A theoretical and experimental laboratory study has shown that the rate of breaking of oversized particles in a ball mill is proportional to 1) the concentration of such particles, and 2) the area of the balls, provided that the balls are larger than a certain size relative to the particles. If all undersized material were removed as formed, the rate of breaking would be almost independent of the quantity in the mill. Rate equations are given which are similar to those for zero, first, and second order reactions. Deviations of small balls from the equation for a second order phenomena are quantified by a factor called "nipping efficiency." Some data are correlated by a dimension-less equation, which is used to estimate nipping efficiencies from data not in the correlation. The investigation described here was undertaken after a literature survey revealed that little was known concerning the mechanism of breaking of particles within a ball mill and the effect of this mechanism upon grinding rates. One paper, by Roberts1 , offered a theory concerning the mechanism of breaking, and a rate equation for the breaking of particles larger than some size to particles smaller than that size. That paper provided the starting point for a theoretical and experimental investigation of grinding under carefully controlled conditions. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS In his paper on the probability theory of ball mill grinding, Roberts theorized that "... a given expenditure of power leads either to a certain number of point to point blows per bp-hr or to a certain distance of line contact per hp-hr ..." He assumed that the balls touch each other during each blow or during moving contact. Then he said that a volume of pulp, dependent upon the size being considered, would be covered per minute within which all oversized particles would be crushed to particles smaller than that size. Naturally, the higher the concentration of oversized particles in the pulp, the higher the rate of which they would be broken. From this reasoning Roberts obtained the differential equation -dC/dt = k hp/ton C (1) where k is a constant for any size of particle, density of particle, and moisture content of pulp. C is the percentage of oversize in the material to be ground, t is the time, and hp/ton is the power input per ton of material in the mill. He then integrated the equation to log Co/Ct = k/2.3 hp/ton t , where Co and Ct are the percentage of oversize at time zero and t respectively. By always using the same quantity of material in a mill and assuming that it required constant power to run the mill, he was able to combine the horsepower per ton factor with the other constants to give an equation for a first order rate.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.

The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

A laboratory-scale investigation was made of the basic problems involved in developing a ceramic heat exchanger to operate at high temperatures for using nuclear heat from gas-cooled process-heat reactors. Technical data were obtained on transferring heat by forced-convection from helium to air in a single-tube vitreous-alumina heat exchanger. Coolant air was passed through the annulus parallel with, and either concurrently or counter to, the flow of helium inside the tube. The data obtained pertain to removing heat from the helium. Average inside film coefficients were determined at mean surface temperatures of 200° to 1,570° F., inlet-gas temperatures of 1,450° to 2,665° F., and Reynolds numbers up to 560. The gas-to-surface temperature ratios were varied from 1.05 to 7.6. The tabulated results are shown in the appendix at the end of this report. The film coefficients of heat transfer were correlated by taking into account the physical properties of the helium at the average fluid temperature. With experimental conditions pointing to a laminar flow, the Nusselt number was found to decrease as the ratio of gas-to-wall temperature was increased to a value of 3. However, within the range tested, gas-to-wall temperature ratios above 3 did not affect the Nusselt number, regardless of the value of the Graetz number. Thus, beyond this point any increase in this ratio ceased to influence the heat-transfer relationship.

The performance of an adiabatic calorimeter for measuring heats of oxidation of coal is assessed and suggestions made for its improvement and calibration. The use of magnetic analysers for measuring small oxygen deficiencies in air is described and three different methods of measuring the output for such a meter are characterised. The occurrence of spontaneous heating in an 800 tonne heap of Wyoming coal is briefly described. The major part of the report deals with the oxidation of Pittsburgh seam and Wyoming subbituminous coal and describes an experiment in which 1 tonne of Wyoming coal is stored in a 5 metre long insulated container whilst air was passed through. Temperature rises, rates of oxygen absorption and gas compositions of the air stream were measured. The report relates the results of these-experiments to a theory of spontaneous heating developed by Stott and Quan which stresses the importance of the moisture content of the coal and the relationship between the heat necessary to evaporate this water to the heat available from coal oxidation. The work was carried out over a five month period and the emphasis is on demonstrating the effects of moisture transfer and confirming the theory of Stott and Quan.

The industrial coal processing trend toward greater fines production, due to mining techniques and customer requirements for reduced ash and sulphur content in the fine coal product, is the basis for ongoing efforts to improve the performance of the flotation machine. WCO has successfully adapted the principles of the beds Column to a full size machine prototype. Recent plant evaluation tests confirmed the initial promise of this concept by achieving a considerably lower ash product while maintaining the combustible recovery level of conventional flotation machinery. The paper will include a review of the fundamental principles of the beds Column concept, together with a summary of the WEMCO R&D Program from concept evaluation and laboratory testing, through pilot, to full size machine tests. The performance of the WEMCO/Leeds flotation column will be compared to conventional flotation concepts using a flotation "kinetics" approach, which quantifies the floatable and non-floatable specie recovery performance using the Klimpel model as the basis for analysis. The variety of distinct features unique to this concept include a series of barrier rods which are used to advantage, often together with countercurrent reflux water flow, to achieve a significant improvement in product grade. The hydrodynamics associated with the mechanics of "gangue stripping" from the rising "air bubble-floatable specie" matrix will be briefly reviewed.

The mining sequence at Noranda’s Bell- Allard mine calls for two mining fronts retreating toward a central pillar known as the Retreat Zone between pyramids A and C. It is clear from numerical modelling and rock mass characterization that the induced stress level in the pillar will exceed the rock mass capacity. A mining plan was developed including the redimensioning of stopes in the Retreat Zone, additional ground support and instrumentation in order to ensure the safety of the workforce and to maximize ore recovery while minimizing production delays. The mining strategy consists in allowing the rock mass to fracture and fail progressively while maintaining control of the existing openings with the appropriate support. A systematic analysis of rockbursting and caving hazards was conducted for all accesses and stopes in order to plan ground support and instrumentation needs.

Automation in underground mining enhances safety and leads to economic efficiency. In the past many efforts have been made on the automation of longwall shearer operation. With respect to the ultimate goal of automation, ie self controlled operation, coal bed boundary detection is one of the key problems. For longwall human labor is necessary in order to detect the exact position of the coal seam to be excavated. The authors present a sensor concept based on infrared technology and pattern recognition which will solve this problem. The very harsh underground conditions set high demands on the implemented sensors. The combination of infrared sensors and powerful processing algorithms is part of the innovative concept for automation of the new Eickhoff Bergbautechnik GmbH SL 750 shearer loader. The multi-sensor automation system EiControlPlus which is designed for the complete detection of the machine environment fills in the gap in the coal-excavation automation by building a recognition system that turns the shearer loader into an 'intelligent machine' which is capable of detecting the correct position of the seam to be excavated and thus enables human-free coal mining.

"Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the installation and use of such a device on a SAG mill at the Holt-McDermott Mine. Comparison to measured static volumetric load and bearing pressure and inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed. INTRODUCTIONWhile the measurement of load is very important in all kinds of grinding applications, the biggest benefits are expected from AG and SAG milling. This is what motivated Holt-McDermott to take a closer look at this problem, with a view to optimizing SAG mill performance.In many cases, the SAG mill control problem can be stated as maximizing throughput while avoiding a volumetric overload, with the other constraints (e.g. power, grind size, upstream/downstream equipment constraints, etc.) playing a less important role. This is certainly true at Holt-McDermott where the SAG mill is the production bottleneck about 90% of the time, and anything that can be done to increase SAG mill throughput will have a significant impact on operating profit.Although the goal of maximizing throughput while avoiding volumetric overload is simple to state, it has proven to be much more difficult to achieve. The mineral processing industry has expended a great deal of time and effort to devise control strategies in the pursuit of this objective. While much progress has been made, there is still room for considerable improvement. Across the industry it is probably fair to say that overloads occur relatively infrequently, but the real losses accrue as a result of the tendency to run rather conservatively."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The island of Java lies within the Sunda-Banda magmatic arc, which is characterised by multiple phases of volcanic activity and extensive compressional deformation. Along this zone, significant gold and copper mineralisation occurs, including some of the world’s largest deposits. In West Java, epithermal gold mineralisation is typically located in a series of extensional and strike-slip faults that cut Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks. These are all low-sulfidation, epithermal, vein-stockwork-style deposits developed in Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, which have been intruded by shallow-level plutons.This paper discusses an example of epithermal mineralisation at Mt Subang, West Java. Gold mineralisation was originally identified from stream sediment, panned concentrate and rock geochemistry sampling in the early 1990s. Geophysical surveys (magnetics and induced polarisation resistivity/chargeability), trenching, pitting and diamond hole drilling has subsequently revealed silicified-quartz vein epithermal gold mineralisation hosted within fault structures. It is clear that these structures acted as hydrothermal fluid pathways leading to the development of mineralised offshoots along north–south extensional and en-echelon arrays of north-east–south-west and transtensional faults. A number of vertical offshoots also occur in flexures and fault jogs. Post-mineral faulting has subsequently dissected and offset a number of the offshoots. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of structure and fault kinematics and displacement magnitudes is required in order to understand the geometry and continuity of mineralisation across major structures and maximise the resource potential. Compostos orgânicos adicionados em soluções eletrolíticas podem influenciar na eficiência do eletrodepósito, no aspecto visual do material, nas fases formadas, na topografia e na dureza do revestimento. Para analisar esses parâmetros, um aço baixo carbono foi revestido com ligas Zn-Ni, a partir de três banhos distintos contendo os seguintes compostos orgânicos, além de outros reagentes: sacarina, trietilamina e ácido p-toluenossulfônico, a fim de compará-los entre si e com o banho sem composto orgânico. Para isso, utilizou-se microscópio eletrônico de varredura, espectroscopia de dispersão de raios-x e microscópio óptico confocal para análise da superfície, além de ultra-microdurômetro para determinação da dureza dinâmica do revestimento. Os resultados mostraram que os compostos orgânicos alteraram as características do depósito. Conclui-se que ocorreram alterações na eficiência catódica, na porcentagem dos elementos de Zn e Ni no revestimento, nas características de rugosidade, porosidade e dureza.

"This paper presents the use of queuing theory in truck fleet sizing in open pit mining operations. In the first part, a methodology is developed by which an optimal ratio between the size of shovels and trucks may be determined. The second part gives the fundamentals of the queuing theory and its application in analyzing shovel and trucks. The stochastic character of involved times (loading, truck cycle, etc.) is taken into consideration. Using the above theory, the optimal truck fleet size in actual conditions may be estimated. Minimal operating cost of the working system (shovelstrucks) represents the basic requirement of the analyzed process. The methodology was validated on Caterpillar front-shovel – truck combinations. Le coût de transport peut parfois atteindre 50 % du coût d’exploitation et 25 % du coût total (Collins, 1996; Kennedy, 1990). Il est critique pour une opération minière de le minimiser. Les premières applications informatiques dans l’industrie minière ont été développées pour la détermination du temps de cycle des camions.Au fil des ans, la capacité des camions a augmenté et, aujourd’hui, les plus gros manufacturiers de camions (Caterpillar, Orenstein & Koppel, Euclid, Terex, Unit Rig, Komatsu, Liebherr, Belaz) fabriquent des camions ayant une capacité de 200 t et plus dont quelques-uns d’une capacité supérieure à 320 t. Pour les plus gros camions, le coût d’opération peut même dépasser 240 $US/heure dans des conditions modérées (Caterpillar, 1999). Impact of small projectiles with velocities between 0.9 and 7.3 km per sec on basalt produce craters chiefly by the ejection of fragments. Weight-size distributions of the ejecta are linear for part of the size range of the fragments. Cumulative weight-size distributions of the ejecta from different craters vary because of erratic formation of large fragments and a large percentage of ejecta below 0.1 mm. In the range of velocities studied, the crater depth is approximately proportional to the 0.75 power of velocity of the projectile. This relationship may represent a transition regime between the fluid impact regime and the undeformed projectile impact regime. The volumes per unit of projectile energy of the craters produced are comparable to those reported for lower speed projectile impact and drill bits. An experimental investigation of projectile impact on rock is being conducted jointly by the Ames Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey. Projectiles are launched with light-gas guns at the Ballistics Range of the Ames Research Center. The craters and ejecta produced in these experiments are being studied by the U.S. Geological Survey. Steel, aluminum and polyethylene projectiles weighing from 0.25 to 0.015 g were accelerated to velocities of 0.88 km per sec (2,900 fps) to 7.3 km per sec (24,000 fps) with a light-gas gun, using hydrogen as the propellant medium. Projectiles impacted the targets normal to plane rock surfaces in an atmosphere of air with a nominal pressure of 25 to 50 mm of mercury. The metal projectiles were mounted in supporting four-piece nylon sabots, which guided the projectiles down the launching tube. After launch, aerodynamic drag acted to separate the sabots from the projectiles. Impact velocities were determined with time measurements and spark photographs of the projectiles in flight. Ejecta were collected in lucite and aluminum containers placed around the target block. A small hole in the containers permitted projectile entry. Impact of projectiles of the size employed produced craters in the rock targets chiefly by ejection of fragments. The craters are small, roughly conical depressions with crushed and intensely fractured rock at the bottoms of the depressions. The ejecta are composed of pieces of the projectile and rock fragments ranging in size from a few tenths of a micron or less to several centimeters in maximum dimension. In this paper, the structural features of the craters, the weight-size distributions of the recovered ejecta, and crater depth and crater volume relationships are described. The high transverse tensile stresses that develop in precast concrete piles during driving have been investigated experimentally from pile load tests and theoretically using the finite element method (FEM). These tensile stresses can be high enough to cause longitudinal splitting of the piles just below the pile cap. Test data and FEM indicated that the maximum transverse tensile stress will increase with increasing thickness of the cover. The maximum tensile stress can be high especially if the pile is eccentrically loaded. The results from the experimental investigation and from FEM are described in the paper as well as a simplified method based on the stress distribution in a concrete cylinder at an indirect tension test.

"The aim of our work is to investigate a low energy and clean route for the recovery of copper and cobalt from complex sulphide mineral concentrates. The mineral concentrates were roasted in air, in the presence of CaO (MS + CaO + 202 =MO+ CaS04) at temperatures below 973K. The roasted products containing CuO, CoO and Fe203 were carbothermically reduced at 1073K within an hour to preferentially reduce copper and cobalt. The kinetics of reactions were studied using the thermogravimetric technique and by characterisation ofreaction products using the XRDSEM-EDX techniques. The effects of MS:CaO ratio, roasting temperatures and physical nature of the mineral concentrates were analysed. The method for capturing S02 by forming CaS04 was analysed for reuse in the process. The energy balance for the above process is compared with that of conventional continuous smelting/converting process.1.0 IntroductionCopper sulphide mineral concentrates from Zambia contains substantial amouot of cobalt. The cobalt metal content in the concentrates ranges between 0.7 and 2 % weight, which corresponds to 3 and 9 % weight copper, based on the spot price of copper ($7 386/tone) and cobalt ($31 000/tone). Although the traditional approach using a combination of roasting-leaching-electrowining steps can be applied to recover copper and cobalt from sulphide mineral concentrates [1-4], there are two major draw backs of the traditional process: (i) the S02 emitted during roasting is too lean for economical conversion for sulphuric acid manufacture, which causes serious environmental pollution. (ii) silver and gold which are normally present in the sulphide concentrates are lost out [5] because they are not leachable by H2S04 or HCl which are the common leachants. The above two problems have been overcome by adopting flash smelting in which a rich S02 gas above 20% is produced [1, 5] and successfully converted into sulphuric acid. The precious metals tend to partition to blister copper and recovered during refming. However, nearly all cobalt is lost into the slag phase uoder oxidising condition which prevails during flash smelting. It is important to note that the cobalt content in the slag can be up to 2.6 % weight [6]. The recovery of cobalt from the slag is a process which requires huge amouot of energy since the slag is smelted above 1873K [6]. With a view of minimising the amouot of energy and S02 emission during metal recovery, our investigation involves roasting the sulphide concentrates in the presence of lime and reducing the roasted samples with carbon."

The center of Berlin is currently a huge jobsite, where international architects, designers, consultants, construction and ground engineers as well as investors take on the challenge of the biggest and probably most complicated projects in terms of soil conditions in Europe. The Berlin sand is generally suitable for foundation measures, but can be very tricky in deep excavation pits below the high ground water level. The reason for this is its uniform grading, medium dense stratification and lack of cohesion. The requirements for these deep pits are: - measurements in the range of up to 120 000 m2 per pit - depths up to 19 m below ground water level - lack of dense horizontal geological layers - no permission for lowering ground water levels - toughest ever European competition in construction. Sheet pile walls, sheet piles set into cut - off walls, secant pile walls, diaphragm walls, all with tie backs under high water pressure, are used as retaining sytems. The pits are closed at the bottom against water either by under water concrete, deep lying grouted cut - offs or high lying jet - grouted cut - off slabs. The huge dimensions of these excavation pits are a new challenge for ground engineers, and new technology had to solve the upcoming problems and resulted in new experience.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.
