be the cause of the fiberization. It was found that ultrasonic energy greatly increased the rate of precipitation of latex on asbestos. When chrysotile asbestos fibers require additional opening or fiberization, the usual method employed is some type of high speed impact or grinding to open the fibers and produce a larger surface area. These methods always cause some degradation in length due to breaking of fibers. In addition, the efficiency of mechanical methods decreases as the diameter of fiber bundles decreases. Chemical methods have been proposed and it is claimed that fiberization down to individual fibers of 200-300 A diam is possible with some wetting agents. However, large amounts of reagent are required, approximately EDWARD MARTINEZ is with Central Research Laboratories, American Smelting and Refining Co., South Plain-field, N.J. TP 63H226. Discussion of this paper, submitted in duplicate prior to Mar. 15, 1964, will appear in SME Transactions, September 1964, and AIME Transactions, 1964, vol. 229. 50 pct of the weight of fiber treated, and some of the wetting agent remains on the surface of the chrysotile and cannot be removed by any solvent which does not destroy the asbestos.' This investigation was directed at determining whether ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid would be effective in fiberizing chrysotile asbestos. Samples of asbestos crudes and commercially milled fibers were treated; settling and filtration rates of treated and untreated milled fibers were obtained. EQUIPMENT A Westinghouse Corp. ultrasonic cleaning system WEHH was used in this investigation. See Table I for a breakdown of this ultrasonic unit. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fiberization of Chrysotile Crudes: Samples of chrysotile crudes were pulled apart with tweezers so that coarse bundles of fiber approximately 1/16 in. in diam were obtained. The bundles were put into a bottle with 200 ml of methanol and the mixture placed into the ultrasonic tank for 30 min at a power output of 1200 w. The test was repeated using water instead of methanol. During the irradiation it was noted that the surfaces of the bundles were being fiberized. The liquid eventually became cloudy with dispersed solids. Fig. 1 is an electron micrograph of the fibers, some reduced to unit dimensions, and a fine material released by the ultrasonic energy. The platy particles in Fig. 1 were identified by electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis as brucite, Mg(OH)2, which must have been intergrown in the chrysotile crudes. Electron micrographs of bulk specimens of chrysotile have shown a fine material filling the interstices between tubular fibers.2,3 Electron diffraction patterns of the fine material collected after ultrasonic treatment indicate that it is amorphous. After decanting the solution, bundles of chrysotile remained somewhat decreased in diameter. Continuing the ultrasonic irradiation of the remaining material resulted in additional fiberization. The opening of the fibers occurred in both methanol and water. Cavitation of the liquid by the ultrasonic energy is undoubtedly responsible for the fiberization. EFFECT of elements on the solubility of carbon in liquid iron is useful in calculating and correlating a number of thermodynamic properties as shown elsewhere in detail.' Kitchener, Bockris, and spratt2, and later Turkdogan and Hancock3 have investigated the effect of sulfur on the solubility of carbon at various temperatures and concentrations. For any chosen sulfur concentration, the solubility of carbon reported by Kitchener et al. is considerably lower than that by Turkdogan and Hancock. It was therefore felt that a reinvestigation of this problem was necessary. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD An alloy of Fe-C-S .was prepared with electrolytic iron and ferrous sulfide melted by induction in a graphite crucible, 4 in. high 1 1/2 in. ID under a CO-atmosphere. The temperature, held at 1500" ± 5°C in all experiments, was measured with a Pt-Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouple immersed into the melt. In order to assure saturation with carbon, the melt was stirred with a graphite rod. After approximately 1 hr at 1500 °C, a sample was obtained by sucking the melt into a silica tube, 4 mm ID. The sample was then analyzed for carbon and sulfur by usual methods. RESULTS The results are presented in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1 with the individual values of Turkdogan and Hancock.3 Scattering in the data is equivalent to 3 pct or less in carbon analysis. The broken line represents the empirical equation obtained by Kitchener et al. from their data. It is evident that the present data are in good agreement with those of the former investigators but in disagreement with the latter. The cause for this discrepancy cannot be readily offered since the experimental methods in the three investigations were nearly identical. Additional evidence corroborating the author's results may be presented in the following manner. The difference between the solubilities of carbon in the ternary Fe-C-X melt with a small concentration of any element X, and in the binary Fe-C melt is %?C = %CIII-%CII [1] where %?C is the change in solubility, and %CIII and %CII are the solubilities in the ternary and the binary systems respectively. WalSH, Chipman, King, and rant' have measured the water content (as hydrogen) of actual steel-making slags. An average water content of 290 ppm was found for basic open-hearth tapping slags and 114 ppm for acid open-hearth slags. Upon equilibration of these slags at 1550°C with a 25 pct H20-75 pct Nz atmosphere, the water content increased to about 410 and 300 ppm for the basic and acid slags, respectively. Walsh et al. concluded that an acid slag was thus relatively far removed from equilibrium, and that basic slags showed a closer approach to equilibrium, with the water vapor in the furnace atmosphere. Herasymenko2 contended that these conclusions were unjustified, as the oxygen pressure used in the equilibration experiments, ;bout 5 x X atm, was quite different from that found in the furnace. Consequently, during the experiments the slag composition would have changed due to oxidation of ferrous iron. As an extension of Walsh's work and to attempt to clarify this matter, the solubility of water in a basic open-hearth slag was measured as a function of oxygen pressure. Similar measurements were also made on synthetic silicates in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiO, system. The experimental technique has been described previously by Walsh et a1.l and Uys and King.3 Samples of the basic open-hearth finishing slag, contained in 10-cc platinum crucibles, were equilibrated at 1550°C with atmospheres of different oxygen pressure but constant water-vapor pressure, Ph~o = 0.192 atm. Calculations, as well as measurements, indicate that this figure approximates the water pressure of the combustion gases in a steam-atomized, oil-fired open hearth. Oxygen pressures in the open hearth can vary from 10"2 atm in the combustion gases to between l0-' and 10" atm in the steel bath. The former figure depends on the combustion practice and the latter on the carbon content and temperature of the bath. The oxygen pressure of the slag should lie somewhere between these extremes and is expected to be closer to that of the steel bath than that of the combustion gases. Oxygen pressures were therefore varied between 10" and 6 x l0 atm. At the lowest pressure the slag "puffed up" when quenched (indicating possible loss of water) so experiments were not conducted at lower oxygen pressures. The results are shown in Fig. 1, which includes the water content of the slag "as sampled". The results show that the water content of the slag increased appreciably on equilibration with water vapor at 0.192 atm pressure and that the water solubility apparently decreases with increased oxygen pressure. The solubilities found are comparable to those of the Li20-Ca0-Si02 system.3 Work with synthetic slags in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiOz system was performed at 1500" C, with Ph20 = 0.192 atrn and for oxygen pressures varying between 10"2 and 10-lo atm. Samples for chemical analysis were prepared as described by Larson.4 The results are shown in Fig. 2. Some low-silica melts tested at low oxygen pressures "puffed up" when quenched and analyzed less than 100 ppm water; these results are not included in Fig. 2. The melts containing 40 mol pct silica also showed a tendency to "puff up" during the quench, when they were tested at the lowest oxygen pressure. These results indicate that, at constant silica content, the solubility of water decreases somewhat with increased oxygen pressure. The effect is, however, small considering the wide range of oxygen pressures studied. Also, at constant oxygen pressure (above about lom5 atm) the solubility increases

A method of stability analysis of underground opening by the limiting equilibrium approach is presented. The Coulomb shear failure criterion is employed to find possible fracture surfaces and to evaluate the shear strengths along them. The normal stresses required for the calculation of shear strength, and the shear stresses for the calculation of total shear force along the fracture surfaces, are obtained by the finite-element method of plane-strain analysis. The factor of safety against Coulomb shear failure is calculated as the ratio of the shear strength to the shear force along a fracture surface, similar to the practice in slope stability analysis. Four shapes of openings are analyzed, with three ratios of horizontal lithostatic stress and four coefficients of internal friction. The critical fracture surfaces found by this method of analysis are consistent with the arching of roofs and slabbing of ribs commonly observed.

During the examination of various commercial brands of copper wire bars, which had exhibited different degrees of adaptability for being drawn into fine gages of wire by the present-day high speed machine, it was found that each brand had a more or less characteristic crystal macrostructure. Self-diffusion coefficients of aluminum have been measured by the capillary reservoir technique in liquids of the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 system containirg equimolar portions of CaO and SiO2, in the temperature range 1400o to 1520oC. For the melt containing 6.0 mole pct Al2O3 the results can be expressed by the equation D = [(4.3 * 0.3) x 104] exp [(-85,000 * 17,500)/RT]cm~sec-'; for the melt containing 12.5 mole pct Al2O3, by the equation D = (5.4 i 0.2) exp [(-60,000 * 10,00O)/RT] cm2sec-: A concept of the constitution of these melts has been developed which proposes that the ratios O/(Si +Al) and Al2 O3/CaO determine the dominant species present. In recent years considerable work has been done on the system CaO-SiO2-A12O3 with a view to elucidating the structure of liquids of this system. Conductivity,' electromotive force, 3 density,4 and activity5 measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem, but as yet there is no entirely satisfactory theory that can account for all the observed experimental results. In principle, measurements of self-diffusion coefficients should give further information which is not obtainable in other ways. Self-diffusion coefficients for calcium, silicon,6 and oxygen7 have been measured. The present investigation extends the series of self-diffusion coefficient measurements to include aluminum and develops a concept of constitution for liquids of this system which is compatible with all the observed experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used in the measurement of the self-diffusion coefficient of aluminum was the capillary-reservoir method,8 A126 being incorporated in the melt contained in the capillary and inactive aluminum in the reservoir melt. This method was chosen because it minimizes convection currents' in the diffusion zone. It has the further advantage that the boundary conditions are such that a slight modifica- tion of Anderson and saddington's8 solution of Fick's Law yields an equation which requires measurements only of the length and the initial and final average specific activities of the solidified melt within the capillary. where t is the diffusion time, Co is the average specific activity of the melt contained in the capillary at t = O, C is the average specific activity of the melt contained in the capillary at t = t, 1is the length of the capillary, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient. The equation is of somewhat different form than those previously applied to high temperature diffusion studies because the specific activity of the melt in the reservoir was negligible both before and after diffusion. The diffusion apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consisted of a silicon carbide resistance furnace containing the inactive melt in a graphite crucible, internal dimensions 7/8 by 4 in., enclosed in a 1 1/4- by 1 1/2- by 30-in. McDanel tube. A 3/8-in. McDanel thermocouple sheath to which graphite radiation shields and a graphite protection tube were affixed, was used to hold the capillaries. By moving this sheath through a rubber seal at the top of the McDanel tube the capillaries could be lowered into or raised out of the melt. Temperature was measured with a Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple which was calibrated periodically against a standard couple. The furnace temperature was controlled to ± 5°C through the thermocouple immersed in the melt. Temperature variation over the depth of the melt was less than ± 3°C. The inactive melts were prepared from pure native quartz, assaying better than 99.9 pct SiO2, A.R. grade A12O3 and A.R. grade CaCO,. Polycrystalline tensile specimens of various Zr-0-H alloys have been tested at 298°, 178°, and 77°K. Solute oxygen and hydride precipitates in quenched alloys made individual contributions to the yield strength at 0.2 pct strain which combined to produce a resultant strength increment, a,., Ductility changes which were ohserved can he interpreted in terms of the various oxygen and hydrogen concentrations, testing tem -peratures, and dispositions of the hydride. ADDITIONS of oxygen in solid solution were known to increase the yield and tensile strengths of polycrystalline zirconium as early as 1951.' More recently, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for prism slip in zirconium single crystals was also shown to be affected by the solute oxygen impurity.' This latter work also demonstrated that large increments of strength could be contributed by the finely dispersed zirconium hydride precipitates that are present in quenched Zr-H alloys.3 It was concluded that the combined strengthening due to alloying could be expressed by where to is the increase in the CRSS due to solute oxygen alone and TH is the increase due to finely dispersed hydride precipitates. Eq. [I] is analogous to one used to express the combined strengthening effects of work hardening and neutron radiation damage.4 Eq. [1] was verified only indirectly and for only small amounts of the impurities—up to 0.14 at. pct 0 and 0.63 at. pct H. The present investigation was undertaken to obtain a more direct verification of the validity of the form of Eq. [1] for this system and also to determine the combined effects of oxygen and finely dispersed hydride precipitates on the tensile strength and ductility of polycrystalline zirconium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were machined from the same rolled billet of Kroll zirconium used in the earlier study.' These measured 38 by 4.7 by 0.5 mm and had 10-mm gage lengths which were 2.8 by 0.5 mm. Each specimen was ß-annealed in vacuo at 1173°K for 15.5 hr and a-annealed at 1073°K for 4 hr to D. G. IMD______________ give an equiaxed structure with grain diameters averaging 0.06 mm. Oxygen was added by allowing the metal to react with a known quantity of oxygen during the 0 anneal and known quantities of hydrogen were added during the a anneal. Each alloy was encapsulated in Pyrex under vacuum, annealed at 873°K for 4 hr, quenched into ice water, and polished by immersion in a solution of 46.75 vol pct H2O, 46.75 vol pct concentrated HNO3, and 6.5 vol pct HF (49 pct) at 298°K. Special heat treatments given to a few specimens are described in the results below. Tensile tests were done on an Instron machine and were begun within 20 min after the quench, except where specified otherwise. Tests at 298°K were in air, at 178°K in acetone, and at 77°K in liquid nitrogen. All tests were at a strain rate of 8x sec-1. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Yield Stress at 298°K. The compositions of alloys and the corresponding yield stresses (0.2 pct strain) are given in Table I. A plot of the yield stresses of the oxygen alloys, A, B, C, and D, indicates that varies linearly with CO1/2, where Co is the oxygen concentration, Fig. 1. This is in accord with Fleischer's6 theory for solution strengthening if the oxygen atoms do not cluster, or the cluster size remains constant with increasing oxygen concentration. Numerous designs of linings and accessories, including dams, lifters, and heat exchangers, contribute greatly to kiln efficiencies. Greater conductivity is achieved with basic brick than with fireclay and high-alumina refractories, depending largely upon the use of steel plates in radial joints between adjacent brick to increase heat transfer through the lining. Refractory lifters expose all portions of the load to radiant or convective heat and raise some portions to higher temperatures by cascading the load down through the path of the hot gases.

In order to account for the additional pressure drop he introduced the dimensionless quantity S, the skin effect factor, so that Eq. 1 becomes: Eq. 2 might have also been obtained as follows. Assume a zone of altered permeability k, exists about the well out to a radius r and beyond that the unaltered, external permeability k. The additional pressure drop required to overcome this skin of reduced permeability may be calculated with sufficient accuracy using the incompressible flow equation; for Browns-combe and Collins1 have shown almost no difference between compressible and incompressible steady-state flow, in the vicinity of the wellbore, and the small volume of fluid in the vicinity of the wellbore makes unsteady-state mechanics unnecessary. The works of the Tula Iron Company are in the Republic of Mexico, State of Jalisco, twenty-eight leagues southwest of Guadalajara, ten leagues northwest of the town of Sayula, through which passes the projected line of the Mexican National Railroad. Its geographical position would be about: latitude, 20' 10' N., longitude, 40 35' w. of Mexico City. The surrounding country is a rolling plateau, 6000 feet above the sea, enjoying the most magnificent climate in the world, the average temperature being about '70'.
