In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

Simple, specific rules for achieving slope stability in open-pit mines are impossible to devise. Each pit has a different mining program and a different set of environmental conditions, and its final slope design must be based on an individual evaluation of the actual site. The overall philosophy of pit stability, however, is tending towards a limit design concept. Since slope angle has a great influence on the economics of most open-pit mines, efforts are being made to reduce the theoretical factor of safety for slope stability to very near 1.0. (Factor of safety is here defined as shear strength/shear stress on the most probable plane of failure.) Actually, where detailed, statistically significant testing has been done and a comprehensive ground control program is being instituted to warn of movement at an early stage, safety factors as low as 1.1 or 1.2 may be justified. The cost of the necessary procedures, however, is high. There are many factors that influence stability, but this article will be confined to three-rock structure, groundwater, and blasting.

The rock and mineral analyst will be called upon to determine both the major and minor constituents in materials as varied as rocks, soil, sediments, concentrates and various liquids. These analyses will have interactions requiring extraction, matrix modification, and background correction. Analytical methodologies include classical gravimetric methods, such as fire assay, emission spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma, and neutron activation. With these capabilities the analyst can be called on to determine three-fourths of the elements in the periodic table. How can the earth scientist pick the method best suited for his particular sample?

ARSENIC and antimony are always grouped together by chemists, since they are both members of group V of the periodic table of elements and exhibit a general similarity in the formation of compounds. Metallurgists generally think of them as less closely related because they do not have similar uses. In metallurgical operations, especially lead and copper smelting, arsenic tends to go off as a vapor phase and collect as fume in the flues, while antimony tends to remain with the bullion. Broadly speaking, the frequency of occurrence, practical utility and the effects on associated metals of arsenic and antimony are such that the metallurgist is inclined to think of arsenic as a troublesome impurity in ores, but of antimony as a valuable constituent that is recovered either as a byproduct or through the metallurgical treatment of antimony ores. Estimating the world production of arsenic as about 40,000 tons annually, probably not more than about 200 tons yearly is produced and used in metallic form, whereas one half of the approximately 40,000 tons of antimony produced annually is metallic. Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 ft and diameters of over 30 in., have become numerous and widespread. 50 such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns. Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-in. diam with 1600-ft depths, 120- in. diam with 570-ft depths, and 72-in. diam with 4800-ft depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of big holes for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of big holes. The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the big hole drilling equipment available, a compilation of the available data on large-diameter holes, to show the experience obtained to date and to show that big hole drilling is feasible and available to the industry.

A thorough knowledge of the peculiarities of this type of orebody is necessary in sampling these limestone replacement deposits. Oxidized ores are often overestimated because of error in determining specific gravity and actual cross-section of the orebody, and sulfide ores are often underestimated because it is difficult to scatter the samples so that they will accurately represent the area under consideration. This paper describes various methods of sampling and cites factors that enter into the estimation of these deposits. IN THE science of evolution of the species, there is a law which, simply stated, avers that the history of the individual repeats the history of the race. Similarly, if unassisted by the experience of others, each successful engineer would perfect and develop his methods and technique from the rough grab sample up to the carefully taken, recorded and studied samples and observations which now determine and decide the expenditure of the large sums required for modern mining. Hence real progress results from the interchange of experience, as in that way the entire experience of the profession can be made available to every engineer. The literature of this subject is already voluminous, but some progress has been made in the gathering of data and in their compilation or presentation.

A LTHOUGH the practical importance of Fe-Cr--iV Mo alloys has long been recognized, constitution studies have been limited to a few alloys within rather narrow ranges of composition. The purpose of the present study was to establish the phase boundaries in the ternary diagram at a temperature of 1200°F (650°C).* The identification of phases and the determination of phase boundaries were based primarily on X-ray diffraction measurements and occasionally on microscopic observation. The methods used for locating the phase boundaries were essentially those described in detail by Andersen and Jette,' and by others.', The compositions of 180 alloys, prepared by powder metallurgy techniques, are shown in Fig. 1. The chemical analysis and mesh size of the powders which were used for the preparation of the alloys are given in Table I. The powders were mixed for 48 hr or longer, then compacted under 80,000 psi in a %-in. diam steel die. Each specimen weighed approximately 5 g. The compacts were sintered for 4 hr at 2500°F (1371°C) in an atmosphere of pure dry hydrogen (dew point near the temperature of liquid nitrogen). An open tray of chromium powder was placed upstream of the compacts to act as a "getter" for the last traces of oxygen or water vapor. In many cases this chromium powder was bright after sintering. Occasionally the upstream side of the powder was slightly greenish, but in all cases the downstream side was metallic. Some of the alloys contracted during sintering and some expanded as much as 20 pct. The latter alloys, which in all cases were brittle, were crushed in a tool steel mortar, repressed, and resintered for 4 hr at 2500°F. After sintering, the alloys were aged for ten days at 1200°F (650°C) in evacuated (105 mm Hg or better) fused silica tubes and were cooled rapidly to room temperature following the aging treatment. The use of the powder metallurgy technique in preparing alloys for structural investigation offers a simple method 'of avoiding contamination or non-homogeniety which could result from a melting operation. It is very often possible to dispense with chemical analysis of the alloys which have been prepared by the powder metallurgy method. In lieu of chemical analysis, it is necessary to determine the weight of the compact before and after sintering. The chemical composition of the alloy may be considered as that of the green compact, within the limits of accuracy determined by the loss of weight during sintering. In phase-diagram studies it is important to achieve homogeniety in structure, whether the alloys are prepared by powder metallurgy or by melting. Homogeniety means complete diffusion during the sintering of the alloys which are prepared by powder metallurgy. It has been found from experience that the best criterion for establishing the completeness of diffusion is the sharpness of the X-ray diffraction patterns. This criterion has been used throughout the present study. The X-ray diffraction data were obtained using powder cameras of either 214.86 or 71.62 mm diam. Copper, cobalt, or chromium Ka. radiation was used, the choice being based on the alloy composition. The powder samples were obtained by filing or crushing, depending on whether the alloy was ductile or brittle. In some cases, the powder was annealed for 4 to 6 hr at 1200°F in vacuum. Book Review MANAGEMENT AND MEN. By Meyer Bloomfield, Boston. The Century Co., New York, 1919, pp. 584, H.X. 5 1/2. $3.50. This hook is an exposition of English efforts to solve the problem of labor unrest in England. The first six chapters are reprinted from articles published in the Satur-day Evening Post, for whom the author went to England to study the problem at first hand. These articles deal with housing, increased production, eliminating the internal friction in the industrial machine and a chapter each devoted to the view-point of employer and employee. These chapters are written in the easily readable magazine style and give a complete general survey of the particular solution being tried. Perhaps their greatest., certainly not their least, worth lies in the fact that they form a vehicle for unusually voluminous appendices containing in full the famous Whitley Reports which are the basis of the new movement, together with various reports, which, except for this publication, would be largely inaccessible to those inter-ested in this country. The Whitley scheme considers each industry a unit and proposes to establish therein a Joint Standing Industrial Council composed of representatives of employers and employees to consider appropriate matters affecting the industry at large. There is to be a District Council for each industry which will, as its name implies, deal with the clatters pertaining to that interest in. the particular district. The third and last body in this scheme of Industrial Parliament is the Works Committee, which is com-posed of representatives of the management and of the workers employed in particu-lar plants or mines to act in close cooperation With the district quid national machinery. The Whitley or similar schemes have been tried in many communities in England and the book contains interesting comments on the result obtained, it being notable that most of the objections conic from plants which have not tried the scheme. An industry-wide demand for bigger and more efficient trucks, with their supposed economies of scale, is well established. Some trucks have been, and often are brought "off the shelf," with the manufacturer offering only certain minor options, much as in the private automobile industry. The market is well established; there is keen competition; in recent years there have been few significant changes, and few are expected. With large trucks (100-ton-capacity and over), however, the situation is different. Here, with an individual truck costing several hundred thousand dollars, there is an ever in- creasing trend to engineer a truck for a specific application. The body will be designed and sized for the material that the truck will carry; the engine and transmission will be geared to the haul profile, and tires will be designed to suit road conditions and work requirements. Early Truck Development Haulage trucks designed expressly for open-pit mine service were introduced during the 1930's. The first models to arrive on the scene hauled about 15 tons, and easily outperformed the modified highway trucks that had been used for mine haulage up to that time.

WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

Although enormous tonnages of sulfide lead and lead-silver ores are treated by flotation, the products of flotation mills treating oxidized ores of lead and silver are almost negligible. However, each year there is a slight tonnage increase, and it is possible, should a sizeable oxidized lead ore tonnage be developed, the field will become an important one. In 1918, the Shattuck-Arizona Copper Co. erected a plant at Warren, Ariz., for the treatment of oxidized gold-silver-lead ores. Glenn L. Allen worked out the metallurgy for this plant, employing tabling, followed by flotation concentration. The Shattuck-Denn Mining Co., successors to the Shattuck-Arizona Co., now employs straight flotation in the same mill, treating about 200 tons daily. In 1922, the San Diego mill of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in the Parral district, Chihuahua, Mexico, started operating a 600-ton mill on a mixed sulfide-oxide gold-silver-lead ore. Tables and flotation are used here, and about 200 tons of oxidized slime treated by flotation. In 1923, the Eureka Holly Mining Co. started operating a 90-ton mill at Eureka, Nev., using tables and flotation, on an oxidized lead-silver ore. In 1924, the American Smelting & Refining Co, started a 250-ton mill in northern Peru, to treat a high-grade oxidized gold-silver ore with very low lead values. In 1924, the Grand Central Mining Co. started a 200-ton flotation mill on old oxidized gold-silver-lead tailings at Fairbank, Ariz. In 1926, the Compania Internacional Minera, a subsidiary of the Union Corporation of London, started a 250-ton flotation mill on oxidized lead-silver ores, and during April of this year, the Phelps-Dodge Corpn. will probably start a 250-ton mill at Warren, Ariz., on oxidized lead-silver ores, similar to those being treated in the Shattuck-Denn mill. Methods All of these mills use sodium sulfide for filming the oxide minerals, with the possible exception of the North Peru mill, and all use oily reagents. The total tonnage of strictly oxidized lead-silver ores concentrated by flotation is probably less than 2500 tons daily. The following figures give the various types of ores being treated:

As a result of the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), now the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) initiated the draft of new federal regulations to deal with the mine waste impoundment and refuse pile problems. Public hearings were held and finally promulgated in October, 1976. As stated in 30 Code of Federal Regulations 77.214-216, the complete engineering design plan which is mandated by the regulations has to be approved by a coal mine health and safety district manager. During the past 18 months MSHA has gained considerable experience through the submission, review, and approval process. This report indicates the procedures, general design criteria and inspection requirements for submission of engineering plans to be approved. In particular, problem areas encountered most frequently by both operators and MSHA will be discussed. Only through diligent efforts by the operators, consultants and government, can we hope to accomplish the common goal to improve the safety of operations.

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of green- sand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of green- sand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace- element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. It was reported earlier that francolite and dolomite from south Florida deposits cannot be selectively floated using conventional conditioning with sodium oleate as the collector. However, dolomite could be separated from francolite if the minerals were first conditioned at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at a lower pH. An optimum separation was achieved after reconditioning at a pH below 4.5. Reconditioning pH and collector concentration were determined to exert a major influence on the selectivity. Flotation, adsorption, and transmission infrared spectroscopic results are presented to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the observed selectivity.

A summary of- several recent investigations in to the properties of the metal-oxide-silicon system is presented. A major portion of these studies makes use of the MOS capacitance-z)oltage method of' analysis. The particular areas of investigation which are reported include: 1) a general survey of the electvical properties of thermally oxidized silicon surjbccs; 2) a study of ion migration through silicon dioxide films ; 3) measurements of electron and hole mobilities in surface inversion layers; 4) a study of impurity redistribution due to thermal o.ridatiotz; and 5) measurements of the rates of oxidation oj-heavily doper7. silicon. THE importance of the metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) system in the semiconductor industry is well-known. In addition to its importance in the "planar" device technology,' the MOS structure is now also used in the fabrication of active solid-state devices. Consequently, extensive efforts have been made recently to obtain a better understanding of the characteristics of this system. A summary of some studies of the MOS system conducted in our laboratories during the past year is presented. For the most part these studies used silicon as the semiconductor, along with silicon dioxide and aluminum as the other two components of the system. Since the MOS capacitance-voltage method of analysis was used extensively in these studies, we will first briefly describe its nature and consider some of the possible causes of deviation of experimental observations from the simple theory. We will then outline the various related areas of investigation carried out in our laboratories and will briefly indicate some of the results. It should be noted that the purpose of this paper is merely to provide a brief summary of MOS studies. More detailed discussions of the various areas of investigation are given in the references cited. PRINCIPLES OF THE MOS C-V METHOD OF ANALYSIS' A sketch of the MOS structure is shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1. In this case the insulating film is Si02 and the semiconductor p-type silicon. If a large negative bias is applied to the metal field plate, holes are attracted to the silicon surface. The silicon then behaves much like a metal and the capacitance measured is that of the oxide layer alone, Co. If a small positive bias is applied to the aluminum, holes are repelled and a region depleted of majority carriers is formed at the silicon surface. This depletion I-egion adds to the width of the dielectric and the measured capacitance begins to drop. With increasing positive bias, the width of the electrical depletion region increases. At some large positive bias an inzevsion regiotr is formed at the surface and additional charges induced in the silicon appear in the form of electrons in this narrow inversion region. Thus the depletion-region width approaches a maximum value and, consequently, the capacitance reaches a minimum value and then either levels off or rises again depending on the measurement frequency and the rate of equilibration of the minority carriers in the inversion layer.3 Band diagrams, along with the corresponding charge distributions, are shown in Fig. 1 for the above bias conditions. If minority carriers cannot accumulate at the surface to form an inversion region, the depletion-region width continues to increase with increased positive bias and the capacitance drops toward zero as in a reverse biased p-n junction. The effect of a work-function difference $hs between the metal and the silicon, and of surface charges per unit area Qss located at the oxide-silicon interface, is simply to attract charges in the silicon much like the applied bias. It can be shown that this results in a parallel shift of the capacitance-voltage characteristic along the voltage axis by an amount corresponding to AV = -$bIs + Qss/Co. Theoretical curves have been calculated4 giving the capacitance of the MOS structure C normalized to the oxide capacitance Co vs the quantity VG here VG is the voltage applied to the metal field plate. In Fig. 2 such calculations are shown as points for a particular oxide thickness and bulk impurity concentration for a p-type semiconductor. (For an n-type semiconductor the curves would be mirror images of these.) All three cases, i.e., low frequency. high frequency, and depletion, are indicated. Also shown in the figure are recorder tracings of the characteristics of actual devices. These characteristics have been shifted along the voltage axis to compensate the effect of surface charges and work-function difference.
